[Sugriva feels happy about his friendship with Rama --- solicits Vali's death --- relates to Rama about Vali's hostile attitude and his enmity with him.]

parituṣṭastu sugrīvastēna vākyēna vānaraḥ.

lakṣmaṇasyāgratō rāmamidaṅ vacanamabravīt4.8.1৷৷


vānaraḥ monkey, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, tēna vākyēna by the words, parituṣṭaḥ very pleased, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, agrataḥ in front, idaṅ vacanam these words, abravīt he spoke.

Sugriva, the monkey was very pleased with Rama's words and said to him in front of Lakshmana:
sarvathā.hamanugrāhyō dēvatānāṅ na saṅśayaḥ.

upapanna guṇōpētassakhā yasya bhavānmama4.8.2৷৷


upapannaḥ come, guṇōpētaḥ endowed with all virtues, bhavān yourself, yasya mama you to me, sakhā friend, aham I am, sarvathā in all respects, dēvatānām of gods, anugrāhyaḥ worthy of favour, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no.

'Since one like you endowed with all virtues has become my friend I am (now) worthy of grace of the gods in all respects. There is no doubt.
śakyaṅ khalu bhavēdrāma! sahāyēna tvayā.nagha!.

surarājyamapi prāptuṅ svarājyaṅ kiṅ panaḥ prabhō 4.8.3৷৷


anagha sinless, prabhō O Lord!, rāma Rama, tvayā by you, sahāyēna with help, surarājyamapi even the kingdom of the gods, prāptum to attain, śakyam possible, svarājyam my own kingdom, kiṅ punaḥ what to speak

'O Rama, my sinless Lord, it is possible to attain even the kingdom of the gods with your help, what to speak of my own kingdom?
sō.haṅ sabhājyō bandhūnāṅ suhṛdāṅ caiva rāghava.

yasyāgnisākṣikaṅ mitraṅ labdhaṅ rāghavavaṅśajam4.8.4৷৷


rāghava Rama!, yasya whose, rāghavavaṅśajam born in Raghava dynasty, mitram friend, agnisākṣikam fire as witness, labdham got, saḥ aham that I, bandhūnām among relatives, suhṛdāṅ caiva also among friends, sabhājyaḥ became equally honourable.

'O Rama, since you, born in Raghava dynasty, have become my friend with fire as witness, I have become equally honourable among my relatives and friends.
ahamapyanurūpastē vayasyō jñāsyasē śanaiḥ.

na tu vaktuṅ samarthō.haṅ svayamātmagatānguṇān4.8.5৷৷


ahamapi I am also, tē to you, anurūpaḥ worthy, vayasyaḥ friend, śanaiḥ slowly, jñāsyasē you will know, aham I am, imān those, ātmaguṇān my own qualities, svayam myself, vaktum to speak of, samarthaḥ proper, na not

'You will come to know slowly that I am also a friend worthy of you.It is not proper for me to speak of my qualities( flatter myself).
mahātmanāṅ tu bhūyiṣṭhaṅ tvadvidhānāṅ kṛtātmanām.

niścalā bhavati prītirdhairyamātmavatāmiva4.8.6৷৷


ātmavatām well-composed, kṛtātmanām self-controlled, tvadvidhānām of men like you, mahātmanām of the exalted souls, prītiḥ affection, bhūyiṣṭham exceedingly, niścalā stable, bhavati will be, dhairyam patience.

'The affection of exalted souls is exceedingly stable like the patience of self-controlled and well-composed men like you.
rajataṅ vā suvarṇaṅ vā vastrāṇyābharaṇāni ca.

avibhaktāni sādhūnāmavagacchanti sādhavaḥ4.8.7৷৷


sādhūnām good friends, rajataṅ vā silver or, suvarṇaṅ vā gold, vastrāṇi clothes, ābharaṇāni ca and ornaments, avibhaktāni not divisible, sādhavaḥ men who go in one's way, avagacchanti will consider.

'Good friends consider(valuables such as) silver or gold, clothes or ornaments of worldly wealth indivisible.
āḍhyō vāpi daridrō vā duḥkhitassukhitō.pi vā.

nirdōṣō vā sadōṣō vā vayasyaḥ paramā gatiḥ4.8.8৷৷


āḍhyō vāpi whether a rich man, daridrō vā or poor, duḥkhitaḥ or sad one, sukhitō.pi vā or a happy man, nirdōṣō flawless one, sadōṣaḥ guilty, vayasyaḥ a friend, paramā ultimate, gatiḥ refuge.

