[Hanuman's soliloquy in despondency.]

vimānāttu susamkramya prākāraṅ hariyūthapaḥ.

hanumānvēgavānāsīdyathā vidyudghanāntarē৷৷5.13.1৷৷


hariyūthapaḥ vanara leader, hanumān Hanuman, vimānāt from the aerial chariot, prākāram boundary wall, susamkramya jumped, ghanāntarē in the clouds, vidyut yathā like the lightning, vēgavān speedily, āsīt appeared.

Hanuman, the vanara leader, jumped from the aerial chariot to the boundary wall like a flash of lightning in the clouds.
samparikramya hanumānrāvaṇasya nivēśanāt.

adṛṣṭvā jānakīṅ sītāmabravīdvacanaṅ kapiḥ৷৷5.13.2৷৷


kapiḥ vanara, hanumān Hanuman, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, nivēśanāt from the home, samparikramya going round, jānakīm Janaka's daughter, sītām Sita, adṛṣṭvā not seeing, vacanam these words, abravīt spoke.

Going round the palace of Ravana, unable to see Janaka's daughter Sita, Hanuman spoke thus to himself:
bhūyiṣṭhaṅ lōlitā laṅkā rāmasya caratā priyam.

na hi paśyāmi vaidēhīṅ sītāṅ sarvāṅgaśōbhanām৷৷5.13.3৷৷


rāmasya Rama's, priyam to please, caratā while doing, laṅkā Lanka, bhūyiṣṭham in and out, lōlitā checked thoroughly, sarvāṅgaśōbhanām of beautiful limbs, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, sītām Sita, na hi paśyāmi I have not seen.

"I have thoroughly surveyed the entire city of Lanka to please Rama, but I am unable to find Sita of flawless beauty.
palvalāni taṭākāni sarāṅsi saritastathā.

nadyō.nūpavanāntāśca durgāśca dharaṇīdharāḥ৷৷5.13.4৷৷

lōlitā vasudhā sarvā na tu paśyāmi jānakīm.


palvalāni waterlogs, taṭākāni tanks, sarāṅsi lakes, tathā similarly, saritaḥ streams, nadyaḥ rivers, anūpavanāntāśca along the woods, durgāḥ difficult places to reach, dharaṇīdharāḥ mountains, sarvā: all, vasudhā over the land, lōlitā searched, jānakīṅ tu but Janaki, na paśyāmi I have not seen.

"I have searched for Sita thoroughly in waterlogs, lakes, tanks, streams and rivers and all over the woods and among mountains that are difficult to reach. I have searched all over the land but have not been able to find Janaki.
iha sampātinā sītā rāvaṇasya nivēśanē৷৷5.13.5৷৷

ākhyātā gṛdhrarājēna na ca paśyāmi tāmaham.


sītā Sita, iha here, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, nivēśanē in his palace, gṛdhrarājēna by the king of vultures, sampātinā by Sampati, ākhyātā has told, aham I, tām her, na ca paśyāmi but have not seen her.

"Sampati, king of vultures had said that Sita is at Ravana's palace. But I have not been able to see her.
kiṅ nu sītā.tha vaidēhī maithilī janakātmajā৷৷5.13.6৷৷

upatiṣṭhēta vivaśā rāvaṇaṅ duṣṭacāriṇam.


atha now, vaidēhī princess of Videha, maithilī Mythili, janakatmājā Janaka's daughter, sītā Sita, vivaśā dejected helpless, duṣṭacāriṇam a man of evil-conduct, rāvaṇam to Ravana, kiṅ nu upatiṣṭhēta did she succumb?

"Can it be that Mythili, daughter of Janaka, dejected and helpless succumbed to the evil intentions of Ravana.
kṣipramutpatatō manyē sītāmādāya rakṣasaḥ৷৷5.13.7৷৷

bibhyatō rāmabāṇānāmantarā patitā bhavēt.


rāmabāṇānām of the arrows of Rama, bibhyataḥ out of fear, rakṣasaḥ the demon, sītām Sita, ādāya having brought, kṣipram at great speed, utpatataḥ while flying, antarā in the middle, patitā dropped, bhavēt may be, manyē I think.

"Or, perhaps she might have been dropped midway from the hold of Ravana while he was flying at great speed, afraid of the deadly arrows of Rama?
athavā hriyamāṇāyāḥ pathi siddhaniṣēvitē৷৷5.13.8৷৷

manyē patitamāryāyā hṛdayaṅ prēkṣya sāgaram.


athavā or else, siddhaniṣēvitē frequented by siddhas, pathi on the path, hriyamāṇāyāḥ while being borne away, āryāyāḥ of the noble lady, hṛdayam heart, sāgaram sea, prēkṣya on seeing, patitam fallen, manyē I think.

"Or, perhaps while being borne away on the path frequented by siddhas, the beloved of Rama might have fallen down (dead), heart broken, on seeing the (vast) sea.
rāvaṇasyōruvēgēna bhujābhyāṅ pīḍitēna ca৷৷5.13.9৷৷

tayā manyē viśālākṣyā tyaktaṅ jīvitamāryayā.


rāvaṇasya Ravana's, uruvēgēna by the high speed in the flight, bhujābhyām with the arms, pīḍitēna ca being under pressure, viśālākṣyā by the large-eyed one, tayā by her, āryayā by the noble lady, jīvitam life, tyaktam given up, manyē I think.

