[The ogresses chide Sita who resolutely condemned Ravana.]

tataḥ sītāmupāgamya rākṣasyō vikṛtānanāḥ.

paruṣaṅ paruṣā nārya ūcustāṅ vākyamapriyam৷৷5.24.1৷৷


tataḥ then, paruṣāḥ harsh, vikṛtānanāḥ hideous, rākṣasyaḥ nāryaḥ ogresses, tāṅ sītām that Sita, upāgamya having approached, apriyam unbecoming, vākyam words, paruṣam harshly, ūcuḥ uttered.

Then the hideous ogresses approached Sita and spoke these harsh words in an unbecoming manner:
kiṅ tvamantaḥpurē sītē sarvabhūtamanōharē.

mahārhaśayanōpētē na vāsamanumanyasē৷৷5.24.2৷৷


sītē O Sita, tvam yourself, sarvabhūtamanōharē delightful for all, mahārhaśayanōpētē furnished with fine bedsteads, antaḥpurē in the women's chambers, vāsam residence, kim why, nānumanyasē not willing?

'O Sita! why don't you agree to dwell in Ravana's inner apartment furnished with fine bedsteads, and which is delightful?
mānuṣī mānuṣasyaiva bhāryātvaṅ bahumanyasē.

pratyāhara manō rāmānna tvaṅ jātu bhaviṣyasi৷৷5.24.3৷৷


mānuṣī being a woman, mānuṣasyaiva of a man only, bhāryātvam being wife, bahumanyasē you are holding this in high esteem, rāmāt from Rama, manaḥ mind, pratyahara you may turn, tvam you, jātu indeed, na bhaviṣyasi will not live.

'You are a woman, wife of Rama, an ordinary mortal you are holding in high esteem. Withdraw your mind from Rama or else you will not survive.
trailōkyavasubhōktāraṅ rāvaṇaṅ rākṣasēśvaram.

bhartāramupasaṅgamya viharasva yathāsukham৷৷5.24.4৷৷


trailōkyavasubhōktāram enjoy the wealth of the three worlds, rākṣasēśvaram demon king, rāvaṇam Ravana, bhartāram as husband, upasaṅgamya after uniting yourself, yathāsukham pleasure, viharasva sport with him.

mānuṣī mānuṣaṅ taṅ tu rāmamicchasi śōbhanē.

rājyādbhrraṣṭamasiddhārthaṅ viklabaṅ tvamaninditē৷৷5.24.5৷৷


śōbhanē O charming lady!, aninditē blameless one, mānuṣī a woman, tvaṅ tu you too, rājyāt from the kingdom, bhraṣṭam dethroned, asiddhārtham one who is not successful, viklabam distressed, mānuṣam human, taṅ him, rāmam Rama only, icchasi wanting.

'O charming lady! you have an irreproachable beauty and grace. Why do you think of human Rama only who has been dethroned from the kingdom. He is only a human being who is unsuccessful and distressful.'
rākṣasīnāṅ vacaḥ śrutvā sītā padmanibhēkṣaṇā.

nētrābhyāmaśrupūrṇābhyāmidaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷5.24.6৷৷


padmanibhēkṣaṇā a lady with eyes like lotus petals, sītā Sita, rākṣasīnām of the ogresses, vacaḥ words, śrutvā on hearing, aśrupūrṇābhyām those filled with tears, nētrābhyām with both eyes, idam this way, vacanam words, abravīt spoke.

