[Hanuman sees Sita.]

sa vīkṣamāṇastatrasthō mārgamāṇaśca maithilīm.

avēkṣamāṇaśca mahīṅ sarvāṅ tāmanvavaikṣata৷৷5.15.1৷৷


saḥ he (Hanuman), tatrasthaḥ from there, vīkṣamāṇaḥ looking out, maithilīm for Mythili, mārgamāṇaḥ searching for, avēkṣamāṇaḥ looking down all around, sarvām everywhere, tāṅ mahīm that ground, anvavaikṣata surveyed.

Hanuman looked out from the simsupa tree all around for Mythili scanning the ground below.
santānakalatābhiśca pādapairupaśōbhitām.

divyagandharasōpētāṅ sarvatassamalaṅkṛtām৷৷5.15.2৷৷

tāṅ sa nandanasaṅkāśāṅ mṛgapakṣibhirāvṛtām.

harmyaprāsādasambādhāṅ kōkilākulanissvanām৷৷5.15.3৷৷

kāñcanōtpalapadmābhirvāpībhirupaśōbhitām.

bahvāsanakuthōpētāṅ bahubhūmigṛhāyutām৷৷5.15.4৷৷

sarvartukusumai ramyāṅ phalavadbhiśca pādapaiḥ.

puṣpitānāmaśōkānāṅ śriyā sūryōdayaprabhām৷৷5.15.5৷৷

pradīptāmiva tatrasthō mārutissamudaikṣata.

niṣpatraśākhāṅ vihagaiḥ kriyamāṇāmivāsakṛt৷৷5.15.6৷৷

viniṣpatadbhiḥ śataśaścitraiḥ puṣpāvataṅsakaiḥ.

āmūlapuṣpanicitairaśōkaiśśōkanāśanaiḥ৷৷5.15.7৷৷

puṣpabhārātibhāraiśca spṛśadbhiriva mēdinīm.

karṇikāraiḥ kusumitaiḥ kiṅśukaiśca supuṣpitaiḥ৷৷5.15.8৷৷


mārutiḥ Hanuman, tatrasthaḥ from there, santānakalatābhiśca creepers of Ashoka and, pādapaiḥ trees, upaśōbhitām splendid, divyagandharasōpētām enriched with fine fragrance, sarvataḥ all around, samalaṅkṛtām well decorated, nandanasaṅkāśām resembling Nandana grove of Indra, mṛgapakṣibhiḥ with animals and birds, āvṛtām surrounded, harmyaprāsādasambādhām with tall mansions, kōkilākulanissvanām filled with the warble of cuckoos, kāñcanōtpalapadmābhiḥ with golden lilies and lotuses, vāpībhiḥ with lakes, upaśōbhitām enchanting, bahvāsanakuthōpētām couches with rich coverings, bahubhūmigṛhāyutām many underground homes, sarvartukusumaiḥ trees full of blossoms of all seasons, phalavadbhiḥ fruits, pādapaiḥ with trees, ramyām delightful, puṣpitānām of the blossoms, aśōkānām of Ashoka tree, śriyā with radiance, sūryōdayaprabhām shedding the splendour of the rising Sun, pradīptāmiva as if inflamed, asakṛt often, viniṣpatadbhiḥ falling constantly, śataśaḥ in hundreds, vihagaiḥ with birds, niṣpatraśākhām branches without leaves, kriyamāṇām iva as if rendering, citraiḥ with colourful, puṣpāvataṅsakaiḥ thick with flowers serving as ear-ornaments (of the forest), āmūlapuṣpanicitaiḥ with blossoms up to the base of trees, śōkanāśanaiḥ which can remove sorrow, aśōkaiḥ with Ashoka, puṣpabhārātibhāraiśca loaded heavily with flowers, mēdinīm ground, spṛśadbhiriva as if touching, kusumitaiḥ with blossoming, karṇikāraiḥ with Karnikara flowers, supuṣpitaiḥ fully bloomed, kiṅśukaiḥ with Kimsukas, tām that spot, samudaikṣata surveyed.

