[Sita decides to end her sad life.]

prasaktāśrumukhītyavaṅ bruvantī janakātmajā.

ādhōgatamukhī bālā vilaptumupacakramē৷৷5.26.1৷৷


prasaktāśrumukhī shedding tears on this account, bālā young lady, janakātmajā Janaka's daughter, ēvam in this way, bruvantī speaking, adhōgatamukhī with a face bending low, vilaptum to cry, upacakramē started.

The young daughter of king Janaka thus speaking, began to cry, her face bent down.
unmattēva pramattēva bhrāntacittēva śōcatī.

upāvṛttā kiśōrīva vivēṣṭantī mahītalē৷৷5.26.2৷৷


unmattēva like a bewildered person, pramattēva like an intoxicated one, bhrāntacittēva with distracted mind, śōcatī worrying, upāvṛttā wallowing, kiśōrīva like an young horse, mahītalē on the ground, vivēṣṭantī coiled round.

Bewildered or distracted or intoxicated, this young lady wailed, wallowing round on the ground like a young female horse:
rāghavasya pramattasya rakṣasā kāmarūpiṇā.

rāvaṇēna pramathyāhamānītā krōśatī balāt৷৷5.26.3৷৷


rāghavasya Rama's, pramattasya engaged, kāmarūpiṇā who can assume any form at his will, rakṣasā by a demon, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, pramathya tormented, krōśatī screaming, aham I, balāt forcibly, ānītā I was brought.

"When Rama was engaged (in deer hunt) and I was screaming, I was brought forcibly
by Ravana who can assume any form at his will.
rākṣasīvaśamāpannā bhartsyamānā sudāruṇam.

cintayantī suduḥkhārtā nāhaṅ jīvitumutsuhē৷৷5.26.4৷৷


rākṣasīvaśam fallen under the clutches of the ogresses, āpannā I have been, sudāruṇam very dreadful, bhartsyamānā threatened, cintayantī worrying, suduḥkhārtā overcome with terrible grief, aham I, jīvitum to live, na utsahē I have no interest.

"Having fallen under the clutches of the dreadful demonesses and threatened by them, I am so full of woes and worries that I don't want to live.
na hi mē jīvitēnārthō naivārthērna ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ.

vasantyā rākṣasīmadhyē vinā rāmaṅ mahāratham৷৷5.26.5৷৷


mahāratham great charioteer, rāmaṅ vinā without Rama, rākṣasīmadhyē in the midst of ogresses, vasantyāḥ while living, mē my, jīvitēna with life, arthaḥ use, na not, arthaiḥ with wealth, na no, bhūṣaṇaiśca with ornaments, na no need.

"In the absence of the great charioteer Rama, of what use is my living in the midst of ogresses? I need no wealth, no ornaments.
aśmasāramidaṅ nūnamathavāpyajarāmaram.

hṛdayaṅ mama yēnēdaṅ na duḥkhēnāvaśīryatē৷৷5.26.6৷৷


athavā or, mama my, idam this, hṛdayam heart, nūnam surely, aśmasāram made of stone, ajarāmaramapi with no age or death, yēna since, duḥkhēna grieving, nāvaśīryatē it does not riven

"It may be, that my heart is made of stone or it has no age or death since it does not riven even with grief.
dhiṅmāmanāryāmasatīṅ yāhaṅ tēnā vinā kṛtā.

muhūrtamapi rakṣāmi jīvitaṅ pāpajīvitā৷৷5.26.7৷৷


pāpajīvitā a woman of sinful life, yā since, aham I, tēna vinā kṛtā I am separated from Rama, muhūrtamapi even for a moment, jīvitam life, rakṣāmi I am preserving, anāryām a wrteched, asatīm infidel, mām me, dhik fie upon

"I am preserving this sinful life like this though separated from Rama. Fie on me, for this wretched, infidel life !
kā ca mē jīvitē śraddhā sukhē vā taṅ priyaṅ vinā.

bhartāraṅ sāgarāntāyā vasudhāyāḥ priyaṅvadam৷৷5.26.8৷৷


sāgarāntāyāḥ extending upto the ocean, vasudhāyāḥ of the earth, bhartāram husband, priyaṅvadam of pleasing words, tam him, vinā without, mē my, jīvitē in life, sukhē vā in pleasure, śraddhā interest, kā why?