Hearing the words of the ogresses, Sita with eyes like lotus petals full of tears replied
this way:
yadidaṅ lōkavidviṣṭamudāharatha saṅgatāḥ.

naitanmanasi vākyaṅ mē kilbiṣaṅ pratibhāti vaḥ৷৷5.24.7৷৷


saṅgatāḥ joined together, lōkavidviṣṭam not acceptable to the world, yat such, idam this, mē my, vākyam words, udāharatha you spoke, ētat this way, vaḥ addressed by you, manasi in mind, kilbiṣam sinful, na pratibhāti not thought.

na mānuṣī rākṣasasya bhāryā bhavitumarhati.

kāmaṅ khādata māṅ sarvā na kariṣyāmi vō vacaḥ৷৷5.24.8৷৷


mānuṣī a human being, rākṣasasya ogre's, bhāryā wife, bhavitum to become, na arhati ought not to be, sarvāḥ all of you, kāmam freely, mām me, khādata eat, vaḥ addressed by you, vacaḥ words, na kariṣyāmi I will not do.

dīnō vā rājyahīnō vā yō mē bhartā sa mē guruḥ.

taṅ nityamanuraktāsmi yathā sūryaṅ suvarcalā৷৷5.24.9৷৷


dīnō vā a dejected one, rājyahīnō vā a king who lost his kingdom, yaḥ he who, mē my, bhartā husband, saḥ he, mē my, guruḥ lord, suvarcalā Suvarchala, sūryaṅ yathā just as to Sun-god, nityam ever, tam him, anuraktā devoted, asmi I am.

'Dejected or dethroned from the kingdom, Rama is my lawful husband. I will ever remain devoted to Rama as Suvarchala, wife of the Sun-god is to him.
yathā śacī mahābhāgā śakraṅ samupatiṣṭhati.

arundhatī vasiṣṭhaṅ ca rōhiṇī śaśinaṅ yathā৷৷5.24.10৷৷

lōpāmudrā yathāgastyaṅ sukanyā cyavanaṅ yathā.

sāvitrī satyavantaṅ ca kapilaṅ śrīmatī yathā৷৷5.24.11৷৷

saudāsaṅ madayantīva kēśinī sagaraṅ yathā.

naiṣadhaṅ damayantīva bhaimī patimanuvratā৷৷5.24.12৷৷

tathā.hamikṣvākuvaraṅ rāmaṅ patimanuvratā.


mahābhāgā noble, śacī Sachi, yathā like, śakram Indra, samupatiṣṭhati is steadfadt, arundhatī Arundhati, vasiṣṭhaṅ ca with Vasistha, rōhiṇī Rohini, śaśinam the moon, yathā likewise, lōpāmudrā Lopamudra, agastyam with Agastya, yathā similarly, sukanyā Sukanya, cyavanam Chayavanam, yathā so also, sāvitrī Savitri, satyavantam with Satyavan, śrīmatī Srimati, kapilam with Kapilamuni, yathā so also, saudāsam Soudasa, madayantīva Madayanti, kēśinī Kesini, sagaraṅ yathā with Sagara likewise, patim as husband, naiṣadham Nala, king of Naishada, anuvratā devoted, bhaimī Bhima's daughter, damayantīva like Damayanti, tathā in the same way, aham I, ikṣvākuvaram foremost of Ikshvaku family, patim a husband, rāmam Rama, anuvratā I am devoted.

'I am steadfast (in love) to my husband Rama, the foremost of the Ikshvaku family in the same manner as noble Sachi to Indra, Arundhati to Vasistha, Rohini to the Moon, Lopamudra to Agastya, Sukanya to sage Chyavana, Savitri to Satyavan, Srimati to Kapilamuni Madayanti to Soudasu, Kesini to king Sagara and Bhima's daughter Damayanti to her lord Nala, (the king of Nishadas)'.
sītāyā vacanaṅ śrutvā rākṣasyaḥ krōdhamūrchitāḥ৷৷5.24.13৷৷

bhartsayanti sma paruṣairvākyai rāvaṇacōditāḥ.


rāvaṇacōditāḥ ordered by Ravana, rākṣasyaḥ by the ogresses, sītāyāḥ Sita's, vacanam words, śrutvā after hearing, krōdhamūrchitāḥ overtaken by anger, paruṣaiḥ with harsh, vākyaiḥ with statements,
bhartsayanti sma threatened.

