[Combat between Hanuman and Ravana's son, Indrajit -- Indrajit captures Hanuman by Brahmastra and gets him to Ravana]

tatastu rakṣōdhipatirmahātmā hanūmatākṣē nihatē kumārē.

manassamādhāya sadēvakalpaṅ samādidēśēndrajitaṅ sarōṣaḥ৷৷5.48.1৷৷


tataḥ then, mahātmā great, saḥ he,rakṣōdhipatiḥ demon king, hanūmatā by Hanuman, kumārē son, akṣē Aksha, nihatē was killed, sarōṣaḥ angry, manaḥ in mind, samādhāya controlled, dēvakalpam was like a god, indrajitam to Indrajit, samādidēśa ordered.

Thereafter the great demon king, mighty angry at the death of Aksha in the hands of Hanuman, controlled his feeling and ordered Indrajit who was like a godhead.
tvamastravicchastravidāṅ variṣṭhassurāsurāṇāmapi śōkadātā.

surēṣu sēndrēṣu ca dṛṣṭakarmā pitāmahārādhanasañcitāstraḥ৷৷5.48.2৷৷


tvam you are, astravit an expert in astras (missiles), śastravidām among the experts in the use of weapons, variṣṭhaḥ highly efficient, surāsurāṇāmapi for suras and asuras also, śōkadātā brought grief, sēndrēṣu including Indra, surēṣu among gods, dṛṣṭakarmā a warrior of proven ability, pitāmahārādhanasañcitāstraḥ propitiating grand father Brahma acquired many missiles.

"You are an expert in wielding astras (missiles) and foremost among the wielders of weapons. You are highly efficient. You have brought grief even to suras and asuras. You are a warrior of proven ability demonstrated in your war against the gods including Indra. By propitiating, (through penance), grandfather Brahma you have acquired many missiles.
tavāstrabalamāsādya sasurāḥ samarudgaṇāḥ.

na śēkussamarē sthātuṅ surēśvarasamāśritāḥ৷৷5.48.3৷৷


tava your, astrabalam strength of astras,āsādya attained, sasurāḥ including suras, samarudgaṇāḥ including Maruts, surēśvarasamāśritāḥ who are on Indra's side, samarē in war, sthātum to stand before you, na śēkuḥ not have the capacity.

"None could face you in war including Indra, Maruts and gods because of your skill and the power of your astras.
na kaścittriṣu lōkēṣu saṅyugēna gataśramaḥ.

bhujavīryābhiguptaśca tapasā cābhirakṣitaḥ৷৷5.48.4৷৷

dēśakālavibhāgajñastvamēva matisattamaḥ.


saṅyugēna in war, gataśramaḥ not experienced fatigue, kaścit some one, triṣu lōkēṣu in the three worlds,na not, matisattamaḥ most intelligent, tvamēva you alone, bhujavīryābhiguptaśca protected by the strength of your arms, tapasā with the power of austerity, abhirakṣitaḥ well-protected, dēśakālavibhāgajñaḥ aware of the proper place and time of action.

"Excepting you there is none who has not experienced fatigue in war in the three worlds. You alone are intelligent in fighting. You are protected by the strength of your arms and power of austerity. You are aware of the proper place and time of action.
na tē.styaśakyaṅ samarēṣu karmaṇā na tē.styakāryaṅ matipūrvamantraṇē.

na sō.sti kaścittriṣu saṅgrahēṣu vai na vēda yastē.strabalaṅ balaṅ ca tē৷৷5.48.5৷৷


samarēṣu in war, karmaṇā by the task, tē to you, aśakyam not possible, nāsti there is nothing, matipūrvamantraṇē wise counsel, tē to you, akāryam impossible act, nāsti not, triṣu in the three, saṅgrahēṣu in making by mantra an astra return, yaḥ such a person, tē to you, astrabalam strength of your weapons, tē balaṅ ca your own strength, na vēda does not know, saḥ he, kaścit none, nāsti not.

"Nothing is impossible for you in war. You do not consider with your wise judgment any action unfit for undertaking. There is none in all the three worlds who is unaware of the strength of your weapons and your power to recall through Mantra the weapon
you have discharged.
mamānurūpaṅ tapasō balaṅ ca tē parākramaścāstrabalaṅ ca saṅyugē.

na tvāṅ samāsādya raṇāvamardē manaśśramaṅ gacchati niścitārtham৷৷5.48.6৷৷


tē to you, tapasaḥ of penance, balam power, mama anurūpam equal to me, saṅyugē in fight, parākramaśca valiance, balaṅ ca strength, raṇāvamarthē in war, tvām you, samāsādya engaged, manaḥ mind, niścitārtham sure of action (victory), śramam despair, na gacchati does not experience.

