[Hanuman narrates all the incidents starting from his departure for Lanka till his return.]

tatastasya girēḥ śṛṅgē mahēndrasya mahābalāḥ.

hanumatpramukhāḥ prītiṅ harayō jagmuruttamām৷৷5.58.1৷৷


tataḥ then, mahābalāḥ mighty, hanumatpramukhāḥ Hanuman the foremost, harayaḥ among vanaras, tasya that, mahēndrasyagirēḥ on the mountain Mahendra, śṛṅgē summit, uttamām very much, prītim rejoiced, jagmuḥ went.

Then the mighty Hanuman and other vanaras having assembled on the summit of mountain Mahendra and felt vey much happy.
taṅ tataḥ prītisaṅhṛṣṭaḥ prītimantaṅ mahākapim.

jāmbavānkāryavṛttāntamapṛcchadanilātmajam৷৷5.58.2৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, prītisaṅhṛṣṭaḥ very delighted, jāmbavān Jambavan, prītimantam very affectionately, mahākapim great monkey, anilātmajam Hanuman, kāryavṛttāntam all that happened, apṛcchat inquired.

Thereafter, very delighted Jambavan inquired Hanuman most affectionately of all that happened.
kathaṅ dṛṣṭā tvayā dēvī kathaṅ vā tatra vartatē.

tasyāṅ vā sa kathaṅvṛttaḥ krūrakarmā daśānanaḥ৷৷5.58.3৷৷


dēvī divine lady, tvayā by you, katham how, dṛṣṭā was she found, tatra there, kathaṅ vā how is she, vartatē behaving, krūrakarmā cruel in action, saḥ daśānanaḥ that ten-headed one, tasyām with her, kathaṅvṛttaḥ you narrate (what she said).

"How did you find the god-like lady? How was she? How was the ten-headed one, cruel in action, behaving with her? You may narrate what she said.
tattvatassarvamētannaḥ prabrūhi tvaṅ mahākapē.

śrutārthāścintayiṣyāmō bhūyaḥ kāryaviniścayam৷৷5.58.4৷৷


mahākapē great vanara, ētat all that, sarvam entire, tattvataḥ truly, tvam you, naḥ us, prabrūhi after knowing, śrutārthāḥ after hearing, bhūyaḥkāryaviniścayam next course of action, cintayiṣyāmaḥ will think .

"O Hanuman, tell us in detail the entire thing. On hearing it, we will think about the next course of action.
yaścārthastattra vaktavyō gatairasmābhirātmavān.

rakṣitavyaṅ ca yattatra tadbhavānvyākarōtu naḥ৷৷5.58.5৷৷


gataiḥ when we go, asmābhiḥ we too, tatra there, yaḥ that which, arthaḥ meaningful, vaktavyaḥ will tell, yat that which, tatra there, rakṣitavyaṅ ca to be hidden, tat that, ātmavān yourself, bhavān you are wise, naḥ to us, vyākarōtu tell us in detail.

"You are wise and you should tell us in detail what is to be told and what has to be hidden when we report."
sa niyuktastatastēna samprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ.

praṇamya śirasā dēvyai sītāyai pratyabhāṣata৷৷5.58.6৷৷


tēna by him, niyuktaḥ having been asked, saḥ he, samprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ horripilations all over his body out of joy, tataḥ then, dēvyai to queen, sītāyai to Sita, śirasā bowed down head, praṇamya saluted, pratyabhāṣata began telling.

Having been asked (by Jambavan and others) Hanuman with horripilations all over his
body, bowed down and saluted in the direction of queen Sita and began:
pratyakṣamēva bhavatāṅ mahēndrāgrātkhāmāplutaḥ.

udadhērdakṣiṇaṅ pāraṅ kāṅkṣamāṇa ssamāhitaḥ৷৷5.58.7৷৷


udadhēḥ rose up, dakṣiṇam southern, pāram shore, kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ you have seen, samāhitaḥ intent on, bhavatām all of you, pratyakṣamēva directly, mahēndrāgrāt Mahendra mountain, kham sky, āplutaḥ leaping.

"I rose upwards leaping into the sky, intent on reaching the southern shore from the mountain Mahendra.It has been witnessed directly by all of you.
gacchataśca hi mē ghōraṅ vighnarūpamivābhavat.

kāñcanaṅ śikharaṅ divyaṅ paśyāmi sumanōharam৷৷5.58.8৷৷


gacchataḥ while I was going, mē I, ghōram terrific, vighnarūpamiva like a form that came to obstruct, abhavat saw, kāñcanam golden, divyam wonderful, sumanōharam very beautiful, śikharam peak of mountain, paśyāmi saw.

"Even as I was leaping I saw a terrific and wonderful golden peak which came as if to obstruct me on my path.
sthitaṅ pandhānamāvṛtya mēnē vighnaṅ ca taṅ nagam.

upasaṅgamya taṅ divyaṅ kāñcanaṅ nagasattamam৷৷5.58.9৷৷

kṛtā mē manasā buddhirbhēttavyō.yaṅ mayēti ca.


panthānam on my way, āvṛtya turning towards, sthitam stood, taṅ nagam that mountain, vighnam to obstruct, mēnē my path, divyam wonderful, kāñcanam golden, taṅ nagasattamam that great mountain, upasaṅgamya meeting, ayam this, mayā by me, bhēttavyaḥ iti this should be broken, mē manasā in my mind, buddhiḥ kṛtā resolved.

"The mountain stood on my way turning towards me in order to obstruct me. Then I resolved in my mind that this great, wonderful, golden mountain has to be smashed.
prahataṅ ca mayā tasya lāṅgūlēna mahāgirēḥ৷৷5.58.10৷৷

śikharaṅ sūryasaṅkāśaṅ vyaśīryata sahasradhā.


mayā by me, lāṅgūlēna with my tail, prahatam hit, tasya mahāgirēḥ that great mountain, sūryasaṅkāśam radiating like the Sun, śikharam peak, sahasradhā a thousand pieces, vyaśīryata shattered.

"Hit by my tail the great mountain peak, which was radiating like the Sun was shattered into a thousand pieces.
vyavasāyaṅ ca taṅ buddhvā sa hōvāca mahāgiriḥ৷৷5.58.11.

puttrēti madhurāṅ vāṇīṅ manaḥ prahlādayanniva.


saḥ mahāgiriḥ that great mountain, tam him, vyavasāyam going to smash, buddhvā perceiving, manaḥ my mind, prahlādayanniva delighting, puttra iti like a son, madhurām sweet, vāṇīm tone, uvāca ha spoke.

"Perceiving that I am going to smash him he spoke to me in a sweet tone delighting my heart, addressing me like a son.
pitṛvyaṅ cāpi māṅ viddhi sakhāyaṅ mātariśvanaḥ৷৷5.58.12৷৷

mainākamiti vikhyātaṅ nivasantaṅ mahōdadhau.


mahōdadhau in the great ocean, nivasantam residing, mātariśvanaḥ wind-deity, sakhāyam friend, vikhyātam called, mām I, mainākamiti Mainaka, pitṛvyaṅ cāpi like father's brother, viddhi you may know.

'Know me to be a friend of wind-god and so I am like your father's brother. I am dwelling in this great ocean and known as Mainaka.
pakṣavantaḥ purā puttra babhūvuḥ parvatōttamāḥ৷৷5.58.13৷৷

chandataḥ pṛthivīṅ cērurbādhamānāḥ samantataḥ.


puttra O son!, purā in the past, parvatōttamāḥ the foremost of mountains, pakṣavantaḥ had wings, babhūvuḥ had, bādhamānāḥ tormenting, chandataḥ at will, samantataḥ all over, pṛthivīm the earth, cēruḥ ranging.

'O son! in the past, foremost of the mountains too had wings and they used to range at will all over the earth tormenting all.
śrutvā nagānāṅ caritaṅ mahēndraḥ pākaśāsanaḥ৷৷5.58.14৷৷

cicchēda bhagavān pakṣānvajrēṇaiṣāṅ sahasraśaḥ.


pākaśāsanaḥ who killed Paka (an ogre), bhagavān god, mahēndraḥ Mahendra, nagānām of the mountains, caritam the story (of their cruel deeds), śrutvā on hearing, ēṣām their, pakṣān wings, vajrēṇa by the thuinderbolt, sahasraśaḥ into a thousand pieces, cicchēda cut off.

'Mahendra, the killer of ogre Paka, heard the story (of the cruel deeds) of mountains and cut off their wings into a thousand pieces with his thunderbolt.
ahaṅ tu mōkṣitastasmāttava pitrā mahātmanā৷৷5.58.15৷৷

mārutēna tadā vatsa prakṣiptō.smi mahārṇavē.


vatsa O Son!, ahaṅ tu I was also, tava your, pitrā father, mahātmanā great self, mārutēna of Maruta's, tadā so also, tasmāt your, mōkṣitaḥ dropped, mahārṇavē in this great ocean, prakṣiptaḥ saved from Indra, asmi I am.

'O son! I was saved from Indra by your kind father Maruta who dropped me in this great ocean.
rāmasya ca mayā sāhyē vartitavyamarindama৷৷5.58.16৷৷

rāmō dharmabhṛtāṅ śrēṣṭhō mahēndrasamavikramaḥ.


arindama subduer of enemies, mayā by me, rāmasya Rama's, sāhyē received help, vartitavyam has to make efforts, mahēndrasamavikramaḥ equal to Mahendra in valour, rāmaḥ Rama, dharmabhṛtām among the righteous, śrēṣṭhaḥ foremost.

'O subduer of enemies!I must make efforts to help Rama the foremost among the righteous, for I have received help (from your father) who is equal to Indra in valour'.
ētacchrutvā vacastasya mainākasya mahātmanaḥ৷৷5.58.17৷৷

kāryamāvēdya tu girērudyataṅ ca manō mama.

tēna cāhamanujñātō mainākēna mahātmanā৷৷5.58.18৷৷


mahātmanaḥ great self, tasya mainākasya that Mainaka's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā having heard, kāryam task, girēḥ mountain, āvēdya told, mama my, manaḥ mind, udyatam to go, aham I, tēna to him, mahātmanā the great self, mainākēna by Mainaka, anujñātaśca granted permission.

"When I heard Mainaka, I told him about my intention to go up. That great self Mainaka allowed me.
sa cāpyantarhitaḥ śailō mānuṣēṇa vapuṣmatā.

śarīrēṇa mahāśailaḥ śailēna ca mahōdadhau৷৷5.58.19৷৷


saḥ he, śailaḥ mountain, mānuṣēṇa in human form, vapuṣmatā antarhitaḥ concealed, mahāśailaḥ huge mountain, śailēna in mountain form, śarīrēṇa ca in the form, mahōdadhau great ocean, antarhitaḥ remained hidden.

"Then the huge mountain in human form concealed as huge mountains remain hidden in the ocean.
uttamaṅ javamāsthāya śēṣaṅ panthānamāsthitaḥ.

tatō.haṅ suciraṅ kālaṅ vēgēnābhyāgamaṅ pathi৷৷5.58.20৷৷


tataḥ then, aham I, uttamam excellent, javam speed, āsthāya catching, śēṣam rest of, panthānam the path, āsthitaḥ to cross, suciraṅ kālam long time, vēgēna speedily, abhyāgamam went on.

