[Hanuman courses through the path of the Charanas -- crosses the ocean -- reaches Lanka]

ततो रावणनीतायाः सीतायाः शत्रुकर्शनः।

इयेष पदमन्वेष्टुं चारणाचरिते पथि।।5.1.1।।


ततः then, शत्रुकर्शनः crusher off enemies, रावणनीतायाः carried by Ravana, सीतायाः Sita's, पदम् whereabouts, अन्वेष्टुम् to search, चारणाचरिते where charanas the celestial bards move, पथि way, इयेष resolved .

Hanuman, crusher of enemies resolved to find the whereabouts of Sita, carried away by Ravana. He followed the path of the Charanas, celestial bards.
दुष्करं निष्प्रतिद्वन्द्वं चिकीर्षन् कर्म वानरः।

समुदग्रशिरोग्रीवो गवांपतिरिवाबभौ।।5.1.2।।


वानरः vanara, दुष्करम् formidable, निष्प्रतिद्वन्द्वम् which could not be challenged, चिकीर्षन् intending to (cross), समुदग्रशिरोग्रीवः raised his head and neck, गवां पतिः इव like the best of bulls, बभौ appeared.

Hanuman who raised his head and neck, intending to cross the formidable ocean which none else could accomplish, looked like a leading bull.
अथ वैडूर्यवर्णेषु शाद्वलेषु महाबलः।

धीरः सलिलकल्पेषु विचचार यथासुखम्।।5.1.3।।


अथ then, महाबलः mighty, धीरः calm, वैडूर्यवर्णेषु of the colour of vaidurya (tawny), सलिलकल्पेषु on the sheet of water (marshy land with green grass that looked like sheet of water), शाद्वलेषु on green grassy lands, यथासुखम् very easily, विचचार strdled.

Tawnyhued Hanuman, gifted with extraordinary strength and patience happily strolled on the marshy tracts of grassy land which had the colour of vaidurya.
द्विजान् वित्रासयन् धीमानुरसा पादपान् हरन्।

मृगांश्च सुबहून्निघ्नन् प्रवृद्ध इव केसरी।।5.1.4।।


धीमान् wise, द्विजान् birds, वित्रासयन् scaring, उरसा with his chest, पादपान् trees, हरन् uprooting, प्रवृद्धः grown, केसरी इव like a lion, सुबहून् groups, मृगांश्च animals also, निघ्नन् trampling.

Wise Hanuman went about like a lion scaring away birds, uprooting trees with his chest, and trampling many animals.
नीललोहितमांजिष्ठपत्रवर्णैः सितासितैः।

स्वभावविहितैश्चित्रैर्धातुभिः समलङ्कृतम्।।5.1.5।।

कामरूपिभिराविष्टमभीक्ष्णं सपरिच्छदैः।

यक्षकिन्नरगन्धर्वैर्देवकल्पैश्च पन्नगैः।।5.1.6।।


नीललोहितमांजिष्ठपत्रवर्णैः blue, red, yellow and green coloured, सितासितैः as well as with white and black colours, स्वभावविहितैः in their natural state, चित्रैः by wonderful ones, धातुभिः with minerals, समलङ्कृतम् decorated all over, कामरूपिभिः by those who take any form at free will, सपरिच्छदैः all surrounded by their retinue, यक्षकिन्नरगन्धर्वैः by yakshas, kinneras and gandharvas,अभीक्ष्णम् very much, आविष्टम् occupied, र्देवकल्पैश्च resembling gods, पन्नगैः by nagas.

The mountain was as though decorated with mineral rocks of varied colours like blue, red, yellow and green as well as black and white৷৷It was frequently visited by yakshas, kinneras, gandharvas and nagas surrounded by their retinue, capable of assuming any form at their free will rivalling gods and nagas in splendour.
स तस्य गिरिवर्यस्य तले नागवरायुते।

तिष्ठन् कपिवरस्तत्र ह्रदे नाग इवाबभौ।।5.1.7।।


सः that, कपिवरः leader of monkeys, तत्र there, नागवरायुते with lordly elephants, तस्य गिरिवर्यस्य at the great mountain, तले foot, तिष्ठन् stood, ह्रदे centre, नागः इव like elephant, अबभौ looked.

As the monkey leader stood at the foot of the great mountain filled with lordly elephants he looked like an elephant standing at the centre of a pond.
स सूर्याय महेन्द्राय पवनाय स्वयंभुवे।

भूतेभ्यश्चाञ्जलिं कृत्वा चकार गमने मतिम्।।5.1.8।।


सः that, सूर्याय to the Sun, महेन्द्राय to Mahendra, lord of the gods, पवनाय to the wind god, स्वयंभुवे to the creator, Brahma, भूतेभ्यः the attendants of lord Siva अञ्जलिम् salutations with folded palms, कृत्वा offered, गमने to go, मतिम् resolution, चकार he made.

Offering salutations with folded palms to the Sungod, to Mahendra, lord of the gods, to the windgod, to the Creator Brahma and to all the attendants of lord Siva, made up his mind to proceed (to Lanka).
अञ्जलिं प्राङ्मुखः कुर्वन् पवनायात्मयोनये।

ततो हि ववृधे गन्तुं दक्षिणो दक्षिणां दिशम्।।5.1.9।।
 

प्राङ्मुखः facing the east, आत्मयोनये his father, पवनाय windgod, अञ्जलिम् salutations with folded palms, कृत्वा having offered, ततः then, दक्षिण with equanimity, दक्षिणां दिशम् southern direction, गन्तुम् to depart, ववृधे हि grew in size.

Hanuman, endowed with great equanimity, facing the east and joining his palms by way of salutaion to the Windgod, his father, he enlarged his size and turned south in order to depart.
प्लवङ्गप्रवरैर्दृष्टः प्लवने कृतनिश्चयः।

ववृधे रामवृद्ध्यर्थं समुद्र इव पर्वसु।।5.1.10।।


प्लवङ्गप्रवरैः the monkey troops, दृष्टः were gazing, प्लवने taking leap, कृतनिश्चयः resolved, पर्वसु during the fullmoon days, समुद्रः इव like the sea, रामवृद्ध्यर्थम् for the welfare of Rama, ववृधे began to grow in size.

Having made up his mind to leap for the cause of Rama, Hanuman began to grow in size just as the sea grows during the fullmoon and newmoon days, while the monkey troops were watching.
निष्प्रमाणशरीरः सन् लिलङ्घयिषुरर्णवम्।

बाहुभ्यां पीडयामास चरणाभ्यां च पर्वतम्।।5.1.11।।


अर्णवम् ocean, लिलङ्घयिषुः one wishing to cross over, निष्प्रमाणशरीरः having an immeasurable figure, सन् while being, बाहुभ्याम् with both his arms, चरणाभ्यां च and with feet, पर्वतम् mountain, पीडयामास pressed.

Having swollen to an immeasurable figure, he pressed on the mountain with his feet and hands in an attempt to cross the ocean.
स चचालाचलश्चापि मुहूर्तं कपिपीडितः।

तरूणां पुष्पिताग्राणां सर्वं पुष्पमशातयत्।।5.1.12।।


कपिपीडितः pressed firmly by Hanuman, सः अचलश्चापि that mountain also, मुहूर्तम् for a moment, चचाल was shaken, पुष्पिताग्राणाम् flowers on the top, तरूणाम् of trees, सर्वम् all, पुष्पम् flowers, अशातयत् dropped down.

Pressed firmly by Hanuman, the mountain was shaken for a moment which caused the flowers to drop down from the tree tops.
तेन पादपमुक्तेन पुष्पौघेण सुगन्धिना।

सर्वतः संवृतः शैलो बभौ पुष्पमयो यथा।।5.1.13।।


शैलः the mountain, पादपमुक्तेन by those dropped down from the trees, सुगन्धिना full of fragrance, पुष्पौघेण heap of flowers, सर्वतः all over, संवृतः covered, यथा like, बभौ appeared, पुष्पमय: made of flowers.

With heaps of flowers full of fragrance fallen down from the trees all over the mountain, it looked as though it was a mountain of flowers.
तेन चोत्तमवीर्येण पीड्यमानः स पर्वतः।

सलिलं सम्प्रसुस्राव मदं मत्त इव द्विपः।।5.1.14।।


उत्तमवीर्येण by the highly valiant self, तेन by him, पीड्यमानः pressed very hard, सः पर्वतः that mountain, मत्तः intoxicated, द्विपः elephant, मदम् इव like the rut, सलिलम् the water, सम्प्रसुस्राव exuded profusely.

The mountain pressed hard under the feet of the valiant (Hanuman), discharged streams of water just as an elephant in rut would exude water of intoxication.
पीड्यमानस्तु बलिना महेन्द्रस्तेन पर्वतः।

रीतीर्निर्वर्तयामास काञ्चनाञ्जनराजतीः।।5.1.15।।


बलिना by the powerful, तेन by him, पीड्यमानः having pressed, महेन्द्रः पर्वतः mount Mahendra, काञ्चनाञ्चनराजतीः of gold and silver, रीतीः streams, निर्वर्तयामास started forming.

Pressed by the powerful Hanuman, mount Mahendra let out streams of the hue of gold and silver (containing the ores of these minerals)৷৷
मुमोच च शिलाः शैलो विशालाः समनःशिलाः।

मध्यमेनार्चिषा जुष्टा धूमराजीरिवानलः।।5.1.16।।


शैलः mountain, मध्यमेन in the midst, अर्चिषा by the flame, जुष्टा:possed with, अनलः fire, धूमराजीरिव like the columns of smoke, समनः शिलाः along with sulphur pigments, विशालाः big one, शिलाः boulders, मुमोच threw out, च even.

The mountain threw down big boulders along with sulphur just like fire emits columns of smoke, surrounded by flames.
गिरिणा पीड्यमानेन पीड्यमानानि सर्वतः।

गुहाविष्टानि भूतानि विनेदुर्विकृतैः स्वरैः।।5.1.17।।


गुहाविष्टानि of the caves, भूतानि creatures, पीड्यमानेन being pressed, गिरिणा by the mountain, सर्वतः all over, पीड्यमानानि on account of pressing, विकृतैः with horrible, स्वरैः voices, विनेदुः shrieked.

Squeezed on all sides of the mountain by Hanuman, all creatures living in the caves shrieked making horrible sounds .
स महासत्त्वसन्नादः शैलपीडानिमित्तजः।

पृथिवीं पूरयामास दिशश्चोपवनानि च।।5.1.18।।


शैलपीडानिमित्तजः caused by the crushing of the mountain, सः that, महासत्त्वसन्नादः loud noise of various creatures, पृथिवीम् the earth, दिशश्च all directions, उपवनानि च and the surrounding groves, पूरयामास filled.

Due to the crushing of the mountain, a loud noise of the various creatures shot up filling the earth in all directions and groves around.
शिरोभिः पृथुभिः सर्पा व्यक्तस्वस्तिकलक्षणैः।

वमन्तः पावकं घोरं ददंशुर्दशनैः शिलाः।।5.1.19।।


सर्पाः snakes, व्यक्तस्वस्तिकलक्षणैः with signs of swastika marks, पृथुभिः by wide ones, शिरोभिः with hoods, घोरम् terrible, पावकम् fire, वमन्तः poured out, दशनैः with fangs, शिलाः ददंशुः bit the rocks.

The snakes spread out their broad hoods manifesting swastika marks on them and bit the rocks with their fangs pouring out terrible fire.
तास्तदा सविषैर्दष्टाः कुपितैस्तैर्महाशिलाः।

जज्ज्वलुः पावकोद्दीप्ता बिभिदुश्च सहस्रधा।।5.1.20।।


तदा then, सविषैः by the venomous, कुपितैः by the angry, तैः by them, दष्टाः bitten, ताः महाशिलाः the huge rocks, पावकोददीप्ताः burnt by the flame, जज्वलुः burnt, सहस्रधा in a thousand pieces, बिभिदुश्च and broke.

Bitten by the venomous and angry snakes, the mountain was broken into a thousand pieces by the blazing flames.
यानि चौषधजालानि तस्मिन् जातानि पर्वते।

विषघ्नान्यपि नागानां न शेकुः शमितुं विषम्।।5.1.21।।


तस्मिन् पर्वते on that mountain, जातानि grown, यानि those, औषथजालानि medicinal herbs, विषघ्नान्यपि even those which can counteract poison, नागानाम् of the snakes, विषम् poison, शमितुम् to neutralize, न शेकुः were not able to.

Even the medicinal herbs grown on the mountain could not neutralize the effect of the poison of snakes.
भिद्यतेऽयं गिरिर्भूतैरिति मत्त्वा तपस्विनः।

त्रस्ता विद्याधरास्तस्मादुत्पेतुः स्त्री गणैः सह।।5.1.22।।

पानभूमिगतं हित्वा हैममासवभाजनम्।

पात्राणि च महार्हाणि करकांश्च हिरण्मयान्।।5.1.23।

लेह्यानुच्चावचान् भक्ष्यान् मांसानि विविधानि च।

आर्षभाणि च चर्माणि खडगांश्च कनकत्सरून्।।5.1.24।।


अयम् this, गिरिः mountain, भूतैः by creatures, भिद्यते broken, इति thus, मत्त्वा after, तपस्विनः ascetics, उत्पेतुः jumped up, विद्याधराः Vidyadharas, त्रस्ताः terrified, पानभूमिगतम् from the drinking places, हैमम् golden, आसवभाजनम् drinking cups, महार्हाणि valuable ones, करकांश्च goblets, उच्चावचान् various big and small ones, लेह्यान् food that is licked, भक्ष्यान् eatables, विविधानि of many kinds, मांसानि meat, आर्षभाणि of oxen, चर्माणि animal hides, कनकत्सरून् covered with golden sheaths, खडगांश्च swords, हित्वा after, स्त्रीगणैः सह along with groups of women, तस्मात् from that place, उत्पेतुः flew away.

Even the ascetics left the place approaching that the mountain would be broken into pieces by creatures. The alarmed vidyadharas leaped into the sky along with groups of their women, leaving behind golden jugs of wine as well as precious utensils, big and small sizes, and golden goblets, cups in the drinking place, as well as many tasty eatables like licking food, chewing food and many types of meat. They also left bullhides and swords with golden sheaths.
कृतकण्ठगुणाः क्षीबा रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनाः।

रक्ताक्षाः पुष्कराक्षाश्च गगनं प्रतिपेदिरे।।5.1.25।।


कृतकण्ठगुणाः wearing chains, क्षीबाः intoxicated ones, रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनाः wearing garlands and smearing with red unguents (sandalpaste), रक्ताक्षाः with red eyes, पुष्कराक्षाश्च with lotus like eyes, गगनम् to the sky, प्रतिपेदिरे flew into the sky.

The intoxicated vidyadharas with eyes red like lotuses, wearing garlands around the neck and smeared with red sandalpaste flew into the sky.
हारनूपुरकेयूरपारिहार्यधराः स्त्रियः।

विस्मिताः सस्मितास्तस्थुराकाशे रमणैः सह।।5.1.26।।


हारनूपुरकेयूरपारिहार्यधराः wearing necklaces, anklets and armlets, स्त्रियः women, विस्मिताः wonderstruck, सस्मिताः gently smiling, रमणैः सह with their lovers, आकाशे in the sky, तस्थुः stayed.