"The power of your penance, your valour and your ability to discharge astras in war is equal only to mine. I am not bothered about the consequences of war you wage because your victory is certain.
nihatāḥ kiṅkarāssarvē jambumālī ca rākṣasaḥ.

amātyaputrā vīrāśca pañca sēnāgrayāyinaḥ৷৷5.48.7৷৷

balāni susamṛddhāni sāśvanāgarathāni ca.


sarvē all, kiṅkarāḥ kinkaras, jambumālī Jambumali, rākṣasaśca ogres also, vīrāḥ heroes, amātyaputrāḥ sons of ministers, pañca five, sēnāgrayāyinaḥ army generals, nihatāḥ killed, susamṛddhāni well equipped, sāśvanāgarathāni ca including horses, elephants and chariots, balāni ca armies also.

sahōdarastē dayitaḥ kumārō.kṣaśca sūditaḥ৷৷5.48.8৷৷

na hi tēṣvēva mē sārō yastvayyariniṣūdana.


tē your, dayitaḥ dear, sahōdaraḥ brother, kumāraḥ akṣaśca even young Aksha, sūditaḥ killed, ariniṣūdana O scourge of enemies, mē to me, tvayi in you, yaḥ such, sāraḥ real faith, tēṣvēva at
them, na hi not there indeed.

"Your dear young brother Aksha is killed. O scourage of enemies! I do not have the faith in them as I have in you.
idaṅ hi dṛṣṭvā matimanmahadbalaṅ kapēḥ prabhāvaṅ ca parākramaṅ ca.

tvamātmanaścāpi samīkṣya sāraṅ kuruṣva vēgaṅ svabalānurūpam৷৷5.48.9৷৷


matiman O Intelligent one, tvam you, kapēḥ monkey's, idam this, mahat great, balam strength, prabhāvaṅ ca power also, parākramaṅ ca and valour, dṛṣṭvā observing, ātmanaḥ your own, sāraṅ cāpi strength also, samīkṣya considering, svabalānurūpam in keeping with your own strength, vēgam quickly, kuruṣva do.

"O intelligent warrior! measure the strength, power and valour of the monkey and your own strength carefully. Exercise your own strength and speed accordingly.
balāvamarthastayi sannikṛṣṭē yathā gatē śāmyati śāntaśatrau.

tathā samīkṣyātmabalaṅ paraṅ ca samārabhasvāstravidāṅ variṣṭha৷৷5.48.10৷৷


astravidām among experts in archery, variṣṭha of extraordinary merit, tvayi you, sannikṛṣṭē approaching, śāntaśatrau subduer of enemy, gatē going there, balāvamarthaḥ judging the strength, yathā in a manner, śāmyati without causing destruction, tathā that way, ātmabalam your own strength, paraṅ ca and enemy's, samīkṣya observing, samārabhasva start the battle.

"O warrior of extraordinary merit among the wielders of astras ! asses your strength approach the enemy in a manner by which he is subdued without causing further destruction to our army. Carefully measure your own strength and your enemy's before you start fighting.
na vīrasēnā gaṇaśōcyavanti na vajramādāya viśālasāram.

na mārutasyāsya gatēḥ pramāṇaṅ na cāgnikalpaḥ karaṇēna hantum৷৷5.48.11৷৷


vīra hero, gaṇaśa: large, sēnāḥ armies, cyavanti na do not go, viśālasāram having extraordinary vigour,vajram thunderbolt, ādāya seizing, na not, asya his, gatēḥ of speed, mārutasya of Maruta's, na pramāṇam no match, agnikalpaḥ like sacrificial fire, karaṇēna any weapon, hantum to destroy, na not.

"O hero! take no large army as it is futile with this monkey endowed with extraordinary vigour. Even a thunderbolt can do nothing. He is like the wind and has no match in speed. He is like the sacrificial fire who cannot be destroyed by weapons.
tamēvamarthaṅ prasamīkṣya samyak svakarmasāmyāddhi samāhitātmā.

smaraṅśca divyaṅ dhanuṣō.stravīryaṅ vrajākṣataṅ karma samārabhasva৷৷5.48.12৷৷


tam him, ēvam in that way, artham matter, samyak properly, prasamīkṣya assess, svakarmasāmyāt person of good judgement, samāhitātmā with singleminded attention, dhanuṣaḥ of the bow, divyam divine, astravīryam strength of your astras, smaraṅśca recollecting, vraja move, karma the act, akṣatam without being destroyed in the middle, samārabhasva start.

na khalviyaṅ matiśśrēṣṭhā yattvāṅ samprēṣayāmyaham.

iyaṅ ca rājadharmāṇāṅ kṣatriyasya matirmatā৷৷5.48.13৷৷


aham I, tvām you, samprēṣayāmi iti yat this way sending you to war is not good, iyaṅ matiḥ this I think, śrēṣṭhā the best, na khalu not certainly, iyam this, rājadharmāṇām in accordance with state craft, kṣatriyasya for a kshatriya, matiḥ thought, matā approved.

"I am reluctant to send you to war in the circumstances. But you are the best choice for me. However, certainly this is the duty of a kshatriya who follows the science of polity. Hence I am sending you.
nānāśastrēṣu saṅgrāmē vaiśāradyamarindama.

avaśyamēva bōddhavyaṅ kāmyaśca vijayō raṇē৷৷5.48.14৷৷


ariṅdama subduer of foes, saṅgrāmē in battle, nānāśastrēṣu with many kinds of weapons, vaiśāradyam efficient, avaśyamēva ultimately, bōddhavyam aware, raṇē in war, vijayaśca only victory, kāmyaḥ seek.