"Then with great speed I proceeded on my path. It took a long time to cross the ocean.
tataḥ paśyāmyahaṅ dēvīṅ surasāṅ nāgamātaram.

samudramadhyē sā dēvī vacanaṅ māmabhāṣata৷৷5.58.21৷৷


tataḥ then, aham I, nāgamātaram mother of serpents, surasām Surasa, paśyāmi saw, sā dēvī that lady, samudramadhyē in the midst of the ocean, mām me, vacanam these words, abhāṣata said.

"I saw Surasa, the mother of serpents in the midst of the ocean and she said:
mama bhakṣaḥ pradiṣṭastvamamarairharisattama.

atastvāṅ bhakṣayiṣyāmi vihitastvaṅ cirasya mē৷৷5.58.22৷৷


harisattama powerful monkey, tvam you, mama my, bhakṣaḥ food, amaraiḥ immortals,pradiṣṭaḥ destined, ataḥ as such, tvām you, bhakṣayiṣyāmi I will eat you, tvam you, mē my, cirasya after a long time, vihitaḥ found you.

'O powerful monkey! you are destined to be my food provided by the immortals. Therefore, I will eat you as I have I found you after a long time. (of unsatiated hunger).'
ēvamukta ssurasayā prāñjaliḥ praṇataḥ sthitaḥ.

vivarṇavadanō bhūtvā vākyaṅ cēdamudīrayam৷৷5.58.23৷৷


surasayā by Surasa, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having spoken, prāñjaliḥ offered salutations
with folded palms, praṇataḥ bent low, sthitaḥ stood, vivarṇavadanaḥ face turned pale, bhūtvā became, idam these, vākyaṅ ca and words, udīrayam uttered.

"When addressed thus by Surasa, I bowed low with joined palms, stood before her with my face turned pale, and said:
rāmō dāśarathiḥ śrīmān praviṣṭō daṇḍakāvanam.

lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā sītayā ca parantapaḥ৷৷5.58.24৷৷


dāśarathiḥ Dasaratha's son, śrīmān illustrious, parantapaḥ scorcher of enemies, rāmaḥ Rama, daṇḍakāvanam Dandaka forest, bhrātrā brother, lakṣmaṇēna saha accompanied by Lakshmana, sītayā ca and Sita, praviṣṭaḥ entered.

'Dasaratha's son, the illustrious Rama, a scorcher of enemies, accompanied by his brother Lakshmana and wife Sita entered Dandaka forest.
tasya sītā hṛtā bhāryā rāvaṇēna durātmanā.

tasyā ssaṅkāśaṅ dūtō.haṅ gamiṣyē rāmaśāsanāt৷৷5.58.25৷৷


tasya his, bhāryā wife, sītā Sita, durātmanā evil minded, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, hṛtā abducted, aham I, rāmaśāsanāt by Rama's command, dūtaḥ messenger, tasyāḥ her, saṅkāśam to meet, gamiṣyē going.

'His wife was abducted by the evil-minded Ravana. By Rama's command I am going to meet her as messenger from Rama.'
kartumarhasi rāmasya sāhāyyaṅ viṣayē satī.

athavā maithilīṅ dṛṣṭvā rāmaṅ cākliṣṭakāriṇam৷৷5.58.26৷৷

āgamiṣyāmi tē vaktraṅ satyaṅ pratiśṛṇōmi tē.


viṣayē king's wife, satī wife, rāmasya Rama's, sāhāyyam help, kartum will do, arhasi fit, athavā or
else, maithilīm when Mythili, akliṣṭakāriṇam after revealing about her, rāmaṅ ca and Rama, dṛṣṭvā seeing, tē to you, vaktram mouth, āgamiṣyāmi will enter, satyam it is true, tē you, pratiśṛṇōmi promise.

"I told her that it is proper for her (living in the domain of Rama) to help his queen and wife. Or else, I promised after I disclose to Rama, Sita's whereabouts, I will come and enter her mouth.
ēvamuktā mayā sā tu surasā kāmarūpiṇī.5.58.27৷৷

abravīnnātivartēta kaścidēṣa varō mama.


mayā by me, ēvam in that way, uktā having said, kāmarūpiṇī who can assume any form at will, sā surasā that Surasa, abravīt said, kaścit none, nātivartēta can escape, ēṣaḥ thus, mama I have, varaḥ a boon.

ēvamuktassurasayā daśayōjanamāyataḥ৷৷5.58.28৷৷

tatōrthaguṇavistārō babhūvāhaṅ kṣaṇēna tu.


surasayā when Surasa, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ spoke, daśayōjanam ten yojanas, āyataḥ in length, aham I, tataḥ then, kṣaṇēna in a moment, arthaguṇavistāraḥ fifteen yojanas, babhūva grew in size.

"When Surasa said this I who was ten yojanas in height increased by fifteen yojanas.
matpramāṇānurūpaṅ ca vyāditaṅ ca mukhaṅ tayā৷৷5.58.29৷৷

taddṛṣṭvā vyāditaṅ cāsyaṅ hrasvaṅ hyakaravaṅ vapuḥ.

tasminmuhūrtē ca punarbabhūvāṅguṣṭhamātrakaḥ৷৷5.58.30৷৷


tayā to go, mukham mouth, matpramāṇānurūpam commensurate with my size, vyāditam opened, vyāditam when she opened, tat that, āsyam her, dṛṣṭvā seeing, vapuḥ form, hrasvam turned away, ākaravam to move, tasmin from her, muhūrtē in a moment, punaḥ again, aṅguṣṭhamātrakaḥ of the size of thumb, babhūva became.

"She too opened her mouth wide enough for my size. Seeing her distending her mouth, in a moment I became small equal to the size of thumb and came out.
abhipatyāśu tadvaktraṅ nirgatō.haṅ tataḥ kṣaṇāt.

abravītsurasā dēvī svēna rūpēṇa māṅ punaḥ৷৷5.58.31৷৷


tataḥ then, aham I, āśu she, tadvaktram her mouth, abhipatya seeing, kṣaṇāt in a moment, nirgataḥ came out, dēvī lady, surasā Surasa, svēna natural, rūpēṇa form assumed, punaḥ again, mām to me, abravīt said.

"Then Surasa assumed her natural form again in a moment and said this to me:
arthasiddhyai hariśrēṣṭha gaccha saumya yathāsukham.

samānaya ca vaidēhīṅ rāghavēṇa mahātmanā৷৷5.58.32৷৷

sukhī bhava mahābāhō prītā.smi tava vānara.


saumya O noble one!, hariśrēṣṭha foremost of vanaras, arthasiddhyai accomplish the task, yathāsukham happily, gaccha going, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, mahātmanā great self, rāghavēṇa to Raghava, samānaya unite, mahābāhō strong-armed, vānara vanara, sukhī be happy, bhava you, tava you, prītā pleased, asmi I am.

'O noble vanara! O foremost of the vanaras! go and accomplish the task.Unite the great Rama with Vaidehi.O strong-armed vanara, be happy. I am pleased with you'.
tatō.haṅ sādhu sādhviti sarvabhūtaiḥ praśaṅsitaḥ৷৷5.58.33৷৷

tatō.ntarikṣaṅ vipulaṅ plutō.haṅ garuḍō yathā.


tataḥ then, aham I, sarvabhūtaiḥ all creatures, sādhu sādhviti well done, well done, praśaṅsitaḥ praised, tataḥ then, aham I, garuḍō yathā like Garuda, vipulam vast, antarikṣam sky, plutaḥ leapt .

"Then all creatures praised me saying 'well done well done'. Then I leaped into the vast sky like Garuda.
chāyā mē nigṛhītā ca na ca paśyāmi kiṅcana৷৷5.58.34৷৷

sō.haṅ vihatavēgastu diśō daśa vilōkayan.

na kiñcittatra paśyāmi yēna mē.pahṛtā gatiḥ৷৷5.58.35৷৷


mē my, chāyā shadow, nigṛhītā held, kiñcana by some one, na ca paśyāmi I could not see, vihatavēgaḥ reduced my speed, saḥ aham I, daśa diśaḥ all the ten directions, vilōkayan looked around, yēna even then, mē to me, gatiḥ one that approached, apahṛtā that which seized, kiñcit not seen, tatra na ca paśyāmi was not seen.

"Then I was captured by a shadow of some one. I could not see and I reduced my speed and looked around in all the ten directions. I could not see the one who seized me.
tatō mē buddhirutpannā kinnāma gaganē mama.

īdṛśō vighna utpannō rūpaṅ yatra na dṛśyatē৷৷5.58.36৷৷


tataḥ then, mē my, buddhiḥ intellect, utpannā arose, mama in me, gaganē in the sky, yatra there, rūpam form, na dṛśyatē not able to see, kiṅ nāma what is her name, īdṛśaḥ not able to discern, vighnaḥ obstructing, utpannaḥ thought.

adhōbhāgēna mē dṛṣṭi śśōcatā pātitā mayā.

tatō.drākṣamahaṅ bhīmāṅ rākṣasīṅ salilēśayām৷৷5.58.37৷৷


śōcatā thinking so, mayā by me, adhōbhāgēna down, mē I, dṛṣṭiḥ saw, pātitā down, tataḥ there, aham I, bhīmām terrific, salilēśayām in the water, rākṣasīm she-demon, adrākṣam I saw.

"Thinking so I looked down into the water and there I saw a terrific she-demon.
prahasya ca mahānādamuktō.haṅ bhīmayā tayā.

avasthitamasambhrāntamidaṅ vākyamaśōbhanam৷৷5.58.38৷৷


bhīmayā frightening, tayā she was, mahānādam loud voice, prahasya laughed, avasthitam without any hesitation, asambhrāntam steadfast, idam this, aśōbhanam inauspicious, vākyam these words, aham to me, uktaḥ said.

"She was frightening and laughed in loud voice without any hesitation. Steadfast she uttered these ominous words to me:
kvāsi gantā mahākāya kṣudhitāyā mamēpsitaḥ.

bhakṣaḥ prīṇaya mē dēhaṅ ciramāhāravarjitam৷৷5.58.39৷৷


mahākāya one with a huge body, kva where, gantā going, asi you are, kṣudhitāyāḥ I am hungry, mama my, īpsitaḥ I am eager, bhakṣaḥ to eat, ciram for long time, āhāravarjitam without food, mē my, dēham body, prīṇaya make me satisfied.

'O huge monkey! where are you going? I am hungry since long. I am going without food and must eat you. Make me satisfied'.
bāḍhamityēva tāṅ vāṇīṅ pratyagṛhṇāmahaṅ tataḥ.

asyapramāṇādadhikaṅ tasyāḥ kāyamapūrayam৷৷5.58.40৷৷


aham I am, bāḍham ityēva saying well, tāṅ vāṇīm her mouth, pratyagṛhṇām tataḥ then, tasyāḥ her, asyapramāṇāt more than her size, adhikam bigger, kāyam size body, apūrayam grew.

"I said 'well' and enlarged my body more than her mouth could hold.
tasyāścāsyaṅ mahadbhīmaṅ vardhatē mama bhakṣaṇē.

na ca māṅ sādhu bubudhē mama vā vikṛtaṅ kṛtam৷৷5.58.41৷৷


tasyāḥ her, mahat huge, bhīmam fierce, āsyaṅ ca mouth, mama bhakṣaṇē to eat me, vardhatē increased, mām myself, kṛtam did, mama my, vikṛtam ugly, sādhu on my own, na bubudhē not know.

