[Hanuman destroys the Ashoka garden -- sets fire to Lanka -- kills demons]

vīkṣamāṇastatō laṅkāṅ kapiḥ kṛtamanōrathaḥ৷৷5.54.1৷৷

vardhamānasamutsāhaḥ kāryaśēṣamacintayat.


tataḥ then, kṛtamanōrathaḥ objectives achieved, kapiḥ monkey, laṅkām Lanka, vīkṣamāṇaḥ gazing, vardhamānasamutsāhaḥ growing zeal, kāryaśēṣam remaining work, acintayat pondered over.

With his objectives achieved, the monkey gazed at Lanka with growing zeal and pondered over the remaining work.
kinnu khalvavaśiṣṭaṅ mē kartavyamiha sāmpratam৷৷5.54.2৷৷

yadēṣāṅ rakṣasāṅ bhūyaḥ santāpajananaṅ bhavēt.


yat that which, ēṣām to them, rakṣasām for the demons, bhūyaḥ again, santāpajananam which can torment, bhavēt will he, kiṅ nu what is, kartavyam the duty, mē to me, iha here, sāmpratam presently, avaśiṣṭam left over.

'Is there anything still left which can further torment the demons here?
vanaṅ tāvatpramathitaṅ prakṛṣṭā rākṣasā hatāḥ৷৷5.54.3.

balaikadēśaḥ kṣapitaśśēṣaṅ durgavināśanam.


vanam garden, pramathitaṅ tāvat broken everywhere, prakṛṣṭāḥ powerful, rākṣasāḥ demons, hatāḥ are killed, balaikadēśaḥ a part of the army, kṣapitaḥ is destroyed, durgavināśanam destruction of the citadel, śēṣam left over.

durgē vināśitē karma bhavētsukhapariśramam.

alpayatnēna kāryē.smin mama syātsaphalaśśramaḥ৷৷5.54.4৷৷


durgē the citadel, vināśitē if destroyed, karma labour, sukhapariśramam happy conclusion, bhavēt will be, asmin in this, kāryē in the task, alpayatnēna with some effort, śramaḥ labour, saphalaḥ successful, syāt will be.

'If the citadel is destroyed it would be a happy conclusion with a little effort. I can successfully complete my task.
yō hyayaṅ mama lāṅgūlē dīpyatē havyavāhanaḥ.

asya santarpaṇaṅ nyāyyaṅ kartumēbhirgṛhōttamaiḥ৷৷5.54.5৷৷


mama my, lāṅgūlē on the tail, yaḥ he who, ayam havyavāhanaḥ this fire, dīpyatē is burning, asya to him, ēbhiḥ with these, gṛhōttamaiḥ best mansions, santarpaṇam offering, kartum to do, nyāyam is proper.

'It would be proper to satiate this fire at the end of my tail by offering it to these excellent mansions (I shall set fire to these houses).
tataḥ pradīptalāṅgūlassavidyudiva tōyadaḥ.

bhavanāgrēṣu laṅkāyā vicacāra mahākapiḥ৷৷5.54.6৷৷


tataḥ then, pradīptalāṅgūlaḥ with his burning tail, mahākapiḥ great monkey, savidyut along with lightning, tōyadaḥ iva rain clouds-like, laṅkāyāḥ of Lanka, bhavanāgrēṣu on tops of the mansions, vicacāra wandered.

The great Hanuman, with his burning tail wandered on tops of the mansions of Lanka, which looked like clouds with lightning.
gṛhādgṛhaṅ rākṣasānāmudyānāni ca vānaraḥ.

vīkṣamāṇō hyasantrastaḥ prāsādāṅśca cacāra saḥ৷৷5.54.7৷৷


saḥ vānaraḥ that vanara, udyānāni ca and even gardens, prāsādāṅśca buildings, vīkṣamāṇaḥ while observing, asantrastaḥ without fear, rākṣasānām demons, gṛhāt from one house, gṛham to the other house, cacāra wandered.

