[Trijata narrates her dream]

ityuktāssītayā ghōraṅ rākṣasyaḥ krōdhamūrchitāḥ.

kāścijjagmustadākhyātuṅ rāvaṇasya tarasvinaḥ৷৷5.27.1৷৷


sītayā by Sita, iti thus, uktāḥ spoken, rākṣasyaḥ rakshasis, ghōram of terrible, krōdhamūrchitāḥ overwhelmed with anger, kāścit some, tat that, tarasvinaḥ of the swift, rāvaṇasya to Ravana, ākhyātum to inform, jagmuḥ went

Hearing Sita's words, some terrifying demonesses, overwhelmed with anger, went to inform Ravana, who was quick to act.
tataḥ sītāmupāgamya rākṣasyō ghōradarśanāḥ.

punaḥ paruṣamēkārthamanarthārthamathābruvan৷৷5.27.2৷৷


tataḥ then, ghōradarśanāḥ dreadful-looking, rākṣasyaḥ demonesses, sītām Sita, upāgamya having reached, atha and, punaḥ once again, anarthārtham a word leading to terrible consequences, ēkārtham conveying one meaning, paruṣam harshly, abruvan spoke.

The dreadful-looking demonesses once again approached Sita and conveyed her categorically in harsh words the terrible consequences (ahead)
adyēdānīṅ tavānāryē sītē pāpaviniścayē.

rākṣasyō bhakṣayiṣyanti māṅsamētadyathāsukham৷৷5.27.3৷৷


anāryē vile one!, pāpaviniścayē O woman determined in evil ways, sītē O Sita, adya today, idānīm these, tava your, ētata māṅsam your flesh, rākṣasyaḥ rakshasa women, yathāsukham heart's content, bhakṣayiṣyanti will eat.

"O vile one! you are determined in your evil ways. Today these she-demons will eat away your flesh to their heart's content ".
sītāṅ tābhiranāryābhirdṛṣṭavā santarjitāṅ tadā.

rākṣasī trijaṭā vṛddhā śayānā vākyamabravīt৷৷5.27.4৷৷


tadā then, anāryābhiḥ by ignoble women, tābhiḥ by them, santarjitām threatened, sītām Sita, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, śayānā while lying down, vṛddhā old, trijaṭā Trijata, rākṣasī a demoness, vākyam these words, abravīt said.

Then seeing the ignoble she-demons threatening Sita, an old demoness called Trijata, who was lying down there, said:
ātmānaṅ khādatānāryā na sītāṅ bhakṣayiṣyatha.

janakasya sutāmiṣṭāṅ snuṣāṅ daśarathasya ca৷৷5.27.5৷৷


anāryāḥ O ignoble ones, ātmānam yourselves, khādata devour, janakasya Janaka's, iṣṭām favourite, sutām daughter, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, snuṣāṅ ca and daughter-in-law, sītām Sita, na bhakṣayiṣyatha do not eat.

"Devour yourselves now, O ignoble ones, if you will. Do not eat Janaka's favourite daughter, the daughter-in-law of Dasaratha.
svapnō hyadya mayā dṛṣṭō dāruṇō rōmaharṣaṇaḥ.

rākṣasānāmabhāvāya bharturasyā bhavāya ca৷৷5.27.6৷৷


adya today, dāruṇaḥ terrific, rōmaharṣaṇaḥ horripilating, svapnaḥ dream, rākṣasānām all the demons, abhāvāya for the destruction, asyāḥ her, bhartuḥ husband's, bhavāya triumph, mayā by myself, dṛṣṭaḥ was seen.

"Tonight I had a terrific, horriplating nightmare in which I saw the annihilation of all demons and the triumph of Sita's husband".
ēvamuktāstrijaṭayā rākṣasyaḥ krōdhamūrchitāḥ.

sarvā ēvābruvanbhītāstrijaṭāṅ tāmidaṅ vacaḥ৷৷5.26.7৷৷


trijaṭayā by Trijata, ēvam that way, uktāḥ having been spoken, krōdhamūrchitāḥ overcome by wrath, rākṣasyaḥ she-demons, sarvāḥ ēva all of them, bhītāḥ terrified, tām her, trijaṭām to Trijata, idam this, vacaḥ word, abruvan spoke.

