[Guards of Madhuvanam headed by Dadhimukha move to report to Sugriva.]

tānuvāca hariśrēṣṭhō hanumānvānararṣabhaḥ.

avyagramanasō yūyaṅ madhu sēvata vānarāḥ৷৷5.62.1৷৷

ahamāvārayiṣyāmi yuṣmākaṅ paripanthinaḥ.


hariśrēṣṭhaḥ foremost of the monkeys, vānararṣabhaḥ bull among vanaras, hanumān Hanuman, tān them, uvāca spoke, vānarāḥ vanaras, yūyam looking at, avyagramanasaḥ devoid of any fear in your mind, madhu honey, sēvata take, aham I, yuṣmākam those, paripanthinaḥ who object to your action, avāyiṣyāmi will prevent.

Hanuman, the foremost of the monkeys, bull among vanaras said, 'Enjoy the honey devoid of any fear. I shall prevent those who object to your action'.
śrutvā hanumatō vākyaṅ harīṇāṅ pravarō.ṅgadaḥ৷৷5.62.2৷৷

pratyuvāca prasannātmā pibantu harayō madhu.


hanumataḥ Hanuman, vākyam these words, śrutvā hearing, harīṇām to the monkeys, pravaraḥ distinguished, aṅgadaḥ Angada, prasannātmā very pleased, pratyuvāca replied, harayaḥ vanaras, pibantu you may drink.

Pleased with Hanuman's words, the distinguished Angada permitted the monkeys to drink.
avaśyaṅ kṛtakāryasya vākyaṅ hanumatō mayā৷৷5.62.3৷৷

akāryamapi kartavyaṅ kimaṅga punarīdṛśam.


kṛtakāryasya one who has accomplished the task, hanumataḥ Hanuman, vākyam these words,
akāryamapi tells not to do, mayā by me, avaśyam surely, kartavyam what is to be done, īdṛśaṅ punaḥ when he has spoken again, kimaṅga what to say?

Even if Hanuman, the achiever, forbids me to do something, I will do it. And now when he has permitted you, why hesitate ?
aṅgadasya mukhācchrutvāvacanaṅ vānararṣabhāḥ৷৷5.62.4৷৷

sādhusādhviti saṅhṛṣṭā vānarāḥ pratyapūjayan.


vānararṣabhāḥ bulls among vanaras, vānarāḥ vanaras, aṅgadasya Angada's, mukhāt from the mouth, vacaḥ spoken, śrutvā having heard, saṅhṛṣṭāḥ very happy, sādhu sādhviti good words, pratyapūjayan praised.

Having heard the words that came from Angada's mouth, the bulls among vanaras praised him for his generous approval.
pūjayitvāṅgadaṅ sarvē vānarā vānararṣabham৷৷5.62.5৷৷

jagmurmadhuvanaṅ yatra nadīvēga iva drumam.


sarvē all, vānarā vanaras, vānararṣabham to bull among vanaras, aṅgadam to Angada, pūjayitvā having praised, madhuvanam Madhuvanam, yatra there, nadīvēgaḥ fast flowing river, drumam iva like tree, jagmuḥ went.

The vanaras praised Angada, the bull among vanaras and went to Madhuvanam swiftly like a fast-flowing river going to uproot a tree.
tē praviṣṭā madhuvanaṅ pālānākramya vīryataḥ৷৷5.62.6৷৷

atisargācca paṭavō dṛṣṭvā śrutvā ca maithilīm.

papussarvē madhu tadā rasavatphalamādaduḥ৷৷5.62.7৷৷


maithilīm Mythili, dṛṣṭvā having seen, śrutvā heard, atisargācca overjoyed with success,
madhuvanam Madhuvanam, praviṣṭāḥ entered, pālān guards, vīryataḥ violently, ākramya attacked, tadā then, madhu Madhu, papuḥ drank, rasavat tasty, phalam fruits, ādadu: ate.