"She opened her huge mouth to eat me as she did not know that I had already assumed a huge ugly form on my own.
tatō.haṅ vipulaṅ rūpaṅ saṅkṣipya nimiṣāntarāt.

tasyā hṛdayamādāya prapatāmi nabha:sthalam৷৷5.58.42৷৷


tataḥ then, aham I, nimiṣāntarāt in a moment, vipulam vast, rūpam form, saṅkṣipya reduced, tasyāḥ from her, hṛdayam heart, ādāya entered, nabhasthalam into the sky, prapatāmi sprang up.

"In a moment I reduced from a huge form to a small one, entered her heart and sprang into the sky.
sā visṛṣṭabhujā bhīmā papāta lavaṇāmbhasi.

mayā parvatasaṅkāśā nikṛttahṛdayā satī৷৷5.58.43৷৷


bhīmā fierce, parvatasaṅkāśā resembling mountain, sā she, mayā my, nikṛttahṛdayā pulled out her heart, satī she, visṛṣṭabhujā hanging down her arms, lavaṇāmbhasi into the ocean, papāta fell.

"She who resembled a mountain fell into the ocean with her arms hanging down when I pulled out her heart.
śṛṇōmi khagatānāṅ ca siddhānāṅ cāraṇaissaha.

rākṣasī siṅhikā bhīmā kṣipraṅ hanumatā hatā৷৷5.58.44৷৷


cāraṇaiḥ saha including charanas, khagatānām residing in the sky, siddhānām siddhas, bhīmā fierce, rākṣasī ogres siṅhikā Simhika, kṣipram in a moment, hanumatā by Hanuman, hatā slain, śṛṇōmi (talking to each other) I heard.

"I heard the charanas and siddhas residing in the sky talking to each other that the fierce ogres Simhika has been killed by Hanuman in a moment.
tāṅ hatvā punarēvāhaṅ kṛtyamātyayikaṅ smaran.

gatvā cāha mahadhvānaṅ paśyāmi nagamaṇḍitam৷৷5.58.45৷৷

dakṣiṇaṅ tīramudadhērlaṅkā yatra ca sā purī.


aham I, tām her, hatvā having slain, punarēva once again, atyayikam huge, kṛtyam feat, smaran remembered, mahat adhvānam huge mission, gatvā went, yatra there, sā that, laṅkāpurī city of Lanka, udadhēḥ full of trees, dakṣiṇaṅ tīram southern shore, paśyāmi saw.

"Having slained Simhika, I thought of the huge feat that I have done. I remembered the big mission before me and went to the southern shore of the ocean and saw Lanka full of trees.
astaṅ dinakarē yātē rakṣasāṅ nilayaṅ puram৷৷5.58.46৷৷

praviṣṭō.hamavijñātō rakṣōbhirbhīmavikramaiḥ.


dinakarē Sun, astaṅ yātē after setting, aham I, bhīmavikramaiḥ of fierce valour, rakṣōbhiḥ guarded, avijñātaḥ unnoticed, rakṣasām demons, nilayam abode, puram city, praviṣṭaḥ entered.

tatra praviśataścāpi kalpāntaghanasannibhā৷৷5.58.47৷৷

aṭṭahāsaṅ vimuñcantī nārī kāpyutthitā puraḥ.


tatra there, praviśataḥ as I entered, puraḥ the city, kalpāntaghanasannibhā like a cloud at the dissolution of the universe, kāpi behaving like, nārī woman, aṭṭahāsam yelling, vimuñcantī stood in front, utthitā opposing me.

jighāṅsantīṅ tatastāṅ tu jvaladagniśirōruhām৷৷5.58.48৷৷

savyamuṣṭiprahārēṇa parājitya subhairavām.

pradōṣakālē praviśaṅ bhītayā.haṅ tayōditaḥ৷৷5.58.49৷৷


tataḥ then, jighāṅsantīm burning, jvaladagniśirōruhām hair like the sacrificial fire, subhairavām frightening form, tām her, savyamuṣṭiprahārēṇa hit with the fist of the left hand, parājitya after defeating, pradōṣakālē at the sun-set time, praviśam entered, bhītayā fearful form, tayā she, aham me, uditaḥ risen.

"Then the frightening form, with its hair burning like sacrificial fire, emerged to kill me. I defeated her hittting with my left fist and entered the city at sun-set time.
ahaṅ laṅkāpurī vīra nirjitā vikramēṇa tē.

yasmāttasmādvijētāsi sarvarakṣāṅsyaśēṣataḥ৷৷5.58.50৷৷


vīra hero, aham I, laṅkāpurī the deity of Lanka, yasmāt I am, tē by your, vikramaṇē by your valour, nirjitā won, tasmāt therefore, sarvarakṣāṅsi all demons, aśēṣataḥ many, vijētāsi will win.

'O hero! I am the presiding deity of Lanka whom you have won by your valour. Therefore you will win many demons she foretold.
tatrāhaṅ sarvarātraṅ tu vicinvan janakātmajām.

rāvaṇāntaḥpuragatō na cāpaśyaṅ sumadhyamām৷৷5.58.51৷৷


aham I am, tatra there, rāvaṇāntaḥpuragataḥ Ravana's harem, sarvarātram all night, janakātmajām Janaka's daughter, vicinvan searched also, sumadhyamām fair-waisted lady, na apaśyaṅ ca and not seen.

"There when I went to the harem of Ravana and searched all night, I did not find the fair-waisted Janaka's daughter.
tata ssītāmapaśyaṅstu rāvaṇasya nivēśanē.

śōkasāgaramāsādya na pāramupalakṣayē৷৷5.58.52৷৷


rāvaṇasya Ravana's, nivēśanē residence, sītām Sita, apaśyaṅstu not able to find, tataḥ then, śōkasāgaram ocean of sorrow, āsādya immersed, pāram endless, na upalakṣayē did not know.

"Not able to find Sita at the residence of Ravana I was immersed in an ocean of endless sorrow and did not know what to do.
śōcatā ca mayā dṛṣṭaṅ prākārēṇa samāvṛtam.

kāñcanēna vikṛṣṭēna gṛhōpavanamuttamam৷৷5.58.53৷৷


śōcatā worrying so, mayā by me, kāñcanēna golden, vikṛṣṭēna long, prākārēṇa boundary wall, samāvṛtam surrounding, uttamam very splendid, gṛhōpavanam home garden, dṛṣṭam seen.

"While worrying like that I saw a long golden boundary wall surrounding a splendid home garden. (upabana)
sa prākāramavaplutya paśyāmi bahupādapam.

aśōkavanikāmadhyē śiṅśupāpādapō mahān৷৷5.58.54৷৷

tamāruhya ca paśyāmi kāñcanaṅ kadalīvanam.


saḥ that, prākāram boundary wall, avaplutya crossed, bahupādapam many kinds of trees, paśyāmi saw, aśōkavanikāmadhyē in the midst of Ashoka garden, mahān huge, śiṅśupāpādapaḥ Simsupa tree, tam that, āruhya ascended, kāñcanam golden, kadalīvanam rows of banana plants, paśyāmi saw.

"I crossed that boundary wall and saw many kinds of trees and in the midst of that Ashoka garden, a huge Simsupa tree. I ascended it and saw rows of banana plants.
adūrē śiṅśupāvṛkṣātpaśyāmi varavarṇinīm৷৷5.58.55৷৷

śyāmāṅ kamalapatrākṣīmupavāsakṛśānanām.

tadēkavāsassaṅvītāṅ rajōdhvastaśirōruhām৷৷5.58.56৷৷

śōkasantāpadīnāṅgīṅ sītāṅ bhartṛhitē sthitām.

rākṣasībhirvirūpābhiḥ krūrābhirabhisaṅvṛtām৷৷5.58.57৷৷

māṅsaśōṇitabhakṣābhirvyāghrībhirhariṇīmiva.


śiṅśupāvṛkṣāt from the Simsupa tree, adūrāt not far from there, varavarṇinīm beautiful, śyāmām dark complexioned, kamalapatrākṣīm with eyes like lotus petals, upavāsakṛśānanām whose face was emaciated due to fasting, tadēkavāsaḥsaṅvītām wearing only a single sari, rajōdhvastaśirōruhām hair filled with dust, śōkasantāpadīnāṅgīm pathetic-looking in grief, bhartṛhitē well wisher of husband, sthitām seated, virūpābhiḥ ugly, krūrābhiḥ cruel also, māṅsaśōṇitabhakṣābhiḥ who were fed with flesh and blood, rākṣasībhiḥ she-demons, vyāghrībhiḥ tigress, hariṇīmiva like a doe, abhisaṅvṛtām collected around, sītām Sita, paśyāmi I saw.

"Not far from the Simsupa tree I saw beautiful Sita, of dark complexion, with eyes like lotus petals, whose face was emaciated due to fasting, wearing only a single sari (the same one since her abduction) her locks filled with dust, pathetic looking, immersed in sorrow, meditating on her husband seated like a doe encircled by tigresses, surrounded by ugly and cruel she-demons fed on flesh and blood.
sā mayā rākṣasīmadhyē tarjyamānā muhurmuhuḥ৷৷5.58.58৷৷

ēkavēṇīdharā dīnā bhartṛcintāparāyaṇā.

bhūmiśayyā vivarṇāṅgī padminīva himāgamē৷৷5.58.59৷৷

rāvaṇādvinivṛttārthā martavyakṛtaniścayā.

kathañcinmṛgaśābākṣī tūrṇamāsāditā mayā৷৷5.58.60৷৷


muhurmuhuḥ again and again, tarjyamānā intimidated, ēkavēṇīdharā wearing a single braid, dīnā miserable, bhartṛcintāparāyaṇā engrossed in sorrow about her husband, bhūmiśayyā on account of lying on the bare ground, vivarṇāṅgī become pale, himāgamē at the onset of winter, padminīva like the lotuses, rāvaṇāt by Ravana, vinivṛttārthām not knowing the way to escape, rtavyakṛntiścayā determined to give up life, sā she, mayā by me, rākṣasīmadhyē in the midst of demonesses, āsāditā seated, mṛgaśābākṣī fawn-eyed, mayā by me, kathañcit some how, tūrṇam quickly, āsāditā saw.

tāṅ dṛṣṭvā tādṛśīṅ nārīṅ rāmapatnīṅ yaśasvinīm.

tatraiva śiṅśupāvṛkṣē paśyannahamavasthitaḥ৷৷5.58.61৷৷


aham I am, tādṛśīm seeing her, nārīm woman, yaśasvinīm renowned one, tāṅ rāmapatnīm that Rama's wife, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, tatra there, śiṅśupāvṛkṣē ēva from the Simsupa tree only, paśyan saw, avasthitaḥ stayed.

"I remained there looking on that renowned wife of Rama from the Simsupa tree.
tatō halahalāśabdaṅ kāñcīnūpuramiśritam.

śṛṇōmyadhikagambhīraṅ rāvaṇasya nivēśanē৷৷5.58.62৷৷


tataḥ then, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, nivēśanē residence, kāñcīnūpuramiśritam sound of jingling bells of gold, adhikagambhīram very majestic, halahalāśabdam making a loud noise, śṛṇōmi I heard.

"Then I heard a deep sound mixed with jingling golden girdles and anklets coming from Ravana's residence.
tatō.haṅ paramōdvignaḥ svaṅ rūpaṅ pratyasaṅharam.

ahaṅ tu śiṅśupāvṛkṣē pakṣīva gahanē sthitaḥ৷৷5.58.63৷৷


tataḥ then, aham I, paramōdvignaḥ very scared, svaṅ rūpam my form, pratyasaṅharam contracted my body, ahaṅ tu I also, gahanē sky, śiṅśupāvṛkṣē in the Simsupa tree, pakṣīva like a bird, sthitaḥ stood.

