[Ravana appeals to Sita -- asks the demon guards to change her mind -- gives ultimatum to Sita]

sītāyā vacanaṅ śrutvā paruṣaṅ rākṣasādhipaḥ.

pratyuvāca tataḥ sītāṅ vipriyaṅ priyadarśanām৷৷5.22.1৷৷


rākṣasādhipaḥ lord of demons, paruṣam sharp, sītāyāḥ of Sita, vacanam words, śrutvā on hearing, tataḥ then, priyadarśanam is pleasing to see, vipriyam unpleasant, sītām to Sita, pratyuvāca replied.

Hearing the sharp words of pleasing Sita, the lord of demons replied in unpleasant terms:
yathā yathā sāntvayitā vaśyaḥ strīṇāṅ tathā tathā.

yathā yathā priyaṅ vaktā paribhūtastathā tathā৷৷5.22.2৷৷


strīṇām among women, yathā yathā more and more, sāntvayitā is courteous, tathā tathā so much so, vaśyaḥ a passionate one, yathā yathā more and more, priyam dear, vaktā speaks, tathā tathā so much, paribhūtaḥ will be humiliated.

"The more the lover is courteous and loving and pleasing to women the more he is humiliated by them.
sanniyacchati mē krōdhaṅ tvayi kāmaḥ samutthitaḥ.

dravatō.mārgamāsādya hayāniva susārathiḥ৷৷5.22.3৷৷


tvayi in you, samutthitaḥ arisen, kāmaḥ passion, susārathiḥ good charioteer, amārgam wrong path, āsādya taking, dravataḥ speeding, hayāniva like the horses, mē my, krōdham anger, sanniyacchati restrained.

"My love for you has restrained my anger, just as a good charioteer controls the horses galloping on a wrong path.
vāmaḥ kāmō manuṣyāṇāṅ yasmin kila nibadhyatē.

janē tasmiṅstvanukrōśaḥ snēhaśca kila jāyatē৷৷5.22.4৷৷


manuṣyāṇām in men, kāmaḥ passion, vāmaḥ partial, yasmin in whom, janē people, nibadhyatē bound, tasmin in him, anukrōśaḥ compassion, snēhaśca friendship, jāyatē kila even though punishable.

"Love is partial. It gets bound to those in whomsoever compassion and friendship is generated, even though they are punishable.
ētasmātkāraṇānna tvāṅ ghātayāmi varānanē.

vadhārhāmavamānārhāṅ mithyāpravrajitē ratām৷৷5.22.5৷৷


varānanē O beautiful lady!, ētasmāt on this, kāraṇāt account, vadhārhām deserve to be killed, avamānārhām deserves to be put to shame, mithyāpravrajitē in a pseudo-ascetic life, ratām engaged, tvām you, na ghātayāmi will not kill.

"O beautiful one! it is on this account that I do not kill you even though you deserve to be killed and insulted (for the words used), even as you are engaged in a pseudo-ascetic life.
paruṣāṇīha vākyāni yāni yāni bravīṣi mām.

tēṣu tēṣu vadhō yuktastava maithili dāruṇaḥ৷৷5.22.6৷৷


maithili Mythili, iha here, mām me, yāni yāni whatever, paruṣāṇi piercing, vākyāni statements, bravīṣi spoke, tēṣu tēṣu for each one, tava your, dāruṇaḥ dreadful, vadha killing, yuktaḥ is right.

"O Mythili! for each of the piercing statements made you deserve dreadful death."
ēvamuktvā tu vaidēhīṅ rāvaṇō rākṣasādhipaḥ.

krōdhasaṅrambhasaṅyuktaḥ sītāmuttaramabravīt৷৷5.22.7৷৷


rākṣasādhipaḥ lord of demons, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, vaidēhīm to Vaidehi, ēvam in that way, uktvā having spoken, krōdhasaṅrambhasaṅyuktaḥ stirred up with anger and exitement, sītām to Sita, uttaram in reply, abravīt said.

