[Hanuman courses through the path of the Charanas -- crosses the ocean -- reaches Lanka]

tatō rāvaṇanītāyāḥ sītāyāḥ śatrukarśanaḥ.

iyēṣa padamanvēṣṭuṅ cāraṇācaritē pathi৷৷5.1.1৷৷


tataḥ then, śatrukarśanaḥ crusher off enemies, rāvaṇanītāyāḥ carried by Ravana, sītāyāḥ Sita's, padam whereabouts, anvēṣṭum to search, cāraṇācaritē where charanas the celestial bards move, pathi way, iyēṣa resolved .

Hanuman, crusher of enemies resolved to find the whereabouts of Sita, carried away by Ravana. He followed the path of the Charanas, celestial bards.
duṣkaraṅ niṣpratidvandvaṅ cikīrṣan karma vānaraḥ.

samudagraśirōgrīvō gavāṅpatirivābabhau৷৷5.1.2৷৷


vānaraḥ vanara, duṣkaram formidable, niṣpratidvandvam which could not be challenged, cikīrṣan intending to (cross), samudagraśirōgrīvaḥ raised his head and neck, gavāṅ patiḥ iva like the best of bulls, babhau appeared.

Hanuman who raised his head and neck, intending to cross the formidable ocean which none else could accomplish, looked like a leading bull.
atha vaiḍūryavarṇēṣu śādvalēṣu mahābalaḥ.

dhīraḥ salilakalpēṣu vicacāra yathāsukham৷৷5.1.3৷৷


atha then, mahābalaḥ mighty, dhīraḥ calm, vaiḍūryavarṇēṣu of the colour of vaidurya (tawny), salilakalpēṣu on the sheet of water (marshy land with green grass that looked like sheet of water), śādvalēṣu on green grassy lands, yathāsukham very easily, vicacāra strdled.

Tawny-hued Hanuman, gifted with extraordinary strength and patience happily strolled on the marshy tracts of grassy land which had the colour of vaidurya.
dvijān vitrāsayan dhīmānurasā pādapān haran.

mṛgāṅśca subahūnnighnan pravṛddha iva kēsarī৷৷5.1.4৷৷


dhīmān wise, dvijān birds, vitrāsayan scaring, urasā with his chest, pādapān trees, haran uprooting, pravṛddhaḥ grown, kēsarī iva like a lion, subahūn groups, mṛgāṅśca animals also, nighnan trampling.

Wise Hanuman went about like a lion scaring away birds, uprooting trees with his chest, and trampling many animals.
nīlalōhitamāṅjiṣṭhapatravarṇaiḥ sitāsitaiḥ.

svabhāvavihitaiścitrairdhātubhiḥ samalaṅkṛtam৷৷5.1.5৷৷

kāmarūpibhirāviṣṭamabhīkṣṇaṅ saparicchadaiḥ.

yakṣakinnaragandharvairdēvakalpaiśca pannagaiḥ৷৷5.1.6৷৷


nīlalōhitamāṅjiṣṭhapatravarṇaiḥ blue, red, yellow and green coloured, sitāsitaiḥ as well as with white and black colours, svabhāvavihitaiḥ in their natural state, citraiḥ by wonderful ones, dhātubhiḥ with minerals, samalaṅkṛtam decorated all over, kāmarūpibhiḥ by those who take any form at free will, saparicchadaiḥ all surrounded by their retinue, yakṣakinnaragandharvaiḥ by yakshas, kinneras and gandharvas,abhīkṣṇam very much, āviṣṭam occupied, rdēvakalpaiśca resembling gods, pannagaiḥ by nagas.

The mountain was as though decorated with mineral rocks of varied colours like blue, red, yellow and green as well as black and white৷৷It was frequently visited by yakshas, kinneras, gandharvas and nagas surrounded by their retinue, capable of assuming any form at their free will rivalling gods and nagas in splendour.
sa tasya girivaryasya talē nāgavarāyutē.

tiṣṭhan kapivarastatra hradē nāga ivābabhau৷৷5.1.7৷৷


saḥ that, kapivaraḥ leader of monkeys, tatra there, nāgavarāyutē with lordly elephants, tasya girivaryasya at the great mountain, talē foot, tiṣṭhan stood, hradē centre, nāgaḥ iva like elephant, ababhau looked.

As the monkey leader stood at the foot of the great mountain filled with lordly elephants he looked like an elephant standing at the centre of a pond.
sa sūryāya mahēndrāya pavanāya svayaṅbhuvē.

bhūtēbhyaścāñjaliṅ kṛtvā cakāra gamanē matim৷৷5.1.8৷৷


saḥ that, sūryāya to the Sun, mahēndrāya to Mahendra, lord of the gods, pavanāya to the wind- god, svayaṅbhuvē to the creator, Brahma, bhūtēbhyaḥ the attendants of lord Siva añjalim salutations with folded palms, kṛtvā offered, gamanē to go, matim resolution, cakāra he made.

Offering salutations with folded palms to the Sun-god, to Mahendra, lord of the gods, to the wind-god, to the Creator Brahma and to all the attendants of lord Siva, made up his mind to proceed (to Lanka).
añjaliṅ prāṅmukhaḥ kṛtvā pavanāyātmayōnayē.

tatō hi vavṛdhē gantuṅ dakṣiṇō dakṣiṇāṅ diśam৷৷5.1.9৷৷


prāṅmukhaḥ facing the east, ātmayōnayē his father, pavanāya wind-god, añjalim salutations with folded palms, kṛtvā having offered, tataḥ then, dakṣiṇa with equanimity, dakṣiṇāṅ diśam southern direction, gantum to depart, vavṛdhē hi grew in size.

Hanuman, endowed with great equanimity, facing the east and joining his palms by way of salutaion to the Wind-god, his father, he enlarged his size and turned south in order to depart.
plavaṅgapravarairdṛṣṭaḥ plavanē kṛtaniścayaḥ.

vavṛdhē rāmavṛddhyarthaṅ samudra iva parvasu৷৷5.1.10৷৷


plavaṅgapravaraiḥ the monkey troops, dṛṣṭaḥ were gazing, plavanē taking leap, kṛtaniścayaḥ resolved, parvasu during the full-moon days, samudraḥ iva like the sea, rāmavṛddhyartham for the welfare of Rama, vavṛdhē began to grow in size.

Having made up his mind to leap for the cause of Rama, Hanuman began to grow in size just as the sea grows during the full-moon and new-moon days, while the monkey troops were watching.
niṣpramāṇaśarīraḥ san lilaṅghayiṣurarṇavam.

bāhubhyāṅ pīḍayāmāsa caraṇābhyāṅ ca parvatam৷৷5.1.11৷৷


arṇavam ocean, lilaṅghayiṣuḥ one wishing to cross over, niṣpramāṇaśarīraḥ having an immeasurable figure, san while being, bāhubhyām with both his arms, caraṇābhyāṅ ca and with feet, parvatam mountain, pīḍayāmāsa pressed.

Having swollen to an immeasurable figure, he pressed on the mountain with his feet and hands in an attempt to cross the ocean.
sa cacālācalaścāpi muhūrtaṅ kapipīḍitaḥ.

tarūṇāṅ puṣpitāgrāṇāṅ sarvaṅ puṣpamaśātayat৷৷5.1.12৷৷


kapipīḍitaḥ pressed firmly by Hanuman, saḥ acalaścāpi that mountain also, muhūrtam for a moment, cacāla was shaken, puṣpitāgrāṇām flowers on the top, tarūṇām of trees, sarvam all, puṣpam flowers, aśātayat dropped down.

Pressed firmly by Hanuman, the mountain was shaken for a moment which caused the flowers to drop down from the tree tops.
tēna pādapamuktēna puṣpaughēṇa sugandhinā.

sarvataḥ saṅvṛtaḥ śailō babhau puṣpamayō yathā৷৷5.1.13৷৷


śailaḥ the mountain, pādapamuktēna by those dropped down from the trees, sugandhinā full of fragrance, puṣpaughēṇa heap of flowers, sarvataḥ all over, saṅvṛtaḥ covered, yathā like, babhau appeared, puṣpamaya: made of flowers.

With heaps of flowers full of fragrance fallen down from the trees all over the mountain, it looked as though it was a mountain of flowers.
tēna cōttamavīryēṇa pīḍyamānaḥ sa parvataḥ.

salilaṅ samprasusrāva madaṅ matta iva dvipaḥ৷৷5.1.14৷৷


uttamavīryēṇa by the highly valiant self, tēna by him, pīḍyamānaḥ pressed very hard, saḥ parvataḥ that mountain, mattaḥ intoxicated, dvipaḥ elephant, madam iva like the rut, salilam the water, samprasusrāva exuded profusely.

The mountain pressed hard under the feet of the valiant (Hanuman), discharged streams of water just as an elephant in rut would exude water of intoxication.
pīḍyamānastu balinā mahēndrastēna parvataḥ.

rītīrnirvartayāmāsa kāñcanāñjanarājatīḥ৷৷5.1.15৷৷


balinā by the powerful, tēna by him, pīḍyamānaḥ having pressed, mahēndraḥ parvataḥ mount Mahendra, kāñcanāñcanarājatīḥ of gold and silver, rītīḥ streams, nirvartayāmāsa started forming.

Pressed by the powerful Hanuman, mount Mahendra let out streams of the hue of gold and silver (containing the ores of these minerals)৷৷
mumōca ca śilāḥ śailō viśālāḥ samanaḥśilāḥ.

madhyamēnārciṣā juṣṭā dhūmarājīrivānalaḥ৷৷5.1.16৷৷


śailaḥ mountain, madhyamēna in the midst, arciṣā by the flame, juṣṭā:possed with, analaḥ fire, dhūmarājīriva like the columns of smoke, samanaḥ śilāḥ along with sulphur pigments, viśālāḥ big one, śilāḥ boulders, mumōca threw out, ca even.

The mountain threw down big boulders along with sulphur just like fire emits columns of smoke, surrounded by flames.
giriṇā pīḍyamānēna pīḍyamānāni sarvataḥ.

guhāviṣṭāni bhūtāni vinēdurvikṛtaiḥ svaraiḥ৷৷5.1.17৷৷


guhāviṣṭāni of the caves, bhūtāni creatures, pīḍyamānēna being pressed, giriṇā by the mountain, sarvataḥ all over, pīḍyamānāni on account of pressing, vikṛtaiḥ with horrible, svaraiḥ voices, vinēduḥ shrieked.

Squeezed on all sides of the mountain by Hanuman, all creatures living in the caves shrieked making horrible sounds .
sa mahāsattvasannādaḥ śailapīḍānimittajaḥ.

pṛthivīṅ pūrayāmāsa diśaścōpavanāni ca৷৷5.1.18৷৷


śailapīḍānimittajaḥ caused by the crushing of the mountain, saḥ that, mahāsattvasannādaḥ loud noise of various creatures, pṛthivīm the earth, diśaśca all directions, upavanāni ca and the surrounding groves, pūrayāmāsa filled.

Due to the crushing of the mountain, a loud noise of the various creatures shot up filling the earth in all directions and groves around.
śirōbhiḥ pṛthubhiḥ sarpā vyaktasvastikalakṣaṇaiḥ.

vamantaḥ pāvakaṅ ghōraṅ dadaṅśurdaśanaiḥ śilāḥ৷৷5.1.19৷৷


sarpāḥ snakes, vyaktasvastikalakṣaṇaiḥ with signs of swastika marks, pṛthubhiḥ by wide ones, śirōbhiḥ with hoods, ghōram terrible, pāvakam fire, vamantaḥ poured out, daśanaiḥ with fangs, śilāḥ dadaṅśuḥ bit the rocks.

The snakes spread out their broad hoods manifesting swastika marks on them and bit the rocks with their fangs pouring out terrible fire.
tāstadā saviṣairdaṣṭāḥ kupitaistairmahāśilāḥ.

jajjvaluḥ pāvakōddīptā bibhiduśca sahasradhā৷৷5.1.20৷৷


tadā then, saviṣaiḥ by the venomous, kupitaiḥ by the angry, taiḥ by them, daṣṭāḥ bitten, tāḥ mahāśilāḥ the huge rocks, pāvakōdadīptāḥ burnt by the flame, jajvaluḥ burnt, sahasradhā in a thousand pieces, bibhiduśca and broke.

Bitten by the venomous and angry snakes, the mountain was broken into a thousand pieces by the blazing flames.
yāni cauṣadhajālāni tasmin jātāni parvatē.

viṣaghnānyapi nāgānāṅ na śēkuḥ śamituṅ viṣam৷৷5.1.21৷৷


tasmin parvatē on that mountain, jātāni grown, yāni those, auṣathajālāni medicinal herbs, viṣaghnānyapi even those which can counteract poison, nāgānām of the snakes, viṣam poison, śamitum to neutralize, na śēkuḥ were not able to.

Even the medicinal herbs grown on the mountain could not neutralize the effect of the poison of snakes.
bhidyatē.yaṅ girirbhūtairiti mattvā tapasvinaḥ.

trastā vidyādharāstasmādutpētuḥ strī gaṇaiḥ saha৷৷5.1.22৷৷

pānabhūmigataṅ hitvā haimamāsavabhājanam.

pātrāṇi ca mahārhāṇi karakāṅśca hiraṇmayān৷৷5.1.23.

lēhyānuccāvacān bhakṣyān māṅsāni vividhāni ca.

ārṣabhāṇi ca carmāṇi khaḍagāṅśca kanakatsarūn৷৷5.1.24৷৷


ayam this, giriḥ mountain, bhūtaiḥ by creatures, bhidyatē broken, iti thus, mattvā after, tapasvinaḥ ascetics, utpētuḥ jumped up, vidyādharāḥ Vidyadharas, trastāḥ terrified, pānabhūmigatam from the drinking places, haimam golden, āsavabhājanam drinking cups, mahārhāṇi valuable ones, karakāṅśca goblets, uccāvacān various big and small ones, lēhyān food that is licked, bhakṣyān eatables, vividhāni of many kinds, māṅsāni meat, ārṣabhāṇi of oxen, carmāṇi animal hides, kanakatsarūn covered with golden sheaths, khaḍagāṅśca swords, hitvā after, strīgaṇaiḥ saha along with groups of women, tasmāt from that place, utpētuḥ flew away.

Even the ascetics left the place approaching that the mountain would be broken into pieces by creatures. The alarmed vidyadharas leaped into the sky along with groups of their women, leaving behind golden jugs of wine as well as precious utensils, big and small sizes, and golden goblets, cups in the drinking place, as well as many tasty eatables like licking food, chewing food and many types of meat. They also left bull-hides and swords with golden sheaths.
kṛtakaṇṭhaguṇāḥ kṣībā raktamālyānulēpanāḥ.

raktākṣāḥ puṣkarākṣāśca gaganaṅ pratipēdirē৷৷5.1.25৷৷


kṛtakaṇṭhaguṇāḥ wearing chains, kṣībāḥ intoxicated ones, raktamālyānulēpanāḥ wearing garlands and smearing with red unguents (sandalpaste), raktākṣāḥ with red eyes, puṣkarākṣāśca with lotus like eyes, gaganam to the sky, pratipēdirē flew into the sky.