Adorned with necklaces, anklets and armlets, the vidyadharis stayed wonderstruck in the sky, smiling gently in the company of their lovers.
दर्शयन्तो महाविद्यां विद्याधरमहर्षयः।

सहितास्तस्थुराकाशे वीक्षाञ्चक्रुश्च पर्वतम्।।5.1.27।।


विद्याधरमहर्षयः the seers among vidyadharas, महाविद्याम् proficient in different fields of knowledge, दर्शयन्तः watching, सहिताः collectively, आकाशे in the sky, तस्थुः stayed, पर्वतम् mountain, वीक्षांचक्रुश्च were also watching.

The seers among the Vidyadharas, proficient in different fields of knowledge were also watching the mountain from the sky along with others.
शुश्रुवुश्च तदा शब्दमृषीणां भावितात्मनाम्।

चारणानां च सिद्धानां स्थितानां विमलेऽम्बरे।।5.1.28।।


तदा then, विमले in a pure, अम्बरे in the sky, स्थितानाम् of those stationed, चारणानाम् of charanas, सिद्धानाम् of siddhas, भावितात्मनाम् of highly, ऋषीणां च and of seers, शब्दम् sound, शुश्रुवुः heard.

Then the vidyadharas heard the words of praise(of Hanuman) by the sages, seekers of the ultimate truth, the charanas and the siddhas who stood and watched in the clear sky:
एष पर्वतसङ्काशो हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः।

तितीर्षति महावेगस्समुद्रं मकरालयम्।।5.1.29।।


पर्वतसङ्काशः resembling a mountain, मारुतात्मजः son of the windgod (Hanuman), महावेगः swift, एषः him, हनुमान् Hanuman, मकरालयम् abode of crocodiles, समुद्रम् ocean, तितीर्षति desiring to cross.

"Hanuman the son of the Windgod, who is like a mountain, with extraordinary might intends to cross the ocean, the abode of crocodiles".
रामार्थं वानरार्थं च चिकीर्षन् कर्म दुष्करम्।

समुद्रस्य परं पारं दुष्प्रापं प्राप्तुमिच्छति।।5.1.30।।


रामार्थम् for the purpose of Rama, वानरार्थं च for the sake of vanaras also, दुष्करम् impossible, कर्म task, चिकीर्षन् desirous of achieving, समुद्रस्य of the ocean, दुष्प्रापम् difficult to reach, परं पारम् the other side, प्राप्तुम् to reach, इच्छति he wishes.

"For the sake of Rama and the vanaras he wants to reach the other shore of the ocean, which is difficult, and indeed impossible".
इति विद्याधराः श्रुत्वा वचस्तेषां महात्मनाम्।

तमप्रमेयं ददृशुः पर्वते वानरर्षभम्।।5.1.31।।


विद्याधराः vidyadharas, इति thus, महात्मनाम् of great sages, तेषाम् of them, वचः word, श्रुत्वा having heard, पर्वते on the mountain, अप्रमेयम् beyond measure, वानरर्षभम् bull among the vanaras, Hanuman, तम् him, ददृशुः saw.

The vidyadharas heard the sages speaking in that manner on the mountain. They beheld Hanuman, the bull among vanaras, whose strength was beyond measure.
दुधुवे च स रोमाणि चकम्पे चाचलोपमः।

ननाद सुमहानादं सुमहानिव तोयदः।।5.1.32।।


अचलोपमः huge as mountain, सः he, रोमाणि hair, दुधुवे shook, चकम्पे च and moved, सुमहान् great, तोयदः इव like a cloud, सुमहानादम् huge sound, ननाद produced.

Hanuman, huge as a mountain moved his body and shook the hair on his body, thundering like a cloud.
आनुपूर्व्येण वृत्तं च लाङ्गूलं लोमभिश्चितम्।

उत्पतिष्यन् विचिक्षेप पक्षिराज इवोरगम्।।5.1.33।।


उत्पतिष्यन् ready to take off, आनुपूर्व्येण in an order, वृत्तम् covered, लोमभिः with hair, चितम् full of, लाङ्गूलम् tail, पक्षिराजः king of birds, उरगं इव like a serpent, विचिक्षेप shook, cast down.

Like the king of birds Garuda would shake a serpent, he shook his tail covered with hair in order to take off.
तस्य लाङ्गूलमाविद्धमात्तवेगस्य पृष्ठतः।

ददृशे गरुडेनेव ह्रियमाणो महोरगः।।5.1.34।।


आत्तवेगस्य of great, तस्य his, पृष्ठतः at the back, अविद्धम् curled, लाङ्गूलम् tail, गरुडेन by Garuda, ह्रियमाणः carried off, महोरगः इव like a big serpent, ददृशे appeared.

Hanuman had the tail curled at his back which appeared like a big serpent being carried off by Garuda.
बाहू संस्तम्भयामास महापरिघसन्निभौ।

ससाद च कपिः कट्यां चरणौ सञ्चुकोच च।।5.1.35।।


कपिः monkey, महापरिघसन्निभौ like huge iron clubs, बाहू arms, संस्तम्भयामास pressing down firmly , कट्याम् in the waist, ससाद crouched in, चरणौ his feet, सञ्चुकोच च contracted.

The monkey fixed his arms, looking like iron clubs, firmly on the mountain and
crouched his waist and contracted his feet.
संहृत्य च भुजौ श्रीमांस्तथैव च शिरोधराम्।

तेजः सत्त्वं तथा वीर्यमाविवेश स वीर्यवान्।।5.1.36।।


श्रीमान् glorious, वीर्यवान् courageous, सः Hanuman, भुजौ च even shoulders, तथैव च in the same way, शिरोधराम् his head, संहृत्य after contracting, तेजः glow, सत्त्वम् energy, तथा so also, वीर्यम् vigour, आविवेश summoned up.

The glorious and courageous Hanuman his head and shoulders contracted, summoned up all his energy and vigour.
मार्गमालोकयन्दूरादूर्ध्वं प्रणिहितेक्षणः।

रुरोध हृदये प्राणानाकाशमवलोकयन्।।5.1.37।।


ऊर्ध्वम् upward, प्रणिहितेक्षणः setting his eyes up, दूरात् from a distance, मार्गम् direction, आलोकयन् while looking at, आकाशम् sky, अवलोकयन् looking at, प्राणान् breath, हृदये in the chest,रुरोध restrained.

Having cast his eyes upward in order to view the distance and direction in which he had to leap, he restrained his breath in the chest while looking at the sky.
पद्भ्यां दृढमवस्थानं कृत्वा स कपिकुञ्जरः।

निकुञ्च्य कर्णौ हनुमानुत्पतिष्यन् महाबलः।।

वानरान् वानरश्रेष्ठ इदं वचनमब्रवीत्।।5.1.38।।


कपिकुञ्जरः an elephant among monkeys, महाबलः very strong one, वानरश्रेष्ठः best of vanaras, सः हनुमान् that Hanuman, पद्भ्याम् feet, दृढम् firmly, अवस्थानम् standing in that position, कृत्वा did, कर्णौ ears, निकुञ्च्य contracted, उत्पतिष्यन् while preparing to leap, वानरान् vanaras, इदम् this, वचनम् word, अब्रवीत् said.

A mighty elephant among vanaras, Hanuman holding his feet firmly and standing in that position, contracted his ears and addressed the monkeys, when he was about to leap:
यथा राघवनिर्मुक्तः शरः श्वसनविक्रमः।

गच्छेत्तद्वद्गमिष्यामि लङ्कां रावणपालिताम्।।5.1.39।।


राघवनिर्मुक्तः released by Raghava, शरः arrow, यथा similar manner, गच्छेत् goes, तद्वत् like that, श्वसनविक्रमः with the speed of wind, रावणपालिताम् governed by Ravana, लङ्काम् Lanka, गमिष्यामि I will reach.

"Just like an arrow released by Raghava would fly, I too will proceed with the speed of the wind to reach Lanka ruled by Ravana.
न हि द्रक्ष्यामि यदि तां लङ्कायां जनकात्मजाम्।

अनेनैव हि वेगेन गमिष्यामि सुरालयम्।।5.1.40।।


लङ्कायाम् in Lanka, तां जनकात्मजाम् that daughter of Janaka, न हि द्रक्ष्यामि यदि If I am not able to find, अनेन with this, वेगेनैव हि with speed indeed, सुरालयम् abode of gods, गमिष्यामि I will go.

"If I am not able to find the daughter of Janaka at Lanka I will go to heaven, abode of the gods, with the same speed.
यदि वा त्रिदिवे सीतां न द्रक्ष्याम्यकृतश्रमः।

बद्ध्वा राक्षसराजानमानयिष्यामि रावणम्।।5.1.41।।


त्रिदिवे in heaven, सीताम् Sita, न द्रक्ष्यामि यदि वा If I do not find, अकृतश्रमः in spite of all my efforts, राक्षसराजानम् king of rakshasas, रावणम् Ravana, बद्ध्वा bind, आनयिष्यामि will bring.

"If I do not find Sita in heaven in spite of my efforts, I will bind that king of demons, Ravana and bring him here.
सर्वथा कृतकार्योऽहमेष्यामि सह सीतया।

आनयिष्यामि वा लङ्कां समुत्पाट्य सरावणाम्।।5.1.42।।


अहम् I, सर्वथा by all means, कृतकार्यः doing my duty successfully, सह सीतया along with Sita, एष्यामि I will come, वा or, सरावणाम् along with Ravana, लङ्काम् Lanka, समुत्पाट्य after uprooting, आनयिष्यामि will bring.

"I will, by all means return successful with Sita or else I will uproot Lanka along with Ravana and bring him here".
एवमुक्त्वा तु हनुमान्वानरान्वानरोत्तमः।।5.1.43।।

उत्पपाताथ वेगेन वेगवानविचारयन्।

सुपर्णमिव चात्मानं मेने स कपिकुञ्जरः।।5.1.44।।


वानरोत्तमः foremost vanara, हनुमान् Hanuman, वानरान् to vanaras, एवम् that way, उक्त्वा having said, अथ then, अविचारयन् without any exertion, वेगवान् swift, वेगेन speedily, उत्पपात leaped, सः he, कपिकुञ्जरः best of vanaras, elephantlike, आत्मानम् himself, सुपर्णमिव like bird Suparna (Garuda), मेने he felt.

Having thus addressed the monkeys the foremost of vanaras,Hanuman endowed with great speed leaped without any exertion. The elephant among monkeys felt like Garuda.
समुत्पतति तस्मिंस्तु वेगात्ते नगरोहिणः।

संहृत्य विटपान् सर्वान् समुत्पेतुः समन्ततः।।5.1.45।।


तस्मिन् when he, समुत्पतति was leaping, वेगात् swiftly, ते they, नगरोहिणः numerous trees, सर्वान् all the, विटपान् branches, संहृत्य drawing together, समन्ततः from all over, समुत्पेतुः flew.

When he took off, numerous trees on the mountain drawing together the branches all over flew along with him.
स मत्तकोयष्टिमकान् पादपान् पुष्पशालिनः।

उद्वहन्नूरुवेगेन जगाम विमलेऽम्बरे।।5.1.46।।


सः he, मत्तकोयष्टिमकान् lapwings in heat, पुष्पशालिनः full of flowers, पादपान् trees, ऊरुवेगेन by the speed of his thighs, उद्वहन् while coursing, विमले pristine (cloudless), अम्बरे in the sky, जगाम went.

He swept away the lapwings in heat on the blossoms of the trees by the speed of his thighs while he coursed through the cloudless sky.
ऊरुवेगोद्धता वृक्षा मुहूर्तं कपिमन्वयुः।

प्रस्थितं दीर्घमध्वानं स्वबन्धुमिव बान्धवाः।।5.1.47।।


ऊरुवेगोद्धताः bent forward by the force of his thighs, वृक्षाः trees, दीर्घम् long, अध्वानम् path, प्रस्थितम् starting, स्वबन्धुम् one's kith and kin, बान्धवाः इव like the relatives, कपिम् Hanuman, मुहूर्तम् for a while, अन्वयुः followed.

Swept away by the force of his thighs, the trees bent forward following him for a while just as relatives accompany their kith and kin on long travel.
तमूरुवेगोन्मथिताः सालाश्चान्ये नगोत्तमाः।

अनुजग्मुर्हनूमन्तं सैन्या इव महीपतिम्।।5.1.48।।


ऊरुवेगोन्मथिताः uprooted by the speed of thighs, सालाश्च sala trees also, अन्ये other, नगोत्तमाः great trees, सैन्याः troops, महीपतिम् इव like the king, हनूमन्तम् Hanuman, अनुजग्मुः follow.

Uprooted by the force of Hanuman's thighs,great trees like sala followed him just like the troops follow the king.
सुपुष्पिताग्रैर्बहुभिः पादपैरन्वितः कपिः।

हनुमान् पर्वताकारो बभूवाद्भुतदर्शनः।।5.1.49।।


बहुभिः by many, सुपुष्पिताग्रैः with blossomed tops, पादपैः with trees, अन्वित: endowed with, कपिः vanaras, पर्वताकारः mountain like, हनुमान् Hanuman, अद्भुतदर्शनः queer appearance, बभूव became.

With numerous trees laden with flowers following him, Hanuman who looked like a mountain, presented a queer spectable.
सारवन्तोऽथ ये वृक्षा न्यमज्जन् लवणाम्भसि।

भयादिव महेन्द्रस्य पर्वता वरुणालये।।5.1.50।।


अथ and then, सारवन्तः huge, ये those, वृक्षाः trees, महेन्द्रस्य Indra's, भयात् out of fear, पर्वताः mountains, वरुणालये इव like the abode of Varuna, ocean, लवणाम्भसि in the salt sea, न्यमज्जन् sank.

Then the huge trees sank into the ocean of salt water even as mountains did, afraid of Indra's (thunderbolt).
स नानाकुसुमैः कीर्णः कपिः साङ्कुरकोरकैः।

शुशुभे मेघसङ्काशः खद्योतैरिव पर्वतः।।5.1.51।।


साङ्कुरकोरकैः with sprouts and buds, नानाकुसुमैः with different kinds of flowers, कीर्णः spread over, मेघसङ्काशः resembling a cloud, सः कपिः that Hanuman, खद्योतैः covered with fireflies, पर्वतः इव like a mountain, शुशुभे was shining brightly.

Covered with tender sprouts and buds of different kinds of flowers Hanuman shone brightly like a flying mountain with fireflies.
विमुक्तास्तस्य वेगेन मुक्त्वा पुष्पाणि ते द्रुमाः।

अवशीर्यन्त सलिले निवृत्ताः सुहृदो यथा।।5.1.52।।


तस्य his, वेगेन speed, विमुक्ताः released, ते द्रुमाः those trees, पुष्पाणि flowers, मुक्त्वा having dropped, निवृत्ताः returning, सुहृदो यथा like friends, सलिले water, अवशीर्यन्त fallen into water.

Shedding their blossoms (under his thrust) the trees dropped into the waters of the sea just like close relatives follow at the time of farewell.
लघुत्वेनोपपन्नं तद्विचित्रं सागरेऽपतत्।

द्रुमाणां विविधं पुष्पं कपिवायुसमीरितम्।।5.1.53।।

ताराचितमिवाकाशं प्रबभौ स महार्णवः।


लघुत्वेन being light, उपपन्नम् risen up, विचित्रम् colourful, कपिवायुसमीरितम् driven by the wind caused by the speed of Hanuman, द्रुमाणाम् of the trees, तत् there, विविधम् various, पुष्पम् flowers, सागरे in the ocean, अपतत् fell, महार्णवः ocean, ताराचितम् filled with stars, आकाशमिव like the sky, प्रबभौ सः glowing.