"O subduer of enemies! you are capable of handling different kinds of weapons. Therefore, understand that I seek only your ultimate triumph in war.
tataḥ pitustadvacanaṅ niśamya pradakṣiṇaṅ dakṣasutaprabhāvaḥ.

cakāra bhartāramadīnasattvō raṇāya vīraḥ pratipannabuddhiḥ৷৷5.48.15৷৷


tataḥ then, dakṣasutaprabhāvaḥ powerful like the son of Daksha, vīraḥ warrior, pituḥ father's, tat vacanam those words, niśamya having heard, adīnasattvaḥ who is never distressed, raṇāya in war, pratipannabuddhiḥ prepared his mind, bhartāram by the king, pradakṣiṇaṅ cakāra went round with respect.

Hearing the father's words (of exhortation), he, who is never distressed at the prospect of war decided to seek the battle as he was powerful like the son of Daksha, and went round his father with respect.
tatastai ssvagaṇairiṣṭairindrajit pratipūjitaḥ.

yuddhōddhataḥ kṛtōtsāhassaṅgrāmaṅ pratyapadyata৷৷5.48.16৷৷


tataḥ then, yaddhōddhataḥ rushed forth for war, indrajit Indrajit, iṣṭaiḥ by people who loved him, taiḥ svagaṇaiḥ by his own kith and kin, pratipūjitaḥ was honoured with reverence, kṛtōtsāhaḥ became vigorous, saṅgrāmam for war, pratyapadyata went ahead.

Having been honoured by his own kith and kin who loved him, Indrajit rushed forth for war with martial vigour.
śrīmānpadmapalāśākṣō rākṣasādhipatēssutaḥ.

nirjagāma mahātējāssamudra iva parvasu৷৷5.48.17৷৷


śrīmān illustrious, padmapalāśākṣaḥ eyes of lotus petals, mahātējāḥ highly resplendent, rākṣasādhipatēḥ sutaḥ son of the lord of demons, parvasu on a full-moon day, samudraḥ iva like the turbulent ocean, nirjagāma came out.

When the illustrious son of Ravana, the highly Indrajit resplendent with eyes of lotus petals marched ahead he looked like the turbulent ocean on a full-moon day.
sa pakṣirājōpamatulyavēgairvyāḷaiścaturbhiḥ sitatīkṣaṇadaṅṣṭraiḥ.

rathaṅ samāyuktamasahayavēgaṅ samārurōhēndrajidindrakalpaḥ৷৷5.48.18৷৷


indrakalpaḥ like Indra, saḥ indrajit that Indrajit, pakṣirājōpamatulyavēgaiḥ equal to Garuda the king of birds in speed, sitatīkṣaṇadaṅṣṭraiḥ that had sharp big white teeth, caturbhiḥ four, vyāghai: with tigers, samāyuktam yoked, asahayavēgam very high speed, ratham chariot, samārurōha ascended.

Like Indra, Indrajit ascended the chariot (which had the standard of Indra as it was seized from him as a token of his having conquered Indra) yoked to four sharp-toothed tigers. It moved in swiftness vying with Garuda, the king of birds in speed.
sa rathī dhanvināṅ śrēṣṭhaḥ śastrajñōstravidāṅ varaḥ.

rathēnābhiyayau kṣipraṅ hanumānyatra sō.bhavat৷৷5.48.19৷৷


rathī charioteer, dhanvinām among wielders of bows, śrēṣṭhaḥ best, śastrajñaḥ in the knowledge of archery, astravidām among exports in weaponry, varaḥ great, saḥ that, saḥ hanumān that Hanuman, yatra whichever, abhavat stationed, śīghram quickly, rathēna by his chariot, abhiyayau marched.

Mounted on the chariot, Indrajit, the best in archery and an expert in weaponry went quickly to the place where that great Hanuman was stationed.
sa tasya rathanirghōṣaṅ jyāsvanaṅ kārmukasya ca.

niśamya harivīrō.sau saṅprahṛṣṭatarō.bhavat৷৷5.48.20৷৷


saḥ asau he also, harivīraḥ leader of monkeys, tasya his, radhanirghōṣam rumbling of the chariot, kārmukasya of his bow, jyāsvanaṅ ca sound of his bow, niśamya after hearing, saṅprahṛṣṭaḥ tara: more happy, abhavat became.

The leader of the monkey also became happier on hearing the rumbling (of the chariot) and the twang of Indrajit's bow-string.
sumahaccāpamādāya śitaśalyāṅśca sāyakān.

hanumantamabhiprētya jagāma raṇapaṇḍitaḥ৷৷5.48.21৷৷


raṇapaṇḍitaḥ adept in warfare, sumahat highly powerful, cāpam bow, śitaśalyān sharp-edged ones, sāyakān arrows, ādāya picking, hanumantam Hanuman, abhiprētya having aimed at, jagāma went forward

Indrajit who was an adept in warfare, picked his highly powerful bow and aimed his sharp-edged arrow at Hanuman.
tasmiṅstataḥ saṅyati jātaharṣē raṇāya nirgacchati cāpapāṇau.

diśaśca sarvāḥ kaluṣā babhūvu rmṛgāśca raudrā bahudhā vinēduḥ৷৷5.48.22৷৷


tataḥ then, saṅyati for war, jātaharṣē feeling happy, tasmin with him, cāpapāṇau when he held bow in his hand, raṇāya for war, nirgacchati was going forth, sarvāḥ all, diśaḥ quarters, kaluṣāḥ gloomy, babhūvuḥ, appeared raudrāḥ wild, mṛgāśca animals, bahudhā in various ways, vinēduḥ howled