The intoxicated vidyadharas with eyes red like lotuses, wearing garlands around the neck and smeared with red sandalpaste flew into the sky.
hāranūpurakēyūrapārihāryadharāḥ striyaḥ.

vismitāḥ sasmitāstasthurākāśē ramaṇaiḥ saha৷৷5.1.26৷৷


hāranūpurakēyūrapārihāryadharāḥ wearing necklaces, anklets and armlets, striyaḥ women, vismitāḥ wonder-struck, sasmitāḥ gently smiling, ramaṇaiḥ saha with their lovers, ākāśē in the sky, tasthuḥ stayed.

Adorned with necklaces, anklets and armlets, the vidyadharis stayed wonder-struck in the sky, smiling gently in the company of their lovers.
darśayantō mahāvidyāṅ vidyādharamaharṣayaḥ.

sahitāstasthurākāśē vīkṣāñcakruśca parvatam৷৷5.1.27৷৷


vidyādharamaharṣayaḥ the seers among vidyadharas, mahāvidyām proficient in different fields of knowledge, darśayantaḥ watching, sahitāḥ collectively, ākāśē in the sky, tasthuḥ stayed, parvatam mountain, vīkṣāṅcakruśca were also watching.

The seers among the Vidyadharas, proficient in different fields of knowledge were also watching the mountain from the sky along with others.
śuśruvuśca tadā śabdamṛṣīṇāṅ bhāvitātmanām.

cāraṇānāṅ ca siddhānāṅ sthitānāṅ vimalē.mbarē৷৷5.1.28৷৷


tadā then, vimalē in a pure, ambarē in the sky, sthitānām of those stationed, cāraṇānām of charanas, siddhānām of siddhas, bhāvitātmanām of highly, ṛṣīṇāṅ ca and of seers, śabdam sound, śuśruvuḥ heard.

Then the vidyadharas heard the words of praise(of Hanuman) by the sages, seekers of the ultimate truth, the charanas and the siddhas who stood and watched in the clear sky:
ēṣa parvatasaṅkāśō hanumān mārutātmajaḥ.

titīrṣati mahāvēgassamudraṅ makarālayam৷৷5.1.29৷৷


parvatasaṅkāśaḥ resembling a mountain, mārutātmajaḥ son of the wind-god (Hanuman), mahāvēgaḥ swift, ēṣaḥ him, hanumān Hanuman, makarālayam abode of crocodiles, samudram ocean, titīrṣati desiring to cross.

"Hanuman the son of the Wind-god, who is like a mountain, with extraordinary might intends to cross the ocean, the abode of crocodiles".
rāmārthaṅ vānarārthaṅ ca cikīrṣan karma duṣkaram.

samudrasya paraṅ pāraṅ duṣprāpaṅ prāptumicchati৷৷5.1.30৷৷


rāmārtham for the purpose of Rama, vānarārthaṅ ca for the sake of vanaras also, duṣkaram impossible, karma task, cikīrṣan desirous of achieving, samudrasya of the ocean, duṣprāpam difficult to reach, paraṅ pāram the other side, prāptum to reach, icchati he wishes.

"For the sake of Rama and the vanaras he wants to reach the other shore of the ocean, which is difficult, and indeed impossible".
iti vidyādharāḥ śrutvā vacastēṣāṅ mahātmanām.

tamapramēyaṅ dadṛśuḥ parvatē vānararṣabham৷৷5.1.31৷৷


vidyādharāḥ vidyadharas, iti thus, mahātmanām of great sages, tēṣām of them, vacaḥ word, śrutvā having heard, parvatē on the mountain, apramēyam beyond measure, vānararṣabham bull among the vanaras, Hanuman, tam him, dadṛśuḥ saw.

The vidyadharas heard the sages speaking in that manner on the mountain. They beheld Hanuman, the bull among vanaras, whose strength was beyond measure.
dudhuvē ca sa rōmāṇi cakampē cācalōpamaḥ.

nanāda sumahānādaṅ sumahāniva tōyadaḥ৷৷5.1.32৷৷


acalōpamaḥ huge as mountain, saḥ he, rōmāṇi hair, dudhuvē shook, cakampē ca and moved, sumahān great, tōyadaḥ iva like a cloud, sumahānādam huge sound, nanāda produced.

Hanuman, huge as a mountain moved his body and shook the hair on his body, thundering like a cloud.
ānupūrvyēṇa vṛttaṅ ca lāṅgūlaṅ lōmabhiścitam.

utpatiṣyan vicikṣēpa pakṣirāja ivōragam৷৷5.1.33৷৷


utpatiṣyan ready to take off, ānupūrvyēṇa in an order, vṛttam covered, lōmabhiḥ with hair, citam full of, lāṅgūlam tail, pakṣirājaḥ king of birds, uragaṅ iva like a serpent, vicikṣēpa shook, cast down.

Like the king of birds Garuda would shake a serpent, he shook his tail covered with hair in order to take off.
tasya lāṅgūlamāviddhamāttavēgasya pṛṣṭhataḥ.

dadṛśē garuḍēnēva hriyamāṇō mahōragaḥ৷৷5.1.34৷৷


āttavēgasya of great, tasya his, pṛṣṭhataḥ at the back, aviddham curled, lāṅgūlam tail, garuḍēna by Garuda, hriyamāṇaḥ carried off, mahōragaḥ iva like a big serpent, dadṛśē appeared.

Hanuman had the tail curled at his back which appeared like a big serpent being carried off by Garuda.
bāhū saṅstambhayāmāsa mahāparighasannibhau.

sasāda ca kapiḥ kaṭyāṅ caraṇau sañcukōca ca৷৷5.1.35৷৷


kapiḥ monkey, mahāparighasannibhau like huge iron clubs, bāhū arms, saṅstambhayāmāsa pressing down firmly , kaṭyām in the waist, sasāda crouched in, caraṇau his feet, sañcukōca ca contracted.

The monkey fixed his arms, looking like iron clubs, firmly on the mountain and
crouched his waist and contracted his feet.
saṅhṛtya ca bhujau śrīmāṅstathaiva ca śirōdharām.

tējaḥ sattvaṅ tathā vīryamāvivēśa sa vīryavān৷৷5.1.36৷৷


śrīmān glorious, vīryavān courageous, saḥ Hanuman, bhujau ca even shoulders, tathaiva ca in the same way, śirōdharām his head, saṅhṛtya after contracting, tējaḥ glow, sattvam energy, tathā so also, vīryam vigour, āvivēśa summoned up.

The glorious and courageous Hanuman his head and shoulders contracted, summoned up all his energy and vigour.
mārgamālōkayandūrādūrdhvaṅ praṇihitēkṣaṇaḥ.

rurōdha hṛdayē prāṇānākāśamavalōkayan৷৷5.1.37৷৷


ūrdhvam upward, praṇihitēkṣaṇaḥ setting his eyes up, dūrāt from a distance, mārgam direction, ālōkayan while looking at, ākāśam sky, avalōkayan looking at, prāṇān breath, hṛdayē in the chest,rurōdha restrained.

Having cast his eyes upward in order to view the distance and direction in which he had to leap, he restrained his breath in the chest while looking at the sky.
padbhyāṅ dṛḍhamavasthānaṅ kṛtvā sa kapikuñjaraḥ.

nikuñcya karṇau hanumānutpatiṣyan mahābalaḥ৷৷

vānarān vānaraśrēṣṭha idaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷5.1.38৷৷


kapikuñjaraḥ an elephant among monkeys, mahābalaḥ very strong one, vānaraśrēṣṭhaḥ best of vanaras, saḥ hanumān that Hanuman, padbhyām feet, dṛḍham firmly, avasthānam standing in that position, kṛtvā did, karṇau ears, nikuñcya contracted, utpatiṣyan while preparing to leap, vānarān vanaras, idam this, vacanam word, abravīt said.

A mighty elephant among vanaras, Hanuman holding his feet firmly and standing in that position, contracted his ears and addressed the monkeys, when he was about to leap:
yathā rāghavanirmuktaḥ śaraḥ śvasanavikramaḥ.

gacchēttadvadgamiṣyāmi laṅkāṅ rāvaṇapālitām৷৷5.1.39৷৷


rāghavanirmuktaḥ released by Raghava, śaraḥ arrow, yathā similar manner, gacchēt goes, tadvat like that, śvasanavikramaḥ with the speed of wind, rāvaṇapālitām governed by Ravana, laṅkām Lanka, gamiṣyāmi I will reach.

"Just like an arrow released by Raghava would fly, I too will proceed with the speed of the wind to reach Lanka ruled by Ravana.
na hi drakṣyāmi yadi tāṅ laṅkāyāṅ janakātmajām.

anēnaiva hi vēgēna gamiṣyāmi surālayam৷৷5.1.40৷৷


laṅkāyām in Lanka, tāṅ janakātmajām that daughter of Janaka, na hi drakṣyāmi yadi If I am not able to find, anēna with this, vēgēnaiva hi with speed indeed, surālayam abode of gods, gamiṣyāmi I will go.

"If I am not able to find the daughter of Janaka at Lanka I will go to heaven, abode of the gods, with the same speed.
yadi vā tridivē sītāṅ na drakṣyāmyakṛtaśramaḥ.

baddhvā rākṣasarājānamānayiṣyāmi rāvaṇam৷৷5.1.41৷৷


tridivē in heaven, sītām Sita, na drakṣyāmi yadi vā If I do not find, akṛtaśramaḥ in spite of all my efforts, rākṣasarājānam king of rakshasas, rāvaṇam Ravana, baddhvā bind, ānayiṣyāmi will bring.

"If I do not find Sita in heaven in spite of my efforts, I will bind that king of demons, Ravana and bring him here.
sarvathā kṛtakāryō.hamēṣyāmi saha sītayā.

ānayiṣyāmi vā laṅkāṅ samutpāṭya sarāvaṇām৷৷5.1.42৷৷


aham I, sarvathā by all means, kṛtakāryaḥ doing my duty successfully, saha sītayā along with Sita, ēṣyāmi I will come, vā or, sarāvaṇām along with Ravana, laṅkām Lanka, samutpāṭya after uprooting, ānayiṣyāmi will bring.

"I will, by all means return successful with Sita or else I will uproot Lanka along with Ravana and bring him here".
ēvamuktvā tu hanumānvānarānvānarōttamaḥ৷৷5.1.43৷৷

utpapātātha vēgēna vēgavānavicārayan.

suparṇamiva cātmānaṅ mēnē sa kapikuñjaraḥ৷৷5.1.44৷৷


vānarōttamaḥ foremost vanara, hanumān Hanuman, vānarān to vanaras, ēvam that way, uktvā having said, atha then, avicārayan without any exertion, vēgavān swift, vēgēna speedily, utpapāta leaped, saḥ he, kapikuñjaraḥ best of vanaras, elephant-like, ātmānam himself, suparṇamiva like bird Suparna (Garuda), mēnē he felt.

Having thus addressed the monkeys the foremost of vanaras,Hanuman endowed with great speed leaped without any exertion. The elephant among monkeys felt like Garuda.
samutpatati tasmiṅstu vēgāttē nagarōhiṇaḥ.

saṅhṛtya viṭapān sarvān samutpētuḥ samantataḥ৷৷5.1.45৷৷


tasmin when he, samutpatati was leaping, vēgāt swiftly, tē they, nagarōhiṇaḥ numerous trees, sarvān all the, viṭapān branches, saṅhṛtya drawing together, samantataḥ from all over, samutpētuḥ flew.

When he took off, numerous trees on the mountain drawing together the branches all over flew along with him.
sa mattakōyaṣṭimakān pādapān puṣpaśālinaḥ.

udvahannūruvēgēna jagāma vimalē.mbarē৷৷5.1.46৷৷


saḥ he, mattakōyaṣṭimakān lapwings in heat, puṣpaśālinaḥ full of flowers, pādapān trees, ūruvēgēna by the speed of his thighs, udvahan while coursing, vimalē pristine (cloudless), ambarē in the sky, jagāma went.

He swept away the lapwings in heat on the blossoms of the trees by the speed of his thighs while he coursed through the cloudless sky.
ūruvēgōddhatā vṛkṣā muhūrtaṅ kapimanvayuḥ.

prasthitaṅ dīrghamadhvānaṅ svabandhumiva bāndhavāḥ৷৷5.1.47৷৷


ūruvēgōddhatāḥ bent forward by the force of his thighs, vṛkṣāḥ trees, dīrgham long, adhvānam path, prasthitam starting, svabandhum one's kith and kin, bāndhavāḥ iva like the relatives, kapim Hanuman, muhūrtam for a while, anvayuḥ followed.

Swept away by the force of his thighs, the trees bent forward following him for a while just as relatives accompany their kith and kin on long travel.
tamūruvēgōnmathitāḥ sālāścānyē nagōttamāḥ.

anujagmurhanūmantaṅ sainyā iva mahīpatim৷৷5.1.48৷৷


ūruvēgōnmathitāḥ uprooted by the speed of thighs, sālāśca sala trees also, anyē other, nagōttamāḥ great trees, sainyāḥ troops, mahīpatim iva like the king, hanūmantam Hanuman, anujagmuḥ follow.

Uprooted by the force of Hanuman's thighs,great trees like sala followed him just like the troops follow the king.
supuṣpitāgrairbahubhiḥ pādapairanvitaḥ kapiḥ.

hanumān parvatākārō babhūvādbhutadarśanaḥ৷৷5.1.49৷৷


bahubhiḥ by many, supuṣpitāgraiḥ with blossomed tops, pādapaiḥ with trees, anvita: endowed with, kapiḥ vanaras, parvatākāraḥ mountain like, hanumān Hanuman, adbhutadarśanaḥ queer appearance, babhūva became.

With numerous trees laden with flowers following him, Hanuman who looked like a mountain, presented a queer spectable.
sāravantō.tha yē vṛkṣā nyamajjan lavaṇāmbhasi.

bhayādiva mahēndrasya parvatā varuṇālayē৷৷5.1.50৷৷


atha and then, sāravantaḥ huge, yē those, vṛkṣāḥ trees, mahēndrasya Indra's, bhayāt out of fear, parvatāḥ mountains, varuṇālayē iva like the abode of Varuna, ocean, lavaṇāmbhasi in the salt sea, nyamajjan sank.

Then the huge trees sank into the ocean of salt water even as mountains did, afraid of Indra's (thunderbolt).
sa nānākusumaiḥ kīrṇaḥ kapiḥ sāṅkurakōrakaiḥ.

śuśubhē mēghasaṅkāśaḥ khadyōtairiva parvataḥ৷৷5.1.51৷৷


sāṅkurakōrakaiḥ with sprouts and buds, nānākusumaiḥ with different kinds of flowers, kīrṇaḥ spread over, mēghasaṅkāśaḥ resembling a cloud, saḥ kapiḥ that Hanuman, khadyōtaiḥ covered with fireflies, parvataḥ iva like a mountain, śuśubhē was shining brightly.

Covered with tender sprouts and buds of different kinds of flowers Hanuman shone brightly like a flying mountain with fireflies.
vimuktāstasya vēgēna muktvā puṣpāṇi tē drumāḥ.

avaśīryanta salilē nivṛttāḥ suhṛdō yathā৷৷5.1.52৷৷


tasya his, vēgēna speed, vimuktāḥ released, tē drumāḥ those trees, puṣpāṇi flowers, muktvā having dropped, nivṛttāḥ returning, suhṛdō yathā like friends, salilē water, avaśīryanta fallen into water.