Seized with fear, the she-demons, overcome with wrath on hearing Trijata's words said to her:
kathayasva tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ svapnō.yaṅ kīdṛśō niśi.

tāsāṅ śrutvā tu vacanaṅ rākṣasīnāṅ mukhācyutam৷৷5.27.8৷৷

uvaca vacanaṅ kālē trijaṭā svapnasaṅśritam.


niśi night, tvayā by you, dṛṣṭaḥ seen, ayam this, svapnaḥ dream, kīdṛśaḥ what did you see, kathayasva tell, tāsām of them, rākṣasīnām of she-demons, mukhāt from their mouth, cyutam slipped, vacanam word, śrutvā after hearing, trijaṭā Trijata, kālē early morning time, svapnasaṅśritam all about the dream, vacanam words, uvāca spoke.

"O Trijata, tell us the kind of dream you dreamt last night", they insisted. Hearing the words from the mouth of the she-demons, Trijata told them all about her dream.
gajadantamayīṅ divyāṅ śibikāmantarikṣagām৷৷5.27.9৷৷

yuktāṅ haṅsasahasrēṇa svayamāsthāya rāghavaḥ.

śuklamālyāmbaradharō lakṣmaṇēna sahāgataḥ৷৷5.27.10৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, śuklamālyāmbaradharaḥ wearing a garland of white flowers and clad in white attire, gajadantamayīm made of ivory, antarikṣagām coursing through the sky, haṅsasahasrēṇa by a thousand swans, yuktām yoked, śibikām palanquin, svayam himself, āsthāya having
ascended, lakṣmaṇēna saha accompanied by Lakshmana, āgataḥ arrived.

"Rama, in white attire, wearing a garland of white flowers, ascending a palanquin made of ivory drawn by a thousand swans and coursing through the sky with Lakshmana arrived.
svapnē cādya mayā dṛṣṭā sītā śuklāmbarāvṛtā.

sāgarēṇa parikṣiptaṅ śvētaṅ parvatamāsthitā৷৷5.27.11৷৷


sītā ca Sita also, śuklāmbarāvṛtā wearing white robes, sāgarēṇa by the ocean, parikṣiptam surrounded by, śvētam white, parvatam mountain, āsthitā perched, mayā by me, adya now, svapnē in the dream, dṛṣṭā was seen.

"I also saw Sita in my dream wearing white robes and perched on a white mountain surrounded by the ocean.
rāmēṇa saṅgatā sītā bhāskarēṇa prabhā yathā.

rāghavaśca mayā dṛṣṭaścaturdaṣṭraṅ mahāgajam৷৷5.27.12৷৷

ārūḍha śśailasaṅkāśaṅ cacāra sahalakṣmaṇaḥ.


sītā Sita, rāmēṇa with Rama, prabhā light, bhāskarēṇa with the Sun, yathā like, saṅgatā united, rāmaśca Rama also, caturdraṅṣṭram having four tusks, śailasaṅkāśam resembling a mountain, mahagajam huge elephant, ārūḍhaḥ ascended, mayā by me, dṛṣṭaḥ seen, sahalakṣmaṇaḥ along with Lakshmana, cacāra went.

"Just as light is united with the Sun, I saw Sita united with Rama. I saw Rama with Lakshmana riding a huge, mountain-like elephant having four tusks.
tatastau naraśārdūlau dīpyamānau svatējasā৷৷5.27.13৷৷

śuklamālyāmbaradharau jānakīṅ paryupasthitau.


tataḥ then, svatējasā by their self-effulgence, dīpyamānau glowing, śuklamālyāmbaradharau wearing white garlands and clothes, tau both, naraśārdūlau tigers among men, jānakīm Janaki, paryupasthitau came near.

"Dressed in white garlands and clothes, the two brothers, tigers among men, glowing in their effulgence approached Janaki.
tatastasya nagasyāgrē hyākāśasthasya dantinaḥ৷৷5.27.14৷৷

bhartrā parigṛhītasya jānakī skandhamāśritā.


tataḥ then, jānakī Janaki, tasya of that, nagasya mountain's, agrē front, bhartrā by husband, parigṛhītasya held, ākāśasthasya waiting in the sky, dantinaḥ of the elephant, skandham mounted, āśritā took seat.

"Then from the front of the mountain Janaki shifted to the back of the elephant held by her husband waiting in the sky.
bharturaṅkātsamutpatya tataḥ kamalalōcanā৷৷5.27.15৷৷

candrasūryau mayā dṛṣṭā pāṇinā parimārjatī.


tataḥ then, kamalalōcanā lotus eyed Sita, bhartuḥ husband's, aṅkāt from his lap, samutpatya springing up, pāṇinā with palms, candrasūryau Moon and Sun, parimārjatī as she was caressing, mayā me, dṛṣṭā was seen.