Driven by the wind caused by Hanuman's speed a variety of flowers fell into the ocean because of their light weight and the ocean looked colourful and bright like the starspangled sky.
पुष्पौघेणानुबद्धेन नानावर्णेन वानरः।

बभौ मेघ इवाकाशे विद्युद्गण विभूषितः।।5.1.54।।


नानावर्णेन of different colours, अनुबद्धेन stuck, पुष्पौघेण by the blossoms, वानरः monkey (Hanuman), आकाशे in the sky, विद्युद्गणविभूषितः glowing like lightning, मेघः इव like the cloud, बभौ looked.

Covered with blossoms of different kinds and colours, Hanuman looked like a cloud brightened by lightnings in the sky.
तस्य वेगसमाधूतैः पुष्पैस्तोयमदृश्यत।।5.1.55।।

ताराभिरभिरामाभिरुदिताभिरिवाम्बरम्।


तस्य his, वेगसमाधूतैः dropped by the speed, पुष्पैः with flowers, तोयम् water, उदिताभिः rising ones, अभिरामाभिः by the very enchanting, ताराभिः by stars, अम्बरमिव like the sky, अदृश्यत appeared.

The seawater looked splendid with flowers dropped by dint of his speed. It resembled the firmament spangled with enchanting stars just risen in the sky.
तस्याम्बरगतौ बाहू ददृशाते प्रसारितौ।।5.1.56।।

पर्वताग्राद्विनिष्क्रान्तौ पञ्चास्याविव पन्नगौ।


प्रसारितौ stretched out, अम्बरगतौ spread in the sky, तस्य his, बाहू two arms, पर्वताग्रात् from the top of the mountain, विनिष्क्रान्तौ emerging, पञ्चास्यौ fivehooded, पन्नगौ इव like snakes, ददृशाते looked.

That great Vanara appeared as if he was gulping the entire ocean with its rising waves. While he was looking upward it appeared as though he was keen to drink in the sea as well.
पिबन्निव बभौ चापि सोर्मिमालं महार्णवम्।।5.1.57।।

पिपासुरिव चाकाशं ददृशे स महाकपिः।


सः that, महाकपिः great vanara, सोर्मिमालम् with its rising waves, महार्णवम् ocean, पिबन्निव as if gulping, बभौ looked, आकाशम् sky, च and , अपि also, पिपासुरिव as if thirsty, ददृशे looked.

While he was looking upward, that great vanara appeared as if, parched with thirst, he was gulping the entire ocean with its rising waves.
तस्य विद्युत्प्रभाकारे वायुमार्गानुसारिणः।।5.1.58।।

नयने विप्रकाशेते पर्वतस्थाविवानलौ।


वायुमार्गानुसारिणः of him following the direction of the wind, तस्य his, विद्युत्प्रभाकारे both appearing like the glow of lightning, नयने eyes, पर्वतस्थौ on the mountain, अनलौ इव like two fires, विप्रकाशेते very glittering.

As he was moving in the sky following the direction of the wind, his eyes blazed like two fires burning on the mountain, flashing like lightning.
पिङ्गे पिङ्गाक्षमुख्यस्य बृहती परिमण्डले।।5.1.59।।

चक्षुषी सम्प्राकाशेते चन्द्रसूर्याविवोदितौ।


पिङ्गाक्षमुख्यस्य of the leader of monkeys, पिङ्गे reddishbrown, बृहती large, परिमण्डले round in shape, चक्षुषी eyes, उदितौ risen, चन्द्रसूर्याविव like Moon and Sun, सम्प्रकाशेते were shining.

The large, round, reddishbrown eyes of Hanuman shed their bright light like the rising Moon and Sun.
मुखं नासिकया तस्य ताम्रया ताम्रमाबभौ।।5.1.60।।

सन्ध्यया समभिस्पृष्टं यथा तत्सूर्यमण्डलम्।


तस्य his, ताम्रम् copperred, मुखम् face, ताम्रया by the red colour, नासिकया of the nose, सन्ध्यया by twilight, समभिस्पृष्टम् coming close, तत् that, सूर्यमण्डलं यथा like the Sun's orb, आबभौ appeared.

By the reflection of his copperyred nose, his face looked red like the Sun's orb coming close at twilight.
लाङ्गूलं च समाविद्धं प्लवमानस्य शोभते।।5.1.61।।

अम्बरे वायुपुत्रस्य शक्रध्वज इवोच्छ्रितम्।


अम्बरे in the sky, प्लवमानस्य when he was flying, वायुपुत्रस्य of the son of the Windgod, समाविद्धम् installed, लाङ्गूलम् tail, उच्छ्रितं lifted up (in the air), शक्रध्वजः इव like the flag staff of Indra, शोभते looks splendid.

As the son of the Windgod was flying through the sky, his coiled up tail looked splendid like the banner installed at the festival in honour of Indra (on the fifteenth day of the month of Bhadrapada).
लाङ्गूलचक्रेण महान् शुक्लदंष्ट्रोऽनिलात्मजः।।5.1.62।।

व्यरोचत महाप्राज्ञः परिवेषीव भास्करः।


शुक्लदंष्ट्रः whiteteethed, महाप्राज्ञः very wise, महान् great, अनिलात्मजः son of the Windgod, लाङ्गूलचक्रेण curled up tail, परिवेषी surrounded, भास्करः इव like the Sun, व्यरोचत halo

With his white teeth and curled up tail, the wise son of the Windgod looked splendid like the halo of the Sungod.
स्फिग्देशेनाभिताम्रेण रराज स महाकपिः।।5.1.63।।

महता दारितेनेव गिरिर्गैरिकधातुना।


सः महाकपिः that great vanara, अभिताम्रेण with red one, स्फिग्देशेन with his buttocks, दारितेन इव as if split, महता by huge, गैरिकधातुना deposit of minerals, गिरिः इव like mountain, रराज shone.

The great monkey with copperred buttocks (other parts being dark) looked splendid like a cleft mountain with a huge deposit of minerals shining red.
तस्य वानरसिंहस्य प्लवमानस्य सागरम्।।5.1.64।।

कक्षान्तरगतो वायुर्जीमूत इव गर्जति।


सागरम् ocean, प्लवमानस्य while he was crossing, तस्य his, वानरसिंहस्य lion like vanara, कक्षान्तरगतः through the armpits, वायुः wind, जीमूतः इव like thundering cloud, गर्जति roared.

The wind passing through the arm pits of the lionlike vanara crossing the ocean sounded like a thundering cloud.
खे यथा निपतत्युल्का ह्युत्तरान्ताद्विनिःसृता।।5.1.65।।

दृश्यते सानुबन्धा च तथा स कपिकुञ्जरः।


उत्तरान्तात् from the northern part, विनिःसृता released, सानुबन्धा च follows, उल्का a meteor, खे in the sky, यथा like, दृश्यते was seen, सः that, कपिकुञ्जरः elephant like vanara, तथा so, निपतति falling. .

The elephantlike monkey was seen darting across the ocean(going from north to south) like a meteor risen in the north along with its tailend falling down the sky.
पतत्पतङ्गसङ्काशो व्यायतः शुशुभे कपिः।।5.1.66।।

प्रवृद्ध इव मातङ्गः कक्ष्यया बध्यमानया।


पतत्पतङ्गसङ्काशः resembled the setting Sun, व्यायतः broad, कपिः monkey (Hanuman), बध्यमानया bound with, कक्ष्यया with the girth, प्रवृद्धः expanded to an enormous size, मातङ्गः इव elephant like, शुशुभे appeared.

The vanara expanded into an enormous size form appeared as though moving like the setting Sun. He looked like a huge elephant bound round the waist.
उपरिष्टाच्छरीरेण छायया चावगाढया।।5.1.67।।

सागरे मारुताविष्टा नौरिवासीत्तदा कपिः।


तदा then, कपि: vanara, उपरिष्टात् the top, शरीरेण with his body, सागरे in the ocean, अवगाढया reflected, छायया च shadow also, मारुताविष्टा swept by the wind, नौरिव like the ship, आसीत् appeared.

When the vanara was flying in the sky, his shadow reflected in the ocean looked like a
ship driven by the wind and sailing on the sea below (as if the lower part of his body was under water and upper part occupied the sky)
यं यं देशं समुद्रस्य जगाम स महाकपिः।

स स तस्योरुवेगेन सोन्माद इव लक्ष्यते।।5.1.68।।


सः that, महाकपिः great vanara, समुद्रस्य of the ocean, यं यं देशं to whichever place, जगाम went, सः सः those, तस्य his, ऊरुवेगेन by the speed of his thighs, सोन्मादः इव riotous with eddies, whirlpools and revolving foam etc.like, लक्ष्यते was seen.

Whichever part of the sea over which that monkey flew, it appeared as though it was riotous with eddies, whirlpools and revolving foam etc., stirred up by the speed of his thighs.
सागरस्योर्मिजालानामुरसा शैलवर्ष्मणाम्।

अभिघ्नंस्तु महावेगः पुप्लुवे स महाकपिः।।5.1.69।।


महावेगः very swift, सः that, महाकपिः great vanara, शैलवर्ष्मणाम् as mountains, सागरस्य of the ocean, ऊर्मिजालानाम् the rows of waves, उरसा by his chest, अभिघ्नन् while dashing against, पुप्लुवे flew.

As the great vanara was flying swiftly, the oceanic waves in rows dashing against his chest rose as high as the mountain.
कपिवातश्च बलवान् मेघवातश्च निःसृतः।

सागरं भीमनिर्घोषं कम्पयामासतुर्भृशम्।।5.1.70।।


बलवान् forceful, कपिवातश्च wind generated by the swift movement of the monkey, निःसृतः rushing towards, मेघवातश्च and the wind of the clouds, भीम निर्घोषम् creating dreadful sounds, सागरम् ocean, भृशम् violently, कम्पयामासतुः both started agitating.

The forceful wind generated by the monkey moving swiftly, and by the clouds agitated
the ocean violently, creating dreadful sounds.
विकर्षन्नूर्मिजालानि बृहन्ति लवणाम्भसि।

पुप्लुवे कपिशार्दूलो विकिरन्निव रोदसी।।5.1.71।।


कपिशार्दूलः a tiger among vanaras, लवणाम्भसि the saltwater ocean, बृहन्ति many, ऊर्मिजालानि mighty waves of the ocean, विकर्षन् pulling across, रोदसी the intermediary space (अन्तरिक्ष), विकिरन्निव drawing and dividing the earth and sky like, पुप्लुवे leaped forward.

As the tiger among the monkeys pushed the big network of waves of the saltwater ocean and leaped forward, it appeared as if he was drawing the intermediary space dividing the earth and the sky.
मेरुमन्दरसङ्काशानुद्धतान् स महार्णवे।

अत्यक्रामन्महावेगस्तरङ्गान् गणयन्निव।।5.1.72।।


महावेगः one who is of high speed, महार्णवे in the ocean, उद्धतान् risen, मेरुमन्दरसङ्काशान् resembling mountain Meru and Mandara, तरङ्गान् waves, गणयन्निव as if counting, सः that, अत्यक्रामत् crossed.

Hanuman moving along in high speed looked as if he was counting the mighty waves risen ike Meru and Mandara mountains.
तस्य वेगसमुद्धूतं जलं सजलदं तदा।

अम्बरस्थं विबभ्राज शारदाभ्रमिवाततम्।।5.1.73।।


तदा then, तस्य his, वेगसमुद्धूतम् raised by his onrush, सजलदम् along with the cloud, जलम् water, अम्बरस्थम् found in the sky, आततम् stretched, शारदाभ्रमिव like the autumnal clouds, विबभ्राज shone.

Then the water raised by his onrush along with the cloud widely spread in the sky shone like an outstreched autumnal cloud.
तिमिनक्रझषाः कूर्मा दृश्यन्ते विवृतास्तदा।

वस्त्रापकर्षणेनेव शरीराणि शरीरिणाम्।।5.1.74।।


तदा then, तिमिनक्रझषाः whales, crocodiles and fish, कूर्माः tortoises, वस्त्रापकर्षणेन clothes put off, शरीरिणाम् of the bodies, शरीराणीव limbs of the body, विवृताः exposed, दृश्यन्ते appeared.

On account of the seawater rising up, the whales, crocodiles, fish and tortoises laid bare like the limbs of the body disrobed.
प्लवमानं समीक्ष्याथ भुजङ्गाः सागरालयाः।

व्योम्नि तं कपिशार्दूलं सुपर्ण इति मेनिरे।।5.1.75।।


अथ and then, व्योम्नि in the sky, प्लवमानम् coursing through, तं कपिशार्दूलम् that tiger among vanaras, समीक्ष्य seeing, सागरालयाः those in the abode of the sea, भुजङ्गाः serpents, सुपर्णः इति to be Garuda, मेनिरे thought.

Seeing Hanuman, the tiger among vanaras, coursing through the sky the serpents in their seaabode mistook him for Garuda.
दशयोजनविस्तीर्णा त्रिंशद्योजनमायता।

छाया वानरसिंहस्य जले चारुतराभवत्।।5.1.76।।


दशयोजनविस्तीर्णा spread over ten yojanas in breadth, त्रिंशद्योजनम् thirty yojanas, आयता long, वानरसिंहस्य of the lion among monkeys, छाया shadow, जले in water, चारुतरा more pleasing, अभवत् looked.

The shadow of Hanuman, the lion among monkeys, thirty yojanas long and ten yojanas in breadth appeared more pleasing৷৷
श्वेताभ्रघनराजीव वायुपुत्रानुगामिनी।

तस्य सा शुशुभे छाया वितता लवणाम्भसि।।5.1.77।।


वायुपुत्रानुगामिनी following the Windgod's son, लवणाम्भसि in the salty sea, वितता spread out, तस्य his, सा that, छाया shadow, श्वेताभ्रघनराजीव like dark row of clouds sailing in the pristine sky, शुशुभे shone.

The broad shadow of the son of the Windgod in the sea following him shone like a dark row of clouds sailing in the pristine sky.
शुशुभे स महातेजा महाकायो महाकपिः।

वायुमार्गे निरालम्बे पक्षवानिव पर्वतः।।5.1.78।।


महातेजाः splendid, महाकायः one with a huge body, सः he, महाकपिः great vanara, निरालम्बे without any support, वायुमार्गे in the direction of the wind, पक्षवान् having wings, पर्वतः इव like a mountain, शुशुभे seemed.

Hanuman the great vanara, splendid with a huge body coursing through the air seemed like a winged mountain flying the sky without any support.
येनासौ याति बलवान् वेगेन कपिकुञ्जरः।

तेन मार्गेण सहसा द्रोणीकृत इवार्णवः।।5.1.79।।


बलवान् powerful, असौ he, कपिकुञ्जरः an elephant among monkeys, वेगेन swiftly, येन मार्गेण the path, याति proceeding, तेन by that, सहसा instantly, अर्णवः the sea, द्रोणीकृतः इव like a valley betwen two mountains.

As the powerful monkey, an elephant among vanaras, was proceeding swiftly along, the ocean got instantly transformed into a trough on account of water swelling by the force of his flight.
आपाते पक्षिसङ्घानां पक्षिराज इव व्रजन्।

हनुमान् मेघजालानि प्रकर्षन् मारुतो यथा।।5.1.80।।


हनुमान् Hanuman, मारुतो यथा like the wind, मेघजालानि strings of clouds, प्रकर्षन् while attracting, पक्षिसङ्घानाम् of the group of birds, आपाते when landed, व्रजन् while moving, पक्षिराजः इव like the king of birds.