Hanuman surveyed from the Simsupa tree the Ashoka grove of trees full of fine fragrance. It looked well-decorated like the Nandana garden of Indra. It teemed with animals and birds. It was filled with the voices of the cuckoos. It had tall mansions and underground chamber. There were golden lilies and lotuses in the lakes, enchanting couches with rich coverings and trees full of blossoms of all seasons and fruits in abundance With the Ashoka tree shedding showers of flowers from time to time the place shone with the splendour of Sunrise. It glittered like inflamed fire. The Ashoka tree had hundreds of colourful birds on the branches. It appeared as if it had branches without leaves which made them look like ear-ornaments (of the grove). Ashoka flowers in bloom hung down to the base of the tree as if to take away the grief of the onlookers. The blossoms of the Karnikara and kimsuka brightened the whole
grove.
sa dēśaḥ prabhayā tēṣāṅ pradīpta iva sarvataḥ.

punnāgāssaptaparṇāśca campakōddālakāstathā৷৷5.15.9৷৷

vivṛddhamūlā bahavaśśōbhantē sma supuṣpitāḥ.


tēṣām of those, prabhayā with radiance, saḥ that, dēśaḥ place, sarvataḥ all over, pradīpta iva as though inflamed, vivṛddhamūlāḥ extended its roots, supuṣpitāḥ well bloomed, punnāgāḥ punnagas, saptaparṇāśca saptaparnas and, tathā like wise, campakōddālakāḥ champaka, uddalaka, śōbhantē sma shone bright.

The grove shone bright as if it were inflamed fire with beautiful trees like purnaga, saptaparna, champak and uddalaka in full bloom.
śātakumbhanibhāḥ kēcitkēcidagniśikhōpamāḥ৷৷5.15.10৷৷

nīlāñjananibhāḥ kēcittatrāśōkāssahasraśaḥ.


tatra there, sahasraśaḥ thousands, aśōkāḥ Ashoka, kēcit some, śātakumbhanibhāḥ shone like gold, kēcit some, agniśikhōpamāḥ like the flames of fire, kēcit some, nīlāñjanibhāḥ like the black collyrium.

There were thousands of ashoka trees some of which shone like gold, others like the flames of fire and some dark as collyrium.
nandanaṅ vividhōdyānaṅ citraṅ caitrarathaṅ yathā৷৷5.15.11৷৷

ativṛttamivācintyaṅ divyaṅ ramyaṅ śriyā vṛtam.

vitīyamiva cākāśaṅ puṣpajyōtirgaṇāyutam৷৷5.15.12৷৷

puṣparatnaśataiścitraṅ dvitīyaṅ sāgaraṅ yathā.

sarvartupuṣpairnicitaṅ pādapairmadhugandhibhiḥ৷৷5.15.13৷৷

nānāninādairudyānaṅ ramyaṅ mṛgagaṇairdvijaiḥ.

anēkagandhapravahaṅ puṇyagandhaṅ manōramam৷৷5.15.14৷৷


vividhōdyānam with different types of gardens, nandanaṅ yathā like the Nandana garden of Indra, citram colourful, caitrarathaṅ yathā like the Chaitraratha garden of Kubera, ativṛttam surpassing, acintyam unimaginable, divyam divine, ramyam delightful, śriyā with luminaries, vṛtam surrounded with, puṣpajyōtirgaṇāyutam shining with the radiance of countless varieties of blossoms, dvitīyam lovely, ākāśamiva like the sky, puṣparatnaśataiḥ hundreds of gems in the form of flowers, citram wonderful, dvitīyam a second (besides the four oceans which form the boundary of the earth), sāgaram ocean (firmament), yathā likewise, sarvartupuṣpaiḥ bearing flowers of all seasons, madhugandhibhiḥ honey- scented, pādapaiḥ with trees, nicitam filled, nānāninādaiḥ with various sounds, mṛgagaṇaiḥ by flocks of tamed animals, dvijaiḥ by birds, ramyam enchanting, anēkagandhapravaham with various fragrances wafting, puṇyagandham divine fragrance, manōramam pleasing to the heart.