"Then I saw the lotus-eyed Sita springing up from the lap of her husband and playfully caressing the Moon and Sun with her palms.
tatastābhyāṅ kumārābhyāmāsthita: sa gajōttamaḥ৷৷5.27.16৷৷

sītayā ca viśālākṣyā laṅkāyā uparisthitaḥ.


tataḥ then, tābhyām by both of them, kumārābhyām by both the princes, viśālākṣyā large-eyed, sītayā ca by Sita, āsthitaḥ held, saḥ he, gajōttamaḥ best of elephants, laṅkāyāḥ Lanka's, upari
over, sthitaḥ stood.

"Then the excellent elephant was seen halted in the city of Lanka with both princes and the large-eyed Sita mounted on the elephant.
pāṇḍurarṣabhayuktēna rathēnāṣṭayujā svayam৷৷5.27.17৷৷

ihōpayātaḥ kākutstha ssītayā saha bhāryayā.


kākutstha: Rama, bhāryayā accompanied by wife, sītayā saha along with Sita, pāṇḍurarṣabhayuktēna yoked by white oxen, aṣṭayujā eight of them, rathēna by a chariot, svayam himself, iha here, upayātaḥ came.

"Rama accompanied by his wife Sita came on a chariot yoked to eight white oxen.
lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā sītayā saha vīryavān৷৷5.27.18৷৷

āruhya puṣpakaṅ divyaṅ vimānaṅ sūryasannibham.

uttarāṅ diśamālōkya jagāma puruṣōttamaḥ৷৷5.27.19৷৷


vīryavān valiant, puruṣōttamaḥ foremost of men, bhrātrā with his brother, lakṣmaṇēna with Lakshmana, sītayā saha accompanied by Sita, divyam wonderful, sūryasannibham resembling the Sun, puṣpakaṅ vimānam Pushpaka chariot, āruhya after ascending, uttarām north, diśam direction, ālōkya seeing, jagāma went.

"Valiant Rama, foremost among men, accompanied by his brother Lakshmana and wife Sita went towards the northerly direction in the wonderful Pushpaka chariot that resembled the Sun.
ēvaṅ svapnē mayā dṛṣṭō rāmō viṣṇuparākramaḥ.

lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā sītayā saha rāghavaḥ৷৷5.27.20৷৷


viṣṇuparākramaḥ valiant as Visnu, rāghavaḥ Raghava, rāmaḥ Rama, bhrātrā with his brother, lakṣmaṇēna
also with Lakshmana, sītayā saha accompanied by Sita, svapnē in dream, ēvam in that way, mayā by myself, dṛṣṭaḥ was seen.

"In this way I saw in my dream Rama as valiant as Lord Visnu accompanied by his brother Lakshmana and his wife Sita.
na hi rāmō mahātējāśśakyō jētuṅ surāsuraiḥ.

rākṣasairvāpi cānyairvā svargaḥ pāpajanairiva৷৷5.27.21৷৷


mahātējāḥ very brilliant, rāmaḥ Rama, surāsuraiḥ by gods and demons, rākṣasairvāpi and even by demons, anyairvā and others also, svargaḥ heaven, pāpajanairiva like sinners, jētum to win, na śakyaḥ not possible.

"Just as a sinner cannot attain heaven Rama cannot be won by gods or demons, even rakshasas and others.
rāvaṇaśca mayā dṛṣṭaḥ kṣitau tailasamukṣitaḥ.

raktavāsāḥ pibanmattaḥ karavīrakṛtasrajaḥ৷৷5.27.22৷৷


rāvaṇaśca Ravana's, kṣitau on the ground, tailasamukṣitaḥ smeared with oil, raktavāsāḥ clad in red clothes, karavīrakṛtasrajaḥ wearing a garland of lilies, piban drinking, mattaḥ intoxicated, mayā I, dṛṣṭaḥ was seen.