Hearing the reply of Sita, the ogresses ordered by Ravana and overtaken by anger again began to threaten Sita using harsh words.
avalīnaḥ sa nirvākyō hanūmān śiṅśupādrumē৷৷5.24.14৷৷

yasītāṅ santarjayantīstā rākṣasīraśṛṇōt kapiḥ.


kapiḥ monkey, sa: he, hanumān Hanuman, nirvākyaḥ speechless, śiṅśupādrumē Simsupa tree, avalīnaḥ kept concealed, sītām Sita, santarjayantīḥ listened threatening, tāḥ those, rākṣasīḥ ogresses, aśṛṇōt listened.

Hanuman who kept himself concealed on the simsupa tree speechlessly listened to the ogresses threatening Sita.
tāmabhikramya saṅkṛddhā vēpamānāṅ samantataḥ৷৷5.24.15৷৷

bhṛśaṅ saṅlilihurdīptān pralambān daśanacchadān.


vēpamānām trembling in fear, tām her, samantataḥ from all around, abhikramya approaching, saṅkṛddhāḥ enraged, dīptān glowing, pralambān hanging, daśanacchadān lips, bhṛśam again and again, saṅlilihuḥ were licking.

Sita was trembling in fear. The enraged ogresses went on licking their lips hanging, again and again.
ūcuśca paramakruddhāḥ pragṛhyāśu paraśvadhān৷৷5.24.16৷৷

nēyamarhati bhartāraṅ rāvaṇaṅ rākṣasādhipam.


paramakruddhāḥ very angry women, āśu immediately, paraśvadhān axes, pragṛhya taking up, ūcuśca spoke, iyam this, rākṣasādhipam to the demon king, rāvaṇam Ravana, bhartāram as husband, nārhati not fit to be.

The enraged ogresses immediately picked up the axes and rose up saying, 'she is unfit to have the demon king, Ravana as her husband'.
sā bhartsyamānā bhīmābhī rākṣasībhirvarānanā৷৷5.24.17৷৷

sabāṣpamapa sarpantī śiṅśupāṅ tāmupāgamat.


bhīmābhiḥ rākṣasībhiḥ by fierce ogresses, bhartsyamānā threatened, sā she, varānanā charming one, sabāṣpam with tears, apasarpantī moved away, tām that, śiṅśupām Simsupa, upāgamat reached.

As the charming Sita was threatened by the fierce ogresses, she moved towards the simsupa tree with eyes full of tears.
tatastāṅ śiṅśupāṅ sītā rākṣasībhiḥ samāvṛtā৷৷5.24.18৷৷

abhigamya viśālākṣī tasthau śōkapariplutā.


tataḥ then, viśālākṣī large-eyed one, sītā Sita, tāṅ śiṅśupām that Simsupa, abhigamya having reached, rākṣasībhiḥ by the ogresses, samāvṛtā surrounded, śōkapariplutā drowned in sorrow, tasthau stayed.

Then the large-eyed Sita, drowned in sorrow surrounded by the ogresses went near the simsupa tree and stood there.
tāṅ kṛśāṅ dīnavadanāṅ malināmbaradhāriṇīm৷৷5.24.19৷৷

bhartsayāñcakrirē sītāṅ rākṣasyastāṅ samantataḥ.


tāḥ the, rākṣasyaḥ ogresses, kṛśām shrunken, dīnavadanām dejected face, malināmbaradhāriṇīm clad in soiled clothes, tāṅ sītām that Sita, samantataḥ surrounded, bhartsayāñcakrirē started abusing.

The ogresses started intimidating Sita who was dressed in soiled clothes and emaciated with a dejected look on her face.
tatastāṅ vinatā nāma rākṣasī bhīmadarśanā৷৷5.24.20৷৷

abravītkupitākārā karālā nirṇatōdarī.


tataḥ then, bhīmadarśanā of terrifying looks, kupitākārā of loathsome appearance, karālā a dark one, nirṇatōdarī with a large sunken belly, vinatānāma called Vinata, rākṣasī ogress, tām her, abravīt said.

