[Hanuman's grief over Sita's state.]

praśasya tu praśastavyāṅ sītāṅ tāṅ haripuṅgavaḥ.

guṇābhirāmaṅ rāmaṅ ca punaścintāparō.bhavat৷৷5.16.1৷৷


haripuṅgavaḥ monkey leader (Hanuman), praśastavyām laudable lady, tām her, sītām Sita, praśasya admired, guṇābhirāmam embellished with virtues, rāmaṅ ca and Rama, punaḥ again, cintāparaḥ to lament, abhavat began.

Hanuman, the bull among monkeys, admired the laudable Sita and the virtuous Rama and once again began to lament.
sa muhūrtamiva dhyātvā bāṣpaparyākulēkṣaṇaḥ.

sītāmāśritya tējasvī hanūmānvilalāpa ha৷৷5.16.2৷৷


tējasvī sagacious, saḥ he, hanumān Hanuman, muhūrtamiva for a short while, dhyātvā after thinking, bāṣpaparyākulēkṣaṇaḥ eyes dimmed with tears, sītām Sita, āśritya at the plight of, vilalāpa ha lamented.

Sagacious Hanuman, eyes dimmed with tears, thought for a short while on the plight of Sita and lamented
mānyā guruvinītasya lakṣmaṇasya gurupriyā.

yadi sītā৷৷pi duḥkhārtā kālō hi duratikramaḥ৷৷5.16.3৷৷


guruvinītasya well-trained, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, mānyā worshipped, gurupriyā loved by elders, sītāpi Sita too, duḥkhārtā yadi if she is also worried like this, kālaḥ time, duratikramaḥ hi difficult to transgress.

"If Sita, who is worshipped by righteous Lakshmana and loved by Rama is tortured like this, it shows it is difficult to trangress the force of time.
rāmasya vyavasāyajñā lakṣmaṇasya ca dhīmataḥ.

nātyarthaṅ kṣubhyatē dēvī gaṅgēva jaladāgamē৷৷5.16.4৷৷


rāmasya Rama's, dhīmataḥ prowess, lakṣmaṇasya ca and Lakshmana's, vyavasāyajñā might, dēvī queen, jaladāgamē by seeing the clouds, gaṅgēva like Ganga, atyartham exceedingly, na kṣubhyatē is not agitated.

"Just as river Ganga is not agitated by the rain-bearing clouds, this Sita is not perturbed as she is aware of the prowess of Rama and might of Lakshmana.
tulyaśīlavayōvṛttāṅ tulyābhijanalakṣaṇām.

rāghavō৷৷rhati vaidēhīṅ taṅ cēyamasitēkṣaṇā৷৷5.16.5৷৷


tulyaśīlavayōvṛttām perfect match in character, age and behaviour, tulyābhijanalakṣaṇām perfect match in in birth and auspicious marks, vaidēhīm with Vaidehi, rāghavaḥ Raghva, arhati a right person, iyam this lady, asitēkṣaṇā black-eyed one, tam him, arhati deserves.

"Sri Rama matches Vaidehi perfectly in character, age, behaviour, birth and auspicious signs. She is aware that he is the right person for her. Rama deserves Vaidehi and this black-eyed lady deserves him."
tāṅ dṛṣṭvā navahēmābhāṅ lōkakāntāmiva śriyam.

jagāma manasā rāmaṅ vacanaṅ cēdamabravīt৷৷5.16.6৷৷


navahēmābhām a lady shining like the fresh gold, śriyamiva glory, lōkakāntām dear to the whole world, tām her, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, manasā mentally, rāmam Rama, jagāma he reached, idam thise, vacanaṅ ca words, abravīt said.

On seeing her glowing like fresh gold resembling goddess Lakshmi who is dear to the
entire world, and thinking of Rama, Hanuman said:
asyā hētōrviśālākṣyā hatō vālī mahābalaḥ.

rāvaṇapratimō vīryē kabandhaśca nipātitaḥ৷৷5.16.7৷৷


viśālākṣyāḥ large-eyed one, asyāḥ hētōḥ for her sake, mahābalaḥ powerful, vālī Vali, hataḥ was killed, vīryē in heroism, rāvaṇapratimaḥ comparable to Ravana, kabandhaśca even Kabandha, nipātitaḥ is killed.

