[Ravana orders the ogres to put Hanuman's tail on fire and take him round Lanka with his burning tail]

tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā daśagrīvō mahātmanaḥ.

dēśakālahitaṅ vākyaṅ bhrāturuttaramabravīt৷৷5.53.1৷৷


daśagrīvaḥ ten-necked one, mahātmanaḥ great-soul, bhrātuḥ brother's, tasya his, dēśakālahitam in keeping with the laws of the land, tat vacanam that word, śrutvā after hearing, uttaram in return, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke.

The ten-headed Ravana heard his brother, the great-soul Vibhishana's timely advice which was in keeping with the laws of the land and replied.
samyaguktaṅ hi bhavatā dūtavadhyā vigarhitā.

avaśyaṅ tu vadhādanyaḥ kriyatāmasya nigrahaḥ৷৷5.53.2৷৷


bhavatā by you, samyak very well, uktaṅ hi indeed spoken, dūtavadhyā killing of emissary, vigarhitā is censured, vadhāt other than killing, anyaḥ other, nigrahaḥ punishment, asya his, avaśyam surely, kriyatām may be done.

"Indeed, you have spoken very well.Killing of emissary is censured (in sastras). Surely we will impose suitable punishment other than killing.
kapīnāṅ kila lāṅgūlamiṣṭaṅ bhavati bhūṣaṇam.

tadasya dīpyatāṅ śīghraṅ tēna dagdhēna gacchatu৷৷5.53.3৷৷


kapīnām for the monkeys, lāṅgūlam tail, iṣṭam is dear, bhūṣaṇam is an ornament, bhavati kila indeed is, asya his, tat that, śīghram at once, dīpyatām may be set fire to, dagdhēna with the burning, tēna by that, gacchatu let go.

"The tail is dear to the monkeys and it is an ornament for them. Set fire to it at once and let him go with his burning tail.
tataḥ paśyantvimaṅ dīnamaṅgavairūpyakarśitam.

samitrajñātayassarvē bāndhavāḥ sasuhṛjjanāḥ৷৷5.53.4৷৷

ājñāpayadrākṣasēndraḥ puraṅ sarvaṅ sacatvaram.

lāṅgūlēna pradīptēna rakṣōbhiḥ pariṇīyatām৷৷5.53.5৷৷


tataḥ then, paśyantvimaṅ let them see, samitrajñātaya: including his friends and relatives, bāndhavāḥ kith and kin, sasuhṛjjanāḥ persons close to him, dīnamaṅgavairūpyakarśitam disfigured and deformed by such handicap, pradīptēna by the flamimg, lāṅgūlēna by the tail, rakṣōbhiḥ by the demons, sacatvaram the road junctions, sarvam all over, puram the city, pariṇīyatām take him round, rākṣasēndraḥ demon king, ājñāpayat ordered.

"Then all his friends, relatives and his kinsmen will see his disfigured and handicapped form. The demon king having ordered thus, the monkey was taken by the ogres round the junctions of the roads all over the city with his tail on fire.
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā rākṣasāḥ kōpakarśitāḥ.

vēṣṭayanti sma lāṅgūlaṅ jīrṇaiḥ kārpāsakaiḥ paṭaiḥ৷৷5.53.6৷৷


tasya his, tat that, vacanam word, śrutvā having heard, kōpakarśitāḥ brutally angry, rākṣasāḥ demons, jīrṇaiḥ tatters, kārpāsakaiḥ of cotton, paṭaiḥ with tatters, lāṅgūlam his tail, vēṣṭayanti sma wrapped.

"Obeying the orders of the king, the brutally angry demons wrapped his tail with tatters of cotton.
saṅvēṣṭyamānē lāṅgūlē vyavardhata mahākapiḥ.

śuṣkamindhanamāsādya vanēṣviva hutāśanaḥ৷৷5.53.7৷৷


lāṅgūlē while that tail, saṅvēṣṭyamānē was being swathed, mahākapiḥ great vanara, vanēṣu in the woods, śuṣkam dried, indhanam fire-wood,āsādya caught, hutāśanaḥ iva like the fire, vyavardhata grew in size.