"I saw the body of Ravana lying on the ground smeared with oil, clad in red, wearing a garland of lilies and intoxicated with drinking.
vimānātpuṣpakādadya rāvaṇaḥ patitō bhuvi.

kṛṣyamāṇaḥ striyā dṛṣṭō muṇḍaḥ kṛṣṇāmbaraḥ punaḥ৷৷5.27.23৷৷


adya today, puṣpakāt vimānāt from the Pushpaka chariot, bhuvi on earth, patitaḥ fallen down, muṇḍaḥ with shaven head, kṛṣṇāmbaraḥ clad in black clothes, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, striyā by a woman, kṛṣyamāṇaḥ being dragged, puna: again, dṛṣṭaḥ saw.

"Tonight I saw (in another dream) Ravana with shaven head, clad in black clothes, fallen down on the ground from the Pushpaka chariot, being dragged by a woman.
rathēna kharayuktēna raktamālyānulēpanaḥ.

pipaṅstailaṅ hasannṛtyan bhrāntacittākulēndriyaḥ৷৷5.27.24৷৷


raktamālyānulēpanaḥ wearing red garlands and unguents, tailam oil, piban drinking, hasan laughing, nṛtyan dancing, bhrāntacittākulēndriyaḥ with mind and snses perplexed, kharayuktēna yoked to donkeys, rathēna by the chariot.

"He was wearing red garlands and unguents, his body smeared with oil. He was drinking, laughing and dancing, his mind and senses perplexed. He was driving on a chariot yoked to donkeys.
gardabhēna yayau śīghraṅ dakṣiṇāṅ diśamāsthitaḥ.

punarēva mayā dṛṣṭō rāvaṇō rākṣasēśvaraḥ৷৷5.27.25৷৷

patitō. vākcirā rā bhūmau gardabhādbhayamōhitaḥ.


dakṣiṇāṅ diśam towards southerly direction, āsthitaḥ started, gardabhēna after donkey, śīghram swiftly, yayau went, rākṣasēśvaraḥ demon king, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, bhayamōhitaḥ deluded by fear, gardabhāt of the donkey, avākcirā: head bent down, patitaḥ fallen, mayā by me, punarēva also, dṛṣṭaḥ saw.

"I saw the demon king Ravana running behind the chariot driven by donkeys in the southerly direction. He was falling with his head bent down and deluded by the fear of the donkey.
sahasōtthāya saṅbhrāntō bhayārtō madavihvalaḥ৷৷5.27.26৷৷

unmatta iva digvāsā durvākyaṅ pralapanbahu.

durgandhaṅ dussahaṅ ghōraṅ timiraṅ narakōpamam৷৷5.27.27৷৷

malapaṅkaṅ praviśyāśu magnastatra sa rāvaṇaḥ.


sa rāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, sahasā quickly, utthāya got up, saṅbhrāntaḥ bewildered, bhayārtaḥ terror-stricken, madavihvalaḥ intoxicated with wine, digvāsāḥ naked (with sky as garment), unmatta: mad, iva like, bahu many, durvākyam bad words, pralapan uttering, durgandham emitting foul smell, dussaham words of abuse, ghōram terrific, timiram dark,narakōpamam hell-like, malapaṅkam pool of filth, praviśya having disappeared, āśu he was, tatra there, magnaḥ drowned.

"I saw Ravana, getting up quickly, in a bewildered state, terror-stricken, totally confused in intoxication. He had gone almost insane, naked uttering words of abuse. Plunged into a pool of filth and emitting foul smell he disappeared into a hell-like dark chamber.
kaṇṭhē baddhvā daśagrīvaṅ pramadā raktavāsinī৷৷5.27.28৷৷

kālī kardamaliptāṅgī diśaṅ yāmyāṅ prakarṣati.


raktavāsinī a woman clad in red clothes, kālī a dark one, kardamaliptāṅgī a woman smeared with wet mud, pramadā woman, daśagrīvam ten-necked Ravana, kaṇṭhē neck, baddhvā having bound, yāmyāṅ diśam towards the abode of Yama in the southerly direction, prakarṣati was dragging.

ēvaṅ tatra mayā dṛṣṭaḥ kumbhakarṇō niśācaraḥ৷৷5.27.29৷৷

rāvaṇasya sutāssarvē dṛṣṭāstailasamukṣitāḥ.


tatra there, niśācaraḥ night-ranger, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, mayā by me, ēvam in this way, dṛṣṭaḥ was seen, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, sutāḥ sons, sarvē all, tailasamukṣitāḥ body smeared with oil, dṛṣṭāḥ was seen.