"How can I have interest in any kind of pleasure without my sweet-tongued husband, the lord of the whole earth extending up to the ocean.
bhidyatāṅ bhakṣyatāṅ vāpi śarīraṅ visṛjāmyaham.

na cāpyahaṅ ciraṅ duḥkhaṅ sahēyaṅ priyavarjitā৷৷5.26.9৷৷


aham I, śarīram my body, visṛjāmi I will leave, bhidyatām you cut me to pieces, bhakṣyatāṅ vāpi or you eat me up, priyavarjitā separated from my dear lord, aham I, ciram for long, duḥkham sorrow, na ca sahēyam I cannot bear.

"I will give up my body. Break me into pieces or eat me up. I cannot bear the sorrow of separation from my dear Rama any longer.
caraṇēnāpi savyēna na spṛśēyaṅ niśācaram.

rāvaṇaṅ kiṅ punarahaṅ kāmamēyaṅ vigarhitam৷৷5.26.10৷৷


niśācaram night-ranger, vigarhitam vile, rāvaṇam Ravana, aham I, savyēna with the left, carēṇēna api even with feet, na spṛśēyam will not touch, kiṅ what, punaḥ again, kāmamēyaṅ can I love him.

"I will not even touch that vile night-ranger Ravana with my left foot. What to speak of loving him.
pratyākhyātaṅ na jānāti nātmānaṅ nātmanaḥ kulam.

yō nṛśaṅsasvabhāvēna māṅ prārthayitumicchati৷৷5.26.11৷৷


yaḥ he who, nṛśaṅsasvabhāvēna due to cruel nature, mām me, prārthayitum for pleading, icchati hopes, ātmānam his own, pratyākhyātam loss of fame, na jānāti is not aware, ātmanaḥ of himself, kulam family, na not.

chinnā bhinnā vibhaktā vā dīptēvāgnau pradīpitā.

rāvaṇaṅ nōpatiṣṭhēyaṅ kiṅ pralāpēna vaściram৷৷5.26.12৷৷


chinnā vā whether cut, bhinnā broken into pieces, dīptē as if burnt, agnau by fire, pradīpitā vā or burnt by others, rāvaṇam Ravana, nōpatiṣṭhēyam I will not accept, ciram for long, vibhaktā: or else share, pralāpēna by empty words, kim what is the use.

"Even if I am cut, broken to pieces or burnt in glowing fire, I will not accept Ravana. Why do you shout for so long?
khyātaḥ prājñaḥ kṛtajñaśca sānukrōśaśca rāghavaḥ.

sadvṛttō niranukrōśaśśaṅkē madbhāgyasaṅkṣayāt৷৷5.26.13৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, khyātaḥ renowned, prājñaḥwise, kṛtajña grateful, sānukrōśaśca a kind hearted one,
sadvṛttaḥ well behaved, madbhāgyasaṅkṣayāt due to my misfortune, niranukrōśaḥ turned pitiless, śaṅkē I doubt.

"Rama is renowned, wise, grateful and kindly. It is due to my misfortune that he has turned pitiless to me. There is no doubt.
rākṣasānāṅ sahasrāṇi janasthānē caturdaśa.

yēnaikēna nirastāni sa māṅ kiṅ nābhipadyatē৷৷5.26.14৷৷


ēkēna by single one, yēna by whom, janasthānē at Jansthana, rākṣasānām of demons, caturdaśa fourteen, sahasrāṇi thousand, nirastāni destroyed, saḥ he, mām my, kim why, nābhipadyatē not protect me.

"He who destroyed fourteen thousand demons single-handed has not come to protect me. I do not know why.
niruddhā rāvaṇēnāhamalpavīryēṇa rakṣasā.

samarthaḥ khalu mē bhartā rāvaṇaṅ hantumāhavē৷৷5.26.15৷৷


aham I, alpavīryēṇa of inferior valour, rakṣasā by the demon, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, niruddhā I am held captive, mē bhartā my husband, āhavē in battle, rāvaṇam Ravana, hantum killing, samarthaḥ khalu is surely capable.

