[Hanuman mistakes Mandodari for Sita -- soon dismises his wrong inference -- sees the women of harem lying in disorder -- could not find Sita]

avadhūya ca tāṅ buddhiṅ babhūvāvasthitastadā.

jagāma cāparāṅ cintāṅ sītāṅ prati mahākapiḥ৷৷5.11.1৷৷


mahākapiḥ great vanara, tadā then, tām such, buddhim judgement, avadhūya having rejected, avasthitaḥ stood, babhūva remained, sītāṅ prati about Sita, aparām again, cintām thinking, jagāma started.

The great vanara, having rejected his judgement, started thinking again.
na rāmēṇa viyuktā sā svaptumarhati bhāminī.

na bhōktuṅ vāpyalaṅkartuṅ na pānamupasēvitum৷৷5.11.2৷৷

nānyaṅ naramupasthātuṅ surāṇāmapi cēśvaram.

na hi rāmasamaḥ kaścidvidyatē tridaśēṣvapi৷৷5.11.3৷৷

anyēyamiti niścitya pānabhūmau cacāra saḥ.


bhāminī lovely lady, rāmēṇa about Rama, viyuktā separated, svaptum to sleep, na arhati will not, bhōktum na not to eat, alaṅkartum to decorate, api also, na not, pānam drinking, upasēvitum to serve, surāṇām among gods, īśvaramapi even the lord, anyam and others, naram man, upasthātum to approach, na not, hi indeed, rāmasamaḥ equal to Rama, kaścit any one, tridaśēṣvapi even among gods, na vidyatē hi not exist, iyam this lady, anyā other, iti thus, niścitya having decided, saḥ he, pānabhūmau at the banquet, cacāra strolled.

'Lovely Sita, being away from Rama, will not sleep, will not eat or drink or adorn herself. How can she approach any other man even if he is the king of gods for there is none equal to Rama even among gods'. Having thus decided, Hanuman strolled
about the banquet hall.
krīḍitēnāparāḥ klāntā gītēna ca tathā.parāḥ৷৷5.11.4৷৷

nṛttēna cāparāḥ klāntāḥ pānaviprahatāstathā.


parāḥ other women, krīḍitēna by sporting, klāntāḥ fatigued, tathā similarly, aparāḥ others, gītēna due to singing, aparāḥ others, nṛttēna by dancing, klāntāḥ tired out, tathā so also, pānaviprahatāḥ worn out due to continuous drinking.

Some women were fatigued after sporting, similarly some were exhausted after singing. Others were tired through dancing and some were worn out by continuous drinking.
murajēṣu mṛdaṅgēṣu pīṭhikāsu ca saṅsthitāḥ৷৷5.11.5৷৷

tathā৷৷staraṇamukhyēṣu saṅviṣṭāścāparāḥ striyaḥ.


murajēṣu on murajas, mṛdaṅgēṣu on tabors, pīṭhikāsu ca on hassocks, saṅsthitāḥ resting, aparāḥ other, striyaḥ women, āstaraṇamukhyēṣu on exquisite beds, saṅviṣṭāḥ lying.

Some women reclined on tabors, some on murajas, and some on drums and hassocks while some slept on excellent couches.
aṅganānāṅ sahasrēṇa bhūṣitēna vibhūṣaṇaiḥ৷৷5.11.6৷৷

rūpasallāpaśīlēna yuktagītārthabhāṣiṇā.

dēśakālābhiyuktēna yuktavākyābhidhāyinā৷৷5.11.7৷৷

ratābhiratasaṅsuptaṅ dadarśa hariyūthapaḥ.


vibhūṣaṇaiḥ with ornaments, bhūṣitēna adorned, rūpasallāpaśīlēna good at arguments, yuktagītārthabhāṣiṇā versed in appreciation, dēśakālābhiyuktēna acquainted with the appropriateness of time and place, yuktavākyābhidhāyinā good at appropriate expressions,
aṅganānām of women, sahasrēṇa thousands, ratābhiratasaṅsuptam sleeping after long sexual intercourse, hariyūthapaḥ monkey leader, dadarśa saw.