When he sallied forth happily holding a bow full of passion for war, darkness prevailed in all quarters and it became gloomy. Beasts began to howl in various frightful ways.
samāgatāstatra tu nāgayakṣā maharṣayaścakracarāśca siddhāḥ.

nabhassamāvṛtya ca pakṣisaṅghā vinēduruccaiḥ paramaprahṛṣṭāḥ৷৷5.48.23৷৷


tatra there, samāgatāḥ having assembled, nāgayakṣāḥ Nagas and Yakshas, cakracarāḥ those who go round the orbits, maharṣayaḥ seers, siddhāśca Siddhas, pakṣisaṅghāḥ flocks of birds, nabhaḥ in the sky, samāvṛtya collected, paramaprahṛṣṭāḥ very happy, uccaiḥ loudly, vinēduḥ screeched

(To see the combat) the Nagas, Yakshas, seers and Siddhas who move round the heavenly orbits assembled in the sky. The birds collected in flocks in the sky and screeched loudly and happily.
āyāntaṅ sarathaṅ dṛṣṭvā tūrṇamindrajitaṅ kapiḥ.

vinanāda mahānādaṅ vyavardhata ca vēgavān৷৷5.48.24৷৷


kapiḥ monkey, tūrṇam speedily, āyāntam coming, saratham that chariot, indrajitam Indrajit, dṛṣṭavā after seeing, mahānādam great sound, vinanāda made, vēgavān who was endowed with speed, vyavardhata ca enlarged his body

Hanuman of very high speed enlarged his body and roared, perceiving Indrajit's chariot coming swiftly.
indrajittu rathaṅ divyamāsthitaścitrakārmukaḥ.

dhanurviṣphārayāmāsa taṭidūrjitannissvanam৷৷5.48.25৷৷


indrajittu Indrajit on his part, divyam divine, ratham chariot, āsthitaḥ seated, citrakārmukaḥ wonderful bow, taṭidūrjitannissvanam rumbling with lightning speed, dhanuḥ bow, viṣphārayāmāsa twanged

Indrajit on his part sat in his divine chariot holding a wonderful bow and in a lightning speed twanged it.
tatassamētāvatitīkṣṇavēgau mahābalau tau raṇanirviśaṅkau.

kapiśca rakṣōdhipatēstanūjaḥ surāsurēndrāviva baddhavairau৷৷5.48.26৷৷


tataḥ then, atitīkṣṇavēgau very fast in speed, mahābalau mighty, raṇanirviśaṅkau fearless in war, tau those two, kapiśca vanara and, rakṣōdhipatēḥ of the demon king, tanūjaḥ son, baddhavairau inimical to each other, surāsurēndrāviva like sura and asura, samētau met

Then the son of the demon king and Hanuman, both very fast in speed, mighty and powerful, fearless in war and like sura and asura closed in upon each other.
sa tasya vīrasya mahārathasya dhanuṣmataḥ saṅyati sammatasya.

śarapravēgaṅ vyahanatpravṛddha ścacāra mārgē piturapramēyaḥ৷৷5.48.27৷৷


apramēyaḥ immeasurable, saḥ he, pravṛddhaḥ increased, mahārathasya magnificent chariot-warrior, dhanuṣmataḥ bowman, saṅyati in battle, saṅmatasya efficient, tasya his vīrasya hero's, śarapravēgam the speeed of arrows, vyahanat escaped, pituḥ father's, mārgē path, cacāra went

Hanuman of immeasurable strength heaved himself to a huge proprtion and went moving on the path of his father (wind-god) rendering useless the extraordinary speed of the arrows of Indrajit, who was great in chariot warfare, and an efficient archer.
tataśśarānāyatatīkṣṇaśalyān supatriṇaḥ kāñcanacitrapuṅkhān.

mumōca vīraḥ paravīrahantā susannatān vajranipātavēgān৷৷5.48.28৷৷


tataḥ then, paravīrahantā a slayer of enemy warriors, vīraḥ hero, āyatatīkṣaṇaśalyān long and sharp-pointed arrows, supatriṇaḥ with fine feathers, kāñcanacitrapuṅsvā with gold tips touching the bow-string, susannatān a little bent at the tips, vajranipātavēgān which had the speed of lightning, śarān arrows, mumōca discharged

Then the heroic Indrajit, slayer of enemy warriors, discharged long arrows that were fixed with find feathers with sharp-pointed gold tips, bent a little at the tip touching the bow string, as swift as lightning.
tatastu tatsyandananissvanaṅ ca mṛdaṅgabhērīpaṭahasvanaṅ ca.

vikṛṣyamāṇasya ca kārmukasya niśamya ghōṣaṅ punarutpapāta৷৷5.48.29৷৷


tataḥ then, saḥ he, tatsyandanniḥsvanaṅ ca rumbling of the chariot and, mṛdaṅgabhērīpaṭahasvanaṅ ca beating sound of mrudangas, bheris and patahas, vikṛṣyamāṇasya drawn, kārmukasya of the bow, ghōṣam loud sound, niśamya percieving, punaḥ again, utpapāta rose up