"Rama, my husband, for sure, is capable of killing in battle this Ravana who has held me captive and who is a demon of inferior valour.
virādhō daṇḍakāraṇyē yēna rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ.

raṇē rāmēṇa nihatassa māṅ kiṅ nābhipadyatē৷৷5.26.16৷৷


yēna by whom, rāmēṇa by Rama, daṇḍakāraṇyē in Dandaka forest, raṇē in fight, rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ a bull among demons, virādha: Viradha, nihataḥ killed, saḥ that Rama, mām me, kim why, nābhipadyatē not protecting me.

"Why is Rama who killed Viradha, a bull among demons, in Dandaka forest in the fight not coming to rescue me?
kāmaṅ madhyē samudrasya laṅkēyaṅ duṣpradharṣaṇā.

na tu rāghavabāṇānāṅ gatirōdhō bhaviṣyati ৷৷5.26.17৷৷


samudrasya ocean's, madhyē in the middle, iyam this, laṅkā Lanka, duṣpradharṣaṇā unassailable, tu but, rāghavabāṇānām by the arrow of Rama, gatirōdha: resist, na bhaviṣyati will not be.

"This Lanka in the middle of the ocean is unassailable. But there is nothing which can resist the arrows of Rama.
kinnu tatkāraṇaṅ yēna rāmō dṛḍhaparākramaḥ.

rakṣasāpahṛtāṅ bhāryāmiṣṭāṅ nābhyavapadyatē৷৷5.26.18৷৷


tat such, kāraṇam reason, kiṅ nu what can be, yēna by which, dṛḍhaparākramaḥ highly powerful, rāmaḥ Rama, rakṣasā by the demon, apahṛtām abducted, iṣṭām dear, bhāryām wife, nābhyavapadyatē not reach.

"What may be the reason that my loving husband, Rama who is highly powerful has not reached this place to which I was abducted by the demon.
ihasthāṅ māṅ na jānītē śaṅkē lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ.

jānannapi hi tējasvī dharṣaṇaṅ marṣayiṣyati৷৷5.26.19৷৷


lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ elder brother of Lakshmana, mām me, ihasthām that I am here, na jānītē he does not know, śaṅkē I doubt, jānannapi even if he had known, tējasvī glorious, dharṣaṇam such an outrageous act, marṣayiṣyati he is tolerating.

"The elder brother of Lakshamana does not know that I am here. Or, I'm afraid, the glorious Rama knows and yet tolerates such an outrageous act.
hṛtēti yō.dhigatvā māṅ rāghavāya nivēdayēt.

gṛdhrarājō.pi sa raṇē rāvaṇēna nipātitaḥ৷৷5.26.20৷৷


yaḥ he who, adhigatvā after knowing, hṛtēti is borne away, rāghavāya to Raghava, nivēdayēt inform, saḥ he, gṛdhrarājō.pi even the king of vultures, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, raṇē in fight, nipātitaḥ is thrashed down.

"Even the king of vultures knows I was borne away. He could have informed Rama. But he has also been thrashed down on the earth by Ravana in the fight.
kṛtaṅ karma mahattēna māṅ tathā.bhyavapadyatā.

tiṣṭhatā rāvaṇadvandvē vṛddhēnāpi jaṭāyuṣā৷৷5.26.21৷৷


mām me, tathā then, abhyavapadyatā by advancing, vṛddhēnāpi even being old, rāvaṇadvandvē in the duel with Ravana, tiṣṭhatā stood, tēna jaṭāyuṣā by that Jatayu, mahat great, karma help, kṛtam did.

"Though old, Jatayu did a great help to me by resisting Ravana in the duel and advancing (to confront him.).
yadi māmiha jānīyādvartamānāṅ sa rāghavaḥ.

adya bāṇairabhikruddhaḥ kuryāllōkamarākṣasam৷৷5.26.22৷৷


saḥ he, rāghavaḥ Raghava, mām me, iha here, vartamānām being here, jānīyādyadi if he knew, abhikruddhaḥ angry, lōkam this world, bāṇaiḥ with arrows, adya now, arākṣasam free of demons, kuryāt he would have made.

"Had only Raghava known that I was here he would have freed this world of demons with his anger.
vidhamēcca purīṅ laṅkāṅ śōṣayēcca mahōdadhim.

rāvaṇasya ca nīcasya kīrtiṅ nāma ca nāśayēt৷৷5.26.23৷৷


laṅkāṅ purīm city of Lanka, vidhamēcca he will blow away, mahōdadhim this great ocean, śōṣayēcca will drain it dry, nīcasya of the mean fellow, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, kīrtim fame, nāma ca and name, nāśayēt he would have destroyed.