The monkey leader saw thousands of beautiful women asleep after long dalliance. Some of them were adorned with ornaments, some were good at arguments and versed in the appreciation of songs, some were aware of the appropriate time and place and some were adept in right expressions.
tāsāṅ madhyē mahābāhuḥ śuśubhē rākṣasēśvaraḥ৷৷5.11.8৷৷

gōṣṭhē mahati mukhyānāṅ gavāṅ madhyē yathā vṛṣaḥ.


tāsām their, madhyē in the midst, mahābāhuḥ long-armed, rākṣasēśvaraḥ lord of ogres, mahati a big, gōṣṭhē in a shed, gavām of cows, madhyē in the midst, vṛṣaḥ iva like a bull, śuśubhē shone.

In the midst of these women the long-armed lord of demons shone like a (majestic) bull in a big cowshed.
sa rākṣasēndraḥ śuśubhē tābhiḥ parivṛtassvayam৷৷5.11.9৷৷

karēṇubhiryathā.raṇyē parikīrṇō mahādvipaḥ.


tābhiḥ by those women, parivṛtaḥ surrounded, saḥ rākṣasēndraḥ the demon king, svayam himself, mahāraṇyē in a great forest, karēṇubhiḥ with female elphants, parikīrṇaḥ scattered, mahādvipaḥ yathā like a proud elephant, śuśubhē shone.

Surrounded by the women, the demon king shone like a proud elephant attended by many female elephants scattered in a dense forest.
sarvakāmairupētāṅ ca pānabhūmiṅ mahātmanaḥ৷৷5.11.10৷৷

dadarśa hariśārdūlastasya rakṣaḥpatērgṛhē.


hariśārdūlaḥ tiger among vanaras, mahātmanaḥ of the great, tasya his, rakṣaḥpatē: Ravana's, gṛhē in the palace, sarvakāmaiḥ with all his, upētām provided, pānabhūmiṅ ca drinking place, dadarśa saw.

The tiger among vanaras saw at the great Ravana's palace a drinking place where everything one desires was provided.
mṛgāṇāṅ mahiṣāṇāṅ ca varāhāṇāṅ ca bhāgaśaḥ৷৷5.11.11৷৷

tatra nyastāni māṅsāni pānabhūmau dadarśa saḥ.


saḥ he, tatra there, pānabhūmau at the drinking hall, bhāgaśaḥ in portions, nyastāni placed, mṛgāṇām on the deer, mahiṣāṇāṅ ca buffaloes, varāhāṇāṅ ca pigs, māṅsāni meat, dadarśa saw.

There at the drinking hall the meat of deer, buffaloes and boars portioned and placed.
raukmēṣu ca viśālēṣu bhājanēṣvardhabhakṣitān৷৷5.11.12৷৷

dadarśa hariśārdūlō mayūrān kukkuṭāṅstathā.


hariśārdūlaḥ tiger among vanaras, raukmēṣu in golden, viśālēṣu in large ones, bhājanēṣu vessels, ardhabhakṣitān half eaten, mayūrān peacocks, tathā so also, kukkuṭān chicken, dadarśa saw.

The tiger among vanaras also saw there meat of peacocks and chicken placed in large golden vessels, some half eaten.
varāhavārdhrāṇasakān dadhisauvarcalāyutān৷৷5.11.13৷৷

śalyān mṛgamayūrāṅśca hanumānanvavaikṣata.


dadhisauvarcalāyutān marinated with yoghurt and special salt, varāhavārdhrāṇasakān meat of pigs and jungle fowls, hanumān Hanuman, anvavaikṣata observed, śalyān bones, mṛgamayūrāṅśca deer and peacocks.