While the tail was being swathed, the great vanara grew in size like wild fire fed with dry fire-wood.
tailēna pariṣicyātha tē.gniṅ tatrābhyapātayan.

lāṅgūlēna pradīptēna rākṣasāṅstānapātayat৷৷5.53.8৷৷

rōṣāmarṣaparītātmā bālasūryasamānanaḥ.


atha and then, tē those, tailēna with oil, pariṣicya having soaked, tatra there, agnim in fire, abhyapātayan threw fire at his tail, bālasūryasamānanaḥ his face looking like the rising Sun, rōṣāmarṣaparītātmā overtaken with anger and indignation, pradīptēna burning, lāṅgūlēna by the tail, tān rākṣasān those demons, apātayat struck.

The demons soaked the tail and set fire to it. His face burning in anger shone like the rising Sun and his mind seized with indignation, he struck them with the burning tail.
lāṅgūlaṅ sampradīptaṅ tu draṣṭuṅ tasya hanūmataḥ৷৷5.53.9৷৷

sahastrībālavṛddhāśca jagmuḥ prītā niśācarāḥ.


tasya hanūmataḥ of that Hanuman, sampradīptam burning, lāṅgūlam tail, draṣṭum to see, niśācarāḥ the demons, prītāḥ joyfully, sahastrībālavṛddhāśca including children, women and the old, jagmuḥ went out to see.

All the demons including the she-demons and their children and the elders went out joyfully to see the burning tail of Hanuman.
sa bhūyaḥ saṅgataiḥ krūrairrākṣasairharisattamaḥ৷৷5.53.10৷৷

nibaddhaḥ kṛtavānvīrastatkālasadṛśīṅ matim.


vīraḥ hero, saḥ harisattamaḥ that great monkey, saṅgataiḥ (ogres) collected around him, krūraiḥ cruel, rākṣasaiḥ with ogres, bhūyaḥ again, nibaddhaḥ bound, tatkālasadṛśīm appropriate to the moment, matim thought, kṛtavān thought over thus.

When the cruel demons collected together and bound him once again the heroic Hanuman thought what was appropriate to the moment.
kāmaṅ khalu na mē śaktā nibaddhasyāpi rākṣasāḥ৷৷5.53.11৷৷

chittvā pāśān samutpatya hanyāmahamimānpunaḥ.


rakṣasāḥ ogres, nibaddhasyāpi even if they bind, mē me, na śaktāḥ are not able, kāmaṅ khalu indeed, aham I, punaḥ again, pāśān bonds, chittvā after severing, samutpatya leap, imān these, hanyām I will kill.

'Even though these ogres are not capable, they have bound me. Indeed I will leap (into the air) once again and sever my bonds and kill them.
yadi bharturhitārthāya carantaṅ bhartṛśāsanāt৷৷5.53.12৷৷

badhnantyētē durātmanō na tu mē niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā.


bhartuḥ of my lord's, hitārthāya for the welfare, carantam while moving, ētē durātmanaḥ these evil minded ones, bhartṛśāsanāt by the order of their lord, badhnanti yadi if they are binding, mē to me, niṣkṛtiḥ escape, na kṛtā not be able to do

'These evil-minded demons bind me, ordered by their lord. When I am moving here for the welfare of my master, I will not let them escape৷৷
sarvēṣāmēva paryāptō rākṣasānāmahaṅ yudhi৷৷5.53.13৷৷

kiṅtu rāmasya prītyarthaṅ viṣahiṣyē.hamīdṛśam.

laṅkā cārayitavyā vai punarēva bhavēditi৷৷5.53.14৷৷


yudhi in battle, aham I, sarvēṣāmēva for all of them, rākṣasānām for the ogres, paryāptaḥ enough, kintu but, rāmasya Rama's, prītyartham for his pleasure, aham I, īdṛśam such, laṅkā Lanka, punarēva once again, cārayitavyā going about, bhavēt will be, iti in this way, viṣahiṣyē I will tolerate.

'I am strong enough to destroy all the demons in a battle. I am enduring this humiliation in order to make Rama happy. In this way I will get a chance to see Lanka once again.
rātrau na hi sudṛṣṭā mē durgakarmavidhānataḥ.

avaśyamēva draṣṭavyā mayā laṅkā niśākṣayē৷৷5.53.15৷৷


laṅkā Lanka, durgakarmavidhānataḥ acquiring knowledge of the fortification of the city, rātrau in the night, sudṛṣṭā well observed, na hi not indeed, niśākṣayē at the end of the night, mayā by me, avaśyamēva surely, draṣṭavyā should be seen.

