[Hanuman wonders at the splendour and glory of Ravana]

tatassa karmaṇā tasya vismitō bhīmavikramaḥ.

hanumānrōṣatāmrākṣō rakṣōdhipamavaikṣata৷৷5.49.1৷৷


tataḥ then, bhīmavikramaḥ of fierce valour, saḥ hanumān that Hanuman, tasya his, tēna karmaṇā by that act, vismitaḥ astonished, rōṣatāmrākṣaḥ eyes red with anger, rakṣōdhipam demon king, avaikṣata beheld.

The highly courageous Hanuman, astonished at the action (of binding and dragging him to the court) by the demon king looked at him with eyes turned red in anger.
bhrājamānaṅ mahārhēṇa kāñcanēna virājatā.

muktājālāvṛtēnātha makuṭēna mahādyutim৷৷5.49.2৷৷


mahārhēṇa of innate splendour, kāñcanēna with a golden, virājatā shining, atha and, muktājālāvṛtēna covered with strings of pearls, makuṭēna with crown, bhrājamānam shining, mahādyutim glittering.

(Hanuman looked at Ravana) of innate splendour, who shone with a glittering crown of gold glowing, encircled with strings of pearls.
vajrasaṅyōgasaṅyuktairmahārhamaṇivigrahaiḥ.

haimairābharaṇaiścitrairmanasēva prakalpitaiḥ৷৷5.49.3৷৷


vajrasaṅyōgasaṅyuktai: studded with diamonds, mahārhamaṇivigrahaiḥ adorned with small motifs made of precious gems, manasā by imagination, prakalpitairiva as if created, citraiḥ wonderful, haimaiḥ golden, ābharaṇaiḥ with ornaments.

He was decked with wonderful golden ornaments studded with diamonds and had small motifs of precious gems fixed to them. They were as though designed by imagination. (An ornament made with the hand connot be so fine and delicate.)
mahārhakṣaumasaṅvītaṅ raktacandanarūṣitam.

svānuliptaṅ vicitrābhirvividhābhiśca bhaktibhiḥ৷৷5.49.4৷৷


mahārhakṣaumasaṅvītam dressed in exquisite silk, raktacandanarūṣitam smeared with red sandal paste, vicitrābhiḥ with wonderful, vividhābhiśca with many kinds, bhaktibhiḥ with ornamental designs drawn, svānuliptam smeared with unguents.

He was dressed in exquisite silk and smeared with red sandal paste and had many ornamental designs drawn on his body with fragrant unguents.
vicitrairdarśanīyaiśca raktākṣairbhīmadarśanaiḥ.

dīptatīkṣṇamahādaṅṣṭraiḥ pralambadaśanacchadaiḥ৷৷5.49.5৷৷

śirōbhirdaśabhirvīraṅ bhrājamānaṅ mahaujasam.

nānāvyālasamākīrṇaiśśikharairiva mandaram৷৷5.49.6৷৷


darśanīyaiḥ appeared, raktākṣaiḥ with blood-red eyes, bhīmadarśanaiḥ with terrible looks, dīptatīkṣṇamahādaṅṣṭraiḥ with shining sharp big teeth, pralambadaśanacchadaiḥ with drooping lips, daśabhiḥ with ten, śirōbhiḥ with heads, vicitraiḥ wonderful, nānāvyālasamākīrṇaiḥ with different kinds of beasts, śikharaiḥ with peaks, mandaram iva like Mandara mountain, bhrājamānaṅ splendid, mahaujasam lustrous, vīram hero.

He appeared terrible with blood-red eyes, shining sharp big teeth, drooping lips and ten heads, which looked like ten peaks of mountain Mandara inhabited by various beasts. He was heroic, powerful and splendid.
nīlāñjanacayaprakhyaṅ hārēṇōrasi rājatā.

pūrṇacandrābhavaktrēṇa sabalākamivāmbudam৷৷5.49.7৷৷


nīlāñjanacayaprakhyam like a black mountain of collyrium, urasi on the chest, rājatā by the illumining, hārēṇa with a pearl necklace, pūrṇacandrābhavaktrēṇa with a face like the full-moon, balākam with cranes around, ambudamiva like a cloud.

