[Hanuman takes leave of Sita -- sets out for the northern shore -- Description of Arishta mountain]

tatastu śiṅśupāmūlē jānakīṅ paryupasthitām.

abhivādyābravīddiṣṭyā paśyāmi tvāmihākṣatām৷৷5.56.1৷৷


tataḥ then, śiṅśupāmūlē under the simsupa tree, paryupasthitām stationed, jānakīm Janakai, abhivādya offered salutation, abravīt said, diṣṭyā luckily, akṣatām unscathed, tvām you, iha here, paśyāmi I see you.

Then Hanuman offered salutations to Janaki, stationed at the foot of the simsupa tree, and said, "Luckily I see you unscathed."
tatastaṅ prasthitaṅ sītā vīkṣamāṇā punaḥ punaḥ.

bhartṛsnēhānvitaṅ vākyaṅ hanumantamabhāṣata৷৷5.56.2৷৷


tataḥ then, prasthitam him who was ready to start his journey, taṅ hanumantam that Hanuman, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, vīkṣamāṇā looking at him, sītā Sita, bhartṛsnēhānvitam showing her love for her husband, vākyam this word, abhāṣata spoke.

Looking at Hanuman again and again, as he was ready to start on his return journey, thus spoke Sita expressing her love for her husband:
kāmamasya tvamēvaikaḥ kāryasya parisādhanē.

paryāptaḥ paravīraghna yaśasyastē balōdayaḥ৷৷5.56.3৷৷


paravīraghnaḥ destroyer of foes, asya kāryasya of this task, parisādhanē in this task (of rescuing), tvam you, ēkaḥ ēva singlehanded, kāmam indeed, paryāptaḥ capable, tē to you, balōdayaḥ rise of strength, yaśasyaḥ will bring glory.

"O destroyer of foes, you are capable of rescuing me singlehanded. Your success will raise your strength and bring glory.
śaraistu saṅkulāṅ kṛtvā laṅkāṅ parabalārdanaḥ.

māṅ nayēdyadi kākutsthastattasya sadṛśaṅ bhavēt৷৷5.56.4৷৷


parabalārdanaḥ slayer of enemy forces,kākutsthaḥ Kakutstha,laṅkām to Lanka, śaraiḥ tu with arrows indeed, saṅkulām spreading, kṛtvā all over, mām me, nayēdyadi if he takes me, tat that, tasya for him, sadṛśam worthy, bhavēt will be.

"If Kakutstha Rama, the slayer of enemy forces comes to Lanka, fills it with his arrows and takes me back, it will be worthy of him.
tadyathā tasya vikrāntamanurūpaṅ mahātmanaḥ.

bhavatyāhavaśūrasya tathā tvamupapādaya৷৷5.56.5৷৷


tat that, mahātmanaḥ the exalted, āhavaśūrasya who is chivalrous in the battle, tasya his, vikrāntam heroic advance, anurūpam worthy of his stature, yathā as such, bhavati will be, tathā that manner, tvam you, upapādaya act.

"You should act in such a manner that the exalted Rama, who is chivalrous in the battlefield, exhibits his valour worthy of his stature".
tadarthōpahitaṅ vākyaṅ praśritaṅ hētusaṅhitam.

niśamya hanumāṅstasyā vākyamuttaramabravīt৷৷5.56.6৷৷


hanumān Hanuman, praśritam properly inclined, hētusaṅhitam support with reason, arthōpahitam meaningful, tasyāḥ her, tat that, vākyam word, niśamya after hearing, uttaram reply, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke.

Hearing her meaningful reply which was well-disposed and reasonable, Hanuman
replied:
kṣipramēṣyati kākutsthaḥ haryṛkṣapravarairvṛtaḥ.

yastē yudhi vijityārīn śōkaṅ vyapanayiṣyati৷৷5.56.7৷৷


kākutsthaḥ Kakutstha, haryṛkṣapravaraiḥ with the foremost among vanaras and bears, vṛtaḥ surrounded, kṣipram very soon, ēṣyati he will come, yaḥ he who, yudhi in battle, arīn enemies, vijitya having won, tē your, śōkam sorrow, vyapanayiṣyati will remove.