"It was for the sake of this large-eyed Sita that the powerful Vali and the heroic Kabandha who was equal to Ravana in heroism were killed.
virādhaśca hataḥ saṅkhyē rākṣasō bhīmavikramaḥ.

vanē rāmēṇa vikramya mahēndrēṇēva śambaraḥ৷৷5.16.8৷৷


vanē in the forest, saṅkhyē in a war, rāmēṇa by Rama, vikramya by advancing with valour, mahēndrēṇa by Indra, śambaraḥ Sambara , iva like, bhīmavikramaḥ a hero of fearsome valour, virādhaḥ Viradha, hataḥ slayed.

"Rama killed Viradha of fearsome valour in the forest like Sambara by Indra.
caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasāṅ bhīmakarmaṇām.

nihatāni janasthānē śarairagniśikhōpamaiḥ৷৷5.16.9৷৷


janasthānē at Janasthana, agniśikhōpamaiḥ equal to flames of fire, śaraiḥ with arrows, bhīmakarmaṇām warriors of fierce valour, rakṣasām of demons, caturdaśa fourteen, sahasrāṇi thousand, nihatāni were killed.

kharaśca nihatasaṅkhyē triśirāśca nipātitaḥ.

dūṣaṇaśca mahātējā rāmēṇa viditātmanā৷৷5.16.10৷৷


viditātmanā by one who knows the self, rāmēṇa by Rama, saṅkhyē in a battle, kharaśca Khara, nihataḥ destroyed, triśirāśca and Trisira, nipātitaḥ was killed, mahātējāḥ highly powerful, dūṣaṇaśca Dooshana also.

"Ogres like Khara and Trisira and the powerful Dooshana were kileed in battle by Rama endowed with self-knowledge.
aiśvaryaṅ vānarāṇāṅ ca durlabhaṅ vālipālitam.

asyā nimittē sugrīvaḥ prāptavān lōkasatkṛtam৷৷5.16.11৷৷


asyāḥ nimittē on account of her, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, vālipālitam ruled by Vali, durlabham difficult to obtain, lōkasatkṛtam retained supremacy in the world, vānarāṇām of vanaras, aiśvaryam prosperity, prāptavān obtained.

On her account Sugriva obtained the coveted kingdom ruled by Vali which was a difficult proposition, and retained supremacy in the world.
sāgaraśca mayā krāntaśśrīmānnadanadīpatiḥ.

asyā hētōrviśālākṣyāḥ purī cēyamavēkṣitā৷৷5.16.12৷৷


viśālākṣyāḥ large-eyed lady, asyāḥ hētōḥ on her account, mayā by me, nadanadīpatiḥ lord of rivers and rivulets, sāgaraśca ocean also, krāntaḥ crossed, iyam this, purī ca and city, avēkṣitā surveyed.

"On account of the large-eyed Sita I ventured to cross the lord of rivers, the sea, and came to this city.
yadi rāmaḥ samudrāntāṅ mēdinīṅ parivartayēt.

asyāḥ kṛtē jagaccāpi yuktamityēva mē matiḥ৷৷5.16.13৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, asyāḥ kṛtē on account of her, samudrāntām stretching to the ocean, mēdinīm land, jagaccāpi or even the whole world, parivartayēdyadi if he turns upside down, yuktamityēva that is justified only, mē to me, matiḥ strikes my mind.

"Even if Rama turns this land stretching to the ocean upside down or even the entire world on account of her, it is justifiable, according to me.
rājyaṅ vā triṣu lōkēṣu sītā vā janakātmajā.

trailōkyarājyaṅ sakalaṅ sītāyā nāpnuyātkalām৷৷5.16.14৷৷


triṣu in the three, lōkēṣu in worlds, rājyaṅ vā or kingdom, janakātmajā Janaka's daughter, sītā vā for Sita, sakalam everything, trailōkyarājyam all the three worlds, sītāyāḥ or Sita's, kalām one sixteenth part, nāpnuyāt not equal.