He was like a black mountain of collyrium, and with a face like the full-moon. With a pearl necklace illumining his chest he appeared like a cloud lit up by the full-moon with white cranes flying across. (The white pearl-necklace moving on his chest appeared like a row of cranes flying through the black cloud.)
bāhubhirbaddhakēyūraiścandanōttamarūṣitaiḥ.

bhrājamānāṅgadaiḥ pīnaiḥ pañcaśīrṣairivōragaiḥ৷৷5.49.8৷৷


baddhakēyūraiḥ wearing armlets, candanōttamarūṣitaiḥ smeared with choicest fragrants of sandal, bhrājamānāṅgadaiḥ with shining, pīnaiḥ stout ones, pañcaśīrṣaiḥ five headed, uragairiva like serpents, bāhubhiḥ with arms.

Adorned with armlets (keyura), smeared with choicest sandal paste, his shining, stout armlets appeared like many five-hooded serpents (fingers appearing like hoods).
mahatisphāṭikē citrē ratnasaṅyōgasaṅskṛtē.

uttamāstaraṇāstīrṇē sūpaviṣṭaṅ varāsanē৷৷5.49.9৷৷


ratnasaṅyōgasaṅskṛtē encrusted with precious stones, citrē a wonderful one, uttamāstaraṇāstīrṇē covered with beautiful carpets, sphāṭikē with crystals, mahati huge one, varāsanē a magnificent throne, sūpaviṣṭam well seated.

(He was) seated on a huge magnificent throne of crystal encrusted with precious stones and overspread with a wonderful carpet.
alaṅkṛtābhiratyarthaṅ pramadābhiḥ samantataḥ.

vālavyajanahastābhirārātsamupasēvitam৷৷5.49.10৷৷


atyartham exceedingly well, alaṅkṛtābhiḥ with decorated ones, vālavyajanahastābhiḥ holding whisks in their hands, pramadābhiḥ with beautiful girls, samantataḥ all over, ārāt the vicinity, samupasēvitam attended on him.

Young and beautiful girls decorated exceedingly well holding whisks all over the vicinity attended on him.
durdharēṇa prahastēna mahāpārśvēna rakṣasā.

mantribhirmantratattvajñairnikumbhēna ca mantriṇā৷৷5.49.11৷৷

sukhōpaviṣṭaṅ rakṣōbhiścaturbhirbaladarpitaiḥ.

kṛtsnaṅ parivṛtaṅ lōkaṅ caturbhiriva sāgaraiḥ৷৷5.49.12৷৷


durdharēṇa by Durdhara, prahastēna by Prahasta, rakṣasā by the ogres, mahāpārśvēna by Mahaparsva, mantriṇā by the ministers, nikumbhēna by Nikumbha, mantratattvajñaiḥ with learned ones, mantribhiḥ with ministers, baladarpitaiḥ with arrogant ones, caturbhiḥ with four, rakṣōbhiḥ with demons, sukhōpaviṣṭam comfortably seated, caturbhiḥ with four, sāgaraiḥ with oceans, parivṛtam surrounded, kṛtsnam entire, lōkam iva like the world.

He was attended by Durdhara, Prahasta, Mahaparsva and Nikumbha who were his learned ministers. Seated comfortably and attended by the four arrogant ministers, he was puffed with pride of their strength and appeared like the entire world surrounded by four oceans.
mantribhirmantratattvajñairanyaiśca śubhabuddhibhiḥ.

anvāsyamānaṅ rakṣōbhiḥ surairiva surēśvaram৷৷5.49.13৷৷


mantratattvajñaiḥ by learned ones, śubhabuddhibhiḥ by the intellectuals, mantribhiḥ with ministers, anyaiḥ with others, rakṣōbhiḥ with ogres, suraiḥ with suras, surēśvaram iva like Indra, anvāsyamānam attended him.