Hanuman was found pulling clusters of big clouds along with him like the Windgod and appeared like Garuda,the king of birds, drawing flocks of birds along with him at the time of landing.
पाण्डुरारुणवर्णानि नीलमाञ्जिष्ठकानि च।

कपिनाकृष्यमाणानि महाभ्राणि चकाशिरे।।5.1.81।।


कपिना by the vanara, आकृष्यमाणानि drawing, पाण्डुरारुणवर्णानि white and red colour, नीलमाञ्जिष्ठकानि च blue and yellow clouds, महाभ्राणि big clouds, चकाशिरे shining.

While Hanuman was drawing big clouds which were either white or red or blue or yellow, he looked charming.
प्रविशन्नभ्रजालानि निष्पतंश्च पुनः पुनः।

प्रच्छन्नश्च प्रकाशश्च चन्द्रमा इव लक्ष्यते।।5.1.82।।


अभ्रजालानि strings of clouds, पुनः पुनः again and again, प्रविशन् while entering, निष्पतंश्च and while coming out, प्रच्छन्नश्च hiding, प्रकाशश्च and shining, चन्द्रमाः इव like the Moon, लक्ष्यते was seen.

Entering into and emerging from the clouds, he looked like the Moon that appears and disappears (behind a bank of clouds).
प्लवमानं तु तं दृष्ट्वा प्लवङ्गं त्वरितं तदा।

ववर्षुः पुष्पवर्षाणि देवगन्धर्वदानवाः।।5.1.83।।


तदा then, त्वरितम् quickly, प्लवमानम् crossing, तं प्लवङ्गम् that monkey, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, देवगन्धर्वदानवाः deva, gandharvas and danavas, पुष्पवर्षाणि rain of flowers, ववर्षुः rained.

Then seeing Hanuman crossing quickly, the gods, gandharvas and demons rained flowers on him.
तताप न हि तं सूर्यः प्लवन्तं वानरोत्तमम्।

सिषेवे च तदा वायू रामकार्यार्थसिद्धये।।5.1.84।।


तदा then, प्लवन्तम् while he was leaping, तं वानरोत्तमम् that best of vanaras, सूर्यः Sun, रामकार्यार्थसिद्धये for accomplishing Rama's task, न हि तताप did not discharge heat, वायुः च and even wind, सिषेवे served cool.

The Sun spared Hanuman from the heat and even the Windgod served him, blowing cool while he was taking leaps in order to fulfil Rama's mission.
ऋषयस्तुष्टुवुश्चैनं प्लवमानं विहायसा।

जगुश्च देवगन्धर्वाः प्रशंसन्तो महौजसम्।।5.1.85।।


विहायसा in the sky, प्लवमानम् while he leaped, महौजसम् a highly vigourous one, ऋषयः ascetics, तुष्टुवुश्चैनं extolled him, देवगन्धर्वाः gods and gandharvas, प्रशंसन्तः while prasing him, जगुश्च also sang.

The sages praised him while he was coursing through the sky, the gods and gandharvas sang in praise of him extolling his majesty and vigour.
नागाश्च तुष्टुवुर्यक्षा रक्षांसि विबुधाः खगाः।

प्रेक्ष्य सर्वे कपिवरं सहसा विगतक्लमम्।।5.1.86।।


विगतक्लमम् unwearied, कपिवरम् the great monkey, प्रेक्ष्य observing, सहसा at once, नागाश्च nagas, यक्षाः yakshas, रक्षांसि rakshasas (who were protecting the southwest), विबुधाः
learned sages, खगाः birds, सर्वे all, तुष्टुवुः praised .

Observing the unwearied monkey the nagas, yakshas, the demons (protecting the southwest), the learned sages and birds praised him.
तस्मिन् प्लवगशार्दूले प्लवमाने हनूमति।

इक्ष्वाकुकुलमानार्थी चिन्तयामास सागरः।।5.1.87।।


प्लवगशार्दूले when the tiger among vanaras, तस्मिन् हनूमति when that monkeychief, प्लवमाने while leaping, सागरः the Seagod, इक्ष्वाकुकुलमानार्थी wishing the wellbeing and honour of the Ikshvaku family, चिन्तयामास started thinking.

While the monkeychief was leaping (across the sea) the Seagod wished the wellbeing of the Ikshvaku family and honoured him. (The Seagod belonged to the same race) :
साहाय्यं वानरेन्द्रस्य यदि नाहं हनूमत:।

करिष्यामि भविष्यामि सर्ववाच्यो विवक्षताम्।।5.1.88।।


अहम् I, वानरेन्द्रस्य of the chief of monkeys, हनूमतः Hanuman's, साहाय्यम् help, न करिष्यामि यदि if I do not render, विवक्षताम् by all the wise speakers, सर्ववाच्यः will be blamed, भविष्यामि I will be.

'If I fail to help the monkeychief, the wise will blame me'.
अहमिक्ष्वाकुनाथेन सगरेण विवर्धितः।

इक्ष्वाकुसचिवश्चायं नावसीदितुमर्हति।।5.1.89।।


अहम् I, इक्ष्वाकुनाथेन by the scion of the Ikshvakus, सगरेण by Sagara, विवर्धितः made to extend , इक्ष्वाकुसचिवः च and the minister of Ikshvaku race, अयम् this person, अवसीदितुम् to perish, नार्हति he shouldl not.

'I expanded on account of a scion of the Ikshvaku race (Sagara) and I should not do anything to make him (Hanuman) suffer since he is the minister helping the Ikshvaku race'.
तथा मया विधातव्यं विश्रमेत यथा कपिः।।5.1.90।।

शेषं च मयि विश्रान्तः सुखेनातिपतिष्यति।


कपिः monkey, यथा likewise, विश्रमेत he may take rest, तथा in that way, मया by myself, विधातव्यम् arrangement has to be made, मयि on me, विश्रान्तः the rest, शेषम् remaining, सुखेन comfortably, अतिपतिष्यति will leap over.

'I will have to make arrangements for his rest. Later he can resume his journey comfortably'.
इति कृत्वा मतिं साध्वींसमुद्र श्छन्नमम्भसि।।5.1.91।।

हिरण्यनाभं मैनाकमुवाच गिरिसत्तमम्।


समुद्रः the Seagod, इति thus, साध्वीं well, मतिम् in his mind, कृत्वा after resolving, अम्भसि in waters, छन्नम् hidden, हिरण्यनाभम् golden, गिरिसत्तमम् noble mountain, मैनाकम् to Mainaka, उवाच said.

Having resolved in his mind, the Seagod addressed the noble, golden mount Mainaka, hidden in the sea:
त्वमिहासुरसंघानां पातालतलवासिनाम्।।5.1.92।।

देवराज्ञा गिरिश्रेष्ठ परिघः सन्निवेशितः।


गिरिश्रेष्ठ O foremost mountain, त्वम् you, इह here, पातालतलवासिनाम् for those residing in the nether world, असुरसङ्घानाम् of hordes of demons, परिघः beam used as a barrier against the gateway, देवराज्ञा by the lord of the gods, सन्निवेशितः arranged.

'O foremost mountain you are kept here by Indra, lord of the gods as a barrier against
the intrusion of demons residing in the netherworld.
त्वमेषां जातवीर्याणां पुनरेवोत्पतिष्यताम्।।5.1.93।।

पातालस्याप्रमेयस्य द्वारमावृत्य तिष्ठसि।


जातवीर्याणाम् of the violent, एषाम् for these, पुनरेव again, उत्पतिष्यताम् prone to come up, त्वम् you, अप्रमेयस्य of the immeasurable, पातालस्य nether world's, द्वारम् entrance, आवृत्य blocking, तिष्ठसि are staying.

"You are staying at the entrance preventing the violent demons of the immeasurable nether world from jumping onto the surface.
तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधश्चैव शक्तिस्ते शैल वर्धितुम्।।5.1.94।।

तस्मात्संचोदयामि त्वामुत्तिष्ठ गिरिसत्तम।


शैल O mountain, तिर्यक् across, ऊर्ध्वम् upward, अधश्चैव and at the bottom, वर्धितुम् to grow, ते to you, शक्तिः energy, गिरिसत्तम O noble mountain, तस्मात् therefore, त्वाम् you, सञ्चोदयामि I am prompting, उत्तिष्ठ you mary rise.

"O noble mountain you have the capacity to grow across, upward and downward by your free will. I therefore prompt you to grow.
स एष कपिशार्दूलस्त्वामुपर्येति वीर्यवान्।।5.1.95।।

हनूमान्रामकार्यार्थं भीमकर्मा खमाप्लुतः।


कपिशार्दूलः a tiger among monkeys, वीर्यवान् valiant one, भीमकर्मा a performer of dreadful deeds, सः एषः that great personality, हनूमान् Hanuman, रामकार्यार्थम् on account of Rama's work, खम् in the sky, आप्लुतः flew, त्वाम् you उपरि over, एति you

"Valiant Hanuman, a tiger among monkeys and a performer of dreadful deeds, is flying over you to fulfil Rama's mission
अस्य साह्यं मया कार्यमिक्ष्वाकुकुलवर्तिनः।।5.1.96।।

मम हीक्ष्वाकवः पूज्याः परं पूज्यतमास्तव।


अस्य to him, इक्ष्वाकुकुलवर्तिनः for him who serves the Ikshvaku race, मया by me, साह्यम् help, कार्यम् should be given, मम to myself, इक्ष्वाकवः the kings of the Ikshvaku race, पूज्याः worthy of adoration, तव to you, पूज्यतमाः most adorable .

"I should help him for he is working for the welfare of the Ikshavaku family. The Ikshvaku kings are worthy of adoration to me and for you as well.
कुरु साचिव्यमस्माकं न नः कार्यमतिक्रमेत्।।5.1.97।।

कर्तव्यमकृतं कार्यं सतां मन्युमुदीरयेत्।


अस्माकम् for us, साचिव्यम् counselling (the duty of a minister), कुरु you may do, नः for us, कार्यम् task, न अतिक्रमेत् may not be lost, कर्तव्यम् our duty, कार्यम् task, अकृतम् not carried out, सताम् for pious men, मन्युम् anger, उदीरयेत् will cause.

"You may act as our minister and let us not miss this chance. Pious men lose their cool if a worthy act is left unfulfilled.
सलिलादूर्ध्वमुत्तिष्ठ तिष्ठत्वेष कपिस्त्वयि।।5.1.98।।

अस्माकमतिथिश्चैव पूज्यश्च प्लवतां वरः।


सलिलात् from the waters, ऊर्ध्वम् above, उत्तिष्ठ rise, अस्माकम् for us, अतिथिश्चैव guest also, पूज्यश्च worthy of worship also, प्लवताम् among the jumping ones, वरः noble, एषः कपिः this monkey, त्वयि on you, तिष्ठतु let him rest.

"Rise up from the waters. Let him rest on you since this noble monkey is our guest and worthy of worship.
चामीकरमहानाभ देवगन्धर्वसेवित।।5.1.99।।

हनुमांस्त्वयि विश्रान्तस्ततः शेषं गमिष्यति।


चामीकरमहानाभ O goldenpeaked one, देवगन्धर्व सेवित resorted to by gods, gandharvas, हनुमान् Hanuman, त्वयि by you, विश्रान्तः resting, ततः then, शेषम् remaing part, गमिष्यति will cover.

"O goldenpeaked mountainyou are the refuge of the gods and gandharvas. Let him also rest on you for a while before he negotiates the remaining part of the journey.
काकुत्स्थस्यानृशंस्यं च मैथिल्याश्च विवासनम्।।5.1.100।।

श्रमं च प्लवगेन्द्रस्य समीक्ष्योत्थातुमर्हसि।


काकुत्स्थस्य Rama's, अनृशंस्यं च good nature, मैथिल्याः Sita's, विवासनं च deportation, प्लवगेन्द्रस्य Hanuman's, श्रमं च strain also, समीक्ष्य considering, उत्थातुम् to rise up, अर्हसि you ought to.

"You ought to rise up if you consider the nobility of the scion of the Kakusthas, the deportation of Mythili, and the exertion put forth by Hanuman, the lord of monkeys".
हिरण्यनाभो मैनाको निशम्य लवणाम्भसः।।5.1.101।।

उत्पपात जलात्तूर्णं महाद्रुमलतायुतः।


हिरण्यनाभः mountain with gold at its bosom, मैनाकः Mainaka, लवणाम्भसः of the salty ocean, निशम्य after listening, महाद्रुमलतायुतः with great trees and creepers, तूर्णम् at once, जलात् from the water, उत्पपात rose up.

Hearing the command of the god of the ocean, mount Mainaka, rich in gold and covered with trees and creepers rose up at once from the water.
स सागरजलं भित्त्वा बभूवाभ्युत्थितस्तदा।।5.1.102।।

यथा जलधरं भित्त्वा दीप्तरश्मिर्दिवाकरः।


तदा then, सः that mountain, सागरजलम् waters of the ocean, भित्त्वा projecting, दीप्तरमशिः the lord of glowing rays, दिवाकरः Sun, जलधरम् a cloud, भित्त्वा breaking, यथा as, अभ्युत्थितः rose up, बभूव appeared.

Just as the rising Sun comes out with glowing rays tearing the veil of dark clouds, the mountain rose up from the water of the ocean.
स महात्मा मुहूर्तेन सर्वतः सलिलावृतः।।5.1.103।।

दर्शयामास शृङ्गाणि सागरेण नियोजितः।

आदित्योदयसङ्काशैरालिखद्भिरिवाम्बरम्।

शातकुम्भमयैः शृङ्गैः सकिन्नरमहोरगैः।।5.1.104।।


सकिन्नरमहोरगैः with nagas and kinnaras, आदित्योदयसङ्काशैः resembling the rising Sun, सर्वतः all over, सलिलावृत: submerged by water, अम्बरम् sky, आलिखद्भि: as if scraping the sky, इव like that, शातकुम्भमयैः golden, शृङ्गैः with peak, सर्वतः all over, सलिलावृतः covered with water, सः महात्मा the great mountain, सागरेण the ocean's, नियोजितः ordered, मुहूर्तेन in a moment, शृङ्गाणि mountain peak, दर्शयामास was seen.

At the instance of Varuna, (the presiding deity of the ocean) the lofty mountain appeared, projecting its peaks, hitherto submerged in the water. The golden peaks inhabited by nagas and kinnaras resemmbled the rising Sun as though scraping the sky in a moment.
तप्तजाम्बूनदैः शृङ्गैः पर्वतस्य समुत्थितैः।।5.1.105।।

आकाशं शस्त्रसङ्काशमभवत्काञ्चनप्रभम्।


समुत्थितैः by those risen ones, तप्तजाम्बूनदैः by barnished gold, पर्वतस्य mountain's, शृङ्गैः with peaks, शस्त्रसंकाशम् the colour of weapons, आकाशम् sky, काञ्चनप्रभम्, golden, अभवत् appeared.