Shedding their blossoms (under his thrust) the trees dropped into the waters of the sea just like close relatives follow at the time of farewell.
laghutvēnōpapannaṅ tadvicitraṅ sāgarē.patat.

drumāṇāṅ vividhaṅ puṣpaṅ kapivāyusamīritam৷৷5.1.53৷৷

tārācitamivākāśaṅ prababhau sa mahārṇavaḥ.


laghutvēna being light, upapannam risen up, vicitram colourful, kapivāyusamīritam driven by the wind caused by the speed of Hanuman, drumāṇām of the trees, tat there, vividham various, puṣpam flowers, sāgarē in the ocean, apatat fell, mahārṇavaḥ ocean, tārācitam filled with stars, ākāśamiva like the sky, prababhau saḥ glowing.

Driven by the wind caused by Hanuman's speed a variety of flowers fell into the ocean because of their light weight and the ocean looked colourful and bright like the star-spangled sky.
puṣpaughēṇānubaddhēna nānāvarṇēna vānaraḥ.

babhau mēgha ivākāśē vidyudgaṇa vibhūṣitaḥ৷৷5.1.54৷৷


nānāvarṇēna of different colours, anubaddhēna stuck, puṣpaughēṇa by the blossoms, vānaraḥ monkey (Hanuman), ākāśē in the sky, vidyudgaṇavibhūṣitaḥ glowing like lightning, mēghaḥ iva like the cloud, babhau looked.

Covered with blossoms of different kinds and colours, Hanuman looked like a cloud brightened by lightnings in the sky.
tasya vēgasamādhūtaiḥ puṣpaistōyamadṛśyata৷৷5.1.55৷৷

tārābhirabhirāmābhiruditābhirivāmbaram.


tasya his, vēgasamādhūtaiḥ dropped by the speed, puṣpaiḥ with flowers, tōyam water, uditābhiḥ rising ones, abhirāmābhiḥ by the very enchanting, tārābhiḥ by stars, ambaramiva like the sky, adṛśyata appeared.

The sea-water looked splendid with flowers dropped by dint of his speed. It resembled the firmament spangled with enchanting stars just risen in the sky.
tasyāmbaragatau bāhū dadṛśātē prasāritau৷৷5.1.56৷৷

parvatāgrādviniṣkrāntau pañcāsyāviva pannagau.


prasāritau stretched out, ambaragatau spread in the sky, tasya his, bāhū two arms, parvatāgrāt from the top of the mountain, viniṣkrāntau emerging, pañcāsyau five-hooded, pannagau iva like snakes, dadṛśātē looked.

That great Vanara appeared as if he was gulping the entire ocean with its rising waves. While he was looking upward it appeared as though he was keen to drink in the sea as well.
pibanniva babhau cāpi sōrmimālaṅ mahārṇavam৷৷5.1.57৷৷

pipāsuriva cākāśaṅ dadṛśē sa mahākapiḥ.


saḥ that, mahākapiḥ great vanara, sōrmimālam with its rising waves, mahārṇavam ocean, pibanniva as if gulping, babhau looked, ākāśam sky, ca and , api also, pipāsuriva as if thirsty, dadṛśē looked.

While he was looking upward, that great vanara appeared as if, parched with thirst, he was gulping the entire ocean with its rising waves.
tasya vidyutprabhākārē vāyumārgānusāriṇaḥ৷৷5.1.58৷৷

nayanē viprakāśētē parvatasthāvivānalau.


vāyumārgānusāriṇaḥ of him following the direction of the wind, tasya his, vidyutprabhākārē both appearing like the glow of lightning, nayanē eyes, parvatasthau on the mountain, analau iva like two fires, viprakāśētē very glittering.

As he was moving in the sky following the direction of the wind, his eyes blazed like two fires burning on the mountain, flashing like lightning.
piṅgē piṅgākṣamukhyasya bṛhatī parimaṇḍalē৷৷5.1.59৷৷

cakṣuṣī samprākāśētē candrasūryāvivōditau.


piṅgākṣamukhyasya of the leader of monkeys, piṅgē reddish-brown, bṛhatī large, parimaṇḍalē round in shape, cakṣuṣī eyes, uditau risen, candrasūryāviva like Moon and Sun, samprakāśētē were shining.

The large, round, reddish-brown eyes of Hanuman shed their bright light like the rising Moon and Sun.
mukhaṅ nāsikayā tasya tāmrayā tāmramābabhau৷৷5.1.60৷৷

sandhyayā samabhispṛṣṭaṅ yathā tatsūryamaṇḍalam.


tasya his, tāmram copper-red, mukham face, tāmrayā by the red colour, nāsikayā of the nose, sandhyayā by twilight, samabhispṛṣṭam coming close, tat that, sūryamaṇḍalaṅ yathā like the Sun's orb, ābabhau appeared.

By the reflection of his coppery-red nose, his face looked red like the Sun's orb coming close at twilight.
lāṅgūlaṅ ca samāviddhaṅ plavamānasya śōbhatē৷৷5.1.61৷৷

ambarē vāyuputrasya śakradhvaja ivōcchritam.


ambarē in the sky, plavamānasya when he was flying, vāyuputrasya of the son of the Wind-god, samāviddham installed, lāṅgūlam tail, ucchritaṅ lifted up (in the air), śakradhvajaḥ iva like the flag staff of Indra, śōbhatē looks splendid.

As the son of the Wind-god was flying through the sky, his coiled up tail looked splendid like the banner installed at the festival in honour of Indra (on the fifteenth day of the month of Bhadrapada).
lāṅgūlacakrēṇa mahān śukladaṅṣṭrō.nilātmajaḥ৷৷5.1.62৷৷

vyarōcata mahāprājñaḥ parivēṣīva bhāskaraḥ.


śukladaṅṣṭraḥ white-teethed, mahāprājñaḥ very wise, mahān great, anilātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, lāṅgūlacakrēṇa curled up tail, parivēṣī surrounded, bhāskaraḥ iva like the Sun, vyarōcata halo

With his white teeth and curled up tail, the wise son of the Wind-god looked splendid like the halo of the Sun-god.
sphigdēśēnābhitāmrēṇa rarāja sa mahākapiḥ৷৷5.1.63৷৷

mahatā dāritēnēva girirgairikadhātunā.


saḥ mahākapiḥ that great vanara, abhitāmrēṇa with red one, sphigdēśēna with his buttocks, dāritēna iva as if split, mahatā by huge, gairikadhātunā deposit of minerals, giriḥ iva like mountain, rarāja shone.

The great monkey with copper-red buttocks (other parts being dark) looked splendid like a cleft mountain with a huge deposit of minerals shining red.
tasya vānarasiṅhasya plavamānasya sāgaram৷৷5.1.64৷৷

kakṣāntaragatō vāyurjīmūta iva garjati.


sāgaram ocean, plavamānasya while he was crossing, tasya his, vānarasiṅhasya lion like vanara, kakṣāntaragataḥ through the armpits, vāyuḥ wind, jīmūtaḥ iva like thundering cloud, garjati roared.

The wind passing through the arm pits of the lion-like vanara crossing the ocean sounded like a thundering cloud.
khē yathā nipatatyulkā hyuttarāntādviniḥsṛtā৷৷5.1.65৷৷

dṛśyatē sānubandhā ca tathā sa kapikuñjaraḥ.


uttarāntāt from the northern part, viniḥsṛtā released, sānubandhā ca follows, ulkā a meteor, khē in the sky, yathā like, dṛśyatē was seen, saḥ that, kapikuñjaraḥ elephant like vanara, tathā so, nipatati falling. .

The elephant-like monkey was seen darting across the ocean(going from north to south) like a meteor risen in the north along with its tail-end falling down the sky.
patatpataṅgasaṅkāśō vyāyataḥ śuśubhē kapiḥ৷৷5.1.66৷৷

pravṛddha iva mātaṅgaḥ kakṣyayā badhyamānayā.


patatpataṅgasaṅkāśaḥ resembled the setting Sun, vyāyataḥ broad, kapiḥ monkey (Hanuman), badhyamānayā bound with, kakṣyayā with the girth, pravṛddhaḥ expanded to an enormous size, mātaṅgaḥ iva elephant like, śuśubhē appeared.

The vanara expanded into an enormous size form appeared as though moving like the setting Sun. He looked like a huge elephant bound round the waist.
upariṣṭāccharīrēṇa chāyayā cāvagāḍhayā৷৷5.1.67৷৷

sāgarē mārutāviṣṭā naurivāsīttadā kapiḥ.


tadā then, kapi: vanara, upariṣṭāt the top, śarīrēṇa with his body, sāgarē in the ocean, avagāḍhayā reflected, chāyayā ca shadow also, mārutāviṣṭā swept by the wind, nauriva like the ship, āsīt appeared.

When the vanara was flying in the sky, his shadow reflected in the ocean looked like a
ship driven by the wind and sailing on the sea below (as if the lower part of his body was under water and upper part occupied the sky)
yaṅ yaṅ dēśaṅ samudrasya jagāma sa mahākapiḥ.

sa sa tasyōruvēgēna sōnmāda iva lakṣyatē৷৷5.1.68৷৷


saḥ that, mahākapiḥ great vanara, samudrasya of the ocean, yaṅ yaṅ dēśaṅ to whichever place, jagāma went, saḥ saḥ those, tasya his, ūruvēgēna by the speed of his thighs, sōnmādaḥ iva riotous with eddies, whirlpools and revolving foam etc.like, lakṣyatē was seen.

Whichever part of the sea over which that monkey flew, it appeared as though it was riotous with eddies, whirlpools and revolving foam etc., stirred up by the speed of his thighs.
sāgarasyōrmijālānāmurasā śailavarṣmaṇām.

abhighnaṅstu mahāvēgaḥ pupluvē sa mahākapiḥ৷৷5.1.69৷৷


mahāvēgaḥ very swift, saḥ that, mahākapiḥ great vanara, śailavarṣmaṇām as mountains, sāgarasya of the ocean, ūrmijālānām the rows of waves, urasā by his chest, abhighnan while dashing against, pupluvē flew.

As the great vanara was flying swiftly, the oceanic waves in rows dashing against his chest rose as high as the mountain.
kapivātaśca balavān mēghavātaśca niḥsṛtaḥ.

sāgaraṅ bhīmanirghōṣaṅ kampayāmāsaturbhṛśam৷৷5.1.70৷৷


balavān forceful, kapivātaśca wind generated by the swift movement of the monkey, niḥsṛtaḥ rushing towards, mēghavātaśca and the wind of the clouds, bhīma nirghōṣam creating dreadful sounds, sāgaram ocean, bhṛśam violently, kampayāmāsatuḥ both started agitating.

The forceful wind generated by the monkey moving swiftly, and by the clouds agitated
the ocean violently, creating dreadful sounds.
vikarṣannūrmijālāni bṛhanti lavaṇāmbhasi.

pupluvē kapiśārdūlō vikiranniva rōdasī৷৷5.1.71৷৷


kapiśārdūlaḥ a tiger among vanaras, lavaṇāmbhasi the salt-water ocean, bṛhanti many, ūrmijālāni mighty waves of the ocean, vikarṣan pulling across, rōdasī the intermediary space (antarikṣa), vikiranniva drawing and dividing the earth and sky like, pupluvē leaped forward.

As the tiger among the monkeys pushed the big network of waves of the salt-water ocean and leaped forward, it appeared as if he was drawing the intermediary space dividing the earth and the sky.
mērumandarasaṅkāśānuddhatān sa mahārṇavē.

atyakrāmanmahāvēgastaraṅgān gaṇayanniva৷৷5.1.72৷৷


mahāvēgaḥ one who is of high speed, mahārṇavē in the ocean, uddhatān risen, mērumandarasaṅkāśān resembling mountain Meru and Mandara, taraṅgān waves, gaṇayanniva as if counting, saḥ that, atyakrāmat crossed.

Hanuman moving along in high speed looked as if he was counting the mighty waves risen ike Meru and Mandara mountains.
tasya vēgasamuddhūtaṅ jalaṅ sajaladaṅ tadā.

ambarasthaṅ vibabhrāja śāradābhramivātatam৷৷5.1.73৷৷


tadā then, tasya his, vēgasamuddhūtam raised by his onrush, sajaladam along with the cloud, jalam water, ambarastham found in the sky, ātatam stretched, śāradābhramiva like the autumnal clouds, vibabhrāja shone.

Then the water raised by his onrush along with the cloud widely spread in the sky shone like an outstreched autumnal cloud.
timinakrajhaṣāḥ kūrmā dṛśyantē vivṛtāstadā.

vastrāpakarṣaṇēnēva śarīrāṇi śarīriṇām৷৷5.1.74৷৷


tadā then, timinakrajhaṣāḥ whales, crocodiles and fish, kūrmāḥ tortoises, vastrāpakarṣaṇēna clothes put off, śarīriṇām of the bodies, śarīrāṇīva limbs of the body, vivṛtāḥ exposed, dṛśyantē appeared.

On account of the sea-water rising up, the whales, crocodiles, fish and tortoises laid bare like the limbs of the body disrobed.
plavamānaṅ samīkṣyātha bhujaṅgāḥ sāgarālayāḥ.

vyōmni taṅ kapiśārdūlaṅ suparṇa iti mēnirē৷৷5.1.75৷৷


atha and then, vyōmni in the sky, plavamānam coursing through, taṅ kapiśārdūlam that tiger among vanaras, samīkṣya seeing, sāgarālayāḥ those in the abode of the sea, bhujaṅgāḥ serpents, suparṇaḥ iti to be Garuda, mēnirē thought.

Seeing Hanuman, the tiger among vanaras, coursing through the sky the serpents in their sea-abode mistook him for Garuda.
daśayōjanavistīrṇā triṅśadyōjanamāyatā.

chāyā vānarasiṅhasya jalē cārutarābhavat৷৷5.1.76৷৷


daśayōjanavistīrṇā spread over ten yojanas in breadth, triṅśadyōjanam thirty yojanas, āyatā long, vānarasiṅhasya of the lion among monkeys, chāyā shadow, jalē in water, cārutarā more pleasing, abhavat looked.

The shadow of Hanuman, the lion among monkeys, thirty yojanas long and ten yojanas in breadth appeared more pleasing৷৷
śvētābhraghanarājīva vāyuputrānugāminī.

tasya sā śuśubhē chāyā vitatā lavaṇāmbhasi৷৷5.1.77৷৷


vāyuputrānugāminī following the Wind-god's son, lavaṇāmbhasi in the salty sea, vitatā spread out, tasya his, sā that, chāyā shadow, śvētābhraghanarājīva like dark row of clouds sailing in the pristine sky, śuśubhē shone.

The broad shadow of the son of the Wind-god in the sea following him shone like a dark row of clouds sailing in the pristine sky.
śuśubhē sa mahātējā mahākāyō mahākapiḥ.

vāyumārgē nirālambē pakṣavāniva parvataḥ৷৷5.1.78৷৷


mahātējāḥ splendid, mahākāyaḥ one with a huge body, saḥ he, mahākapiḥ great vanara, nirālambē without any support, vāyumārgē in the direction of the wind, pakṣavān having wings, parvataḥ iva like a mountain, śuśubhē seemed.