The vanara moved from one house to the other, looking at the gardens and houses of the demons without fear.
avaplutya mahāvēgaḥ prahastasya nivēśanam.

agniṅ tatra sa nikṣipya śvasanēna samō balī৷৷5.54.8৷৷

tatō.nyatpupluvē vēśma mahāpārśvasya vīryavān.

mumōca hanumānagniṅ kālānalaśikhōpamam৷৷5.54.9৷৷


mahāvēgaḥ of great-speed, śvasanēna with the Wind-god, samaḥ equal, balī powerful, vīryavān brave,saḥ he, prahastasya Prahasta's, nivēśanam house, avaplutya jumped down, tatra there, agnim fire, nikṣipya setting, tataḥ then, anyat another, mahāpārśvasya Mahaparsva's, vēśma house, pupluvē jumped, hanumān Hanuman, kālānalaśikhōpamam like the flame of fire at the hour of dissolution, agnim fire, mumōca set.

Powerful and brave Hanuman who was equal to the Wind-god in speed jumped down on the house of Prahasta and set fire to it. From there he jumped on to Mahaparsva's house and set it ablaze. Hanuman appeared like the fire-flame at the time of dissolution.
vajradaṅṣṭrasya ca tadā pupluvē sa mahākapiḥ.

śukasya ca mahātējāssāraṇasya ca dhīmataḥ৷৷5.54.10৷৷


mahātējāḥ very brilliant one, saḥ mahākapiḥ that great vanara, tadā then, vajradaṅṣṭrasya Vajradamshtra's, śukasya Suka's, dhīmataḥ of the wise, sāraṇasya ca Sarana's, pupluvē bounded
on.

The great, brilliant vanara bounded on to Vajradamstra's, of Suka's and wise Sarana's.
tathā cēndrajitō vēśma dadāha hariyūthapaḥ.

jambumālē ssumālēśca dadāha bhavanaṅ tataḥ৷৷5.54.11৷৷


hariyūthapaḥ chief of vanara troops, tathā in that way, indrajitaḥ Indrajit's, vēśma residence, dadāha set fire, tataḥ then, jambumālēḥ Jambumali's, sumālēśca Sumali's, bhavanam building, dadāha burnt.

Thus Hanuman, the chief of the vanaras set fire to Indrajit's residence and then to Jambumali's and Sumali's building.
raśmikētōśca bhavanaṅ sūryaśatrōstathaiva ca.

hrasvakarṇasya daṅṣṭrasya rōmaśasya ca rakṣasaḥ৷৷5.54.12৷৷

yuddhōnmattasya mattasya dhvajagrīvasya rakṣasaḥ.

vidyujjihvasya ghōrasya tathā hastimukhasya ca৷৷5.54.13৷৷

karālasya piśācasya śōṇitākṣasya caiva hi.

kumbhakarṇasya bhavanaṅ makarākṣasya caiva hi৷৷5.54.14৷৷

yajñaśatrōśca bhavanaṅ brahmaśatrōstathaiva ca.

narāntakasya kumbhasya nikumbhasya durātmanaḥ৷৷5.54.15৷৷

varjayitvā mahātējā vibhīṣaṇagṛhaṅ prati.

kramamāṇaḥ kramēṇaiva dadāha haripuṅgavaḥ৷৷5.54.16৷৷


mahātējāḥ brilliant, haripuṅgavaḥ monkey leader, kramēṇaiva gradually, kramamāṇaḥ passing over,
vibhīṣaṇagṛhaṅ prati towards Vibhishana's house, varjayitvā sparing, raśmikētō: ca of Rasmiketu and, bhavanam mansion, tathaiva ca in the same way, sūryaśatrōḥ Suryasatru's, hrasvakarṇasya Hasvakarna's, daṅṣṭrasya Damshtra's, rakṣasaḥ demon, rōmaśasya Romasa's, yuddhōnmattasya Yudhonmatta's, mattasya Matta's, rakṣasaḥ of ogre, dhvajagrīvasya Dhwajagriva's, ghōrasya of the fearsome, vidyujjihvasya Vidyujjihva's, tathā so also, hastimukhasya ca and Hastimukha's, karālasya Karala's, piśācasya Pisacha's, śōṇitākṣasya ca iva hi Sonitaksha's, kumbhakarṇasya Kumbhakarna's, bhavanam mansion, makarākṣasya caiva hi Makaraksha's, yajñaśatrōśca bhavanam Yagnasatru's building, tathaiva ca in the same way, brahmaśatrōḥ Brahmasatru's, narāntakasya Narantaka's, kumbhasya Kumbha's, durātmanaḥ of the wicked -minded, nikumbhasya Vikumbha's.

