[Killing of Jambumali by Hanuman]

sandiṣṭō rākṣasēndrēṇa prahastasya sutō balī.

jambumālī mahādaṅṣṭrō nirjagāma dhanurdharaḥ৷৷5.44.1৷৷

raktamālyāmbaradharassragvī rucirakuṇḍalaḥ.

mahānvivṛttanayanaścaṇḍassamaradurjayaḥ৷৷5.44.2৷৷

dhanuśśakradhanuḥ prakhyaṅ mahadrucirasāyakam.

viṣphārayāṇō vēgēna vajrāśanisamasvanam৷৷5.44.3৷৷


mahādaṅṣṭraḥ one with big front teeth, dhanurdharaḥ bow in hand, raktamālyāmbaradharaḥ adorned with a garland of red flowers and red clothes, sragvī wearing a chaplet, rucirakuṇḍalaḥ with beautiful earrings, mahān great, vivṛttanayanaḥ who had big round eyes, caṇḍaḥ fierce, samaradurjayaḥ invincible in war, balī mighty, prahastasya sutaḥ son of Prahasta,jambumālī Jambumali,rākṣasēndrēṇa by the demon king, sandiṣṭaḥ commanded, mahat huge, rucirasāyakam who had radiant arrows, vajrāśanisamasvanam making sounds like thunderbolt, śakradhanuḥprakhyam like Indra's splendid bow (a rainbow), dhanuḥ bow, vēgēna very swiftly, viṣphārayāṇaḥ as if thundering, nirjagāma went out.

Commanded by the demon king, Jambumali the invincible son of Prahasta, who had large teeth in front, big rolling eyes, red flower garland, red robes and a chaplet with beautiful earrings. He went round twanging his producing thunderous sound. His arrows were huge, shining and beautiful.
tasya viṣphāraghōṣēṇa dhanuṣō mahatā diśaḥ.

pradiśaśca nabhaścaiva sahasā samapūryata৷৷5.44.4৷৷


tasya his, dhanuṣaḥ bow's, mahatā by the huge, viṣphāraghōṣēṇa by the twang, diśaḥ all directions,
pradiśaścaiva and intermediate directions, nabhaścaiva heavens also, sahasā at once, samapūryata were filled.

All directions including the intermediate directions and the sky were filled with that loud sound produced by his twang.
rathēna kharayuktēna tamāgatamudīkṣya saḥ.

hanumānvēgasampannō jaharṣa ca nanāda ca৷৷5.44.5৷৷


kharayuktēna drawn by donkeys, rathēna by the chariot, āgatam reached, tam him, udīkṣaya after seeing, saḥ hanumān that Hanuman, vēgasampannaḥ who was endowed with speed, jaharṣa ca felt glad, nanāda ca and made a loud noise.

Seeing him coming in a chariot drawn by donkeys, Hanuman who was swift to act was glad (to have an opportunity to fight) and made a loud noise.
taṅ tōraṇaviṭaṅkasthaṅ hanumantaṅ mahākapim.

jambumālī mahābāhurvivyādha niśitaiśśaraiḥ৷৷5.44.6৷৷


mahābāhuḥ strong-armed one, jambumālī Jambumali, tōraṇaviṭaṅkastham who stood on top of the exit archway, mahākapim great monkey, taṅ hanumantam that Hanuman, niśitaiḥ with sharp, śaraiḥ with arrows, vivyādha hit hard.

Strong-armed Jambumali with his sharp arrows hit great Hanuman who stood on top of the exit archway.
ardhacandrēṇa vadanē śirasyēkēna karṇinā.

bāhvōrvivyādha nārācairdaśabhistaṅ kapīśvaram৷৷5.44.7৷৷


ardhacandrēṇa with a crescent-shaped arrow, vadanē on the face, ēkēna with one, karṇinā ear shaped arrow, śirasi on the head, daśabhiḥ ten, nārācaiḥ iron arrows, bāhvōḥ into the arms, taṅ kapīśvaram that lord of monkeys, vivyādha hit.