The sky shone like barnished weapons smeared with the golden colour of the
mountain peaks that rose up above the water.
जातरूपमयैः शृङ्गैर्भ्राजमानैः स्वयंप्रभैः।।5.1.106।।

आदित्यशतसङ्काशः सोऽभवद्गिरिसत्तमः।


स्वयंप्रभैः the selfeffulgent ones, भ्राजमानैः glittering , जातरूपमयैः golden, शृङ्गैः by the peak, सः that, गिरिसत्तमः noble mountain, आदित्यशतसङ्काशः like a thousand Suns, अभवत् appeared.

The noble mountain, Mainaka was glittering like a thousand Suns with selfeffulgent golden peaks shining.
तमुत्थितमसङ्गेन हनुमानग्रतः स्थितम्।।5.1.107।।

मध्ये लवणतोयस्य विघ्नोऽयमिति निश्चितः।


लवणतोयस्य of the seawater, मध्ये in the midst, असङ्गेन impediment across, उत्थितम् rising up, अग्रतः in front, स्थितम् stood, तम् him, हनुमान् Hanuman, अयम् this, विघ्नः obstruction, इति thus, निश्चितः surely.

Hanuman considered the mountain rising up in the midst of the ocean and standing in front an impediment.
स तमुच्छ्र्रतमत्यर्थं महावेगो महाकपिः।।5.1.108।।

उरसा पातयामास जीमूतमिव मारुतः।


महावेगः swift in action, सः महाकपिः that great vanara, अत्यर्थम् instantly, उच्छ्रितम् risen, तम् him, मारुतः the wind, जीमूतमिव like a cloud, उरसा with the chest, पातयामास pushed it down.

The great vanara,who was swift in action felled down the mountain that had risen high instantly with his chest just as the wind would strike a cloud.
स तथा पातितस्तेन कपिना पर्वतोत्तमः।।5.1.109।।

बुद्ध्वा तस्य कपेर्वेगं जहर्ष च ननन्द च।


तेन कपिना by that vanara, तथा in that way, पातितः felled down, स पर्वतोत्तमः that high mountain, तस्य कपेः by the vanara's, वेगम् speed, बुद्ध्वा after realising, जहर्ष च felt happy, ननन्द च and roared in high pitch.

Felled by the vanara's speed, the tall mountain overwhelmed with joy roared in high pitch.
तमाकाशगतं वीरमाकाशे समुपस्थितः।।5.1.110।।

प्रीतो हृष्टमाना वाक्यमब्रवीत्पर्वतः कपिम्।

मानुषं धारयन् रूपमात्मनः शिखरे स्थितः।।5.1.111।।


पर्वतः mountain, प्रीतः feeling happy, हृष्टमानाः gladly, मानुषम् human, रूपम् form, धारयन् assuming, आत्मनः his, शिखरे on the summit, स्थितः standing, आकाशगतम् gone to the aerial region, तं वीरं कपिम् that heroic vanara, आकाशे in the sky, समुपस्थितः stood, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Now the mountain assumed a human form and standing on its own summit, which stood very high, and glad at heart, addressed the heroic vanara gone to the aerial region.
दुष्करं कृतवान्कर्म त्वमिदं वानरोत्तम।

निपत्य मम शृङ्गेषु विश्रमस्व यथासुखम्।।5.1.112।।


वानरोत्तम O best of the vanaras, त्वम् you, दुष्करम् formidable, इदम् this, कर्म deed, कृतवान् accomplished, मम my, शृङ्गेषु on this peak, निपत्य alighting, यथासुखम् comfortably, विश्रमस्व you may rest.

"O best of vanaras you have achieved a formidable deed. Alighting on my peak and
comfortably resting awhile, you may resume your journey.
राघवस्य कुले जातैरुदधिः परिवर्धितः।

स त्वां रामहिते युक्तं प्रत्यर्चयति सागरः।।5.1.113।।


उदधिः the ocean, राघवस्य of Raghava's, कुले in the family, जातैः by those born, परिवर्धितः is extended, सः सागरः that Sagara, रामहिते for the service of Rama, युक्तम् endowed with, त्वाम् you, प्रत्यर्चयति honour in return.

"The son of Rama's family, Sagara, has extended the ocean in the past.It is most appropriate that he (the god of the sea) honours you in return as you have set out in the service of Rama.
कृते च प्रतिकर्तव्यमेष धर्मः सनातनः।

सोऽयं त्वत्प्रतिकारार्थी त्वत्तः सम्मानमर्हति।।5.1.114।।


कृते when help is rendered, प्रतिकर्तव्यम् it should be repaid, एषः this, सनातनः eternal, धर्मः dharma, तत्प्रतिकारार्थी for doing service in return, सः अयम् this, त्वत्तः from you, सम्मानम् honour, अर्हति he deserves.

त्वन्निमित्तमनेनाहं बहुमानात्प्रचोदितः।

तिष्ठ त्वं कपिशार्दूल मयि विश्रम्य गम्यताम्।।5.1.115।।

तव सानुषु विश्रान्तः शेषं प्रक्रमतामिति।

योजनानां शतं चापि कपिरेष समाप्लुतः।।5.1.116।।


योजनानां शतम् a hundred yojanas, समाप्लुतः is leaping, एषः this, कपिः vanara, तव your, सानुषु
on the peaks, विश्रान्तः resting, शेषम् remaining, प्रक्रमताम proceed thereafter, इति thus, अनेन by this ocean, त्वन्निमित्तम for your sake, अहम् I, बहुमानात् with honour, प्रचोदितः prompted, कपिशार्दूल: a tiger among monkeys, त्वम् you, तिष्ठ stay, मयि at my, विश्रम्य after resting, गम्यताम् you can go.

"I was prompted by the ocean for your sake since he has great regard for you. O great monkey you may rest here for a while and continue your journey. The lord of the ocean feels that this tiger among monkeys can cover the distance of a hundred yojanas. He tells me, 'let him rest on your peak and then cover the rest of the distance'.
तदिदं गन्धवत्स्वादु कन्दमूलफलं बहु।

तदास्वाद्य हरिश्रेष्ठ विश्रान्तोऽनु गमिष्यसि।।5.1.117।।


हरिश्रेष्ठ O foremost of the monkeys, तत् इदम् such as this, गन्धवत् sweet smelling, स्वादु tasty, बहु plenty, कन्दमूलफलम् roots and fruits, इदम् this, तत् that, आस्वद्य after tasting, विश्रान्तः taking rest, अनु later, गमिष्यसि you may go.

"O foremost of the monkeys after eating plenty of sweet and tasty roots and fruits and resting a while you may go.
अस्माकमपि सम्बन्ध: कपिमुख्य त्वयास्ति वै।

प्रख्यातस्त्रिषु लोकेषु महागुणपरिग्रहः।।5.1.118।।


कपिमुख्य O chief of monkeys, त्रिषु in the three, लोकेषु in the worlds, प्रख्यातः wellknown, महागुणपरिग्रहः possesing great merits, सम्बन्धः kinship, त्वया with you, अस्माकमपि for us also, अस्ति वै is there.

"O chief of monkeys, indeed we too have a relationship with you based on merit which is wellknown to all the three worlds.
वेगवन्तः प्लवन्तो ये प्लवगा मारुतात्मज।

तेषां मुख्यतमं मन्ये त्वामहं कपिकुञ्जर।।5.1.119।।


मारुतात्मज O son of the Windgod, कपिकुञ्जर O elephant among monkeys, वेगवन्तः swift, प्लवन्तः jumping, ये those, प्लवगाः vanaras, तेषाम् of them, मुख्यतमम् the foremost, त्वाम् you, अहम् I, मन्ये believe.

"O son of the Windgod you are an elephant among monkeys, the foremost among them who move at a high speed.
अतिथिः किल पूजार्हः प्राकृतोऽपि विजानता।

धर्मं जिज्ञासमानेन किं पुनस्त्वादृशो महान्।।5.1.120।।


धर्मम् righteousness, जिज्ञासमानेन who desires to know, विजानता by a wise man, प्राकृतोऽपि even an ordinary person, अतिथिः a guest, पूजार्हः worthy of worship, त्वादृशः a person like you, महान् great, किं पुनः what again, किल it is said.

"Even a newcomer, however ordinary, deserves worship by a wise man who wishes to educate himself in the path of righteousness. Needless to say that distinguished guest like you deserves all reverence.
त्वं हि देववरिष्ठस्य मारुतस्य महात्मनः।

पुत्रस्तस्यैव वेगेन सदृशः कपिकुञ्जर।।5.1.121।।


कपिकुञ्जर foremost among vanaras, त्वम् you, देववरिष्ठस्य of the pre eminent one among the divine beings, महात्मनः of the highsouled, मारुतस्य wind god's, पुत्रः हि son indeed, वेगेन in speed, तस्यैव with his own self, सदृशः comparable.

"O foremost among the vanaras you are the son of the highsouled Windgod's, preeminent among the gods, you are also equal to him in speed.
पूजिते त्वयि धर्मज्ञ पूजां प्राप्नोति मारुतः।

तस्मात्त्वं पूजनीयो मे शृणु चाप्यत्र कारणम्।।5.1.122।।


धर्मज्ञ O knower of righteousness, त्वयि when you, पूजिते if you are worshipped, मारुतः Windgod, पूजाम् veneration, प्राप्नोति will recieve, तस्मात् therefore, त्वम् you, अपि also, मे to me, पूजनीयः worshipworthy, अत्र here, कारणं च also the cause, शृणु listen.

"O knower of righteousness to worship you is to honour the Windgod. Therefore you are worthy of worship for me. I will tell you the reason. Listen.
पूर्वं कृतयुगे तात पर्वताः पक्षिणोऽभवन्।

ते हि जग्मुर्दिशः सर्वा गरुडानिलवेगिनः।।5.1.123।।


तात O dear son, पूर्वम् formerly, कृतयुगे in Krita yuga, पर्वताः mountains,पक्षिणः had wings, अभवन् endowed, ते they, गरुडानिलवेगिनः swift like Garuda and wind, सर्वाः all, दिशः directions, जग्मुः went about.

"Formerly in Kritayuga, O dear, mountains were endowed with wings. They used to move speedily in all directions like Garuda and the Windgod.
ततस्तेषु प्रयातेषु देवसङ्घा: महर्षिभिः।

भूतानि च भयं जग्मुस्तेषां पतनशङ्कया।5.1.124।।


ततः then, तेषु when they, प्रयातेषु went about, सहर्षिभिः and sages, देवसङ्घा: hosts of gods, भूतानि च and all creatures, तेषाम् their, पतनशङ्कया out of fear of their falling down, भयम् fear, जग्मुः felt.

"When they moved about, even hosts of sages, gods and creatures panicked for fear of falling down (and destroying all worlds).
ततः क्रुद्धः सहस्राक्षः पर्वतानां शतक्रतुः।

पक्षान् चिच्छेद वज्रेण तत्र तत्र सहस्रशः।।5.1.125।।


ततः then, शतक्रतुः one who has performed a hundred yajnas, सहस्राक्षः Indra, क्रुद्धः in
anger, तत्र तत्र here and there, सहस्रशः in thousand, पर्वतानाम् of the mountains, पक्षान् wings, वज्रेण with the thunderbolt, चिच्छेद cut into pieces.

"Provoked at this, the thousandeyed Indra who had performed a hundred sacrifices cut off the wings of mountains into a thousands pieces with his thunderbolt.
स मामुपागतः क्रुद्धो वज्रमुद्यम्य देवराट्।

ततोऽहं सहसा क्षिप्तः श्वसनेन महात्मना।।5.1.126।।
 

सः he, देवराट् Indra, क्रुद्धः in wrath, वज्रम् thunderbolt, उद्यम्य held, माम् to me, उपागतः came, ततः then, अहम् I, महात्मना by the great self, श्वसनेन by the Windgod, सहसा at once, क्षिप्तः dropped down.

"Angry Indra held the thunderbolt and came towards me chasing. At that time the great Wind-god tossed me into the air and dropped me down at once.
अस्मिन्लवणतोये च प्रक्षिप्तः प्लवगोत्तम।

गुप्तपक्षसमग्रश्च तव पित्राभिरक्षितः।।5.1.127।।


प्लवगोत्तम O distinguished among the vanaras, गुप्तपक्षसमग्रश्च kept my wings intact, अस्मिन् in this, लवणतोये in the salt waters of the sea, प्रक्षिप्तः thrown down, तव पित्रा by your father, अभिरक्षितः protected.

"O distinguished vanara your father, the Windgod threw me down into this saltwater sea. Thus my wings were protected.
ततोऽहं मानयामि त्वां मान्यो हि मम मारुतः।

त्वया मे ह्येष सम्बन्धः कपिमुख्य महागुणः।।5.1.128।।


कपिमुख्य O esteemed vanara, मारुतः Windgod, मम my, मान्यः हि revered one, ततः therefore, अहम् I, त्वाम् you, मानयामि I will honour you, त्वया by you, मे to me, एषः this, सम्बन्धः relationship, महागुणः is great.

"O esteemed vanara the Windgod is revered by me and so I honour you. O chief of monkeys, my bondage with you is therefore of high value to me, indeed.
अस्मिन्नेवंगते कार्ये सागरस्य ममैव च।

प्रीतिं प्रीतमनाः कर्तुं त्वमर्हसि महाकपे।।5.1.129।।


महाकपे O great monkey, अस्मिन् in this, कार्ये work, एवंगते reached such a position, त्वम् you, प्रीतमनाः wholeheartedly, सागरस्य च and the ocean's, ममैव च and mine also, प्रीतिम् pleasure, कर्तुम् to do, अर्हसि you ought to.

"O great monkey when I hold you so high, you ought to oblige me and the (god of the) ocean wholeheartedly (and accept our hospitalty).
श्रमं मोक्षय पूजां च गृहाण कपिसत्तम।

प्रीतिं च बहुमन्यस्व प्रीतोऽस्मि तव दर्शनात्।।5.1.130।।


कपिसत्तम O noble monkey, श्रमम् fatigue, मोक्ष्य after being relieved, पूजां च and offerings, गृहाण accept, प्रीतिम् love, बहुमन्यस्व oblige us, तव your, दर्शनात् by your presence, प्रीतः अस्मि I am pleased.

"O noble monkey oblige us by accepting our offering given with love and be relieved of your fatigue. Your presence itself is welcome to me".
एवमुक्तः कपिश्रेष्ठस्तं नगोत्तममब्रवीत्।

प्रीतोऽस्मि कृतमातिथ्यं मन्युरेषोऽपनीयताम्।।5.1.131।।


एवम् in that way, उक्तः having addressed, कपिश्रेष्ठः the great monkey, तं नगोत्तमम् to the lord of mountains, अब्रवीत् said, प्रीतः pleased, अस्मि I am, आतिथ्यम् hospitality, कृतम् is offered, एषः this, मन्युः unhappiness, अपनीयताम् remove.

The great Hanuman, pleased with the words of Mainaka, said "I am pleased at your
hospitality. Remove your unhappiness.
त्वरते कार्यकालो मे अहश्चाप्यतिवर्तते।

प्रतिज्ञा च मया दत्ता न स्थातव्यमिहान्तरे।।5.1.132।।


मे to me, कार्यकालः schedule, त्वरते hastens, अहः च the day also, अतिवर्तते exceeds, मया by me, प्रतिज्ञा vow, दत्ता च is made, अन्तरे in between, इह here, न स्थातव्यम् I will not halt.