"He thinks, on account of the high speed during the flight of Ravana under the
pressure of his arms, the noble, large-eyed lady might have given up her life.
uparyupari vā nūnaṅ sāgaraṅ kramatastadā৷৷5.13.10৷৷

vivēṣṭamānā patitā sāgarē janakātmajā.


tadā then, sāgaram uparyupari higher and higher over the sea, kramataḥ for him while he advanced, janakātmajā Janaki, vivēṣṭamānā wriggling hard to extricate, sāgarē in the sea, nūnam surely, patitā fallen.

"Surely, she might have fallen into the sea while wriggling in her effort to extricate herself from the hold of Ravana as he was flying over the sea.
ahō kṣudrēṇa vā.nēna rakṣantī śīlamātmanaḥ৷৷5.13.11৷৷

abandhurbhakṣitā sītā rāvaṇēna tapasvinī.


ahō Oh, ātmanaḥ of her self, śīlam chastity, rakṣantī while protecting, abandhuḥ distanced from relatives, tapasvinī a helpless woman, sītā Sita, kṣudrēṇa by the cruel one, anēna by him, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, bhakṣitā eaten.

"Oh poor Sita, distanced from relations, while protecting her chastity helplessly she might have been devoured by cruel Ravana.
athavā rākṣasēndrasya patnībhirasitēkṣaṇā৷৷5.13.12৷৷

aduṣṭā duṣṭabhāvābhirbhakṣitā sā bhaviṣyati.


athavā or else, aduṣṭā a pious lady, asitēkṣaṇā black-eyed one, sā that, duṣṭabhāvābhiḥ by the cruel-natured, rākṣasēndrasya of the lord of rakshasas, patnībhiḥ by wives also, bhakṣitā eaten, bhaviṣyati I think.

"Or else, the pious, black-eyed Sita might have been eaten by the the cruel-natured wives of the lord of demons.
sampūrṇacandrapratimaṅ padmapatranibhēkṣaṇam৷৷5.13.13৷৷

rāmasya dhyāyatī vaktraṅ pañcatvaṅ kṛpaṇā gatā.


kṛpaṇā poor lady, sampūrṇacandrapratimam like the full-moon, padmapatranibhēkṣaṇam with eyes like lotus petals, rāmasya Rama's, vaktram face, dhyāyatī meditating on, pañcatvam death, gatā attained.

"Or, she might have attained death, meditating on Rama, whose face resembles the full-moon and eyes the lotus petals.
hā rāma lakṣmaṇētyēvaṅ hā.yōdhyē cēti maithilī৷৷5.13.14৷৷

vilapya bahu vaidēhī nyastadēhā bhaviṣyati.


vaidēhī Vaidehi, maithilī Mythili, hā rāma Alas, Rama!, hā lakṣmaṇa alas, Lakshmana!, hā ayōdhyā alas, Ayodhya!, iti thus, bahu very much, vilapya weaping, nyastadēhā cast off life, bhaviṣyati may be.

"Or, Vaidehi, the princess of Mithila might have cast off her life grieving intensely and crying, 'Alas, Rama, alas, Lakshmana, alas, Ayodhya'. (Mithila is the name of the capital city and Videha is the country which was ruled by Janaka. Sita, the princess is known as Vaidehi, Mythili and Janaki).
athavā nihitā manyē rāvaṇasya nivēśanē৷৷5.13.15৷৷

nūnaṅ lālapyatē sītā pañjarasthēva śārikā.


athavā or else, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, nivēśanē in his palace, nihitā kept, sītā Sita, pañjarasthā in the cage, śārikā iva like myna, nūnam surely, lālapyatē crying, manyē I think.

"Or, I think Sita might have been imprisoned in a cage like a myna in Ravana's palace. She will be surely crying.
janakasya sutā sītā rāmapatnī sumadhyamā৷৷5.13.16৷৷

kathamutpalapatrākṣī rāvaṇasya vaśaṅ vrajēt.


janakasya Janaka's, sutā daughter, rāmapatnī Rama's wife, sumadhyamā a lady of beautiful waist, utpalapatrākṣī eyes like lotus petals, sītā Sita, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, vaśam fold, katham how, vrajēt can come under.

"How could Janaki, the daughter of Janaka, Rama's wife, the lady with a beautiful waist and eyes like lotus petals, come under the fold of Ravana?
vinaṣṭā vā praṇaṣṭā vā mṛtā vā janakātmajā৷৷5.13.17৷৷

rāmasya priyabhāryasya na nivēdayituṅ kṣamam.


janakātmajā Janaka's daughter, vinaṣṭā vā whether lost, praṇaṣṭā vā or whether irretrievable, mṛtā vā or dead, priyabhāryasya for him who is fond of his wife, rāmasya of Rama, nivēdayitum to report, na kṣamam not proper.