Ravana, the lord of demons, said these words in reply to Vaidehi who was overcome with anger and exitement.
dvau māsau rakṣitavyau mē yō.vadhistē mayā kṛtaḥ.

tataḥ śayanamārōha mama tvaṅ varavarṇini৷৷5.22.8৷৷


mayā by me, tē to you, yaḥ that, avadhiḥ deadline, kṛta: fixed, dvau two, māsau months, mē to me, rakṣitavyau keep, varavarṇini of beautiful hue, tataḥ thereafter, mama my, śayanam bed, ārōha come to share.

"I shall wait for two months, the deadline fixed. O lady of beautiful hue! thereafter you have to share my bed.
ūrdhvaṅ dvābhyāṅ tu māsābhyāṅ bhartāraṅ māmanicchatīm.

mama tvāṅ prātarāśārthamālabhantē mahānasē৷৷5.22.9৷৷


dvābhyām those two, māsābhyām two months, ūrdhvam after that, mām me, bhartāram as husband, anicchatīm reluctant, tvām you, mama my, prātarāśārtham for breakfast, mahānasē to the kitchen, ālabhantē cook you.

"If you are still reluctant to accept me as your husband after two months you will be sent to kitchen to be cooked as morning breakfast for me".
tāṅ tarjyamānāṅ samprēkṣya rākṣasēndrēṇa jānakīm.

dēvagandharvakanyāstā viṣēdurvikṛtēkṣaṇāḥ৷৷5.22.10৷৷


rākṣasēndrēṇa by the demon king, tarjyamānām threatened, tāṅ jānakīm that Janaki, samprēkṣya observing, tāḥ those, dēvagandharvakanyāḥ daughters of gods and gandharvas, vikṛtēkṣaṇāḥ distressed eyes, viṣēduḥ wept sadly.

Observing Janaki, threatened by the demon king the daughters of gods and gandharvas shed tears with distressful eyes.
ōṣṭhaprakārairaparā vaktranētraistathāparāḥ.

sītāmāśvāsayāmāsustarjitāṅ tēna rakṣasā৷৷5.22.11৷৷


tēna by that, rakṣasā demon, tarjitām threatened, tām her, sītām Sita, aparāḥ some of them, ōṣṭhaprakāraiḥ with movement of lips, tathā likewise, aparāḥ still others, vaktranētraiḥ with movement of eyes and faces, āśvāsayāmāsuḥ consoled her.

When Sita was threatened by the demon king, the daughters of gods and gandharvas there consoled her through gestures of their lips and eyes.
tābhirāśvāsitā sītā rāvaṇaṅ rākṣasādhipam.

uvācātmahitaṅ vākyaṅ vṛttaśauṇḍīryagarvitam৷৷5.22.12৷৷


tābhiḥ by them (the women), āśvāsitā having been consoled, sītā Sita, vṛttaśauṇḍīryagarvitam proud of the power of her virtues, ātmahitam in self-defence, vākyam words, rākṣasādhipam to the demon king, rāvaṇam to Ravana, uvāca said.

Having thus been consoled, Sita, proud of the power of her virtues, said this to Ravana in self-defence:
nūnaṅ na tē janaḥ kaścidasti niḥśrēyasē sthita:.

nivārayati yō na tvāṅ karmaṇō.smādvigarhitāt৷৷5.22.13৷৷


yaḥ whoever, tvām you, vigarhitāt reproached, asmāt from this, karmaṇaḥ action, nivārayati prevents, tē your, niḥśrēyasē who is interested in your welfare, rataḥ remain, janaḥ people, kaścit some, nāsti destroyed, nūnam surely.

"Obviously there is no one among your people keen on your welfare since nobody is preventing you from this reproachable act.
māṅ hi dharmātmanaḥ patnīṅ śacīmiva śacīpatēḥ.

tvadanyastriṣu lōkēṣu prārthayēnmanasāpi kaḥ৷৷5.22.14৷৷


śacīpatēḥ Sachi's husband, Indra, śacīmiva like Sachi, dharmātmanaḥ righteous self (Rama), patnīm wife, mām me, triṣu lōkēṣu in the three worlds, tvadanyaḥ none, kaḥ what, manasāpi even in mind, prārthayēt would seek.