The grove with different types of gardens spread over looked like the Nandana garden of Indra and Chaitraratha garden of Kubera. It surpassed every other garden. It was unimaginable in splendour. It was divine and delightful filled with the radiance of countless varieties of blossoms shining like stars, like a second firmament. It was like another ocean filled with precious gems of flowers. It had trees with flowers of honey-scented fragrance. Sounds of animals and birds filled the air. It was pleasing to the heart with various divine fragrances wafted (by the breeze)৷৷
śailēndramiva gandhāḍhyaṅ dvitīyaṅ gandhamādanam.

aśōkavanikāyāṅ tu tasyāṅ vānarapuṅgavaḥ৷৷5.15.15৷৷

sa dadarśāvidūrasthaṅ caityaprāsādamucchritam.

mathyē stambhasahasrēṇa sthitaṅ kailāsapāṇḍuram৷৷5.15.16৷৷

pravālakṛtasōpānaṅ taptakāñcanavēdikam.

muṣṇantamiva cakṣūṅṣi dyōtamānamiva śriyā৷৷5.15.17৷৷

vimalaṅ prāṅśubhāvatvādullikhantamivāmbaram.


saḥ vānarapuṅgavaḥ that monkey leader, tasyām in that, aśōkavanikāyām in Ashoka grove, madhyē midst, gandhāḍhyām highly fragrant, dvitīyam another, gandhamādanamiva like mount Gandhamadana, stambhasahasrēṇa with a thousand pillars, sthitam stood by, kailāsapāṇḍuram white like mount Kailasa, pravālakṛtasōpānam having stairs paved with corals, taptakāñcanavēdikam having altars of bright molten gold, cakṣūṅṣi eyes, muṣṇantamiva as if stealing away, śriyā with brilliance, dyōtamānamiva as if shining, vimalam white, prāṅśubhāvatvāt due to its light, ambaram sky, ullikhantamiva as if scratching, avidūrastham not far from there, ucchritam tall, caityaprāsādam a big temple dadarśa saw.

The monkey leader saw a lofty temple-like structure in the midst of the Ashoka grove which was highly fragrant and appeared like another indescribable structure that stood on a thousand pillars like another Gandhamadana mountain. It gleamed white like mount Kailasa. Its stairs were paved with corals. The altars were made of brightly polished gold. This structure glowing with brilliance was as if stealing the eyes. It looked white with light and lofty as though scratching the sky.
tatō malinasaṅvītāṅ rākṣasībhissamāvṛtām৷৷5.15.18৷৷

upavāsakṛśāṅ dīnāṅ niśśvasantīṅ punaḥ punaḥ.

dadarśa śuklapakṣādau candrarēkhāmivāmalām৷৷5.15.19৷৷


tataḥ then, malinasaṅvītām clad in soiled clothes, rākṣasībhiḥ by female demons, samāvṛtām surrounded, upavāsakṛśām emaciated through fasting, dīnām a pitiable, punaḥ punaḥ repeatedly, niśśvasantīm sighing, śuklapakṣādau at the beginning of the bright fortnight, amalām white, candrarēkhāmiva like the crescent Moon, dadarśa saw.

Then he beheld a lady surrounded by female demons. Clad in soiled clothes she looked dejected, emaciated through fasting and was sighing repeatedly. She appeared thin and pale like the crescent Moon at the beginning of the bright fortnight.
mandaprakhyāyamānēna rūpēṇa ruciraprabhām.

pinaddhāṅ dhūmajālēna śikhāmiva vibhāvasōḥ৷৷5.15.20৷৷


mandaprakhyāyamānēna faintly recognisable, rūpēṇa in form, dhūmajālēna by a cluster of smoke, pinaddhām engulfed, ruciraprabhām with bright shine, vibhāvasōḥ of fire, śikhāmiva like the tip.

Her form was faintly recognisable. She had a lovely radiance on account of her beautiful form. She looked like the tip of burning fire engulfed in a cloud of smoke.
pītēnaikēna saṅvītāṅ kliṣṭēnōttamavāsasā.

sapaṅkāmanalaṅkārāṅ vipadmāmiva padminīm৷৷5.15.21৷৷


kliṣṭēna wornout body, pītēna by yellow cloth, ēkēna only one, uttamavāsasā choicest cloth, saṅvītām clad in, analaṅkārām without unadorned, sapaṅkam with dust, vipadmām devoid of lotuses, padminīmiva like a lotus pond.