"Whether Janaki is lost or irretrievable or dead is not known The news should not be reported to Rama, who is very fond of his wife.
nivēdyamānē dōṣassyāddōṣassyādanivēdanē৷৷5.13.18৷৷

kathaṅ nu khalu kartavyaṅ viṣamaṅ pratibhāti mē.


nivēdyamānē by informing this, dōṣaḥ mistake, syāt may be, anivēdanē by not informing, dōṣaḥ mistake, syāt may be, katham how, kartavyaṅ nu khalu what to do, mē to me, viṣamam difficult, pratibhāti appears.

"To carry or not to carry this news to Rama would be a mistake. What shall I do? I am facing a tough situation.
asminnēvaṅgatē kāryē prāptakālaṅ kṣamaṅ ca kim৷৷5.13.19৷৷

bhavēditi mataṅ bhūyō hanumānpravicārayat.


asmin in this, kāryē in this regard, ēvaṅ gatē when things took such a turn, prāptakālam right time, kṣamam proper, kim what, bhavēt will be, iti thus, matam opinion, hanumān Hanuman, bhūyaḥ once again, pravicārayat deliberated.

"I wonder what the right course of action is when things have taken such a turn? What is proper for me to do? Hanuman once again deliberated.
yadi sītāmadṛṣṭvā.haṅ vānarēndrapurīmitaḥ৷৷5.13.20৷৷

gamiṣyāmi tataḥ kō mē puruṣārthō bhaviṣyati.


aham I, sītām Sita, adṛṣṭvā without seeing, itaḥ from here, vānarēndrapurīm city of vanaras, gamiṣyāmi I reach, yadi if, tataḥ then, kaḥ what (has been accomplished), puruṣārthaḥ accomplishment, bhaviṣyati will happen.

"If I return to Kishkinda without seeing Sita of what use is my effort? What have I accomplished? What will happen? (Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha are the four Purusharthas or accomplishments in life)
mamēdaṅ laṅghanaṅ vyarthaṅ sāgarasya bhaviṣyati৷৷5.13.21৷৷

pravēśaścaiva laṅkāyāḥ rākṣasānāṅ ca darśanam.


mama my, idam this, sāgarasya of the ocean, laṅghanam crossing, laṅkāyāḥ of Lanka, pravēśaśca entry, rākṣasānām of ogres, darśanam seeing, vyartham futile, bhaviṣyati would be.

"My crossing the ocean, my entry into Lanka and my survey of the demons are all futile.
kiṅ māṅ vakṣyati sugrīvō harayō vā samāgatāḥ৷৷5.13.22৷৷

kiṣkindhāṅ samanuprāptaṅ tau vā daśarathātmajau.


kiṣkindhām at Kishkinda, samanuprāptam reached, mām to me, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, kim what, vakṣyati
he says, samāgatāḥ collected, harayaḥ vā even vanaras, tau those two, daśarathātmajau vā sons of Dasaratha.

"What will Sugriva or even the vanaras and the two sons of Dasaratha say when I reach Kishkinda?
gatvā tu yadi kākutsthaṅ vakṣyāmi paramapriyam৷৷5.13.23৷৷

na dṛṣṭēti mayā sītā tatastakṣyati jīvitam.


gatvā after reaching, kākutstham Kakutstha, mayā by me, sītā Sita, na dṛṣṭā not seen, iti like this, param most, apriyam unpleasant, vakṣyāmi yadi if I say, tataḥ then, jīvitam life, tyakṣyati he will give up.

"If I report the most unpleasant news that Sita was not found, Rama will give up his life.
paruṣaṅ dāruṇaṅ krūraṅ tīkṣṇamindriyatāpanam৷৷5.13.24৷৷

sītānimittaṅ durvākyaṅ śrutvā sa na bhaviṣyati.


paruṣam harsh, dāruṇam dreadful, krūram cruel, tīkṣṇam sharp, indriyatāpanam that which can scorch senses, sītānimittam about Sita, durvākyam unwelcome words, śrutvā after hearing, saḥ Rama, na bhaviṣyati will not live.

taṅ tu kṛcchragataṅ dṛṣṭvā pañcatvagatamānasam৷৷5.13.25৷৷

bhṛśānuraktō mēdhāvī na bhaviṣyati lakṣmaṇaḥ.


kṛcchragatam in painful state, pañcatvagatamānasam one who has almost given his life, tam him, dṛṣṭvā seeing, bhṛśānuraktaḥ deeply devoted, mēdhāvī wise, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, na bhaviṣyati will not survive.

"Seeing Rama in such a painful state, wise Lakshmana who has given his life to Rama, to whom he is deeply devoted will also not survive.
vinaṣṭau bhrātarau śrutvā bharatō.pi mariṣyati৷৷5.13.26৷৷

bharataṅ ca mṛtaṅ dṛṣṭvā śatrughnō na bhaviṣyati.


bhrātarau both brothers, vinaṣṭau dead, śrutvā after hearing, bharatō.pi Bharata also, mariṣyati will die, mṛtam dead, bharatam of Bharata, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, śatrughnaśca even Satrughna, na bhaviṣyati will not live.