"My commitment is hastening me. The day set (for the accomplishment of the task) is also drawing to a close. A vow is made and I will not halt in the middle of my work."
इत्युक्त्वा पाणिना शैलमालभ्य हरिपुङ्गवः।

जगामाकाशमाविश्य वीर्यवान् प्रहसन्निव।।5.1.133।।


वीर्यवान् heroic, हरिपुङ्गवः chief of monkeys, इति thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, शैलम् the mountain, पाणिना with his hand, आलभ्य gently touching, आकाशम् to the sky, आविश्य ascended, प्रहसन्निव with a smile on his face, जगाम departed.

Having said this, the mighty monkey gently touched the mountain with his hands before ascending to the sky with a smile on his face.
स पर्वतसमुद्राभ्यां बहुमानादवेक्षितः।

पूजितश्चोपपन्नाभिराशीर्भिरनिलात्मजः।।5.1.134।।


सः he, अनिलात्मजः son of the Windgod, पर्वतसमुद्राभ्याम् by both the mountain and ocean, बहुमानात् with great respect, आवेक्षितः was adored, उपपन्नाभिः with proper ones, आशीर्भिः with blessings, पूजितः च also honoured.

The mountain and the sea honoured and adored the son of the Windgod and gave him appropriate blessings.
अथोर्ध्वं दूरमुत्प्लुत्य हित्वा शैलमहार्णवौ।

पितुः पन्थानमास्थाय जगाम विमलेऽम्बरे।।5.1.135।।


अथ then, शैलमहार्णवौ the mountain and the ocean, हित्वा after leaving, ऊर्ध्वम् high, दूरम् long distance, उत्प्लुत्य leaping into, विमले in the clear, अम्बरे in sky, पितुः father's, पन्थानम् the path, आस्थाय after taking, जगाम went.

And thereafter leaping a long distance into the clear sky, he (Hanuman) took the path of the Windgod, his father, leaving behind the mountain and the sea.
भूयश्चोर्ध्वं गतिं प्राप्य गिरिं तमवलोकयन्।

वायुसूनुर्निरालम्बे जगाम विमलेऽम्बरे।।5.1.136।।


वायुसूनुः son of the Windgod, भूयः च further, ऊर्ध्वम् high up, गतिम् path, प्राप्य taking, तं गिरिम् the mountain, अवलोकयन् while looking at, निरालम्बे in a place without any support, विमले pure, cloudless, अम्बरे in the sky, जगाम went.

Rising higher and further up and looking at the mountain (which was going down into the ocean), the son of the Windgod coursed through the cloudless sky unsupported.
तद् द्वितीयं हनुमतो दृष्ट्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्।

प्रशशंसुः सुराः सर्वे सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः।।5.1.137।।


हनुमतः of Hanuman, तत् that, सुदुष्करम् most difficult, द्वितीयम् a second, कर्म task, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, सर्वे all, सुराः gods, सिद्धाश्च siddhas, परमर्षयः great sages, प्रशंशसुः praised him.

Gods, siddhas as well as the great sages praised him for the second great achievment of Hanuman, which is impossible for others to accomplish.
देवताश्चाभवन् हृष्टास्तत्रस्थास्तस्य कर्मणा।

काञ्चनस्य सुनाभस्य सहस्राक्षश्च वासवः।।5.1.138।।


तत्रस्थाः those who were there, देवताश्च gods, सहस्राक्षः the thousandeyed, वासवश्च Indra, काञ्चनस्य of the golden Mainaka, तस्य his, सुनाभस्य of Sunabha, कर्मणा by the task, हृष्टाः delighted, अभवन् became.

The gods who happened to be present at that time (on the mountain) and the thousandeyed Indra were delighted by the gesture of golden Sunabha (Mainaka) mountain.
उवाच वचनं धीमान् परितोषात्सगद्गदम्।

सुनाभं पर्वतश्रेष्ठं स्वयमेव शचीपतिः।।5.1.139।।


धीमान् wise, शचीपतिः husband of Sachi, Indra, पर्वतश्रेष्ठम् best mountain, सुनाभम् Sunabha, परितोषात् satisfied, सगद्गदम् with throat choked, स्वयमेव himself, वचनम् these words, उवाच spoke.

Indra, the lord of Sachi, was personally satisfied and spoke to Mainaka, the best of mountains, in faltering tone, his throat choked out of joy.
हिरण्यनाभ शैलेन्द्र परितुष्टोऽस्मि ते भृशम्।

अभयं ते प्रयच्छामि तिष्ठ सौम्य यथासुखम्।।5.1.140।।


हिरण्यनाभ O Hiranyanabha, शैलेन्द्र O lord of mountains, ते with you, भृशम् a lot, परितुष्टः अस्मि I am pleased, सौम्य O pious one, ते to you, अभयम् security, प्रयच्छामि I give, यथासुखम् happily as you please, तिष्ठ you may stay on.

"O Hiranyanabha, the foremost among the mountains I am highly pleased with you. I give you security (free from fear of losing wings). O pious one you may stay on happily as you please.
साह्यं कृतं ते सुमहद्विक्रान्तस्य हनूमतः।

क्रमतो योजनशतं निर्भयस्य भये सति।।5.1.141।।


विक्रान्तस्य of one attempting to leap, योजनशतम् a hundred yojanas, क्रमतः while leaping, भये सति when there is reason to fear, निर्भयस्य of a fearless one, हनूमतः Hanuman, ते by you, सुमहत् very valuable, साह्यम् help, कृतम् rendered.

"You have rendered very valuable help to Hanuman who was attempting to leap a distance of a hundred yojanas. He is fearless even when there is reason to fear (of falling down).
रामस्यैष हितायैव याति दाशरथेर्हरिः।

सत्क्रियां कुर्वता तस्य तोषितोऽस्मि दृढं त्वया।।5.1.142।।


एषः हरिः this vanara, दाशरथेः of the son of Dasaratha, रामस्य Rama's, पितायैव for his wellbeing only, याति going, तस्य his, सत्क्रियाम् honour, कुर्वता for doing, त्वया by you, दृढम् surely, तोषितः अस्मि I am pleased.

"The vanara has gone on a mission to help the son of Dasaratha. I am highly pleased with the service rendered to him.
ततः प्रहर्षमगमद्विपुलं पर्वतोत्तमः।

देवतानां पतिं दृष्ट्वा परितुष्टं शतक्रतुम्।।5.1.143।।


तत: thereafter, पर्वतोत्तमः the best of mountains, देवतानाम् of gods,पतिम् lord, शतक्रतुम् who had performed a hundred yajnas, Indra, परितुष्टम् extremely happy,दृष्ट्वा after seeing, विपुलम् very much, प्रहर्षम् delight, आगमत् experienced.

Thereafter Mainaka, the great mountain was delighted to see Indra, lord of the gods, performer of a hundred yajnas satisfied.
स वै दत्तवरः शैलो बभूवावस्थितस्तदा।

हनुमांश्च मुहूर्तेन व्यतिचक्राम सागरम्।।5.1.144।।


तदा then, दत्तवरः who received a boon, सः he, शैलः Mainaka, अवस्थितः he became stable, बभूव became, हनुमांश्च Hanuma also, मुहूर्तेन in a short while, सागरम् ocean, व्यतिचक्राम crossed over.

Then mount Mainaka, assured by Indra became secure. And Hanuman also crossed over the ocean in a short while.
ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः।

अब्रुवन् सूर्यसङ्काशां सुरसां नागमातरम्।।5.1.145।।


ततः then, सगन्धर्वाः including gandharvas, देवाः gods, सिद्धाश्च and siddhas, परमर्षयः great sages, सूर्यसङ्काशाम् shining like the Sun, नागमातरम् mother of nagas, सुरसाम् Surasa, अब्रुवन् said.

Then the gods, gandharvas, siddhas and great sages approached Surasa, the mother of nagas, who was glowing like the Sungod and said:.
अयं वातात्मजः श्रीमान्प्लवते सागरोपरि।

हनुमान्नाम तस्य त्वं मुहूर्तं विघ्नमाचर।।5.1.146।।

राक्षसं रूपमास्थाय सुघोरं पर्वतोपमम्।

दंष्ट्राकरालं पिङ्गाक्षं वक्त्रं कृत्वा नभः समम्।।5.1.147।।


हनुमन्नाम named Hanuman, श्रीमान् glorious, अयं this person, वातात्मजः son of the Windgod, सागरोपरि over the sea, प्लवते is flying, त्वम् you, सुघोरम् hideous, पर्वतोपमम् gigantic like a mountain, राक्षसम् demoniac, रूपम् form, आस्थाय assuming, दंष्ट्राकरालम् with big teeth, पिङ्गाक्षम् yellowbrown eyes, नभः समम् like the sky, वक्त्रम् mouth, कृत्वा doing, मुहूर्तम् for a short while, तस्य him, विघ्नम् obstruction, आचर make.

"The glorious son of the Windgod, called Hanuman, is crossing the ocean. Obstruct him for sometime by assuming the hideous form of a demon, gigantic as a mountain, fearful with yellowishbrown eyes, with big teeth and a wide mouth like the sky.
बलमिच्छामहे ज्ञातुं भूयश्चास्य पराक्रमम्।

त्वां विजेष्यत्युपायेन विषादं वा गमिष्यति।।5.1.148।।


अस्य his, बलम् strength, भूयः once again, पराक्रमं च and valour, उपायेन intelligence त्वाम् you, विजेष्यति he will win, वा or else, विषादम् dejected, गमिष्यति will give way, ज्ञातुम् to know, इच्छामहे we wish.

"We want to assess his strength, valour and intelligence once again. We wish to know whether he will win or give way to despondency".
एवमुक्ता तु सा देवी दैवतैरभिसत्कृता।

समुद्रमध्ये सुरसा बिभ्रती राक्षसं वपुः।।5.1.149।।

विकृतं च विरूपं च सर्वस्य च भयावहम्।

प्लवमानं हनूमन्तमावृत्येदमुवाच ह।।5.1.150।।


देवी the divine being, सा सुरसा Surasa, दैवतैः by gods, एवम् that way, उक्ता having been addressed, अभिसत्कृता received their honour, समुद्र मध्ये in the midst of the ocean, विकृतम् terrific, विरूपं च ugly form, सर्वस्य for all, भयावहम् frightening, राक्षसं वपुः demoniac form, बिभ्रती put up, प्लवमानम् leaping, हनूमन्तम् Hanuman, आवृत्य after encirding him, इदम् these words, उवाच ह said.

Thus honoured by the gods, Surasa assumed a terrific ugly form frightening to all and stood in the midst of the ocean. Putting up a distorted appearance and encompassing Hanuman who was crossing the ocean, she spoke to him:
मम भक्षः प्रदिष्टस्त्वमीश्वरैर्वानरर्षभ।

अहं त्वां भक्षयिष्यामि प्रविशेदं ममाननम्।।5.1.151।।


वानरर्षभ O bull among, त्वम् you, ईश्वरैः by lords of the universe, मम to me, भक्षः food, प्रदिष्टः are provided, अहम् I, त्वाम् you, भक्षयिष्यामि I will eat you, इदम् this, मम my, आननम्
mouth, प्रविश enter.

"O bull among vanaras the lords of the universe have provided you as food for me. I will eat you. Enter my mouth".
एवमुक्तः सुरसया प्राञ्जलिर्वानरर्षभः।

प्रहृष्टवदनः श्रीमानिदं वचनमब्रवीत्।।5.1.152।।


सुरसया by Surasa,एवम् In that way, उक्तः spoken, श्रीमान् glorious, वानरर्षभः वहतत bull among vanaras, प्रहृष्टवदनः with a blooming face, प्राञ्जलिः with folded hands, इदं वचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Thus addressed by Surasa, the glorious Hanuman said this with a blooming face and folded hands:
रामो दाशरथिर्नाम प्रविष्टो दण्डकावनम्।

लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा वैदेह्या चापि भार्यया।।5.1.153।।


दाशरथिः Dasaratha's son, रामो नाम called Rama, भ्रात्रा with his brother, लक्ष्मणेन सह accompanied by Lakshmana, भार्यया with his wife, वैदेह्या चापि with Vaidehi also, दण्डकावनम् Dandaka forest, प्रविष्टः entered.

"Dasaratha's son called Rama accompanied by his brother Lakshmana and his wife Vaidehi entered Dandaka forest.
अन्यकार्यविषक्तस्य बद्धवैरस्य राक्षसैः।

तस्य सीता हृता भार्या रावणेन यशस्विनी।।5.1.154।।


राक्षसैः with rakshasas, बद्धवैरस्य deeprooted enmity, तस्य his, अन्यकार्यविषक्तस्य while he was engaged in some other work, यशस्विनी a glorious lady, भार्या wife, सीता Sita, रावणेन by Ravana, हृता was abducted.

"While Rama was engaged otherwise, his glorious wife Sita was abducted by Ravana actuated by deeprooted enmity of demons with him.
तस्याः सकाशं दूतोऽहं गमिष्ये रामशासनात्।

कर्तुमर्हसि रामस्य साह्यं विषयवासिनि।।5.1.155।।


अहम् I, रामशासनात् by Rama's command, दूतः emissary, तस्याः her, सकाशम् for, गमिष्ये I shall go, विषयवासिनि O resident of his kingdom, रामस्य of Rama, साह्यम् help, कर्तुम् to render, अर्हसि it proper for you.

"I am going as Rama's emissary to search for his wife. It is proper for you to render help since you are a resident of his kingdom.
अथवा मैथिलीं दृष्ट्वा रामं चाक्लिष्टकारिणम्।

आगमिष्यामि ते वक्त्रं सत्यं प्रतिशृणोमि ते।।5.1.156।।


अथवा alternatively, मैथिलीम् Mythili, अक्लिष्टकारिणम् one who may makes work easy (without any trouble), रामं च and Rama, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, ते to your, वक्त्रम् mouth, आगमिष्यामि I will reach, सत्यम् truly, ते you, प्रतिशृणोमि I promise.

एवमुक्ता हनुमता सुरसा कामरूपिणी।

अब्रवीन्नातिवर्तेन्मां कश्चिदेष वरो मम।।5.1.157।।


हनुमता by Hanuman, एवम् in that way, उक्ता having been spoken, कामरूपिणी one who can assume any form at free will, सुरसा Surasa, अब्रवीत् said, कश्चित् no one, नातिवर्तेत cannot cross, एषः such, मम to me, वरः boon.

Having heard Hanuman, Surasa capable of taking any form at her free will told him that no one can cross (her region) as she had been given such a boon(by the
Creator)৷৷
तं प्रयान्तं समुद्वीक्ष्य सुरसा वाक्यमब्रवीत्।

बलं जिज्ञासमाना वै नागमाता हनूमतः।।5.1.158।।


नागमाता mother of serpents, सुरसा Surasa, हनूमतः of Hanuman, बलम् strength, जिज्ञासमाना वै desirous of knowing, प्रयान्तम् who was attempting to go away, तम् her, समुद्वीक्ष्य observing, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Surasa, mother of serpents, observing that Hanuman was attempting to escape, said this in order to gauge his strength:
प्रविश्य वदनं मेऽद्य गन्तव्यं वानरोत्तम।

वर एष पुरा दत्तो मम धात्रेति सत्वरा।।5.1.159।।

व्यादाय विपुलं वक्त्रं स्थिता सा मारुतेः पुरः।


वानरोत्तम O best of the vanaras, अद्य today, मे my, वदनम् face (mouth), प्रविश्य after entering, गन्तव्यम् you may go, एषः वरः such a boon, पुरा past, मम to me, धात्रा by Brahma, दत्तः is given, इति thus, सत्वरा quickly, विपुलम् wide, वक्त्रम् mouth, व्यादाय opened, सा she, मारुतेः vanara's, पुरः front, स्थिता stood.