She was wearing an excellent single yellow cloth which was soiled. Unadorned, she looked like a muddy lotus-pond bereft of lotuses.
vrīḍitāṅ duḥkhasantaptāṅ parimlānāṅ tapasvinīm.

grahēṇāṅgārakēṇēva pīḍitāmiva rōhiṇīm৷৷5.15.22৷৷


vrīḍitām she was bashful, duḥkhasantaptām she was tormented with agony, parimlānām withered, tapasvinīm a helpless lady, aṅgārakēṇa grahēṇa by the planet Mars, pīḍitām tormented, rōhiṇīm iva like the Rohini star.

She was bashful, tormented with agony, dejected with a withered look. She appeared like the star Rohini oppressed by planet Mars.
aśrupūrṇamukhīṅ dīnāṅ kṛśāmanaśanēna ca.

śōkadhyānaparāṅ dīnāṅ nityaṅ duḥkhaparāyaṇām৷৷5.15.23৷৷


aśrupūrṇamukhīm with her face filled with tears, dīnām dejected, anaśanēna by fasting, kṛśām shrunken, śōkadhyānaparām meditating in grief, nityam always, dīnām dejected, duḥkhaparāyaṇām overwhelmed with sorrow.

Her face was filled with tears. She looked dejected and emaciated due to fasting. Always plunged in grief, she looked like one meditating in tears.
priyaṅ janamapaśyantīṅ paśyantīṅ rākṣasīgaṇam.

svagaṇēna mṛgīṅ hīnāṅ śvagaṇābhivṛtāmiva৷৷5.15.24৷৷


priyam dear, janam relatives, apaśyantīm not seeing, rākṣasīgaṇam ogresses, paśyantīm seeing, svagaṇēna by her own kith, hīnām śvagaṇābhivṛtām surrounded by a group of hounds, mṛgīm iva like a female deer.

Unable to see her dear kith and kin, she sat guarded by ogresses. She appeared like a doe separated from the herd and encircled by a pack of hounds.
nīlanāgābhayā vēṇyā jaghanaṅ gatayaikayā.

nīlayā nīradāpāyē vanarājyā mahīmiva৷৷5.15.25৷৷

sukhārhāṅ duḥkhasantaptāṅ vyasanānāmakōvidām.


jaghanam the hips, gatayā by touching, ēkayā by only one, nīlanāgābhayā which looked like a black serpent, vēṇyā with a braid of hair, nīradāpāyē at the close of rainy season, nīlayā with a dark one, vanarājyā by a range of forest, mahīmiva like the earth, sukhārhām who deserves to be happy, duḥkhasantaptām burning in grief, vyasanānām of worries, akōvidām who had not experienced.

She (from behind) appeared like the earth covered with a range of trees at the end of rainy season with her single long black braid touching her hips looking like a black serpent. She who deserved to be happy and had not experienced worries was burning in grief. (ēkavēṇī is a trait of a prōṣitabhartṛkā Sita who was forced to stay in Lanka was a prōṣitabhartṛkā nāyikā.)
tāṅ samīkṣya viśālākṣīmadhikaṅ malināṅ kṛśām৷৷5.15.26৷৷

tarkayāmāsa sītēti kāraṇairupapādibhiḥ.


viśālākṣīm large-eyed lady, adhikam very much, malinām soiled, kṛśām thin, tām her, samīkṣya after observing, upapādibhiḥ by establishing, kāraṇaiḥ with reasons, sītēti She is Sita, tarkayāmāsa he started deliberating within himself.

After seeing the large-eyed lady worn out and dressed in soiled clothes, Hanuman started deliberating in himself and guessed it was Sita for strong reasons.
hriyamāṇā tadā tēna rakṣasā kāmarūpiṇā৷৷5.15.27৷৷

yathārūpā hi dṛṣṭā vai tathārūpēyamaṅganā.


tadā then, kāmarūpiṇā by one who can assume any form at will, tēna rakṣasā by that demon, hriyamāṇā being kidnapped, yathārūpā the same form, dṛṣṭā after seeing, iyam this, aṅganā lady, tathārūpā has the same form.