'Whether rich or poor, afflicted or happy, flawless or guilty, a friend is the ultimate refuge to a friend.
dhanatyāgassukhatyāgō dēhatyāgō.pi vā punaḥ.

vayasyārthē pravartantē snēhaṅ dṛṣṭavā tathāvidham4.8.9৷৷


snēham friendship, tathāvidham that kind, dṛṣṭvā after finding, vayasyārthē for the sake of a friend, dhanatyāgaḥ to sacrifice wealth, sukhatyāgaḥ to sacrifice happiness, dēhatyāgō.pi vā or sacrifice even life, pravartantē undertake

'One will not hesitate to sacrifice wealth or happiness or even life for the sake of a friend like you.'
tattathētyabravīdrāmassugrīvaṅ priyavādinam.

lakṣmaṇasyāgratō lakṣmyā vāsavasyēva dhīmataḥ4.8.10৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, vāsavasya iva like Indra, dhīmataḥ wise, lakṣmyā by signs, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, agrataḥ in the presence of, priyavādinam pleasant speaker, sugrīvam Sugriva, tat that, tathā it is true, iti thus, abravīt he spoke.

As wise Lakshmana, brilliant like Indra stood witness, Rama said, 'it is true as you say' to Sugriva who spoke pleasing words.
tatō rāmaṅ sthitaṅ dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇaṅ ca mahābalam.

sugrīvassarvataścakṣurvanē lōlamapātayat4.8.11৷৷


tataḥ then, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, sthitam standing, rāmam Rama, mahābalam strong, lakṣmaṇaṅ ca Lakshmana also, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, lōlam moving unsteadily, cakṣuḥ his eyes, vanē in the forest, sarvataḥ all sides, apātayat cast.

With mighty Rama and Lakshmana standing by, Sugriva cast his eyes eagerly all round the forest.
sa dadarśa tatassālamavidūrē harīśvaraḥ.

supuṣpamīṣatpatrāḍhyaṅ bhramarairupaśōbhitam4.8.12৷৷


tataḥ then, saḥ harīśvaraḥ chief of monkeys, avidūrē not very far, supuṣpam having flowers, īṣatpatrāḍhyam with a few leaves, bhramaraiḥ by bees, upaśōbhitam looking graceful, sālam sala tree, dadarśa saw.

Then the chief of monkeys saw a sala tree looking lovely with tender leaves and flowers graced by bees.
tasyaikāṅ parṇabahulāṅ bhaṅktvā śākhāṅ supuṣpitām.

sālasyāstīrya sugrīvō niṣasāda sarāghavaḥ4.8.13৷৷


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, tasya its, parṇabahulām with plenty of leaves, suśōbhitām beautifully blossomed, ēkāṅ śākhām one branch, bhaṅktvā broke, rāmasya for Rama, āstīrya spread, sa rāghavaḥ with Rama, niṣasāda sat.

Sugriva cut a branch of the beautifully blossomed sala tree with plenty of leaves, spread it (on the ground) and squatted along with Rama.
tāvāsīnau tatō dṛṣṭvā hanūmānapi lakṣmaṇam.

sālaśākhāṅ samutpāṭya vinītamupavēśayat4.8.14৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, hanūmānapi Hanuman also, āsīnau seated, tau both Rama and Sugriva, dṛṣṭvā seeing, sālaśākhām a branch of sala tree, samutpāṭya broke, vinītam obedient, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, upavēśayat made him sit.

Thereafter Hanuman also broke a branch of the sala tree and seated Lakshmana on it.
sukhōpaviṣṭaṅ rāmaṅ tu prasannamudadhiṅ yathā.

phalapuṣpasamākīrṇē tasmin girivarōttamē4.8.15৷৷

tataḥ prahṛṣṭassugrīvaślakṣṇaṅ madhurayā girā.

uvāca praṇayādrāmaṅ harṣavyākulitākṣaram4.8.16৷৷


tataḥ then, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, phalapuṣpamākīrṇē in a place filled with flowers and fruits, tasmin in that, girivarōttamē on the best of mountains, sukhōpaviṣṭam seated comfortably, prasannam peaceful, udadhiṅ yathā like an ocean, rāmam Rama, ślakṣṇam softly, madhurayā sweetly, girā words, harṣavyākulitākṣaram mixing up words due to extreme joy and excitement, praṇayāt out of love, uvāca said.