"On hearing the death of both the brothers Bharata will also die. On seeing this Satrughna will also not live.
putrānmṛtānsamīkṣyātha na bhaviṣyanti mātaraḥ৷৷5.13.27৷৷

kausalyā ca sumitrā ca kaikēyī ca na saṅśayaḥ.


atha then, mātaraḥ mothers, kausalyā ca and Kausalya, sumitrā ca even Sumitra, kaikēyī ca even Kaikeyi, putrān of sons, mṛtān of their death, samīkṣya on seeing, na bhaviṣyanti will not be able to live, saṅśayaḥ na no doubt.

kṛtajñassatyasandhaśca sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ৷৷5.13.28৷৷

rāmaṅ tathā gataṅ dṛṣṭvā tatastyakṣyati jīvitam.


kṛtajñaḥ grateful, satyasandhaḥ truthful, plavagādhipaḥ leader of monkeys, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, tathā likewise, gatam gone, rāmam Rama, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, tataḥ then, jīvitam life, tyakṣyati will give up.

"On seeing that Rama has ended his life, the grateful and truthful monkey leader,
Sugriva will give up his life.
durmanā vyathitā dīnā nirānandā tapasvinī৷৷5.13.29৷৷

pīḍitā bhartṛśōkēna rumā tyakṣyati jīvitam.


bhartṛśōkēna on account of her husband's grief, pīḍitā tormented, durmanāḥ disheartened, vyathitā pained, dīnā dejected, nirānandā unhappy, tapasvinī helpless, rumā Ruma, jīvitam life, tyakṣyati will give up.

"Distressed, disheartened, pained and grieved on account of her husband's death, the virtuous lady Ruma (wife of Sugriva) will be unhappy and die.
vālijēna tu duḥkhēna pīḍitā śōkakarśitā৷৷5.13.30৷৷

pañcatvaṅ ca gatē rājñi tārā.pi na bhaviṣyati.


vālijēna caused by Vali, duḥkhēna by sorrow, pīḍitā troubled, śōkakarśitā fertured with grief, tārāpi Tara too, rājñi when the king, pañcatvam gone to other world, gatē having gone, na bhaviṣyati will not live

"Tara who is troubled by Vali's death and tortured with grief will not live when king Sugriva dies.
mātāpitrōrvināśēna sugrīvavyasanēna ca৷৷5.13.31৷৷

kumārō.pyaṅgadaḥ kasmāddhārayiṣyati jīvitam.


kumāraḥ prince, aṅgadō.pi Angada also, mātāpitrōḥ of his mother and father, vināśēna by death, sugrīvasya Sugriva's, vyasanēna by calamity, jīvitam life, kasmāt why, dhārayiṣyati will retain.

"On account of his parents death and also because of Sugriva's calamity, Angada will give up his life.
bhartṛjēna tu duḥkhēna hyabhibhūtā vanaukasaḥ৷৷5.13.32৷৷

śirāṅsyabhihaniṣyanti talairmuṣṭibhirēva ca.


naukasaḥ vanaras, bhartṛjēna on account of the events affecting their king, duḥkhēna by grief, abhibhūtāḥ overpowered, talaiḥ with their palms, muṣṭibhirēva ca and with their fists, śirāṅsi their heads, abhihaniṣyanti will hit themselves.

"The grief due to the death of their king will make the vanaras hit their heads with their palms and fists.
sāntvēnānupradānēna mānēna ca yaśasvinā৷৷5.13.33৷৷

lālitāḥ kapirājēna prāṇāṅstyakṣyanti vānarāḥ.


yaśassvinā by the illustrious one, kapirājēna by the king of vanaras, sāntvēna by good words, anupradānēna by offering gifts, mānēna by respecting, lālitāḥ reared, vānarāḥ vanaras, prāṇān life, tyakṣyanti will give up.

"The vanaras who were reared by the king's kind words, gifts and care will give up their life.
na vanēṣu na śailēṣu na nirōdhēṣu vā punaḥ৷৷5.13.34৷৷

krīḍāmanubhaviṣyanti samētya kapikuñjarāḥ.


kapikuñjarāḥ chiefs among vanaras, samētya collected together, vanēṣu in the forest, krīḍām play, na anubhaviṣyanti will not enjoy, śailēṣu on the mountains, na nirōdhēṣu vā or in the caves, punaḥ again, na not.

"The chiefs among vanaras together will not enjoy their life in the forest or mountains or caves.
saputradārāssāmātyā bhartṛvyasanapīḍitāḥ৷৷5.13.35৷৷

śailāgrēbhyaḥ patiṣyanti samēṣu viṣamēṣu ca.


saputradārāḥ with sons and wives, sāmātyāḥ with ministers together, bhartṛvyasanapīḍitāḥ tormented by the suffering of their king's death, śailāgrēbhyaḥ from the mountain peaks, samēṣu on the plains, viṣamēṣu ca and on uneven grounds, patiṣyanti will fall (drop down).