Hanuman the great vanara, splendid with a huge body coursing through the air seemed like a winged mountain flying the sky without any support.
yēnāsau yāti balavān vēgēna kapikuñjaraḥ.

tēna mārgēṇa sahasā drōṇīkṛta ivārṇavaḥ৷৷5.1.79৷৷


balavān powerful, asau he, kapikuñjaraḥ an elephant among monkeys, vēgēna swiftly, yēna mārgēṇa the path, yāti proceeding, tēna by that, sahasā instantly, arṇavaḥ the sea, drōṇīkṛtaḥ iva like a valley betwen two mountains.

As the powerful monkey, an elephant among vanaras, was proceeding swiftly along, the ocean got instantly transformed into a trough on account of water swelling by the force of his flight.
āpātē pakṣisaṅghānāṅ pakṣirāja iva vrajan.

hanumān mēghajālāni prakarṣan mārutō yathā৷৷5.1.80৷৷


hanumān Hanuman, mārutō yathā like the wind, mēghajālāni strings of clouds, prakarṣan while attracting, pakṣisaṅghānām of the group of birds, āpātē when landed, vrajan while moving, pakṣirājaḥ iva like the king of birds.

Hanuman was found pulling clusters of big clouds along with him like the Wind-god and appeared like Garuda,the king of birds, drawing flocks of birds along with him at the time of landing.
pāṇḍurāruṇavarṇāni nīlamāñjiṣṭhakāni ca.

kapinākṛṣyamāṇāni mahābhrāṇi cakāśirē৷৷5.1.81৷৷


kapinā by the vanara, ākṛṣyamāṇāni drawing, pāṇḍurāruṇavarṇāni white and red colour, nīlamāñjiṣṭhakāni ca blue and yellow clouds, mahābhrāṇi big clouds, cakāśirē shining.

While Hanuman was drawing big clouds which were either white or red or blue or yellow, he looked charming.
praviśannabhrajālāni niṣpataṅśca punaḥ punaḥ.

pracchannaśca prakāśaśca candramā iva lakṣyatē৷৷5.1.82৷৷


abhrajālāni strings of clouds, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, praviśan while entering, niṣpataṅśca and while coming out, pracchannaśca hiding, prakāśaśca and shining, candramāḥ iva like the Moon, lakṣyatē was seen.

Entering into and emerging from the clouds, he looked like the Moon that appears and disappears (behind a bank of clouds).
plavamānaṅ tu taṅ dṛṣṭvā plavaṅgaṅ tvaritaṅ tadā.

vavarṣuḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi dēvagandharvadānavāḥ৷৷5.1.83৷৷


tadā then, tvaritam quickly, plavamānam crossing, taṅ plavaṅgam that monkey, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, dēvagandharvadānavāḥ deva, gandharvas and danavas, puṣpavarṣāṇi rain of flowers, vavarṣuḥ rained.

Then seeing Hanuman crossing quickly, the gods, gandharvas and demons rained flowers on him.
tatāpa na hi taṅ sūryaḥ plavantaṅ vānarōttamam.

siṣēvē ca tadā vāyū rāmakāryārthasiddhayē৷৷5.1.84৷৷


tadā then, plavantam while he was leaping, taṅ vānarōttamam that best of vanaras, sūryaḥ Sun, rāmakāryārthasiddhayē for accomplishing Rama's task, na hi tatāpa did not discharge heat, vāyuḥ ca and even wind, siṣēvē served cool.

The Sun spared Hanuman from the heat and even the Wind-god served him, blowing cool while he was taking leaps in order to fulfil Rama's mission.
ṛṣayastuṣṭuvuścainaṅ plavamānaṅ vihāyasā.

jaguśca dēvagandharvāḥ praśaṅsantō mahaujasam৷৷5.1.85৷৷


vihāyasā in the sky, plavamānam while he leaped, mahaujasam a highly vigourous one, ṛṣayaḥ ascetics, tuṣṭuvuścainaṅ extolled him, dēvagandharvāḥ gods and gandharvas, praśaṅsantaḥ while prasing him, jaguśca also sang.

The sages praised him while he was coursing through the sky, the gods and gandharvas sang in praise of him extolling his majesty and vigour.
nāgāśca tuṣṭuvuryakṣā rakṣāṅsi vibudhāḥ khagāḥ.

prēkṣya sarvē kapivaraṅ sahasā vigataklamam৷৷5.1.86৷৷


vigataklamam unwearied, kapivaram the great monkey, prēkṣya observing, sahasā at once, nāgāśca nagas, yakṣāḥ yakshas, rakṣāṅsi rakshasas (who were protecting the southwest), vibudhāḥ
learned sages, khagāḥ birds, sarvē all, tuṣṭuvuḥ praised .

Observing the unwearied monkey the nagas, yakshas, the demons (protecting the southwest), the learned sages and birds praised him.
tasmin plavagaśārdūlē plavamānē hanūmati.

ikṣvākukulamānārthī cintayāmāsa sāgaraḥ৷৷5.1.87৷৷


plavagaśārdūlē when the tiger among vanaras, tasmin hanūmati when that monkey-chief, plavamānē while leaping, sāgaraḥ the Sea-god, ikṣvākukulamānārthī wishing the well-being and honour of the Ikshvaku family, cintayāmāsa started thinking.

While the monkey-chief was leaping (across the sea) the Sea-god wished the well-being of the Ikshvaku family and honoured him. (The Sea-god belonged to the same race) :
sāhāyyaṅ vānarēndrasya yadi nāhaṅ hanūmata:.

kariṣyāmi bhaviṣyāmi sarvavācyō vivakṣatām৷৷5.1.88৷৷


aham I, vānarēndrasya of the chief of monkeys, hanūmataḥ Hanuman's, sāhāyyam help, na kariṣyāmi yadi if I do not render, vivakṣatām by all the wise speakers, sarvavācyaḥ will be blamed, bhaviṣyāmi I will be.

'If I fail to help the monkey-chief, the wise will blame me'.
ahamikṣvākunāthēna sagarēṇa vivardhitaḥ.

ikṣvākusacivaścāyaṅ nāvasīditumarhati৷৷5.1.89৷৷


aham I, ikṣvākunāthēna by the scion of the Ikshvakus, sagarēṇa by Sagara, vivardhitaḥ made to extend , ikṣvākusacivaḥ ca and the minister of Ikshvaku race, ayam this person, avasīditum to perish, nārhati he shouldl not.

'I expanded on account of a scion of the Ikshvaku race (Sagara) and I should not do anything to make him (Hanuman) suffer since he is the minister helping the Ikshvaku race'.
tathā mayā vidhātavyaṅ viśramēta yathā kapiḥ৷৷5.1.90৷৷

śēṣaṅ ca mayi viśrāntaḥ sukhēnātipatiṣyati.


kapiḥ monkey, yathā likewise, viśramēta he may take rest, tathā in that way, mayā by myself, vidhātavyam arrangement has to be made, mayi on me, viśrāntaḥ the rest, śēṣam remaining, sukhēna comfortably, atipatiṣyati will leap over.

'I will have to make arrangements for his rest. Later he can resume his journey comfortably'.
iti kṛtvā matiṅ sādhvīṅsamudra śchannamambhasi৷৷5.1.91৷৷

hiraṇyanābhaṅ mainākamuvāca girisattamam.


samudraḥ the Sea-god, iti thus, sādhvīṅ well, matim in his mind, kṛtvā after resolving, ambhasi in waters, channam hidden, hiraṇyanābham golden, girisattamam noble mountain, mainākam to Mainaka, uvāca said.

Having resolved in his mind, the Sea-god addressed the noble, golden mount Mainaka, hidden in the sea:
tvamihāsurasaṅghānāṅ pātālatalavāsinām৷৷5.1.92৷৷

dēvarājñā giriśrēṣṭha parighaḥ sannivēśitaḥ.


giriśrēṣṭha O foremost mountain!, tvam you, iha here, pātālatalavāsinām for those residing in the nether world, asurasaṅghānām of hordes of demons, parighaḥ beam used as a barrier against the gateway, dēvarājñā by the lord of the gods, sannivēśitaḥ arranged.

'O foremost mountain! you are kept here by Indra, lord of the gods as a barrier against
the intrusion of demons residing in the nether-world.
tvamēṣāṅ jātavīryāṇāṅ punarēvōtpatiṣyatām৷৷5.1.93৷৷

pātālasyāpramēyasya dvāramāvṛtya tiṣṭhasi.


jātavīryāṇām of the violent, ēṣām for these, punarēva again, utpatiṣyatām prone to come up, tvam you, apramēyasya of the immeasurable, pātālasya nether world's, dvāram entrance, āvṛtya blocking, tiṣṭhasi are staying.

"You are staying at the entrance preventing the violent demons of the immeasurable nether world from jumping onto the surface.
tiryagūrdhvamadhaścaiva śaktistē śaila vardhitum৷৷5.1.94৷৷

tasmātsaṅcōdayāmi tvāmuttiṣṭha girisattama.


śaila O mountain!, tiryak across, ūrdhvam upward, adhaścaiva and at the bottom, vardhitum to grow, tē to you, śaktiḥ energy, girisattama O noble mountain!, tasmāt therefore, tvām you, sañcōdayāmi I am prompting, uttiṣṭha you mary rise.

"O noble mountain! you have the capacity to grow across, upward and downward by your free will. I therefore prompt you to grow.
sa ēṣa kapiśārdūlastvāmuparyēti vīryavān৷৷5.1.95৷৷

hanūmānrāmakāryārthaṅ bhīmakarmā khamāplutaḥ.


kapiśārdūlaḥ a tiger among monkeys, vīryavān valiant one, bhīmakarmā a performer of dreadful deeds, saḥ ēṣaḥ that great personality, hanūmān Hanuman, rāmakāryārtham on account of Rama's work, kham in the sky, āplutaḥ flew, tvām you upari over, ēti you

"Valiant Hanuman, a tiger among monkeys and a performer of dreadful deeds, is flying over you to fulfil Rama's mission
asya sāhyaṅ mayā kāryamikṣvākukulavartinaḥ৷৷5.1.96৷৷

mama hīkṣvākavaḥ pūjyāḥ paraṅ pūjyatamāstava.


asya to him, ikṣvākukulavartinaḥ for him who serves the Ikshvaku race, mayā by me, sāhyam help, kāryam should be given, mama to myself, ikṣvākavaḥ the kings of the Ikshvaku race, pūjyāḥ worthy of adoration, tava to you, pūjyatamāḥ most adorable .

"I should help him for he is working for the welfare of the Ikshavaku family. The Ikshvaku kings are worthy of adoration to me and for you as well.
kuru sācivyamasmākaṅ na naḥ kāryamatikramēt৷৷5.1.97৷৷

kartavyamakṛtaṅ kāryaṅ satāṅ manyumudīrayēt.


asmākam for us, sācivyam counselling (the duty of a minister), kuru you may do, naḥ for us, kāryam task, na atikramēt may not be lost, kartavyam our duty, kāryam task, akṛtam not carried out, satām for pious men, manyum anger, udīrayēt will cause.

"You may act as our minister and let us not miss this chance. Pious men lose their cool if a worthy act is left unfulfilled.
salilādūrdhvamuttiṣṭha tiṣṭhatvēṣa kapistvayi৷৷5.1.98৷৷

asmākamatithiścaiva pūjyaśca plavatāṅ varaḥ.


salilāt from the waters, ūrdhvam above, uttiṣṭha rise, asmākam for us, atithiścaiva guest also, pūjyaśca worthy of worship also, plavatām among the jumping ones, varaḥ noble, ēṣaḥ kapiḥ this monkey, tvayi on you, tiṣṭhatu let him rest.

"Rise up from the waters. Let him rest on you since this noble monkey is our guest and worthy of worship.
cāmīkaramahānābha dēvagandharvasēvita৷৷5.1.99৷৷

hanumāṅstvayi viśrāntastataḥ śēṣaṅ gamiṣyati.


cāmīkaramahānābha O golden-peaked one!, dēvagandharva sēvita resorted to by gods, gandharvas, hanumān Hanuman, tvayi by you, viśrāntaḥ resting, tataḥ then, śēṣam remaing part, gamiṣyati will cover.

"O golden-peaked mountain!you are the refuge of the gods and gandharvas. Let him also rest on you for a while before he negotiates the remaining part of the journey.
kākutsthasyānṛśaṅsyaṅ ca maithilyāśca vivāsanam৷৷5.1.100৷৷

śramaṅ ca plavagēndrasya samīkṣyōtthātumarhasi.


kākutsthasya Rama's, anṛśaṅsyaṅ ca good nature, maithilyāḥ Sita's, vivāsanaṅ ca deportation, plavagēndrasya Hanuman's, śramaṅ ca strain also, samīkṣya considering, utthātum to rise up, arhasi you ought to.

"You ought to rise up if you consider the nobility of the scion of the Kakusthas, the deportation of Mythili, and the exertion put forth by Hanuman, the lord of monkeys".
hiraṇyanābhō mainākō niśamya lavaṇāmbhasaḥ৷৷5.1.101৷৷

utpapāta jalāttūrṇaṅ mahādrumalatāyutaḥ.


hiraṇyanābhaḥ mountain with gold at its bosom, mainākaḥ Mainaka, lavaṇāmbhasaḥ of the salty ocean, niśamya after listening, mahādrumalatāyutaḥ with great trees and creepers, tūrṇam at once, jalāt from the water, utpapāta rose up.

Hearing the command of the god of the ocean, mount Mainaka, rich in gold and covered with trees and creepers rose up at once from the water.
sa sāgarajalaṅ bhittvā babhūvābhyutthitastadā৷৷5.1.102৷৷

yathā jaladharaṅ bhittvā dīptaraśmirdivākaraḥ.


tadā then, saḥ that mountain, sāgarajalam waters of the ocean, bhittvā projecting, dīptaramaśiḥ the lord of glowing rays, divākaraḥ Sun, jaladharam a cloud, bhittvā breaking, yathā as, abhyutthitaḥ rose up, babhūva appeared.

Just as the rising Sun comes out with glowing rays tearing the veil of dark clouds, the mountain rose up from the water of the ocean.
sa mahātmā muhūrtēna sarvataḥ salilāvṛtaḥ৷৷5.1.103৷৷

darśayāmāsa śṛṅgāṇi sāgarēṇa niyōjitaḥ.

ādityōdayasaṅkāśairālikhadbhirivāmbaram.

śātakumbhamayaiḥ śṛṅgaiḥ sakinnaramahōragaiḥ৷৷5.1.104৷৷


sakinnaramahōragaiḥ with nagas and kinnaras, ādityōdayasaṅkāśaiḥ resembling the rising Sun, sarvataḥ all over, salilāvṛta: submerged by water, ambaram sky, ālikhadbhi: as if scraping the sky, iva like that, śātakumbhamayaiḥ golden, śṛṅgaiḥ with peak, sarvataḥ all over, salilāvṛtaḥ covered with water, saḥ mahātmā the great mountain, sāgarēṇa the ocean's, niyōjitaḥ ordered, muhūrtēna in a moment, śṛṅgāṇi mountain peak, darśayāmāsa was seen.