Overjoyed at the news of Mythili, being seen, the vanaras entered Madhuvanam and attacked the guards violently, drank the honey and ate the tasty fruits.
utpatya ca tatassarvē vanapālān samāgatān.

tāḍayanti sma śataśa ssaktānmadhuvanē tadā৷৷5.62.8৷৷


tadā then, sarvē all, madhuvanē in Madhuvanam, śataśaḥ in many ways, saktān vanaras, samāgatān came together, vanapālān guards protecting the garden, utpatya risen up, tataḥ then, tāḍayanti sma struck.

All the vanaras collected together, entered the Madhuvanam and attacked in many ways the guards protecting the garden.
madhūni drōṇamātrāṇi bāhubhiḥ parigṛhya tē.

pibanti sahitā ssarvē nighnanti sma tathāparē৷৷5.62.9৷৷


tē sarvē all of them, bāhubhiḥ many, drōṇamātrāṇi of huge size (large containers made of leather, a drona is a measure of two litres), madhūni honey, parigṛhya took hold of, sahitāḥ together, pibanti drinking, aparē others, nighnanti sma were preventing.

All of them now gathered at one place and drank honey from large containers. Others were busy preventing the guards.
kēcitpītvā pravidhyanti madhūni madhupiṅgalāḥ.

madhūcchiṣṭēna kēcicca jagmuranyōnyamutkaṭāḥ৷৷5.62.10৷৷


madhupiṅgalāḥ honey-coloured, kēcit some, madhūni honey, pītvā were drinking, pravidhyanti throwing, kēcicca some, madhūcchiṣṭhēna chunks of honey combs, utkaṭāḥ intoxicated, anyōnyam with each other, jagmuḥ went about.

The honey-coloured monkeys drank honey. Some threw large chunks of honey combs after drinking and some went about intoxicated.
aparē vṛkṣamūlē tu śākhāṅ gṛhya vyavasthitāḥ.

atyarthaṅ ca madaglānāḥ parṇānyāstīrya śēratē৷৷5.62.11৷৷


aparē some others, śākhām branches of trees, gṛhya taking, vṛkṣamūlē at the root of trees, vyavasthitāḥ stayed, atyartham on account of drinking, madaglānāḥ sweet drinks, parṇāni leaves, āstīrya spreading, śēratē lay down.

Some took branches of trees and rested at the root of trees. Some totally languid lay down spreading leaves due to drinking of sweet drinks.
unmattabhūtāḥ plavagā madhumattāśca hṛṣṭavat.

kṣipanti ca tathānyōnyaṅ skhalanti ca tathā.parē৷৷5.62.12৷৷


madhumattāḥ by drinking of honey, plavagāḥ vanaras, unmattabhūtāḥ like mad people, hṛṣṭavat joyfully, anyōnyam each other, kṣipanti pushing each other, aparē others, skhalanti ca were shaking unsteady.

Intoxicated with drink, some behaved like mad people, some pushed others senselessly and some were unsteady and shaky.
kēcit kṣvēlāṅ prakurvanti kēcit kūjanti hṛṣṭavat.

harayōmadhunā mattāḥ kēcitsuptā mahītalē৷৷5.62.13৷৷


kēcit some, kṣvēlām prakurvanti roared, kēcit some, hṛṣṭavat happy, kūjanti cooing like the birds, madhunā by the drinking of honey, mattāḥ drowsy, kēcit harayaḥ some vanaras, mahītalē on the ground, suptāḥ slept.

Some roared, some warbled happily, some felt drowsy, drinking honey and some
dropped off to sleep on the ground.
kṛtvā kēciddhasantyanyē kēcitkurvanti cētarat.

kṛtvā kēcidvadantyanyē kēcidbudhyanti cētarat৷৷5.62.14৷৷


kēcit some, kṛtvā having done, hasanti laughing, anyē others, kēcit some, itarat different, kurvanti doing, kēcit some, kṛtvā having done, vadanti were telling others, anyē others, kēcit some, itarat something else, budhyanti thought of doing.