"There I saw the night-ranger, Kumbhakarna and also Ravana's sons, their bodies smeared with oil.
varāhēṇa daśagrīvaśśiṅśumārēṇa cēndrajit৷৷5.27.30৷৷

uṣṭrēṇa kumbhakarṇaśca prayātā dakṣiṇāṅ diśam.


daśagrīvaḥ ten-necked one, varāhēṇa by boar, indrajit Indrajit, śśiṅśumārēṇa ca crocodile, kumbhakarṇa Kumbhakarna, uṣṭrēṇa ca on a camel, dakṣiṇāṅ diśam towards the southern direction, prayātāḥ were travelling.

"The ten-necked Ravana was seen (this time) riding on a boar, Indrajit on a crocodile and Kumbhakarna on a camel all set towards the southerly direction.
ēkastatra mayā dṛṣṭaḥ śvētacchatrō vibhīṣaṇaḥ৷৷5.27.31৷৷

śuklamālyāmbaradharaḥ śuklagandhānulēpanaḥ.


tatra there, ēkaḥ only one, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibhishana, śvētacchatraḥ with white umbrella, śuklamālyāmbaradharaḥ wearing white garlands and clothes, śuklagandhānulēpanaḥ with white sandal paste, mayā by me, dṛṣṭaḥ was seen.

"Only Vibhishana was under a white umbrella clad in white, with white garlands and white sandal paste.
śaṅkhadundhubhinirghōṣairnṛttagītairalaṅkṛtaḥ৷৷5.27.32৷৷

āruhya śailasaṅkāśaṅ mēghastanitanissvanam.

caturdantaṅ gajaṅ divyamāstē tatra vibhīṣaṇaḥ৷৷5.27.33৷৷

caturbhissacivaiḥ sārthaṅ vaihāyasamupasthitaḥ.


vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibhishana, śaṅkhadundubhinirghōṣaiḥ with sounds of conches and drums, nṛttagītaiḥ by dancers and musicians, alaṅkṛtaḥ decorated, śailasaṅkāśam like the mountain, mēghastanitanissvanam trumpetting like a thundering cloud, caturdantam of four tusks, divyam wonderful, gajam elephant, āruhya on ascending, tatra there, āstē stood there, caturbhiḥ four,
sacivaiḥ sārtham with ministers, vaihāyasam in the air, upasthitaḥ reached.

"(Hailed by) the sounds of conches and drums, and of musicians and dancers, Vibhishana was seen ascending on to a decorated four-tust elephant which was huge like a mountain and trumpting like a thundering cloud. He stood there along with four ministers and reached the aerial region.
samājaśca mayā dṛṣṭō gītavāditraniḥsvanaḥ৷৷5.27.34৷৷

pibatāṅ raktamālyānāṅ rakṣasāṅ raktavāsasām.


pibatām of those drinking, raktamālyānām of those putting on flower garlands, raktavāsasām of those wearing red clothes, rakṣasām of rakshasas, gītavāditraniḥsvanaḥ sound of singing and playing musical instruments, samājaśca a group, mayā by me, dṛṣṭaḥ was seen.

laṅkā cēyaṅ purī ramyā savājirathakuñjarāḥ৷৷5.27.35৷৷

sāgarē patitā dṛṣṭā bhagnagōpuratōraṇā.


ramyā delightful, iyam this, laṅkā purī ca city of Lanka, savājirathakuñjarā with horses chariots and elephants, bhagnagōpuratōraṇā crumbling archways and towers, sāgarē in the ocean, patitā fallen, dṛṣṭā seen.

"I saw this delightful Lanka teeming with horses, chariots and elephants, archways and towers crumbling and falling into the ocean.
laṅkā dṛṣṭā mayā svapnē rāvaṇēnābhirakṣitā৷৷5.27.36৷৷

dagdhā rāmasya dūtēna vānarēṇa tarasvinā.


rāvaṇēna by Ravana, abhirakṣitā protected, laṅkā Lanka, rāmasya Rama's, dūtēna by a messenger, tarasvinā by powerful, vānarēṇa by a vanara, dagdhā burnt, mayā by me, svapnē in the
dream, dṛṣṭā seen.