At the instance of Varuna, (the presiding deity of the ocean) the lofty mountain appeared, projecting its peaks, hitherto submerged in the water. The golden peaks inhabited by nagas and kinnaras resemmbled the rising Sun as though scraping the sky in a moment.
taptajāmbūnadaiḥ śṛṅgaiḥ parvatasya samutthitaiḥ৷৷5.1.105৷৷

ākāśaṅ śastrasaṅkāśamabhavatkāñcanaprabham.


samutthitaiḥ by those risen ones, taptajāmbūnadaiḥ by barnished gold, parvatasya mountain's, śṛṅgaiḥ with peaks, śastrasaṅkāśam the colour of weapons, ākāśam sky, kāñcanaprabham, golden, abhavat appeared.

The sky shone like barnished weapons smeared with the golden colour of the
mountain peaks that rose up above the water.
jātarūpamayaiḥ śṛṅgairbhrājamānaiḥ svayaṅprabhaiḥ৷৷5.1.106৷৷

ādityaśatasaṅkāśaḥ sō.bhavadgirisattamaḥ.


svayaṅprabhaiḥ the self-effulgent ones, bhrājamānaiḥ glittering , jātarūpamayaiḥ golden, śṛṅgaiḥ by the peak, saḥ that, girisattamaḥ noble mountain, ādityaśatasaṅkāśaḥ like a thousand Suns, abhavat appeared.

The noble mountain, Mainaka was glittering like a thousand Suns with self-effulgent golden peaks shining.
tamutthitamasaṅgēna hanumānagrataḥ sthitam৷৷5.1.107৷৷

madhyē lavaṇatōyasya vighnō.yamiti niścitaḥ.


lavaṇatōyasya of the sea-water, madhyē in the midst, asaṅgēna impediment across, utthitam rising up, agrataḥ in front, sthitam stood, tam him, hanumān Hanuman, ayam this, vighnaḥ obstruction, iti thus, niścitaḥ surely.

Hanuman considered the mountain rising up in the midst of the ocean and standing in front an impediment.
sa tamucchrratamatyarthaṅ mahāvēgō mahākapiḥ৷৷5.1.108৷৷

urasā pātayāmāsa jīmūtamiva mārutaḥ.


mahāvēgaḥ swift in action, saḥ mahākapiḥ that great vanara, atyartham instantly, ucchritam risen, tam him, mārutaḥ the wind, jīmūtamiva like a cloud, urasā with the chest, pātayāmāsa pushed it down.

The great vanara,who was swift in action felled down the mountain that had risen high instantly with his chest just as the wind would strike a cloud.
sa tathā pātitastēna kapinā parvatōttamaḥ৷৷5.1.109৷৷

buddhvā tasya kapērvēgaṅ jaharṣa ca nananda ca.


tēna kapinā by that vanara, tathā in that way, pātitaḥ felled down, sa parvatōttamaḥ that high mountain, tasya kapēḥ by the vanara's, vēgam speed, buddhvā after realising, jaharṣa ca felt happy, nananda ca and roared in high pitch.

Felled by the vanara's speed, the tall mountain overwhelmed with joy roared in high pitch.
tamākāśagataṅ vīramākāśē samupasthitaḥ৷৷5.1.110৷৷

prītō hṛṣṭamānā vākyamabravītparvataḥ kapim.

mānuṣaṅ dhārayan rūpamātmanaḥ śikharē sthitaḥ৷৷5.1.111৷৷


parvataḥ mountain, prītaḥ feeling happy, hṛṣṭamānāḥ gladly, mānuṣam human, rūpam form, dhārayan assuming, ātmanaḥ his, śikharē on the summit, sthitaḥ standing, ākāśagatam gone to the aerial region, taṅ vīraṅ kapim that heroic vanara, ākāśē in the sky, samupasthitaḥ stood, vākyam these words, abravīt said.

Now the mountain assumed a human form and standing on its own summit, which stood very high, and glad at heart, addressed the heroic vanara gone to the aerial region.
duṣkaraṅ kṛtavānkarma tvamidaṅ vānarōttama.

nipatya mama śṛṅgēṣu viśramasva yathāsukham৷৷5.1.112৷৷


vānarōttama O best of the vanaras!, tvam you, duṣkaram formidable, idam this, karma deed, kṛtavān accomplished, mama my, śṛṅgēṣu on this peak, nipatya alighting, yathāsukham comfortably, viśramasva you may rest.

"O best of vanaras! you have achieved a formidable deed. Alighting on my peak and
comfortably resting awhile, you may resume your journey.
rāghavasya kulē jātairudadhiḥ parivardhitaḥ.

sa tvāṅ rāmahitē yuktaṅ pratyarcayati sāgaraḥ৷৷5.1.113৷৷


udadhiḥ the ocean, rāghavasya of Raghava's, kulē in the family, jātaiḥ by those born, parivardhitaḥ is extended, saḥ sāgaraḥ that Sagara, rāmahitē for the service of Rama, yuktam endowed with, tvām you, pratyarcayati honour in return.

"The son of Rama's family, Sagara, has extended the ocean in the past.It is most appropriate that he (the god of the sea) honours you in return as you have set out in the service of Rama.
kṛtē ca pratikartavyamēṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ.

sō.yaṅ tvatpratikārārthī tvattaḥ sammānamarhati৷৷5.1.114৷৷


kṛtē when help is rendered, pratikartavyam it should be repaid, ēṣaḥ this, sanātanaḥ eternal, dharmaḥ dharma, tatpratikārārthī for doing service in return, saḥ ayam this, tvattaḥ from you, sammānam honour, arhati he deserves.

tvannimittamanēnāhaṅ bahumānātpracōditaḥ.

tiṣṭha tvaṅ kapiśārdūla mayi viśramya gamyatām৷৷5.1.115৷৷

tava sānuṣu viśrāntaḥ śēṣaṅ prakramatāmiti.

yōjanānāṅ śataṅ cāpi kapirēṣa samāplutaḥ৷৷5.1.116৷৷


yōjanānāṅ śatam a hundred yojanas, samāplutaḥ is leaping, ēṣaḥ this, kapiḥ vanara, tava your, sānuṣu
on the peaks, viśrāntaḥ resting, śēṣam remaining, prakramatāma proceed thereafter, iti thus, anēna by this ocean, tvannimittama for your sake, aham I, bahumānāt with honour, pracōditaḥ prompted, kapiśārdūla: a tiger among monkeys, tvam you, tiṣṭha stay, mayi at my, viśramya after resting, gamyatām you can go.

"I was prompted by the ocean for your sake since he has great regard for you. O great monkey! you may rest here for a while and continue your journey. The lord of the ocean feels that this tiger among monkeys can cover the distance of a hundred yojanas. He tells me, 'let him rest on your peak and then cover the rest of the distance'.
tadidaṅ gandhavatsvādu kandamūlaphalaṅ bahu.

tadāsvādya hariśrēṣṭha viśrāntō.nu gamiṣyasi৷৷5.1.117৷৷


hariśrēṣṭha O foremost of the monkeys!, tat idam such as this, gandhavat sweet smelling, svādu tasty, bahu plenty, kandamūlaphalam roots and fruits, idam this, tat that, āsvadya after tasting, viśrāntaḥ taking rest, anu later, gamiṣyasi you may go.

"O foremost of the monkeys! after eating plenty of sweet and tasty roots and fruits and resting a while you may go.
asmākamapi sambandha: kapimukhya tvayāsti vai.

prakhyātastriṣu lōkēṣu mahāguṇaparigrahaḥ৷৷5.1.118৷৷


kapimukhya O chief of monkeys, triṣu in the three, lōkēṣu in the worlds, prakhyātaḥ well-known, mahāguṇaparigrahaḥ possesing great merits, sambandhaḥ kinship, tvayā with you, asmākamapi for us also, asti vai is there.

"O chief of monkeys!, indeed we too have a relationship with you based on merit which is well-known to all the three worlds.
vēgavantaḥ plavantō yē plavagā mārutātmaja.

tēṣāṅ mukhyatamaṅ manyē tvāmahaṅ kapikuñjara৷৷5.1.119৷৷


mārutātmaja O son of the Wind-god, kapikuñjara O elephant among monkeys, vēgavantaḥ swift, plavantaḥ jumping, yē those, plavagāḥ vanaras, tēṣām of them, mukhyatamam the foremost, tvām you, aham I, manyē believe.

"O! son of the Wind-god! you are an elephant among monkeys, the foremost among them who move at a high speed.
atithiḥ kila pūjārhaḥ prākṛtō.pi vijānatā.

dharmaṅ jijñāsamānēna kiṅ punastvādṛśō mahān৷৷5.1.120৷৷


dharmam righteousness, jijñāsamānēna who desires to know, vijānatā by a wise man, prākṛtō.pi even an ordinary person, atithiḥ a guest, pūjārhaḥ worthy of worship, tvādṛśaḥ a person like you, mahān great, kiṅ punaḥ what again, kila it is said.

"Even a newcomer, however ordinary, deserves worship by a wise man who wishes to educate himself in the path of righteousness. Needless to say that distinguished guest like you deserves all reverence.
tvaṅ hi dēvavariṣṭhasya mārutasya mahātmanaḥ.

putrastasyaiva vēgēna sadṛśaḥ kapikuñjara৷৷5.1.121৷৷


kapikuñjara foremost among vanaras!, tvam you, dēvavariṣṭhasya of the pre eminent one among the divine beings, mahātmanaḥ of the high-souled, mārutasya wind god's, putraḥ hi son indeed, vēgēna in speed, tasyaiva with his own self, sadṛśaḥ comparable.

"O foremost among the vanaras! you are the son of the high-souled Wind-god's, pre-eminent among the gods, you are also equal to him in speed.
pūjitē tvayi dharmajña pūjāṅ prāpnōti mārutaḥ.

tasmāttvaṅ pūjanīyō mē śṛṇu cāpyatra kāraṇam৷৷5.1.122৷৷


dharmajña O knower of righteousness!, tvayi when you, pūjitē if you are worshipped, mārutaḥ Wind-god, pūjām veneration, prāpnōti will recieve, tasmāt therefore, tvam you, api also, mē to me, pūjanīyaḥ worship-worthy, atra here, kāraṇaṅ ca also the cause, śṛṇu listen.

"O knower of righteousness! to worship you is to honour the Wind-god. Therefore you are worthy of worship for me. I will tell you the reason. Listen.
pūrvaṅ kṛtayugē tāta parvatāḥ pakṣiṇō.bhavan.

tē hi jagmurdiśaḥ sarvā garuḍānilavēginaḥ৷৷5.1.123৷৷


tāta O dear son!, pūrvam formerly, kṛtayugē in Krita yuga, parvatāḥ mountains,pakṣiṇaḥ had wings, abhavan endowed, tē they, garuḍānilavēginaḥ swift like Garuda and wind, sarvāḥ all, diśaḥ directions, jagmuḥ went about.

"Formerly in Kritayuga, O dear, mountains were endowed with wings. They used to move speedily in all directions like Garuda and the Wind-god.
tatastēṣu prayātēṣu dēvasaṅghā: maharṣibhiḥ.

bhūtāni ca bhayaṅ jagmustēṣāṅ patanaśaṅkayā.5.1.124৷৷


tataḥ then, tēṣu when they, prayātēṣu went about, saharṣibhiḥ and sages, dēvasaṅghā: hosts of gods, bhūtāni ca and all creatures, tēṣām their, patanaśaṅkayā out of fear of their falling down, bhayam fear, jagmuḥ felt.

"When they moved about, even hosts of sages, gods and creatures panicked for fear of falling down (and destroying all worlds).
tataḥ kruddhaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ parvatānāṅ śatakratuḥ.

pakṣān cicchēda vajrēṇa tatra tatra sahasraśaḥ৷৷5.1.125৷৷


tataḥ then, śatakratuḥ one who has performed a hundred yajnas, sahasrākṣaḥ Indra, kruddhaḥ in
anger, tatra tatra here and there, sahasraśaḥ in thousand, parvatānām of the mountains, pakṣān wings, vajrēṇa with the thunderbolt, cicchēda cut into pieces.

"Provoked at this, the thousand-eyed Indra who had performed a hundred sacrifices cut off the wings of mountains into a thousands pieces with his thunderbolt.
sa māmupāgataḥ kruddhō vajramudyamya dēvarāṭ.

tatō.haṅ sahasā kṣiptaḥ śvasanēna mahātmanā৷৷5.1.126৷৷


saḥ he, dēvarāṭ Indra, kruddhaḥ in wrath, vajram thunderbolt, udyamya held, mām to me, upāgataḥ came, tataḥ then, aham I, mahātmanā by the great self, śvasanēna by the Wind-god, sahasā at once, kṣiptaḥ dropped down.

asminlavaṇatōyē ca prakṣiptaḥ plavagōttama.

guptapakṣasamagraśca tava pitrābhirakṣitaḥ৷৷5.1.127৷৷


plavagōttama O distinguished among the vanaras!, guptapakṣasamagraśca kept my wings intact, asmin in this, lavaṇatōyē in the salt waters of the sea, prakṣiptaḥ thrown down, tava pitrā by your father, abhirakṣitaḥ protected.

"O distinguished vanara! your father, the Wind-god threw me down into this salt-water sea. Thus my wings were protected.
tatō.haṅ mānayāmi tvāṅ mānyō hi mama mārutaḥ.

tvayā mē hyēṣa sambandhaḥ kapimukhya mahāguṇaḥ৷৷5.1.128৷৷


kapimukhya O esteemed vanara!, mārutaḥ Wind-god, mama my, mānyaḥ hi revered one, tataḥ therefore, aham I, tvām you, mānayāmi I will honour you, tvayā by you, mē to me, ēṣaḥ this, sambandhaḥ relationship, mahāguṇaḥ is great.

"O esteemed vanara! the Wind-god is revered by me and so I honour you. O chief of monkeys, my bondage with you is therefore of high value to me, indeed.
asminnēvaṅgatē kāryē sāgarasya mamaiva ca.

prītiṅ prītamanāḥ kartuṅ tvamarhasi mahākapē৷৷5.1.129৷৷


mahākapē O great monkey!, asmin in this, kāryē work, ēvaṅgatē reached such a position, tvam you, prītamanāḥ whole-heartedly, sāgarasya ca and the ocean's, mamaiva ca and mine also, prītim pleasure, kartum to do, arhasi you ought to.

"O great monkey! when I hold you so high, you ought to oblige me and the (god of the) ocean whole-heartedly (and accept our hospitalty).
śramaṅ mōkṣaya pūjāṅ ca gṛhāṇa kapisattama.

prītiṅ ca bahumanyasva prītō.smi tava darśanāt৷৷5.1.130৷৷


kapisattama O noble monkey!, śramam fatigue, mōkṣya after being relieved, pūjāṅ ca and offerings, gṛhāṇa accept, prītim love, bahumanyasva oblige us, tava your, darśanāt by your presence, prītaḥ asmi I am pleased.

"O noble monkey! oblige us by accepting our offering given with love and be relieved of your fatigue. Your presence itself is welcome to me".
ēvamuktaḥ kapiśrēṣṭhastaṅ nagōttamamabravīt.

prītō.smi kṛtamātithyaṅ manyurēṣō.panīyatām৷৷5.1.131৷৷


ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having addressed, kapiśrēṣṭhaḥ the great monkey, taṅ nagōttamam to the lord of mountains, abravīt said, prītaḥ pleased, asmi I am, ātithyam hospitality, kṛtam is offered, ēṣaḥ this, manyuḥ unhappiness, apanīyatām remove.