Beholding the form of the large-eyed lady, Hanuman guessed, 'This is similar to the form seen while the demon was kidnapping her'.
pūrṇacandrānanāṅ subhrūṅ cāruvṛttapayōdharām৷৷5.15.28৷৷

kurvatīṅ prabhayādēvīṅ sarvā vitimirā diśaḥ.

tāṅ nīlakēśīṅ bimbōṣṭhīṅ sumadhyāṅ supratiṣṭhitām৷৷5.15.29৷৷

sītāṅ padmapalāśākṣīṅ manmathasya ratiṅ yathā.


pūrṇacandrānanām with face like full-moon, subhrūm with shapely eyebrows, cāruvṛttapayōdharām of beautiful round breasts, sarvāḥ all, diśaḥ directions, prabhayā with radiance, vitimirāḥ bright, kurvatīm rendering, dēvīm the queen, nīlakēśīm one with dark hair, bimbōṣṭhīm lips red like Bimba fruit, sumadhyām with slender-waist, supratiṣṭhatām with pleasing limbs, padmapalāśākṣīm eyes like lotus petal, manmathasya of Kamadeva, ratiṅ yathā like Rati, sītām Sita.

Her face resembled the full-moon which dispelled the encircling gloom by its radiance. She had a slender waist, beautiful round breasts, shapely eyebrows, red lips, dark hair, and eyes like lotus petals with attractive limbs. She was comparable to Rati, consort of Cupid.
iṣṭāṅ sarvasya jagataḥ pūrṇacandraprabhāmiva৷৷5.15.30৷৷

bhūmau sutanumāsīnāṅ niyatāmiva tāpasīm.


pūrṇacandraprabhāmiva like the radiance of full-moon, sarvasya entire, jagataḥ world, iṣṭām favourite, niyatām austere, tāpasīmiva like an ascetic, bhūmau on the ground, āsīnām seated, sutanum lady with a good form.

Just as the radiance of the full moon is cherished by all, this lady was liked by every one in this world. With her lovely figure she was seated on the ground like an austere ascetic.
niḥśvāsabahulāṅ bhīruṅ bhujagēndravadhūmiva৷৷5.15.31৷৷

śōkajālēna mahatā vitatēna na rājatīm.


bhīrum a timid lady, bhujagēndravadhūmiva like the consort of the serpent lord, niḥśvāsabahulām hissing, mahatā with great, vitatēna (widely spread), śōkajālēna by a cobweb of grief, na rājatīm was gloomy.

The timid lady was hissing (sighing) like the consort of the serpent king, who being caught in a widespread cobweb of grief was looking gloomy.
saṅsaktāṅ dhūmajālēna śikhāmiva vibhāvasōḥ৷৷5.15.32৷৷

tāṅ smṛtīmiva sandigdhāmṛddhiṅ nipatitāmiva.


dhūmajālēna by a cloud of smoke, saṅsaktām obscured, vibhāvasō of fire, śikhāmiva like the flames of fire, sandigdhām blurred, smṛtīmiva like memory, nipatitām one who has fallen, ṛddhimiva like
the fortune, tām her.

She was like the flames of fire obscured by smoke. She appeared like the text of Smriti of doubtful meaning, a treasure that has been thrown away;
vihatāmiva ca śraddhāmāśāṅ pratihatāmiva৷৷5.15.33৷৷

sōpasargāṅ yathā siddhiṅ buddhiṅ sakaluṣāmiva.


vihatāmiva as if lost, śraddhām faith, āśāṅ hope, pratihatām obstructed, āśāmiva like desires, sōpasargām inhibited, siddhimiva like success, sakaluṣām vitiated, buddhimiva like the intellect.

She was like faith shattered, hope frustrated, desires blocked by obstacles, success vitiated, fame marred and intellect blurred.
abhūtēnāpavādēna kīrtiṅ nipatitāmiva৷৷5.15.34৷৷

rāmōparōdhavyathitāṅ rakṣōharaṇakarśitām.


abhūtēna with a false, apavādēna by rumour, nipatitām fallen, kīrtimiva like the fame, rāmōparōdhavyathitām was pained by the obstruction to meet Rama, rakṣōharaṇakarśitām emaciated on account of abduction.