"Had Rama known that I am in Lanka he would have blown up this city, dried up the ocean and destroyed the name and fame of the mean Ravana.
tatō nihatanāthānāṅ rākṣasīnāṅ gṛhē gṛhē.

yathāhamēvaṅ rudatī tathā bhūyō na saṅśayaḥ৷৷5.26.24৷৷


tataḥ then, aham I, yathā like the way, ēvam in that way, rudatī while crying, tathā similarly, gṛhē gṛhē in every home, nihatanāthānām of those women who lost husbands, rākṣasīnām of the ogresses, bhūyaḥ again, saṅśayaḥ no doubt.

"Like me weeping, the cry of ogresses with lost husbands will be heard in every house in Lanka. There is no doubt.
anviṣya rakṣasāṅ laṅkāṅ kuryādrāmassalakṣmaṇaḥ.

na hi tābhyāṅ ripurdṛṣṭō muhūrtamapi jīvati৷৷5.26.25৷৷


salakṣmaṇaḥ accompanied by Lakshmana, rāmaḥ Rama, rakṣasām of the demons, laṅkām Lanka, anviṣya after searching, kuryāt will do, tābhyām by both of them, dṛṣṭaḥ sight, ripuḥ enemy, muhūrtamapi even for a moment, na jīvati hi will not be alive.

"If only Lakshmana and Rama in their quest for Lanka reach here, it is not possible within their sight for the enemy to survive even a moment.
citādhūmākulapathā gṛdhramaṇḍalasaṅkulā.

acirēṇa tu laṅkēyaṅ śmaśānasadṛśī bhavēt৷৷5.26.26৷৷


iyam this, laṅkā Lanka, acirēṇa without delay, citādhūmakulapathā with its atreets enveloped with smoke from funeral pyres, gṛdhramaṇḍalasaṅkulā thronged with flocks of vultures, śmaśānasadṛśī like the burial ground, bhavēt will be.

"Very soon this Lanka will be enveloped with smoke from funeral pyres and thronged with flocks of vultures moving in circles. It will be like a burial ground.
acirēṇaiva kālēna prāpsyāmyēva manōratham.

duṣprasthānō.yāmākhyāti sarvēṣāṅ vō viparyayam৷৷5.26.27৷৷


acirēṇa kālēnaiva in a short time, manōratham my desire, prāpsyāmyēva I will gain, ayam this, duṣprasthānaḥ behaving badly, sarvēṣām of all of you, vaḥ you people, viparyayam a reversal of fate, ākhyāti indicates

"Your bad behaviour forebodes ill-luck for you.I shall have my desire fulfilled in a short time.
yādṛśānīha dṛśyantē laṅkāyāmaśubhāni vai.

acirēṇaiva kālēna bhaviṣyati hataprabhā৷৷5.26.28৷৷


iha here, laṅkāyām at Lanka, yādṛśāni such, aśubhāni inauspicious signs, dṛśyantē are seen, acirēṇaiva kālēna in a short while, hataprabhā lose its splendour, bhaviṣyati will be.

"Inauspicious signs are seen here in Lanka. In a short time this city will lose its splendour.
nūnaṅ laṅkā hatē pāpē rāvaṇē rākṣasādhamē.

śōṣaṅ yāsyati durdharṣā pramadā vidhavā yathā৷৷5.26.29৷৷


pāpē when the sinner, rākṣasādhamē mean demons, rāvaṇē when Ravana, hatē is killed, durdharṣā impregnable, laṅkā Lanka, nūnam surely, vidhavā widow, pramadā yathā like a woman, śōṣam
wither up, yāsyati truly.

"Surely this impregnable Lanka will wither up (lose its splendour) and appear like a widow when this sinful Ravana, a mean demon is killed.
puṇyōtsavasamutthā ca naṣṭabhartrī sarākṣasī.

bhaviṣyati purī laṅkā naṣṭabhartrī yathāṅganā৷৷5.26.30৷৷


naṣṭabhartrī with the death of the king, laṅkāpurī the city of Lanka, sarākṣasī along with the ogresses, naṣṭabhartrī with the death of her lord, aṅganā yathā like a women, puṇyōtsavasamutthā ca with several auspicious celebrations, bhaviṣyati will remain.