Hanuman saw the meat of pigs and jungle fowls, deer, peacocks and bones marinated with yoghurt and special kinds of salt.
krakarānvividhān siddhāṅścakōrānardhabhakṣitān৷৷5.11.14৷৷

mahiṣānēkaśalyāṅśca chāgāṅśca kṛtaniṣṭhitān.

lēhyānuccāvacānpēyān bhōjyāni vividhāni ca৷৷5.11.15৷৷


vividhān several types, siddhān cooked, krakarān fowls, ardhabhakṣitān half eaten, cakōrān ruddy geese, mahiṣān buffaloes, ēkaśalyāṅśca fishes, chāgāṅśca goats, uccavacān all sorts of them, lēhyān varieties of food that can be licked, pēyān drinks, vividhāni of many kinds, bhōjyāni eatables.

He saw several kinds of (non-vegetarian) food like cooked meat of fowls, ruddy geese, buffaloes, goats, fishes as well as food for licking. (Food is of four kinds 1) bhakṣya which can be chewed 2) bhōjya ordinary solid, semi-solid food which can be consumed 3) lēhya food for licking 4) cōṣya liquid food (which can be sipped)).
tathā৷৷mlalavaṇōttaṅsairvividhairāgaṣāḍabaiḥ.

hāranūpurakēyūrairapaviddhairmahādhanaiḥ৷৷5.11.16৷৷

pānabhājanavikṣiptaiḥ phalaiśca vividhairapi.

kṛtapuṣpōpahārā bhūradhikaṅ puṣyati śriyam৷৷5.11.17৷৷


tathā so also, āmlalavaṇōttaṅsaiḥ seasoned with sour and salty ingredients, vividhaiḥ with many types, rāgaṣāḍabaiḥ with syrups, apaviddhai: with discarded, mahādhanaiḥ with heavy, hāranūpurakēyūraiḥ with chains, anklets, shoulder straps, pānabhājanavikṣiptai: with those drinks spilt from the glasses, vividhaiḥ with many, phalaiśca fruits, kṛtapuṣpōpahārā with the offerings flowers of, bhūḥ the earth, adhikam greatly, śriyam rich, puṣyati looked splendid.

The banquet hall looked splendid with food seasoned with salt and sour ingredients. There was ragashadavas (syrup made with grapes, pomegranates, different juices like half ripe mangoes and seasoned with ginger cardomom, butter etc). Heavy chains, anklets and shoulders-straps were thrown aside. (The people relaxed while eating and drinking and discarded heavy ornaments). Many glasses were found scattered or drinks spilt on the floor after use.Many fruits and flowers were kept.
tatra tatra ca vinyastai: suśliṣṭaiśśayanāsanaiḥ.

pānabhūmirvinā vahniṅ pradīptēvōpalakṣyatē৷৷5.11.18৷৷


pānabhūmiḥ banquet hall, tatra tatra here and there, vinyastai: arranged, suśliṣṭaiḥ well-arranged, śayanāsanaiḥ with beds and seats, vinā vahnim without fire, pradīptēva as if glowing, upalakṣyatē seemed.

Good couches and different kinds of seats were well-arranged in the banquet hall. The place appeared as if it was glowing witout fire.
bahuprakārairvividhairvarasaṅskārasaṅskṛtaiḥ.

māṅsaiḥ kuśalasampṛktaiḥ pānabhūmigataiḥ pṛthak৷৷5.11.19৷৷


bahuprakāraiḥ in many ways, vividhaiḥ with many kinds, narasaṅskārasaṅskṛtaiḥ by those seasoneed with many types of ingredients, kuśalasampṛktai: cooked by experts, pṛthak separately, pānabhūmigataiḥ at the banquet hall, māṅsaiḥ with meat.

In the banquet hall there were many types of meat arranged in a number of ways. They were cooked by experts by seasoning them with choicest ingredients.
divyāḥ prasannā vividhāḥ surāḥ kṛtasurā api.