"O best vanara you must pass through my mouth today. Such is the boon granted to me by Brahma in the past". Then she quickly opened her big mouth and stood.
एवमुक्तः सुरसया क्रुद्धो वानरपुङ्गवः।।5.1.160।।

अब्रवीत्कुरु वै वक्त्रं येन मां विषहिष्यसे।


सुरसया by Surasa, एवम् in that way, उक्तः having been spoken to, वानरपुङ्गवः supreme vanara, क्रुद्धः got angry, अब्रवीत् he said, वक्त्रम् mouth, कुरु वै open, येन in such a way, माम् me, विषहिष्यसे you can bear me.

Thus addressed by Surasa, Hanuman the supreme vanara said, "Open your mouth wide enough to hold me."
इत्युक्त्वा सुरसां क्रुद्धो धशयोजनमायता।।5.1.161।।

दशयोजनविस्तारो बभूव हनुमांस्तदा।


तदा then, हनुमान् Hanuman, सुरसां Surasa, इति thus, उक्त्वा having said, क्रुद्धः angry, दशयोजनम् ten yojanas, आयतां wide, दशयोजनविस्तारः ten yojanas in breadth, बभूव became.

Provoked by the words of Surasa, Hanuman stretched himself to ten yojanas.
तं दृष्ट्वा मेघसङ्काशं दशयोजनमायतम्।।5.1.162।।

चकार सुरसा चास्यं विंशद्योजनमायतम्।


दशयोजनम् ten yojanas, आयतम् wide, मेघसङ्काशम् like a cloud, तम् him, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, सुरसा च Surasa too, आस्यम् her mouth, विंशद्योजनम् twenty yojanas, आयतम् wide, चकार stretched.

Seeing his body stretched to ten yojanas like a cloud, Surasa also widened her mouth to twenty yojanas.
हनुमांस्तु ततः क्रुद्धस्त्रिंशद्योजनमायतः।।5.1.163।।

चकार सुरसा वक्त्रं चत्वारिंशत्तथोच्छ्रितम्।

बभूव हनुमावनीरः पञ्चाशद्योजनोच्छ्रितः।।5.1.164।।


ततः then, हनुमांस्तु Hanuman also, क्रुद्धः in anger, त्रिंशद्योजनम् thirty yojanas, आयतः wide, सुरसा Surasa, तथा like that, वक्त्रम् mouth, चत्वारिंशम् forty yojanas, उच्छ्रितम् high, चकार did, वीरः hero, हनुमान् Hanuman, पञ्चाशद्योजनोच्छ्रितः fifty yojanas high, बभूव became.

Provoked, Hanuman further stretched his body to thirty yojanas and Surasa on her own enlarged her mouth to forty yojanas. Then the great hero Hanuman stretched his
body to fifty yojanas.
चकार सुरसा वक्त्रं षष्टियोजनमायतम्।

तथैव हनुमावनीरः सप्ततीयोजनोच्छ्रितः।।5.1.165।।


सुरसा Surasa, वक्त्रम् mouth, षष्टियोजनम् sixty yojanas, आयतम् wide, चकार did, वीरः heroic, हनुमान् Hanuman, तथैव in the same way, सप्ततीयोजनोच्छ्रितः increased to seventy yojanas.

Surasa widened her mouth sixty yojanas and then the heroic Hanuman enlarged himself to seventy yojanas.
चकार सुरसा वक्त्रमशीतीयोजनायतम्।

हनुमानचलप्रख्यो नवतीयोजनोच्छ्रितः।।5.1.166।।


सुरसा Surasa, वक्त्रम् mouth, अशीतीयोजनायतम् eighty yojanas wide, चकार made, अचलप्रख्यः like a mountain, हनुमान् Hanuman, नवतीयोजनोच्छ्रितः ninety yojanas.

Surasa widened her mouth to eighy yojanas and the heroic Hanuman grew up to ninety yojanas, looking like a mountain.
चकार सुरसा वक्त्रं शतयोजनमायतम्

तव सानुषु विश्रान्तः शेषं प्रक्रमतामिति।

तद्दृष्ट्वा व्यादितं त्वास्यं वायुपुत्रः सुबुद्धिमान्।

दीर्घजिह्वं सुरसया सुघोरं नरकोपमम्।।5.1.167।।

सुसंक्षिप्यात्मनः कायं बभूवाङ्गुष्ठमात्रकः।


सुबुद्धिमान् very intelligent, वायुपुत्रः Hanuman, सुरसया by Surasa, व्यादितम् opened, दीर्घजिह्वम् long tongued, सुघोरम् dreadful, नरकोपमम् like hell, तत् आस्यम् that mouth,
दृष्ट्वा on seeing, आत्मनः his, कायम् body, सुसंक्षिप्य shrunk, अङ्गुष्ठमात्रकः of the size of a thumb, बभूव became.

Intelligent Hanuman observing Surasa's enlarged mouth open and dreadful like hell with a long tongue, suddenly shrunk his body to the size of a thumb.
सोऽभिपत्याशु तद्वक्त्रं निष्पत्य च महाबलः।

अन्तरिक्षे स्थितः श्रीमानिदं वचनमब्रवीत्।।5.1.168।।


श्रीमान् glorious one, महाबलः mighty, सः he, आशु immediatly, तद्वक्त्रम् her mouth, अभिपत्य got in, निष्पत्य च and got out, अन्तरिक्षे in the sky, स्थितः stood, इदम् this, वचनम् word, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Glorious and mighty Hanuman quickly went into her mouth and got out and stood in the sky and said:.
प्रविष्टोऽस्मि हि ते वक्त्रं दाक्षायणि नमोऽस्तु ते।

गमिष्ये यत्र वैदेही सत्यं चासीद्वरस्तव।।5.1.169।।


दाक्षायणि O dughter of Daksha, ते your, वक्त्रम् mouth, प्रविष्टः I have entered, अस्मि हि I am indeed, ते to you, नमः salutations, अस्तु may be, वैदेही Vaidhehi, यत्र wherever, गमिष्ये I will go, तव your, वरः च boon also, सत्यम् true, आसीत् was.

"O Dakshayani I have indeed entered your mouth and your boon has come true (as nobody can go against the boon of the Creator). Allow me to proceed in quest of Vaidhehi. My salutations to you."
तं दृष्ट्वा वदनान्मुक्तं चन्द्रं राहुमुखादिव।

अब्रवीत्सुरसा देवी स्वेन रूपेण वानरम्।।5.1.170।।


राहुमुखात् from the mouth of Rahu, चन्द्रमिव like the Moon, वदनात् from the mouth, मुक्तम् released, तं him, वानरम् that vanara, दृष्ट्वा seeing, सुरसा देवी the divine Surasa, स्वेन in
her true, रूपेण form, अब्रवीत् said.

Seeing Hanuman released out of her mouth like the Moon released from the mouth of Rahu, Surasa assumed her true form and said:
अर्थसिद्ध्यै हरिश्रेष्ठ गच्छ सौम्य यथासुखम्।

समानयस्व वैदेहीं राघवेण महात्मना।।5.1.171।।


सौम्य O noble one, हरिश्रेष्ठ O best of vanaras, अर्थसिद्ध्यै for achieving your purpose, यथासुखम् with pleasure, गच्छ proceed, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, महात्मना with the great self, राघवेण with Raghava, समानयस्व unite.

"O noble vanara proceed happily to achieve your purpose. Go and unite Vaidehi with the noble self, Raghava.
तत्तृतीयं हनुमतो दृष्ट्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्।

साधु साध्विति भूतानि प्रशशंसुस्तदा हरिम्।।5.1.172।।


सुदुष्करम् very difficult, हनुमतः of Hanuman, तत् that, तृतीयं कर्म a third feat, दृष्ट्वा after witnessing, तदा then, भूतानि living beings, साधु साधु इति welldone, welldone this, हरिम् vanara, प्रशशंसुः applauded.

Witnessing Hanuman achieving a very difficult feat for the third time, all the living beings applauded him saying "Well done, welldone".
स सागरमनाधृष्यमभ्येत्य वरुणालयम्।

जगामाकाशमाविश्य वेगेन गरुडोपमः।।5.1.173।।


वेगेन speedily, गरुडोपमः like Garuda, सः he, अनाधृष्यम् invincible, वरुणालयम् abode of varuna, सागरम् ocean, अभ्येत्य piercing through, आकाशम् sky, आविश्य coursing, जगाम went.

Rising above the invincible ocean, the abode of lord Varuna, Hanuman coursed through the sky speedily like Garuda.
सेविते वारिधाराभिः पतगैश्च निषेविते।

चरिते कैशिकाचार्यैरैरावतनिषेविते।।5.1.174।।

सिंहकुञ्जरशार्दूलपतगोरगवाहनैः।

विमानैः सम्पतद्भिश्च विमलैः समलङ्कृते।।5.1.175।।

वज्राशनिसमाघातैः पावकैरुपशोभिते।

कृतपुण्यैर्महाभागैः स्वर्गजिद्भिरलङ्कृते।।5.1.176।।

वहता हव्यमत्यर्धं सेविते चित्रभानुना।

ग्रहनक्षत्रचन्द्रार्कतारागण विभूषिते।।5.1.177।।

महर्षिगणगन्धर्वनागयक्षसमाकुले।

विविक्ते विमले विश्वे विश्वावसुनिषेविते।।5.1.178।।

देवराजगजाक्रान्ते चन्द्रसूर्यपथे शिवे।

विताने जीवलोकस्य वितते ब्रह्मनिर्मिते।।5.1.179।।

बहुशः सेविते वीरैर्विद्याधरगणैर्वरैः।

जगाम वायुमार्गे तु गरुत्मानिव मारुतिः।।5.1.180।।


वारिधाराभिः with clouds that release torrents, सेविते frequented by, पतगैश्च by birds, निषेविते inhabited by, कैशिकाचार्यैः by masters (Tumburu, Narada and Gandharvas) of music and dance (Kaisikaart and science of music), चरिते traversed by, ऐरावतनिषेविते attended by elephant Airabata (of Indra), सिंहकुञ्जरशार्दूलपतगोरगवाहनैः with aerial vehicles drawn by
lions, elephants, tigers, birds and serpents, सम्पतद्भि: driven by, विमलैः by clear, विमानैः by aerial vehicles, समलङ्कृते well decorated, वज्राशनिसमाघातैः by the god of fire who strike fiercely like a thunderbolt, पावकैः by fires, उपशोभिते looking splendid, कृतपुण्यैः by those who have performed meritorious deeds, महाभागैः by accomplished people, स्वर्गजिद्भि: by those who conquered heaven, अलङ्कृते decorated, अत्यर्थम् greatly, हव्यम् havis,वहता carrying, चित्रभानुना by fire, सेविते attended by, ग्रहनक्षत्रचन्द्रार्कतारागणविभूषिते adorned with planets, Moon, Sun and stars constellations, महर्षिगणगन्धर्व नागयक्षसमाकुले filled with groups of eminent sages gandharvas, nagas, yakshas, विविक्ते isolated region, विमले cloudless, विश्वे by vishva, विश्वावसुनिषेविते inhabited by Vishvavasu, देवराजगजाक्रान्ते sporting ground for the elephant of Indra, चन्द्रसूर्यपथे in the path of Moon and Sun, शिवे an auspicious place, जीवलोकस्य for the living beings, ब्रह्मनिर्मिते created by Brahma, वितते extensive, विताने canopy, वरैः by the esteemed, वीरैः by heroes, विद्याधरगणैः by Vidyadhara groups, बहुशः frequently, सेविते attended by, वायुमार्गे the path of wind, मारुतिः Hanuman, गरुत्मानिव like Garuda, जगाम went.

Hanuman passed through the path of wind like Garuda. The region was refreshed with clouds that released torrents of rain and frequented by birds. The great masters of music (Tumburu, Narada and Gandharvas) trained in Kasika moved there driven by lions, elephants, tigers, birds and serpents and were moving in different aerial vehicles. It was splendid with god at fire who strikes fiercely like thunderbolt. It was inhabited by great sages who had acquired merit. The region was traversed by firegod who carried havis in large quantities earnestly. It was decorated with planets, constellations, Moon, Sun and clusters of stars. It was filled with groups of greal sages, gandharvas, nagas and yakshas. It was isolated part of the universe traversed by the king of gandharvas like Vishvavasu. It was an auspicious path for Moon and Sun, a sporting ground for Airavata, the vehicle of lord Indra. It was an extensive world of living beings created by Brahma. It was frequented by many heroes ascending to heaven and blocked by vidyadharas.
प्रदृश्यमानः सर्वत्रः हनुमान्मारुतात्मजः।

भेजेऽम्बरं निरालम्बं लम्बपक्ष इवाद्रिराट्।।5.1.181।।


सर्वत्र all over, प्रदृश्यमानः he appeared, मारुतात्मजः son of Windgod, हनुमान् Hanuman, लम्बपक्षः longwinged, अद्रिराट् इव like king of mountains, निरालम्बम् unsupported, अम्बरम् the sky, भेजे occupied.

Hanuman, son of the Windgod was seen everywhere in the sky. He appeared like a
longwinged king of mountains unsupported.
प्लवमानं तु तं दृष्ट्वा सिंहिका नाम राक्षसी।

मनसा चिन्तयामास प्रवृद्धा कामरूपिणी।।5.1.182।।


कामरूपिणी who can take any form at will, सिंहिका नाम called Simhika, राक्षसी demoness, प्लवमानम् him who was speeding in the sky, तम् him, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, प्रवृद्धा expanded in size, चिन्तयामास started thinking.

Seeing Hanuman speeding in the sky a demoness called Simhika who can assume any form at her will had grown out of proportion and thought on her part:
अद्य दीर्घस्य कालस्य भविष्याम्यहमाशिता।

इदं हि मे महत्सत्त्वं चिरस्य वशमागतम्।।5.1.183।।


चिरस्य after a long time, इदम् this, महत् great, सत्त्वम् being, मे my, वशम् fold, आगतम् has come, दीर्घस्य after a long, कालस्य time, अद्य today, अहम् I, आशिता satiated, भविष्यामि I will be.

इति सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा छायामस्य समाक्षिपत्।

छायायां गृह्यमाणायां चिन्तयामास वानरः।।5.1.184।।


इति thus, मनसा in her mind, सञ्चिन्त्य after thinking, अस्य his, छायाम् shadow, समाक्षिपत् pulled, छायायाम् when his shadow, गृह्यमाणायाम् was held, वानरः vanara, चिन्तयामास deliberated.

Thinking thus, she dragged him by his shadow before she took hold of him, Hanuman started deliberating within.
समाक्षिप्तोऽस्मि सहसा पङ्गूकृतपराक्रमः।

प्रतिलोमेन वातेन महानौरिव सागरे।।5.1.185।।


सागरे in the ocean, प्रतिलोमेन from the opposite side, वातेन by the wind, महानौरिव like a huge ship, पङ्गूकृतपराक्रमः powerless, सहसा suddenly, समाक्षिप्तः caught, अस्मि I am.