"I was scared and contracted my body size and stood on the Simsupa tree like a bird in the sky.
tatō rāvaṇadārāśca rāvaṇaśca mahābalaḥ.

taṅ dēśaṅ samanuprāptā yatra sītā.bhavat sthitā৷৷5.58.64৷৷


tataḥ then, rāvaṇadārāśca Ravana's consorts, mahābalaḥ powerful, rāvaṇaśca Ravana's, sītā Sita, yatra there, sthitā stood, abhavat came, tam to her, dēśam location, samanuprāptāḥ reached.

"Then arrived the powerful Ravana with his consorts to that place where Sita was and stood there.
taṅ dṛṣṭvātha varārōhā sītā rakṣōgaṇēśvaram.

saṅkucyōrūstanau pīnau bāhubhyāṅ parirabhya ca৷৷5.58.65৷৷


atha and then, varārōhā beautiful one, sītā Sita, rakṣōgaṇēśvaram king of demon troops, tam her, dṛṣṭvā seeing, ūrū thighs, bāhubhyām shoulders, saṅkucya folded across, pīnau plumpy,
stanau breasts, parirabhya ca covered.

"On seeing Ravana, the king of demons, beautiful Sita, full of fear hid her face and plump breasts between her thighs.
vitrastāṅ paramōdvignāṅ vīkṣamāṇāṅ tatastataḥ.

trāṇaṅ kiñcidapaśyantīṅ vēpamānāṅ tapasvinīm৷৷5.58.66৷৷

tāmuvāca daśagrīvassītāṅ paramaduḥkhitām.

avākcirāḥ prapatitō bahumanyasva māmiti৷৷5.58.67৷৷


vitrastām full of fear, paramōdvignām very much worried, tatastataḥ here and there, vīkṣamāṇām looking, kiñcit not even one, trāṇam protector, apaśyantīm not seen, vēpamānām trembling, tapasvinīm one in meditation, paramaduḥkhitām very sorrowful, tāṅ sītām that Sita, daśagrīvaḥ ten-headed, avākcirāḥ bending the head down, pratitaḥ trust, mām me, bahumanyasva respect, iti this, uvāca spoke.

"Sita was full of fear and worry, looked here and there without any protector to pacify. She was trembling in fear. To that Sita, the ten-headed Ravana bent his head down and said, 'trust me and respect me'.
yadi cēttvaṅ tu darpānmāṅ nābhinandasi garvitē.

dvau māsāvantaraṅ sītē pāsyāmi rudhiraṅ tava৷৷5.58.68৷৷


garvitē in your pride, sītē Sita, tvam your, darpāt with pride, mām me, nābhinandasi yadi cēt if you do not respect me, dvau māsau antaram in two months time, tava your, rudhiram blood, pāsyāmi I will see.

'O Sita! if in your pride, you do not respect me, I will see (drink) your blood in two months.
ētacchrutvā vacastasya rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ.

uvāca paramakruddhā sītā vacanamuttamam৷৷5.58.69৷৷


durātmanaḥ evil-minded one, tasya your, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, ētat all these, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, sītā Sita, paramakruddhā very angry, uttamam good, vacanam these words, uvāca spoke.

"Hearing the words of evil-minded Ravana, Sita became very angry and spoke these approprate words:
rākṣasādhama rāmasya bhāryāmamitatējasaḥ.

ikṣvākukulanāthasya snuṣāṅ daśarathasya ca৷৷5.58.70৷৷

avācyaṅ vadatō jihvā kathaṅ na patitā tava.


rākṣasādhama lowly rakshasa, amitatējasaḥ highly valourous one, rāmasya Rama's, bhāryām wife, ikṣvākukulanāthasya of the king of Ikshvaku race, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, snuṣāṅ ca daughter-in-law, avācyam unspeakable, vadataḥ words, tava your, jihvā tongue, katham how, na patitā not fallen.

'O lowly demon! I am the wife of valiant Rama and daughter-in-law of Dasaratha, the king of Ikshvaku race. How is it your tongue that spoke unspeakable words has not fallen down?
kiñcidvīryaṅ tavānārya yō māṅ bharturasannidhau৷৷5.58.71৷৷

apahṛtyā৷৷gataḥ pāpa tē nādṛṣṭō mahātmanā.


nārya ignoble, pāpa sinner, yaḥ such you, bhartuḥ husband, asannidhau not near, mām me, apahṛtya abducted, mahātmanā great, tēna by his, adṛṣṭaḥ without being seen, āgataḥ came, tava your, vīryam courage, kiñcit not have little.

'O! ignoble one! when my husband was away, you came and abducted me unseen by the great Rama. You do not have even a little courage (to win me through a straight fight).
na tvaṅ rāmasya sadṛśō dāsyē.pyasya na yujyasē৷৷5.58.72৷৷

yajñīya ssatyavādī ca raṇaślāghī ca rāghavaḥ.


tvam you, rāmasya Rama's, sadṛśaḥ not equal, na not, asya his, dāsyē.pi even of servant, na yujyasē not fit to be, rāghavaḥ Rama, yajñīyaḥ does yagnas, satyavādī always abides in truth, raṇaślāghī ca and valiant in war.

'You are not equal to Rama and not even fit to be his servant. He does yagnas and always abides in truth. He is valiant in war.
jānakyā paruṣaṅ vākyamēvamuktō daśānanaḥ৷৷5.58.73৷৷

jajvāla sahasā kōpāccitāstha iva pāvakaḥ.


jānakyā by Janaki, ēvam in that way, paruṣam harsh, uktaḥ spoken, daśānanaḥ ten-headed one, sahasā suddenly, citāsthaḥ in the funeral pyre, pāvakaḥ iva like fire, kōpāt in anger, jajvāla like flame.

"Thus addressed harshly by Janaki, the ten-headed Ravana blazed up in anger suddenly like the flame of the funeral pyre.
vivṛtya nayanē krūrē muṣṭimudyamya dakṣiṇam৷৷5.58.74৷৷

maithilīṅ hantumārabdha: strībhirhāhākṛtaṅ tadā.


krūrē wicked, nayanē eyes, vivṛtya opened, dakṣiṇam right hand, muṣṭim fist, udyamya raised, maithilīm Mythili, hantum to kill, ārabdhaḥ started, tadā then, strībhiḥ even the women there, hāhākṛtam raised their voice saying, alas !

"Then the wicked Ravana raised his eyebrows and his right fist to strike at Sita and even the she-demon there raised their voice saying, ' alas, alas !'
strīṇāṅ madhyātsamutpatya tasya bhāryā durātmanaḥ৷৷5.58.75৷৷

varā mandōdarī nāma tayā sa pratiṣēdhitaḥ.


durātmanaḥ evil-minded, tasya his, bhāryā wife, mandōdarī nāma named Mandodari, varā noble one, strīṇām among women, madhyāt from the midst, samutpatya came, tayā forward, saḥ he, pratiṣēdhitaḥ objected.

"Evil-minded Ravana's wife Mandodari, a noble one among women came forward from the midst and prevented him.
uktaśca madhurāṅ vāṇīṅ tayā sa madanārditaḥ৷৷5.58.76৷৷

sītayā tava kiṅ kāryaṅ mahēndrasamavikramaḥ.


madanārditaḥ tormented by god of love, saḥ he, tayā such, madhurām sweet, vāṇīm words, uktaśca having spoken, mahēndrasamavikramaḥ equal to Mahendra in might, sītayā Sita, tava your, kiṅ kāryam for what purpose.

"She spoke sweetly to Ravana, who was tormented by the god of love saying, 'For what purpose do you desire Sita? You are equal to Mahendra in might'.
dēvagandharvakanyābhiryakṣakanyābhirēva ca৷৷5.58.77৷৷

sārdhaṅ prabhō ramasvēha sītayā kiṅ kariṣyasi.


prabhō O Lord!, dēvagandharvakanyābhiḥ even gods and daughters of gandharvas, yakṣakanyābhirēvaca even young yaksha ladies, sārdham all, iha here, ramasva enjoy, sītayā with Sita, kiṅ kariṣyasi why do you need.

'O lord! you enjoy with the daughters of gods, gandharvas and even the young ladies of yakshas. Why do you need Sita?'
tatastābhissamētābhirnārībhissa mahābalaḥ৷৷5.58.78৷৷

prasādya sahasā nītō bhavanaṅ svaṅ niśācaraḥ.


tataḥ then, mahābalaḥ mighty, saḥ niśācaraḥ night-wanderer, samētābhiḥ together, tābhiḥ nārībhiḥ all the women, prasādya sprang up, sahasā quickly, svaṅ bhavanam his mansion, nītaḥ took.

"Then all the women got together and stopped the mighty night-ranger, Ravana and quickly took him back to his mansion.
yātē tasmin daśagrīvē rākṣasyō vikṛtānanāḥ৷৷5.58.79৷৷

sītāṅ nirbhartsayāmāsurvākyaiḥ krūraissudāruṇaiḥ.


tasmin daśagrīvē when that ten-headed one, yātē went, vikṛtānanāḥ those ugly-faced ones, rākṣasyaḥ demons, krūraiḥ cruel, sudāruṇaiḥ frightful, vākyaiḥ words, sītām to Sita, nirbhartsayāmāsuḥ threatened.

tṛṇavadbhāṣitaṅ tāsāṅ gaṇayāmāsa jānakī৷৷5.58.80৷৷

garjitaṅ ca tadā tāsāṅ sītāṅ prāpya nirarthakam.


jānakī Janaki, tāsām those, bhāṣitam words, tṛṇavat like a blade of grass, gaṇayāmāsa not cared, tadā then, tāsām they, garjitam frightened, sītām Sita, prāpya uttered, nirarthakam were of no use.

"Janaki did not care for their words of threat, as though they were a blade of grass and of no use to her.
vṛthāgarjitaniścēṣṭā rākṣasyaḥ piśitāśanāḥ৷৷5.58.81৷৷

rāvaṇāya śaśaṅsustāḥ sītādhyavasitaṅ mahat.


piśitāśanāḥ flesh eaters, tāḥ rākṣasyaḥ those demonesses, vṛthāgarjitaniścēṣṭāḥ since their threatenings were of no use, mahat great, tat that, sītādyavasitam Sita's determination was
formidable, rāvaṇāya to Ravana, śaśaṅsuḥ reported.

"Since the threatenings of the she-demons were of no use the ogresses who live on flesh and blood reported to Ravana about great Sita's formidable determination.
tatastāssahitāssarvā nihatāśā nirudyamāḥ৷৷5.58.82৷৷

parikṣipya samantāttāṅ nidrāvaśamupāgatāḥ.


tataḥ then, sarvāḥ all, tāḥ those, sahitāḥ together, nihatāśāḥ given up hope, nirudyamāḥ given up their efforts, tām they, samantāt all over, parikṣipya scattered around, nidrāvaśam to sleep, upāgatāḥ succumbed.