"Rama will come soon with the best of vanaras and bears. He would win the battle and remove your sorrrow.
ēvamāśvāsya vaidēhīṅ hanumān mārutātmajaḥ.

gamanāya matiṅ kṛtvā vaidēhīmabhyavādayat৷৷5.56.8৷৷


mārutātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, vaidēhīm to Vaidehi, ēvam in that way, āśvāsya having consoled, gamanāya to depart, matim his mind, kṛtvā after deciding, vaidēhīm to Vaidehi, abhyavādayat respectfully saluted.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god having consoled Vaidehi, saluted her respectfully and decided to depart.
tatassa kapiśārdūlaḥ svāmisandarśanōtsukaḥ.

ārurōha giriśrēṣṭhamariṣṭamarimardanaḥ৷৷5.56.9৷৷


tataḥ then, arimardanaḥ crusher of foes, saḥ he, kapiśārdūlaḥ a tiger among vanaras, svāmisandarśanōtsukaḥ anxious to see his lord, ariṣṭam Arishta, giriśrēṣṭham excellent mountain, ārurōha ascended.

Then Hanuman, the crusher of enemies, a tiger among vanaras anxious to see his lord ascended the mount Arishta.
tuṅgapadmakajuṣṭābhirnīlābhirvanarājibhiḥ.

sōttarīyamivāmbhōdaiḥ śṛṅgāntaravilambibhiḥ৷৷5.56.10৷৷


tuṅgapadmakajuṣṭābhi: by those choicest tall padmaka trees, nīlābhiḥ by dark ones, vanarājibhiḥ with forest ranges, śṛṅgāntaravilambibhiḥ hanging down from the spaces between the peaks of mountain, ambhōdaiḥ the rainy clouds, sōttarīyamiva as if covered with an upper garment.

Mount Arishta was full of blue forest-ranges with choicest tall padmaka trees. With clouds hanging on the slopes of mountain peaks, it appeared as though the mountain was wrapped in an upper garment.
bōdhyamānamiva prītyā divākarakaraiśśubhaiḥ.

unmiṣantamivōddhūtairlōcanairiva dhātubhiḥ৷৷5.56.11৷৷


śubhaiḥ with auspicious ones, divākarakaraiḥ with Sun's rays, prītyā affectionately, bōdhyamānamiva as if he was being awakened, uddhūtaiḥ with those pushed up (by wind), lōcanairiva like with the eyes, dhātubhiḥ with the minerals, unmiṣantamiva as if he opening.

As if the mountain was awakened from sleep by the rays of the blessed Sun. With the colour of glowing minerals exuding, it was as if the mountain was looking out with his eyes open. (The minerals underneath the mud appear when wind blows removing the dust covering them. The glowing minerals are fancied to be eyes of the mountain.)
tōyaughananissvanairmandraiḥ prādhītamiva parvatam.

pragītamiva vispaṣṭairnānāprasravaṇasvanaiḥ৷৷5.56.12৷৷


mandraiḥ with loud, tōyaughanisvanaiḥ sounds of gurgling masses of waters, prādhītamiva as if reciting (loudly), vispaṣṭaiḥ with clear sounds, nānāprasravaṇasvanaiḥ with different kinds of sounds of water-falls, pragītamiva as if singing, parvatam mountain.

With the loud sounds of masses of gurgling waters, the mountain appeared as though
it was standing and reciting (the Vedas) loudly. With murmuring sounds of different waterfalls, it appeared as though the mountain was singing. (The sage differentiates the steadily trickling water-sound from the rhythmic musical sounds of water-falls.)
dēvadārubhiratyuccairūrdhvabāhumiva sthitam.

prapātajalanirghōṣaiḥ prākruṣṭamiva sarvataḥ৷৷5.56.13৷৷


atyuccaiḥ by the tall ones, dēvadārubhiḥ with devadaru trees, ūrdhvabāhumiva as if with raised hands, sthitam standing, prapātajalanirghōṣaiḥ with the sounds of waterfalls, sarvataḥ all over, prākruṣṭamiva like the reverberations

With the tall devadaru trees on the mountain, it appeared as if the sages were standing with shoulders lifted up and performing penance. The sounds of waterfalls filled all over with reverberations.
vēpamānamiva śyāmaiḥ kampamānaiśśaradvanaiḥ.

vēṇubhirmārutōddhūtaiḥ kūjantamiva kīcakaiḥ৷৷5.56.14৷৷


śyāmaiḥ with dark ones, kampamānaiḥ with shaking, śaradvanaiḥ clouds of autumn, vēpamānamiva as if trembling, vēṇubhiḥ kīcakaiḥ with hollow bamboos, mārutōddhūtaiḥ hit by the wind, kīcakaiḥ hollow bamboos rattling in the wind, kūjantamiva appearing like the warbling sound.