"Who in all the three worlds other than you would, even in mind, seek this consort of the righteous self (Sri Rama) like Sachi to Indra? .
rākṣasādhama rāmasya bhāryāmamitatējasaḥ.

uktavānasi yatpāpaṅ kva gatastasya mōkṣyasē৷৷5.22.15৷৷


rākṣasādhama stupid demon, amitatējasaḥ of undimmed brilliance, rāmasya Rama's, bhāryām wife, yat such, pāpam sin, uktavān spoke, asi you are, tasya its, kva where, gataḥ gone, mōkṣyasē will you escape.

"O stupid demon where can you go to escape the consequences of your sinful words spoken against Rama's consort of undimmed brilliance?
yathā dṛptaśca mātaṅgaḥ śaśaśca saddṛśō yudhi.

tathā mātaṅgavadrāmastvaṅ nīca: śaśavat smṛtaḥ৷৷5.22.16৷৷


yudhi in war, saddṛśa: similar, dṛptaḥ arrogant, mātaṅga: elephant, śaśa:ca and a rabbit, yathā as, tathā
in the same way, nīca: mean, rāmaḥ Rama, mātaṅgavadrāma: like the proud elephant, tvam you, śaśavat rabbit, smṛtaḥ as spoken by people.

"It is like a proud elephant fighting in war with a rabbit. Rama is like an elephant and you are like an ordinary rabbit people speak of.
sa tvamikṣvākunāthaṅ vai kṣipanniha na lajjasē.

cakṣuṣōrviṣayaṅ tasya na tāvadupagacchasi৷৷5.22.17৷৷


saḥ such, tvam you, iha here, ikṣvākunātham king of the Ikshvakus, kṣipan looking down, na lajjasē you are not ashamed, tasya this, cakṣuṣōrviṣayaṅ within his sight, tāvat until then, na upagacchasi not yet caught

"You are not ashamed of belittling Rama in his absence. You have not yet walked into his sight.
imē tē nayanē krūrē virūpē kṛṣṇapiṅgalē.

kṣitau na patitē kasmānmāmanārya nirīkṣitaḥ৷৷5.22.18৷৷


anārya ignoble wretch, mām me, nirīkṣataḥ while looking at, tē your, krūrē cruel, virūpē uncouth, kṛṣṇapiṅgalē dark brown colour, imē these, nayanē two eyes, kṣitau on the ground, kasmāt why, na patitē not dropping down?

"O ignoble wretch! I wonder why your dark brown, distorted eyes do not fall off (the socket) when you look at me (lustfully).
tasya dharmātmanaḥ patnīṅ snuṣāṅ daśarathasya ca.

kathaṅ vyāharatō māṅ tē na jihvā vyavaśīryatē৷৷5.22.19৷৷


dharmātmanaḥ righteous, tasya his, patnīm wife, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, snuṣāṅ ca daughter-in-law also, mām me, vyāharataḥ while you speak, tē you, jihvā tongue, katham how is it, na vyavaśīryatē not snap and fall down on the ground?

"Why does not your tongue drop down while you speak such words against this consort of the righteous king (Rama) and daughter-in law of Dasaratha?
asandēśāttu rāmasya tapasaścānupālanāt.

na tvāṅ kurmi daśagrīva bhasma bharmārha tējasā৷৷5.22.20৷৷


bhasmārha fit to be reduced to ashes, daśagrīva O ten-necked one, rāmasya Rama's, asandēśāt not received permission, tapasaḥ penance, anupālanāt due to observing, tējasā with my power, tvām you, bhasma ashes, na kurmi I am not making.