Jambumali released a crescent-shaped arrow on the face, one ear-shaped (barbed) arrow on the head and ten iron arrows into the arms of the lord of monkeys.
tasya tacchuśubhē tāmraṅ śarēṇābhihataṅ mukham.

śaradīvāmbujaṅ phullaṅ viddhaṅ bhāskararaśminā৷৷5.44.8৷৷


śarēṇa by an arrow, abhihatam struck, tāmram reddish, tat his, mukham face, śaradi in autumn, bhāskaraśminā with Sun's radiance, viddham hit, phullam blown, ambujamiva like a lotus, śuśubhē appeared.

His red face struck by an arrow appeared like a full-blown lotus in autumn season hit by the rays of the Sun.
tattasya raktaṅ raktēna rañjitaṅ śuśubhē mukham.

yathākāśē mahāpadmaṅ siktaṅ candanabindubhiḥ৷৷5.44.9৷৷


raktēna by blood, rañjitam glowing, raktam red, tasya his, tat that, mukham face, candanabindubhiḥ with sandal drops, siktam sprinkled, ākāśē in the sky, mahāpadmaṅ yathā like a great lotus, śuśubhē looked bright.

His red face stained with blood was glowing bright like red lotus in the sky sprinkled with drops of red sandal.
cukōpa bāṇābhihatō rākṣasasya mahākapiḥ.

tataḥ pārśvē.tivipulāṅ dadarśa mahatīṅ śilām৷৷5.44.10৷৷


bāṇābhihataḥ struck by the shafts, mahākapiḥ great monkey, rākṣasasya of the demon, cukōpa enraged, tataḥ then, pārśvē lying beside, ativipulām huge, mahatīm on the ground, śilām rock, dadarśa he saw.

Struck by the shafts of the ogre, the great monkey was enraged and happened to see
a huge, heavy rock lying beside him on the ground.
tarasā tāṅ samutpāṭya cikṣēpa balavadbhalī.

tāṅ śarairdaśabhiḥ kruddhastāḍayāmāsa rākṣasaḥ৷৷5.44.11৷৷


balī a powerful one, tām that boulder, tarasā with vehemence, samutpāṭya having lifted, balavat with his strength, cikṣēpa hurled, rākṣasaḥ giant, kruddhaḥ angrily, tām that rock, daśabhiḥ with ten, śaraiḥ with arrows, tāḍayāmāsa smashed.

Powerful Hanuman with all vehemence lifted the rock and hurled it at the giant which he angrily smashed with ten arrows.
vipannaṅ karma taddṛṣṭvā hanumāṅścaṇḍavikramaḥ.

sālaṅ vipulamutpāṭya bhrāmayāmāsa vīryavān৷৷5.44.12৷৷


caṇḍavikramaḥ who had fierce power, vīryavān a warrior, hanumān Hanuman, tat that karma action, vipannam failed, dṛṣṭvā seeing, vipulam huge, sālam sala tree, utpāṭya pulled out, bhrāmayāmāsa whirled.

Hanuman, a strong, powerful and fierce warrior pulled out a sala tree and whirled it. Seeing that his attempt has failed.
bhrāmayantaṅ kapiṅ dṛṣṭvā sālavṛkṣaṅ mahābalam.

cikṣēpa subahūnbāṇānjambumālī mahābalaḥ৷৷5.44.13৷৷


mahābalaḥ mighty, jambumālī Jambumali, sālavṛkṣam sala tree, bhrāmayantam after whirling, mahābalam mighty, kapim monkey, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, subahūn many, bāṇān arrows, cikṣēpa fired.

Gigantic Jambumali seeing the mighty Hanuman whirling the sala tree fired many arrows at him.
sālaṅ caturbhiścicchēda vānaraṅ pañcabhirbhujē.

urasyēkēna bāṇēna daśabhistu stanāntarē৷৷5.44.14৷৷


sālam sala tree, caturbhiḥ with four, cicchēda cut off, vānaram vanara, pañcabhiḥ with five, bhujē on his arm, urasi on his chest, ēkēna bāṇēna with one arrow, stanāntarē in the hollow of the chest, daśabhiḥ with ten.