The mountain appeared as if trembling with the dark clouds of autumn. The shrill sounds pasing through the hollow bamboos filled with air appeared as if it was producing sweet musical notes.
niśśvasantamivāmarṣādghōrairāśīviṣōttamaiḥ.

nīhārakṛtagambhīrairdhyāyantamiva gahvaraiḥ৷৷5.56.15৷৷


ghōraiḥ with dreadful ones, āśīviṣōttamaiḥ with poisonous snakes, niḥśvasantamiva as if hissing, nīhārakṛtagambhīraiḥ with majestically covered heavy mist, gahvaraiḥ with caves, dhyāyantamiva as though meditating, controlling all senses.

The mountain was as though hissing like a dreadful, poisonous snake. With the caves standing majestically covered with mist, the mountain appeared as if it was meditating.
mēghapādanibhaiḥ pādaiḥ prakrāntamiva sarvataḥ.

jṛṅmbhamāṇamivā.kāśē śikharairabhramālibhiḥ৷৷5.56.16৷৷


mēghapādanibhaiḥ appearing like the feet of clouds, pādaiḥ with its feet, sarvata: all over, prakrāntamiva as if traversing, abhramālibhiḥ with ranges of clouds, śikharaiḥ with its peaks, ākāśē in the sky, jṛmbhamāṇamiva as if yawning.

With the ranges of foot-hills appearing like the feet of clouds traversing, with its peaks like garlands of clouds traversing over the mountain, it made one feel it was yawning.
kūṭaiśca bahudhā kīrṇaiśśōbhitaṅ bahukandaraiḥ.

sālatālāśvakarṇaiśca vaṅśaiśca bahubhirvṛtam৷৷5.56.17৷৷


bahudhā many kinds, kīrṇaiḥ scattered with, bahukandaraiḥ with many caves, kūṭaiśca with mountain peaks, śōbhitam delighting, bahubhiḥ with many, sālatālāśvakarṇaiśca with Sal, palms, Aswakarna trees and, vaṅśaiśca with bamboos and reeds, vṛtam canopied with.

With many kinds of caves and peaks scattered all over, the mountain looked delightful. It was canopied with numerous trees like Sal, palms, Aswakarnas and bamboos.
latāvitānairvitataiḥ puṣpavadbhiralaṅkṛtam.

nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇaṅ dhātuniṣyandabhūṣitam৷৷5.56.18৷৷


vitataiḥ with those spread out, puṣpavadbhiḥ with those filled with flowers, latāvitānaiḥ with creepers stretched all over, alaṅkṛtam decorated, nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇam crowded with herds of animals, dhātuniṣyandabhūṣitam decorated with colourful minerals dropping down.

It was spread with creepers filled with beautiful flowers and herds of animals. The colourful minerals flowing down decorated the mountain.
bahuprasravaṇōpētaṅ śilāsañcayasaṅkaṭam.

maharṣiyakṣagandharvakinnarōragasēvitam৷৷5.56.19৷৷


bahuprasravaṇōpētam full of waterfalls, śilāsañcayasaṅkaṭam with heaps of rocks making (the streams' flow difficult), maharṣiyakṣagandharvakinnarōragasēvitam attended with sages, yakshas, gandharvas, kinnaras and nagas.

There were many streams of water flowing and rocks making it difficult for the streams to flow. The mountain was inhabited by sages, yakshas, gandharvas, kinnaras and nagas, and uragas.
latāpādapasaṅghātaṅ siṅhādhyuṣitakandaram.

vyāghrasaṅghasamākīrṇaṅ svādumūlaphaladrumam৷৷5.56.20৷৷


latāpādapasaṅghātam with clusters of creepers and trees, siṅhādhyuṣitakandaram caves inhabited by lions, vyāghrasaṅghasamākīrṇam herds of tigers scattered all over, svādumūlaphaladrumam full of trees bearing tasty roots and fruits.