He was attended by ogres including ministers who were intellectuals and adept in counselling. He appeared like lord Indra attended by the gods.
apaśyadrākṣasapatiṅ hanumānatitējasam.

viṣṭhitaṅ mēruśikharē satōyamiva tōyadam৷৷5.49.14৷৷


hanumān Hanuman, atitējasam highly resplendent, mēruśikharē on the peak of mount Meru, viṣṭhitam seated, satōyam laden with water, tōyadam iva like cloud, rākṣasapatim demon king, apaśyat saw.

Hanuman saw the highly resplendent giant king (seated on the throne) who appeared like a cloud laden with water appearing on the peak of mount Meru.
sa taissampīḍyamānō.pi rakṣōbhirbhīmavikramaiḥ.

vismayaṅ paramaṅ gatvā rakṣōdhipamavaikṣata৷৷5.49.15৷৷


saḥ he, bhīmavikramaiḥ by those of fierce valour, rakṣōbhiḥ by ogres, sampīḍyamānō.pi even though pressed hard, paramam great, vismayam wonder, gatvā experiencing, rakṣōdhipam king of demons, avaikṣata saw.

Hanuman looked at the demon king with great amazement even while he was dealt harshly by the demons of fierce valour.
bhrājamānaṅ tatō dṛṣṭvā hanumānrākṣasēśvaram.

manasā cintayāmāsa tējasā tasya mōhitaḥ৷৷5.49.16৷৷


tataḥ then, hanumān Hanuman, bhrājamānam splendid, rākṣasēśvaram lord of ogres, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, tasya his, tējasā by splendour, mōhitaḥ dismayed, manasā in mind, cintayāmāsa started thinking.

Seeing the splendour of the lord of demons, Hanuman was dimayed and started thinking thus:
ahō rūpamahō dhairyamahō sattvamahō dyutiḥ.

ahō rākṣasarājasya sarvalakṣaṇayuktatā৷৷5.49.17৷৷


rākṣasarājasya Ravana's, rūpam form, ahō oh, wonderful, dhairyam courage, ahō amazing, sattvam power, ahō is great, dyutiḥ glow, ahō great, sarvalakṣaṇayuktatā endowment of all merits, ahō how great.

'Oh! what charm! what courage! what strength! what splendour! How great is this demon-king, an endowment of all merits.
yadyadharmō na balavān syādayaṅ rākṣasēśvaraḥ.

syādayaṅ suralōkasya saśakrasyāpi rakṣitā৷৷5.49.18৷৷


ayam this, adharmaḥ unrighteousness, balavān powerful, na syādyadi if it was not, ayam this, rākṣasēśvaraḥ lord of demons, saśakrasya including Indra, suralōkasyāpi even of the world of gods, rakṣitā lord, syāt would become.

'If only this lord of demons was not unrighteous, he could have become even the lord (protector) of gods including Indra.
asya krūrairnṛśaṅsaiśca karmabhirlōkakutsitaiḥ.

sarvē bibhyati khalvasmāllōkāssāmaradānavāḥ৷৷5.49.19৷৷

ayaṅ hyutsahatē kruddhaḥ kartumēkārṇavaṅ jagat.


krūraiḥ with cruel, nṛśaṅsaiśca wicked, lōkakutsitaiḥ contemptible to the people, asya karmabhiḥ by his deeds, sāmaradānavāḥ even the demons and gods, sarvē all, lōkāḥ people of the world, asmāt from his, bibhyati hi get sacred, ayam this person, kruddhaḥ becomes angry, jagat the world, ēkārṇavam one ocean, kartum to render, utsahatē hi indeed he will intend.

'This Ravana has done many cruel, fierce and contemptible deeds. That is why even
the demons, gods and all the people of this world get scared of him. He will render the entire world into a single ocean when he turns angry'.
iti cintāṅ bahuvidhāmakarōnmatimān hariḥ৷৷5.49.20৷৷

dṛṣṭvā rākṣasarājasya prabhāvamamitaujasaḥ.


amitaujasaḥ brilliant, rākṣasarājasya Ravana's, prabhāvam power, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, matimān intelligent, hariḥ Hanuman, iti in this way, bahuvidhām many ways, cintām thought, akarōt entertained.

Many such thoughts crossed Hanuman's intelligent mind on seeing Ravana's brilliance and power.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē ēkōnapañcāśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fortyninth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