She appeared like fame besmirched by false allegation. She was pained by the obstruction to meet Rama and emaciated by abduction.
abalāṅ mṛgaśābākṣīṅ vīkṣamāṇāṅ tatastataḥ৷৷5.15.35৷৷

bāṣpāmbuparipūrṇēna kṛṣṇavakrākṣipakṣmaṇā.

vadanēnāprasannēna niḥśvasantīṅ punaḥ punaḥ৷৷5.15.36৷৷


mṛgaśābākṣīm fawn-eyed, bāṣpāmbuparipūrṇēna eyes filled with tears, kṛṣṇavakrākṣipakṣmaṇā with her dark and curved eyelashes, aprasannēna unhappy, vadanēna with her face, tatastataḥ here and there,
vīkṣamāṇam looking, abalām lady.

The fawn-eyed lady was looking here and there with her dark, curved eyelashes. Her unhappy face was streaming with tears.
malapaṅkadharāṅ dīnāṅ maṇḍanārhāmamaṇḍitām.

prabhāṅ nakṣatrarājasya kālamēghairivāvṛtām৷৷5.15.37৷৷


malapaṅkadharām covered with dirt and mud, dīnām wretched, maṇḍanārhām one who deserved to be adorned, āmaṇḍitām not wearing any ornaments, kālamēghaiḥ with dark clouds, āvṛtām covered by, nakṣatrarājasya king of stars, prabhāmiva like the radiance.

Covered with dirt and mud and shorn of adornments even though she deserved them, she looked wretched like the radiance of the Moon muffled by dark clouds.
tasya saṅdidihē buddhirmuhuḥ sītāṅ nirīkṣya tu.

āmnāyānāmayōgēna vidyāṅ praśithilāmiva৷৷5.15.38৷৷


āmnāyānām of the great shastric-lore, ayōgēna by not practising, praśithilām slackened, vidyāmiva like the knowledge, sītām Sita, nirīkṣya having observed, tasya his, buddhistu intellect also, muhuḥ after seeing carefuly again and again, saṅdidihē doubted.

Hanuman did recognise Sita after looking at her carefully again and again even as one is able to make out knowledge of shastric-lore forgotten with lapse of time and lack of practice.
duḥkhēna bubudhē sītāṅ hanumānanalaṅkṛtām.

saṅskārēṇa yathā hīnāṅ vācamarthāntaraṅ gatām৷৷5.15.39৷৷


hanumāna Hanuman, analaṅkṛtām devoid of decoration, saṅskārēṇa by virtue of previous practice, hīnām devoid, arthāntaram changing its meaning, gatām interpreted thus, vācam yathā like the words, sītām Sita, duḥkhēna with great difficulty, bubudhē he identified.

Just as an unclear expression which has undergone certain changes in meaning due to lack of usage over a long period is understood by virtue of previous practice so also Hanuman had difficulty in recognising Sita who was devoid of any decoration.
tāṅ samīkṣaya viśālākṣīṅ rājaputrīmaninditām.

tarkayāmāsa sītēti kāraṇairupapādibhiḥ৷৷5.15.40৷৷


viśālākṣīm large-eyed lady, aninditām blameless, tāṅ rājaputrīm that princess, samīkṣya after observing, upapādibhiḥ by the right signs, kāraṇaiḥ with reasons, sītēti Sita only, tarkayāmāsa he came to conclusion after deliberation.

After close observation of different signs and deliberation with reasons he came to the conclusion that the large-eyed lady is the same blameless princess Sita.
vaidēhyā yāni cāṅgēṣu tadā rāmō.nvakīrtayat.

tānyābharaṇajālāni gātraśōbhīnyalakṣayat৷৷5.15.41৷৷

sukṛtau karṇavēṣṭau ca śvadaṅṣṭrau ca susaṅsthitau.

maṇividrumacitrāṇi hastēṣvābharaṇāni ca৷৷5.15.42৷৷

śyāmāni cirayuktatvāttathā saṅsthānavanti ca.


tadā then, rāmaḥ Rama, yāni those, ābharaṇajālāni the kind of ornaments, vaidēhyāḥ for Vaidehi, aṅgēṣu on her limbs, anvakīrtayat described, gātraśōbhīni ornaments that add beauty to the limbs, tāni those, alakṣayat observed, sukṛtau well-crafted, karṇavēṣṭau ca ear-ornaments, susaṅsthitau properly fit, śvadaṅṣṭrau ca Svadamshtras also, hastēṣu on hands, maṇividrumacitrāṇi wonderfully variegated with corals and other gems, ābharaṇāni ca ornaments also, cirayuktatvāt by being used for a long time, śyāmāni blackened, saṅsthānavanti ca with marks of the ornaments formed on the body.