Thereupon, hearing the rumbling of the chariot, the sounds of mrudangas, bheris, and patahas drawing towards him, and percieving the loud twang of the bow (of Indrajit) Hanuman sprang up again.
śarāṇāmantarēṣvāśu vyavartata mahākapiḥ.

haristasyābhilakṣyasya mōghayanlakṣyasaṅgraham৷৷5.48.30৷৷


mahākapiḥ great monkey, hariḥ tawny one, āśu quickly, abhilakṣyasya aiming at target, tasya his, lakṣyasaṅgraham hosts of aims, mōghayan while rendering futile, śarāṇām arrows,antarēṣu between spaces, vyavartata moved

The great tawny monkey moved quickly between spaces of arrows that were aimed at him rendering hosts of Indrajit's targets futile.
śarāṇāmagratastasya punaḥ samabhivartata.

prasārya hastau hanumānutpapātānilātmajaḥ৷৷5.48.31৷৷


anilātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, punaḥ again, tasya his, śarāṇām by his arrows, agrataḥ in front, samabhivartata stationed, hastau hands, prasārya having stretched, utpapāta jumped

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god again stood facing the arrows directly stretching his hands and jumped (into the air).
tāvubhau vēgasampannau raṇakarmaviśāradau.

sarvabhūtamanōgrāhi cakraturyuddhamuttamam৷৷5.48.32৷৷


vēgasampannau both endowed with speed, raṇakarmaviśāradau two experts in warfare, tau ubhau both, sarvabhūtamanōgrāhif captivated the minds of all creatures,uttamam best, yuddham war, cakratuḥ fought

Both the warriors endowed with speed and skill in warfare carried on the fight which captivated the minds of all creatures.
hanumatō vēda na rākṣasō.ntaraṅ na mārutistasya mahātmanō.ntaram.

parasparaṅ nirviṣahau babhūvatuḥ samētya tau dēvasamānavikramau৷৷5.48.33৷৷


rākṣasaḥ giant, hanūmataḥ of Hanuman, antaram way to hit, na vēda did not know, mārutiḥ Maruti, mahātmanaḥ of the great self, tasya his, na not, dēvasamānavikramau equal to gods in valour, tau both, samētya met, parasparam with each other, nirviṣahau unable to bear with each other, babhūvatuḥ became.

The demon did not find a way to hit Hanuman. Maruti also found no opportunity to hit great Indrajit. Both of them being equal to gods in valour became too much to each other in war. (Both of them moved at meteoric speed making it difficult to aim at the enemy.)
tatastu lakṣyē sa vihanyamānē śarēṣvamōghēṣu ca saṅpatatsu.

jagāma cintāṅ mahatīṅ mahātmā samādhisaṅyōgasamāhitātmā৷৷5.48.34৷৷


tataḥ then, lakṣyē when aim, vihanyamānē missing, amōghēṣu infallible, śarēṣu arrows, saṅpatatsu released, mahātmā great, samādhisaṅyōgasamāhitātmā the great warrior entered a meditative mood with great concentration saḥ that, mahatīm very, cintām thought, jagāma felt

Indrajit's infallible arrows missed Hanuman. Then the great warrior became perplexed and started thinking seriously within himself entering into a reflective mood.
tatō matiṅ rākṣasarājasūnu ścakāra tasmin harivīramukhyē.

avadhyatāṅ tasya kapēssamīkṣya kathaṅ nigacchēditi nigrahārtham৷৷5.48.35৷৷


tataḥ then, rākṣasarājasūnuḥ son of the demon king, tasya of that kapēḥ of vanara, avadhyatām that should not be killed, samīkṣya observing, nigrahārtham in order to catch him, katham how, nigacchēt he may not come, iti thus, tasmin in him, harivīramukhyē at the monkey, matim mind, cakāra resolved

Then Indrajit, son of the demon king, thinking that a vanara should not be killed started considering other means of catching hm.
tataḥ paitāmahaṅ vīraḥ sō.stramastravidāṅ varaḥ.

saṅdadhē sumahattējā: taṅ haripravaraṅ prati৷৷5.48.36৷৷


tataḥ then, vīraḥ hero, astravidām among masters of weapons, varaḥ excellent, sumahātējāḥ glorious, saḥ he, taṅ him, haripravaraṅ prati towards foremost of monkeys, paitāmaham Grandfather Brahma's, astram weapon, saṅdadhē directed

Then the heroic master of weapons, an excellent and glorious warrior directed the Brahmastram towards the foremost of monkeys.
avadhyō.yamiti jñātvā tamastrēṇāstratattvavit.

nijagrāha mahābāhurmārutātmajamindrajit৷৷5.48.37৷৷


astratattvavit a knower of the secrets of all missiles, mahābāhuḥ strong-armed, indrajit Indrajit, ayam this, avadhyaḥ not be killed, iti this, jñātvā realising, tam him, mārutātmajam son of the Wind-god, astrēṇa by the divine weapon-Brahmastram, nijagrāha caught

Indrajit, the strong-armed hero, who knew the secrets of all missiles, realising that the son of the Wind-god cannot be killed caught him by the divine weapon of Brahma (Brahmastram).
tēna baddhastatō.strēṇa rākṣasēna sa vānaraḥ.