"Tormented by their king's death the vanaras with their wives, sons and ministers will drop down from the mountain peaks on the rough ground and die.
viṣamudbandhanaṅ vāpi pravēśaṅ jvalanasya vā৷৷5.13.36৷৷

upavāsamathō śastraṅ pracariṣyanti vānarāḥ.


vānarāḥ vanaras, viṣam poison, udbandhanaṅ vāpi or by hanging, jvalanasya in the fire, pravēśaṅ vā entering, upavāsam by fasting, athō or, śastram weapon, pracariṣyanti they will use to put an end.

"The vanaras will put an end to their lives by poisoning or by hanging or by self-immolation or by killing themselves with weapons or by fasting unto death.
ghōramārōdanaṅ manyē gatē mayi bhaviṣyati৷৷5.13.37৷৷

ikṣvākukulanāśaśca nāśaścaiva vanaukasām.


mayi gatē when I go, ikṣvākukulanāśaśca destruction of the Ikshvakus, vanaukasām of vanaras, nāśaścaiva destruction, ghōram dreadful, ārōdanam weeping, bhaviṣyati will be, manyē I think.

"If I go there (without finding Sita), it will cause destruction of the Ikshvakus and vanaras would weep. It would be dreadful.
sō.haṅ naiva gamiṣyāmi kiṣkindhāṅ nagarīmitaḥ৷৷5.13.38৷৷

na ca śakṣyāmyahaṅ draṣṭuṅ sugrīvaṅ maithilīṅ vinā.


aham I, itaḥ from here, kiṣkindhāṅ nagarīm to the city of Kishkinda, naiva gamiṣyāmi I will not go, aham I, maithilīṅ Mythili, vinā without, sugrīvam Sugriva, draṣṭum to see, na ca śakṣyāmi not possible for me.

"I will not go to the city of Kishkinda from here or to Sugriva without finding Mythili. It will not be possible for me to face him.
mayyagacchati cēhasthē dharmātmānau mahārathau৷৷5.13.39৷৷

āśayā tau dhariṣyētē vānarāśca manasvinaḥ.


mayi when I, agacchati not go, ihasthē stay here, dharmātmānau righteous selves, mahārathau great warriors, tau both, āśayā with hope, dhariṣyētē both will survive, manasvinaḥ high-souled, vānarāśca vanaras also.

Both the high-souled warrior princes treading a righteous path as well as the vanaras will survive with a hope of my return if I stay back.
hastādānō mukhādānō niyatō vṛkṣamūlikaḥ৷৷5.13.40৷৷

vānaprasthō bhaviṣyāmi hyadṛṣṭvā janakātmajām.

sāgarānūpajē dēśē bahumūlaphalōdakē৷৷5.13.41৷৷


janakātmajām Janaka's daughter, adṛṣṭvā by not seeing, hastādānaḥ food available to hand, mukhādānaḥ and mouth, niyataḥ strictly, bahumūlaphalōdakē filled with fruits roots and water, sāgarānūpajē on the shore of the sea, dēśē here, vṛkṣamūlikaḥ surviving on roots of trees, vānaprasthaḥ like a hermit, bhaviṣyāmi I will be.

"If Janaki is not found I will stay here and live like a hermit subsisting on whatever is available on this sea shore, which has abundance of roots, fruits and water.
citāṅ kṛtvā pravēkṣyāmi samiddhamaraṇīsutam.

upaviṣṭasya vā samyagliṅginīṅ sādhayiṣyataḥ৷৷5.13.42৷৷

śarīraṅ bhakṣayiṣyanti vāyasāḥ śvāpadāni ca.


citām pyre, kṛtvā having made, samiddham lit, araṇīsutam fire sticks (fire), pravēkṣyāmi will enter, vā or else, upaviṣṭasya seated here, liṅginīm starving, sādhayiṣyataḥ fast unto death, śarīram body, vāyasāḥ crows, śvāpadāni ca wild beasts, bhakṣayiṣyanti will eat.

"I will prepare a pyre and enter the fire so that sea waves wash off the ashes or crows and beasts will eat up my body while i sit fasting unto death.
idaṅ maharṣibhirdṛṣṭaṅ niryāṇamiti mē matiḥ৷৷5.13.43৷৷

samyagāpaḥ pravēkṣyāmi na cētpaśyāmi jānakīm.


idam this, maharṣibhiḥ by ascetics, dṛṣṭam seen, niryāṇam ending of life, iti like this, mē my, matiḥ thought, jānakīm Janaki, na cētpaśyāmi if I am not able to see, samyak right, āpaḥ water, pravēkṣyāmi will enter.

"I shall enter water and drown myself to death if I am not able to find Janaki. I think this way of ending life has been suggested by great ascetics.
sujātamūlā subhagā kīrtimālā yaśasvinī৷৷5.13.44৷৷

prabhagnā cirarātrīyaṅ mama sītāmapaśyataḥ.


sītām Sita, apaśyataḥ I could not find, mama for me, cirarātrīyaṅ this long night, sujātamūlā started well, subhagā lovely, yaśasvinī glorious one, kīrtimālā famous one, prabhagnā is wasted.