Now Rama, seated comfortably on the best of mountains overgrown with trees full of flowers and fruits, appeared tranguil like an ocean. Extremely delighted and excited, Sugriva spoke to Rama words that got mixed up with softness and sweetness out of love:
ahaṅ vinikṛtō bhrātrā carāmyēṣa bhayārditaḥ.

ṛṣyamūkaṅ girivaraṅ hṛtabhāryassuduḥkhitaḥ4.8.17৷৷


bhrātrā brother, vinikṛtaḥ offended, ēṣaḥ here I am, aham I, bhayārditaḥ frightened, hṛtabhāryaḥ wife stolen, suduḥkhitaḥ very sad, girivaram great mountain, ṛśyamūkam Rishyamuka, carāmi I am roaming .

'I am sadly roaming here in the great Rishyamuka mountain, my wife stolen, offended by my brother and frightened.
sō.haṅ trastō bhayē magnō vasāmyudbhrāntacētanaḥ.

vālinā nikṛtō bhrātrā kṛtavairaśca rāghava4.8.18৷৷


rāghava Rama, bhrātrā brother, vālinā by Vali, nikṛtaḥ deceived, kṛtavairaśca developed enmity, saḥ aham that I am, trastaḥ terrified, sambhrāntacētanaḥ utterly confused, vanē in the forest, bhayē with fear, magnaḥ stricken.

'O Rama! my brother is my enemy. Deceived and threatened by him, I live in the forest stricken with fear and utterly confused.
vālinō mē bhayārtasya sarvalōkābhayaṅkara.

mamāpi tvamanāthasya prasādaṅ kartumarhasi4.8.19৷৷


sarvalōkābhayaṅkara! O warrior who can threaten people of all worlds!, mē to me, vālinaḥ from Vali, bhayārtasya of one scared and helpless, anāthasya of an orphan, mamāpi for me, tvam you, prasādam grace, kartum to do, arhasi ought to.

'O great warrior who can frighten all the worlds! scared of Vali, I feel helpless like an orphan to whom you ought to extend your grace.'
ēvamuktastu tējasvī dharmajñō dharmavatsalaḥ.

pratyuvāca sa kākutsthassugrīvaṅ prahasanniva4.8.20৷৷


ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having spoken, tējasvī glorious, dharmajñaḥ knower of duty , dharmavatsalaḥ a lover of dharma, saḥ kākutsthaḥ that Kakustha, prahasanniva gentle smile on his face, sugrīvam to Sugriva, pratyuvāca replied

Thus spoken to, the glorious Rama, lover of righteousness who knew his duty, replied to Sugriva with a smile on his face:
upakāraphalaṅ mitramapakārō.rilakṣaṇam.

adyaiva taṅ haniṣyāmi tava bhāryāpahāriṇam4.8.21৷৷


mitramjña a friend, upakāraphalam carries the fruit of help, apakāraḥ harm, arilakṣaṇam an enemy's characteristic feature, tava your, bhāryāpahāriṇam wrested your wife, tam him, adyaiva this very day, vadhiṣyāmi I will kill.

'While a friend is known for his help, an enemy is known for his offensiveness. I will this very day kill the one who wrested your wife.
imē hi mē mahāvēgā patriṇastigmatējasaḥ.

kārtikēyavanōdbhūtāśśarā hēmavibhūṣitāḥ4.8.22৷৷

kaṅkapatraparicchannā mahēndrāśanisannibhāḥ.

suparvāṇassutīkṣṇāgrāssarōṣā bhujagā iva4.8.23৷৷


mahāvēgāḥ of high speed, mē my, patriṇaḥ winged ones, imē these , śarāḥarrows, tigmatējasaḥ glowing like fierce fire, kārtikēyavanōdbhatāḥ born out of Kartikeya's bed of reeds, hēmavibhūṣitāḥ decked with gold, kaṅkapatraparicchannāḥ covered with kanka feathers, mahēndrāśanisannibhāḥ comparable to great Indra's thunderbolt, suparvāṇaḥ those with smooth joints, sutīkṣṇāgrāḥ with very sharp and pointed tips, sarōṣāḥ angry, bhujagāḥ serpents, iva like.