"In my dream I saw this city of Lanka protected by Ravana burnt down by a powerful vanara, a messenger of Rama.
pītvā tailaṅ pranṛttāśca prahasantyō mahāsvanāḥ৷৷5.27.37৷৷

laṅkāyāṅ bhasmarūkṣāyāṅ sarvā rākṣasastriyaḥ.


bhasmarūkṣāyām in a dry place turned into ashes, laṅkāyām in this Lanka, sarvāḥ all, rākṣasastriyaḥ demonesses, tailam oil, pītvā after drinking, prahasantyaḥ laughing away, mahāsvanāḥ shouting in a loud voice, pranṛttāḥ ca danced.

kumbhakarṇādayaścēmē sarvē rākṣasapuṅgavāḥ৷৷5.27.38৷৷

raktaṅ nivasanaṅ gṛhya praviṣṭā gōmayahradē.


kumbhakarṇādayaḥ Kumbhakarna and others, imē these, sarvē rākṣasapuṅgavāḥ all demon leaders, raktam red coloured, nivasanam clothes, gṛhya wearing, gōmayahradē in a pool of cow-dung, praviṣṭāḥ entered.

"Kumbhakarna and other demon leaders wearing red clothes entered into a pool of cow dung.
apagacchata naśyadhvaṅ sītāmāpnōti rāghavaḥ৷৷5.27.39৷৷

ghātayētparamāmarṣī yuṣmānsārthaṅ hi rākṣasaiḥ.


apagacchata go away from here, naśyadhvam you will be destroyed, rāghavaḥ Raghava, sītām Sita, āpnōti he will secure, paramāmarṣī a very angry man, rākṣasaiḥ sārtham along with the demons totally, yuṣmān you, ghātayēt will kill.

"(Therefore) go away from here. You will be totally destroyed by Rama who will secure his wife and will kill all of you along with others in great anger.
priyāṅ bahumatāṅ bhāryāṅ vanavāsamanuvratām৷৷5.27.40৷৷

bhartsitāṅ tarjitāṅ vāpi nānumaṅsyati rāghavaḥ.


rāghavaḥ Rama, priyām his beloved, bahumatām highly respected one, vanavāsam exile in the forest, anuvratām followed, bhāryām wife, bhartsitām abused, tarjitāṅ vāpi or threatened, nānumaṅsyati he will not approve.

"Rama will not approve of any one abusing or threatening his venerable, beloved wife, who had led a life of exile with him.
tadalaṅ krūravākyaiśca sāntvamēvābhidhīyatām৷৷5.27.41৷৷

abhiyācāma vaidēhīmētaddhi mama rōcatē.


tat then, krūravākyaiḥ cruel taunts, alam enough, sāntvamēva peacefully, abhidhīyatām it may be said, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, abhiyācāma we will beg, ētaddhi this itself, mē to me, rōcatē is liked.

"Give up these cruel taunts. Speak to her in a cordial manner. We will beg Vaidehi's forgiveness. I like this kind of action.
yasyāmēvaṅvidhaḥ svapnō duḥkhitāyāṅ pradṛśyatē৷৷5.27.42৷৷

sā duḥkhairvividhairmuktā priyaṅ prāpnōtyanuttamam.


yasyām when any woman, duḥkhitāyām when she is sorrowful, ēvaṅvidhaḥ this kind of, svapnaḥ dream, pradṛśyatē is seen, sā she, vividhaiḥ with all kinds of, duḥkhaiḥ sorrows, muktā she is relieved, anuttamam supreme, priyam joy, prāpnōti will attain.

"When any demoness in a sorrowful state dreams this kind of dream, she will be relieved of sorrow and will obtain supreme joy.
bhartsitāmapi yācadhvaṅ rākṣasyaḥ kiṅ vivakṣayā৷৷5.27.43৷৷

rāghavāddhi bhayaṅ ghōraṅ rākṣasānāmupasthitam.


rākṣasyaḥ O demonesses, bhartsitāmapi even if she is threatened this way, yācadhvam beg her, kim vivakṣayā where is the need to say something, rākṣasānām of demons, rāghavāt from Rama, ghōram terrific, bhayam fear, upasthitam will come.

"O demonesses beg her (pardon) now even though you had threatened her earlier. Where is the need to hesitate? There is cause for concern for demons from Rama.
praṇipātaprasannā hi maithilī janakātmajā৷৷5.27.44৷৷

alamēṣā paritrātuṅ rākṣasyō mahatō bhayāt.


rākṣasyaḥ O she-demons, janakātmajā Janaka's daughter, ēṣā this, maithilī Mythili, praṇipātaprasannā while pleased with your salutations, mahataḥ great, bhayāt fear, paritrātum to save, alam able.