śarkarā.savamādhvīkapuṣpāsavaphalāsavāḥ৷৷5.11.20৷৷

vāsacūrṇaiśca vividhairmṛṣṭāstaistaiḥ pṛthak pṛthak.


divyāḥ wonderful, prasannāḥ pleasing, vividhāḥ many, surāḥ wines, śarkarāsavamādhvīkapuṣpāsavaphalāsavāḥ sugercane-juices, honey, juices made from flowers and fruits, kṛtasurāḥ api even though fermented, taistai: as mentioned earlier, vividhaiḥ with many, vāsacūrṇaiḥ with spice powders, pṛthak pṛthak diferent and, mṛṣṭāḥ were made delicious.

There were many types of wonderful and pleasing wine extracted from sugarcane, honey , fruits and flowers. They were good even though fermented and made delicious
by seasoning with aromatic spices.
santatā śuśubhē bhūmirmālyaiśca bahusaṅsthitaiḥ৷৷5.11.21৷৷

hiraṇmayaiśca vividhairbhājanaiḥ sphāṭikairapi.

jāmbūnadamayaiścānyaiḥ karakairabhisaṅvṛtā৷৷5.11.22৷৷


bahusaṅsthitaiḥ arranged in varied styles, mālyaiśca with garlands, saṅtatā strectched, hiraṇmayaiḥ with those made of gold, sphāṭikairapi and crystalware, vividhaiḥ several kinds, bhājanaiḥ with vessels, jāmbūnadamayaiḥ made of pure gold, anyaiḥ by others, karakaiḥ with jars, abhisaṅvṛtā spread all over, bhūmiḥ floor, śuśubhē looked beautiful.

(The banquet hall) appeared beautiful with many kinds of garlands arranged in different locations. Also there were vessels made of pure gold, crystalware and jars spread all over.
rājatēṣu ca kumbhēṣu jāmbūnadamayēṣu ca.

pānaśrēṣṭhaṅ tadā bhūri kapistatra dadarśa ha৷৷5.11.23৷৷


kapiḥ monkey, tadā then, rājatēṣu in those made of silver, jāmbūnadamayēṣu ca in those made of pure gold, kumbhēṣu in pots, bhūri abundant, pānaśrēṣṭham best of wines, dadarśa ha saw.

Hanuman saw the best of wines in large quantities kept in silver and pure gold pots.
sō.paśyacchātakumbhāni sīdhōrmalāmaṇimayāni ca.

rājatāni ca pūrṇāni bhājanāni mahākapiḥ৷৷5.11.24৷৷


sa: mahākapiḥ that great monkey, śīdhōḥ of wine, śātakumbhāni made of gold, maṇimayāni ca inlaid with gems also, rājatāni ca and silver, pūrṇāni filled, bhājanāni vessels, apaśyat saw.

The great monkey saw the wine jars made of gold and silver studded with crystals and gems.
kvacidalpāvaśēṣāṇi kvacitpītāni sarvaśaḥ.

kvacinnaiva prapītāni pānāni sa dadarśa ha৷৷5.11.25৷৷


sa he, kvacit in one place, alpāvaśēṣāṇi left over, kvacit at one place, sarvaśaḥ fully, pītāni drained, kvacit yet in another spot, naiva prapītāni not touched even a little, pānāni drinks, dadarśa ha saw.

He saw wine jars at one place, some fully drained, and at another place not touched at all.
kvacid bhakṣyāṅśca vividhān kvacitpānāni bhāgaśaḥ.

kvacidannāvaśēṣāṇi paśyanvai vicacāra ha৷৷5.11.26৷৷


kvacit in one place, vividhān many types, bhakṣyāṅśca eatables, kvacit in another place, bhāgaśaḥ separated, pānāni drinks, kvacit in another places, annāvaśēṣāṇi left over food, paśyan while looking at, vicacāra ha he moved about.

He moved about looking at different types of eatables and drinks arranged separately along with the left over food.
kvacitprabhinnaiḥ karakaiḥ kvacidālōlitairghaṭaiḥ.

kvacitsaṅpṛktamālyāni jalāni ca phalāni ca৷৷5.11.27৷৷


kvacit in one place, prabhinnaiḥ with broken, karakaiḥ with pots, kvacit at other place, ālōlitaiḥ with rolling, ghaṭaiḥ with pots, kvacit somewhere else, saṅpṛktamālyāni strewn and mixed up flower garlands, jalāni ca and water, phalāni ca and fruits.