My glory which had a good start (in the form of bringing Rama to Sugriva) and brought fortune to Sugriva and fame to me has been snapped as I could not find Sita.
tāpasō vā bhaviṣyāmi niyatō vṛkṣamūlikaḥ৷৷5.13.45৷৷

nētaḥ pratigamiṣyāmi tāmadṛṣṭvāsitēkṣaṇām.


niyataḥ strictly, vṛkṣamūlikaḥ resting under the tree, tāpasō vā or an ascetic, bhaviṣyāmi I will remain, asitēkṣaṇām black-eyed, tām her, adṛṣṭavā without seeing, itaḥ from here, na pratigamiṣyāmi I will not go back.

"I will remain an ascetic and do penance under the tree practising self-control and not go back without seeing the black-eyed Sita.
yadītaḥ pratigacchāmi sītāmanadhigamya tām৷৷5.13.46৷৷

aṅgadassaha taissarvairvānarairna bhaviṣyati.


tām her, sītām Sita, anadhigamya without finding, itaḥ from this place, pratigacchāmi yadi if I go back, sarvaiḥ by all, tai: by those, vānaraiḥ saha along with vanaras, aṅgadaḥ Angada, na bhaviṣyati will not live.

"Besides, if I go back without finding Sita all the vanaras including Angada will die.
vināśē bahavō dōṣā jīvan bhadrāṇi paśyati৷৷5.13.47৷৷

tasmātprāṇān dhariṣyāmi dhruvō jīvitasaṅgamaḥ.


vināśē by comitting suicide, bahavaḥ many, dōṣāḥ sins, jīvan by living, bhadrāṇi auspicious events, paśyati can be experienced, tasmāt therefore, prāṇān life, dhariṣyāmi I will sustain, jīvitasaṅgamaḥ only a living person, dhruvaḥ is certain

"If I commit suicide, I will earn numerous sins. By being alive, I can witness auspicious events. Therefore, I will live, for, happiness can come only to the living.
ēvaṅ bahuvidhaṅ duḥkhaṅ manasā dharāyanmuhuḥ৷৷5.13.48৷৷

nādhyagacchattadā pāraṅ śōkasya kapikuñcaraḥ.


kapikuñjaraḥ the elephant among monkeys, ēvam that way, bahuvidham in many ways, duḥkham grief, muhuḥ over and over, manasā in mind, dhārayan by holding, tadā then, śōkasya sorrow, pāram long, nādhyagacchāt did not reach of the end.

The elephant among monkeys (Hanuman) worrying over and over again, holding his head for long could not reach the end of his grief.
rāvaṇaṅ vā vadhiṣyāmi daśagrīvaṅ mahābalam৷৷5.13.49৷৷

kāmamastu hṛtā sītā pratyācīrṇaṅ bhaviṣyati.


vā or, daśagrīvam ten-headed one, mahābalam endowed with great strength, rāvaṇam Ravana, vadhiṣyāmi I will, hṛtā dead, sītā Sita, kāmam astu desire will be fulfilled, pratyācīrṇam fitting reply, bhaviṣyati will be.

"I will kill Ravana, this mighty, ten-headed demon. Sita was indeed carried away by him. This (killing him) can be a fitting reply to his evil action. My desire would be fulfilled.
athavainaṅ samutkṣipya uparyupari sāgaram৷৷5.13.50৷৷

rāmāyōpahariṣyāmi paśuṅ paśupatēriva.


athavā otherwise, ēnam him, sāgaram uparyupari over the ocean, samutkṣipya by lifting across (like a sacrificial prey), paśupatēḥ to lord Siva, paśumiva like a bull, rāmāya to Rama, upahariṣyāmi I shall offer.

"Or else, I shall carry him across the sea and put him before Rama like a bull as if he is a sacrificial prey to lord Siva."
iti cintāṅ samāpannaḥ sītāmanadhigamya tām৷৷5.13.51৷৷

dhyānaśōkaparītātmā cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ.


vānaraḥ vanara, tām her, sītām Sita, anadhigamya unable to find, iti thus, cintām worry, samāpannaḥ distressed, dhyānaśōkaparītātmā whose mind was overcome with anxiety, cintayāmāsa started thinking further.

Distressed over his inability to find Sita, Hanuman's mind was overcome with anxiety and he started thinking further.
yāvatsītāṅ hi paśyāmi rāmapatnīṅ yaśasvinīm৷৷5.13.52৷৷

tāvadētāṅ purīṅ laṅkāṅ vicinōmi punaḥ punaḥ.


rāmapatnīm Rama's wife, yaśasvinīm famed, sītām Sita, yāvat until, paśyāmi I see, tāvat till then, ētām this, laṅkāṅ purīm city of Lanka, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, vicinōmi I will keep searching.

"Till I find the virtuous Sita, wife of Rama in this Lanka, I shall keep searching everywhere again and again.
sampātivacanāccāpi rāmaṅ yadyānayāmyaham৷৷5.13.53৷৷

apaśyan rāghavō bhāryāṅ nirdhahētsarvavānarān.


sampātivacanāt on Sampati's words, aham I, rāmam Rama, ānayāmi yadi if I had brought, rāghavaḥ Raghava, bhāryām wife, apaśyan unable to see, sarvavānarān all vanaras, nirdahēt would have burnt.