The clusters of creepers, and trees bearing tasty fruits and roots were uprooted. There were caves inhabited by lions. Herds of tigers were scattered all over (by the impetus of Hanuman's pressure on the mountain).
tamārurōha hanumān parvataṅ pavanātmajaḥ.

rāmadarśanaśīghrēṇa praharṣēṇābhicōditaḥ৷৷5.56.21৷৷


pavanātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, hanumān Hanuman, rāmadarśanaśīghrēṇa anxious to see Rama soon, praharṣēṇa with joy, abhicōditaḥ prompted, taṅ parvatam that mountain, ārurōha ascended.

Anxious to see Rama soon, the son of the Wind-god ascended the mountain happily.
tēna pādatalākrāntā ramyēṣu girisānuṣu.

saghōṣāssamaśīryanta śilāścūrṇīkṛtāstataḥ৷৷5.56.22৷৷


tataḥ then, ramyēṣu in delightful ones, girisānuṣu on mountain ranges, tēna by him, pādatalākrāntāḥ crushed by his feet, śilāḥ rocks, saghōṣāḥ making loud sound, cūrṇīkṛtāḥ reduced to powder, samaśīryanta rolled down.

Crushed under Hanuman's feet the rocks making a loud noise on the beautiful mountain ranges rolled down, reduced to powder.
sa tamāruhya śailēndraṅ vyavardhata mahākapiḥ.

dakṣiṇāduttaraṅ pāraṅ prārthayan lavaṇāmbhasaḥ৷৷5.56.23৷৷


saḥ mahākapiḥ that great Hanuman, lavaṇāmbhasaḥ of the salt-water ocean, dakṣiṇāt from the South, uttaraṅ pāram towards northern shore, prārthayan desiring, taṅ śailēndram that king of mountains, āruhya having ascended, vyavardhata started enlarging body.

On ascending the king of mountains, desiring to reach the northern shore of the salt-water ocean from the Southern shore, he enlarged his body (in preparation to leap).
adhiruhya tatō vīraḥ parvataṅ pavanātmajaḥ.

dadarśa sāgaraṅ bhīmaṅ mīnōraganiṣēvitam৷৷5.56.24৷৷


tataḥ then, vīraḥ hero, pavanātmajaḥ son of the Wind-god, parvatam mountain, adhiruhya having ascended, mīnōraganiṣēvitam inhabited by fishes and sankes, bhīmam dreadful, sāgaram ocean, dadarśa saw.

Then the heroic son of the Wind-god, who had ascended the mountain saw the dreadful ocean inhabited by fishes and snakes.
sa māruta ivā.kāśaṅ mārutasyātmasambhavaḥ.

prapēdē hariśārdūlō dakṣiṇāduttarāṅ diśam৷৷5.56.25৷৷


mārutasya Wind-god's, ātmasambhavaḥ son, saḥ hariśārdūlaḥ that tiger among monkeys, dakṣiṇāt from the south, uttarāṅdiśam towards northern side, mārutaḥ iva like the wind-god, ākāśam sky, prapēdē leaped.

Hanuman, the tiger among monkeys leaped into the sky like the Wind-god from the south to the north shore.
sa tadā pīḍitastēna kapinā parvatōttamaḥ.

rarāsa saha tairbhūtaiḥ praviśanvasudhātalam৷৷5.56.26৷৷

kampamānaiśca śikharaiḥ patadbhirapi ca drumaiḥ.


tadā then, tēna kapinā by that vanara, pīḍitaḥ pressed, saḥ parvatōttamaḥ that great mountain, taiḥ those, bhūtaiḥ saha along with the creatures, vasudhātalam to the earth, praviśan while entering, kampamānaiḥ with shaking, śikharaiḥ with peaks, patadbhiḥ with dropped, drumaiḥ with trees, rarāsa crushed down making great sound.

Pressed under the feet of Hanuman, the great mountain made loud sound sinking into the earth along with all its creatures, with its shaken mountain peaks and uprooted trees dropping down.
tasyōruvēgōnmathitāḥ pādapāḥ puṣpaśālinaḥ৷৷5.56.27৷৷

nipēturbhūtalē rugṇāśśakrāyudhahatā iva.


tasya his, ūruvēgāt with the force of his thighs, mathitāḥ shaken, puṣpaśālinaḥ trees with blossoms, pādapāḥ trees, rugṇāḥ men suffering with diseases, śakrāyudhahatā iva as if struck by Indra's thunderbolt, bhūtalē on the ground, nipētuḥ fell.