"The sovereignty over the three worlds will weigh less than one sixteenth part of Janaka's daughter, Sita.
iyaṅ sā dharmaśīlasya maithilasya mahātmanaḥ.

sutā janakarājasya sītā bhartṛdṛḍhavratā৷৷5.16.15৷৷

utthitā mēdinīṅ bhittvā kṣētrē halamukhakṣatē.

padmarēṇunibhaiḥ kīrṇā śubhaiḥ kēdārapāmsubhiḥ৷৷5.16.16৷৷


iyam this lady, kṣētrē in the field, halamukhakṣatē tilled by plough, padmarēṇunibhaiḥ resembling the pollen dust of lotus, śubhaiḥ by the auspicious, kēdārapāmsubhiḥ with dust particles of paddy, kīrṇā covered, mēdinīm land, bhittvā breaking, utthitā risen up, dharmaśīlasya of the righteous, mahātmanaḥ great self, maithilasya of Mithila, janakarājasya king Janaka's, sutā daughter, bhartṛdṛḍhavratā a lady of unswerving devotion to her husband, sā that, sītā Sita.

She had risen from the land when tilled by the plough and was covered with auspicious paddy dust resembling the pollen grains of lotuses, this daughter of
Janaka, the great righteous ruler of Mithila, This lady with unswerving devotion to her husband.
vikrāntasyāryaśīlasya saṅyugēṣnvivartinaḥ.

snuṣā daśarathasyaiṣā jyēṣṭhā rājñō yaśasvinī৷৷5.16.17৷৷


vikrāntasya of the valiant, āryaśīlasya of a man of noble conduct, saṅyugēṣu in battles, anivartinaḥ of a person who never returned, rājñaḥ king's, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, yaśaśvinī celebrated lady, jyēṣṭhā eldest, snuṣā daughter-in law, ēṣā she is.

"This celebrated lady is the eldest daughter-in-law of the noble, valiant king Dasaratha who never returned from the battle-ground without being victorious.
dharmajñasya kṛtajñasya rāmasya viditātmanaḥ.

iyaṅ sā dayitā bhāryā rākṣasīvaśamāgatā৷৷5.16.18৷৷


dharmajñasya who is righteous, kṛtajñasya of the grateful, viditātmanaḥ of one armed with self-knowledge, rāmasya Rama's, dayitā dear, bhāryā wife, iyam she is, rākṣasīvaśam under the control of the demonesses, āgatā has fallen.

"She is the loving wife of the righteous, grateful, wise and self-realised Rama. She has fallen into the hands of these she-demons.
sarvān bhōgānparityajya bhartṛsnēhabalātkṛtā.

acintayitvā duḥkhāni praviṣṭā nirjanaṅ vanam৷৷5.16.19৷৷

saṅtuṣṭā phalamūlēna bhartṛśuśrūṣaṇē ratā.

yā parāṅ bhajatē prītiṅ vanē৷৷pi bhavanē yathā৷৷5.16.20৷৷

sēyaṅ kanakavarṇāṅgī nityaṅ susmitabhāṣiṇī.

sahatē yātanāmētāmanarthānāmabhāginī৷৷5.16.21৷৷


yā she who, sarvān all kinds, bhōgān luxuries, parityajya given up, bhartṛsnēhabalātkṛtā inspired by immense love towards her husband, duḥkhāni sorrows, acintayitvā not caring for, nirjanam desolate, vanam woods, praviṣṭā entered, phalamūlēna by fruits and roots, saṅtuṣṭā contented, bhartṛśuśrūṣaṇē by serving her husband, ratā engaged, vanē৷৷pi even in the woods, bhavanē yathā as if she lived in the palace, parām supreme, prītim happiness, bhajatē she experiences, kanakavarṇāṅgī a lady of golden complexion, anarthānām of calamities, abhāginī a lady who had not experienced earlier, sā iyam this lady, ētām such, yātanām torture, sahatē tolerating.

