[Monkey leaders enter Madhuvan on the outskirts of Kishkinda and destroy it in their drunkenness.]

tatō jāmbavatō vākyamagṛhṇanta vanaukasaḥ.

aṅgadapramukhā vīrā hanumāṅśca mahākapiḥ৷৷5.61.1৷৷


tataḥ then, aṅgadapramukhāḥ Angada and other leaders, vīrāḥ heroes, vanaukasaḥ wanderers of the forest, vanaras, mahākapiḥ great monkey, hanumāṅśca and Hanuman, jāmbavataḥ Jambavan's, vākyam these words, agṛhṇanta agreed upon.

In the midst of all the leaders of the monkeys including Angada, Hanuman accepted Jambavan's advice.
prītimantastataḥ sarvē vāyuputraparasparāḥ.

mahēndrādriṅ parityajya pupluvuḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ৷৷5.61.2৷৷

mērumandarasaṅkāśā mattā iva mahāgajāḥ.

chādayanta ivākāśaṅ mahākāyā mahābalāḥ৷৷5.61.3৷৷

sabhājyamānaṅ bhūtaistamātmavantaṅ mahābalam.

hanūmantaṅ mahāvēgaṅ vahanta iva dṛṣṭibhiḥ৷৷5.61.4৷৷

rāghavē cārthanirvavṛttiṅ kartuṅ ca paramaṅ yaśaḥ.

samādhāya samṛddhārthāḥ sarvēsiddhibhirunnatā৷৷5.61.5৷৷

priyākhyānōnmukhāḥ sarvē sarvē yuddhābhinandinaḥ.

sarvē rāmapratīkārē niścitārthā manassvinaḥ৷৷5.61.6৷৷


tataḥ then, mērumandarasaṅkāśāḥ resembling Meru mountain, mattāḥ in rut, gajāḥ iva like elephants, ākāśam sky, chādayantaḥ iva as though covering the sky, mahākāyāḥ of huge body, mahābalāḥ mighty, plavagarṣabhāḥ bulls among leaping monkeys, sarvē all, mahēndrādrim from the summit of Mahendra mountain, parityajya left, prītimantaḥ very happily, vāyuputrapurassarāḥ led by the son of the Wind-god, bhūtaiḥ all creatures, sabhājyamānam praised by, ātmavantam self-confident, mahābalam mighty, mahāvēgam swift, hanūmantam Hanuman, dṛṣṭibhiḥ seeing, vahantaḥ iva like seeing without blinking, rāghavē Rama's, arthanirvavṛtatim remaining in state of offering, paramam supreme, yaśaḥ fame, kartum to do, samādhāya concentrating, samṛddhārthāḥ better than others, karmasiddhibhiḥ accomplished ones, unnatāḥ eager, pupluvuḥ jumping vanaras, sarvē all, priyākhyānōnmukhāḥ pleasantly talking among themselves, sarvē all, yuddhābhinandinaḥ anxious to wage a war, manassvinaḥ determined, sarvē all, rāmapratīkārē to please, niścitārthāḥ determined.

Thereafter led by Hanuman, all the vanaras left Mahendra mountain and marched very happily. The vanaras were strong and huge like elephants and resembled mountain Meru. Moreover when they leaped up they seemed to cover the sky (so it was difficult to tell their numbers). Since Hanuman had accomplished the task, the vanaras were praising his strength, his swiftness and courage. They were looking at Hanuman without blinking their eyes, and seemed as though they were carrying him by their eyes. They were determined in their minds to please Rama. Remaining in a state of offering themselves, some of them more accomplished than others, collected together eager to wage war and talking pleasantly among themselves having resolved to assist Rama.
plavamānāḥ khamāplutya tatastē kānanaukasaḥ.

nandanōpamayāsēdurvanaṅ drumalatāyutam৷৷5.61.7৷৷


tataḥ then, tē they, kānanaukasaḥ forest-dwellers, monkeys, kham sky, āphlutya rising up, plavamānāḥ started leaping, drumalatāyutam filled with trees and creepers, nandanōpamam like the garden of Indra, vanam garden, āsēduḥ entered.

"The monkeys leaped into the sky and entered the garden that resembled the garden of Indra filled with trees and creepers.
yattanmadhuvanaṅ nāma sugrīvasyābhirakṣitam.

adhṛṣyaṅ sarvabhūtānāṅ sarvabhūtamanōharam৷৷5.61.8৷৷


abhirakṣitam well-protected, sarvabhūtānām all creatures, adhṛṣyam difficult to access, sarvabhūtamanōharam enchanting to all beings, yat that, sugrīvasya Sugriva's, madhuvanaṅ nāma Madhuvanam, tat that.

The Madhuvanam of Sugriva was well-protected and was difficult to access for the vanaras. It was enchating to all beings.
yadrakṣati mahāvīrya ssadā dadhimukhaḥ kapiḥ.

mātulaḥ kapimukhyasya sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ৷৷5.61.9৷৷


mahātmanaḥ great, kapimukhyasya foremost of monkeys, sugrīvasya Sugriva's, mātulaḥ maternal uncle, mahāvīryaḥ of great valour, dadhimukhaḥ Dadhimukha, kapiḥ monkey, yat that which, sadā always, rakṣati protected.