"This city of Lanka with many auspicious celebrations will lose its king and all mean ogresses will remain like widows.
nūnaṅ rākṣasakanyānāṅ rudantīnāṅ gṛhē gṛhē.

śrōṣyāmi nacirādēva duḥkhārtānāmiha dhvanim৷৷5.26.31৷৷


nacirādēva very soon, iha here, gṛhē gṛhē at every house, duḥkhārtānām distressful cry of women, rudantīnām crying, rākṣarakanyānām young ogresses, dhvanim sound, nūnam surely, śrōṣyāmi I will hear.

"I shall surely hear very soon sounds of distressful cry of young ogresses in every household.
sānthakārā hatadyōtā hatarākṣasapuṅgavā.

bhaviṣyati purī laṅkā nirdagdhā rāmasāyakaiḥ৷৷5.26.32৷৷


laṅkāpurī the state of Lanka, rāmasāyakaiḥ with Rama's arrows, nirdagdhā burnt totally, sāndhakārā filled with darkness, hatadyōtā lost splendour, hatarākṣasapuṅgavā with powerful demons killed, bhaviṣyati will be

"Totally burnt by Rama's arrows, this Lanka will be filled with darkness, and its splendour lost and pre-eminent demons destroyed.
yadi nāma sa śūrō māṅ rāmō raktāntalōcanaḥ.

jānīyādvartamānāṅ hi rāvaṇasya nivēśanē৷৷5.26.33৷৷

anēna tu nṛśaṅsēna rāvaṇēnādhamēna mē.

samayō yastu nirdiṣṭastasya kālō.yamāgataḥ৷৷5.26.34৷৷

sa ca mē vihitō mṛtyurasmin duṣṭē na vartatē.


śūraḥ heroic, raktāntalōcanaḥ with blood-shot eyes, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, mām me, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, nivēśanē at home, vartamānām present, yadi that, nāma jānīyāt knows I am here. nṛśaṅsēna by the cruel one, adhamēna by the lowly person, anēna by this one, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, yaḥ whichever, samayaḥ time limit, mē to me, nirdiṣṭaḥ is fixed, tasya its, ayam this, kālaḥ time, āgataḥ has arrived, mē to me, vihitaḥ fixed, saḥ that, mṛtyuḥ death, asmin in him, duṣṭēna by this wicked fellow, vartatē is fixed.

"If the heroic Rama of blood-shot eyes comes to know that I am here at Ravana's, the expiry of time limit fixed by this cruel, lowly, foolish Ravana has arrived, this wicked fellow's death is inevitable.
akāryaṅ yē na jānanti nairṛtāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ৷৷5.26.35৷৷

adharmāttu mahōtpātō bhaviṣyati hi sāṅpratam.

naitē dharmaṅ vijānanti rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ৷৷5.26.36৷৷


pāpakāriṇaḥ sinners, yē those, nairṛtāḥ demons, akāryam a forbidden act, na jānanti they know not adharmāttu due to adharma, sāṅpratam presently, mahōtpātaḥ calamity, bhaviṣyati will befall, piśitāśanāḥ flesh-eating, ētē these, rākṣasāḥ demons, dharmam dharma,na jānanti they are not aware.

"Nothing is forbidden for sinful demons. A calamity will befall now due to this
adharma. The flesh-eating ogres are aware of neither dharma nor adharma
dhruvaṅ māṅ prātarāśārthē rākṣasaḥ kalpayiṣyati.

sāhaṅ kathaṅ kariṣyāmi taṅ vinā priyadarśanam৷৷5.26.37৷৷

rāmaṅ raktāntanayanamapaśyantī suduḥkhitā.


rākṣasaḥ ogre, dhruvam determined, mām me, prātarāśārthē for morning meal, kalpayiṣyati will make it, sā such, aham I, priyadarśanam who has pleasing countenance, taṅ vinā without him, katham how, kariṣyāmi I will do, raktāntanayanam one whose eyes have a reddish tinge in the corners, rāmam Rama, apaśyantī without seeing, suduḥkhitā distressed very much.