"O Ravana! I can reduce you to ashes through the fire of my chastity. But I do not have Rama's permission and I want to preserve my power of ascetism even though you are fit to be consigned to the flames.
nāpahartumahaṅ śakyā tvayā rāmasya dhīmataḥ.

vidhistava vadhārthāya vihitō nātra saṅśayaḥ৷৷5.22.21৷৷


dhīmataḥ of a wise one, rāmasya Rama's, aham I am, tvayā by you, apahartum to abduct, na śakyā it is not possible, tava your, vadhārthāya for your ruin, vidhiḥ providence, vihitaḥ ordained, atra here, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no.

"When I was with wise Rama, it was not possible for you to abduct me. No doubt Providence has ordained this to bring about your death.
śūrēṇa dhanadabhrātrā balaiḥ samuditēna ca.

apōhya rāmaṅ kasmāddhi dāracauryaṅ tvayā kṛtam৷৷5.22.22৷৷


śūrēṇa by a warrior, dhanadabhrātrā by brother of Kubera, balaiḥ with forces, samuditēna ca endowed with, tvayā you, rāmam Rama, apōhya by-passing him, kasmāt for what reason, dāracauryam stealing of other's wife, kṛtam is committed.

"You are a (great) warrior and a brother of Kubera. You possess an army. Then why did you abduct Rama's wife by-passing him?"
sītāyā vacanaṅ śrutvā rāvaṇō rākṣasādhipaḥ.

vivṛtya nayanē krūrē jānakīmanvavaikṣata৷৷5.22.23৷৷


rākṣasādhipaḥ lord of demons, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, sītāyāḥ Sita's, vacanam words, śrutvā on hearing, krūrē cruel ones, nayanē eyes, vivṛtya turning them dreadfully, jānakīm at Janaki, anvavaikṣata looked at.

On hearing Janaki, the lord of demons, Ravana looked at her with his cruel eyes opened wide and rolling.
nīlajīmūtasaṅkāśō mahābhujaśirōdharaḥ.

siṅhasattvagatiḥ śrīmān dīpta jihvāgralōcanaḥ৷৷5.22.24৷৷


nīlajīmūtasaṅkāśaḥ looked like a mass of dark cloud, mahābhujaśirōdharaḥ who had strong arms and neck, siṅhasattvagatiḥ gait like a lion, śrīmān prosperous, dīptajihvāgralōcanaḥ with blazing eyes and tongue.

Prosperous Ravana looked like a mass of dark cloud, with strong arms, stout neck, gait of a lion, a blazing tongue and burning eyes;
calāgramakuṭaprāṅśuścitramālyānulēpanaḥ.

raktamālyāmbaradhara tatsaṅgadavibhūṣaṇaḥ৷৷5.22.25৷৷


calāgramakuṭaprāṅśuḥ tall with unsteady crown, citramālyānulēpanaḥ with wonderful garlands and smeared with unguents, raktamālyāmbaradharaḥ adorned with red flower garlands and clothes, tatsaṅgadavibhūṣaṇaḥ wearing shining ornamental armlets.

He appeared taller with an unsteady crown. He was wearing wonderful red flower garlands and clothes and was smeared with unguents, shining in ornamental armlets.
śrōṇisūtrēṇa mahatā mēcakēna susaṅvṛtaḥ.

amṛtōtpādanaddhēna bhujagēnēva mandaraḥ৷৷5.22.26৷৷


amṛtōtpādanaddhēna waist band tied at the time of churning the milk-ocean for nectar, bhujagēna like serpent, mandaraḥ iva like Mandara mountain, mahatā with huge, mēcakēna a dark coloured, śrōṇisūtrēṇa by a thread around his hips, susaṅvṛtaḥ well-wrapped.

Wrapped well with a big black thread around his hips, he appeared like mount Mandara encompassed by a black serpent at the time of churning the milk-ocean for nectar.
tābhyāṅ sa paripūrṇābhyāṅ bhujābhyāṅ rākṣasēśvaraḥ.