The great Hanuman, pleased with the words of Mainaka, said "I am pleased at your
hospitality. Remove your unhappiness.
tvaratē kāryakālō mē ahaścāpyativartatē.

pratijñā ca mayā dattā na sthātavyamihāntarē৷৷5.1.132৷৷


mē to me, kāryakālaḥ schedule, tvaratē hastens, ahaḥ ca the day also, ativartatē exceeds, mayā by me, pratijñā vow, dattā ca is made, antarē in between, iha here, na sthātavyam I will not halt.

"My commitment is hastening me. The day set (for the accomplishment of the task) is also drawing to a close. A vow is made and I will not halt in the middle of my work."
ityuktvā pāṇinā śailamālabhya haripuṅgavaḥ.

jagāmākāśamāviśya vīryavān prahasanniva৷৷5.1.133৷৷


vīryavān heroic, haripuṅgavaḥ chief of monkeys, iti thus, uktvā having spoken, śailam the mountain, pāṇinā with his hand, ālabhya gently touching, ākāśam to the sky, āviśya ascended, prahasanniva with a smile on his face, jagāma departed.

Having said this, the mighty monkey gently touched the mountain with his hands before ascending to the sky with a smile on his face.
sa parvatasamudrābhyāṅ bahumānādavēkṣitaḥ.

pūjitaścōpapannābhirāśīrbhiranilātmajaḥ৷৷5.1.134৷৷


saḥ he, anilātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, parvatasamudrābhyām by both the mountain and ocean, bahumānāt with great respect, āvēkṣitaḥ was adored, upapannābhiḥ with proper ones, āśīrbhiḥ with blessings, pūjitaḥ ca also honoured.

The mountain and the sea honoured and adored the son of the Wind-god and gave him appropriate blessings.
athōrdhvaṅ dūramutplutya hitvā śailamahārṇavau.

pituḥ panthānamāsthāya jagāma vimalē.mbarē৷৷5.1.135৷৷


atha then, śailamahārṇavau the mountain and the ocean, hitvā after leaving, ūrdhvam high, dūram long distance, utplutya leaping into, vimalē in the clear, ambarē in sky, pituḥ father's, panthānam the path, āsthāya after taking, jagāma went.

And thereafter leaping a long distance into the clear sky, he (Hanuman) took the path of the Wind-god, his father, leaving behind the mountain and the sea.
bhūyaścōrdhvaṅ gatiṅ prāpya giriṅ tamavalōkayan.

vāyusūnurnirālambē jagāma vimalē.mbarē৷৷5.1.136৷৷


vāyusūnuḥ son of the Wind-god, bhūyaḥ ca further, ūrdhvam high up, gatim path, prāpya taking, taṅ girim the mountain, avalōkayan while looking at, nirālambē in a place without any support, vimalē pure, cloudless, ambarē in the sky, jagāma went.

Rising higher and further up and looking at the mountain (which was going down into the ocean), the son of the Wind-god coursed through the cloudless sky unsupported.
tad dvitīyaṅ hanumatō dṛṣṭvā karma suduṣkaram.

praśaśaṅsuḥ surāḥ sarvē siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ৷৷5.1.137৷৷


hanumataḥ of Hanuman, tat that, suduṣkaram most difficult, dvitīyam a second, karma task, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, sarvē all, surāḥ gods, siddhāśca siddhas, paramarṣayaḥ great sages, praśaṅśasuḥ praised him.

Gods, siddhas as well as the great sages praised him for the second great achievment of Hanuman, which is impossible for others to accomplish.
dēvatāścābhavan hṛṣṭāstatrasthāstasya karmaṇā.

kāñcanasya sunābhasya sahasrākṣaśca vāsavaḥ৷৷5.1.138৷৷


tatrasthāḥ those who were there, dēvatāśca gods, sahasrākṣaḥ the thousand-eyed, vāsavaśca Indra, kāñcanasya of the golden Mainaka, tasya his, sunābhasya of Sunabha, karmaṇā by the task, hṛṣṭāḥ delighted, abhavan became.

The gods who happened to be present at that time (on the mountain) and the thousand-eyed Indra were delighted by the gesture of golden Sunabha (Mainaka) mountain.
uvāca vacanaṅ dhīmān paritōṣātsagadgadam.

sunābhaṅ parvataśrēṣṭhaṅ svayamēva śacīpatiḥ৷৷5.1.139৷৷


dhīmān wise, śacīpatiḥ husband of Sachi, Indra, parvataśrēṣṭham best mountain, sunābham Sunabha, paritōṣāt satisfied, sagadgadam with throat choked, svayamēva himself, vacanam these words, uvāca spoke.

Indra, the lord of Sachi, was personally satisfied and spoke to Mainaka, the best of mountains, in faltering tone, his throat choked out of joy.
hiraṇyanābha śailēndra parituṣṭō.smi tē bhṛśam.

abhayaṅ tē prayacchāmi tiṣṭha saumya yathāsukham৷৷5.1.140৷৷


hiraṇyanābha O Hiranyanabha!, śailēndra O lord of mountains, tē with you, bhṛśam a lot, parituṣṭaḥ asmi I am pleased, saumya O pious one, tē to you, abhayam security, prayacchāmi I give, yathāsukham happily as you please, tiṣṭha you may stay on.

"O Hiranyanabha, the foremost among the mountains! I am highly pleased with you. I give you security (free from fear of losing wings). O pious one! you may stay on happily as you please.
sāhyaṅ kṛtaṅ tē sumahadvikrāntasya hanūmataḥ.

kramatō yōjanaśataṅ nirbhayasya bhayē sati৷৷5.1.141৷৷


vikrāntasya of one attempting to leap, yōjanaśatam a hundred yojanas, kramataḥ while leaping, bhayē sati when there is reason to fear, nirbhayasya of a fearless one, hanūmataḥ Hanuman, tē by you, sumahat very valuable, sāhyam help, kṛtam rendered.

"You have rendered very valuable help to Hanuman who was attempting to leap a distance of a hundred yojanas. He is fearless even when there is reason to fear (of falling down).
rāmasyaiṣa hitāyaiva yāti dāśarathērhariḥ.

satkriyāṅ kurvatā tasya tōṣitō.smi dṛḍhaṅ tvayā৷৷5.1.142৷৷


ēṣaḥ hariḥ this vanara, dāśarathēḥ of the son of Dasaratha, rāmasya Rama's, pitāyaiva for his well-being only, yāti going, tasya his, satkriyām honour, kurvatā for doing, tvayā by you, dṛḍham surely, tōṣitaḥ asmi I am pleased.

"The vanara has gone on a mission to help the son of Dasaratha. I am highly pleased with the service rendered to him.
tataḥ praharṣamagamadvipulaṅ parvatōttamaḥ.

dēvatānāṅ patiṅ dṛṣṭvā parituṣṭaṅ śatakratum৷৷5.1.143৷৷


tata: thereafter, parvatōttamaḥ the best of mountains, dēvatānām of gods,patim lord, śatakratum who had performed a hundred yajnas, Indra, parituṣṭam extremely happy,dṛṣṭvā after seeing, vipulam very much, praharṣam delight, āgamat experienced.

Thereafter Mainaka, the great mountain was delighted to see Indra, lord of the gods, performer of a hundred yajnas satisfied.
sa vai dattavaraḥ śailō babhūvāvasthitastadā.

hanumāṅśca muhūrtēna vyaticakrāma sāgaram৷৷5.1.144৷৷


tadā then, dattavaraḥ who received a boon, saḥ he, śailaḥ Mainaka, avasthitaḥ he became stable, babhūva became, hanumāṅśca Hanuma also, muhūrtēna in a short while, sāgaram ocean, vyaticakrāma crossed over.

Then mount Mainaka, assured by Indra became secure. And Hanuman also crossed over the ocean in a short while.
tatō dēvāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ.

abruvan sūryasaṅkāśāṅ surasāṅ nāgamātaram৷৷5.1.145৷৷


tataḥ then, sagandharvāḥ including gandharvas, dēvāḥ gods, siddhāśca and siddhas, paramarṣayaḥ great sages, sūryasaṅkāśām shining like the Sun, nāgamātaram mother of nagas, surasām Surasa, abruvan said.

Then the gods, gandharvas, siddhas and great sages approached Surasa, the mother of nagas, who was glowing like the Sun-god and said:.
ayaṅ vātātmajaḥ śrīmānplavatē sāgarōpari.

hanumānnāma tasya tvaṅ muhūrtaṅ vighnamācara৷৷5.1.146৷৷

rākṣasaṅ rūpamāsthāya sughōraṅ parvatōpamam.

daṅṣṭrākarālaṅ piṅgākṣaṅ vaktraṅ kṛtvā nabhaḥ samam৷৷5.1.147৷৷


hanumannāma named Hanuman, śrīmān glorious, ayaṅ this person, vātātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, sāgarōpari over the sea, plavatē is flying, tvam you, sughōram hideous, parvatōpamam gigantic like a mountain, rākṣasam demoniac, rūpam form, āsthāya assuming, daṅṣṭrākarālam with big teeth, piṅgākṣam yellow-brown eyes, nabhaḥ samam like the sky, vaktram mouth, kṛtvā doing, muhūrtam for a short while, tasya him, vighnam obstruction, ācara make.

"The glorious son of the Wind-god, called Hanuman, is crossing the ocean. Obstruct him for sometime by assuming the hideous form of a demon, gigantic as a mountain, fearful with yellowish-brown eyes, with big teeth and a wide mouth like the sky.
balamicchāmahē jñātuṅ bhūyaścāsya parākramam.

tvāṅ vijēṣyatyupāyēna viṣādaṅ vā gamiṣyati৷৷5.1.148৷৷


asya his, balam strength, bhūyaḥ once again, parākramaṅ ca and valour, upāyēna intelligence tvām you, vijēṣyati he will win, vā or else, viṣādam dejected, gamiṣyati will give way, jñātum to know, icchāmahē we wish.

"We want to assess his strength, valour and intelligence once again. We wish to know whether he will win or give way to despondency".
ēvamuktā tu sā dēvī daivatairabhisatkṛtā.

samudramadhyē surasā bibhratī rākṣasaṅ vapuḥ৷৷5.1.149৷৷

vikṛtaṅ ca virūpaṅ ca sarvasya ca bhayāvaham.

plavamānaṅ hanūmantamāvṛtyēdamuvāca ha৷৷5.1.150৷৷


dēvī the divine being, sā surasā Surasa, daivataiḥ by gods, ēvam that way, uktā having been addressed, abhisatkṛtā received their honour, samudra madhyē in the midst of the ocean, vikṛtam terrific, virūpaṅ ca ugly form, sarvasya for all, bhayāvaham frightening, rākṣasaṅ vapuḥ demoniac form, bibhratī put up, plavamānam leaping, hanūmantam Hanuman, āvṛtya after encirding him, idam these words, uvāca ha said.

Thus honoured by the gods, Surasa assumed a terrific ugly form frightening to all and stood in the midst of the ocean. Putting up a distorted appearance and encompassing Hanuman who was crossing the ocean, she spoke to him:
mama bhakṣaḥ pradiṣṭastvamīśvarairvānararṣabha.

ahaṅ tvāṅ bhakṣayiṣyāmi praviśēdaṅ mamānanam৷৷5.1.151৷৷


vānararṣabha O bull among, tvam you, īśvaraiḥ by lords of the universe, mama to me, bhakṣaḥ food, pradiṣṭaḥ are provided, aham I, tvām you, bhakṣayiṣyāmi I will eat you, idam this, mama my, ānanam
mouth, praviśa enter.

"O bull among vanaras! the lords of the universe have provided you as food for me. I will eat you. Enter my mouth".
ēvamuktaḥ surasayā prāñjalirvānararṣabhaḥ.

prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ śrīmānidaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷5.1.152৷৷


surasayā by Surasa,ēvam In that way, uktaḥ spoken, śrīmān glorious, vānararṣabhaḥ vahatata bull among vanaras, prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ with a blooming face, prāñjaliḥ with folded hands, idaṅ vacanam these words, abravīt said.

Thus addressed by Surasa, the glorious Hanuman said this with a blooming face and folded hands:
rāmō dāśarathirnāma praviṣṭō daṇḍakāvanam.

lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā vaidēhyā cāpi bhāryayā৷৷5.1.153৷৷


dāśarathiḥ Dasaratha's son, rāmō nāma called Rama, bhrātrā with his brother, lakṣmaṇēna saha accompanied by Lakshmana, bhāryayā with his wife, vaidēhyā cāpi with Vaidehi also, daṇḍakāvanam Dandaka forest, praviṣṭaḥ entered.

"Dasaratha's son called Rama accompanied by his brother Lakshmana and his wife Vaidehi entered Dandaka forest.
anyakāryaviṣaktasya baddhavairasya rākṣasaiḥ.

tasya sītā hṛtā bhāryā rāvaṇēna yaśasvinī৷৷5.1.154৷৷


rākṣasaiḥ with rakshasas, baddhavairasya deep-rooted enmity, tasya his, anyakāryaviṣaktasya while he was engaged in some other work, yaśasvinī a glorious lady, bhāryā wife, sītā Sita, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, hṛtā was abducted.

"While Rama was engaged otherwise, his glorious wife Sita was abducted by Ravana actuated by deep-rooted enmity of demons with him.
tasyāḥ sakāśaṅ dūtō.haṅ gamiṣyē rāmaśāsanāt.

kartumarhasi rāmasya sāhyaṅ viṣayavāsini৷৷5.1.155৷৷


aham I, rāmaśāsanāt by Rama's command, dūtaḥ emissary, tasyāḥ her, sakāśam for, gamiṣyē I shall go, viṣayavāsini O resident of his kingdom!, rāmasya of Rama, sāhyam help, kartum to render, arhasi it proper for you.

"I am going as Rama's emissary to search for his wife. It is proper for you to render help since you are a resident of his kingdom.
athavā maithilīṅ dṛṣṭvā rāmaṅ cākliṣṭakāriṇam.

āgamiṣyāmi tē vaktraṅ satyaṅ pratiśṛṇōmi tē৷৷5.1.156৷৷


athavā alternatively, maithilīm Mythili, akliṣṭakāriṇam one who may makes work easy (without any trouble), rāmaṅ ca and Rama, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, tē to your, vaktram mouth, āgamiṣyāmi I will reach, satyam truly, tē you, pratiśṛṇōmi I promise.

ēvamuktā hanumatā surasā kāmarūpiṇī.

abravīnnātivartēnmāṅ kaścidēṣa varō mama৷৷5.1.157৷৷


hanumatā by Hanuman, ēvam in that way, uktā having been spoken, kāmarūpiṇī one who can assume any form at free will, surasā Surasa, abravīt said, kaścit no one, nātivartēta cannot cross, ēṣaḥ such, mama to me, varaḥ boon.

Having heard Hanuman, Surasa capable of taking any form at her free will told him that no one can cross (her region) as she had been given such a boon(by the
Creator)৷৷
taṅ prayāntaṅ samudvīkṣya surasā vākyamabravīt.

balaṅ jijñāsamānā vai nāgamātā hanūmataḥ৷৷5.1.158৷৷


nāgamātā mother of serpents, surasā Surasa, hanūmataḥ of Hanuman, balam strength, jijñāsamānā vai desirous of knowing, prayāntam who was attempting to go away, tam her, samudvīkṣya observing, vākyam these words, abravīt said.

