[Hanuman finds demons all over Lanka -- feels sad, unable to find Sita.]

ततः स मध्यंगतमंशुमन्तं ज्योत्स्नावितानं महदुद्वमन्तम्।

ददर्श धीमान् दिवि भानुमन्तं गोष्ठे वृषं मत्तमिव भ्रमन्तम्।।5.5.1।।


ततः then, धीमान् intelligent, सः that, मध्यं गतम् ascended to the centre (of the sky), अंशुमन्तम् luminous lord, महत् great, ज्योत्स्नावितानम् a canopy of moonlight, उद्वमन्तम् spreading, गोष्ठे in the stable, भ्रमन्तम् moving about, मत्तम् intoxicated, वृषमिव like a mighty bull, भानुमन्तम् like Sun, दिवि in the sky, ददर्श saw.

Then intelligent Hanuman observed the Moon in the central part of the sky spreading a canopy of his luminescence like the Sun, and looking like an intoxicated mighty (white) bull moving in a stable.
लोकस्य पापानि विनाशयन्तं महोदधिं चापि समेधयन्तम्।

भूतानि सर्वाणि विराजयन्तं ददर्श शीतांशुमथाभियान्तम्।।5.5.2।।


लोकस्य world's, पापानि agony, विनाशयन्तम् warding off, महोदधिम् great ocean, समेधयन्तं चापि augmenting the ocean even, सर्वाणि all, भूतानि creatures, विराजयन्तम् illuminating, अभियान्तम् moving forward (the earth, space and sky), शीतांशुम् Moon, ददर्श saw.

While moving forward, Hanuman saw the Moon spreading his light, thereby warding off the agony of all creatures, causing the swelling of the ocean and illuminating the earth as well as the sky.
या भाति लक्ष्मीर्भुवि मन्दरस्था तथा प्रदोषेषु च सागरस्था।

तथैव तोयेषु च पुष्करस्था रराज सा चारुनिशाकरस्था।।5.5.3।।


भुवि on earth, या that, लक्ष्मीः splendour (beauty), मन्दरस्था found on Mandara mountain,
भाति glows, तथा so also, प्रदोषेषु at dusk, सागरस्था found in the ocean, तथैव the same, तोयेषु in water, पुष्करस्था in lotuses in the lakes, सा such, चारुनिशाकरस्था is found in beautiful Moon, रराज shone.

'The same splendour on the Mandara mountain on earth, which glows at dusk lay on the ocean is there, on lotuses in the lakes and on the beautiful Moon also.
हंसो यथा राजतपञ्जरस्थः सिंहो यथा मन्दरकन्दरस्थः।

वीरो यथा गर्वितकुञ्जरस्थ चन्द्रोऽपि बभ्राज तथाम्बरस्थः।।5.5.4।।


राजतपञ्जरस्थः found in a silver cage, हंसः swan, यथा like that, मन्दरकन्दरस्थः in the caves of Mandara mountain, सिंहः lion, यथा like that, गर्वितकुञ्जरस्थः mounted on a proud elephant, वीरः hero, यथा like, अम्बरस्थः in the sky, चन्द्रः Moon, तथा in the same way, बभ्राज looked very lustrous.

'Like a swan in a cage of silver, like a lion in a cave of Mandara mountain, like a hero on a proud, intoxicated elephant, the Moon shone in the sky.
स्थितः ककुद्मानिव तीक्ष्णशृङ्गो महाचलः श्वेत इवोच्चशृङ्गः।

हस्तीव जाम्बूनदबद्धशृङ्गो रराज चन्द्रः परिपूर्णशृङ्गः।।5.5.5।।


तीक्ष्णशृङ्गः lofty peaks, स्थितः remaining, ककुद्मानिव horned bull, उच्चशृङ्गः tall peaks, श्वेतः white, महाचलः great mountain, जाम्बूनदबद्धशृङ्गः gold plated tusks, हस्तीव like elephant, परिपूर्णशृङ्गः complete with horn, चन्द्रः Moon, रराज shone.

The fullmoon with its hornlike spot shone like a bull with sharp horns, like the white Himalayan mountain with its lofty peaks, and like an elephant with gold plated tusks
विनष्टशीताम्बुतुषारपङ्को महाग्रहग्राहविनष्टपङ्कः।

प्रकाशलक्ष्म्याश्रयनिर्मलाङ्क: रराज चन्द्रो भगवान् शशाङ्कः।।5.5.6।।


विनष्टशीताम्बुतुषारपङ्कः with the dew formed with frost, महाग्रहग्राह विनष्टपङ्कः the frost
destroyed by the great planet (Sun), प्रकाशलक्ष्म्याश्रयनिर्मलाङ्कः the clean surface resting on graceful radiance, शशाङ्कः the rabbitlike figure on Moon, भगवान् god, चन्द्रः Moon, रराज shone.