'Indeed I saw Lanka at night for which I could not acquire proper knowledge about the fortification of the city. Surely it should be seen by me now after the night has passed.
kāmaṅ baddhasya mē bhūyaḥ pucchasyōddīpanēna ca.

pīḍāṅ kurvantu rakṣāṅsi na mē.sti manasaśśramaḥ৷৷5.53.16৷৷


bhūyaḥ again, baddhasya bound, mē for me, pucchasya tail, uddīpanēna ca by burning the same, rakṣāṅsi demons, kāmam surely, pīḍām torment, kurvantu they may as they wish, mē me, manasaḥ mind, śramaḥ exhausted, nāsti not experienced.

'Let the demons torture me freely by setting fire to my tail. Let them bind me. I am not exhausted.
tatastē saṅvṛtākāraṅ sattvavantaṅ mahākapim.

parigṛhya yayurhṛṣṭā rākṣasāḥ kapikuñjaram৷৷5.53.17৷৷


tataḥ then, tē rākṣasāḥ those ogres, hṛṣṭāḥ joyfully, saṅvṛtākāram contracted, sattvavantam very powerful, kapikuñjaram elephant among monkeys, mahākapim great vanara, parigṛhya after capturing, yayuḥ set forth.

Then the ogres set forth joyfully capturing the very powerful elephant among the monkeys, the great vanara who had contracted his body.
śaṅkhabhērīninādaistaṅ ghōṣayantaḥ svakarmabhiḥ.

rākṣasāḥ krūrakarmāṇaścārayanti sma tāṅ purīm৷৷5.53.18৷৷


krūrakarmaṇaḥ cruel in action, rākṣasāḥ ogres, tam him, śaṅkhabhērīninādaiśca by sounding conches and beating drums, svakarmabhiḥ with their actions, ghōṣayantaḥ while announcing, tāṅ purīm that city, cārayanti sma paraded him.

The cruel demons started blowing conches and beating drums. They paraded him in the city announcing their deeds.
anvīyamānō rakṣōbhiryayau sukhamarindamaḥ.

hanumāṅścārayāmāsa rākṣasānāṅ mahāpurīm৷৷5.53.19৷৷


arindamaḥ subduer of enemies, hanumān Hanuman, rakṣōbhiḥ by the ogres, anvīyamānaḥ being followed, sukham happily, yayau went, rākṣasānām of the demons, mahāpurīm great city, cārayāmāsa ranged forth.

Hanuman, the subduer of enemies ranged forth happily while he was followed by the demons in the great city.
athāpaśyadvimānāni vicitrāṇi mahākapiḥ.

saṅvṛtān bhūmibhāgāṅśca suvibhaktāṅśca catvarān৷৷5.53.20৷৷


atha and then, mahākapiḥ great vanara, vicitrāṇi wonderful, vimānāni towering mansions, saṅvṛtān secure all over, bhūmibhāgāṅśca on the streets, suvibhaktān well laid out, catvarān squares, apaśyat saw.

The great vanara saw wonderful, towering mansions, secure, mammoth buildings all over and well-laid out squares on the streets.
vīthīśca gṛhasambādhāḥ kapiśśṛṅgāṭakāni ca.

tathā rathyōparathyāśca tathaiva gṛhakāntarān৷৷5.53.21৷৷

gṛhāṅśca mēghasaṅkāśān dadarśa pavanātmajaḥ.


pavanātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, kapiḥ monkey, gṛhasambādhāḥ with houses, vīthīḥ streets, śṛṅgāṭakāni ca beautiful tall mansions, tathā similarly, rathyōparathyāśca highways and byways, tathaiva ca and similarly, gṛhakāntarān interior paths, mēghasaṅkāśān appearing like clouds, gṛhāṅśca houses, dadarśa saw.

The son of the Wind-god saw the streets with beautiful, tall mansions and houses appearing like clouds, highways and byways and secret routes.
catvarēṣu catuṣkēṣu rājamārgē tathaiva ca৷৷5.53.22৷৷

ghōṣayanti kapiṅ sarvē cārīka iti rākṣasāḥ.


sarvē all, rākṣasāḥ demons, catvarēṣu at cross roads, catuṣkēṣu at altars with four pillars, tathaiva ca like that, rājamārgē royal road, kapim monkey, cārīkaḥ iti that he is a spy, ghōṣayanti announcing.