"Had I brought Raghava following the words of Sampati, Rama would have burnt all vanaras unable to find his wife.
ihaiva niyatāhārō vatsyāmi niyatēndriyaḥ৷৷5.13.54৷৷

na matkṛtē vinaśyēyuḥ sarvē tē naravānarāḥ.


niyatāhāraḥ restricting food, niyatēndriyaḥ controlling senses, ihaiva here itself, vatsyāmi I will stay, matkṛtē for my fault, tē those, naravānarāḥ naras and vanaras, na vinaśyēyuḥ will not perish.

"I will stay here itself, restricting my food and controlling my senses. Let not men and monkeys perish for my fault.
aśōkavanikā cēyaṅ dṛśyatē yā mahādrumā৷৷5.13.55৷৷

imāmadhigamiṣyāmi na hīyaṅ vicitā mayā.


mahādrumā huge trees, yā such, iyam this, aśōkavanikā Ashoka grove, dṛśyatē is seen, imām there, adhigamiṣyāmi I will go, iyam here, mayā by me, na vicitā hi not looked for.

"Here is the Ashoka grove with huge trees. I will go there. I have not looked for her in this place.
vasūnrudrāṅstathā.dityānaśvinau marutō.pi ca৷৷5.13.56৷৷

namaskṛtvā gamiṣyāmi rakṣasāṅ śōkavardhanaḥ.


vasūn Vasus, rudrān Rudras, tathā likewise, ādityān Adityas, aśvinau Aswinis, marutō.pi ca Maruts also, namaskṛtvā after offering salutations, rakṣasām of demons, śōkavardhanaḥ increase grief, gamiṣyāmi will go.

"I shall offer salutations to Vasus, Rudras Adityas and Aswinis and proceed to increase (cause) the sorrow of the demons. (There are eight Vasus, eleven Rudras, twelve Adityas, two Ashwins and fortynine Wind-gods).
jitvā tu rākṣasān sarvānikṣvākukulanandinīm৷৷5.13.57৷৷

sampradāsyāmi rāmāya yathā siddhiṅ tapasvinē.


sarvān all, rākṣasān ogres, jitvā tu having conquered, ikṣvākukulanandinīm delight of Ikshvaku family, tapasvinē for the ascetic, siddhiṅ yathā an offering like, rāmāya to Rama, sampradāsyāmi I will offer.

"I will conquer all the ogres and pass them to Sita, the delight of the Ikshvaku family as an offering and give Rama to her as the fruit of her austerities."
saḥ muhūrtamiva dhyātvā cintāvagrathitēndriyaḥ৷৷5.13.58৷৷

udatiṣṭhanmahātējā hanumān mārutātmajaḥ.


mahātējāḥ brilliant, mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, saḥ hanumān Hanuman, cintāvagrathitēndriyaḥ with senses overwhelmed by worries, muhūrtamiva for a while, dhyātvā after reflecting, udatiṣṭhat got up.

The brilliant son of the Wind-god, Hanuman, whose senses were overwhelmed with worries, regained his senses in a short while and got up.
namō.stu rāmāya salakṣmaṇāya dēvyai ca tasyai janakātmajāyai.

namō.stu rudrēṅdrayamānilēbhyō namō.stu candrārkamarudgaṇēbhyaḥ৷৷5.13.59৷৷


salakṣmaṇāya along with Lakshmana, rāmāya to Rama, namaḥ salutations, astu I offer, dēvyai to the divine lady, tasyai to her, janakātmajāyai ca to Janaka's daughter, rudrēndrayamānilēbhyaḥ to Rudra, Indra, Yama and Vayu, namaḥ salutations, astu be, candrārkamarudgaṇēbhyaḥ Sun, Moon and Marutas, namaḥ salutations, astu I offer.

"My salutations to Lakshmana, Rama and divine daughter of Janaka. Salutations to Rudra, Indra, Yama and Vayu. Salutations to Sun, Moon and Maruts!"
sa tēbhyastu namaskṛtya sugrīvāya ca mārutiḥ.

diśassarvāssamālōkya hyaśōkavanikāṅ prati৷৷5.13.60৷৷


sa: mārutiḥ that son of the Wind-god, tēbhyaḥ to them, namaskṛtya having saluted, sugrīvāya ca to Sugriva, sarvāḥ all, diśaḥ quarters, samālōkya looking at, aśōkavanikām Ashoka grove, prati towards.

Having offered salutations to all gods as well as to Sugriva, he looked at all quarters and left for the Ashoka grove.
sa gatvā manasā pūrvamaśōkavanikāṅ śubhām.

uttaraṅ cintayāmāsa vānarō mārutātmajaḥ৷৷5.13.61৷৷


mārutātmajaḥ Hanuman, saḥ vānaraḥ the vanara, manasā in his mind, pūrvam earlier, śubhām auspicious, aśōkavanikām grove of Ashoka, gatvā after going, uttaram again, cintayāmāsa started thinking.

Hanuman started thinking again about his task after reaching the auspicious Ashoka grove.
dhruvaṅ tu rakṣōbahulā bhaviṣyati vanākulā.

aśōkavanikā puṇyā sarvasaṅskārasaṅskṛtā৷৷5.13.62৷৷


śōkavanikā Ashoka grove, dhruvam surely, rakṣōbahulā guarded by many demons, vanākulā with trees, sarvasaṅskārasaṅskṛtā carefully tended, puṇyā sacred, bhaviṣyati it will be.