The brilliant monkey leader bypassed Vibhishanas's house and avoiding it that way set fire to the mansions of other ogres, Rasmiketu, Suryasatru, Hrasvakarna, Vajradamshtra, Romasa, Yuddhonmatta, Matta, Dhwajagriva, Vidyujjihva, Hastimukha, Karala, Pisacha, Sonitaksha, Kumbhakarna, Makaraksha, Yagnasatru, Brahmasatru, Naranthaka, Kumbha, and wicked Nikumbha.
tēṣu tēṣu mahārhēṣu bhavanēṣu mahāyaśāḥ.

gṛhēṣvṛddhimatāmṛddhiṅ dadāha sa mahākapiḥ৷৷5.54.17৷৷


mahāyaśāḥ glorious, saḥ mahākapiḥ that great vanara, ṛddhimatām of wealthy persons, mahārhēṣu among valuable and precious one, tēṣu tēṣu among all those, gṛhēṣu in mansions, ṛddhim wealth, dadāha burnt.

Moving among those highly luxurious mansions the glorious Vanara burnt away the wealth of all the rich demons.
sarvēṣāṅ samatikramya rākṣasēndrasya vīryavān.

āsasādātha lakṣmīvān rāvaṇasya nivēśanam৷৷5.54.18৷৷


vīryavān heroic one, lakṣmīvān illustrious, sarvēṣām of all, samatikramya after crossing, atha then, rākṣasēndrasya of the king of rakshasa's, rāvaṇasya nivēśanam Ravana's palace, āsasāda reached.

Heroic and illustrious Hanuman, having crossed all the residences of the ogres finally reached the palace of Ravana, the king.
tatastasmingṛhē mukhyē nānāratnavibhūṣitē.

mērumandarasaṅkāśē sarvamaṅgaḷaśōbhitē৷৷5.54.19৷৷

pradīptamagnimutsṛjya lāṅgūlāgrē pratiṣṭhitam.

nanāda hanumānvīrō yugāntajaladō yathā৷৷5.54.20৷৷


tataḥ then, vīraḥ hero, hanumān Hanuman, nānāratnavibhūṣitē decorated with different kinds of gems, mērumandarasaṅkāśē resembling mountains Meru and Mandara, sarvamaṅgalaśōbhitē exquisite with auspicious articles, tasmin that, mukhyē chief, gṛhē in a palace, lāṅgūlāgrē at the tip of his burning tail, pratiṣṭhitam set, pradīptam burning, agnim fire, utsṛjya by spreading out, yugāntajaladō yathā like the thundering cloud at the time of dissolution, nanāda thundered.

Then Hanuman, the hero with the burning tail set fire to the chief palace of Ravana that resembled mountains Meru and Mandara, decorated with different kinds of gems and exquisite with several auspicious articles. While the flames were rising up, he roared like the thundering cloud at the time of dissolution.
śvasanēna ca saṅyōgādativēgō mahābalaḥ.

kālāgniriva jajvāla prāvardhata hutāśanaḥ৷৷5.54.21৷৷


hutāśanaḥ consumer of oblations, Fire-god, śvasanēna by the wind, saṅyōgāt by association, ativēgaḥ at great speed, mahābalaḥ mighty, prāvardhata grew, kālāgniriva like the fire at the time of dissolution, jajvāla burnt.

The wind-god's association made the fire spread at great speed. It appeared like fire at the time of dissolution.
pradīptamagniṅ pavanastēṣu vēśmasvacārayat.

abhūcchvasanasaṅyōgādativēgō hutāśanaḥ৷৷5.54.22৷৷


pavanaḥ wind, pradīptam burning, agnim fire, tēṣu in those, vēśmasu in houses, ācārayat spread, śvasanasaṅyōgāt combining with wind, hutāśanaḥ fire, ativēgaḥ at high speed, abhūt spread.