abhavannirvicēṣṭaśca papāta sa mahītalē ৷৷5.48.38৷৷


tataḥ then, rākṣasēna by the demon, astrēṇa by his weapon, baddhaḥ bound, saḥ vānaraḥ that Hanuman, nirvicēṣṭaḥ unable to move, abhavat became, saḥ he, mahītalē on the ground, papāta fell

Then Hanuman bound by the weapon of the demon was unable to move and fell on the ground.
tatō.tha buddhvā sa tadastrabandhaṅ prabhōḥ prabhāvādvigatātmavēgaḥ.

pitāmahānugrahamātmanaśca vicintayāmāsa haripravīraḥ৷৷5.48.39৷৷


tataḥ then, atha and, saḥ haripravīraḥ that monkey leader, tadastrabandhaṅm bond of that astram, buddhvā after realising, prabhōḥ of the Lord, prabhāvāt by the grace, vigatātmavēgaḥ finding his speed arrested, ātmanaḥ for me, pitāmahānugraham the boon of lord Brahma, vicintayāmāsa started thinking

The monkey leader realised that his speed was arrested by the power of the lord Brahma, by the strength of the bond of Brahmastram. He then recalled lord Brahma's boon to him.
tata ssvāyambuvairmantrairbrahmāstramabhimantritam.

hanumāṅścintayāmāsa varadānaṅ pitāmahāt৷৷5.48.40৷৷


tataḥ then, hanumān Hanuman, svāyaṅbhuvaiḥ by Brahma the creator, mantrai mantra, abhimantritam appiled mantra, brahmāstram Brahmastram, pitāmahāt grand sire, varadānam boon, cintayāmāsa started thinking

Hanuman realised that it was by invoking creator Brahma and applying the mantra that he was caught by Brahmastram. On that occasion he started thinking of the boon given to him by Grandsire Brahma :
na mē.strabandhasya ca śaktirasti vimōkṣaṇē lōkagurōḥ prabhāvāt.

ityēva matvā vihitō.strabandhō mayātmayōnēranuvartitavyaḥ৷৷5.48.41৷৷


lōkagurōḥ of the Guru of the universe, prabhāvāt by the effect, astrabandhasya of the bondage with astra, vimōkṣaṇē to release, mē to me, śaktiḥ power, nāsti not possible, ityēva thus only, matvā thinking, vihitaḥ ordered, ātmayōnēḥ by himself, astrabandha: bondage of astra, mayā by me, anuvartitavyaḥ should be obeyed

'I deem it an effect of the power of Brahma. It is not possiblle for me to free myself due to the power of the great lord presiding over the universe through the astra. It should be obeyed'.
sa vīryamastrasya kapirvicārya pitāmahānugrahamātmanaśca.

vimōkṣaśaktiṅ paricintayitvā pitāmahājñāmanuvartatē sma৷৷5.48.42৷৷


saḥ kapiḥ that Hanuman, astrasya astra's, vīryam power, vicārya reflecting, ātmanaḥ in himself, pitāmahānugrahaṅ ca by the favour of Brahma, vimōkṣaśaktim the power of liberation from bondage, paricintayitvā recalling about, pitāmahājñām by the order of Brahma, anuvartatē sma he obeyed

Reflecting within himself about the power of the astra, Hanuman recalled Braham's favour to him. He recalled his own power to liberate himself from the Brahmastra and resolved to abide by the order of Brahma.
astrēṇāpi hi baddhasya bhayaṅ mama na jāyatē.

pitāmahamahēndrābhyāṅ rakṣitasyānilēna ca৷৷5.48.43৷৷


pitāmahamahēndrābhyām both by Brahma and Indra, anilēna ca and by the Wind-god, rakṣitasya for me being protected, mē to me, astrēṇa by astra, baddhasyāpi even though bound, bhayam fear, na jāyatē not having

'Even though I am bound by the astra, I have the protection of both Brahma and Indra as well as the Wind-god. Hence there is no cause for apprension.
grahaṇē cāpi rakṣōbhirmahanmē guṇadarśanam.

rākṣasēndrēṇa saṅvādastasmādgṛhṇantu māṅ parē৷৷5.48.44৷৷


rakṣōbhiḥ by the demon, grahaṇē cāpi if I am caught, mē me, mahat great, guṇadarśanam will have the opportunity to see, rākṣasēndrēṇa of the demon lord, saṅvādaḥ to discuss, tasmāt therefore, mām to me, parē enemies, gṛhṇantu take.

'If I am caught by the demon I will have the opportunity to see the demon lord. Therefore, let me be caught by my enemies'.
sa niścitārthaḥ paravīrahantā samīkṣyakārī vinivṛttacēṣṭaḥ.

paraiḥ prasahyābhigatairnigṛhya nanāda taistrai: paribhartsyamānaḥ৷৷5.48.45৷৷


paravīrahantā killer of enemy warriors, samīkṣyakārī one who assesses before he acts, saḥ he, niścitāraḥ resolved, vinivṛttacēṣṭaḥ his power of movement arrested, abhigataiḥ went, taistrai: slowly and slowly, paraiḥ by enemies, prasahya forcibly, nigṛhya siezed, paribhartsamānaḥ abused, nanāda roared

Hanuman, a destroyer of enemies, who assesses before he acts, resolved (to submit to the ordinance of Brahma), to be silent (the power of his movement affected). When the enemy forces came to him slowly and slowly, siezed him forcibly and abused him, he roared.
tatastaṅ rākṣasā dṛṣṭvā nirvicēṣṭamariṅdamam.