"Then all of them gave up hope of their efforts and scattered around her, succumbed to sleep.
tāsu caiva prasuptāsu sītā bhartṛhitē ratā৷৷5.58.83৷৷

vilapya karuṇaṅ dīnā praśuśōca suduḥkhitā.


tāsu them, prasuptāsu after sleeping, bhartṛhitē well-wisher of the husband, ratā one who remained, sītā Sita, dīnā miserable, karuṇam pathetically, vilapya crying, suduḥkhitā very sad, praśuśōca lamented.

tāsāṅ madhyātsamutthāya trijaṭā vākyamabravīt৷৷5.58.84৷৷

ātmānaṅ khādata kṣipraṅ na sītā vinaśiṣyati.

janakasyātmajā sādhvī snuṣā daśarathasya ca৷৷5.58.85৷৷


tāsām all of them, madhyāt midst, samutthāya got up, trijaṭā Trijata, vākyam these words, abravīt said, kṣipram at once, ātmānam you, khādata eat me, janakasya Janaka's, ātmajā daughter,
sādhvī chaste, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, snuṣā daughter-in-law, sītā Sita, na vinaśiṣyati not be destroyed.

"From the midst of all of them got up Trijata, saying, 'You eat me if you like. Know that Janaka's daughter is a chaste woman and is the daughter-in-law of Dasaratha. She cannot be destroyed'.
svapnō hyadya mayā dṛṣṭō dāruṇō rōmaharṣaṇaḥ.

rakṣasāṅ ca vināśāya bharturasyā jayāya ca৷৷5.58.86৷৷


rakṣasām rakshasas, vināśāya ca even destruction, asyāḥ her, bhartuḥ husband's, jayāya ca even victory, adya today, mayā to me, dāruṇaḥ dreadful, rōmaharṣaṇaḥ horripilating experience, svapnaḥ in dream, dṛṣṭaḥ saw.

'Today I saw in my dream, a dreadful and horripilating scene of destruction of demons and even victory of Sita's husband.
alamasmātparitrātuṅ rāghavādrākṣasīgaṇam.

abhiyācāma vaidēhīmētaddhi mama rōcatē৷৷5.58.87৷৷


asmāt from that, rāghavāt by Rama, rākṣasīgaṇam rakshasa clan, paritrātum to protect, alam enough, vaidēhīm Vaidehi's, abhiyācāma will beg her, ētat by that, mama our, rōcatē hi thinking indeed.

'To protect the demon clan from destruction by Rama, it is enough if we beg her (pardon). Indeed, I think that way.
yasyā hyēvaṅvidhassvapnō duḥkhitāyāḥ pradṛśyatē.

sā duḥkhairvividhairmuktā sukhamāpnōtyanuttamam৷৷5.58.88৷৷

praṇipātaprasannā hi maithilī janakātmajā.


yasyāḥ whoever, duḥkhitāyāḥ is in sorrow, ēvaṅ vidhaḥ in this way, svapnaḥ dream, pradṛśyatē sees, sā that, vividhaiḥ many, duḥkhai grief, vimuktā will be relieved, anuttamam immense, sukham happiness, āpnōti will result, janakātmajā Janaka's daughter, maithilī Maithili, praṇipātaprasannā hi will bless us if we pray her.

'Whoever in a sorrowful state sees such kind of dream, would be not only relieved of all sorrows but will experience immense happiness. Janaka's daughter Sita will bless us with protection if we pray her.
tatassā hrīmatī bālā bharturvijayaharṣitā৷৷5.58.89৷৷

avōcadyadi tattathyaṅ bhavēyaṅ śaraṇaṅ hi vaḥ.


tataḥ then, hrīmatī bashful, bālā young, sā that Sita, bhartuḥ husband, vijayaharṣitā feeling happy that he will succeed, avōcat hearing the words, tat that, tathyaṅ yadi comes true, vaḥ thee, śaraṇam protect, bhavēyam I will.

'On hearing the words (of Trijata) that 'Rama will succeed', young and bashful Sita felt happy and said that 'If it comes true I will protect thee'.
tāṅ cāhaṅ tādṛśīṅ dṛṣṭvā sītāyā dāruṇāṅ daśām.

cintayāmāsa vikrāntō na ca mē nirvṛtaṅ manaḥ৷৷5.58.90৷৷


aham I, vikrāntaḥ heroic, sītāyāḥ Sita, tādṛśīm seeing her deplorable state, tām her, dāruṇām dreadful, daśām state, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, cintayāmāsa started worrying, mē myself, manaḥ in mind, na nirvṛtam not had peace.

"Seeing Sita's deplorable state, her ill-luck and her dread, I began to worry and had no peace of mind.
sambhāṣaṇārthaṅ ca mayā jānakyāścintitō vidhiḥ৷৷5.58.91৷৷

ikṣvākūṇāṅ hi vaṅśastu tatō mama puraskṛtaḥ.


mayā I am, jānakyāḥ with Janaki, sambhāṣaṇārtham to enter into conversation, vidhi strategy, cintitaḥ thought, tataḥ that, ikṣvākūṇām in Ikshvaku, vaṅśastu in the race, mama my, puraskṛtaḥ to praise.

śrutvā tu gaditāṅ vācaṅ rājarṣigaṇapūjitām৷৷5.58.92৷৷

pratyabhāṣata māṅ dēvī bāṣpaiḥ pihitalōcanā.


dēvī the divine lady!, rājarṣigaṇapūjitām sanctified by the names of royal seers, gaditām enumerated, vācam words, śrutvā heard, bāṣpaiḥ tears, pihitalōcanā eyes blinded, mām me, pratyabhāṣata replied.

"The divine lady heard my enumeration, sanctifying the royal seers. She replied me, with her eyes blinded by tears:
kastvaṅ kēna kathaṅ cēha prāptō vānarapuṅgavaḥ৷৷5.58.93৷৷

kā ca rāmēṇa tē prītistanmē śaṅsitumarhasi.


vānarapuṅgava foremost of vanaras, tvam you, kaḥ who, kēna why, katham how, iha here, prāptaḥ could come, tē to you, rāmēṇa with Rama, prītiḥ friendship, kā tell, tat that, mē to me, śaṅsitum in detail, arhasi it is prpoer.

"O foremost of vanaras! who are you? Why and how have you come here? How did you make friendship with Rama? Tell me all that in detail.
tasyāstadvacanaṅ śrutvā hyahamapyabruvaṅ vacaḥ৷৷5.58.94৷৷

dēvi rāmasya bhartustē sahāyō bhīmavikramaḥ.

sugrīvō nāma vikrāntō vānarēndrō mahābalaḥ৷৷5.58.95৷৷


tasyāḥ tat her those, vacanam words, śrutvā hearing, ahamapi I also, vacaḥ these words, abruvam spoke, dēvi O queen!, tē to your, bhartuḥ husband, sahāyaḥ help, mahābalaḥ mighty, bhīmavikramaḥ fierce valour, sugrīvō nāma named Sugriva, vikrāntaḥ warrior, vānarēndraḥ king of monkeys.

"Hearing her I also said, 'O queen! Sugriva, the warrior of fierce valour and king of monkeys developed friendship with your husband'.
tasya māṅ viddhi bhṛtyaṅ tvaṅ hanumantamihāgatam.

bhartrāhaṅ prēṣitastubhyaṅ rāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā৷৷5.58.96৷৷


iha here, āgatam I came, mām me, tasya his, bhṛtyam servant, tvam you, viddhi to find, aham I, bhartrā by your husband, akliṣṭakarmaṇā tireless in action, rāmēṇa by Rama, tubhyam for your sake, prēṣitaḥ sent me.

'I came here as a servant sent by your tireless husband to find you.
idaṅ ca puruṣavyāghraḥ śrīmān dāśarathiḥ svayam.

aṅgulīyamabhijñānamadāttubhyaṅ yaśasvini৷৷5.58.97৷৷


yaśasvini O glorious lady!, puruṣavyāghraḥ tiger among men, śrīmān illustrious, dāśarathiḥ Dasaratha's son, svayam himself, idam this, aṅgulīyam this ring, tubhyam to you, abhijñānam to recognise, adāt sent.

'O glorious lady! the tiger among men, the illustrious son of Dasaratha himself sent this ring to you as a taken of identity.
tadicchāmi tvayā৷৷jñaptaṅ dēvi kiṅ karavāṇyaham.

rāmalakṣmaṇayōḥ pārśvaṅ nayāmi tvāṅ kimuttaram৷৷5.58.98৷৷


dēvi O venerable lady!, tat that, tvayā by your, ājñaptam order, icchāmi wish to know, aham I, kim what, karavāṇi to do, tvām you, rāmalakṣmaṇayōḥ both Rama and Lakshmana, pārśvam to them, nayāmi take you, uttaram back, kim what do you say?

'O venerable lady! I seek your order. What should I do? Should I take you to Rama and Lakshmana? What do you say?
ētacchrutvā viditvā ca sītā janakanandinī.

āharāvaṇamutsādya rāghavō māṅ nayatviti৷৷5.58.99৷৷


janakanandinī delight of Janaka, sītā Sita, ētat all this, śrutvā having heard, vidittvā ca thought over, rāghavaḥ Rama, rāvaṇam Ravana, utsādya slaying, mām me, nayatu should take, iti this, āha she said.

"Having heard all that (Hanuman said) Sita, the delight of Janaka thought over and said, 'Rama should kill Ravana and take me'.
praṇamya śirasā dēvīṅ mahamāryāmaninditām.

rāghavasya manōhlādamabhijñānamayāciṣam৷৷5.58.100৷৷


aham I am, āryām noble, aninditām flawless, dēvīm queen, śirasā bowing, praṇamya saluted, rāghavasya to Rama, manōhlādam very pleasing to his mind, abhijñānam to recognise, ayāciṣam signet.

"Then bowing down I saluted the noble and blameless queen Sita to give a signet, which would be very pleasing to Rama.
atha māmabravītsītā gṛhyatāmayamuttamaḥ.

maṇiryēna mahābāhū rāmastvāṅ bahumanyatē৷৷5.58.101৷৷


atha and then, sītā Sita, mām to me, abravīt said, uttamaḥ best, ayam this, maṇiḥ gem, gṛhyatām take, yēna by this, mahābāhuḥ long-armed, rāmaḥ Rama, tvām you, bahumanyatē presented to him.

"Sita then said to me, 'Take this best of gems and present it to the long-armed Rama as a token'.
ityuktvā tu varārōhā maṇipravaramadbhutam.

prāyacchatparamōdvignā vācā māṅ sandidēśaha৷৷5.58.102৷৷


varārōhā fair-hipped lady, iti thus, uktvā having delivered, adbhutam wonderful, maṇipravaram excellent jewel, prāyacchat gave, paramōdvignā in an anxious state, mām me, vācā spoke, sandidēśa ha message.

"Having said so, the noble lady delivered a wonderful jewel with supreme message to me in a sorrowful mood.
tatastasyai praṇamyāhaṅ rājaputryai samāhitaḥ.

pradakṣiṇaṅ parikrāmamihābhyudgatamānasaḥ৷৷5.58.103৷৷


tataḥ then, aham I, tasyai her, rājaputryai princess, praṇamya saluted, samāhitaḥ with focused mind, iha here, abhyudgatamānasaḥ should come soon, pradakṣiṇam circumambulated, parikrāmam went round.