Combined with the wind the fire began to spread, burning the houses with great speed.
tāni kāñcanajālāni muktāmaṇimayāni ca.

bhavanānyavaśīryanta ratnavanti mahānti ca৷৷5.54.23৷৷


kāñcanajālāni golden mesh-work, muktāmaṇimayāni ca with pearls and gems embedded, ratnavanti filled with precious gems, mahānti ca big ones, tāni bhavanāni those buildings, avaśīryanta were demolished.

The palatial structures with windows of golden mesh-work, embedded with pearls and gems and other precious stones tumbled.
saṅjajñē tumulaśśabdō rākṣasānāṅ pradhāvatām.

svagṛhasya paritrāṇē bhagnōtsāhōrjitaśriyām৷৷5.54.24৷৷

nūnamēṣō.gnirāyātaḥ kapirūpēṇa hā iti.


svagṛhasya of ones own house, paritrāṇē in order to save (from burning), pradhāvatām of the running ones, bhagnōtsāhōrjitaśriyām disappointed thoroughly about their multiplying riches, rākṣasānām of demons, nūnam surely, ēṣaḥ agniḥ this fire is, kapirūpēṇa in the form of a monkey, āyātaḥ iti thus come tumulaḥ tumultuous, śabdaḥ noise, saṅjajñē arose

Unable to protect their rich houses, and thoroughly disappointed the demons said, 'Alas, the Fire-god came in the form of a vanara'! A tumultuous sound arose.
krandantyassahasā pētuḥ stanandhayadharāḥ striyaḥ৷৷5.54.25৷৷

kāścidagniparītēbhyō harmēbhyō muktamūrdhajāḥ.

patantyō rējirē.bhrēbhyassaudāmanya ivāmbarāt৷৷5.54.26৷৷


kāścit a few, striyaḥ women, stanandhayadharāḥ breast-feeding their young ones, muktamūrdhajāḥ with their hair let loose, krandantyaḥ shouting, agniparītēbhyaḥ from the burning ones, harmyēbhyaḥ from mansions, sahasā at once, pētuḥ jumped out, ambarāt from the sky, abhrēbhyaḥ from the clouds, patantyaḥ alighting, saudāminyaḥ iva like the lightenings, rējirē glowed.

A few she-demons at once jumped out of their burning mansions surrounded by fire. They held their breast-feeding babies in their arms, their hair let loose shouting as they jumped. As they were alighting, they glowed like lightnings dropping from the clouds.
vajravidrumavaidūryamuktārajatasaṅhitān.

vicitrānbhavanāddhātūn syandamānāndadarśa saḥ৷৷5.54.27৷৷


saḥ he, vajravidrumavaiḍhūryamuktārajatasaṅhitān mixed with diamonds, corals, Vaiduryas, pearls and silver, vicitrān colourful ones, bhavanāt from the mansion, syandamānān molten, dhātūn minerals, dadarśa he saw.

Hanuman saw many colourful molten minerals mixed with diamonds, corals vaiduryas, pearls and silver flowing (dropping) from every mansion.
nāgnistṛpyati kāṣṭhānāṅ tṛṇānāṅ ca yathā tathā.

hanūmān rākṣasēndāṇāṅ viśastānāṅ na tṛpyati৷৷5.54.28৷৷


agniḥ fire, kāṣṭhānām with dry logs, tṛṇānām blades of grass, na tṛpyati is not satisfied, rākṣasēndrāṇām of demon kings, viśastānām dead ones, na tṛpyati is not satisfied.

Just as fire is not satisfied with dry sticks and grass Hanuman was not satisfied with the dead demons.
kvacitkiṅśukasaṅkāśāḥ kvacicchālmalisannibhāḥ৷৷5.54.29৷৷

kvacitkuṅkumasaṅkāśāśśikhā vahnēścakāśirē.


vahnēḥ of the fire, śikhāḥ flames, vahnēḥ fire's, kvacit at some place, kiṅśukasaṅkāśāḥ appearing like kimsuka flowers, kvacit at some other place, śālmalisannibhāḥ appearing like Salmali, kvacit still in some other places, kuṅkumasaṅkāśāḥ saffron like, cakāśirē shone

The flames of fire were shining like kimsuka flowers here, like salmali wood there, and like saffron flowers elsewhere.
hanūmatā vēgavatā vānarēṇa mahātmanā.

laṅkāpuraṅ pradagdhaṅ tadrudrēṇa tripuraṅ yathā৷৷5.54.30৷৷


vēgavatā vānarēṇa by the vanara of great spped, mahātmanā by the great self, hanūmatā by Hanuman, tat that, laṅkāpuram Lanka city, rudrēṇa by Rudra, tripuraṅ yathā like Tripura, pradagdham was burnt.