Some made others laugh, some provoked others and some thought of doing something else having got over the intoxication.
yē.pyatra madhupālā ssyuḥ prēṣyā dadhimukhasya tu.

tē.pi tairvānarairbhīmaiḥ pratiṣiddhā diśō gatāḥ৷৷5.62.15৷৷


atra there, dadhimukhasya Dadhimukha's, prēṣyāḥ engaged, madhupālāḥ guards of Madhuvanam, yē those, syuḥ to cover, tē.pi were also, bhīmaiḥ fierce, vānaraiḥ vanaras, pratiṣiddhāḥ driven away, diśaḥ in all directions, gatāḥ went.

All the guards engaged in protecting the garden were driven away in all directions by the fierce vanaras.
jānubhistu prakṛṣṭāśca dēvamārgaṅ pradarśitāḥ.

abruvan paramōdvignā gatvā dadhimukhaṅ vacaḥ৷৷5.62.16৷৷


jānubhiḥ knees, prakṛṣṭāḥ drawn forth, dēvamārgam towards the path of gods, pradarśitāḥ exhibiting, paramōdvignāḥ greatly disturbed, dadhimukham to Dadhimukha, gatvā having gone, vacaḥ these words, abruvan said.

Some were dragged on their knees and tossed up. Some monkeys exhibited their private parts, showing indecent behaviour. Dadhimukha, highly disturbed at this, said:
hanūmatā dattavarairhataṅ madhuvanaṅ balāt.

vayaṅ ca jānubhiḥ kṛṣṭā dēvamārgaṅ ca darśitāḥ৷৷5.62.17৷৷


hanūmatā Hanuman, dattavarairhataṅ by whom they were permitted, vayaṅ ca and us, madhuvanaṅ Madhuvanam, jānubhiḥ knees, balāt forcefully, kṛṣṭā holding, dēvamārgaṅ ca dragged to the private parts, darśitāḥ and showed.

Permitted by Hanuman (to enter Madhuvanam and drink), they dragged one another forcefully tossed up on their knees showing their private parts.
tatō dadhimukha: kruddhō vanapastatra vānaraḥ.

hataṅ madhuvanaṅ śrutvā sāntvayāmāsa tān harīn৷৷5.62.18৷৷


tataḥ then, tatra there, vanapaḥ guardian of the garden, dadhimukha: Dadhimukha, vānara: vanara, kruddhaḥ furious, madhuvanam Madhuvanam, hatam destoyed, śrutvā having heard, harīn vanaras, sāntvayāmāsa with soothing words.

Then Dadhimukha, the guardian of the garden became furious on the vanaras. Having heard from the guards that the garden was destroyed, he said soothing words to them.
ihāgacchata gacchāmō vānarān baladarpitān.

balēna vārayiṣyāmō madhu bhakṣayatō vayam৷৷5.62.19৷৷


iha here, āgaccata come, gaccāmaḥ will go, vayam we, baladarpitān proud of their power, madhu Madhu, bhakṣayataḥ consume honey, vānarān vanaras, balēna forcibly, vārayiṣyāmaḥ will prevent them.

"Come, we will all go there to Madhuvanam and prevent forcibly the vanaras who have consumed honey proud of their power.
śrutvā dadhimukhasyēdaṅ vacanaṅ vānararṣabhāḥ.

punarvīrā madhuvanaṅ tēnaiva sahasā yayuḥ৷৷5.62.20৷৷


vīrāḥ heroes, vānararṣabhāḥ bull among vanaras, dadhimukhasya Dadhimukha's, idam this kind of, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, sahasā quickly, tēnaiva along with him, punaḥ again, madhuvanam Madhuvanam, yayuḥ went.