All the demons went forth through cross roads, altars built on four pillars and royal roads announcing that he (Hanuman) was a spy.
strībālavṛddhāḥ nirjagmustatra tatra kutūhalāt৷৷5.53.23৷৷

taṅ pradīpitalāṅgūlaṅ hanumantaṅ didṛkṣavaḥ.


pradīpitalāṅgūlam with blazing tail, taṅ hanumantam at Hanuman, didṛkṣavaḥ desirous to have a glance, strībālavṛddhāḥ women, children and the aged, tatra tatra here and there, kutūhalāt out of eagerness, nirjagmuḥ came out.

With eagerness to have a glance at Hanuman's blazing tail, women, children and the aged here and there came out of eagerness to see him.
dīpyamānē tatastatra lāṅgūlāgrē hanūmataḥ৷৷5.53.24৷৷

rākṣasyastā virūpākṣya śśaṅsurdēvyāstadapriyam.


tataḥ then, tatra there, hanūmataḥ Hanuman's, lāṅgūlāgrē when the tip of the tail, dīpyamānē was set on fire, virūpākṣyaḥ ugly-eyed women, tāḥ rākṣasyaḥ the she-demon, dēvyāḥ to divine Sita, apriyam unpleasant, tat that, śaṅsuḥ informed.

When the tip of Hanuman's tail was set on fire, the ugly-eyed she-demon. Carried the unpleasant news to divine Sita.
yastvayā kṛtasaṅvāda ssītē tāmramukhaḥ kapiḥ৷৷5.53.25৷৷

lāṅgūlēna pradīptēna sa ēṣa pariṇīyatē.


sītē O Sita, yaḥ he who, tāmramukhaḥ red face, kapiḥ monkey, tvayā by you, kṛtasaṅvādaḥ who conversed with you, sa ēṣaḥ that person, pradīptēna set on fire, lāṅgūlēna with tail, pariṇīyatē taken round.

"O Sita! the red-faced monkey who conversed with you is being paraded in the streets with his tail set on fire".
śrutvā tadvacanaṅ krūramātmāpaharaṇōpamam৷৷5.53.26৷৷

vaidēhī śōkasantaptā hutāśanamupāgamat.


vaidēhī Vaidehi!, ātmāpaharaṇōpamam equally distressing as her abduction, krūram cruel, tat that,
vacanam word, śrutvā after hearing, śōkasantaptā burning with grief, hutāśanam fire-god, upāgamat invoked.

Distressed on hearing the news which was as cruel as her own abduction Sita started burning with grief and invoked the fire-god.
maṅgalābhimukhī tasya sā tadā.sīnmahākapēḥ৷৷5.53.27৷৷

upatasthē viśālākṣī prayatā havyavāhanam.


tadā then, sā that Sita, mahākapēḥ of the great monkey, tasya maṅgalābhimukhī wishing auspicious events, āsīt became, viśālākṣī large-eyed lady, prayatā with her mind, havyavāhanam Fire-god, upatasthē invoked.

Wishing the great monkey well, the large-eyed Sita invoked the Fire-god in her heart.
yadyasti patiśuśrūṣā yadyasti caritaṅ tapaḥ.

yadi cāstyēkapatnītvaṅ śītō bhava hanūmataḥ৷৷5.53.28৷৷


patiśuśrūṣā service to my husband, asti yadi if rendered, tapaḥ austerities, caritam practised, asti yadi if I am, ēkapatnītvam loyal to my husband, asti ca and so yadi if it be, tvam you, hanūmataḥ for Hanuman, śītaḥ cool, bhava be.

"O Fire-god! if I have served my husband, if I have practised austerities, and if I am loyal to my husband, be cool to Hanuman.
yadi kiñcidanukrōśastasya mayyasti dhīmataḥ৷৷5.53.29৷৷

yadi vā bhāgyaśēṣō mē śītō bhava hanūmataḥ.


dhīmataḥ of the wise, tasya Rama's, mayi towards me, kiñcit even a little, anukrōśaḥ compassion, asti yadi if he has, mē my, bhāgyaśēṣaḥ any good luck, yadi vā if there is, hanūmataḥ to Hanuman, śītaḥ cool, bhava be.

"If wise Rama has some compassion for me, if there is any residue of good luck for me, to Hanuman be cool O Fire-god.
yadi māṅ vṛttasampannāṅ tatsamāgamalālasām৷৷5.53.30৷৷

sa vijānāti dharmātmā śītō bhava hanūmataḥ.


dharmātmā righteous, saḥ he, mām to me, vṛttasampannām pure in mind, tatsamāgamalālasām that I am longing to unite with him, vijānāti yadi if he believes, hanūmataḥ to Hanuman, śītaḥ cool, bhava be.