"O she-demons, this Janaka's daughter from Mithila who is capable of protecting you against great dangers will be pleased by your submission.
api cāsyā viśālākṣyā na kiṅcidupalakṣayē৷৷5.27.45৷৷

virūpamapi cāṅgēṣu susūkṣmamapi lakṣaṇam.


api ca and not only that, viśālākṣyāḥ of the large-eyed one, asyāḥ her, aṅgēṣu in her limbs, susūkṣmamapi even a little, virūpam distortion/inauspiciousness, lakṣaṇam sign, kiñcidapi even a little, na upalakṣayē I do not see.

"Look at the signs on her body. There is not a little inauspiciousness in the limbs of the large-eyed princess from Mithila.
chāyāvaiguṇyamātraṅ tu śaṅkē duḥkhamupasthitam৷৷5.27.46৷৷

aduḥkhārhāmimāṅ dēvīṅ vaihāyasamupasthitām.


chāyāvaiguṇyamātraṅ tu only a change in her complexion, vaihāyasam is changed, upasthitām which she has, aduḥkhārhām not deserve to suffer, imām this, dēvīm this queen, duḥkham grief, upasthitam has befallen, śaṅkē I think.

arthasiddhiṅ tu vaidēhyāḥ paśyāmyahamupasthitām৷৷5.27.47৷৷

rākṣasēndravināśaṅ ca vijayaṅ rāghavasya ca.


aham I, vaidēhyāḥ for Vaidehi, arthasiddhiṅ tu fulfilment, upasthitām approaching, paśyāmi I can see, rākṣasēndravināśaṅ ca the destruction of the demon king, rāghavasya for Raghava, vijayaṅ ca success.

"I see the day of fulfilment for Vaidehi has drawn near. I can also foresee the destruction of the demon king and the triumph of Rama.
nimittabhūtamētattu śrōtumasyā mahatpriyam৷৷5.27.48৷৷

dṛśyatē ca sphuraccakṣuḥ padmapatramivāyatam.


asyāḥ her, mahat great, priyam good news, śrōtum to hear, nimittabhūtam has served as an augery, spurat throbbing, ētat this, padmapatramiva like lotus petals, āyatam large, cakṣuḥ eyes, dṛśyatē is seen.

"This dream indeed served as an augery for good news about her. Look, her (left) eye which is large like a lotus petal is throbbing.
īṣaccha hṛṣitō vāsyā dakṣiṇāyā hyadakṣiṇaḥ৷৷5.27.49৷৷

akasmādēva vaidēhyā bāhurēkaḥ prakampatē.


dakṣiṇāyāḥ of a capable lady, asyāḥ her, vaidēhyāḥ Vaidehi's, adakṣiṇaḥ that left, ēkaḥ bāhuḥ that shoulder alone, akasmādēva suddenly, hṛṣitaḥ it may be feeling, īṣat a little bit, prakampatē is throbbing.

"The left shoulder of this great Vaidehi has started suddenly throbbing, indicating that she is feeling a bit happy.
karēṇuhastapratima ssavyaścōruranuttamaḥ৷৷5.27.50৷৷

vēpamānaḥ sūcayati rāghavaṅ purataḥ sthitam.


karēṇuhastapratimaḥ comparable to a female elephant's trunk, anuttamaḥ excellent, savyaḥ the left one, ūruḥ thigh, vēpamānaḥ while trembling, rāghavam Ragahva, purataḥ city, sthitam standing, sūcayati as though indicating.

"Her excellent left thigh, comparable to a female elephant's trunk is trembling, as though indicating that Rama is standing in her presence.
pakṣī ca śākhānilayaṅ praviṣṭaḥ

punaḥ punaścōttamasāntvavādī.

susvāgatāṅ vācamudīrayānaḥ punaḥ

punaścōdayatīva hṛṣṭaḥ৷৷5.27.51৷৷


pakṣī ca a bird, śākhānilayam on the branches, praviṣṭaḥ entered, punaḥ once again, punaśca again and again, uttamasāntvādī the bird which utters excellent sweet notes, susvāgatam vācam a happy tiding, udīrayānaḥ while expressing, hṛṣṭaḥ joyous, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, cōdayatīva is as though prompting.

"One can see the bird which utters excellent sweet notes indicating happy tidings, entering again and again the foliage of the tree, a delightful bird, as if prompting Sita again and again to rejoice.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē saptaviṅśassargaḥ.
Thus ends the twentyseventh sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