At some places he saw broken pots, at other places rolling pots and elsewhere flower garlands strewn and mixed up with water and fruits.
śayanānyatra nārīṇāṅ śubhrāṇi bahudhā punaḥ.

parasparaṅ samāśliṣya kāścitsuptā varāṅganāḥ৷৷5.11.28৷৷


atra there, nārīṇām women's, śayanāni beds, punaḥ again, bahudhā severally, śubhrāṇi clean (unused) kāścit some, varāṅganāḥ lovely women, parasparam each other, samāśliṣya having embraced, suptāḥ slept.

Hanuman saw many beds some unused and some occupied by lovely women sleeping, embracing one another.
kāścicca vastramanyasyāssvapantyāḥ paridhāya ca.

āhṛtya cābalāḥ suptā nidrābalaparājitāḥ৷৷5.11.29৷৷


kāścit some, abalāḥ women, nidrābalaparājitāḥ succumbed to sleep, svapantyāḥ of sleeping women, anyasyāḥ others, vastram clothes, āhṛtya after pulling, paridhāya covering their bodies with the same, suptāḥ slept.

Overcome with sleep some women pulled clothes of other women and covered their bodies with them.
tāsāmucchavāsavātēna vastraṅ mālyaṅ ca gātrajam.

nātyarthaṅ spandatē citraṅ prāpya mandamivānilam৷৷5.11.30৷৷


tāsām their, gātrajam on their bodies, vastram clothes, mālyaṅ ca and garlands, ucchavāsavātēna by their exhaling, mandam mildly, anilam wind, prāpya iva as though caught, nātyartham by that, citram it is lovely, spandatē moving.

The lovely clothes and garlands on the bodies of women were moving mildly by their exhalations as if shaken by the gentle breeze.
candanasya ca śītasya śīdhōrmadhurasasya ca.

vividhasya ca mālyasya dhūpasya vividhasya ca৷৷5.11.31৷৷

bahudhā mārutastatra gandhaṅ vividhamudvahan.


tatra there, mārutaḥ the wind, śītasya of cool, candanasya of sandal, śīthōḥ of the wines, madhurasasya ca of sweet smelling, vividhasya of diverse, mālyasya and of garlands, vividhasya of several types, dhūpasya ca and of incense, vividham several, gandham fragrances, bahudhā in many ways, udvahan blew.

With the many scents of cool sandal, of sweet-smelling wines of diverse kinds, as well as flower garlands of several types and of incense burning in that hall, the cool wind blew spreading several fragrances all over.
snānānāṅ candanānāṅ ca dhūpānāṅ caiva mūrchitaḥ৷৷5.11.32৷৷

pravavau surabhirgandhō vimānē puṣpakē tadā.


tadā then, puṣpakē vimānē in the Pushpaka chariot, snānānām followed by bath, candanānāṅ ca of sandals, dhūpānāṅ caiva also incense, surabhiḥ sweet smelling wines, gandhaḥ fragrance, mūrchitaḥ spread, pravavau wafted through.

The wind wafting through the Pushpaka chariot carried the fragrance of the cool sandal-paste used in bath and the sweet smell of wines and thick smoke of fragrance spread further.
śyāmāvadātāstatrānyāḥ kāścitkṛṣṇā varāṅganāḥ৷৷5.11.33৷৷

kāścit kāñcanavarṇāṅgyaḥ pramadā rākṣasālayē.


tatra there, rākṣasālayē in the abode of the ogres, anyāḥ others, śyāmāvadātāḥ of glowing dark complexion, kāścit some, varāṅganāḥ lovely women, kṛṣṇāḥ dark in colour, kāścit some, pramadāḥ women, kāñcanavarṇāṅgyaḥ of golden complexion.