"O Fire-god! if Rama is righteous, if I am pure in mind, and if I am longing to unite with him, be cool to Hanuman.
yadi māṅ tārayēdāryassugrīvaḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ৷৷5.53.31৷৷

asmāddhuḥkhāmbusaṅrōdhācchītō bhava hanūmataḥ.


āryaḥ noble one, satyasaṅgaraḥ who is true to his promise in warfare, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, asmāt from, duḥkhāmbusaṅrōdhāt from this ocean of agony, mām me, tārayēdyadi is going to rescue, hanūmataḥ for Hanuman, śītaḥ cool, bhava be.

"If Sugriva is true to his promise to fight (for me), if he should be able to rescue me from this ocean of agony let Hanuman be cool (not consumed by fire.)"
tatastīkṣṇārciravyagraḥ pradakṣiṇaśikhō.nalaḥ৷৷5.53.32৷৷

jajvāla mṛgaśābākṣyā śśaṅsanniva śivaṅ kapēḥ.


tataḥ then, analaḥ Fire-god, mṛgaśābākṣyāḥ to the fawn-eyed lady, kapēḥ to the monkey, śivam auspicious, śaṅsanniva as if assuring, tīkṣṇārciḥ with intense flame, pradakṣiṇaśikhaḥ with tips of flames moving, avyagraḥ steadily, jajvāla glowed.

Then the tips of the intense flame appeared steadily moving to the fawn-eyed Sita indicating the fire-god's auspiciousness and safety to Hanuman.
hanumajjanakaścāpi pucchānalayutō.nilaḥ৷৷5.53.33৷৷

vavau svāsthyakarō dēvyāḥ prālēyānilaśītalaḥ.


hanumajjanakaḥ the father of Hanuman, Wind-god anilaḥ the Fire-god, pucchānalayutaḥ burning tail of Hanuman, dēvyāḥ to the divine lady, svāsthyakaraḥ to calm her down, prālēyānilaśītalaḥ cool like the wind blowing from the snow, vavau blew.

"The Wind-god accompanying Hanuman's fire-lit tail also blew cool like the wind from snow, to calm the mind of the divine lady.
dahyamānē ca lāṅgūlē cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ৷৷5.53.34৷৷

pradīptō.gnirayaṅ kasmānna māṅ dahati sarvataḥ.


lāṅgūlē when the tail, dahyamānē when it was ablaze, vānaraḥ vanara, cintayāmāsa thought, sarvataḥ on every side, pradīptaḥ kindled ayam this agniḥ fire, mām me, kasmāt why not me, na dahati is not burning.

When the tail was burning, the vanara wondered how the fire ablaze on every side was not burning him:
dṛśyatē ca mahājvālaḥ karōti na ca mē rujam৷৷5.53.35৷৷

śiśirasyēva saṅghātō lāṅgūlāgrē pratiṣṭhitaḥ.


mahājvālaḥ huge flame, dṛśyatē seeing, mē my, rujam na karōti ca is not hurting me, lāṅgūlāgrē at the end of my tail, śiśirasya like the coolness, saṅghātaḥ like mass of ice, pratiṣṭhitaḥ iva is placed.

'This huge flame is not hurting me. It is as though a mass of ice is placed at the end of my tail. (The fire did not torture nor extend beyond the tip of my tail.)
athavā tadidaṅ vyaktaṅ yaddṛṣṭaṅ plavatā mayā৷৷5.53.36৷৷

rāmaprabhāvādāścaryaṅ parvata ssaritāṅ patau.


athavā or else, yat such an incident, plavatā while I leaped, mayā by me, rāmaprabhāvāt by the power of Rama, parvata: a mountain, saritāṅ patau foating in the ocean, āścaryam wonderful, dṛṣṭam saw, tata idam that this, vyaktam now It is clear.

'It must be due to the power of Rama, by which I found a wonderful mountain emerging from the sea to give me protection while I was crossing the ocean. Now evidently this is due to Rama's power (that my tail is not burning me).
yadi tāvatsamudrasya mainākasya ca dhīmataḥ৷৷5.53.37৷৷

rāmārthaṅ sambhramastādṛkkimagnirna kariṣyati.


samudrasya for the ocean, dhīmataḥ of the wise, mainākasya for Mainaka, rāmārtham for the cause of Rama, tādṛk such, sambhramaḥ yadi if there was anxiety, agniḥ fire, kim what, na kariṣyati not do?