Dadhimukha, the foremost of all monkeys, of great valour and the maternal uncle of Sugriva was the care-taker of the garden.
tē tadvanamupāgamya babhūvuḥ paramōtkaṭāḥ.

vānarā vānarēndrasya manaḥ kāntatamaṅ mahat৷৷5.61.10৷৷


tē those, vānarāḥ vanaras, vānarēndrasya Vanara king's, manaḥkāntatamam delighting to all, mahat extensive, tat that, vanam garden, upāgamya on reaching, paramōtkaṭāḥ highly rejoiced, babhūvuḥ became.

On reaching the vanara king's extensive, delightful garden all the vanaras highly rejoiced.
tatastē vānarā hṛṣṭā dṛṣṭavā madhuvanaṅ mahat.

kumāramabhyayācanta madhūni madhupiṅgalāḥ৷৷5.61.11৷৷


tataḥ then, madhupiṅgalāḥ honey-coloured monkeys, tē vānarāḥ those vanaras, mahat large, madhuvanam Madhuvanam, dṛṣṭvā seeing, hṛṣṭāḥ happy, kumāram young Angada, madhūni honey, abhyayācanta sought permission.

The honey-coloured monkeys felt happy on seeing the Madhuvanam and sought Angada's permission to drink honey.
tataḥ kumārastān vṛddhān jāmbavatpramukhān kapīn.

anumānya dadau tēṣāṅ visargaṅ madhubhikṣaṇē৷৷5.61.12৷৷


tataḥ then, kumāraḥ young Angada, vṛddhān old, tān him, jāmbavatpramukhān chief of monkeys Jambavan, kapīn monkey, anumānya permitting, tēṣām them, madhubhakṣaṇē to drink honey, nisargam leave, dadau gave.

Young Angada asked old Jambavan's permission for the vanaras to drink honey and Jambavan permitted them.
tataścānumatā ssarvē samprahṛṣṭā vanaukasaḥ.

muditāḥ prēritāścāpi pranṛtyantō.bhavaṅstadā৷৷5.61.13৷৷


tataḥ then, sarvē all, vanaukasaḥ forest-dwellers, monkeys, anumatāḥ having been permitted, samprahṛṣṭāḥ very happily, tadā then, prēritāḥ motivated, muditāḥ rejoiced, pranṛtyantaḥ started dancing, abhavan they.

Permitted thus to drink honey the forest-dwelling monkeys were motivated. They rejoiced very happily and started dancing.
gāyanti kēcitpraṇamanti kēcinnṛtyanti kēcitprahasanti kēcit.

patanti kēcidvicaranti kēcitlpavanti kēcitpralapanti kēcit৷৷5.61.14৷৷


kēcit some, gāyanti sang, kēcit some, praṇamanti prostrated, kēcit few, nṛtyanti danced,
kēcit some, prahasanti laughed, kēcit while others, patanti fell down, kēcit some, vicaranti roamed, kēcit few, plavanti jumped up, kēcit some, pralapanti jumped up.

Some sang, some prostrated on the ground, some danced, while some laughed, some jumped from the tree, some roamed about and some jumped up and down.
parasparaṅ kēcidupāśrayantē parasparaṅ kēcidupākramantē.

parasparaṅ kēcidupabruvantē parasparaṅ kēcidupāramantē৷৷5.61.15৷৷


kēcit some, parasparam to one another, upāśrayantē comforted, kēcit some, parasparam one another, upākramantē held, kēcit some, parasparam one another, upabruvantē exchanged secrets, kēcit some, parasparam to one another, upāramantē entertained.

While some supported one another, some held each other, some exchanged secrets with one another, some entertained one another.
drumāddrumaṅ kēcidabhidravantē kṣitau nagāgrānnipatanti kēcit.

mahītalātkēcidudīrṇavēgā mahādrumāgrāṇyabhisampatanti৷৷5.61.16৷৷


kēcit some, drumāt from tree, drumam to another tree, abhidravantē ran, kēcit some, nagāgrāt from the top of tree jumped down, kṣitau broken, nipatanti fell down, kēcit some, udīrṇavēgāḥ very swift ones, mahātalāt from the huge trees, mahādrumāgrāṇi from the top of trees, abhisampatanti fell down.

While some ran from one tree to another, some jumped down from broken branches, and some swift-footed ones fell down from the top of trees.
gāyantamanyaḥ prahasannupaiti hasantamanyaḥ prarudannupaiti.

rudantamanyaḥ praṇudannupaiti nudantamanyaḥ praṇadannupaiti৷৷5.61.17৷৷


gāyantam singing, anyaḥ others, prahanam laughing, upaiti on who fell, hasantam laughing, anyaḥ others, prarudan went roaring aloud, upaiti fell, rudantam roaring, anyaḥ others, praṇudan
pushing, upaiti fell on others, nudantam encouraged to do some thing, anyaḥ others, praṇadan shouting, upaiti fell over.