"Reminded by her again (that Rama should turn up soon to take her), I offered reverential salutations by circumambulating her.
uktō.haṅ punarēvēdaṅ niścitya manasā tayā.

hanumanmama vṛttāntaṅ vaktumarhasi rāghavē৷৷5.58.104৷৷


aham I, tayā to her, manasā in mind, niścitya determined, punarēva again, uktaḥ said, hanumān Hanuman, rāghavē to Rama, mama my, vṛttāntam all about my story, vaktum you tell, arhasi I wish.

yathā śrutvaiva na cirāttāvubhau rāmalakṣmaṇau.

sugrīvasahitau vīrāvupēyātāṅ tathā kuru৷৷5.58.105৷৷


vīrau heroic one, tau they both, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, ubhau both, śrutvaiva on hearing, sugrīvasahitau accompanied by Sugriva, na cirāt not very late, yathā that way, upēyātām coming here, tathā that way, kuru you may do.

'O heroic Hanuman! narrate in such a way that by hearing you both Rama and Lakshmana will come here soon, accompanied by Sugriva.
yadyanyathā bhavēdētaddvau māsau jīvitaṅ mama.

na māṅ drakṣyati kākutsthō mriyē sāhamanāthavat৷৷5.58.106৷৷


anyathā otherwise, bhavēdyadi with none to protect, mama I, jīvitam life, dvau two, māsau months only, kākutstha to Rama, mām me, na drakṣyati not see, sā aham that I, anāthavat like an orphan, mriyē will die.

'Otherwise with none to protect me, I will live only for two months.I will die like an orphan and he will not see me'.
tacchrutvā karuṇaṅ vākyaṅ krōdhō māmabhyavartata.

uttaraṅ ca mayā dṛṣṭaṅ kāryaśēṣamanantaram৷৷5.58.107৷৷


karuṇam pathetic, tat these, vākyam words, śrutvā having heard, mām me, krōdhaḥ anger, abhyavartata overtaken, uttaram reply, anantaram after that, kāryaśēṣam left over task, mayā by me, dṛṣṭam perceived.

tatō.vardhata mē kāyastadā parvatasannibhaḥ.

yuddhakāṅkṣī vanaṅ tacca vināśayitumārabhē৷৷5.58.108৷৷


tataḥ that, tadā then, mē I, kāyaḥ body, parvatasannibhaḥ like a mountain, avardhata increased, yuddhakāṅkṣī intent on fighting, tat that, vanam garden, vināśayitum to destroy, ārabhē started.

"Thereafter, I increased my body to the size of a mountain, intent on fighting and started destroying the pleasure garden.
tadbhagnaṅ vanaṣaṇḍaṅ tu bhrāntatrastamṛgadvijam.

pratibuddhā nirīkṣantē rākṣasyō vikṛtānanāḥ৷৷5.58.109৷৷


vikṛtānanāḥ ugly-faced, rākṣasyaḥ ogresses, pratibuddhāḥ woke up and saw, bhagnam broken, bhrāntatrastamṛgadvijam terrified birds and beasts, tat that, vanaṣaṇḍam destroyed garden, nirīkṣantē saw.

"Those ugly-faced ogresses woke up and saw the devastated garden and terrified beasts and birds.
māṅ ca dṛṣṭvā vanē tasmin samāgamya tatastataḥ.

tā ssamabhyāgatāḥ kṣipraṅ rāvaṇāyācacakṣirē৷৷5.58.110৷৷


tatastataḥ here and there, samāgamya collecting together, tasmin vanē in that garden, mām me, dṛṣṭvā saw, tāḥ them, kṣipram at once, samabhyāgatāḥ understood, rāvaṇāya to Ravana, ācacakṣirē thus reported.

rājasvanamidaṅ durgaṅ tava bhagnaṅ durātmanā.

vānarēṇa hyavijñāya tava vīryaṅ mahābala৷৷5.58.111৷৷


mahābala powerful, rājan king, durātmanā evil-minded, vānarēṇa by a vanara, tava your, vīryam
valour, avijñāya not knowing, durgam inaccessible, tava your, idaṅ vanam this garden, bhagnam destroyed.

'O powerful king! an evil-minded vanara has destroyed the inaccessible pleasure garden not knowing your valour.
durbuddhēstasya rājēndra tava vipriyakāriṇaḥ.

vadhamājñāpaya kṣipraṅ yathāsau vilayaṅ vrajēt৷৷5.58.112৷৷


rājēndra O king!, asau yathā this, vilayam aimlessly, vrajēt wanderer, tava your, vipriyakāriṇaḥ who has done contrary to your interest, durbudhdēḥ wicked-minded, tasya his, vadham to kill, kṣipram immediately, ājñāpaya order.

'O king! may orders be issued to kill this wicked-minded vanara wandering aimlessly. He has done contrary to your interest.
tacchrutvā rākṣasēndrēṇa visṛṣṭā bhṛśadurjayāḥ.

rākṣasāḥ kiṅkarā nāma rāvaṇasya manōnugāḥ৷৷5.58.113৷৷


tat that, śrutvā having heard, rākṣasēndrēṇa by the lord of demons, bhṛśadurjayāḥ who are invincible, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, manōnugāḥ those who know his mind, kiṅkarā nāma called kinkara, rākṣasāḥ demon, visṛṣṭāḥ sent.

"Ravana, lord of the demons having heard (the ogresses) sent invincible ogres called kinkaras who know his mind.
tēṣāmaśītisāhasraṅ śūlamudgarapāṇinām.

mayā tasminvanōddēśē parighēṇa niṣūditam৷৷5.58.114৷৷


tasmin those, vanōddhēśē near the garden, śūlamudgarapāṇinām tridents and maces, tēṣām with them, aśītisāhasram battalion of eighty thousand (demons), mayā by me, parighēṇa by iron bar, niṣūditam killed.

"I killed with an iron bar a battalion of eighty thousand demons who were guarding the garden with tridents and maces.
tēṣāṅ tu hataśēṣā yē tē gatvā laghuvikramāḥ.

nihataṅ ca mahatsainyaṅ rāvaṇāyācacakṣirē৷৷5.58.115৷৷


tēṣām them, yē who were, hataśēṣāḥ left behind, tē they, laghuvikramāḥ less powerful, gatvā went, mahat great, sainyam army, nihatam killed, rāvaṇāya to Ravana, ācacakṣirē reported.

"Those who were left behind, the less powerful ones went and reported to Ravana that the great army has been killed.
tatō mē buddhirutpannā caityaprāsādamākramam.

tatrasthānrākṣasān hatvā śataṅ stambhēna vai punaḥ৷৷5.58.116৷৷

lalāmabhūtō laṅkāyāssa vai vidhvaṅsitō mayā.


tataḥ then, mē I, buddhiḥ intellect, utpannā arose, caityaprāsādam high rise mansion, ākramam taking hold, stambhēna with a pillar, tatrasthān stationed there, śatam a hundred, rākṣasān demons, hatvā killed, punaḥ again, mayā by me, laṅkāyāḥ in Lanka, lalāmabhūtaḥ a decorative mansion, saḥ that, vidhvaṅsitaḥ destroyed.

"Then a thought struck my mind. I took hold of a pillar of the tall, decorated mansion of Lanka and killed with it all the hundred demons stationed there.
tataḥ prahastasya sutaṅ jambumālinamādiśat৷৷5.58.117৷৷

rākṣasairbahubhissārdhaṅ ghōrarūpairbhayānakaiḥ.


tataḥ then, ghōrarūpaiḥ of terrific appearance, bhayānakaiḥ frightening, bahubhiḥ many, rākṣasaiḥ ogres, sārdham together with, prahastasya Prahasta's, sutam son, jambumālinam Jambumali, ādiśat ordered

taṅ mahābalasampannaṅ rākṣasaṅ raṇakōvidam৷৷5.58.118৷৷

parighēṇātighōrēṇa sūdayāmi sahānugam.


mahābalasampannam endowed with mighty strength, raṇakōvidam expert in war, sahānugam and others who accompanied, taṅ rākṣasam the demons, ghōrēṇa by a terrific, parighēṇa with iron bar, sūdayāmi slayed.

"With a dreadful iron bar I slayed Jambumali, who was endowed with mighty strength, and was an expert in war and other terrific ogres who accompanied him.
tacchrutvā rākṣasēndrastu mantriputtrānmahābalān৷৷5.58.119৷৷

padātibalasampannān prēṣayāmāsa rāvaṇaḥ.


rākṣasēndraḥ demon king, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, mahābalān mighty army, padātibalasampannān strong foot-soldiers, mantriputrān sons of ministers, prēṣayāmāsa sent.

"Ravana, the demon king sent his mighty army of strong foot-soldiers, the sons of ministers.
parighēṇaiva tān sarvānnayāmi yamasādanam৷৷5.58.120৷৷

mantriputtrānhatāncchṛtvā samarē.laghuvikramān.

pañca sēnāgragācchrūrānprēṣayāmāsa rāvaṇaḥ৷৷5.58.121৷৷


tān sarvān all of them, parighēṇaiva with iron bar only, yamasādanam the abode of Yama, nayāmi sent, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, samarē in combat, laghuvikramān less valiant, mantriputrān sons of ministers, hatān having been killed, śrutvā heard, śūrān heroes, pañca five, sēnāgragān army generals, prēṣayāmāsa sent.

"I sent all of them to the abode of Yama with just an iron bar. Having heard about the death of the less powerful ones, Ravana sent five heroic army generals.
tānahaṅ sahasainyānvai sarvānēvābhyasūdayam.

tataḥ punardaśagrīvaḥ putramakṣaṅ mahābalam৷৷5.58.122৷৷

bahubhī rākṣasaissārdhaṅ prēṣayāmāsa rāvaṇaḥ.


aham I, sahasainyān along with the army, tān sarvān all of them, abhyasūdayam having been killed, tataḥ then, daśagrīvaḥ ten-headed, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, mahābalam mighty, putram son, akṣam Aksha, bahubhiḥ and many, rākṣasaiḥ demons, sārdham together with, prēṣayāmāsa sent out.

"Since I killed all of them along with the army, the ten-headed Ravana sent out his mighty son Aksha together with many demons.
taṅ tu mandōdarīputtraṅ kumāraṅ raṇapaṇḍitam৷৷5.58.123৷৷

sahasā khaṅ samutkrāntaṅ pādayōśca gṛhītavān.

carmāsinaṅ śataguṇaṅ bhrāmayitvā vyapēṣayam৷৷5.58.124৷৷


raṇapaṇḍitam expert in war, mandōdarīputtram Mandodari's son, kham to the sky, utkrāntam risen up, carmāsinam feet, taṅ kumāram of that young man, sahasā at once, pādayōḥ both feet, gṛhītavān caught hold of, śataguṇam hundred times, bhrāmayitvā whirled him round, vyavēṣayam smashed.

"When Mandodari's son, an expert in war had risen up to the sky I caught his feet and whirled him round a hundred times and smashed him.
tamakṣamāgataṅ bhagnaṅ niśamya sa daśānanaḥ.

tata indrajitaṅ nāma dvitīyaṅ rāvaṇassutam৷৷5.58.125৷৷

vyādidēśa susaṅkṛddhō balinam yuddhadurmadam.


daśānanaḥ ten-faced, saḥ rāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, āgatam gone, akṣam of Aksha, bhagnam destroyed, niśamya after hearing, susaṅkṛddhaḥ became very angry, tataḥ then, balinam strong, yuddhadurmadam thirsting for war, indrajitaṅ nāma named Indrajit, dvitīyam second, sutam son, vyādidēśa gave instruction.