"This demon is determined to make me his morning meal. How can I do anything in the absence of my lord of pleasing countenance. I am distressed very much by not seeing Rama, possessed of eyes with a reddish tinge in the corners.
yadi kaścit pradātā mē viṣasyādya bhavēdiha৷৷5.27.38৷৷

kṣipraṅ vaivasvataṅ dēvaṅ paśyēyaṅ patinā vinā.


adya now, mē to me, viṣasya of poison, pradātā donor, kaścit some one, iha here, bhavēdyadi can give, patinā husband vinā devoid, kṣipram soon, dēvam divine, vaivasvatam lord of death, paśyēyam I will see.

"If I can find some one who can give me poison now I shall soon see the lord of death without my lord.
nājānājjīvatīṅ rāmassa māṅ lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ৷৷5.26.39৷৷

jānantau tau na kuryātāṅ nōryvāṅ hi mama mārgaṇam.


lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ elder brother of Lakshmana, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, mām me, jīvatīm living, nājānāt he is not aware tau both of them, jānantau if they had known, mama my, mārgaṇam search, urvyām on earth, na kuryātām iti na not undertake.

"Neither Lakshmana nor his elder brother knows that I am here alive. (Had they known) both of them would have ransacked this earth.
nūnaṅ mamaiva śōkēna sa vīrō lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ৷৷5.26.40৷৷

dēvalōkamitō yātastyaktvā dēhaṅ mahītalē.


vīraḥ heroic one, lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥLakshmna's elder brother, saḥ he, mama my, śōkēnaiva suffering, mahītalē on this earth, dēham body, tyaktvā giving up, itaḥ from here, dēvalōkam to the abode of gods, yātaḥ gone, nūnam surely.

"Would it be that the heroic elder brother of Lakshmana has gone to the abode of gods unable to find me on this earth?
dhanyā dēvāssagandharvāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ৷৷5.26.41৷৷

mama paśyanti yē nāthaṅ rāmaṅ rājīvalōcanam.


mama my, nātham husband, rājīvalōcanam with eyes like lotus petals, rāmam Rama, yē those, paśyanti will see, dēvāḥ gods, sagandharvāḥ along with gandharvas, siddhāśca siddhas, paramarṣayaḥ great sages, dhanyāḥ blessed ones.

"Blessed are the gods, gandharvas, and siddhas and great sages who are able to see my lotus-eyed lord Rama.
athavā na hi tasyārthō dharmakāmasya dhīmataḥ৷৷5.26.42৷৷

mayā rāmasya rājarṣērbhāryayā paramātmanaḥ.


athavā or else, dharmakāmasya one who is ever seeking dharma, dhīmataḥ wise, rājarṣēḥ royal sage, paramātmanaḥ the supreme self, tasya his, rāmasya Rama's, bhāryayā by wife, mayā by me, arthaḥ interest, na hi dispassion.

"Or that royal sage, wise Rama who always seeks dharma having become one with the
supreme spirit has no longer any interest in me?
dṛśyamānē bhavētprīti ssauhṛdaṅ nāstyapaśyataḥ৷৷5.26.43৷৷

nāśayanti kṛtaghnāstu na rāmō nāśayiṣyati.


dṛśyamānē remains before seeing, prītiḥ love, bhavēt will be, apaśyataḥ not see, sauhṛdam friendship, nāsti does not last, kṛtaghnāḥ ungrateful one, nāśayanti will be destroyed, rāmastu Rama too, na nāśayiṣyati will not persih.

"Love attaches itself to one who remains before one's eyes.Friendship fades with separation. The ungrateful destroy love and friendship (as their love is conditioned by frequent meetings). But it cannot happen in case of Rama.
kiṅ nu mē na guṇāḥ kēcitkiṅ vā bhāgyakṣayō mama৷৷5.26.44৷৷ yāhaṅ sīdāmi rāmēṇa hīnā mukhyēna bhāminī.


bhāminī charming lady, yā whoever, aham I, mukhyēna foremost, rāmēṇa vinā without Rama, sīdāmi sinking, mē for me, kēcit some, guṇāḥ qualities, na kiṅ nu are they not found, kiṅ vā or else, mama my, bhāgyakṣayaḥ fortune is diminished.