With the Sun, the great planet (star), destroying the frost that forms the dew, the Moon with its stain shone with graceful radiance.
शिलातलं प्राप्य यथा मृगेन्द्रो महारणं प्राप्य यथा गजेन्द्रः।

राज्यं समासाद्य यथा नरेन्द्र स्तथाप्रकाशो विरराज चन्द्रः।।5.5.7।।


तथा प्रकाशः effulgent, चन्द्रः Moon, मृगेन्द्रः lion, the lord of animals, शिलातलम् on a rock, प्राप्य having reached, यथा as, गजेन्द्रः lord of elephants, महारणम् deep forest, प्राप्य after entering, यथा as, नरेन्द्र: lord of earth, राज्यं समासाद्य on attaining kingdom, विरराज shone bright .

The Moon shone bright like a lion mounted on a rock, like a lordly elephant in a deep forest, like a king on attaining the kingdom.
प्रकाशचन्द्रोदयनष्टदोषः प्रवृत्तरक्षः पिशिताशदोषः।

रामाभिरामेरितचित्तदोषः स्वर्गप्रकाशो भगवान् प्रदोषः।।5.5.8।।


प्रकाशचन्द्रोदयनष्टदोषः the darkness dispelled with the rise of the radiant Moon, प्रवृत्तरक्षःपिशिताशदोषः dark deeds dispelled, canibals started by their movement, रामाभिरामेरितचित्तदोषः the natural instinct for love among women is incited, भगवान् resplendent Moon, प्रदोषः dusk, स्वर्गप्रकाशः spread its bliss like heaven every where.

At the time of moonrise, the darkness of dusk is dispelled, the dark deeds of cannibals disappear, the natural instinct for love returns to women as the radiance of the Moon spreads everywhere like in heaven.
तन्त्रीस्वनाः कर्णसुखाः प्रवृत्ताः स्वपन्ति नार्यः पतिभिः सुवृत्ताः।

नक्तंचराश्चापि तथा प्रवृत्ता: विहर्तुमत्यद्भुतरौद्रवृत्ताः।।5.5.9।।


कर्णसुखाः pleasing to the ears, तन्त्रीस्वनाः sounds of string instruments, प्रवृत्ताः started, सुवृत्ताः chaste, नार्यः women, पतिभिः with their husbands, स्वपन्ति are sleeping, तथा likewise, अत्यद्भुतरौद्रवृत्ता: whose deeds were wonderful exhibiting their anger, नक्तंचराश्चापि night walkers also, विहर्तुम् to roam about, प्रवृत्ताः started.

Pleasing sounds of string instruments had begun to be heard. Chaste women were found asleep with their husbands.The nightrangers had begun their strange (evil and cruel) deeds exhibiting their anger.
मत्तप्रमत्तानि समाकुलानि रथाश्वभद्रासनसङ्कुलानि।

वीरश्रिया चापि समाकुलानि ददर्श धीमान् स कपिः कुलानि।।5.5.10।।


वीरः heroic, धीमान् intelligent, सः कपिः vanara Hanuman, मत्तप्रमत्तानि intoxicated and dull, समाकुलानि filled, रथाश्वभद्रासनसंकुलानि filled with chariots, drawn by horses with choicest seats, श्रिया चापि also prosperous, समाकुलानि filled (scattered), कुलानि houses, ददर्श observed.

Intelligent Hanuman, the great warrior, observed there in the prosperous mansions, demons proud of their wealth, highly intoxicated and dull, their houses full of horsedrawn chariots with comfortable seats.
परस्परं चाधिकमाक्षिपन्ति भुजांश्च पीनानधिकं क्षिपन्ति।

मत्तप्रलापानधिकं क्षिपन्ति मत्तानि चान्योन्यमधिक्षिपन्ति।।5.5.11।।


परस्परम् among themselves, अधिकम् very much, आक्षिपन्ति ridiculing each other, पीनान् stout, भुजान् च arms and, अधिकं क्षिपन्ति excessively throwing, अधिकम् highly, मत्तप्रलापान् intoxicated and blabbering, क्षिपन्ति indulge in vulgar conversation, मत्तानि by intoxication, अन्योन्यं one to the other, अधिक्षिपन्ति quarrelling.