Then a dark ogress called Vinata with a terryfying look, loathsome appearance and a large sunken belly said to Sita:
sītē paryāptamētāvadbhartuḥ snēhō nidarśitaḥ৷৷5.24.21৷৷

sarvātrātikṛtaṅ bhadrē vyasanāyōpakalpatē


sītē O Sita, bhartuḥ your husband, snēhaḥ love, nidarśitaḥ is shown, ētāvat to this extent, paryāptam it is enough, bhadrē auspicious lady, sarvatra everywhere, atikṛtam excess, vyasanāya to adversity, upakalpatē leads.

'O Sita! you have shown your love for your husband to this extent. It is enough. O auspicious lady! anything carried to excess leads to adversity.
parituṣṭāsmi bhadraṅ tē mānuṣastē kṛtō vidhiḥ৷৷5.24.22৷৷

mamāpi tu vacaḥ pathyaṅ bruvantyāḥ kuru maithili.


maithili O Mythili, parituṣṭā beseech, asmi I am, tē your, mānuṣaḥ human, vidhiḥ duty, kṛtaḥ is done, tē to you, bhadram be happy, bruvantyāḥ mama my, pathyam wishing-well, vaca:words, api also, kuru follow.

"O Mythili! I beseech you (to oblige Ravana). You have discharged your duty as a human being. Be happy. But you should also heed my advice which is, after all, salutary.
rāvaṇaṅ bhaja bhartāraṅ bhartāraṅ sarvarakṣasām৷৷5.24.23৷৷

vikrāntaṅ rūpavantaṅ ca surēśamiva vāsavam.

dakṣiṇaṅ tyāgaśīlaṅ ca sarvasya priyadarśanam৷৷5.24.24৷৷


sarvarakṣasām of all ogres, bhartāram lord vikrāntam courageous, rūpavantaṅ ca handsome too, surēśam the lord of gods, vāsavamiva like Indra, dakṣiṇam a generous one, tyāgaśīlaṅ ca sacrificing, sarvasya of all, priyadarśanam pleasing in appearance, rāvaṇam Ravana, bhartāram as husband, bhaja accept.

mānuṣaṅ kṛpaṇaṅ rāmaṅ tyaktvā, rāvaṇamāśraya.

divyāṅgarāgā vaidēhi divyābharaṇabhūṣitā৷৷5.24.25৷৷

adyaprabhṛti sarvēṣāṅ lōkānāmīśvarī bhava.


mānuṣam a human, kṛpaṇam helpless, rāmam Rama, tyaktvā leave, rāvaṇam Ravana, āśraya seek refuge, vaidēhi Vaidehi, divyāṅgarāgā have heavenly unguents, divyābharaṇabhūṣitā wearing imposing ornaments, adyaprabhṛti from today, sarvēṣām for all, lōkānām people, īśvarī queen,bhava you become

'Leave the helpless human Rama and seek Ravana's refuge. O Vaidehi, using the heavenly unguents and adorned with imposing ornaments from now on, be the queen of all people.
agnēḥ svāhā yathā dēvī śacī vēndrasya śōbhanē৷৷5.24.26৷৷

kiṅ tē rāmēṇa vaidēhi kṛpaṇēna gatāyuṣā.


śōbhanē O beautiful one, agnēḥ for fire, dēvī queen, svāhā yathā like Swaha, indrasya Indra's, śacīva like Sachi, vaidēhi Vaidehi, kṛpaṇēna a pitiable, gatāyuṣā whose life span is to end soon, rāmēṇa with Rama, kim what is the use?

'O beautiful Sita! Just like Swaha, queen to the Fire-god and Sachi to Indra, accept
Ravana. Why are you still thinking of Rama who is helpless and whose life span is coming to an end soon.
ētaduktaṅ ca mē vākyaṅ yadi tvaṅ na kariṣyasi৷৷5.24.27৷৷

asminmuhūrtē sarvāstvāṅ bhakṣayiṣyāmahē vayam.


uktam spoken, mē my, ētat this, vākyam word, tvam you, na kariṣyasi you do not accept, yadi if, vayam we, sarvāḥ all of us, asmin at this, muhūrtē moment, tvām you, bhakṣayiṣyāmahē we will eat you.