"When Aksha was done to death, the ten-faced Ravana was enraged and gave instruction to the second son, called Indrajit who was thirsting for war.
taccāpyahaṅ balaṅ sarvaṅ taṅ ca rākṣasapuṅgavam৷৷5.58.126৷৷

naṣṭaujasaṅ raṇē kṛtvā paraṅ harṣamupāgamam.


aham I, sarvam all, tat that, balaṅ ca even army, tam them, rākṣasapuṅgavaṅ ca even the army chiefs, raṇē in combat, naṣṭaujasam having been destroyed, kṛtvā done, param very, harṣam happy, upāgamam became.

"When the army and even the Generals were done to death in combat I was very happy.
mahatāpi mahābāhuḥ pratyayēna mahābalaḥ৷৷5.58.127৷৷

prēṣitō rāvaṇēnaiva saha vīrairmadōtkaṭaiḥ.


mahābāhuḥ strong-armed, mahābalaḥ mighty, madōtkaṭaiḥ intoxicated, vīraiḥ saha including the warriors, rāvaṇēnaiva Ravana's confidence, mahatā great, pratyayēna again,prēṣitaḥ sent.

"Thinking that Indrajit will surely kill me, the strong-armed mighty Ravana again sent intoxicated demon warriors.
sō.viṣahyaṅ hi māṅ buddhvā svaṅ balaṅ cāvamarditam৷৷5.58.128৷৷

brāhmaṇāstrēṇa sa tu māṅ prābadhnācchātivēgitaḥ.


saḥ he, mām my, āviṣahyam cannot be slain, buddhvā knowing, svam his, balaṅ ca strength, avamarditam is reduced, sa tu that, ativēgitaḥ with high speed, mām at me, brāhmēṇa astrēṇa Brahma's weapon, prābadhnāt captured.

"Realising that I cannot be slain and that his (Indrajit's) power is reduced, he released Brahma's weapon on me with high speed and captured me.
rajjubhiścābhibadhnanti tatō māṅ tatra rākṣasāḥ৷৷5.58.129৷৷

rāvaṇasya samīpaṅ ca gṛhītvā māmupānayan.


tataḥ then, tatra there, rākṣasāḥ demons, mām me, rajjubhiḥ with ropes, abhibadhnanti also bound, mām me, gṛhītvā holding, rāvaṇasya to Ravana, samīpam near, upānayan brought.

"Then the demons bound me with ropes and brought me to Ravana.
dṛṣṭvā sambhāṣitaścāhaṅ rāvaṇēna durātmanā৷৷5.58.130৷৷

pṛṣṭaśca laṅkāgamanaṅ rākṣasānāṅ ca taṅ vadham.


aham I, durātmanā wicked-minded, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, sambāṣitaśca conversed, laṅkāgamanam about my coming to Lanka, rākṣasānām ogres, tam them, vadham killing, pṛṣṭaśca enquired.

"The wicked-minded Ravana, then enquired me why I came to Lanka and why I killed the demons.
tatsarvaṅ ca mayā tatra sītārthamiti jalpitam৷৷5.58.131৷৷

asyāhaṅ darśanākāṅkṣī prāptastvadbhavanaṅ vibhō.

mārutasyaurasaḥ putrō vānarō hanumānaham৷৷5.58.132৷৷


tat that, sarvam entire, sītārthamiti for Sita's sake, mayā I am, tatra there, jalpitam burnt, vibhō O king, asyāḥ your, darśanakāṅkṣī desiring to see her, tvadbhavanam your mansion, prāptaḥ
reached, aham I, mārutasya Wind-god's, aurasaḥ putraḥ legitimate son, vānaraḥ vanara, hanumān Hanuman.

'I have done all this for the sake of Sita, O demon king! I came to your mansion desiring to see Sita. I am the legitimate son of Wind-god. My name is Hanuman.
rāmadūtaṅ ca māṅ viddhi sugrīvasacivaṅ kapim.

sō.haṅ dūtyēna rāmasya tvatsakāśamihāgataḥ৷৷5.58.133৷৷


kapim I am a vanara, mām I am, rāmadūtam messenger of Rama, sugrīvasacivam minister of Sugriva, viddhi you may know, saḥ aham that I, rāmasya Rama's, dūtyēna as messenger, tvatsakāśam to convey that message, iha here, āgataḥ came.

'I am a vanara, a messenger of Rama and minister of Sugriva.You may know that I have come here to convey the message of Rama to you.
sugrīvaśca mahātējāssatvāṅ kuśalamabravīt.

dharmārthakāmasahitaṅ hitaṅ pathyamuvāca ca৷৷5.58.134৷৷


mahātējāḥ highly powerful, saḥ sugrīvaśca Sugriva, tvām to you, kuśalam welfare, abravīt enquires, dharmārthakāmasahitam in accordance with dharma, wealth and well-being, pathyam that which provides, hitam beneficial advice, uvāca sent.

'Highly powerful Sugriva enquires your welfare. He sends beneficial advice to you for your righteousness, pleasures and well-being.
vasatō ṛśyamūkē mē parvatē vipuladrumē.

rāghavō raṇavikrāntō mittratvaṅ samupāgataḥ৷৷5.58.135৷৷


vipuladrumē filled with plenty of trees, ṛśyamūkē Rshyamuka, vasataḥ dwelling, mē I, raṇavikrāntaḥ skilled in war, rāghavaḥ Rama, mittratvam friendship, upāgataḥ was made.

'While I was dwelling at the wooded-mountain in Rshyamuka, a treaty of friendship was made with Rama, who is skilled in war.
tēna mē kathitaṅ rājñā bhāryā mē rakṣasā hṛtā.

tatra sāhāyyamasmākaṅ kāryaṅ sarvātmanā tvayā৷৷5.58.136৷৷


rājñā the king, tēna by him, mē to me, kathitam revealed, mē bhāryā my wife, rakṣasā by the demon, hṛtā abducted, tatra there, tvayā by your, sarvātmanā by all ways, asmākam by you, sāhāyyam help, kāryam do.

'The king said, ' My wife was abducted by a demon. I request your help by all means to get her'.
mayā ca kathitaṅ tasmai vālinaśca vadhaṅ prati.

tatra sāhāyyahētōrmē samayaṅ kartumarhasi৷৷5.58.137৷৷


mayā ca I also, vālinaḥ Vali, vadhaṅ prati will kill in turn, tasmai your, kathitam story, tatra thereupon, mē to me, sahāyyahētōḥ will help, samayam agreement, kartum will do (said), arhasi is proper.

'Sugriva told the story of Vali in turn and asked for his help and to make agreement to kill Vali.
vālinā hṛtarājyēna sugrīvēṇa mahāprabhuḥ.

cakrē.gnisākṣikaṅ sakhyaṅ rāghavassaha lakṣmaṇaḥ৷৷5.58.138৷৷


mahāprabhuḥ that great lord, saha lakṣmaṇaḥ accompanied by Lakshmana, rāghavaḥ Rama, vālinā Vali, hṛtarājyēna kingdom usurped, sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, agnisākṣikam in the presence of fire as witness, sakhyam ally, cakrē made.

With fire as witness the great lord, Rama along with Lakshmana made friendship with Sugriva whose kingdom had been usurped.
tēna vālinamutpāṭya śarēṇaikēna saṅyugē.

vānarāṇāṅ mahārājaḥ kṛtassa plavatāṅ prabhuḥ৷৷5.58.139৷৷


tēna and then, saṅyugē in the combat, ēkēna with a single, śarēṇa arrow, vālinam Vali, utpāṭya slayed, plavatām for vanaras, prabhuḥ king, saḥ he, vānarāṇām vanaras, mahārājaḥ lord, kṛtaḥ did.

'In the combat Rama killed Vali with a single arrow and made Sugriva the king of vanaras.
tasya sāhāyyamasmābhiḥ kāryaṅ sarvātmanā tviha.

tēna prasthāpitastubhyaṅ samīpamiha dharmataḥ৷৷5.58.140৷৷


iha here, asmābhiḥ we also, sarvātmanā all of us, tasya to him, sahāyyam help, kāryam in this task, tēna so, tubhyam surely, samīpam to you, dharmataḥ righteously, prasthāpitaḥ sent to convey the message.

'We too have to help him in this task. So a message is sent to you on righteous grounds.
kṣipramānīyatāṅ sītā dīyatāṅ rāghavāya ca.

yāvanna harayō vīrā vidhamanti balaṅ tava৷৷5.58.141৷৷


vīrāḥ heroic, harayaḥ vanaras, tava your, balam army, yāvat entire, na vidhamanti before exterminating your army, sītā Sita, kṣipram at once, ānīyatām get, rāghavāya to Rama, dīyatāṅ ca you may give.

'Before the heroic vanaras exterminate your entire army, return Sita at once to Rama.
vānarāṇāṅ prabhāvō hi na kēna viditaḥ purā.

dēvatānāṅ saṅkāśaṅ ca yē gacchanti nimantritāḥ৷৷5.58.142৷৷


yē who, nimantritāḥ summoned to, dēvatānām even devatas, saṅkāśam for the help, gacchanti purā earlier, vānarāṇām by the vanaras, prabhāvaḥ power, kēna who, na viditaḥ does not know.

'Who knows not the power of Vanaras in the past? Even gods had sought their help.
iti vānararājastvāmāhētyabhihitō mayā.

māmaikṣata tataḥ kruddhaścakṣuṣā pradahanniva৷৷5.58.143৷৷


iti this, vānararājaḥ king of vanaras, tvām to you, āha to tell, iti this, mayā my, abhihitaḥ wishing your welfare, tataḥ that, kruddhaḥ angrily, cakṣuṣā eyes, pradahanniva as if to burn, mām at me, aikṣata looked.

'This I was asked to tell you by the king of vanaras wishing your welfare'. 'Ravana then angrily looked at me as if to burn me.
tēna vadhyō.hamājñaptō rakṣasā raudrakarmaṇā.

matprabhāvamavijñāya rāvaṇēna durātmanā৷৷5.58.144৷৷


raudrakarmaṇā one who performs dreadful actions, rakṣasā by the demon, durātmanā evil-minded one, tēna rāvaṇēna by that Ravana, matprabhāvam my power, avijñāya not knowing, aham I, vadhyaḥ to kill, ājñaptaḥ ordered.

"The evil-minded demon, Ravana, who perpetrates dreadful acts ordered my slaughter, not knowing my power.
tatō vibhīṣaṇō nāma tasya bhrātā mahāmatiḥ.

tēna rākṣasarājō.sau yācitō mama kāraṇāt৷৷5.58.145৷৷


vibhīṣaṇō nāma named Vibhishana, mahāmatiḥ very pious, tasya his, bhrātā brother, tataḥ then, tēna him, asau was there, rākṣasarājaḥ demon king, mama kāraṇāt on account of me, yācitaḥ solicited.

"Vibhisana, a very pious brother of the demon king, interceded on my behalf.
naivaṅ rākṣasaśārdūla tyajyatāmēṣa niścayaḥ.

rājaśāstravyapētō hi mārgaḥ saṅsēvyatē tvayā৷৷5.58.146৷৷


rākṣasaśārdūla tiger among demons, ēvam in that way, na not, ēṣaḥ that way, niścayaḥ decision, tyajyatām give up, rājaśāstravyapētaḥ according to science of royal polity, mārgaḥ course, tvayā by you, saṅsēvyatē hi indeed not permitted.