"The heroes, bulls among vanaras, heard Dadhimukha and quickly entered Madhuvanam along with him.
madhyē caiṣāṅ dadhimukhaḥ pragṛhya tarasā tarum.

samabhyadhāvadvēgēna tē ca sarvē plavaṅgamāḥ৷৷5.62.21৷৷


ēṣām their, madhyē way, dadhimukhaḥ Dadhimukha, tarasā energetic, tarum tree, pragṛhya taking up, vēgēna swiftly, samabhyadhāvat following, tē they, sarvē all, plavaṅgamāḥ ca the leaping vanaras.

On the way, the energetic Dadhimukha took up a tree and ran to the leaping vanaras swiftly with guards following him.
tē śilāḥ pādapāṅścāpi parvatāṅścāpi vānarāḥ.

gṛhītvā৷৷bhyagaman kruddhā yatra tē kapikuñjarāḥ৷৷5.62.22৷৷


tē vānarāḥ those vanaras, kruddhāḥ furious, śilāḥ rocks, pādapāṅścāpi also trees, parvatāṅścāpi even mountains, gṛhītvā took up, tē they, kapikuñjarāḥ elephant of monkeys, yatra there, abhyagaman went.

The furious vanara guards lifted rocks, trees and even mountains and went behind Dadhimukha the elephant among the vanaras.
tē svāmivacanaṅ vīrā hṛdayēṣvavasajya tat.

tvarayā hyabhyadhāvanta sālatālaśilāyudhāḥ৷৷5.62.23৷৷


vīrāḥ heroic, tē they, tat that, svāmivacanam leader's words, hṛdayēṣu in their heart, avasajya rushed, sālatālaśilāyudhāḥ Sala, Tala trees as weapons, tvarayā at once, abhyadhāvanta ran.

The heroic vanaras held Sala and Tala trees and rushed at once keeping their leader's words in mind.
vṛkṣasthāṅśca talasthāṅśca vānarān baladarpitān.

abhyakrāmaṅstatō vīrāḥ pālāstatra sahasraśaḥ৷৷5.62.24৷৷


tataḥ then, vīrāḥ heroic, pālāḥ guards, sahasraśaḥ in thousands, vṛkṣasthāṅśca on the trees, talasthāṅśca under the trees, baladarpitān proud of their power, vānarān vanaras, abhyakrāman attacked.

Then the heroic guards in their thousands fell on the vanaras proud of their power on and under the tala trees.
atha dṛṣṭvā dadhimukhaṅ kruddhaṅ vānarapuṅgavāḥ.

abhyadhāvanta vēgēna hanumatpramukhāstadā৷৷5.62.25৷৷


atha and then, hanumatpramukhāḥ leader Hanuman, vānarapuṅgavāḥ foremost of vanaras, tadā then, dadhimukham Dadhimukha's, kruddham fury, dṛṣṭvā having seen, vēgēna swiftly, abhyadhāvanta went there.

Having seen the fury of Dadhimukha, Hanuman the leader of the vanaras went to him swiftly.
taṅ savṛkṣaṅ mahābāhumāpatantaṅ mahābalam.

āryakaṅ prāharattatra bāhubhyāṅ kupitō.ṅgadaḥ৷৷5.62.26৷৷


kupitaḥ angry, aṅgadaḥ Angada, savṛkṣam with trees, mahābāhum strong-armed, mahābalam powerful, āpatantam coming, tam him, āryakam tatra there, bāhubhyām with both hands, prāharat
clasped tightly.

Seeing the revered, powerful and strong-armed Dadhimukha rushing to him, the angry Angada caught him with both hands tightly.
madāndhaśca na vēdainamāryakō.yaṅ mamēti saḥ.

athainaṅ niṣpipēṣāśu vēgavadvasudhātalē৷৷5.62.27৷৷


saḥ he, madāndhaśca blinded by arrogance, ayam this, mama my, āryakaḥ revered, iti this, ēnam therefore, na vēda not understnding that (I am his granduncle), atha now, ēnam therefore, vasudhātalē on the floor, vēgavat forcibly, āśu him, niṣpipēṣa pushed.