'Here are my high-speed, winged arrows glowing like fierce fire, born out of Kartikeya's bed of reeds.They are smooth and well-jointed, decked with gold, comparable in strength to great Indra's thunderbolt, very sharp with pointed tips looking like angry serpents.
bhrātṛsaṅjñamamitraṅ tē vālinaṅ kṛtakilbiṣam.

śarairvinihataṅ paśya vikīrṇamiva parvatam4.8.24৷৷


tē your, vālinam at Vali, kṛtakilbiṣam doer of wrong deeds, vālisaṅjñam calls Vali's brother, amitram enemy, śaraiḥ by arrows, vinihatam being killed, vikīrṇam shattered, parvatam iva crushed like a mountain, paśya you may see.

'Vali who calls himself your brother is your enemy and a doer of wrong deeds. You will see him crushed, like a mountain shattered, by my arrows.'
rāghavasya vacaśśrutvā sugrīvō vāhinīpatiḥ.

praharṣamatulaṅ lēbhē sādhu sādhviti cābravīt4.8.25৷৷


vāhinīpatiḥ chief of the army (of monkeys), sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, rāghavasya Rama's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā on hearing, atulam immeasurable, praharṣam happiness, lēbhē attained, sādhu sādhu iti good good thus, abravīt said.

On hearing Rama's words, Sugriva, chief of the army of monkeys experienced immeasurable happiness and exclaimed, 'you're great, you're great.'
rāma! śōkābhibhūtō.haṅ śōkārtānāṅ bhavāngatiḥ.

vayasya iti kṛtvā hi tvayyahaṅ paridēvayē4.8.26৷৷


rāma Rama!, aham I am, śōkābhibhūtaḥ overcome with sorrow, śōkārtānām for those in sorrow, bhavān you are, gatiḥ refuge, vayasyaḥ friend, iti kṛtvā treating you like this, aham I am, tvayi to you, paridēvayē express.

'Rama I am overwhelmed with sorrow. You are the refuge of the distressed. As you are a friend I ventilate all my grief to you.
tvaṅ hi pāṇipradānēna vayasyō mē.gnisākṣikam.

kṛtaḥ prāṇairbahumatassatyēnāpi śapāmi tē4.8.27৷৷


tvam you, pāṇipradānēna by offering your hand in friendship, agnisākṣikam with fire as witness, kṛtaḥ did, prāṇaiḥ more than life, bahumataḥ very great, mē vayasyaḥ hi being my friend, aham I am, satyēna truly, śapāmi vow, tē to you.

'I value your hand of friendship extended to me, with fire as witness more than my very life. I, on my own, offer my pledge of friendship.
vayasya iti kṛtvā ca visrabdhaḥ pravadāmyaham.

duḥkhamantargataṅ yanmē manō harati nityaśaḥ4.8.28৷৷


vayasyaḥ iti kṛtvā ca also considering you as a friend, aham I am, visrabdhaḥ relaxed , pravadāmi I am speaking, mē antargatam my feelings, duḥkham sorrow, nityaśaḥ always, manaḥ mind, harati is tormenting me.

ētāvaduktvā vacanaṅ bāṣpadūṣitalōcanaḥ.

bāṣpōpahatayā vācā nōccaiśśaknōti bhāṣitum4.8.29৷৷


ētāvat till that, vacanam words, uktvā spoken, bāṣpadūṣitalōcanaḥ vision blurred by tears, bāṣpadūṣitayā choked with tears, vācā with words, uccaiḥ loudly, bhāṣitum to speak further, na śaknōti was not able to do.

His vision blurred, words choked with tears he was unable to speak further.
bāṣpavēgaṅ tu sahasā nadīvēgamivāgatam.

dhārayāmāsa dhairyēṇa sugrīvō rāmasannidhau4.8.30৷৷


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, rāmasannidhau in front of Rama, nadīvēgamiva like a rushing river, sahasā instantaneously, āgatam flowing, bāṣpavēgam fast flowing tears, dhairyēṇa with patience, dhārayāmāsa checked

Quickly Sugriva controlled his tears streaming fast like the rushing river, with patience, Rama seated in front.
sannigṛhya tu taṅ bāṣpaṅ pramṛjya nayanē śubhē.

viniśśvasya ca tējasvī rāghavaṅ vākyamabravīt4.8.31৷৷


tējasvī brilliant, saḥ he, taṅ bāṣpam his tears, nigṛhya controlled, śubhē auspicious, nayanē eyes, pramṛjya wiped, viniḥśvasya took deep breath, rāghavam to Rama, vākyam these words, abravīt said

Effulgent Sugriva controlled his tears, wiped his bright eyes, took deep breath and said to Rama:
purā.haṅ vālinā rāma rājyātsvādavarōpitaḥ.

paruṣāṇi ca saṅśrāvya nirdhūtō.smi balīyasā4.8.32৷৷


rāma O Rama!, purā in the past, aham I, balīyasā powerful, vālinā by Vali, svāt from my own, rājyāt from the kingdom, avarōpitaḥ was uprooted, paruṣāṇi harsh (words), saṅśrāvya making me listen, nirdhūtaḥ thrown out, asmi I am.