'If you do not heed our words of advice, all of us will eat you at this very moment.'
anyā tu vikaṭā nāma lambamānapayōdharā৷৷5.24.28৷৷

abravītkupitā sītāṅ muṣṭimudyamya garjatī.


lambamānapayōdharā lady with hanging breasts, vikaṭānāma called Vikata, anyā tu another woman also, muṣṭim fist, udyamya raised, kupitā angry one, garjatī roaring, sītām at Sita, abravīt she said.

Now Vikata another ogress with hanging breasts raised her fist up in anger and roared at Sita.
bahūnyapriyarūpāṇi vacanāni sudurmatē৷৷5.24.29৷৷

anukrōśānmṛdutvācca sōḍhāni tava maithili.


sudurmatē O wicked, maithili Mythili, apriyarūpāṇi of unpleasant, bahūni many, tava your vacanāni words, anukrōśāt out of kindness, mṛdutvācca of and due to mildness, sōḍhāni are put up with.

'O wicked Mythili! we have tolerated many unpleasant words uttered by you due to our kindness and mildness৷৷
na ca naḥ kuruṣē vākyaṅ hitaṅ kālapuraskṛtam৷৷5.24.30৷৷

ānītāsi samudrasya pāramanyairdurāsadam.

rāvaṇāntaḥpuraṅ ghōraṅ praviṣṭā cāsi maithili৷৷5.24.31৷৷


maithili Mythili, kālapuraskṛtam timely, hitam wishing you well, naḥ our, vākyam word, na kuruṣē ca you do not accept, anyaiḥ by others, durāsadam not approachable, samudrasya ocean's, pāram to the shore, ānītā brought, asi you are, ghōram dreadful, rāvaṇāntaḥpuram Ravana's inner chambers, praviṣṭā entered, asi you are.

'O Mythili! you have heeded not our good and timely advice tendered in your interest. You have been brought to the other shore of the ocean and to the inner chambers of Ravana which is very difficult for others to access.
rāvaṇasya gṛhē ruddhāmasmābhistu surakṣitām.

na tvāṅ śaktaḥ paritrātumapi sākṣātpurandaraḥ৷৷5.24.32৷৷


rāvaṇasya Ravana's, gṛhē in home, ruddhām arrested, asmābhiḥ by us, surakṣitām very well guarded, tvām you, paritrātum to rescue, sākṣāt even if, purandaraḥ api even the destroyer of citadels, (Indra) also, na śaktaḥ not able.

'You are in Ravana's house, well-guarded by us. It is not possible even for Indra, destroyer of citadels, to come to your rescue (let alone Rama).
kuruṣva hitavādinyā vacanaṅ mama maithili.

alamaśruprapātēna tyaja śōkamanarthakam৷৷5.24.33৷৷


maithili Mythili, hitavādinyāḥ of a well-wisher, mama my, vacanam word, kuruṣva you may heed, aśruprapātēna by shedding tears, alam enough, anarthakam useless, śōkam sorrow, tyaja give up.

'Mythili, act according to our advice. I am your well-wisher. Give up sorrow and stop shedding useless tears.
bhaja prītiṅ ca harṣaṅ ca tyajaitāṅ nityadainyatām.

sītē rākṣasarājēna saha krīḍa yathāsukham৷৷5.24.34৷৷


sītē O Sita, prītiṅ ca and love, harṣaṅ ca happiness, bhaja adopt, ētām this, nityadainyatām being dejected always, tyaja give up, rākṣasarājēna saha along with the demon king, yathāsukham as you please, krīḍa you enjoy.

'O Sita! offer your love to Ravana, adore him and be happy. Give up this continuous dejection. Enjoy all pleasures along with the king of demons.
jānāsi hi yathā bhīru strīṇāṅ yauvanamadhruvam.

yāvanna tē vyatikrāmēttāvatsukhamavāpnuhi৷৷5.24.35৷৷


bhīru O timid lady, strīṇām for women, yauvanam youth, yathā since, adhruvam not stable, jānāsi hi you know, tē you, yāvat until, na vyatikrāmēt before it is over, tāvat sukham till then all pleasures, avāpnuhi enjoy.