"Blinded by arrogance, the prince pushed him (Dadhimukha) on the floor forcibly, forgetting that he was his revered granduncle.
sa bhagnabāhūrubhujō vihvalaśśōṇitōkṣitaḥ.

mumōha sahasā vīrō muhūrtaṅ kapikuñjaraḥ৷৷5.62.28৷৷


bhagnabāhūrubhujaḥ with shoulders and arms broken, vihvalaḥ battered, śōṇitōkṣitaḥ body drenched in blood, saḥ he, Dadhimukha, vīraḥ a hero, kapikuñjaraḥ elephant among monkeys, sahasā at once, muhūrtam in a moment, mumōha lost conciousness.

The heroic Dadhimukha, an elephant among monkeys, with his shoulders and arms broken, and body drenched in blood lost his consciousness instantly.
sa samāśvasya sahasā saṅkṛddhō rājamātulaḥ.

vānarānvārayāmāsa daṇḍēna madhumōhitān৷৷5.62.29৷৷


rājamātulaḥ maternal uncle of the king, saḥ he, sahasā at once, samāśvasya coming out of unconscious state, saṅkṛddhaḥ furious, madhumōhitān deluded by drinking, vānarān vanaras, daṇḍēna with a stick, vārayāmāsa chased.

At once Dadhimukha, the maternal uncle of the king became conscious and chased with a stick the intoxicated vanaras.
sa kathañcidvimuktasstairvānarairvānararṣabhaḥ.

uvācaikāntamāśritya bhṛtyān svān samupāgatān৷৷5.62.30৷৷


taiḥ they, vānaraiḥ vanaras, kathañcit with great difficulty, vimuktaḥ escaped, saḥ he, Dadhimukha, vānararṣabhaḥ bull among monkeys, ēkāntam secluded, āśritya reached, samupāgatān returned, svān them, bhṛtyān servants, uvāca said.

Escaping from the vanaras with great difficulty, Dadhimukha, a bull among monkeys, repaired to a secluded place and said to his servants:
ētē tiṣṭhantu gacchāmō bhartā nō yatra vānaraḥ.

sugrīvō vipulagrīvaḥ saha rāmēṇa tiṣṭhati৷৷5.62.31৷৷


ētē let them, tiṣṭhantu stay, naḥ our, bhartā king, vānaraḥ vanaras, vipulagrīvaḥ one with broad neck, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, yatra there, rāmēṇa saha with Rama, tiṣṭhati will be staying, gaccāmaḥ let us go.

"Let them stay here. Our broad-necked king Sugriva will be there with Rama. Let us go to him.
sarvaṅ caivāṅgadē dōṣaṅ śrāvayiṣyāmi pārthivē.

amarṣī vacanaṅ śrutvā ghātayiṣyati vānarān৷৷5.62.32৷৷


aṅgadē Angada, sarvam all, dōṣam mistakes, pārthivē to the king, śrāvayiṣyāmi will let him know, vacanam these words, śrutvā having heard, amarṣi very furious, vānarān vanaras, ghātayiṣyati will put an end.

iṣṭaṅ madhuvanaṅ hyētatpārthivasya mahātmanaḥ.

pitṛpaitāmahaṅ divyaṅ dēvairapi durāsadam৷৷5.62.33৷৷


pitṛpaitāmaham from grandfather and father, divyam wonderful, dēvairapi even for devatas, durāsadam forbidden, ētat this, madhuvanam Madhuvanam, mahātmanaḥ great self, pārthivasya to the king, iṣṭaṅ hi very dear.

'Madhuvan has come down to us from our forefather's time. Dear to the king, its entry is prohibited even to the gods.
sa vānarānimān sarvān madhulubdhān gatāyuṣaḥ.

ghātayiṣyati daṇḍēna sugrīvassasuhṛjjanān৷৷5.62.34৷৷


saḥ sugrīvaḥ that Sugriva, madhulubdhān those greedy for honey, gatāyuṣaḥ doomed, sasuhṛjjanān their friends, imān these, sarvān all, vānarān vanaras, daṇḍēna with a stick, ghātayiṣyati will be beaten.