Then the ogres had Hanuman, the subduer of enemies, who made no effort to move, bound with hemp rope and bark robes.
sa rōcayāmāsa paraiśca bandhanaṅ prasahya vīrairabhinigrahaṅ ca.

kautūhalānmāṅ yadi rākṣasēndrō draṣṭuṅ vyavasyēditi niścitārthaḥ৷৷5.48.47৷৷


rākṣasēndraḥ demon king, mām me, kautūhalāt out of curiosity, draṣṭum to see, vyavasyēdyadi if he decides, iti this way, niścitārthaḥ decided, saḥ he parai: by the enemies, bandhanama bondage, vīraiḥ by warriors, prasahya by force, abhinigrahaṅ ca even capture also, rōcayāmāsa enjoyed

Bound by the enemy warriors, Hanuman, decided to bear all humiliations, thinking, 'May be the demon king might come to see me out of curiosity if he is so disposed'.
sa baddhastēna valkēna vimuktō.strēṇa vīryavān.

astrabandhaḥ sa cānyaṅ hi na bandhamanuvartatē৷৷5.48.48৷৷


tēna by that, valkēna with bark, baddhaḥ tied, vīryavān valiant, saḥ he, astrēṇa by (Brahm) astra, vimuktaḥ set free, saḥ that, astrabandhaḥ bondage of astra, anyam other, bandham bondage, na anuvartatē hi not tolerate

On being bound by bark ropes Hanuman was set free from the bond of Brahmastra, since the bondage of Brahmastra does not tolerate another ordinary bondage.
athēndrajittu drumacīrabaddhaṅ vicārya vīraḥ kapisattamaṅ tam.

vimuktamastrēṇa jagāma cintāṅ nānyēna baddhō hyanuvartatē.stram৷৷5.48.49৷৷


atha and then, vīraḥ hero, indrajittu Indrajit, drumacīrabaddham bound by bark rope, tam him, kapisattamam foremost of vanaras, astrēṇa by astra, vimuktam released, vicārya thinking, cintām thought, jagāma started, anyēna by other, baddhaḥ bound, astram astra, nānu vartatē hi indeed does not follow.

Then the heroic Indrajit coming to know that the foremost of the monkeys bound by bark ropes was released from the bondage of Brahmastra, thought, 'indeed the divine weapon does not tolerate other bonds, so the vanara is released'.
ahō mahatkarma kṛtaṅ nirarthakamkaṅ na rākṣasairmantragatirvimṛṣṭā.

punaśca mantrē vihatē.stramanyatpravartatē saṅśayitā ssmasarvē৷৷5.48.50৷৷


ahō Alas!, mahat great, karma action, nirarthakam wasted, kṛtam done, rākṣasaiḥ by the ogres, mantragatiḥ impact of mantra, na vimṛṣṭāḥ is not considered, mantrē when mantra, vihatē is ineffective, anyat other, astram astra, na pravartatē works, sarvē all, saṅśayitāḥ our lives will be at risk, sma us

astrēṇa hanumānmuktō nātmānamavabudhyata.

kṛṣyamāṇastu rakṣōbhi stauśca bandhairnipīḍitaḥ৷৷5.48.51৷৷


astrēṇa by Astra, muktaḥ was released, hanumān Hanuman, taiḥ those, rakṣōbhiḥ by the ogres, kṛṣyamāṇaḥ dragged, bandhai: was tied, nipīḍitaḥ hurting him, ātmānam himself, na avabudhyata he did not know

Though binding and dragging by the ogres had hurt Hanuman, he on his part did not know that he had been released from Brahmastra.
hanyamānastataḥ krūrai rākṣasaiḥ kāṣṭhamuṣṭibhiḥ.

samīpaṅ rākṣasēndrasya prākṛṣyata sa vānaraḥ৷৷5.48.52৷৷


tataḥ then, saḥ vānaraḥ that vanara, krūraiḥ by the cruel ones, rākṣasaiḥ by rakshasas, kāṣṭhamuṣṭibhiḥ with sticks and fists, hanyamānaḥ beaten, rākṣasēndrasya to the lord of rakshasas, samīpam near, prākṛṣyata was dragged

The cruel ogres hit Hanuman with sticks and fists and dragged him to the presence of the demon lord.
athēndrajittaṅ prasamīkṣya muktamastrēṇa baddhaṅ drumacīrasūtraiḥ.

nyadarśayattatra mahābalaṅ taṅ haripravīraṅ sagaṇāya rājñē৷৷5.48.53৷৷


atha and then, drumacīrasūtraiḥ with bark ropes, baddham bound, tam him, astrēṇa by the astra, muktam released, prasamīkṣya seeing, indrajit Indrajit, mahābalam who had great power, taṅ haripravīram foremost monkey, tatra there, sagaṇāya including the courtiers, rājñē king in the royal assembly, nyadarśayat presented

Then Indarjit, seeing the powerful Hanuman, the foremost of monkeys who was released from the Brahmastra, still bound by bark ropes, presented him to the ogres and their master in the royal assembly.
taṅ mattamiva mātaṅgaṅ baddhaṅ kapivarōttamam.