śuśubhē.calasaṅkāśaḥ śṛṅgābhyāmiva mandaraḥ৷৷5.22.27৷৷


acalasaṅkāśaḥ looked like a mountain, rākṣasēśvaraḥ lord of demons, paripūrṇābhyām with full, tābhyām both of them, bhujābhyām with two arms, śṛṅgābhyām with two peaks, mandaraḥ iva like the Mandara, saḥ he, śuśubhē shone.

The lord of demons shone like mount Mandara, both his long two arms like two mountain peaks.
taruṇādityavarṇābhyāṅ kuṇḍalābhyāṅ vibhūṣitaḥ.

raktapallavapuṣpābhyāmaśōkābhyāmivācalaḥ৷৷5.22.28৷৷


taruṇādityavarṇābhyām of the colour of the rising Sun, kuṇḍalābhyām with ear-rings, vibhūṣitaḥ adorned, raktapallavapuṣpābhyām having red leaves and flowers, aśōkābhyām with two Ashoka trees, acalaḥ iva like a mountain.

He stood like a mountain with two Ashoka trees clothed with red leaves and flowers in the form of ear-rings of the colour of the rising Sun.
sa kalpavṛkṣapratimō vasanta iva mūrtimān.

śmaśānacaityapratimō bhūṣitō.pi bhayaṅkaraḥ৷৷5.22.29৷৷


kalpavṛkṣapratimaḥ resembling the wish-yielding tree in heaven, saḥ he, mūrtimān a personification, vasantaḥ iva like the spring season, śmaśānacaityapratimaḥ resembled a memorial structure built on the cremation ground, bhūṣitō.pi though adorned with jewels, bhayaṅkaraḥ fierceful appearance.

He was comparable to the wish-fulfilling tree grown in heaven, a personified spring season and a memorial structure raised on the cremation ground. He looked frightening even though well-adorned.
avēkṣamāṇō vaidēhīṅ kōpasaṅraktalōcanaḥ.

uvāca rāvaṇaḥ sītāṅ bhujaṅga iva niḥśvasan৷৷5.22.30৷৷


kōpasaṅraktalōcanaḥ eyes red with anger, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, avēkṣamāṇaḥ looking at, bhujaṅgaḥ iva like a serpent, niḥśvasan breathing heavily, sītām to Sita, uvāca said.

Looking at Vaidehi, eyes red with anger, and breathing heavily like a histing snake, Ravana replied:
anayēnābhisampannamarthahīnamanuvratē.

nāśayāmyahamadya tvāṅ sūryaḥ sandhyāmivaujasā৷৷5.22.31৷৷


anayēna with a wrong policy, abhisampannam endowed, arthahīnam meaningless, anuvratē a lady following a vow of chastity, adya now, aham I, tvām you, sūryaḥ Sun, ōjasā with his bright light, sandhyāmiva like the morning twilight, nāśayāmi dispel.

"O Sita! you are following a vow of chastity and treading a meaningless, wrong path. I will destroy you as the Sun dispels the morning twilight with his lustre".
ityuktvā maithilīṅ rājā rāvaṇaḥ śatrurāvaṇaḥ.

sandidēśa tataḥ sarvā rākṣasīrghōradarśanāḥ৷৷5.22.32৷৷


rājā king, śatrurāvaṇaḥ who torments enemies with his terrific voice, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, maithilīm to Mythili, iti thus, uktvā having spoken, tataḥ then, ghōradarśanāḥ women of fierceful looks, sarvāḥ all, rākṣasīḥ she-demons, sandidēśa commanded.

King Ravana, a tormentor of enemies, having thus threatened Mythili commanded the she-demons women of fiecrceful appearance as follows:
ēkākṣīmēkakarṇāṅ ca karṇaprāvaraṇāṅ tathā.

gōkarṇīṅ hastikarṇīṅ ca lambakarṇīmakarṇikām৷৷5.22.33৷৷

hastipādyaśvapādyau ca gōpādīṅ pādacūlikām.