He struck the sala tree with four arows, the arm of Hanuman with five arrows, chest with one, the hollow of the chest with ten more arrows.
sa śaraiḥ pūritatanu: krōdhēna mahatā vṛtaḥ.

tamēva parighaṅ gṛhya bhrāmayāmāsa vēgitaḥ৷৷5.44.15৷৷


śaraiḥ arrows, pūritatanu: the body was filled, saḥ that, mahatā intense, krōdhēna with anger, vṛtaḥ endowed, vēgitaḥ speedily, taṅ parighamēva the same iron spear, gṛhya seized, bhrāmayāmāsa started whirling.

Hanuman filled with arrows all over his body, seized an iron spear (which he made use of in the initial battle) and impetuously spun it in intense anger.
ativēgō.tivēgēna bhrāmayitvā balōtkaṭaḥ.

parighaṅ pātayāmāsa jambumālērmahōrasi৷৷5.44.16৷৷


balōtkaṭaḥ of immeasurable strength, ativēgaḥ a hero of great speed, parigham iron spear, ativēgēna with great speed, bhrāmayitvā after turning round and round, jambumālēḥ on Jambumali, mahōrasi on the broad chest, pātayāmāsa hurled.

Hanuman of immeasurable strength hurled the iron spear after turning it round and round at high speed on the broad chest of Jambumali.
tasya caiva śirō nāsti na bāhū na ca jānunī.

na dhanurna rathō nāśvāstatrādṛśyanta nēṣavaḥ৷৷5.44.17৷৷


tatra there, tasya his, śiraḥ caiva even head, nāsti not there, bāhū shoulders, na not, jānunī knees, na not, dhanuḥ bow, na not, rathaḥ chariot, na not, aśvāḥ donkeys, horses, nādṛśyantaḥ not there to discern, iṣavaḥ na nothing was seen.

Neither his head could be discerned nor his arms, knees, nor bow, chariot nor donkeys. Nothing was seen.
sa hatassahasā tēna jambumālī mahābalaḥ.

papāta nihatō bhūmau cūrṇitāṅgavibhūṣaṇaḥ৷৷5.44.18৷৷


tēna by that blow, hataḥ killed, mahābalaḥ mighty, jambumālī Jambumali, sahasā inconsiderately, nihataḥ having been killed, cūrṇitāṅgavibhūṣaṇaḥ with his ornaments reduced to powder, bhūmau on the floor, papāta fell down.

Mighty Jambumali killed by that blow dropped down dead at once with his ornaments reduced to powder.
jambumāliṅ ca nihataṅ kiṅkarāṅśca mahābalān.

cukrōdha rāvaṇaśśutvā kōpasaṅraktalōcanaḥ৷৷5.44.19৷৷


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, jambumāliṅ ca even Jambumali, nihatam being klled, mahābalān of great strength, kiṅkarāṅśca and kinkaras also, śrutvā hearing, kōpasaṅraktalōcanaḥ blood-shot eyes, cukrōdha got enraged.

Ravana's eyes became blood-shot in anger when he heard about the death of Jambumali and of the strong army of kinkaras.
sa rōṣasaṅvartitatāmralōcanaḥ prahastaputtrē nihatē mahābalē.

amātyaputtrānativīryavikramān samādidēśāśu niśācarēśvaraḥ৷৷5.44.20৷৷


mahābalē who had great strength, prahastaputtrē Prahasta's son, nihatē killed, saḥ niśācarēśvaraḥ demon king, rōṣasaṅvartitatāmralōcanaḥ his eyes red and rolling in anger, āśu quickly, ativīryavikramān highly valiant wariors, amātyaputrān sons of ministers, samādidēśa commanded.

When the mighty son of Prahasta was killed, infuriated Ravana, his eyes red and rolling, commanded the highly valiant sons of ministers.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē catuścatvāriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fortyfourth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