Hanuman observed the ornaments worn by Vaidehi adding grace to her limbs which Rama had described.They were well-crafted ear-rings and well-fit Savdamshtras*. He
noticed wonderful, variegated ornaments of corals and gems as well as those worn on hands. They were blackened for long wear and Sita had marks of wearing them on her body.
(*Note: This is a pair ornaments shaped like dog's teeth. It is not known on which part of the body they were worn).
tānyaivētāni manyē.haṅ yāni rāmō.nvakīrtayat৷৷5.15.43৷৷

tatra yānyavahīnāni tānyahaṅ nōpalakṣayē.

yānyasyā nāvahīnāni tānīmāni na saṅśayaḥ৷৷5.15.44৷৷


tāni those, rāmaḥ Rama, yāni such of those, anvakīrtayat he described, tānyēva those only, aham I, manyē I think, tatra there, yāni those, avahīnāni dropped, tāni those, aham I, nōpalakṣayē I have not seen, asyāḥ her, yāni those, nāvahīnāni not dropped, tāni those, imāni only, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no.

"I think these ornaments are the same that were described by Rama. Those dropped (by Sita) are not found on her body. These were not dropped.There is no doubt."
pītaṅ kanakapaṭṭābhaṅ srastaṅ tadvasanaṅ śubham.

uttarīyaṅ nagāsaktaṅ tadā dṛṣṭaṅ plavaṅgamaiḥ৷৷5.15.45৷৷


pītam yellow, kanakapaṭṭābham shining like gold cloth, śubham auspicious one, uttarīyam upper garment, srastam slipped, nagāsaktam stuck to the tree, tat that, vastram garment, tadā then, plavaṅgamaiḥ by monkeys, dṛṣṭam seen.

"The shining yellow upper garment like a golden cloth was torn. Flung down, it stuck to a tree which the monkeys noticed.
bhūṣaṇāni ca mukhyāni dṛṣṭāni dharaṇītalē.

anayaivāpaviddhāni svanavanti mahānti ca৷৷5.15.46৷৷


nayaiva by her alone, dharaṇītalē on the ground, apaviddhāni thrown down, svanavanti making sound, mahānti excellent, mukhyāni choicest, bhūṣaṇāni ca and ornaments, dṛṣṭāni were seen.

"The jingling, choice ornaments were thrown down on the ground.
idaṅ ciragṛhītatvādvasanaṅ kliṣṭavattaram.

tathā.pi nūnaṅ tadvarṇaṅ tathā śrīmadyathētarat৷৷5.15.47৷৷


idam this, vasanam cloth, ciragṛhītatvāt worn long, kliṣṭavattaram crumpled, tathāpi even so, nūnam surely, tadvarṇam its colour, itarat like another fresh cloth, yathā similar, tathā so, śrīmat shining.

"This cloth worn long is crumpled. Even then it has retained its shine and looks fresh.
iyaṅ kanakavarṇāṅgī rāmasya mahiṣī priyā.

praṇaṣṭāpi satī yā.sya manasō na praṇaśyati৷৷5.15.48৷৷


kanakavarṇāṅgī with a golden complexion, iyam this lady, rāmasya Rama's, priyā beloved, mahiṣī queen, satī wife, yā she, praṇaṣṭāpi even though lost (whereabouts not known till then), asya his, manasa: in the mind, na praṇaśyati does not disappear.