"On account of her immense love towards her husband she has given up all kinds of luxuries, not caring for suffering. She was satisfied with fruits and roots in the desolate forest. Engaged in serving her husband, she experienced utmost joy as in her own palace. A lady of golden complexion who had not experienced suffering earlier is subjected to sorrow and is tolerating calamities in this way
imāṅ tu śīlasampannāṅ draṣṭumarhati rāghavaḥ.

rāvaṇēna pramathitāṅ prapāmiva pipāsitaḥ৷৷5.16.22৷৷


rāghavaḥ Raghava, śīlasampannām a highly virtuous lady, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, pramathitām tormented, imām her, pipāsitaḥ a thirsty man, prapāmiva like the source of water, draṣṭum to see, arhati he deserves.

"Rama deserves to see her.Just as a thirsty man longs for the source of water, Rama pines for this highly virtuous lady who is tormented by Ravana.
asyā nūnaṅ punarlābhādrāghavaḥ prītimēṣyati.

rājā rājyaparibhraṣṭaḥ punaḥ prāpyēva mēdinīm৷৷5.16.23৷৷


rāghavaḥ Raghava, punaḥ again, asyāḥ her, lābhāt by finding her, rājyaparibhraṣṭaḥ exiled from the kingdom, rājā king, mēdinīm land, punaḥ again, prāpyēva as if gained back, nūnam surely, prītim happiness, ēṣyati he will get.

"Just as a king who had lost his kingdom feels happy on regaining it, surely Raghava will feel exhilarated when he gets her back.
kāmabhōgaiḥ parityaktā hīnā bandhujanēna ca.

dhārayatyātmanō dēhaṅ tatsamāgamakāṅkṣiṇī৷৷5.16.24৷৷


kāmabhōgaiḥ with sensual pleasures, parityaktā deprived, bandhujanēna ca and also with relatives, hīnā she is separated, tatsamāgamakāṅkṣiṇī one who is eagerly waiting to meet them, dēham body, dhārayati she is holding.

Deprived of all sensual pleasures, and separated from her relatives, she is surviving with the hope of meeting them.
naiṣā paśyati rākṣasyō nēmānpuṣpaphaladrumān.

ēkasthahṛdayā nūnaṅ rāmamēvānupaśyati৷৷5.16.25৷৷


ēṣā this lady, rākṣasyaḥ at the she-demons, na paśyati she is not looking, imān these, puṣpaphaladrumān trees full of flowers and fruits, na not seeing, ēkasthahṛdayā with single-minded attention, rāmamēva only Rama, anupaśyati thinking, nūnam surely.

She is looking at neither the she-demons nor these trees full of flowers and fruits. She is surely thinking of Rama with a single-minded attention.
bhartā nāma paraṅ nāryā bhūṣaṇaṅ bhūṣaṇādapi.

ēṣā tu rahitā tēna bhūṣaṇārhā na śōbhatē৷৷5.16.26৷৷


bhartā nāma husband, indeed, nāryāḥ for a lady, bhūṣaṇādapi more than ornaments, param supreme, bhūṣaṇam ornament, bhūṣaṇārhā who though deserve ornaments, ēṣā tu she on her part, tēna with him, rahitā separated, na śōbhatē does not look nice

"Indeed, the husband is the greatest ornament for a married woman. Hence though deserving adornment she does not like it, bereft of her husband who is her only
ornament.
duṣkaraṅ kurutē rāmō hīnō yadanayā prabhuḥ.

dhārayatyātmanō dēhaṅ na duḥkhēnāvasīdati৷৷5.16.27৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, anayā with her, hīnaḥ separated, ātmanaḥ his own, dēham body, dhārayati iti yat sustains like, duḥkhēna with sorrow, nāvasīdati iti yat that he is not despondent, prabhuḥ lord, duṣkaram difficult task, kurutē performs.