Hanuman, endowed with great speed, burnt Lanka just as Tripurari, or Rudra burnt theTripuras (three cities of gold, silver and iron).
tatastu laṅkāpuraparvatāgrē samutthitō bhīmaparākramō.gniḥ.

prasārya cūḍāvalayaṅ pradīptō hanūmatā vēgavatā visṛṣṭaḥ৷৷5.54.31৷৷


tataḥ then, vēgavatā by the hero of great speed, hanūmatā by Hanuman, visṛṣṭaḥ lit, bhīmaparākramaḥ of fierce valour, agniḥ fire, cūḍāvalayam creating a circle, prasārya having spread, pradīptaḥ burning, laṅkāpuraparvatāgrē on the mountain top of Lanka, samutthitaḥ rose.

The fierce fire lit by Hanuman, the hero endowed with great speed, spread around in circles and shot up flying high to the top of the Trikuta mountain on which Lanka was located.
yugāntakālānalatulyavēga ssamārutō.gnirvavṛdhē divispṛk.

vidhūmaraśmirbhavanēṣu saktō rakṣaśśarīrājyasamarpatārciḥ৷৷5.54.32৷৷


vidhūmaraśmiḥ shining without smoke, bhavanēṣu in the mansions, saktaḥ attached with rakṣaḥśarīrājyasamarpitārciḥ fat of the demons body adding, agniḥ fire, samārutaḥ fanned by the wind, divispṛk shot up into the sky, yugāntakālānalatulyavēgaḥ spreading fast just as the fire with the end of the universe, vavṛdhē increased.

Fanned by the wind, inflamed by the fat from the corpses of the demons, the fire spread in the mansions burning without smoke. It spread with great speed like the fire at the end of the universe.
ādityakōṭīsadṛśassutējā laṅkāṅ samastāṅ parivārya tiṣṭhan.

śabdairanēkairaśaniprarūḍhairbhindannivāṇḍaṅ prababhau mahāgniḥ৷৷5.54.33৷৷


ādityakōṭīsadṛśaḥ appeared like crores of Suns, sutējāḥ radiant, samastām entire, laṅkām Lanka, parivārya having surrounded, tiṣṭhan while getting settled, mahāgniḥ great fire, anēkaiḥ by many, aśaniprarūḍhaiḥ produced like Indra's thunderbolt, śabdaiḥ with sounds, aṇḍam whole universe, bhindanniva as if breaking, prababhau was glowing.

The highly radiant fire stood like a crore of Suns surrounding the entire Lanka. It was glowing, cracking like Indra's thunderbolt as though the whole universe was collapsing.
tatrāmbarādagniratipravṛddhō rūkṣaprabhaḥ kiṅśukapuṣpacūḍaḥ.

nirvāṇadhūmākularājayaśca nīlōtpalābhāḥ pracakāśirē.bhrāḥ৷৷5.54.34৷৷


tatra there, rūkṣaprabhaḥ spreading intense brightness, kiṅśukapuṣpacūḍaḥ appearing like kimsuka flowers, agniḥ fire, aṅbarāt from the sky, atipravṛddhaḥ increasing violently, abhrāḥ the clouds, nirvāṇadhūmākularājayaḥ engulfed by the smoke rising out of fire that had been put off, nīlōtpalābhāḥ like blue lotuses, pracakāśirē shone.