The intoxicated demons were quarrelling, ridiculing one another bitterly and wildly throwing their stout arms on one another, indulging in incoherent talk, uttering vulgar words.
रक्षांसि वक्षांसि च विक्षिपन्ति गात्राणि कान्तासु च विक्षिपन्ति।

रूपाणि चित्राणि च विक्षिपन्ति दृढानि चापानि च विक्षिपन्ति।।5.5.12।।


वक्षांसि their chests, विक्षिपन्ति expanding, कान्तासु women, गात्राणि limbs, विक्षिपन्ति placing, चित्राणि wonderful, रूपाणि forms, विक्षिपन्ति assuming, दृढानि powerful , चापानि bows, विक्षपन्ति drew, रक्षांसि demons.

The demons were seen expanding their chests sportively and caressing their wives by placing their limbs on them. They were assuming wonderful forms, and drawing their bows up to their ears.
ददर्श कान्ताश्च समालभन्त्य स्तथा परास्तत्र पुनः स्वपन्त्यः।

सुरूपवक्त्राश्च तथा हसन्त्यः क्रुद्धाः पराश्चापि विनिःश्वसन्त्य।।5.5.13।।


कान्ताः च even women, समालभन्त्य collected there, तथा likewise, तत्र there, अपराः पुनः others again, स्वसन्त्य sleeping women, तथा likewise, सुरूपवक्त्राः women of beautiful countenance, हसन्त्यः laughing, पराः च at others, क्रुद्धाः angry, विनिःश्वसन्त्य: sighing, ददर्श saw.

He even saw women collected there, their limbs smeared with unguents on their bodies, like wise women with beautiful countenances laughing at others, some sleeping, and others hissing (sighing) like angry serpents.
महागजैश्चापि तथा नदद्भि: सुपूजितैश्चापि तथा सुसद्भिः।

रराज वीरैश्च विनिःश्वसद्भिः ह्रदो भुजङ्गैरिव निःश्वसद्भिः।।5.5.14।।


तथा likewise, नदद्भिः trumpeting, महागजैश्चापि huge elephants, तथा likewise, सुपूजितैः revered, सुसद्भिः चापि by the wellkept ones, रराज stood, विनिःश्वसद्भः those breathing heavily, वीरैच: heroes, निःश्वसद्भिः by hissing, भुजङ्गैः by serpents, ह्रदः इव like a lake, रराज stood.

There were huge elephants trumpeting, respected people, warriors sighing for the lack of enemies (to vanquish). It had a lake infested with hissing snakes.
बुद्धिप्रधानान् रुचिराभिधानान् संश्रद्धधानान् जगतः प्रधानान्।

नानाविधानान् रुचिराभिधानान् ददर्श तस्यां पुरि यातुधानान्।।5.5.15।।


बुद्धिप्रधानान् intellectuals, रुचिराभिधानान् who were sweet in expression, संश्रद्धधानान् who had faith in religion, जगतः in the world, प्रधानान् preeminent, नाना विधानान् heroes of different kinds, रुचिराभिधानान् of good practices, यातुधानान् demons, तस्याम् in that, पुरि city, ददर्श saw.

He saw there in the city of Lanka, demons, who were intellectuals, pleasing in words, with faith in religion, preeminent heroes of the world of different kinds, followers of good practices and with lovely names.
ननन्द दृष्ट्वा स च तान् सुरूपान्नानागुणानात्मगुणानुरूपान्।

विद्योतमानान्स तदानुरूपान् ददर्श कांश्चिच्च पुनर्विरूपान्।।5.5.16।।


सः that, सुरूपान् handsome, नानागुणान् with many virtues, आत्मगुणानुरूपान् whose appearance was in accordance with their virtues, विद्योतमानान् radiating, तान् them, दृष्ट्वा seeing, ननन्द rejoiced, तदा then, सः he, विरूपान् ugly, अनुरूपान् those having similar form, काञ्श्चित् च and some indeed, पुनः again, ददर्श saw.

He rejoiced to see the handsome demons radiant with forms commensurate with their virtues. He also saw some ugly figures, their traits in conformity to their forms.
ततो वरार्हाः सुविशुद्धभावा स्तेषां स्त्रियस्तत्र महानुभावाः।

प्रियेषु पानेषु च सक्तभावा ददर्श तारा इव सुप्रभावाः।।5.5.17।।


ततः then, तत्र there, वरार्हाः adorned with chiocest robes and ornaments, विशुद्धभावाः women whose minds were pure, महानुभावाः magnanimous, प्रियेषु attached to their lovers, पानेषु च and to drinking (wine), सक्तभावाः gentle, सुप्रभावाः bright, ताराः इव like stars, तेषां स्त्रियः their wives, ददर्श saw.