Shaken by the violent force of Hanuman's thighs, the blossoming trees fell on the
ground like sickmen hit by Indra's thunderbolt.
kandarāntarasaṅsthānāṅ pīḍitānāṅ mahaujasām৷৷5.56.28৷৷

siṅhānāṅ ninadō bhīmō nabhō bhindan sa śuśruvē.


kandarāntarasaṅsthānām of those residing in mountain caves, pīḍitānām of those crushed, mahaujasām of the powerful ones, siṅhānām of lions, bhīmaḥ terrific, saḥ ninadaḥ that noise, nabhaḥ sky, bhindan as if breaking, śuśruvē was heard.

The dreadful roar of strong lions, lying in mountain-caves was heard cracking the sky when they were crushed in the turmoil.
trastavyāvṛttavasanā vyākulīkṛtabhūṣaṇāḥ৷৷5.56.29৷৷

vidyādharyaḥ samutpētussahasā dharaṇīdharāt.


vidyādharyaḥ Vidyadharis, trastavyāvṛttavasanāḥ with their clothes slipped with fear, vyākulīkṛtabhūṣaṇāḥ with ornaments disarrayed, sahasā at ones, dharaṇīdharāt from the mountain, samutpētuḥ flew.

The Vidyadharis with their clothes slipped and ornaments disarrayed in fear, at once flew from the mountain.
atipramāṇā balinō dīptajihvā mahāviṣāḥ৷৷5.56.30৷৷

nipīḍitaśirōgrīvā vyacēṣṭanta mahāhayaḥ.


atipramāṇāḥ very big ones in size, balinaḥ strong ones, dīptajihvāḥ with glowing tongues, mahāviṣāḥ highly poisonous, mahāhayaḥ huge snakes, nipīḍitaśirōgrīvāḥ pressed on their heads and necks, vyacēṣṭanta started protruding.

Highly powerful, huge and poisonous snakes with their glowing tongues protruded, pressed on their heads and necks (by Hanuman).
kinnarōragandharvayakṣavidyādharāstadā৷৷5.56.31৷৷

pīḍitaṅ taṅ nagavaraṅ tyaktvā gaganamāsthitā:.


tadā then, kinnarōragagandharvayakṣavidyādharāḥ kinnaras, uragas, gandharvas, yakshas and vidyadharas, pīḍitam tormented, taṅ nagavaram that mountain, tyaktvā having left, gaganam to the sky, āsthitāḥ occupied.

Then the kinnaras, uragas, gandhravas, yakshas and vidyadharas left the tortured mountain and occupied the sky.
sa ca bhūmidharaḥ śrīmānbalinā tēna pīḍitaḥ৷৷5.56.32৷৷

savṛkṣaśikharōdagraḥ pravivēśa rasātalam.


balinā by the powerful one, tēna by him, pīḍitaḥ crushed, savṛkṣaśikharōdagraḥ along with its trees and standing tall peaks, śrīmān prosperous, saḥ bhūmidharaśca that mountain, rasātalam underworld, pravivēśa entered.

Crushed by the powerful Hanuman, that prosperous mountain with its trees standing and tall peaks sank into the underworld.
daśayōjanavistārastriṅśadyōjanamucchritaḥ৷৷5.56.33৷৷

dharaṇyāṅ samatāṅ yātaḥ sa babhūva dharādharaḥ.


daśayōjanavistāraḥ ten yojanas in width, triṅśadyōjanam thirty yojanas, ucchritaḥ in height, saḥ dharādharaḥ that mountain, dharaṇyām along with, samatām equal, yātaḥ reduced, babhūva became.

That mountain of ten yojanas in width and thirty yojanas in height got levelled with the earth.
sa lilaṅghayiṣurbhīmaṅ salīlaṅ lavaṇārṇavam৷৷5.56.34৷৷

kallōlāsphālavēlāntamutpapāta nabhō hariḥ.


saḥ hariḥ that vanara, bhīmam terrific, kallōlāsphālavēlāntam with huge waves dashing towards the shore, lavaṇārṇavam ocean of salt-water, salīlam easily, lilaṅghayiṣuḥ desiring to cross, nabhaḥ sky, utpapāta leaped.

Eager to leap the terrific ocean lashed by huge waves hitting the shore Hanuman rose up effortlessly and jumped into the sky.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē ṣaṭpañcāśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftysixth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