Surasa, mother of serpents, observing that Hanuman was attempting to escape, said this in order to gauge his strength:
praviśya vadanaṅ mē.dya gantavyaṅ vānarōttama.

vara ēṣa purā dattō mama dhātrēti satvarā৷৷5.1.159৷৷

vyādāya vipulaṅ vaktraṅ sthitā sā mārutēḥ puraḥ.


vānarōttama O best of the vanaras, adya today, mē my, vadanam face (mouth), praviśya after entering, gantavyam you may go, ēṣaḥ varaḥ such a boon, purā past, mama to me, dhātrā by Brahma, dattaḥ is given, iti thus, satvarā quickly, vipulam wide, vaktram mouth, vyādāya opened, sā she, mārutēḥ vanara's, puraḥ front, sthitā stood.

"O best vanara! you must pass through my mouth today. Such is the boon granted to me by Brahma in the past". Then she quickly opened her big mouth and stood.
ēvamuktaḥ surasayā kruddhō vānarapuṅgavaḥ৷৷5.1.160৷৷

abravītkuru vai vaktraṅ yēna māṅ viṣahiṣyasē.


surasayā by Surasa, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having been spoken to, vānarapuṅgavaḥ supreme vanara, kruddhaḥ got angry, abravīt he said, vaktram mouth, kuru vai open, yēna in such a way, mām me, viṣahiṣyasē you can bear me.

Thus addressed by Surasa, Hanuman the supreme vanara said, "Open your mouth wide enough to hold me."
ityuktvā surasāṅ kruddhō dhaśayōjanamāyatā৷৷5.1.161৷৷

daśayōjanavistārō babhūva hanumāṅstadā.


tadā then, hanumān Hanuman, surasāṅ Surasa, iti thus, uktvā having said, kruddhaḥ angry, daśayōjanam ten yojanas, āyatāṅ wide, daśayōjanavistāraḥ ten yojanas in breadth, babhūva became.

Provoked by the words of Surasa, Hanuman stretched himself to ten yojanas.
taṅ dṛṣṭvā mēghasaṅkāśaṅ daśayōjanamāyatam৷৷5.1.162৷৷

cakāra surasā cāsyaṅ viṅśadyōjanamāyatam.


daśayōjanam ten yojanas, āyatam wide, mēghasaṅkāśam like a cloud, tam him, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, surasā ca Surasa too, āsyam her mouth, viṅśadyōjanam twenty yojanas, āyatam wide, cakāra stretched.

Seeing his body stretched to ten yojanas like a cloud, Surasa also widened her mouth to twenty yojanas.
hanumāṅstu tataḥ kruddhastriṅśadyōjanamāyataḥ৷৷5.1.163৷৷

cakāra surasā vaktraṅ catvāriṅśattathōcchritam.

babhūva hanumāvanīraḥ pañcāśadyōjanōcchritaḥ৷৷5.1.164৷৷


tataḥ then, hanumāṅstu Hanuman also, kruddhaḥ in anger, triṅśadyōjanam thirty yojanas, āyataḥ wide, surasā Surasa, tathā like that, vaktram mouth, catvāriṅśam forty yojanas, ucchritam high, cakāra did, vīraḥ hero, hanumān Hanuman, pañcāśadyōjanōcchritaḥ fifty yojanas high, babhūva became.

Provoked, Hanuman further stretched his body to thirty yojanas and Surasa on her own enlarged her mouth to forty yojanas. Then the great hero Hanuman stretched his
body to fifty yojanas.
cakāra surasā vaktraṅ ṣaṣṭiyōjanamāyatam.

tathaiva hanumāvanīraḥ saptatīyōjanōcchritaḥ৷৷5.1.165৷৷


surasā Surasa, vaktram mouth, ṣaṣṭiyōjanam sixty yojanas, āyatam wide, cakāra did, vīraḥ heroic, hanumān Hanuman, tathaiva in the same way, saptatīyōjanōcchritaḥ increased to seventy yojanas.

Surasa widened her mouth sixty yojanas and then the heroic Hanuman enlarged himself to seventy yojanas.
cakāra surasā vaktramaśītīyōjanāyatam.

hanumānacalaprakhyō navatīyōjanōcchritaḥ৷৷5.1.166৷৷


surasā Surasa, vaktram mouth, aśītīyōjanāyatam eighty yojanas wide, cakāra made, acalaprakhyaḥ like a mountain, hanumān Hanuman, navatīyōjanōcchritaḥ ninety yojanas.

Surasa widened her mouth to eighy yojanas and the heroic Hanuman grew up to ninety yojanas, looking like a mountain.
cakāra surasā vaktraṅ śatayōjanamāyatam

tava sānuṣu viśrāntaḥ śēṣaṅ prakramatāmiti.

taddṛṣṭvā vyāditaṅ tvāsyaṅ vāyuputraḥ subuddhimān.

dīrghajihvaṅ surasayā sughōraṅ narakōpamam৷৷5.1.167৷৷

susaṅkṣipyātmanaḥ kāyaṅ babhūvāṅguṣṭhamātrakaḥ.


subuddhimān very intelligent, vāyuputraḥ Hanuman, surasayā by Surasa, vyāditam opened, dīrghajihvam long tongued, sughōram dreadful, narakōpamam like hell, tat āsyam that mouth,
dṛṣṭvā on seeing, ātmanaḥ his, kāyam body, susaṅkṣipya shrunk, aṅguṣṭhamātrakaḥ of the size of a thumb, babhūva became.

Intelligent Hanuman observing Surasa's enlarged mouth open and dreadful like hell with a long tongue, suddenly shrunk his body to the size of a thumb.
sō.bhipatyāśu tadvaktraṅ niṣpatya ca mahābalaḥ.

antarikṣē sthitaḥ śrīmānidaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷5.1.168৷৷


śrīmān glorious one, mahābalaḥ mighty, saḥ he, āśu immediatly, tadvaktram her mouth, abhipatya got in, niṣpatya ca and got out, antarikṣē in the sky, sthitaḥ stood, idam this, vacanam word, abravīt spoke.

Glorious and mighty Hanuman quickly went into her mouth and got out and stood in the sky and said:.
praviṣṭō.smi hi tē vaktraṅ dākṣāyaṇi namō.stu tē.

gamiṣyē yatra vaidēhī satyaṅ cāsīdvarastava৷৷5.1.169৷৷


dākṣāyaṇi O dughter of Daksha, tē your, vaktram mouth, praviṣṭaḥ I have entered, asmi hi I am indeed, tē to you, namaḥ salutations, astu may be, vaidēhī Vaidhehi, yatra wherever, gamiṣyē I will go, tava your, varaḥ ca boon also, satyam true, āsīt was.

"O Dakshayani! I have indeed entered your mouth and your boon has come true (as nobody can go against the boon of the Creator). Allow me to proceed in quest of Vaidhehi. My salutations to you."
taṅ dṛṣṭvā vadanānmuktaṅ candraṅ rāhumukhādiva.

abravītsurasā dēvī svēna rūpēṇa vānaram৷৷5.1.170৷৷


rāhumukhāt from the mouth of Rahu, candramiva like the Moon, vadanāt from the mouth, muktam released, taṅ him, vānaram that vanara, dṛṣṭvā seeing, surasā dēvī the divine Surasa, svēna in
her true, rūpēṇa form, abravīt said.

Seeing Hanuman released out of her mouth like the Moon released from the mouth of Rahu, Surasa assumed her true form and said:
arthasiddhyai hariśrēṣṭha gaccha saumya yathāsukham.

samānayasva vaidēhīṅ rāghavēṇa mahātmanā৷৷5.1.171৷৷


saumya O noble one!, hariśrēṣṭha O best of vanaras, arthasiddhyai for achieving your purpose, yathāsukham with pleasure, gaccha proceed, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, mahātmanā with the great self, rāghavēṇa with Raghava, samānayasva unite.

"O noble vanara! proceed happily to achieve your purpose. Go and unite Vaidehi with the noble self, Raghava.
tattṛtīyaṅ hanumatō dṛṣṭvā karma suduṣkaram.

sādhu sādhviti bhūtāni praśaśaṅsustadā harim৷৷5.1.172৷৷


suduṣkaram very difficult, hanumataḥ of Hanuman, tat that, tṛtīyaṅ karma a third feat, dṛṣṭvā after witnessing, tadā then, bhūtāni living beings, sādhu sādhu iti well-done, well-done this, harim vanara, praśaśaṅsuḥ applauded.

Witnessing Hanuman achieving a very difficult feat for the third time, all the living beings applauded him saying "Well- done, well-done".
sa sāgaramanādhṛṣyamabhyētya varuṇālayam.

jagāmākāśamāviśya vēgēna garuḍōpamaḥ৷৷5.1.173৷৷


vēgēna speedily, garuḍōpamaḥ like Garuda, saḥ he, anādhṛṣyam invincible, varuṇālayam abode of varuna, sāgaram ocean, abhyētya piercing through, ākāśam sky, āviśya coursing, jagāma went.

Rising above the invincible ocean, the abode of lord Varuna, Hanuman coursed through the sky speedily like Garuda.
sēvitē vāridhārābhiḥ patagaiśca niṣēvitē.

caritē kaiśikācāryairairāvataniṣēvitē৷৷5.1.174৷৷

siṅhakuñjaraśārdūlapatagōragavāhanaiḥ.

vimānaiḥ sampatadbhiśca vimalaiḥ samalaṅkṛtē৷৷5.1.175৷৷

vajrāśanisamāghātaiḥ pāvakairupaśōbhitē.

kṛtapuṇyairmahābhāgaiḥ svargajidbhiralaṅkṛtē৷৷5.1.176৷৷

vāridhārābhiḥ with clouds that release torrents, sēvitē frequented by, patagaiśca by birds, niṣēvitē inhabited by, kaiśikācāryaiḥ by masters (Tumburu, Narada and Gandharvas) of music and dance (Kaisika=art and science of music), caritē traversed by, airāvataniṣēvitē attended by elephant Airabata (of Indra), siṅhakuñjaraśārdūlapatagōragavāhanaiḥ with aerial vehicles drawn by
lions, elephants, tigers, birds and serpents, sampatadbhi: driven by, vimalaiḥ by clear, vimānaiḥ by aerial vehicles, samalaṅkṛtē well decorated, vajrāśanisamāghātaiḥ by the god of fire who strike fiercely like a thunderbolt, pāvakaiḥ by fires, upaśōbhitē looking splendid, kṛtapuṇyaiḥ by those who have performed meritorious deeds, mahābhāgaiḥ by accomplished people, svargajidbhi: by those who conquered heaven, alaṅkṛtē decorated, atyartham greatly, havyam havis,vahatā carrying, citrabhānunā by fire, sēvitē attended by, grahanakṣatracandrārkatārāgaṇavibhūṣitē adorned with planets, Moon, Sun and stars constellations, maharṣigaṇagandharva nāgayakṣasamākulē filled with groups of eminent sages gandharvas, nagas, yakshas, viviktē isolated region, vimalē cloudless, viśvē by vishva, viśvāvasuniṣēvitē inhabited by Vishvavasu, dēvarājagajākrāntē sporting ground for the elephant of Indra, candrasūryapathē in the path of Moon and Sun, śivē an auspicious place, jīvalōkasya for the living beings, brahmanirmitē created by Brahma, vitatē extensive, vitānē canopy, varaiḥ by the esteemed, vīraiḥ by heroes, vidyādharagaṇaiḥ by Vidyadhara groups, bahuśaḥ frequently, sēvitē attended by, vāyumārgē the path of wind, mārutiḥ Hanuman, garutmāniva like Garuda, jagāma went.

Hanuman passed through the path of wind like Garuda. The region was refreshed with clouds that released torrents of rain and frequented by birds. The great masters of music (Tumburu, Narada and Gandharvas) trained in Kasika moved there driven by lions, elephants, tigers, birds and serpents and were moving in different aerial vehicles. It was splendid with god at fire who strikes fiercely like thunderbolt. It was inhabited by great sages who had acquired merit. The region was traversed by fire-god who carried havis in large quantities earnestly. It was decorated with planets, constellations, Moon, Sun and clusters of stars. It was filled with groups of greal sages, gandharvas, nagas and yakshas. It was isolated part of the universe traversed by the king of gandharvas like Vishvavasu. It was an auspicious path for Moon and Sun, a sporting ground for Airavata, the vehicle of lord Indra. It was an extensive world of living beings created by Brahma. It was frequented by many heroes ascending to heaven and blocked by vidyadharas.
pradṛśyamānaḥ sarvatraḥ hanumānmārutātmajaḥ.

bhējē.mbaraṅ nirālambaṅ lambapakṣa ivādrirāṭ৷৷5.1.181৷৷


sarvatra all over, pradṛśyamānaḥ he appeared, mārutātmajaḥ son of Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, lambapakṣaḥ long-winged, adrirāṭ iva like king of mountains, nirālambam unsupported, ambaram the sky, bhējē occupied.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god was seen everywhere in the sky. He appeared like a
long-winged king of mountains unsupported.
plavamānaṅ tu taṅ dṛṣṭvā siṅhikā nāma rākṣasī.

manasā cintayāmāsa pravṛddhā kāmarūpiṇī৷৷5.1.182৷৷


kāmarūpiṇī who can take any form at will, siṅhikā nāma called Simhika, rākṣasī demoness, plavamānam him who was speeding in the sky, tam him, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, pravṛddhā expanded in size, cintayāmāsa started thinking.

Seeing Hanuman speeding in the sky a demoness called Simhika who can assume any form at her will had grown out of proportion and thought on her part:
adya dīrghasya kālasya bhaviṣyāmyahamāśitā.

idaṅ hi mē mahatsattvaṅ cirasya vaśamāgatam৷৷5.1.183৷৷


cirasya after a long time, idam this, mahat great, sattvam being, mē my, vaśam fold, āgatam has come, dīrghasya after a long, kālasya time, adya today, aham I, āśitā satiated, bhaviṣyāmi I will be.

iti sañcintya manasā chāyāmasya samākṣipat.

chāyāyāṅ gṛhyamāṇāyāṅ cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ৷৷5.1.184৷৷


iti thus, manasā in her mind, sañcintya after thinking, asya his, chāyām shadow, samākṣipat pulled, chāyāyām when his shadow, gṛhyamāṇāyām was held, vānaraḥ vanara, cintayāmāsa deliberated.

Thinking thus, she dragged him by his shadow before she took hold of him, Hanuman started deliberating within.
samākṣiptō.smi sahasā paṅgūkṛtaparākramaḥ.

pratilōmēna vātēna mahānauriva sāgarē৷৷5.1.185৷৷


sāgarē in the ocean, pratilōmēna from the opposite side, vātēna by the wind, mahānauriva like a huge ship, paṅgūkṛtaparākramaḥ powerless, sahasā suddenly, samākṣiptaḥ caught, asmi I am.