There he saw demonesses adorned with choicest ornaments, their minds attached faithfully to their husbands and bottles of wine. Some of the wives of the demons, however, looked gentle and bright like stars.
श्रिया ज्वलन्तीस्त्रपयोपगूढा निशीथकाले रमणोपगूढाः।

ददर्श काश्चित्प्रमदोपगूढा यथा विहङ्गाः कुसुमोपगूढाः।।5.5.18।।


श्रिया with grace, ज्वलन्ती shining brightly, त्रपया with shyness, उपगूढाः embraced, निशीथकाले at night, रमणोपगूढाः embraced by the beloved, प्रमदोपगूढाः filled with joy, कुसुमोपगूढाः adorned with flowers, विहङ्गाः यथा like birds, काश्चित् indeed, ददर्श saw.

There he saw cheerful demonesses shining brightly, abashed by the embrace of their beloveds during the night. He also saw those sporting with their beloveds freely and looking like birds embracing flowers.
अन्याः पुनर्हर्म्यतलोपविष्टा स्तत्र प्रियाङ्केषु सुखोपविष्टाः।

भर्तुः प्रिया धर्मपरा निविष्टा ददर्श धीमान् मदनाभिविष्टाः।।5.5.19।।


धीमान् Intelligent, हर्म्यतलोपविष्टाः seated on the terraces of the mansions, तत्र there, प्रियाङ्केषु on the laps of their beloved ones, सुखोपविष्टाः seated happily, भर्तुः husband's, प्रियाः beloveds, धर्मपराः attachment, मदनाभिविष्टाः overwhelmed with sexual pleasure, निविष्टाः engaged in love, अन्याः others, ददर्श he saw.

Intelligent Hanuman saw demonesses seated happily on the laps of their beloved ones on the terraces of the mansions, exhibiting their attachment to one another, overwhelmed with sexual pleasure.
अप्रावृताः काञ्चनराजिवर्णाः काश्चित्परार्थ्यास्तपनीयवर्णाः।

पुनश्च काश्चिच्छशलक्ष्मवर्णाः कान्तप्रहीणा रुचिराङ्गवर्णाः।।5.5.20।।


अप्रावृताः without any veil, काञ्चनराजिवर्णाः of golden hue,परार्थ्याः altruistic demonesses, तपनीयवर्णाः shining with polished gold, काश्चित् a few, पुनश्च again, शशलक्ष्मवर्णाः pale white
like the colour of Moon, काश्चित् a few, रुचिराङ्गवर्णाः of attractive complexion, कान्तप्रहीणाः separated from their husbands.

Ogresses without veil, some altruistic, some separated from their husbands looked pale like the Moon, though possessed of polished gold complexion.
ततः प्रियान् प्राप्य मनोभिरामाः सुप्रीतियुक्ताः प्रसमीक्ष्यरामाः।

गृहेषु हृष्टाः परमाभिरामाः हरिप्रवीरः स ददर्श रामाः।।5.5.21।।


हरिप्रवीरः eminent vanara, ततः then, मनोभिरामाः entieing, प्रियान् loved ones, प्राप्य having obtained, सुप्रीतियुक्ताः enjoying very much, प्रसमीक्ष्यरामाः seeing those demonesses, परमाभिरामाः ecstatic, गृहेषु in the houses, हृष्टाः happily, रामाः demonesses, सः he, ददर्श saw.

That heroic monkey saw ogresses delighted in the happy company of their loved ones who have joined them, ecstatic wives in the houses.
चन्द्रप्रकाशाश्च हि वक्त्रमालाः वक्राक्षिपक्ष्माश्च सुनेत्रमालाः।

विभूषणानां च ददर्श मालाः शतह्रदानामिव चारुमालाः।।5.5.22।।


चन्द्रप्रकाशाः radiating like the Moon, वक्त्रमालाश्च rows of faces, वक्राक्षिपक्ष्माश्च many with sidelong glances and graceful lashes, सुनेत्रमालाः rows of beautiful eyes, शतह्रदानाम् of lightning, चारुमालाः many lovely rows, विभूषणानाम् of ornaments, मालाः च and streaks.