'O timid Sita! know that youth of women is fleeting and transient. Before it is over, enjoy all kinds of pleasures.
udyānāni ca ramyāṇi parvatōpavanāni ca.

saha rākṣasarājēna cara tvaṅ madirēkṣaṇē৷৷5.24.36৷৷


madirēkṣaṇē O lady of intoxicating eyes, tvam you, rākṣasarājēna with the demon king, ramyāṇi delightful, udyānāni gardens, parvatōpavanāni and gardens surrounding mountain ranges, cara range

'O lady of intoxicating eyes! range in the company of the demon king, the delightful gardens and mountain ranges filled with gardens.
strī sahasrāṇi tē sapta vaśē sthāsyanti sundari.

rāvaṇaṅ bhaja bhartāraṅ bhartāraṅ sarvarakṣasām৷৷5.24.37৷৷


sundari O beautiful one, sapta seven, strī sahasrāṇi a thousand women, tē your, vaśē under your control, sthāsyanti will remain, sarvarakṣasām for all the ogres, bhartāram lord, rāvaṇam Ravana, bhartāram as your husband, bhaja accept.

'O beautiful Sita! seven thousand ogresses will be at your beck and call. (Therefore) accept Ravana, the lord of all ogres as your husband.
utpāṭya vā tē hṛdayaṅ bhakṣayiṣyāmi maithili.

yadi mē vyāhṛtaṅ vākyaṅ na yathāvatkariṣyasi৷৷5.24.38৷৷


maithili Mythili, vyāhṛtam spoken, mē me, vākyam word, yathāvat faithfully, na kariṣyasi if you do not obey yadi if, tē hṛdayam your heart, utpāṭya vā pluck out, bhakṣayiṣyāmi eat up.

'O Mythili! if you heed not my words of advice, I will pluck out your heart and eat it up'.
tataścaṇḍōdarī nāma rākṣasī krōdhamūrchitā.

bhrāmayantī mahacchūlamidaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷5.24.39৷৷


tataḥ then, caṇḍōdarī nāma called Chandodari, rākṣasī ogress, krōdhamūrchitā overcome with anger, mahat huge, śūlam trident, bhrāmayantī while rotating, idam this, vacanam word, abravīt spoke.

Next spoke a fierce-looking ogress called Chandodari, overcome with anger taking up a huge trident and rotating.
imāṅ hariṇalōlākṣīṅ trāsōtkampipayōdharām.

rāvaṇēna hṛtāṅ dṛṣṭavā dauhṛdō mē mahānabhūt৷৷5.24.40৷৷


hariṇalōlākṣīm eyes flashing like doe's, trāsōtkampipayōdharām her breasts heaving in stress,
rāvaṇēna by Ravana, hṛtām abducted, imām this lady, dṛṣṭvā seeing you, mē my, mahān great, dauhṛdaḥ desire in my heart, abhūt developed.

'I have developed a morbid desire to feast upon this woman with eyes flashing like doe's, whose breasts heave with stress and fear after she was abducted by Ravana.
yakṛtplīhamathōtpīḍaṅ hṛdayaṅ ca sabandhanam.

āntrāṇyapi tathā śīrṣaṅ khādēyamiti mē matiḥ৷৷5.24.41৷৷


yakṛt liver, plīham spleen, utpīḍam pressing out, sabandhanam including all joints, hṛdayaṅ ca heart also, antrāṇyapi ca intestines, tathā similarly, śīrṣam head, khādēyam iti I may eat up, mē my, matiḥ thought.

'I thought of feasting on your spleen, liver, heart, all the joints, head and intestines.'
tatastu praghasā nāma rākṣasī vākyamabravīt.

kaṇṭhamasyā nṛśaṅsāyāḥ pīḍayāma kimāsyatē৷৷5.24.42৷৷


tataḥ then, praghasā nāma called Praghasa, rākṣasī ogress,, vākyam these words, abravīt said, asyāḥ her, nṛśaṅsāyāḥ of the heartless lady, kaṇṭham throat, pīḍayāma we will twist, kim why, āsyatē are you sitting idle.