ēkākṣīmēkapādīṅ ca pṛthupādīmapādikām৷৷5.22.34৷৷

atimātraśirōgrīvāmatimātrakucōdarīm.

atimātrāsyanētrāṅ ca dīrghajihvāmajihvikām৷৷5.22.35৷৷

anāsikāṅ siṅhamukhīṅ gōmukhīṅ sūkarīmukhīm.


ēkākṣīm one-eyed, ēkakarṇāṅ ca with one year, tathā similarly, karṇaprāvaraṇām whose ear was covered, gōkarṇīm who had cow's ears, hastikarṇīṅ ca who had ears like those of an elephant, lambakarṇīm one who had long ears, akarṇikām who had no ears, hastipādyaśvapādyau ca one with the feet of an elephant and another with the hoofs of the horse, gōpādīm with cow's hoof, pādacūlikām one with hair on feet, ēkākṣīm one-eyed one, ēkapādīṅ ca with one foot, pṛthupādīm one with broad feet, apādikām who had no feet, atimātrāśirōgrīvām with a huge neck and head, atimātrākucōdarīm of large breasts and belly, atimātrāsyanētrāṅ ca with big face and eyes, dīrghajihvām with long tongue, ajihvikām with no tongue, anāsikām noseless, siṅhamukhīm with a lion face, gōmukhīm with the face of a cow, sūkarīmukhīm a boar faced ogress.

Of them one had one eye, the other one ear, another with ears covered, one had the ear of a cow, another had ears of an elephant and yet another, long, hanging ears. One had the feet of an elephant, another, hoofs of a horse and still another of a cow. While one had a single foot, another had broad feet and yet another no feet at all. One had a long neck and a large head. One had large breasts and belly. One had a big face and eyes, another had a long tongue and yet another no tongue at all. One had no nose and still another had a lion face and yet another the face of a cow.
yathā madvaśagā sītā kṣipraṅ bhavati jānakī৷৷5.22.36৷৷

tathā kuruta rākṣasyaḥ sarvāḥ kṣipraṅ samētya ca.


rākṣasyaḥ O rakshasa women, jānakī Janaki, sītā Sita, kṣipram quickly, yathā in a manner, madvaśagā submits to me, bhavati you do, tathā in that way, sarvāḥ all of you, kṣipram at once, samētya ca jointly, kuruta you may try.

"O demonesses, all of you jointly dispose Janaki towards me. See that she submits to me at once.
pratilōmānulōmaiśca sāmadānādibhēdanaiḥ৷৷5.22.37৷৷

āvarjayata vaidēhīṅ daṇḍasyōdyamanēna ca.


pratilōmānulōmaiśca adopting means favourable or contrary to her will, sāmadānādibhēdanaiḥ by gentle or conciliatory, deceptive or coercive means, daṇḍasya or punishment, udyamanēna ca by adopting, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, āvarjayata attract her attention towards me.

"By adopting means favourable or contrary to her will or through persuasion or coercion or through reward or punishment, draw Vaidehi's mind towards me." (said Ravana).
iti pratisamādiśya rākṣasēndraḥ punaḥ punaḥ৷৷5.22.38৷৷

kāmamanyuparītātmā jānakīṅ paryatarjayat.


rākṣasēndraḥ demon king, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, iti thus, pratisamādiśya repeated his instruction, kāmamanyuparītātmā burning with passion and anger, jānakīm Janaki, paryatarjayat threatened by pointing his finger at her

The demon king repeatedly commanded the ogresses burning in anger and passion and threatened Sita again and again, pointing his finger at her.
upagamya tataḥ śīghraṅ rākṣasī dhānyamālinī৷৷5.22.39৷৷

pariṣvajya daśagrīvamidaṅ vacanamabravīt.


tataḥ then, dhānyamālinī Dhanyamalini, rākṣasī she-demon, śīghram quickly, upagamya having approached, daśagrīvam ten-necked Ravana, pariṣvajya having embraced, idam this, vacanam word, abravīt spoke.