'If the anxiety of the ocean and the wise Mainaka mountain is to serve Rama what is it that the fire cannot do?
sītāyāścānṛśaṅsyēna tējasā rāghavasya ca৷৷5.53.38৷৷

pituśca mama sakhyēna na māṅ dahati pāvakaḥ.


sītāyāḥ Sita's, anṛśaṅsyēna by the steadfast chaste character, rāghavasya Rama's, tējasā by lustre, mama pituḥ my father's, sakhyēna with friend, pāvakaḥ fire, mām me, na dahati not burning.

'Because of Sita's steadfast loyalty, Rama's power and my father's friendship with the Fire-god, the fire is not burning me.'
bhūyassa cintayāmāsa muhūrtaṅ kapikuñjaraḥ৷৷5.53.39৷৷

utpapātātha vēgēna nanāda ca mahākapiḥ.


kapikuñjaraḥ an elephant-monkey, saḥ mahākapiḥ the great monkey, bhūyaḥ once more, cintayāmāsa thought, atha then, vēgēna with speed, utpapāta sprang up, nanāda ca roarshouted aloud.

Once more a thought came to the great Hanuman,the elephant among monkeys. He sprang up and shouted loud.
puradvāraṅ tataśśrīmān śailaśṛṅgamivōnnatam৷৷5.53.40৷৷

vibhaktarakṣassambādhamāsasādānilātmajaḥ.


tataḥ then, śrīmān the illustrious, anilātmajaḥ the son of the Wind-god (Hanuman), śailaśṛṅgamiva like the peak of a mountain, unnatam lofty, vibhaktarakṣassambādham turned away the demons, puradvāram entrance of the city, āsasāda reached.

Then the illustrious Hanuman reached the entrance of the lofty city, which was like the peak of a mountain and turned away the demons.
sa bhūtvā śailasaṅkāśaḥ kṣaṇēna punarātmavān৷৷5.53.41৷৷

hrasvatāṅ paramāṅ prāptō bandhanānyavaśātayat.


ātmavān assumed original form, saḥ that, śailasaṅkāśaḥ appearing like a mountain, bhūtvā becoming, kṣaṇēna in a moment, hrasvatām very small, prāptaḥ became, bandhanāni all bondage, avaśātayat casting off.

From his mountain-like form he assumed his original small figure within a moment casting off the bonds.
vimuktaścābhavachracīmān punaḥ parvatasannibhaḥ৷৷5.53.42৷৷

vīkṣamāṇaśca dadṛśē parighaṅ tōraṇāśritam.


śrīmān illustrious, vimuktaśca relieved of bondage, punaḥ again, parvatasannibhaḥ grew like a
mountain, abhavat became, vīkṣamāṇaśca looking around, tōraṇāśritam near the archway, parigham iron club, dadṛśē saw.

Illustrious Hanuman was relieved of the bond and once again grew to a mountain size. Looking around he saw an iron club near the archway.
sa taṅ gṛhya mahābāhuḥ kālāyasapariṣkṛtam৷৷5.53.43৷৷

rakṣiṇastān punassarvānsūdayāmāsa mārutiḥ.


mahābāhuḥ strong-armed, saḥ mārutiḥ that Maruti, kālayāsapariṣkṛtam made of black Iron, tam the club, punaḥ again, gṛhya seizing, sarvān all, tān rakṣiṇaḥ all the guards, sūdayāmāsa killed.

Seizing the black Iron club again, the strong-armed Hanuman killed all the demon guards.
sa tānnihattvā raṇacaṇḍavikrama ssamīkṣamāṇaḥ punarēva laṅkām.

raṇacaṇḍavikramaḥ of fearsome valour in war, saḥ he, tān those, nihattvā having killed, punarēva once again, laṅkām at Lanka, samīkṣamāṇaḥ while gazing, pradīptalāṅgūlakṛtārcimālī garlanded by the flames of his tail, arcimālī garlanded by rays, āditya iva just like Sun, prakāśata shining.

Hanuman, who was of fearsome valour in war with the demons, having killed them, gazed at Lanka once again. Garlanded by the flames of his tail around, he shone like the Sun covered with garlands of rays.

Thus ends the fiftythird sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