'This Ashoka grove filled with many trees, guarded by many demons is carefully tended. It must be sacred.
rakṣiṇaścātra vihitā nūnaṅ rakṣanti pādapān.

bhagavānapi sarvātmā nātikṣōbhaṅ pravāti vai৷৷5.13.63৷৷

saṅkṣiptō.yaṅ mayā.tmā ca rāmārthē rāvaṇasya ca.


atra there, vihitāḥ posted, rakṣiṇaśca guards, pādapān trees, nūnam surely, rakṣanti they are protecting, sarvātmā all pervading, bhagavānapi divinity also, nātikṣōbham not violent, pravāti vai is blowing, mayā my, rāmārthē for Rama's sake, rāvaṇasya ca and Ravana also, ayam this, ātmā my own self, saṅkṣiptaḥ made small.

"The guards posted there are surely protecting the grove. The divinity pervading all over me (the wind) must also have been controlled as it is also not blowing violently. I have turned my body small for Rama's cause and also to save myself from Ravana.
siddhiṅ mē saṅvidhāsyanti dēvāḥ sarṣigaṇāstviha৷৷5.13.64৷৷

brahmā svayaṅbhūrbhagavān dēvāścaiva diśantu mē.

siddhimagniśca vāyuśca puruhūtaśca vajrabhṛt৷৷5.13.65৷৷

varuṇaḥ pāśahastaśca sōmādityau tathaiva ca.

aśvinau ca mahātmānau marutaḥ śarva ēva ca৷৷5.13.66৷৷

siddhiṅ sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhūtānāṅ caiva yaḥ prabhuḥ.

dāsyanti mama yē cānyē hyadṛṣṭāḥ pathi gōcarāḥ৷৷5.13.67৷৷


sarṣigaṇāḥ (sa +ṛṣigaṇā:) along with all sages, dēvāḥ gods, iha here, mē to me, siddhiṅm success, saṅvidhāsyanti will give, svayaṅbhūḥ self-born, bhagavān god, brahmā Brahma, dēvāścaiva and also gods, agniśca and Fire, vāyuśca even Wind, vajrabhṛt Indra, the wielder of thunderbolt, purūhūtaśca Indra who is invoked several times in sacrifices, pāśahastaḥ holding a rope, varuṇaśca Varuna too, tathaiva ca so also,sōmādityau Moon and Sun, mahātmānau all great, aśvinau ca twin Aswinis also, marutaḥ Maruts, śarvaḥ ēva ca lord Siva, mē to me, siddhim success, diśantu many give, sarvāṇi all, bhūtāni beings, yaḥ whoever, bhūtānām of creatures, prabhu: lord, anyē other, yē those, adṛṣṭāḥ not seen, pathi on the way, gōcarāḥ creatures moving on earth, mama to me, siddhim success, dāsyanti will ordain.

May all sages, gods, the self-born Brahma, Wind-god, Indra, the wielder of thunderbolt whose name is invoked in sacrifices, Yama, who carries a rope, Varuna give success and Lord Siva help me. May the Sun, Moon, Aswinis Marutas assist me. May the gods of the quarters and the lord of all beings help me to succeed. May those whom I could not see also bring success to me.
tadunnasaṅ pāṇḍuradantamavraṇaṅ śucismitaṅ padmapalāśalōcanam.

drakṣyē tadāryāvadanaṅ kadānvahaṅ prasannatārādhipatulyadarśanam৷৷5.13.68৷৷


unnasam with high nose, pāṇḍuradantam with white teeth, avraṇam with no wounds, śucismitam with pleasing smile, padmapalāśalōcanam eyes like lotus petals, prasannatārādhipatulyadarśanam who appears like the pleasant Moon, tat that, tadāryāvadanam beautiful face of the noble lady,
aham I, kadā when, drakṣyē nu will I see.

'Oh! when and how would I behold that beautiful noble lady of stainless character, with a Moon-like face, prominent nose, white teeth, pleasant smile and with eyes like lotus petals?
drēṇa pāpēna nṛśaṅsakarmaṇā sudāruṇālaṅkṛtavēṣadhāriṇā.

balābhibhūtā hyabalā tapasvinī kathaṅ nu mē dṛṣṭipathē.dya sā bhavēt৷৷5.13.69৷৷


kṣudrēṇa by a mean one, pāpēna by a sinner, nṛśaṅsakarmaṇā a man of cruel deeds, sudāruṇālaṅkṛtavēṣadhāriṇā endowed with a dreadful look, balābhibhūtā overpowered by force, tapasvinī a suffering lady, sā that, abalā weak, adya now, mē my, dṛṣṭipathē in the range of my view, kathaṅ how, bhavēt nu will I.

"How will I set my eyes on that gentle, frail and suffering thing now, who has been abducted by that mean, cruel sinner of dreadful look?"
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē trayōdaśassargaḥ.
Thus ends the thirteenth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