'Sugriva will chase all the vanaras and their friends greedy for honey. They will be punished with a stick. They are doomed'.
vadhyā hyētē durātmānō nṛpājñāparibhāvinaḥ.

amarṣaprabhavō rōṣassaphalō nō bhaviṣyati৷৷5.62.35৷৷


nṛpājñāparibhāvinaḥ who have disobeyed the king's order, ētē they, durātmanaḥ evil-minded, vadhyāḥ hi indeed deserve to be killed, amarṣaprabhavaḥ forbearance king, naḥ rōṣaḥ our fury, saphalaḥ will result in success, bhaviṣyati will be.

'Indeed those evil-minded ones who have disobeyed the king's order deserve to be killed.That way our fury and forbearance will result in success'.
ēvamuktvā dadhimukhō vanapālānmahābalaḥ.

jagāma sahasōtpatya vanapālaissamanvitaḥ৷৷5.62.36৷৷


mahābalaḥ very powerful, dadhimukhaḥ Dadhimukha, vanasālān garden protectors, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, sahasā at once, vanapālaiḥ garden guards, samanvitaḥ along with them, utpatya rising to the sky, jagāma went.

Powerful Dadhimukha having said that to the guardians of the garden rose up to the sky and went off with them.
nimēṣāntaramātrēṇa sa hi prāptō vanālayaḥ.

sahasrāṅśusutō dhīmān sugrīvō yatra vānaraḥ৷৷5.62.37৷৷


saḥ he, vanālayaḥ forest-dweller, sahasrāṅśusutaḥ to the son of Sun-god, dhīmān wise, sugrīvaḥ vānaraḥ to the vanara Sugriva, yatra there, nimēṣāntaramātrēṇa in a moment's time, prāptaḥ reached.

In a moment, Dadhimukha reached the place where wise Sugriva, the son of Sun-god was there
rāmaṅ ca lakṣmaṇaṅ caiva dṛṣṭvā sugrīvamēva ca.

samapratiṣṭhāṅ jagatīmākāśānnipapāta ha৷৷5.62.38৷৷


rāmaṅ ca Rama, lakṣmaṇaṅ caiva and also Lakshmana, sugrīvamēva ca and also Sugriva, dṛṣṭvā seeing, ākāśāt from the sky, samapratiṣṭhām even, jagatīm ground, nipapāta landed.

Seeing Rama, Lakshmana and also Sugriva from the sky he landed on an even ground.
sannipatya mahāvīryassarvaistai: parivāritaḥ.

harirdadhimukhaḥ pālaiḥ pālānāṅ paramēśvaraḥ৷৷5.62.39৷৷

sa dīnavadanō bhūtvā kṛtvā śirasi cāñjalim.

sugrīvasya śubhau mūrdhnā caraṇau patyapīḍayat৷৷5.62.40৷৷


sarvaiḥ all, taiḥ pālaiḥ those guards, parivāritaḥ the servants, pālānām king, paramēśvaraḥ lord, hariḥ of monkeys, mahāvīryaḥ great hero, saḥ dadhimukhaḥ that Dadhimukha, dīnavadanaḥ with a painful expression on the face, śirasi head bowed down, añjalim salutations with folded hands, kṛtvā having offered, sannipatya surrounded by, sugrīvasya Sugriva, śubhē auspicious, caraṇau feet, mūrdhnā touching with his forehead, patyapīḍayat painful obeisance.

Dadhimukha, a great hero and king of the guards protecting Madhuvanam surrounded by his servants, with a sad expression on his face offered painful obeisance with folded hands bowing down his forehead at the feet of Sugriva.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē dviṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtysecond sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