The dazzling flames of fire red like kimsuka flowers shot up violently into the sky. The clouds engulfed by the smoke rising from the subsiding fire was shining like the lustre of blue lotuses .
vajrī mahēndrastridaśēśvarō vā sākṣādyamō vā varuṇō.nilō vā.

rudrō.gnirarkō dhanadaśca sōmō na vānarō.yaṅ svayamēva kālaḥ৷৷5.54.35৷৷


ayam this, vānaraḥ vanara, na not, vajrī Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, tridaśēśvaraḥ the lord of gods, mahēndraḥ vā or Indra, sākṣāt personally, yamaḥ vā Yama, varuṇaḥ Varuna, anilō vā or the Wind god, rudraḥ Rudra, agniḥ the Fire-god, arkaḥ Sun, dhanadaśca Or Kubera, sōmaḥ Moon, svayam himself, kālaḥ ēva vā or the god of death?

'Is this the wielder of thunderbolt Indra, who is the king of gods? Is it Yama himself? Is It the Wind-god, or Fire-god, or Varuna or Rudra? Is it Kubera or Sun or Moon or is it the god of death himself? He cannot be a mere monkey, indeed.
kiṅ brahmaṇassarvapitāmahasya sarvasya dhātuścaturānanasya.

ihā৷৷gatō vānararūpadhārī rakṣōpasaṅhārakaraḥ prakōpaḥ৷৷5.54.36৷৷


sarvapitāmahasya the grandfather of all, sarvasya of all worlds, dhātuḥ of the creator, caturānanasya of the four-faced, brahmaṇaḥ of Brahma?, rakṣōpasaṅhārakaraḥ to kill the clan of demons, prakōpaḥ anger, vānararūpadhārī in the form of vanara, iha here, upayātaḥ kim has he come here?

'Or is it Grandfather Brahma, the supreme four-faced god enraged and arrived in the form of vanara to kill the clan of demons?
kiṅ vaiṣṇavaṅ vā kapirūpamētya rakṣōvināśāya paraṅ sutējaḥ.

anantamavyaktamacintyamēkaṅ svamāyayā sāmpratamāgataṅ vā৷৷5.54.37৷৷


anantam boundless, avyaktam indescribable, acintyam unthinkable, ēkam peerless, vaiṣṇavam Visnu, param supreme, sutējaḥ great glory, sāmpratam presently, rakṣōvināśāya for the destruction of demons, svamāyayā by his own maya, kapirūpam in the form of monkey, ētya having come, āgataṅ kiṅ vā or has he fallen?

'Can he be the vast boundless energy, the unthinkable and infinite lord Visnu assuming the monkey-form? Is he the peerless, unmanifest form beyond all imagination who has arrived here by virtue of his Maya (illusory power) in order to
destroy the demons'?
ityēvamūcurbahavō viśiṣṭā rakṣōgaṇāstatra samētya sarvē.

saprāṇisaṅghāṅ sagṛhāṅ savṛkṣāṅ dagdhāṅ purīṅ tāṅ sahasā samīkṣya৷৷5.54.38৷৷


saprāṇisaṅghām including all the creatures, sagṛhām and homes, savṛkṣām with trees, tāṅ purīm that city, sahasā quickly, dagdhām burnt,samīkṣya observed, bahavaḥ many, viśiṣṭāḥ eminent men, sarvē all, rakṣōgaṇāḥ demons troops, tatra there, samētya having collected together, iti ēvam in this manner, ūcuḥ spoke each other.

All eminent demons having collected together, quickly surveyed the situation.Seeing the burnt city, with all its living creatures, houses and trees consigned to the flames, they spoke to one another.
tatastu laṅkā sahasā pradagdhā sarākṣasā sāśvarathā sanāgā.

sapakṣisaṅghā samṛgā savṛkṣā rurōda dīnā tumulaṅ saśabdam৷৷5.54.39৷৷


tataḥ then, sarākṣasā including those demons, sāśvarathā with chariots and horses, sanāgā with elephants, sapakṣisaṅghā with flocks of birds, samṛgāḥ with animals, savṛkṣāḥ the trees, laṅkā Lanka, sahasā all of a sudden, pradagdhā burnt, dīnā piteous, tumulam tumultuous, saśabdam loudly, rurōda cried.