"Lord Rama indeed performs a difficult task in surviving without her. That he is not feeling despondent is a wonder.
imāmasitakēśāntāṅ śatapatranibhēkṣaṇām.

sukhārhāṅ duḥkhitāṅ dṛṣṭvā mamāpi vyathitaṅ manaḥ৷৷5.16.28৷৷


asitakēśāntām one who has dark hair, śatapatranibhēkṣaṇām endowed with eyes resembling a hundred-petalled lotus, sukhārhām she deserves to be happy, imām her, duḥkhitām sorrowful lady, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, mama my, manaḥ api mind also, vyathitam is worried.

Sita who is endowed with beautiful dark hair and eyes like a hundred-petalled lotus, who deserves to be happy is in sorrow. I grieve to see her in this state.
kṣatikṣamā puṣkarasannibhākṣī yā rakṣitā rāghavalakṣmaṇābhyām.

sā rākṣasībhirvikṛtēkṣaṇābhiḥ saṅrakṣyatē samprati vṛkṣamūlē৷৷5.16.29৷৷


kṣitikṣamā tolerant like the earth, puṣkarasannibhākṣī lotus-eyed lady, yā she who, rāghavalakṣmaṇābhyām both by Raghava and Lakshmana, rakṣitā was protected, sā that lady, vikṛtēkṣaṇābhiḥ by women who have hideous appearance, rākṣasībhiḥ by ogresses, samprati presently, vṛkṣamūlē under a tree, saṅrakṣyatē she is guarded.

She who has beautiful eyes like lotus petals, was protected by the arms of both Rama and Lakshmna, who is tolerant like the earth and is guarded by the female demons of
hideous appearance under a tree.
himahatanalinīva naṣṭaśōbhā vyasanaparamparayā nipīḍyamānā.

sahacararahitēva cakravākī janakasutā kṛpaṇāṅ daśāṅ prapannā৷৷5.16.30৷৷


himahatanalinīva like the lotus afflicted by snow, naṣṭaśōbhā devoid of charm, vyasanaparamparayā by continuous experience of sorrow, nipīḍyamānā afflicted, janakasutā daughter of Janaka, sahacara rahitā away from her companion, cakravākīva like the female Chakravaka, kṛpaṇām pitiable, daśām state, prapannā has landed.

"Deprived of her charm, she resembles a lotus-creeper blasted by frost. This daughter of Janaka has reached a pitiable condition afflicted by series of calamities. She resembles a famale Chakravaka separated from her mate.
asyā hi puṣpāvanatāgraśākhāḥ śōkaṅ dṛḍhaṅ vai janayantyaśōkāḥ.

himavyapāyēna ca śītaraśmi rabhyutthitō naikasahasraraśmi:৷৷5.16.31৷৷


puṣpāvanatāgraśākhāḥ with topmost branches bent down by the heaviness of blossoms, aśōkāḥ Ashoka trees, asyāḥ her, dṛḍham firmly, śōkam sorrow, janayanti are creating, himavyapāyēna by the onset of spring, abhyutthitaḥ risen, naikasahasraraśmi: thousand-rayed (Sun), śītaraśmi: ca the Moon.

"The top branches of Ashoka trees bent down with blossoms and the Moon rising with thousands of cool rays at the end of winter (when spring sets in) beholding which she should be delighted intensfy her sorrow."
ityēvamarthaṅ kapiranvavēkṣya sītēyamityēva niviṣṭabuddhi:.

saṅśritya tasminniṣasāda vṛkṣē balī harīṇāmṛṣabhastarasvī৷৷5.16.32৷৷


balī strong, harīṇām of monkeys, ṛṣabhaḥ bull, tarasvī swift-footed, kapiḥ monkey, ityēvam in this way, artham his object, anvavēkṣya after considering, iyam this, sītā is Sita, ityēva thus only, niviṣṭabuddhi: reflecting in his mind, tasmin on that, vṛkṣē tree, saṅśritya taken refuge,
niṣasāda sat.

Hanuman, the swift-footed bull among monkeys, on his part waiting on the Simsupa tree thus reflecting concluded in his mind that she was Sita.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē ṣōḍaśassargaḥ.
Thus ends the sixteenth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