'O Rama! I was subjected to the harsh words of powerful Vali in the past when he uprooted me from the kingdom and threw me out.
hṛtā bhāryā ca mē tēna prāṇēbhyō.pi garīyasī.

suhṛdaśca madīyā yē saṅyatā bandhanēṣu tē4.8.33৷৷


tēna by him, prāṇēbhyō.pi than my own life, garīyasī dearer, mē bhāryā my wife, hṛtā robbed, madīyāḥ my, yē whoever, suhṛdaḥ friends, tē they, bandhanēṣu under arrest, saṅyatāḥ imprisoned.

'I was robbed of my wife who is dearer than my own life. All my friends were rounded up and imprisoned.
yatnavāṅśca suduṣṭātmā madvināśāya rāghava.

bahuśastatprayuktāśca vānarā nihatā mayā4.8.34৷৷


rāghava O Rama!, duṣṭātmā evil-minded, saḥ he was, madvināśāya to kill me, yatnavāṅśca made effort, bahuśaḥ in many ways, tatprayuktāḥ sent by him, vānarāḥ monkeys, mayā by myself, nihatāḥ were killed.

'O Rama! this evil-minded one made several attempts to kill me. The monkeys he sent to kill me were themselves killed.
śaṅkayā tvētayā cēha dṛṣṭvā tvāmapi rāghava!.

nōpasarpāmyahaṅ bhītō bhayē sarvē hi bibhyati4.8.35৷৷


rāghava Rama, ahaṅ ca I also, ētayā by that, śaṅkayā with doubt, tvām api you also, iha here, dṛṣṭvā seeing, bhītaḥ scared, nōpasarpāmi I did not come near, bhayē out of fear, sarvē all, bibhyati hi one is scared.

'It is because of suspicion that I did not approach you. Every one is scared when there is ample reason to fear.
kēvalaṅ hi sahāyā mē hanumatpramukhāstvimē.

atō.haṅ dhārayāmyadya prāṇān kṛcchragatō.pi san4.8.36৷৷


kēvalam only, imē these, hanumatpramukhāḥ Hanuman and other chiefs, mē to me, sahāyāḥ helpful
ones, ataḥ therefore, aham I, kṛcchragatō.pi san in spite of all difficulties, adya now, prāṇān life, dhārayāmi I am surviving.

'Only Hanuman and other chiefs are helping me. Therefore, I am surviving in spite of all difficulties.
ētē hi kapayassnigdhā māṅ rakṣanti samantataḥ.

saha gacchanti gantavyē nityaṅ tiṣṭhanti ca sthitē4.8.37৷৷


snigdhāḥ affectionate, ētē these, kapayaḥ monkeys, mām me, samantataḥ on all sides, rakṣanti protecting, gantavyē have to go, saha with any one, gacchanti they go, sthitau stay when I stay, tiṣṭhanti ca stop.

'These monkeys out of love for me keep me protected from all sides. They go out with me when it is necessary and stay back whenever I stop (in order to guard me).
saṅkṣēpastvēṣa mē rāma kimuktvā vistaraṅ hi tē.

sa mē jyēṣṭhō ripurbhrātā vālī viśrutapauruṣaḥ4.8.38৷৷


rāma O Rama!, ēṣaḥ this, mē my, saṅkṣēpaḥ in brief, tē to you, vistaram in detail, uktvā telling, kim why, mē my, bhrātā brother, viśrutapauruṣaḥ a man of well-known prowess, saḥ vālī that Vali, ripuḥ enemy.