There in the demons abode were women who were fair, some lovely with dark and others with golden complexion.
tāsāṅ nidrāvaśatvācca madanēna vimūrchitam৷৷5.11.34৷৷

padminīnāṅ prasuptānāṅ rūpamāsīdyathaiva hi.


nidrāvaśatvācca overwhelmed with sleep, madanēna ca and due to dalliance, vimūrchitam exhausted, prasuptānām of the sleeping, tāsām their, rūpam charm, prasuptānām of the sleeping, padminīnām of lotus creepers, yathaiva as, āsīt was seen.

Withered due to indulgence in sex they were overcome with sleep. The charm of the women was like the lotus creepers with closed lotuses .
ēvaṅ sarvamaśēṣēṇa rāvaṇāntaḥ puraṅ kapiḥ৷৷5.11.35৷৷

dadarśa sumahātējāḥ na dadarśa ca jānakīm.


sumahātējāḥ brilliant, kapiḥ monkey, ēvam in that way, sarvam all, rāvaṇāntaḥpuraṅ harem of Ravana, aśēṣēṇa thoroughly, dadarśa searched, jānakīṅ ca Janaki, na dadarśa did not see.

Brilliant Hanuman ransacked the harem of Ravana but found no Janaki.
nirīkṣamāṇaśca tadā tāḥ striyaḥ sa mahākapiḥ৷৷5.11.36৷৷

jagāma mahatīṅ cintāṅ dharmasādhvasaśaṅkitaḥ.


tadā then, striyaḥ women, nirīkṣamāṇaḥ while seeing, saḥ he, mahākapiḥ the great monkey, dharmasādhvasaśaṅkitaḥ thinking that he transgressed the moral code, mahatīm great, cintām worry, jagāma experienced.

The great monkey was very much worried as he thought he had transgressed the moral code by watching the women.
paradārāvarōdhasya prasuptasya nirīkṣaṇam৷৷5.11.37৷৷

idaṅ khalu mamātyarthaṅ dharmalōpaṅ kariṣyati.


prasuptasya of those sleeping, paradārāvarōdhasya of the inner chambers of others' wives, idam this, mama on my part, nirīkṣaṇam observing them, atyartham very much, dharmalōpam trangression of moral code, kariṣyati will lead to.

'Observing the wives of others in this manner in their inner chambers very much amounts to transgression of moral code by me'. ( thought he)
na hi mē paradārāṇāṅ dṛṣṭirviṣayavartinī৷৷5.11.38৷৷

ayaṅ cātra mayā dṛṣṭaḥ paradārāparigrahaḥ.


mē my, dṛṣṭiḥ to view, paradārāṇām others' wives, viṣayavartinī sensual, na hi not indeed, atra there, mayā by me, ayam this, paradārāparigrahaḥ others' wives, dṛṣṭaśca were seen.

'I did see these wives of another, but not with a sensual mind. I have only seen them but not with foul intention'.
tasya prādurabhūccintā punaranyā manasvinaḥ৷৷5.11.39৷৷

niścitaikāntacittasya kāryaniścayadarśinī.


manasvinaḥ highly sensible, niścitaikāntacittasya struck with a bright idea in a single direction, tasya his, punaḥ again, kāryaniścayadarśinī the decision regarding the task ahead, anyā other, cintā thought, prādurabhūt arose.

Another bright idea struck the highly sensible Hanuman, who had a clear vision of the task ahead-- 'I was firm and single-minded in my direction regarding the task ahead' (thought he).
kāmaṅ dṛṣṭā mayā sarvā viśvastā rāvaṇastriyaḥ৷৷5.11.40৷৷

na hi mē manasaḥ kiñcidvaikṛtyamupajāyatē.


viśvastāḥ loyal, sarvāḥ all, rāvaṇastriyaḥ wives of Ravana, mayā by me, kāmaṅ dṛṣṭāḥ are seen indeed
without any foul desire, mē my, manasaḥ minds, kiñcit even a little, vaikṛtyam passionate feeling, na upajāyatē hi indeed not arise.