"I am caught suddenly. I am handicapped.I am like a huge ship in an ocean retarded by the wind blowing from the opposite direction.
tiryagūrdhvamadhaścaiva vīkṣamāṇastataḥ kapiḥ.

dadarśa sa mahatsattvamutthitaṅ lavaṇāmbhasi৷৷5.1.186৷৷


tataḥ then, kapiḥ monkey, tiryak horizontally, ūrdvam upward, athaścaiva at the bottom level, vīkṣamāṇaḥ while looking at, lavaṇāmbhasi in the salt sea, utthitam risen up, mahat huge, sattvam being, dadarśa saw.

Looking around, right and left, up and down, the monkey saw a huge being rise from the salty sea.
taddhṛṣṭvā cintayāmāsa mārutirvikṛtānanam.

kapirājēna kathitaṅ sattvamadbhutadarśanam৷৷5.1.187৷৷

chāyāgrāhi mahāvīryaṅ tadidaṅ nātra saṅśayaḥ.


mārutiḥ Maruti, vikṛtānanam hideous countenance, tat that creature, dṛṣṭvā seeing, cintayāmāsa reflected, kapirājēna by the king of monkeys, kathitam described, adbhutadarśanam of wonderful appearance, chāyāgrāhi which can hold the shadow, mahāvīryam very powerful, tat that, sattvam creature, idam this, atra here it is, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no.

Seeing the form with a hideous countenance, Hanuman reflected about the creature of ugly appearance endowed with power which can catch a creature though his shadow, about which king Sugriva had once told him. 'It is the same creature, no doubt', said
Hanuman.
sa tāṅ buddhvārthatattvēna siṅhikāṅ matimānkapiḥ৷৷5.1.188৷৷

vyavardhata mahākāyaḥ prāvṛṣīva valāhakaḥ.


matimān wise one, saḥ kapiḥ Hanuman, tām her, arthatattvēna by her true nature, siṅhikām Simhika, buddhvā recognising, mahākāyaḥ huge bodied one, prāvṛṣi in rainy season, valāhakaḥ iva like a cloud, vyavardhata grew.

Recognising the true nature of Simhika the clutcher of shadows, the wise Hanuman grew to a huge size like a cloud in rainy season.
tasya sā kāyamudvīkṣya vardhamānaṅ mahākapēḥ৷৷5.1.189৷৷

vaktraṅ prasārayāmāsa pātālāntarasannibham.


sā she, tasya mahākapēḥ Hanuman's, kāyam body, vardhamānam growing, udvīkṣya after observing, pātālāntarasannibham like the depth of the underworld, vaktram mouth, prasārayāmāsa distended.

Observing the body of Hanuman growing in size, Simhika started distending her mouth wide like the depth of the underworld.
ghanarājīva garjantī vānaraṅ samabhidravat৷৷5.1.190৷৷

sa dadarśa tatastasyā vivṛtaṅ sumahanmukham.

kāyamātraṅ ca mēdhāvī marmāṇi ca mahākapiḥ৷৷5.1.191৷৷


ghanarājīva like a mass of heavy clouds, garjantī roaring, vānaram that vanara, samabhidravat ran towards him, tataḥ then, mēdhāvī intelligent, mahākapiḥ Hanuman, tasyāḥ her, vivṛtam opened, kāyamātram body alone, sumahat enormous, mukham mouth, marmāṇi ca vatal parts, saḥ he, dadarśa saw.

Roaring like a heavy mass of clouds, Simhika chased Hanuman. Intelligent Hanuman
observed her enormous mouth and noticed her vital parts.
sa tasyā vivṛtē vaktrē vajrasaṅhananaḥ kapiḥ.

saṅkṣipya muhurātmānaṅ niṣpapāta mahābalaḥ৷৷5.1.192৷৷


mahābalaḥ strong one, vajrasaṅhananaḥ of thunderbolt-like physique, saḥ kapiḥ that vanara, ātmānam himself, muhuḥ once again, saṅkṣipya contracted, tasyāḥ her, vivṛtē open, vaktrē in the mouth, niṣpapāta entered.

Hanuman, the vanara whose physique was as hard as thunderbolt suddenly contracted once again and entered her opened mouth.
āsyē tasyā nimajjantaṅ dadṛśuḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ.

grasyamānaṅ yathā candraṅ pūrṇaṅ parvaṇi rāhuṇā৷৷5.1.193৷৷


siddhacāraṇāḥ siddhas and charanas, tasyāḥ her, āsyē in the mouth, nimajjantam drowning in, parvaṇi on full-moon day, rāhuṇā by Rahu, grasyamānam being seized, pūrṇam full, candraṅ yathā like the Moon, dadṛśuḥ saw.

The siddhas and charanas who were watching his performance of drowning in her mouth were amazed as though the moon is seized by Rahu on a full-moon night.
tatastasyā nakhaistīkṣṇairmarmāṇyutkṛtya vānaraḥ.

utpapātātha vēgēna manaḥ sampātavikramaḥ৷৷5.1.194৷৷


tataḥ thay, vānaraḥ vanara, tīkṣṇaiḥ with sharp, nakhaiḥ with nails, tasyāḥ her, marmāṇi private vital parts, utkṛtya after tearing, atha then, manaḥ sampātavikramaḥ with the speed of mind in action, vēgēna quickly, utpapāta rushed out.

The vanara who had the speed of mind tore her vital parts with his sharp nails and rushed out quickly before she closed her mouth.
tāṅ tu dṛṣṭvā ca dhṛtyā ca dākṣiṇyēna nipātya ca.

sa kapipravarō vēgādvavṛdhē punarātmavān৷৷5.1.195৷৷


ātmavān self-controlled, saḥ he, kapipravaraḥ great monkey, tām her, dṛṣṭvā ca after seeing, dhṛtyā ca with firmness of mind, dākṣiṇyēna with ingenuity, nipātya thrown down, punaḥ again, vēgāt rapidly, vavṛdhē grew in size.

Self-controlled Hanuman, the great monkey acting with firmness of mind and ingenuity threw her down and once again rapidly grew in size.
hṛtahṛtsā hanumatāpapāta vidhurāmbhasi.

tāṅ hatāṅ vānarēṇāśu patitāṅ vīkṣya siṅhikām৷৷5.1.196৷৷

bhūtānyākāśacārīṇi tamūcuḥ plavagōttamam.


sā that, hanumatā by Hanuman, hṛtahṛt heart torn, vidhurā miserable, ambhasi into water, papāta fell down, vānarēṇa by vanara, āśu instantly, hatām killed, patitām dropped, vīkṣya seeing, ākāśācārīṇi moving in the sky, bhūtāni beings, tam him, plavagōttamam best of vanaras, ūcuḥ addressed.

Heart torn asunder and killed by Hanuman, miserable Simhika instantly fell into the sea water. Observing it, the beings who ranged the sky said to the foremost of vanaras:
bhīmamadya kṛtaṅ karma mahatsattvaṅ tvayā hatam৷৷5.1.197৷৷

sādhayārthamabhiprētamariṣṭaṅ plavatāṅ vara.


plavatāṅ vara O great jumper!, adya to day, tvayā by you, mahat great, sattvam creature, hatam is destroyed, bhīmam fierce, karma action, kṛtam done, abhiprētam intention, artham aim, ariṣṭam unobstructed, sādhaya you fulfill

"O great jumper! a great deed has been done by you today in killing that fierce
creature. O great monkey! fulfil your mission without any obstruction.
yasya tvētāni catvāri vānarēndra yathā tava৷৷5.1.198৷৷

dhṛtirdṛṣṭirmatirdākṣyaṅ saḥ karmasu na sīdati.


vānarēndra O lord of vanara!, yasya in whom, dhṛtiḥ fortitude, dṛṣṭiḥ vision, matiḥ intelligence, dākṣyam dexterity, ētāni these, catvāri four, tava yathā as in you, sa: he, karmasu in missions, na sīdati will not get lost.

"O lord of vanaras! he in whom these four qualities, fortitude, vision, intelligence and dexterity exist as in you will achieve his mission and not get lost".
sa taiḥ sambhāvitaḥ pūjyaḥ pratipannaprayōjanaḥ৷৷5.1.199৷৷

jagāmākāśamāviśya pannagāśanavatkapiḥ.


pūjyaḥ a venerable one, saḥ kapiḥ that monkey, taiḥ by them, sambhāvitaḥ honoured, pratipannaprayōjanaḥ achieved the objective, ākāśam sky, āviśya having ascended, pannagāśānavat like Garuda, jagāma went.

Honoured by them the venerable monkey went ascending into the sky like Garuda to achieve the objective.
prāptabhūyiṣṭhapārastu sarvataḥ pratilōkayan৷৷5.1.200৷৷

yōjanānāṅ śatasyāntē vanarājiṅ dadarśa saḥ.


prāptabhūyiṣṭhapāraḥ on reaching the other side of the shore, sarvataḥ all over, pratilōkayan looked around, yōjanānām of yojanas, śatasya of a hundred, antē at the end of, vanarājim rows of forest trees, dadarśa saw.

On reaching the other side of the shore crossing a hundred yojanas, he saw rows of forest trees.
dadarśa ca patannēva vividhadrumabhūṣitam৷৷5.1.201৷৷

dvīpaṅ śākhāmṛgaśrēṣṭhō malayōpavanāni ca.


śākhāmṛgaśrēṣṭhaḥ best among the animals that jump on branches, monkeys, patannēna onwhile yet on air, vividhadrumabhūṣitam adorned with several kinds of beautiful trees, dvīpam island, malayōpavanāni gardens bordering Malaya mountain, dadarśa ca also saw.

Hanuman, the best among jumpers, even while in air he saw an island adorned with many trees, also gardens adjacent to Malaya mountain.
sāgaraṅ sāgarānūpaṅ sāgarānūpajān drumān৷৷5.1.202৷৷

sāgarasya ca patnīnāṅ mukhyānyapi vilōkayan.

sa mahāmēghasaṅkāśaṅ samīkṣyātmānamātmavān৷৷5.1.203৷৷

nirundhantamivākāśaṅ cakāra matimān matim.


ātmavān self-controlled, matimān wise, saḥ he, sāgaram sea, sāgarānūpam marshy track bordering the sea, sāgarānūpajān grown in the region, drumān trees, sāgarasya ocean's, patnīnām consorts, mukhānyapi ca mouths also, vilōkayan while looking at, mahāmēghasaṅkāśam like a huge cloud, ākāśam sky, nirundhantamiva as if obstructing, ātmānam his own body, samīkṣya after observing, matim cakāra thought.

Looking at the ocean, he observed the sea bordering the land and the trees grown on the marshy land in the region of the mouths of the rivers (the consorts of the sea.). Looking at his own body which was like a huge cloud as though obstructing the sky, the wise monkey of self-control thought as follows.
kāyavṛddhiṅ pravēgaṅ ca mama dṛṣṭvaiva rākṣasāḥ৷৷5.1.204৷৷

mayi kautūhalaṅ kuryariti mēnē mahākapiḥ.


mama my, kāyavṛddhim increasing size of the body, pravēgaṅ ca and speed, dṛṣṭvaiva after seeing,
rākṣasāḥ demons, mayi at me, kautūhalam inquisitive, kuryuḥ will have, iti this, mahākapiḥ great monkey, mēnē felt.

'The demons will be inquisitive to know about me seeing the extra-ordinary size of my body as well as my speed', thought the great monkey.
tataḥ śarīraṅ saṅkṣipya tanmahīdharasannibham৷৷5.1.205৷৷

punaḥ prakṛtimāpēdē vītamōha ivātmavān.


tataḥ then, tat that, mahīdharasannibham like a huge mountain, tat that, śarīram body, saṅkṣipya having contracted, vītamōhaḥ giving up ignorance, ātmavāniva like a sage, punaḥ once again, prakṛtim natural size, āpēdē assumed.

Then Hanuman contracted his huge mountain-like body and assumed his normal form, just as a sage who gives up ignorance on awakening .
tadrūpamatisaṅkṣipya hanumān prakṛtau sthitaḥ৷৷5.1.206৷৷

trīn kramāniva vikramya balivīryaharō hariḥ.


hanumān Hanuman, tat that, rūpam form, atisaṅkṣipya contracting to very small size, balivīryaharaḥ just as Hari took small form to defeat king Bali, hariḥ Lord Visnu, trīn three, kramān strides, vikramya iva overpowering the valour, prakṛtau his original form, sthitaḥ stood.

Hanuman returned to his normal form contracting to his small size, just like Lord Visnu returned to his original form after taking three strides and defeating the valour of king Bali.
sa cārunānāvidharūpadhārī paraṅ samāsādya samudratīram.

parairaśakyaḥ pratipannarūpaḥ samīkṣitātmā samavēkṣitārdhaḥ৷৷5.1.207৷৷


cārunānāvidharūpadhārī who can take diffrent lovely forms, paraiḥ by others, aśakyaḥ not possible, saḥ he, param opposite side, samudratīram sea shore, samāsādya after reaching, samīkṣitātmā
gazing at his own self, pratipannarūpaḥ assumed a form suitable for the purpose, samavēkṣitārthaḥ considered.

He reached the opposite shore of the sea. He had achieved the impossible. One who could assume a variety of lovely forum, he, gazing at his own body, deliberated on the future course of action.
tataḥ sa lambasya girēḥ samṛddhē vicitrakūṭē nipapāta kūṭē .

sakētakōddālakanālikērē mahādrikūṭapratimō mahātmā৷৷5.1.208৷৷


tataḥ then, mahādrikūṭapratimaḥ top of the huge Trikuta mountain, saḥ he, mahātmā great self, lambasya girēḥ on the mountain called Lamba, vicitrakūṭē on a mountain with wonderful, samṛddhē rich, sakētakōddālakanālikērē in Kethaka Uddalaka, Panasa and Coconut trees, pratimō descended, nipapāta landed kūṭē peak

Then the high-souled Hanuman, who resembled a huge mountain, descended on the peak of the huge mountain Trikuta, called Lamba, which was wonderful with kethaka flowers, uddalaka and coconut trees.
tatastu samprāpya samudratīraṅ samīkṣya laṅkāṅ girivaryamūrdhni.

kapistu tasninnipapāta parvatē vidhūya rūpaṅ vyathayanmṛgadvijān৷৷5.1.209৷৷


tataḥ then, kapiḥ tu vanara also, samudratīram to sea shore, samprāpya after reaching, girivaryamūrdhni located on the mountain peak, laṅkām Lanka, samīkṣya having observed, rūpam form, vidhūya shook, mṛgadvijān beasts and birds, vyathayan scared, tasmin on that, parvatē on the mountain, nipapāta landed.

Reaching the sea shore, beholding Lanka located on the peak of Trikuta, Hanuman shook his body, scaring the beasts and birds and landed on the mountain.
sa sāgaraṅ dānavapannagāyutaṅ balēna vikramya mahōrmimālinam.

nipatya tīrē ca mahōdadhēstadā dadarśa laṅkāmamarāvatīmiva৷৷5.1.210৷৷


saḥ he, dānavapannagāyutam filled with demons and serpents, mahōrmimālinam of garland of high waves, sāgaram ocean, balēna by his process, vikramya having crossed, mahōdadhēḥ the great ocean, tīrē on the shore, nipatya having landed, tadā then, amarāvatīmiva resembling Amaravati, laṅkām Lanka, dadarśa he saw.

Landing on the shore after crossing by his prowess the great ocean filled with demons, and serpents, adorned with garlands of waves, Hanuman beheld Lanka which was like Amaravati, the capital of Indra.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē prathamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the first sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