'O Rama! I tell you (my story) briefly. It is not necessary to go into details. My elder brother Vali, who is known for his prowess, is my enemy.
tadvināśāddhi mē duḥkhaṅ praṇaṣṭaṅ syādanantaram.

sukhaṅ mē jīvitaṅ caiva tadvināśanibandhanam4.8.39৷৷


tadvināśāddhi only after he is killed, anantaram thereafter, mē my, duḥkham sorrow, praṇaṣṭam can vanish, syāt will be, mē my, sukham happiness, jīvitaṅ caiva and life also, tadvināśanibandhanam is subject to his destruction.

'My sorrow will go only with his death. My happiness and my life are also subject to his destruction.
ēṣa mē rāma! śōkāntaśśōkārtēna nivēditaḥ.

duḥkhitassukhitō vāpi sakhyurnityaṅ sakhā gatiḥ4.8.40৷৷


rāma Rama, śōkārtēna out of sorrow, mē my, ēṣaḥ this, śōkāntaḥ end the sorrow, nivēditaḥ explained to you, sakhyuḥ for a friend, duḥkhitaḥ unhappy, sukhitō vāpi or happy, sakhā a friend, gatiḥ is the only refuge.

'This what I had to tell you out of sorrow. This is how my sorrow will end. In joy and in sorrow your friend is your refuge.
śrutvaitadvacanaṅ rāmassugrīvamidamabravīt.

kiṅ nimittamabhūdvairaṅ śrōtumicchāmi tattvataḥ4.8.41৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, ētat these, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, sugrīvam to Sugriva, idam these words, abravīt he spoke, kiṅ nimittam for what reason, vairam enmity, abhūt was caused, tattvataḥ truly, śrōtum to hear, icchāmi I wish

After hearing Sugriva, Rama said 'I wish to know the actual cause of this enmity.
sukhaṅ hi kāraṇaṅ śrutvā vairasya tava vānara!.

anantaraṅ vidhāsyāmi sampradhārya balābalam4.8.42৷৷


vānara O monkey, tava your, vairasya enmity's, kāraṇam cause, śrutvā after hearing, balābalam strength or weakness, sampradhārya after measuring, ānantaryāt thereafter, sukham vidhāsyāmi I will take action to make you happy.

'On hearing the cause of your enmity and considering your strength and weakness, I will take steps to make you happy.
balavān hi mamāmarṣaśśrutvā tvāmavamānitam.

vartatē hṛdayōtkampī prāvṛḍvēga ivāmbhasaḥ4.8.43৷৷


tvām your, avamānitam insulted, śrutvā after hearing, mama my, hṛdayōtkampī heart is agitated, balavān strong, āmarṣaḥ restless, ambhasaḥ rain water, prāpṛḍvēga iva enraged , vartatē feels

'On hearing about your humiliation I feel highly agitated at heart. I feel very much angry and restless like the water in rainy season.
hṛṣṭaḥ kathaya visrabdhō yāvadārōpyatē dhanuḥ.

sṛṣṭaśca hi mayā bāṇō nirastaśca ripustava4.8.44৷৷


mayā by me, dhanuḥ bow, yāvat until, ārōpyatē is strung, bāṇaḥ arrow, sṛṣṭaśca on the release, tava your, ripuḥ enemy, nirastaśca will be destroyed, hṛṣṭaḥ happily, visrabdhaḥ freely, kathaya speak.

'Tell me freely and cheerfully before I string the bow. Your enemy will be destroyed as soon as I release my arrow.'
ēvamuktastu sugrīvaḥ kākutsthēna mahātmanā.

praharṣamatulaṅ lēbhē caturbhissaha vānaraiḥ4.8.45৷৷


mahātmanā by the great, kākutsthēna by Rama, ēvam that way, uktaḥ having been told, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, caturbhiḥ with all the four, vānaraiḥ saha with monkeys, atulam immeasurable, praharṣam joy, lēbhē felt.

When the great Rama said this, Sugriva with all the four monkeys felt immeasurably glad.
tataḥ prahṛṣṭavadanassugrīvō lakṣmaṇāgrajē.

vairasya kāraṇaṅ tattvamākhyātumupacakramē4.8.46৷৷


tataḥ then, prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ smiling face, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, vairasya on account of enmity, kāraṇam cause, tattvam facts, lakṣmaṇāgrajē to the elder brother of Lakshmana, ākhyātum to tell, upacakramē started.

With a smile on his face, Sugriva started narrating to Lakshmana's elder brother the facts about the cause of his enmity (with Vali).
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē kiṣkindhākāṇḍē aṣṭamassargaḥ
Thus ends the eighth sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