Lanka with its chariots horses, elephants, flocks of birds, animals and trees burnt all of a sudden, the ogres cried loudly and piteously.
hā tāta hā putraka kānta mitra hā jīvitaṅ bhōgayutaṅ supuṇyam.

rakṣōbhirēvaṅ bahudhā bruvadbhi śśabdaḥ kṛtō ghōratarassubhīmaḥ৷৷5.54.40৷৷


hā tāta o father dear, hā putraka O son, kānta O my dear, mitra O friend, bhōgayutam that which is enjoyable, supuṇyam very pious, hā jīvitam alas such life, ēvam this way, bahudhā in many ways, bruvadbhiḥ: by those speaking out, rakṣōbhiḥ by demons, ghōrataraḥ in a terrific way, subhīṣaḥ dreadful, śabdaḥ noise, kṛtaḥ was made.

"O father dear! O son! O my dear! O friend! alas, the life which is enjoyable, sacred and prosperous is destroyed in this way". Saying this, the demons cried out dreadfully and loudly.
hutāśanajvālasamāvṛtā sā hatapravīrā parivṛttayōdhā

hanūmataḥ krōdhabalābhibhūtā babhūva śāpōpahatēva laṅkā৷৷5.54.41৷৷


hutāśanajvālasamāvṛtā engulfed in the flames spread by the Fire-god, hatapravīrāḥ with its heroes dead, parivṛttayōdhā with the retreating troops, hanūmataḥ Hanuman's, krōdhabalābhibhūtā by Hanuman's power of anger, sā laṅkā that Lanka, śāpōpahatēva as if cursed, babhūva became.

With the Fire god spreading flames all over, heroes dead, retreating troops shattered by Hanuman's anger, Lanka appeared as though it was cursed.
sa sambhramatrastaviṣaṇṇarākṣasāṅ samujjvalajjvālahutāśanāṅkitām.

dadarśa laṅkāṅ hanumānmahāmanāḥ svayambhūkōpōpahatāmivāvanim৷৷5.54.42৷৷


mahāmanāḥ a highly sensitive person, hanumān Hanuman, sasambhramatrastaviṣaṇṇarākṣasām with demons perplexed, scared and sorrowful, samujvalajjvālahutāśanāṅkitām succumbed to the flames of the burning fire-god, laṅkām Lanka, svayambhūkōpōpahatām hit by the anger of Brahma (at the time of dissolution of the universe), avanim iva like the earth, laṅkām Lanka, dadarśa saw.

Highly sensitive Hanuman saw the city of Lanka filled with perplexed, scared and sorrowful demons, Lanka succumbed to the flames of fire-god and looked as if it was hit by the anger of Brahma, the self-born god.
bhaṅktvā vanaṅ pādaparatnasaṅkulaṅ hatvā tu rakṣāṅsi mahānti saṅyugē.

dagdhvā purīṅ tāṅ gṛharatnamālinīṅ tasthau hanūmānpavanātmajaḥ kapiḥ৷৷5.54.43৷৷


pavanātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanūmān Hanuman, pādaparatnasaṅkulam that which was full of
excellent trees, vanam garden, bhaṅktvā after breaking, saṅyugē in war, mahānti great, rakṣāṅsi demons, hatvā after killing, gṛharatnamālinīm with rows of beautiful houses, tāṅ purīm that city, dagdhvā after burning, tasthau stood.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god stood at ease having shattered the garden that was full of excellent trees, and killed the demons and burnt down rows of beautiful houses in the city.
trikūṭaśṛṅgāgratalē vicitrē pratiṣṭhitō vānararājasiṅhaḥ.

pradīptalāṅgūlakṛtārcimālī vyarājatā৷৷ditya ivāṅśumālī৷৷5.54.44৷৷


vicitrē on a wonderful, trikūṭaśṛṅgāgratalē on the peak of Trikuta mountain, pratiṣṭhitaḥ stationed, pradīptalāṅgūlakṛtārcimālī enriched by the flames emerging from his burning tail, vānararājasiṅhaḥ a lion among vanara chiefs, aṅśumālī surrounded by rays of light, ādityaḥ iva like the Sun, vyarājata was resplendent.