"Do I, a charming lady, not have any good fortune because of my past deeds? I wonder how a foremost woman like me seperated from my husband is sinking in grief without Rama. Has my fortune diminished?
śrēyō mē jīvitānmartuṅ vihīnāyā mahātmanaḥ৷৷5.26.45৷৷

rāmādakliṣṭacāritrācchūrācchatrunibarhaṇāt.


akliṣṭacāritrāt of blemishless character, śūrāt from the brave, śatrunibarhaṇāt who can destroy his enemy, mahātmanaḥ great self, rāmāt from Rama, vihīnāyāḥ seperated, mē me, jīvitāt with life, martum to die, śrēyaḥ it is better for me.

"Instead of living separated from noble and brave Rama, a blemishless character and a
destroyer of enemies, it is better for me to die.
athavā nyastaśatrau tau vanē mūlaphalāśinau৷৷5.26.46৷৷

bhrātarau hi naraśrēṣṭhau saṅvṛttau vanagōcarau.


athavā or else, naraśrēṣṭhau both foremost among men, tau both, bhrātarau brothers, nyataśatrau laid down their arms, vanē in the forest, mūlaphalāśanau eating roots and fruits, vanagōcarau roaming in the forest as ascetics, saṅvṛttau become.

"May be both the brothers, foremost among men, have laid down their arms, and taken to asceticism, subsisting on roots and fruits.
athavā rākṣasēndrēṇa rāvaṇēna durātmanā৷৷5.26.47৷৷

chadmanā ghātitau śūrau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau.


athavā or else, śūrau two heroes, bhrātarau both brothers, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, durātmanā by the wicked one, rākṣasēndrēṇa by the demon king, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, chadmanā by some clever deceptive means, ghātitau are slain.

"Or else, has this wicked demon king slain both the brothers Rama and Lakshmana by some deceptive means?
sā.hamēvaṅgatē kālē martumicchāmi sarvathā৷৷5.26.48৷৷

na ca mē vihitō mṛtyurasmin duḥkhē.pi vartatē.


ēvaṅgatē in the circumstances, kālē at this time, sā such, aham I, sarvathā by all means, martum to die, icchāmi I wish, asmin in this, duḥkhē.pi in sorrwful state, mē to me, mṛtyuḥ death, vihitaḥ ordained, na vartatē does not exist.

"By all means I wish to die in these circumstances. However, death is not ordained for me even in this sorrowful state.
dhanyāḥ khalu mahātmānō munayastyaktakilbiṣāḥ৷৷5.26.49৷৷

jitātmanō mahābhāgā yēṣāṅ na staḥ priyāpriyē.


mahātmānaḥ great men, tyaktakilbiṣāḥ who have given up all sins, jitātmānaḥ those who have self-control, mahābhāgāḥ exhalted ones, munayaḥ sages, dhanyāḥ khalu are surely blessed, yēṣām for whom, priyāpriyē pleasure or displeasure, na staḥ none.

"Blessed are the exhalted sages who have not committed any sin. They have self-control and have subdued their senses. There is no pleasure or displeasure for them.
priyānna saṅbhavēdduḥkhamapriyādadhikaṅ bhayam৷৷5.26.50৷৷

tābhyāṅ hi yē viyujyantē namastēṣāṅ mahātmanām.


priyāt from a pleasing act, duḥkham sorrow, apriyāt from an unpleasant act, adhikam excessive, bhayam fear, na saṅbhavēt may not result, yē those, tābhyām from both of them, viyujyantē those who have distanced themselves, tēṣām for them, mahātmānām of the great sages, namaḥ salutations to them.

"Salutations to those exalted souls who have distanced themselves from pleasure and displeasure. Pleasures may not lead to suffering or displeasure to excessive, meaningless fear for such great souls.
sāhaṅ tyaktā priyārhēṇa rāmēṇa viditātmanā৷৷5.26.51৷৷

prāṇāṅstyakṣyāmi pāpasya rāvaṇasya gatā vaśam.


priyēṇaiva who deserves pleasant things, viditātmanā by the knower of the self, rāmēṇa by Rama, tyaktā separated, pāpasya sinner's, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, vaśam clutches, gatā reached, sā aham that I am, prāṇān life, tyakṣyāmi I will give up.

"Separated from the wise Rama who deserves pleasant things I will give up life being under the clutches of the sinful Ravana.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē ṣaḍivaṅśa ssargaḥ.
Thus ends the twentysixth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