"I am caught suddenly. I am handicapped.I am like a huge ship in an ocean retarded by the wind blowing from the opposite direction.
तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधश्चैव वीक्षमाणस्ततः कपिः।

ददर्श स महत्सत्त्वमुत्थितं लवणाम्भसि।।5.1.186।।


ततः then, कपिः monkey, तिर्यक् horizontally, ऊर्द्वम् upward, अथश्चैव at the bottom level, वीक्षमाणः while looking at, लवणाम्भसि in the salt sea, उत्थितम् risen up, महत् huge, सत्त्वम् being, ददर्श saw.

Looking around, right and left, up and down, the monkey saw a huge being rise from the salty sea.
तद्धृष्ट्वा चिन्तयामास मारुतिर्विकृताननम्।

कपिराजेन कथितं सत्त्वमद्भुतदर्शनम्।।5.1.187।।

छायाग्राहि महावीर्यं तदिदं नात्र संशयः।


मारुतिः Maruti, विकृताननम् hideous countenance, तत् that creature, दृष्ट्वा seeing, चिन्तयामास reflected, कपिराजेन by the king of monkeys, कथितम् described, अद्भुतदर्शनम् of wonderful appearance, छायाग्राहि which can hold the shadow, महावीर्यम् very powerful, तत् that, सत्त्वम् creature, इदम् this, अत्र here it is, संशयः doubt, न no.

Seeing the form with a hideous countenance, Hanuman reflected about the creature of ugly appearance endowed with power which can catch a creature though his shadow, about which king Sugriva had once told him. 'It is the same creature, no doubt', said
Hanuman.
स तां बुद्ध्वार्थतत्त्वेन सिंहिकां मतिमान्कपिः।।5.1.188।।

व्यवर्धत महाकायः प्रावृषीव वलाहकः।


मतिमान् wise one, सः कपिः Hanuman, ताम् her, अर्थतत्त्वेन by her true nature, सिंहिकाम् Simhika, बुद्ध्वा recognising, महाकायः huge bodied one, प्रावृषि in rainy season, वलाहकः इव like a cloud, व्यवर्धत grew.

Recognising the true nature of Simhika the clutcher of shadows, the wise Hanuman grew to a huge size like a cloud in rainy season.
तस्य सा कायमुद्वीक्ष्य वर्धमानं महाकपेः।।5.1.189।।

वक्त्रं प्रसारयामास पातालान्तरसन्निभम्।


सा she, तस्य महाकपेः Hanuman's, कायम् body, वर्धमानम् growing, उद्वीक्ष्य after observing, पातालान्तरसन्निभम् like the depth of the underworld, वक्त्रम् mouth, प्रसारयामास distended.

Observing the body of Hanuman growing in size, Simhika started distending her mouth wide like the depth of the underworld.
घनराजीव गर्जन्ती वानरं समभिद्रवत्।।5.1.190।।

स ददर्श ततस्तस्या विवृतं सुमहन्मुखम्।

कायमात्रं च मेधावी मर्माणि च महाकपिः।।5.1.191।।


घनराजीव like a mass of heavy clouds, गर्जन्ती roaring, वानरम् that vanara, समभिद्रवत् ran towards him, ततः then, मेधावी intelligent, महाकपिः Hanuman, तस्याः her, विवृतम् opened, कायमात्रम् body alone, सुमहत् enormous, मुखम् mouth, मर्माणि च vatal parts, सः he, ददर्श saw.

Roaring like a heavy mass of clouds, Simhika chased Hanuman. Intelligent Hanuman
observed her enormous mouth and noticed her vital parts.
स तस्या विवृते वक्त्रे वज्रसंहननः कपिः।

संक्षिप्य मुहुरात्मानं निष्पपात महाबलः।।5.1.192।।


महाबलः strong one, वज्रसंहननः of thunderboltlike physique, सः कपिः that vanara, आत्मानम् himself, मुहुः once again, संक्षिप्य contracted, तस्याः her, विवृते open, वक्त्रे in the mouth, निष्पपात entered.

Hanuman, the vanara whose physique was as hard as thunderbolt suddenly contracted once again and entered her opened mouth.
आस्ये तस्या निमज्जन्तं ददृशुः सिद्धचारणाः।

ग्रस्यमानं यथा चन्द्रं पूर्णं पर्वणि राहुणा।।5.1.193।।


सिद्धचारणाः siddhas and charanas, तस्याः her, आस्ये in the mouth, निमज्जन्तम् drowning in, पर्वणि on fullmoon day, राहुणा by Rahu, ग्रस्यमानम् being seized, पूर्णम् full, चन्द्रं यथा like the Moon, ददृशुः saw.

The siddhas and charanas who were watching his performance of drowning in her mouth were amazed as though the moon is seized by Rahu on a fullmoon night.
ततस्तस्या नखैस्तीक्ष्णैर्मर्माण्युत्कृत्य वानरः।

उत्पपाताथ वेगेन मनः सम्पातविक्रमः।।5.1.194।।


ततः thay, वानरः vanara, तीक्ष्णैः with sharp, नखैः with nails, तस्याः her, मर्माणि private vital parts, उत्कृत्य after tearing, अथ then, मनः सम्पातविक्रमः with the speed of mind in action, वेगेन quickly, उत्पपात rushed out.

The vanara who had the speed of mind tore her vital parts with his sharp nails and rushed out quickly before she closed her mouth.
तां तु दृष्ट्वा च धृत्या च दाक्षिण्येन निपात्य च।

स कपिप्रवरो वेगाद्ववृधे पुनरात्मवान्।।5.1.195।।


आत्मवान् selfcontrolled, सः he, कपिप्रवरः great monkey, ताम् her, दृष्ट्वा च after seeing, धृत्या च with firmness of mind, दाक्षिण्येन with ingenuity, निपात्य thrown down, पुनः again, वेगात् rapidly, ववृधे grew in size.

Selfcontrolled Hanuman, the great monkey acting with firmness of mind and ingenuity threw her down and once again rapidly grew in size.
हृतहृत्सा हनुमतापपात विधुराम्भसि।

तां हतां वानरेणाशु पतितां वीक्ष्य सिंहिकाम्।।5.1.196।।

भूतान्याकाशचारीणि तमूचुः प्लवगोत्तमम्।


सा that, हनुमता by Hanuman, हृतहृत् heart torn, विधुरा miserable, अम्भसि into water, पपात fell down, वानरेण by vanara, आशु instantly, हताम् killed, पतिताम् dropped, वीक्ष्य seeing, आकाशाचारीणि moving in the sky, भूतानि beings, तम् him, प्लवगोत्तमम् best of vanaras, ऊचुः addressed.

Heart torn asunder and killed by Hanuman, miserable Simhika instantly fell into the sea water. Observing it, the beings who ranged the sky said to the foremost of vanaras:
भीममद्य कृतं कर्म महत्सत्त्वं त्वया हतम्।।5.1.197।।

साधयार्थमभिप्रेतमरिष्टं प्लवतां वर।


प्लवतां वर O great jumper, अद्य to day, त्वया by you, महत् great, सत्त्वम् creature, हतम् is destroyed, भीमम् fierce, कर्म action, कृतम् done, अभिप्रेतम् intention, अर्थम् aim, अरिष्टम् unobstructed, साधय you fulfill

"O great jumper a great deed has been done by you today in killing that fierce
creature. O great monkey fulfil your mission without any obstruction.
यस्य त्वेतानि चत्वारि वानरेन्द्र यथा तव।।5.1.198।।

धृतिर्दृष्टिर्मतिर्दाक्ष्यं सः कर्मसु न सीदति।


वानरेन्द्र O lord of vanara, यस्य in whom, धृतिः fortitude, दृष्टिः vision, मतिः intelligence, दाक्ष्यम् dexterity, एतानि these, चत्वारि four, तव यथा as in you, स: he, कर्मसु in missions, न सीदति will not get lost.

"O lord of vanaras he in whom these four qualities, fortitude, vision, intelligence and dexterity exist as in you will achieve his mission and not get lost".
स तैः सम्भावितः पूज्यः प्रतिपन्नप्रयोजनः।।5.1.199।।

जगामाकाशमाविश्य पन्नगाशनवत्कपिः।


पूज्यः a venerable one, सः कपिः that monkey, तैः by them, सम्भावितः honoured, प्रतिपन्नप्रयोजनः achieved the objective, आकाशम् sky, आविश्य having ascended, पन्नगाशानवत् like Garuda, जगाम went.

Honoured by them the venerable monkey went ascending into the sky like Garuda to achieve the objective.
प्राप्तभूयिष्ठपारस्तु सर्वतः प्रतिलोकयन्।।5.1.200।।

योजनानां शतस्यान्ते वनराजिं ददर्श सः।


प्राप्तभूयिष्ठपारः on reaching the other side of the shore, सर्वतः all over, प्रतिलोकयन् looked around, योजनानाम् of yojanas, शतस्य of a hundred, अन्ते at the end of, वनराजिम् rows of forest trees, ददर्श saw.

On reaching the other side of the shore crossing a hundred yojanas, he saw rows of forest trees.
ददर्श च पतन्नेव विविधद्रुमभूषितम्।।5.1.201।।

द्वीपं शाखामृगश्रेष्ठो मलयोपवनानि च।


शाखामृगश्रेष्ठः best among the animals that jump on branches, monkeys, पतन्नेन onwhile yet on air, विविधद्रुमभूषितम् adorned with several kinds of beautiful trees, द्वीपम् island, मलयोपवनानि gardens bordering Malaya mountain, ददर्श च also saw.

Hanuman, the best among jumpers, even while in air he saw an island adorned with many trees, also gardens adjacent to Malaya mountain.
सागरं सागरानूपं सागरानूपजान् द्रुमान्।।5.1.202।।

सागरस्य च पत्नीनां मुख्यान्यपि विलोकयन्।

स महामेघसङ्काशं समीक्ष्यात्मानमात्मवान्।।5.1.203।।

निरुन्धन्तमिवाकाशं चकार मतिमान् मतिम्।


आत्मवान् selfcontrolled, मतिमान् wise, सः he, सागरम् sea, सागरानूपम् marshy track bordering the sea, सागरानूपजान् grown in the region, द्रुमान् trees, सागरस्य ocean's, पत्नीनाम् consorts, मुखान्यपि च mouths also, विलोकयन् while looking at, महामेघसङ्काशम् like a huge cloud, आकाशम् sky, निरुन्धन्तमिव as if obstructing, आत्मानम् his own body, समीक्ष्य after observing, मतिम् चकार thought.

Looking at the ocean, he observed the sea bordering the land and the trees grown on the marshy land in the region of the mouths of the rivers (the consorts of the sea.). Looking at his own body which was like a huge cloud as though obstructing the sky, the wise monkey of selfcontrol thought as follows.
कायवृद्धिं प्रवेगं च मम दृष्ट्वैव राक्षसाः।।5.1.204।।

मयि कौतूहलं कुर्यरिति मेने महाकपिः।


मम my, कायवृद्धिम् increasing size of the body, प्रवेगं च and speed, दृष्ट्वैव after seeing,
राक्षसाः demons, मयि at me, कौतूहलम् inquisitive, कुर्युः will have, इति this, महाकपिः great monkey, मेने felt.

'The demons will be inquisitive to know about me seeing the extraordinary size of my body as well as my speed', thought the great monkey.
ततः शरीरं संक्षिप्य तन्महीधरसन्निभम्।।5.1.205।।

पुनः प्रकृतिमापेदे वीतमोह इवात्मवान्।


ततः then, तत् that, महीधरसन्निभम् like a huge mountain, तत् that, शरीरम् body, संक्षिप्य having contracted, वीतमोहः giving up ignorance, आत्मवानिव like a sage, पुनः once again, प्रकृतिम् natural size, आपेदे assumed.

Then Hanuman contracted his huge mountainlike body and assumed his normal form, just as a sage who gives up ignorance on awakening .
तद्रूपमतिसंक्षिप्य हनुमान् प्रकृतौ स्थितः।।5.1.206।।

त्रीन् क्रमानिव विक्रम्य बलिवीर्यहरो हरिः।


हनुमान् Hanuman, तत् that, रूपम् form, अतिसंक्षिप्य contracting to very small size, बलिवीर्यहरः just as Hari took small form to defeat king Bali, हरिः Lord Visnu, त्रीन् three, क्रमान् strides, विक्रम्य इव overpowering the valour, प्रकृतौ his original form, स्थितः stood.

Hanuman returned to his normal form contracting to his small size, just like Lord Visnu returned to his original form after taking three strides and defeating the valour of king Bali.
स चारुनानाविधरूपधारी परं समासाद्य समुद्रतीरम्।

परैरशक्यः प्रतिपन्नरूपः समीक्षितात्मा समवेक्षितार्धः।।5.1.207।।


चारुनानाविधरूपधारी who can take diffrent lovely forms, परैः by others, अशक्यः not possible, सः he, परम् opposite side, समुद्रतीरम् sea shore, समासाद्य after reaching, समीक्षितात्मा
gazing at his own self, प्रतिपन्नरूपः assumed a form suitable for the purpose, समवेक्षितार्थः considered.

He reached the opposite shore of the sea. He had achieved the impossible. One who could assume a variety of lovely forum, he, gazing at his own body, deliberated on the future course of action.
ततः स लम्बस्य गिरेः समृद्धे विचित्रकूटे निपपात कूटे ।

सकेतकोद्दालकनालिकेरे महाद्रिकूटप्रतिमो महात्मा।।5.1.208।।


ततः then, महाद्रिकूटप्रतिमः top of the huge Trikuta mountain, सः he, महात्मा great self, लम्बस्य गिरेः on the mountain called Lamba, विचित्रकूटे on a mountain with wonderful, समृद्धे rich, सकेतकोद्दालकनालिकेरे in Kethaka Uddalaka, Panasa and Coconut trees, प्रतिमो descended, निपपात landed कूटे peak

Then the highsouled Hanuman, who resembled a huge mountain, descended on the peak of the huge mountain Trikuta, called Lamba, which was wonderful with kethaka flowers, uddalaka and coconut trees.
ततस्तु सम्प्राप्य समुद्रतीरं समीक्ष्य लङ्कां गिरिवर्यमूर्ध्नि।

कपिस्तु तस्निन्निपपात पर्वते विधूय रूपं व्यथयन्मृगद्विजान्।।5.1.209।।


ततः then, कपिः तु vanara also, समुद्रतीरम् to sea shore, सम्प्राप्य after reaching, गिरिवर्यमूर्ध्नि located on the mountain peak, लङ्काम् Lanka, समीक्ष्य having observed, रूपम् form, विधूय shook, मृगद्विजान् beasts and birds, व्यथयन् scared, तस्मिन् on that, पर्वते on the mountain, निपपात landed.

Reaching the sea shore, beholding Lanka located on the peak of Trikuta, Hanuman shook his body, scaring the beasts and birds and landed on the mountain.
स सागरं दानवपन्नगायुतं बलेन विक्रम्य महोर्मिमालिनम्।

निपत्य तीरे च महोदधेस्तदा ददर्श लङ्काममरावतीमिव।।5.1.210।।


सः he, दानवपन्नगायुतम् filled with demons and serpents, महोर्मिमालिनम् of garland of high waves, सागरम् ocean, बलेन by his process, विक्रम्य having crossed, महोदधेः the great ocean, तीरे on the shore, निपत्य having landed, तदा then, अमरावतीमिव resembling Amaravati, लङ्काम् Lanka, ददर्श he saw.

Landing on the shore after crossing by his prowess the great ocean filled with demons, and serpents, adorned with garlands of waves, Hanuman beheld Lanka which was like Amaravati, the capital of Indra.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे प्रथमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the first sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