An ogress called Dhanyamalini at once approached the ten-headed Ravana and embracing him, said:.
mayā krīḍa mahārāja sītayā kiṅ tavānayā৷৷5.22.40৷৷

vivarṇayā kṛpaṇayā mānuṣyā rākṣasēśvara.


mahārāja O king!, mayā with me, krīḍa you may sport, rākṣasēśvara lord of demons, vivarṇayā pale, kṛpaṇayā with a wretched, mānuṣyā with human, anayā with her, sītayā with Sita, tava to you, kim what for.

"O king of demons, sport with me, my lord. What purpose will be served with this pale wretched Sita, a human being after all?
nūnamasyā mahārāja na divyān bhōgasattamān৷৷5.22.41৷৷

vidadhātyamaraśrēṣṭhastava bāhubalārjitān.


mahārāja O king, amaraśrēṣṭha: foremost of the immortals, tava your, bāhubalārjitān earned by the strength of your arms, divyān divine, bhōgasattamān luxuries, asyāḥ by her, na vidadhāti not
given , nūnam surely

"O king! surely she is not ordained by Brahma, the foremost among the immortals to enjoy the luxuries earned by the strength of your arms.
akāmāṅ kāmayānasya śarīramupatapyatē৷৷5.22.42৷৷

icchantīṅ kāmayānasya prītirbhavati śōbhanā.


akāmām a woman devoid of desire, kāmayānasya of a man who desires, śarīram body, upatapyatē only is tormented, icchantīm a lady who desires, kāmayānasya one who is desiring, śōbhanā is enjoyable, prītiḥ pleasure bhavati becomes

ēvamuktastu rākṣasyā samutkṣiptastatō balī৷৷5.22.43৷৷

prahasanmēghasaṅkāśō rākṣasaḥ sa nyavartata.


rākṣasyā by the demon, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having been addressed, balī powerful, mēghasaṅkāśaḥ appearing like a cloud, saḥ he, rākṣasaḥ demon, tataḥ then, samutkṣiptaḥ turned away, prahasan laughing heartily, nyavartata went back.

Having heard her words, the demon king who resembled a fierce dark cloud turned away, laughing heartily.
prasthitaḥ sa daśagrīvaḥ kampayanniva mēdinīm৷৷5.22.44৷৷

jvaladbhāskaravarṇābhaṅ pravivēśa nivēśanam.


saḥ he, daśagrīvaḥ ten-necked, mēdinīm the ground, kampayanniva as if shaking, prasthitaḥ departed, jvaladbhāskaravarṇābham blazing like the glow of the mid-day sun, nivēśanam residence, pravivēśa entered.

Thereupon the ten-necked demon departed, as if he was shaking the earth and entered his residence which was shining like the blazing mid-day Sun.
dēvagandharvakanyāśca nāgakanyāśca sarvataḥ৷৷5.22.45৷৷

parivārya daśagrīvaṅ viviśustaṅ gṛhōttamam.


dēvagandharvakanyāśca daughters of gods and gandharvas, nāgakanyāśca and daughters of nagas, sarvataḥ from all over, daśagrīvam Ravana, parivārya having sorrounded, tam him, gṛhōttamam excellent home, viviśuḥ entered.

Then the daughters of gods, gandharvas and nagas gathered round and followed him into his excellent palace.
sa maithilīṅ dharmaparāmavasthitāṅ prapēpamānāṅ paribhartsya rāvaṇaḥ.

vihāya sītāṅ madanēna mōhitaḥ svamēva vēśma pravivēśa bhāsvaram৷৷5.22.46৷৷


saḥ he, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, dharmaparām woman treading the righteous path, avasthitām steadfast, pravēpamānām trembling in fear, maithilīm Mythili, paribhartsya having abused, sītām Sita, vihāya leaving, madanēna mōhitaḥ overpowered with passion, bhāsvaram glittering, svam his, vēśmaiva dwelling, pravivēśa entered.

Having derided Mythili trembling in fear yet steadfast in treading the righteous path, Ravana, overpowered with passion left her and entered his glittering mansion.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē dvāviṅśassargaḥ.
Thus ends twentysecond sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