While one was singing, others approached him laughing; while some were laughing others fell on them laughing excessively. While some were roaring, others went pushing them down. While some were encouraged to do something others shouted at them.
samākulaṅ tatkapisainyamāsīnmadhuprasānōtkaṭasattvacēṣṭam.

na cātra kaścinna babhūva mattō na cātra kaścinna babhūva tṛptaḥ৷৷5.61.18৷৷


madhuprasānōtkaṭasattvacēṣṭam lost control due to drinking honey-wine, tat that, kapisainyam army of monkeys, samākulam collected together, āsīt quietly seated, atra there, kaścit not even one, mattaḥ intoxicated, na babhūva not there, iti na not only this, atra there, kaścit none, tṛptaḥ satisfied, na babhūva iti na not there like that.

The army of monkeys had lost control over their bodies due to drinking of honey-wine. Not even one was quietly seated there. Not even one was not intoxicated. Not only that, none were satisfied.
tatō vanaṅ tatparibhakṣyamāṇaṅ drumāṅśca vidhvaṅsitapatrapuṣpān.

samīkṣya kōpāddhadhivakranāmā nivārayāmāsa kapiḥ kapīṅstān৷৷5.61.19৷৷


tataḥ that, dadhivaktranāmā named Dadhimukha, kapiḥ monkey, paribhakṣyamāṇam drank all the honey-wine, tat that, vanam garden, vidhvaṅsitapatrapuṣpān leaves, flowers, drumāṅśca and trees, samīkṣya seeing, kōpāt in anger, tān kapīn the monkeys, nivārayāmāsa asked them to stop and get out.

Beholding the destruction wrought by the vanaras to the garden, trees, leaves and flowers, and having drunk all the honey, Dadhimukha angrily asked them to stop and get out.
sa taiḥ pravṛddhaiḥ paribhartsyamānō vanasya gōptā harivīravṛddhaḥ.

cakāra bhūyō matimugratējā vanasya rakṣāṅ prati vānarēbhyaḥ৷৷5.61.20৷৷


pravṛddhaiḥ by the elderly, taiḥ by both, paribhartsyamānaḥ reprimanded, vanasya garden's, gōptā care-taker, harivīravṛddhaḥ old monkey leader, ugratējāḥ powerful one, vānarēbhyaḥ by vanaras, vanasya garden's, rakṣāṅprati to protect, bhūyaḥ again, matim in his mind, cakāra thought over.

The elderly Dadhimukha who was the powerful protector of the garden reprimanded them and devised yet again a plan to protect it.
uvāca kāṅścitparuṣāṇi dhṛṣṭamasaktamanyāṅśca talairjaghāna.

samētya kaiścitkalahaṅ cakāra tathaiva sāmnōpajagāma kāṅścit৷৷5.61.21৷৷


kāṅścit to some, paruṣāṇi in harsh words, uvāca spoken, anyāṅśca to others, asaktam not to say, talaiḥ with the palm of the hand, dhṛṣṭam slapped, jaghāna hind part, samētya with good words, kaiścit with some, kalaham quarrel, cakāra made, tathaiva in the same way, kāṅścit some, sāmnā approached, upajagāma in a conciliatory manner.

He spoke harshly to some, to others he asked not to talk, some he slapped on the hind part with the palm of his hand. To some he spoke pleasantly and with some he quarrelled. And to others he spoke in a conciliatory manner.
sa tairmadātsaṅparivārya vākyairbhalāccha tēna prativāryamāṇaiḥ.

pradharṣitastyaktabhayai ssamētya prakṛṣyatē cāpyanavēkṣya dōṣam৷৷5.61.22৷৷


tairmadāt in their drunkenness, aprativāryavākyaiḥ speaking in abusive language, tēna by them, balāt by their strength, prativāryamāṇaiḥ retaliated, tyaktabhayaiḥ devoid of fear, taiḥ those, pradharṣitaḥ roared, saḥ that, dōṣaṅ ca mistakes only, anavēkṣya not seeing, samyē held, prakṛṣyatē ca pulled.

In their drunkenness they were using abusive language and with their strength they retaliated without fear. They invaded without considering their mistakes. They caught hold of Dadhimukha and pulled him.
nakhaistudantō daśanairdaśanta stalaiśca pādaiśca samāpayantaḥ.

madātkapiṅ taṅ kapaya ssamagrā mahāvanaṅ nirviṣayaṅ ca cakruḥ৷৷5.61.23৷৷


samagrāḥ all of them together, kapayaḥ that monkey, madāt in their drunkenness, nakhaiḥ with nails, tudantaḥ scratched, daśanaiḥ with teeth, daśantaḥ bitten, talaiśca with palms, pādaiśca legs, taṅ kapim the monkeys, samāpayantaḥ getting together, mahāvanam great garden, nirviṣayam completely, cakruḥ looted.

In their drunkenness some monkeys scratched Dadhimukha violently with their nails, some bit him with their teeth and others slapped and kicked him with their palms and legs.Getting together they looted the garden completely.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē ēkaṣaṣṭitama ssargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfirst sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