"This lady of golden complexion is Rama's beloved queen who does not disappear from his mind, although away.
iyaṅ sā yatkṛtē rāmaścaturbhiḥ paritapyatē.

kāruṇyēnānṛśaṅsyēna śōkēna madanēna ca৷৷5.15.49৷৷

strī praṇaṣṭēti kāruṇyādāśritētyānṛśaṅsyataḥ.

patnī naṣṭēti śōkēna priyēti madanēna ca৷৷5.15.50৷৷


yatkṛtē for whose sake, rāmaḥ Rama, praṇaṣṭā lost, strī iti that she is a woman, kāruṇyāt with compassion, āśritēti one who sought refuge, anṛśaṅsyataḥ due to gentleness, naṣṭā lost, patnī iti this is his wife, śōkēna with sorrow, priyā iti beloved one, madanēna with passion, kāruṇyēna with compassion, ānṛśaṅsyēna with mercy, śōkēna with sorrow, madanēna with passion, caturbhiḥ with fourfold concern, paritapyatē he is suffering, sā that one is, iyam this lady.

"She is that same lady for whom Rama has been passing through compassion, benevolence, grief and passion. He is compassionate considering her a woman, kind and benevolent since she is his dependent, stricken with grief for losing a wife and passionate since she is his beloved.
asyā dēvyā yathā rūpamaṅgapratyaṅgasauṣṭhavam.

rāmasya ca yathā rūpaṅ tasyēyamasitēkṣaṇā৷৷5.15.51৷৷


asyāḥ her, dēvyāḥ of the devi, rūpam form, aṅgapratyaṅgasauṣṭhavam charming body with perfectly symmetrical limbs, yathā as such, ca and, tasya his, rūpam form, yathā as, iyam this lady, asitēkṣaṇā black-eyed .

"This black-eyed Sita and her divine, charming body with perfect limbs are a match for Rama's figure.
asyā dēvyā manastasmiṅstasya cāsyāṅ pratiṣṭhitam.

tēnēyaṅ sa ca dharmātmā muhūrtamapi jīvati৷৷5.15.52৷৷


asyāḥ her, dēvyāḥ divine queen's, manaḥ mind, tasmin in him, tasya his, asyāṅ ca in her, pratiṣṭhitam firmly fixed, tēna therefore, iyam this lady, dharmātmā the righteous self, sa ca and he, muhūrtamapi for a moment, jīvati alive.

"The divine queen's mind is firmly fixed on Rama and his mind, fixed on her. For this reason she and the righteous self (Rama) are able to survive till this moment.
duṣkaraṅ kṛtavānrāmō hīnō yadanayā prabhuḥ.

dhārayatyātmanō dēhaṅ na śōkēnāvasīdati৷৷5.15.53৷৷


prabhuḥ lord, rāmaḥ Rama, anayā with her, hīnaḥ separated, ātmanaḥ his, dēham body, dhārayati iti yat held in this way, śōkēna with grief, na avasīdati is not perishing, duṣkaram a task (difficult), kṛtavān accomplished.

"Lord Rama had accomplished a difficult task in sustaining the body this way without allowing it to sink and perish during separation from her.
duṣkaraṅ kurutē rāmō ya imāṅ mattakāśinīm.

sītāṅ vinā mahābāhurmuhūrtamapi jīvati৷৷5.15.54৷৷


yaḥ he who, imām such, mattakāśinīm a lady with intoxicating lustre, sītāṅ vinā without Sita, muhūrtamapi even for a while, jīvati survives, mahābāhuḥ strong-armed, rāmaḥ Rama, duṣkaram difficult, kurutē is doing.

"Rama, the strong-armed hero has accomplished a difficult task by surviving even for a moment without this Sita who has intoxicating lustre".
ēvaṅ sītāṅ tadā dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭaḥ pavanasambhavaḥ.

jagāma manasā rāmaṅ praśaśaṅsa ca taṅ prabhum৷৷5.15.55৷৷


pavanasambhavaḥ son of the Wind-god, tadā then, sītām Sita, dṛṣṭvā seeing, ēvam that way, hṛṣṭaḥ was glad, manasā in mind, rāmam Rama, jagāma reached, tam him, prabhum lord, praśaśaṅsa ca he praised.

On seeing Sita, the son of the Wind-god, felt glad at heart and mentally reached Rama the lord of the world. Hanuman was full of praise for Rama.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē pañcadaśassargaḥ.
Thus ends the fifteenth sarga in Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