Standing on the peak of Trikuta mountain with his tail burning like the aura of the Sun, the lion among vanaras looked resplendent like the Sun surrounded by his rays.
sa rākṣasāṅstānsubahūṅśca hatvā vanaṅ ca bhaṅktvā bahupādapaṅ tat.

visṛjya rakṣōbhavanēṣu cāgniṅ jagāma rāmaṅ manasā mahātmā৷৷5.54.45৷৷


mahātmā a great self, saḥ he, subahūn many of them, tān rākṣasān the demons, hatvā having killed, bahupādapam having many trees, tat vanaṅ ca that garden also, bhaṅktvā after breaking, rakṣōbhavanēṣu in the mansions of demons, agnim fire, visṛjya after setting, manasā in his mind, rāmam Rama, jagāma reached.

Great Hanuman, sought Rama's presence in his mind after killing many demons, breaking down many trees of the garden, and setting fire to the mansions of demons.
tatastu taṅ vānaravīramukhyaṅ mahābalaṅ mārutatulyavēgam.

mahāmatiṅ vāyusutaṅ variṣṭhaṅ pratuṣṭuvurdēvagaṇāśca sarvē৷৷5.54.46৷৷


tataḥ then, vānaravīramukhyam chief of heroic vanaras, mahābalam of great strength, mārutatulyavēgam who had the speed of wind, mahāmatim very wise, variṣṭham efficient, taṅ vāyusutam son of the Wind-god, sarvē all, dēvagaṇāḥ gods, pratuṣṭuvuḥ praised.

All the gods praised the vanara chief, son of the Wind-god, who was powerful, wise and efficient and had the speed of the Wind.
bhaṅktvā vanaṅ mahātējā hatvā rakṣāṅsi saṅyugē.

dagdhvā laṅkāpurīṅ ramyāṅ rarāja sa mahākapiḥ৷৷5.54.47৷৷


mahātējāḥ splendid, mahākapiḥ great monkey, vanam garden, bhaṅktvā having destroyed, saṅyugē in the war, rakṣāṅsi demons, hatvā having killed, ramyām delightful, laṅkāpurīm Lanka city, dagdhvā having burnt, rarāja shone.

Hanuman destroyed the garden, killed the demons, burnt the city of Lanka and was shining with delight
tatra dēvāssagandharvāssiddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ.

dṛṣṭvā laṅkāṅ pradagdhāṅ tāṅ vismayaṅ paramaṅ gatāḥ৷৷5.54.48৷৷


tatra there, sagandharvāḥ including the gandharvas, dēvāḥ gods, siddhāśca siddhas, paramarṣayaḥ great sages, dagdhām burnt, tāṅ laṅkām purīm that Lanka city, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, paramam supreme, vismayam wonder, gatāḥ experienced.

The gandharvas, gods, siddhas and great sages were amazed at seeing the burning city of Lanka৷৷
taṅ dṛṣṭvā vānaraśrēṣṭhaṅ hanumantaṅ mahākapim.

kālāgniriti sañcintya sarvabhūtāni tatrasuḥ৷৷5.54.49৷৷


vānaraśrēṣṭham best of vanaras, mahākapim great monkey, taṅ hanumantam that Hanuman, dṛṣṭvā after
seeing, kālāgniriti that it is the fire of dissolution, sañcintya thinking, sarvabhūtāni all beings, tatrasuḥ feared.

All beings were afraid of Hanuman thinking that he was the fatal fire, consuming worlds at the hour of dissolution .
dēvāśca sarvē munipuṅgavāśca gandharvavidyādharanāgayakṣāḥ.

bhūtāni sarvāṇi mahānti tatra jagmuḥ parāṅ prītimatulyarūpām৷৷5.54.50৷৷


tatra there,sarvē all,dēvāśca gods, munipuṅgavāśca great sages,gandharvavidyādharanāgayakṣāḥ gandharvas, vidyadharas, nagas and yakshas, mahānti great, sarvāṇi all, bhūtāni beings, atulyarūpām of a matchless form, parām supreme, prītim pleasure, jagmuḥ felt.

All gods, great sages, gandharvas, vidyadharas, nagas and yakshas and all great beings experienced supreme joy.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē catuḥpañcāśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyfourth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