"Vibhishana, a tiger among demons, asked Ravana to give up his decision as it was a forbidden course according to the science of royal polity.
dūtavadhyā na dṛṣṭā hi rājaśāstrēṣu rākṣasa.

dūtēna vēditavyaṅ ca yathārthaṅ hitavādinā৷৷5.58.147৷৷


rākṣasa demon, rājaśāstrēṣu by the royal code, dūtavadhyā killing of emissary, na dṛṣṭā hi not seen indeed, hitavādinā well-wisher, dūtēna messenger, yathārtham truth, vēditavyam has to convey.

'The royal code prohibits the murder of an emissary. A well-wishing emissary should convey the truth.
sumahatyaparādhē.pi dūtasyātulavikramaḥ.

virūpakaraṇaṅ dṛṣṭaṅ na vadhō.stīti śāstrataḥ৷৷5.58.148৷৷


atulavikramaḥ one of immeasureable courage, sumahati any kind, aparādhē.pi harm done, dūtasya at emissary, virūpakaraṇam may be mutilated, dṛṣṭam seen, śāstrataḥ in the sastras,vadhaḥ killing,nāsti not there.

'O Ravana of immeasurable courage! even if the emissary has done any kind of harm he may be mutilated but not murdered. Nowhere do the sastras allow killing (of an ambassador).
vibhīṣaṇēnaivamuktō rāvaṇassandidēśa tān.

rākṣasānētadēvāsya lāṅgūlaṅ dahyatāmiti৷৷5.58.149৷৷


vibhīṣaṇēna by Vibhishana, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having spoken, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, asya his, ētat all that, lāṅgūlam tail, dahyatāmiti to burn, tān rākṣasān to the demons, sandidēśa instructed.

'On hearing Vibhishana, Ravana instructed the demons to burn my tail.
tatastasya vacaḥ śrutvā mama pucchaṅ samantataḥ.

vēṣṭitaṅ śaṇavalkaiśca jīrṇaiḥ kārpāsajaiḥ paṭaiḥ৷৷5.58.150৷৷


tataḥ then, tasya those, vacaḥ words, śrutvā having heard, mama my, puccham tail, samantataḥ all of them together, śaṇavalkaiḥ saris made of fibre, jīrṇaiḥ tattered, kārpāsajaiḥ of cotton, paṭaiḥ rags, vēṣṭitam wrapped.

"Having heard the king's words, all the demons collected and held my tail, wrapped it with saris of fibres and tattered rags of cotton.
rākṣasāḥ siddhasannāhāstatastē caṇḍavikramāḥ.

tadā.dahyanta mē pucchaṅ nighnanta: kāṣṭhamuṣṭibhiḥ৷৷5.58.151৷৷

baddhasya bahubhiḥ pāśairyantritasya ca rākṣasaiḥ.


tataḥ then, siddhasannāhāḥ got ready, caṇḍavikramāḥ who had terrific courage, rākṣasāḥ demons, kāṣṭhamuṣṭibhiḥ with firesticks and fists, nighnantaḥ hit, bahubhiḥ many, pāśaiḥ ropes, baddhasya tied, rākṣasaiḥ by the demons, yantritasya fastened, mē me, puccham tail, tadā then, adahyanta set fire.

"Many ferociously courageous demons got ready. They bound me and hit me with fire-sticks and fists. They fastened my tail with ropes and set in on fire.
tatastē rākṣasāśśūrā baddhaṅ māmagnisaṅvṛtam৷৷5.58.152৷৷

aghōṣayanrājamārgē nagaradvāramāgatāḥ.


tataḥ then, śūrāḥ courageous, rākṣasāḥ by demons, nagaradvāram gate of the city, āgatāḥ took, baddham bound, agnisaṅvṛtam set on fire, mām me, rājamārgē in the royal street, aghōṣayan announced loudly.

"The brave demons took me round the city through the royal streets and announced loudly to let every one know that I am bound and that my tail has been set on fire.
tatō.haṅ sumahadrūpaṅ saṅkṣipya punarātmanaḥ৷৷5.58.153৷৷

vimōcayitvā taṅ bandhaṅ prakṛtisthaḥ sthitaḥ punaḥ.

āyasaṅ parighaṅ gṛhya tāni rakṣāṅsyasūdayam৷৷5.58.154৷৷


tataḥ then, aham I, ātmanaḥ my own, sumahat very huge, rūpam form, punaḥ again, saṅkṣipya assumed small form, taṅ bandham that bondage, vimōcayitvā got rid off, punaḥ again, prakṛtisthaḥ into my natural huge form, sthitaḥ stayed, āyasam near by, parigham iron beam, gṛhya took up, tāni rakṣāṅsi that rakshasas, asūdayam killed.

"I reduced my form and rid of the bondage. Then again I assumed my original huge form and took up an iron bar lying near and killed all the demons (present).
tatastannagaradvāraṅ vēgēnāplutavānaham.

pucchēna ca pradīptēna tāṅ purīṅ sāṭṭagōpurām৷৷5.58.155৷৷

dahāmyahamasaṅbhrāntō yugāntāgniriva prajāḥ.


tataḥ then, aham I, vēgēna quickly, tat that, nagaradvāram gate of the city, āplutavān leapt, aham I, asaṅbhrāntaḥ not perplexed, yugāntāgniḥ fire at the end of the dissolution, prajāḥ iva like the world, sāṭṭaprākāragōpurām boundaries and towering mansions, tāṅ purīm of the city, pradīptēna by fire, puccēna by the tail, dahāmi burnt away.

"Then I leaped to the entrance gate of the city without being perplexed. With my burning tail I set fire to the boundaries and towering mansions which looked like the world at the end of dissolution.
vinaṣṭā jānakī vyaktaṅ na hyadagdhaḥ pradṛśyatē৷৷5.58.156৷৷

laṅkāyāṅ kaściduddhēśaḥ sarvā bhasmīkṛtā purī.


vyaktam after doing so, jānakī Janaki, vinaṣṭā may be burnt, laṅkāyām with Lanka, kaścit perhaps, uddhēśaḥ thinking so, adagdhaḥ rose up, na pradṛśyatē hi not even one place was left unburnt, sarvā completely, purī city, bhasmīkṛtā reduced to ashes

dahatā ca mayā laṅkāṅ dagdhā sītā na saṅśayaḥ৷৷5.58.157৷৷

rāmasya hi mahatkāryaṅ mayēdaṅ vitathīkṛtam.


laṅkām Lanka, dahatā burnt, mayā by me, sītā Sita, dagdhā has burnt, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na not, mayā to me, rāmasya of Rama, idam this, mahat great, kāryam purpose, vitathīkṛtam has been spoilt.

"Lanka has been burnt by me and Sita might have also been burnt. There is no doubt. The great purpose of Rama has been spoilt by me'.
iti śōkasamāviṣṭaścintāmahamupāgataḥ৷৷5.58.158৷৷

athāhaṅ vācamaśrauṣaṅ cāraṇānāṅ śubhākṣarām.

jānakī na ca dagdhēti vismayōdantabhāṣiṇām৷৷5.58.159৷৷


iti thus, śōkasamāviṣṭaḥ overtaken by sorrow, aham I, cintām worry, upāgataḥ became, atha and then, aham I, jānakī Janaki, na ca dagdhā not been burn, iti this, vismayōdantabhāṣiṇām
wonderful utterances, cāraṇānām from charanas, śubhākṣarām propitious, vācam words, aśrauṣam heard.

"Thus I was overtaken by sorrow and worry. Just then I heard the wonderful propitious utterances of charanas announcing that Sita was not burnt.
tatō mē buddhirutpannā śrutvā tāmadbhutāṅ giram.

adagdhā jānakītyēvaṅ nimittaiścōpalakṣitā৷৷5.58.160৷৷


adbhutām amazing, tāṅ giram those words, śrutvā after hearing, tataḥ then, jānakī Janaki, adagdhā not been burnt, ityēvam this way, mē my, buddhiḥ knew, utpannā arose, nimittaiśca on account of her, upalakṣitā I understood.

"It was amazing to hear the words of the charanas. On hearing that Jankai had not been burnt, I understood that it is on her account (that he is also not burnt although his tail was ignited.)
dīpyamānē tu lāṅgūlē na māṅ dahati pāvakaḥ.

hṛdayaṅ ca prahṛṣṭaṅ mē vātāssurabhigandhinaḥ৷৷5.58.161৷৷


lāṅgūlē tail, dīpyamānē was burning, pāvakaḥ by fire, mām but I, na dahati was not burnt, mē my, hṛdayaṅ ca from my heart, prahṛṣṭam joy, vātāḥ wind, surabhigandhinaḥ very sweet fragrance.

"My tail was burning but I was not burnt by fire. There was joy in my heart. The wind carried sweet fragrance.
tairnimittaiśca dṛṣṭāthai: kāraṇaiśca mahāguṇaiḥ.

ṛṣivākyaiśca siddhārthairabhavaṅ hṛṣṭamānasaḥ৷৷5.58.162৷৷


dṛṣṭārthaiḥ by such signs, taiḥ those two, nimittai: reasons, mahāguṇaiḥ great virtues, kāraṇaiśca and for these reasons, siddhārthaiḥ will accomplish, ṛṣivākyaiśca uttered by the words of sages, hṛṣṭamānasaḥ felt very happy, abhavam attained.

"For these two auspicious signs and the highly propitious words uttered by the sages I felt glad at heart.
punardṛṣṭvā ca vaidēhīṅ visṛṣṭaśca tayā punaḥ.

tataḥ parvatamāsādya tatrāriṣṭamahaṅ punaḥ৷৷5.58.163৷৷

pratiplavanamārēbhē yuṣmaddharśanakāṅkṣayā.


vaidēhīm to Vaidehi, punaḥ again, dṛṣṭvā ca and to see, tayā like that, punaḥ again, visṛṣṭaḥ seeking permission, tataḥ then, ariṣṭaparvatam mountain Arishta, punaḥ again, āsādya ascended, aham I, yuṣmaddharśanakāṅkṣayā to see you all, pratiplavanam leapt again, ārēbhē started.

tataḥ pavanacandrārkasiddhagandharvasēvitam৷৷5.58.164৷৷

panthānamahamākramya bhavatō dṛṣṭavāniha.


tataḥ then, aham I, pavanacandrārkasiddhagandharvasēvitam by Wind-god, the Moon, the Sun, the siddhas and the gandharvas, panthānam through the path travelled by, āśritya came, iha here, bhavataḥ to you, dṛṣṭavān to see.

"Passing along the path of the Wind-god, the Moon, the Sun, the siddhas and the gandharvas I came to see you.
rāghavasya prabhāvēṇa bhavatāṅ caiva tējasā৷৷5.58.165৷৷

sugrīvasya ca kāryārthaṅ mayā sarvamanuṣṭhitam.


rāghavasya Rama's, prabhāvēṇa by the power, bhavatām your, tējasā caiva grace, sugrīvasya Sugriva's, kāryārthaṅ ca on his account, mayā for me, sarvam all, anuṣṭhitam was favourable.

"Everything was favourable to me by the power of Rama, by your goodwill and for the great purpose of Sugriva.
ētatsarvaṅ mayā tatra yathāvadupapāditam৷৷5.58.166৷৷

atra yanna kṛtaṅ śēṣaṅ tatsarvaṅ kriyatāmiti.


ētat all that, sarvam entire, tatra there, mayā by me, yathāvat as it is, upapāditam presented, atra there, yat whatever, na kṛtam not done, śēṣam remaining task, tat that, sarvam everything, kriyatām will do.

"Let all that could not be done there and still remains to be done, be accomplished by you. I have presented the entire thing".
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē aṣṭapañcāśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyeighth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