He saw rows of faces of shedemons shining like moonlight with sidelong glances and graceful eyelashes wearing ornaments resembling charmimg flashes of lightning.
न त्वेव सीतां परमाभिजातां पथि स्थिते राजकुले प्रजाताम्।

लतां प्रपुल्लामिव साधु जातां ददर्श तन्वीं मनसाभिजाताम्।।5.5.23।।


परमाभिजाताम् born in a noble family, पथि on the right path, स्थिते abiding by, राजकुले in a royal family, प्रजाताम् born, साधु excellent,जाताम् born,प्रपुल्लाम् blossoming, लताम् इव like a
creeper, तन्वीम् a delicate beautiful lady, मनसा through his mind, अभिजाताम् of noble descent, सीतां तु and Sita, न ददर्श not seen.

Hanuman could not find Sita anywhere, an excellent lady born in a noble royal family, adopting the right path, a lady delicate like a blossoming creeper of good breed, or so he imagined.
सनातने वर्त्मनि सन्निविष्टां रामेक्षणां तां मदनाभिविष्टाम्।

भर्तुर्मनः श्रीमदनुप्रविष्टां स्त्रीभ्यो वराभ्यश्च सदा विशिष्टाम्।।5.5.24।।


सनातने the eternal, वर्त्मनि on the path, सन्निविष्टाम् abiding, रामेक्षणाम् a lady of beautiful eyes, मदनाभिविष्टाम् overwhelmed by love, श्रीमत् prosperous, भर्तुः husband's, मनः in mind, अनुप्रविष्टाम् ever established, वराभ्यः compared to the choicest women, स्त्रीभ्यश्च compared to wives, सदा ever, विशिष्टाम् a distinguished demoness, ताम् her, न ददर्श not seen.

'Sita must have had a pair of beautiful eyes. She must have been a passionate lady with mind fixed on her glorious husband. Ever established in dharma, she is perhaps a distinguished lady compared to her counterparts (in Lanka).
उष्णार्दितां सानुसृतास्रकण्ठीम् पुरा वरार्होत्तमनिष्ककण्ठीम्।

सुजातपक्ष्मामभिरक्तकण्ठीं वनेऽप्रवृत्तामिव नीलकण्ठीम्।।5.5.25।।


उष्णार्दिताम् shedding hot tears, सानुसृतास्रकण्ठीम् with her throat choked with incessant tears, पुरा earlier, वरार्होत्तमनिष्ककण्ठीम् wearing costly ornaments on the neck, सुजातपक्ष्माम् who has beautiful eyelashes, अभिरक्तकण्ठीम् a woman of sweet, loving voice, वने in the forest, अप्रवृत्ताम् wandering, नीलकण्ठीमिव like a peahen.

She whose neck was adorned with costly ornaments earlier must be shedding hot tears now, her throat choked with grief. With her beautiful eyelashes and a sweet loving voice, she would be now like a peahen wandering in the woods.
अव्यक्तरेखामिव चन्द्ररेखां पांसुप्रदिग्धामिव हेमरेखाम्।

क्षतप्ररूढामिव बाणरेखां वायुप्रभिन्नामिव मेघरेखाम्।।5.5.26।।


अव्यक्तरेखाम् an invisible ray, चन्द्ररेखामिव like the rays of the Moon, पांसुप्रदिग्धाम् covered with dust, हेमरेखामिव like a streak of gold, क्षतप्ररूढाम् scar of superficially healed wound, बाणरेखामिव path of an arrow, वायुप्रभिन्नाम् swept off by the wind, मेघरेखामिव like a flake of cloud.

She would be like a barely visible ray of the Moon, like a streak of gold covered with dust, like an unhealed scar of a wound caused by an arrow only superficially covered and like a flake of cloud swept off by the wind.
सीतामपश्यन् मनुजेश्वरस्य रामस्य पत्नीं वदतां वरस्य।

बभूव दुःखाभिहतश्चिरस्य प्लवङ्गमो मन्द इवाचिरस्य।।5.5.27।।


प्लवङ्गमः monkey, वदताम् among those who are good at speech, वरस्य of the best ones, मनुजेश्वरस्य of the lord of men, रामस्य Rama's, पत्नीम् wife, सीताम् Sta, चिरस्य for a short while, अपश्यन् not able to find, दुःखाभिहितः hit by grief, अचिरस्य for a while, मन्दः इव as though dull, बभूव became.

Hanuman stood griefstricken, having (unsuccessfully) searched for a long time for the wife of Rama, the lord of men. The highly eloquent was now despondent. For a while he looked dull and dejected.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे पञ्चमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the fifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