'It is true I saw all the loyal wives of Ravana but without any foul desire. Indeed in my mind no passionate feeling was ever aroused'.
manō hi hētuḥ sarvēṣāmindriyāṇāṅ pravartanē৷৷5.11.41৷৷

śubhāśubhāsvavasthāsu tacca mē suvyavasthitam.


śubhāśubhāsu for good and bad, avasthāsu in all stages, sarvēṣām for all, indriyāṇām of sense organs, pravartanē in reaction, manaḥ mind, hētuḥ is instrumental, mē my, tacca that also, suvyavasthitam is firmly eastablished.

'Mind propels the sense organs to do good or bad deeds. (But) my mind is firmly esatablished in righteousness'.
nānyatra hi mayā śakyā vaidēhī parimārgitum৷৷5.11.42৷৷

striyō hi strīṣu dṛśyantē sadā samparimārgaṇē.


vaidēhī Vaidehi, anyatra at other places, parimārgitum to search, mayā by me, na śakyā hi not possible indeed, sadā always, samparimārgaṇē during search, striyaḥ women, strīṣu among women, dṛśyantē can be seen.

'It is not possible for me to look for Vaidehi elsewhere. During such search operations one always looks for women among women.'
yasya sattvasya yā yōnistasyāṅ tatparimārgyatē.

na śakyā pramadā naṣṭā mṛgīṣu parimārgitum৷৷5.11.43৷৷


yasya whose, sattvasya of a being, yā whichever, yōniḥ source, tat that, tasyām in that, parimārgyatē is searched, naṣṭā lost, pramadā woman, mṛgīṣu among female deer, parimārgitum to search, na śakyā not possible.

'One has to search a creature among its own species. It is not possible to find a lost woman in the herd of female deer'.
tadidaṅ mārgitaṅ tāvacchuddhēna manasā mayā৷৷5.11.44৷৷

rāvaṇāntaḥpuraṅ sarvaṅ dṛśyatē na tu jānakī.


tat that, mayā by me, śuddhēna with a pure, manasā mind, idam this, sarvam all, rāvaṇāntaḥpuram Ravana's harem, mārgitam searched, jānakī tu but Janaki also, na dṛśyatē is not seen.

'I searched all over Ravana's harem with a pure mind but I have not seen Janaki'.
dēvagandharvakanyāśca nāgakanyāśca vīryavān৷৷5.11.45৷৷

avēkṣamāṇō hanumānnaivāpaśyata jānakīm.


dēvagandharvakanyāśca daughters of gods, gandharvas also, nāgakanyāśca and daughters of nagas, avēkṣamāṇaḥ looked, vīryavān valiant, hanumān Hanuman, jānakīm Janaki, naivāpaśyata did not find.

Even while valiant Hanuman was looking among the daughters of gods, gandharvas and nagas he could not find Janaki.
tāmapaśyankapistatra paśyañścānyā parastriyaḥ৷৷5.11.46৷৷

apakramya tadā vīraḥ pradhyātumupacakramē.


vīraḥ hero, kapiḥ vanara, tatra there, tām her, apaśyan not able to see, anyāḥ others, parastriyaḥ the wives of others, paśyañśca and while seeing, tadā then, apakramya having moved aside, pradhyātum to contemplate, upacakramē started.

Heroic Hanuman, unable to find Sita among the women, moved aside and started thinking.
sa bhūyastu paraṅ śrīmān mārutiryatnamāsthitaḥ৷৷5.11.47৷৷

āpānabhūmimutsṛjya tadvicētuṅ pracakramē.


śrīmān Illustrious, saḥ mārutiḥ Maruti, bhūyaḥ once again, param great, yatnam effort, āsthitaḥ made, āpānabhūmim banquet hall, utsṛjya leaving, tat that, vicētum to search, pracakramē departed.

Illustrious Hanuman left the banquet hall to renew his effort in search of Sita.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē ēkādaśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the eleventh sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