rākṣasā rākṣasēndrāya rāvaṇāya nyavēdayan৷৷5.48.54৷৷


mattam in rut, mātaṅgamiva elephant like, baddham bound, kapivarōttamam best of monkeys, tam him, rākṣasāḥ ogres, rākṣasēndrāya to the demon king, rāvaṇāya to Ravana, nyavēdayan presented

The ogres presented the best of monkeys, Hanuman looking like an elephant in rut to Ravana, the demon king.
kō.yaṅ kasya kutōvātra kiṅ kāryaṅ kō vyapāśrayaḥ.

iti rākṣasavīrāṇāṅ tatra sañjajñirē kathāḥ৷৷5.48.55৷৷


ayam this, kaḥ who is, kasya his, kutō vā whose son is he, atra here, kim why, kāryam task, vyapāśrayaḥ to whom, kaḥ what, iti this, tatra there, rākṣasavīrāṇām heroic demons, kathāḥ talked about him, sañjajñirē talked among themselves

"Who is he? Whose son is he? Why has he come here? Where has he come from? What business does he have here?" Thus the heroic demons talked among themselves.
hanyatāṅ dahyatāṅ vāpi bhakṣyatāmiti cāparē.

rākṣasāstatra saṅkruddhā: parasparamathābruvan৷৷5.48.56৷৷


atha and then, aparē others, rākṣasāḥ rakshasas, saṅkṛddhāḥ very angry, hanyatām kill him, dahyatāṅ cāpi he may be burnt also, bhakṣyatām devoure, iti this way, parasparam one another, abruvan spoke

Thereafter other ogres angrily said 'Let us kill him, burn him or otherwise devour him,' thus they spoke to one another.
atītya mārgaṅ sahasā mahātmā sa tatra rakṣōdhipapādamūlē.

dadarśa rājñaḥ paricāravṛddhān gṛhaṅ mahāratnavibhūṣitaṅ ca৷৷5.48.57৷৷


mahātmā great self, saḥ he, sahasā quickly, mārgam the path, atītya after crossing, tatra there, rājñaḥ of the king, mahāratnavibhūṣitam adorned with precious gems, gṛham palace, rakṣōdhipapādamūlē near the feet of the king, paricāravṛddhān the aged and experienced ministers of the king, dadarśa saw

The great Hanuman moving quickly and crossing the path came near the feet of the king. He saw the aged and experienced ministers of the king and the palace of the king adorned with precious gems.
sa dadarśa mahātējā rāvaṇaḥ kapisattamam.

rakṣōbhirvikṛtākāraiḥ kṛṣyamāṇamitastataḥ৷৷5.48.58৷৷


mahātējāḥ resplendent one, saḥ rāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, vikṛtākāraiḥ by ugly looking ones, rakṣōbhiḥ by the rakshasas, itastataḥ here and there, kṛṣyamāṇam being dragged, kapisattamam foremost monkey, dadarśa saw

Resplendent Ravana saw the ogres of ugly appearance dragging the foremost of the monkeys here and there.
rākṣasādhipatiṅ cāpi dadarśa kapisattamaḥ.

tējōbalasamāyuktaṅ tapantamiva bhāskaram৷৷5.48.59৷৷


kapisattamaḥ ca and the best of monkeys, tējōbalasamāyuktam one who had splendour and strength, tapantam radiating brilliance, bhāskaram iva like the Sun, rākṣasādhipatim king of demons, dadarśa saw

Hanuman the best of monkeys also saw the demon king who had both splendour and strength, radiating brilliance like the Sun.
sarōṣasamvartitatāmradṛṣṭirdaśānanastaṅ kapimanvavēkṣya.

athōpaviṣṭān kulaśīlavṛddhān samādiśattaṅ prati mantrimukhyān৷৷5.48.60৷৷


saḥ daśānanaḥ that ten-headed one, rōṣasamvartitatāmradṛṣṭiḥ his red eyes rolling in rage, taṅ kapim him the monkey, anvavēkṣya observing unwinkingly, atha and then, upaviṣṭān seated, kulaśīlavṛddhān noble and aged members of his clan, mantrimukhyān important ministers, taṅ prati with regard to him, samādiśat ordered

That ten-headed rakshasa king, rolling his red eyes rapidly in rage and observing the monkey unwinkingly ordered the noble and aged ministers of his clan to interrogate Hanuman.
yathākramaṅ taissa kapirvipṛṣṭaḥ kāryārthamardhasya ca mūlamādau.

nivēdayāmāsa harīśvarasya dūtaḥ sakāśādahamāgatō.smi৷৷5.48.61৷৷


taiḥ by those, yathākramam in a proper order, kāryārtham purpose, ardhasya of the purpose, mūlam origin, vipṛṣṭaḥ questioned, saḥ kapiḥ that monkey, harīśvarasya sakāśāt a messsenger of the king of monkeys, sakāśāta from his place, āgataḥ asmi I came, nivēdayāmāsa he reported

At the very outset they questioned Hanuman manner in the usual about the place he came from and the purpose. Hanuman reported, 'I am Hanuman. I came as a messenger by the order of the king of monkeys'.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē aṣṭacatvāriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fortyeigth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