Next spoke an ogress called Praghasa, saying 'Why not we twist and squeeze the neck of this heartless lady. Why are you sitting idle still? Come on.'
nivēdyatāṅ tatō rājñē mānuṣī sā mṛtēti ha.

nātra kaścana saṅdēhaḥ khādatēti sa vakṣyati৷৷5.24.43৷৷


sā she, mānuṣī that human being, mṛtēti is dead, tataḥ then, rājñē to the king, nivēdyatām let it be announced, khādata you may eat her, iti thus, saḥ he, vakṣyati he will say, atra here, kaścana even a little, sandēhaḥ doubt, na not.

'Thereafter we will announce that such a human being is dead. Then Ravana will simply say 'eat her up'. There is no doubt .'
tatastvajāmukhī nāma rākṣasī vākyamabravīt.

viśasyēmāṅ tataḥ sarvāḥ samān kuruta piṇḍakān৷৷5.24.44৷৷


tataḥ then, ajāmukhī nāma called Ajamukhi, rākṣasī ogress, vākyam these words, abravīt said, sarvāḥ all, imām this Sita's, viśasya cut her body, tataḥ then, samān equal piṇḍakān lumps, kuruta do.

Then an ogress called Ajamukhi said, 'Let her body be cut into lumps of equal pieces.
vibhajāma tataḥ sarvā vivādō mē na rōcatē.

pēyamānīyatāṅ kṣipraṅ lēhyamuccāvacaṅ bahu৷৷5.24.45৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, sarvāḥ all, vibhajāma we will share, mē to me, vivādaḥ dispute, na rōcatē it is disliked, kṣipram swiftly, pēyam drink, uccāvacam of all types, bahu many, lēhyam licking food, ānīyatām may be brought.

'We shall share them. I do not like disputes in this regard. Go swiftly and get drinks and food to lick. Let the accompanying dishes of all variety and quality be brought.'
tataḥ śūrpaṇakhā nāma rākṣasī vākyamabravīt.

ajāmukhyā yaduktaṅ hi tadēva mama rōcatē৷৷5.24.46৷৷


tataḥ then, śūrpaṇakhā nāma called Soorpanakha, rākṣasī rakshasi, vākyam these words, abravīt said, ajāmukhyā Ajamukhi, yat what ever, uktam was said, tadēva that alone, mama to me, rōcatē is acceptable.

Then an ogress called Surpanakha said, 'I too like the proposal of Ajamukhi.'
surā cānīyatāṅ kṣipraṅ sarvaśōkavināśinī.

mānuṣaṅ māṅsamāsvādya nṛtyāmō.tha nikumbhilām৷৷5.24.47৷৷


kṣipram quickly, sarvaśōkavināśinī destroyer of all sorrows, surā ca wine also, ānīyatām may be brought, mānuṣam humans, māṅsam flesh, āsvādya after relishing, atha then, nikumbhilām Nikumbhila, nṛtyāmaḥ we will dance.

'Get the wine quickly, destroyer of all sorrows. After relishing the human flesh we will start Nikumbhila dance.'
ēvaṅ saṅbhartsyamānā sā sītā surasutōpamā.

rākṣasībhiḥ sughōrābhirdairyamutsṛjya rōditi৷৷5.24.48৷৷


sughōrābhiḥ by the highly dreadful ones, rākṣasībhiḥ by ogresses, ēvam in that manner, saṅbhartsyamānā being threatened, surasutōpamā like the daughter of a god, sā sītā that Sita, dhairyam courage, utsṛjya after giving up, rōditi she cried aloud.

Threatened by the ogresses in that manner, Sita who was like the daughter of a god, cried aloud.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē caturviṅśassargaḥ.
Thus ends the twentyfourth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
