[Description of the aerial car -- Pushpaka.]

sa vēśmajālaṅ balavān dadarśa

vyāsaktavaiḍūryasuvarṇajālam.

yathā mahat prāvṛṣi mēghajālaṅ

vidyutpinaddhaṅ savihaṅgajālam৷৷5.7.1৷৷


balavān powerful, saḥ he, vyāsaktavaiḍūryasuvarṇajālam fitted with golden lattices encrusted with vaidurya, prāvṛṣi in the rainy season, vidyutpinaddham with streaks of lightning, savihaṅgajālam with flocks of birds, mahat great, mēghajālaṅ yathā like the abode of clouds, vēśmajālam conglomeration of houses, dadarśa saw.

Powerful Hanuman beheld the conglomeration of buildings with golden lattices encrusted with vaidurya, with flocks of birds comparable to a complex of clouds pierced by lightning during rainy season.
nivēśanānāṅ vividhāśca śālāḥ

pradhānaśaṅkhāyudhacāpaśālāḥ.

manōharāścāpi punarviśālāḥ

dadarśa vēśmādriṣu candraśālāḥ৷৷5.7.2৷৷


nivēśanānām of the houses, vividhāḥ several, śālāḥ halls, pradhānaśaṅkhāyudhacāpaśālāḥ for storing valuable conches, weapons and bows, punaḥ again, vēśmādriṣu on top of attics on the houses, manōharāḥ delightful, viśālāḥ spacious, candraśālāḥ terraces, dadarśa saw.

Attached to the spacious halls of the houses, were store-houses for valuable conches, weapons, bows and arrows. On the top of the attics on these mansions,
were large and delightful terraces open to the Moon.
gṛhāṇi nānāvasurājitāni

dēvāsuraiścāpi supūjitāni.

sarvaiśca dōṣaiḥ parivarjitāni

kapirdadarśa svabalārjitāni৷৷5.7.3৷৷


kapiḥ monkey, nānāvasurājitāni various kinds treasures, dēvāsuraiścāpi even by gods and demons, supūjitāni worshipped by, sarvaiḥ by all, dōṣaiḥ defects, parivarjitāni devoid, svabalārjitāni earned by his might, gṛhāṇi houses, dadarśa saw.

The monkey saw numerous kinds of treasures, cherished by gods and demons, which were won by Ravana's might.
tāni prayatnābhisamāhitāni

mayēna sākṣādiva nirmitāni.

mahītalē sarvaguṇōttarāṇi

dadarśa laṅkādhipatērgṛhāṇi৷৷5.7.4৷৷


tāni those, prayatnābhisamāhitāni collected with great care and effort, sākṣāt directly, mayēna by Maya, nirmitānīva as though built, mahītalē on earth, sarvaguṇōttarāṇi of excellent quality, laṅkādhipatēḥ of the lord of Lanka, gṛhāṇi mansions, dadarśa saw.

The mansions of the lord of Lanka built with great care and effort on earth were by all means excellent and appeared as though built personally by Maya (the divine architect well-known for magical skills).
tatō dadarśōchracitamēgharūpaṅ

manōharaṅ kāñcanacārurūpam.

rakṣō.dhipasyātmabalānurūpaṅ

gṛhōttamaṅ hyapratirūparūpam৷৷5.7.5৷৷


tataḥ then, uchracitamēgharūpam appearing like a towering cloud, manōharam soul-captivating, kāñcanacārurūpam golden palace possessing splendour of molten gold, apratirūparūpam matchless, ātmabalānurūpam worthy of the might of Ravana, rakṣōdhipasya of the lord of demons, gṛhōttamam magnificent palace, dadarśa saw.

Hanuman beheld the magnificent and soul-captivating palace possessing the splendour of molten gold. Of matchless beauty, it looked like a towering cloud worthy of the might of Ravana, the lord of ogresses.
mahītalē svargamiva prakīrṇaṅ

śriyā jvalantaṅ bahuratnakīrṇam.

nānātarūṇāṅ kusumāvakīrṇaṅ

girērivāgraṅ rajasāvakīrṇam৷৷5.7.6৷৷


mahītalē on earth, prakīrṇam scattered, svargamiva like heaven, śriyā with splendour, jvalantam while glittering, bahuratnakīrṇam with many gems, nānātarūṇām of all kinds of trees, kusumāvakīrṇam scattered with flowers, rajasā with dust, avakīrṇam covered, girēḥ mountain, agramiva like the peak.

It appeared splendid like a scattered piece of heaven on earth, glittering with countless gems. It looked like a mountain peak covered with pollen of flowers dropped from all kinds of trees.
nārīpravēkairiva dīpyamānaṅ

taṭidbhirambhōdavadarcyamānam.

haṅsapravēkairiva vāhyamānaṅ

śriyā yutaṅ khē sukṛtāṅ vimānam৷৷5.7.7৷৷


nārīpravēkaiḥ by resplendent women,dīpyamānamiva as if lit up,taṭidbhiḥ with lightning, ambhōdavat like a rain-cloud, arcyamānam worshipped, haṅsapravēkaiḥ borne by swans, vāhyamānam iva as if being drawn by, śriyā auspicious, yutam endowed, khē in the sky, sukṛtām royal, vimānam aerial chariot.

The aerial chariot was lit up by resplendent women just as a rain-cloud dazzles with flashes of lightning. It was auspicious, worthy of worship. It looked as if it was drawn by royal swans in the sky.
yathā nagāgraṅ bahudhātucitraṅ

yathā nabhaśca grahacandracitram.

dadarśayuktīkṛtamēghacitraṅ

vimānaratnaṅ bahuratnacitram৷৷5.7.8৷৷


yuktīkṛtamēghacitram mass of colourful clouds, grahacandracitram looking colourful with planets and Moon, nabhaḥ yathā like the sky, bahuratnacitram colourful on account of gems encrusted, bahudhātucitram colourful on account of many minerals, nagāgraṅ yathā like the peak of a mountain, vimānaratnam jewel of a chariot, dadarśa saw.

A jewel among aerial chariots, it looked colourful with many gems beset. It appeared like the summit of a mountain decorated with the colours of minerals, like the sky bespangled with planets and the Moon and like a mass of multicoloured clouds adorned by a rainbow.
mahī kṛtā parvatarājipūrṇā

śailāḥ kṛtā vṛkṣavitānapūrṇāḥ.

vṛkṣāḥ kṛtāḥ puṣpavitānapūrṇāḥ

puṣpaṅ kṛtaṅ kēsarapatrapūrṇam৷৷5.7.9৷৷


mahī earth, parvatarājipūrṇā filled with mountain ranges, kṛtā drawn, śailāḥ mountains, vṛkṣavitānapūrṇāḥ filled with a canopy of trees, kṛtāḥ drawn, vṛkṣāḥ trees, puṣpavitānapūrṇāḥ filled with a canopy of flowers, kṛtāḥ drawn on it, puṣpam flowers, kēsarapatrapūrṇam filled with petals and filaments, kṛtam drawn.

The whole earth had been picturised on it. It was filled with rows of mountains and a canopy of trees all over. The trees were filled with lovely flowers with petals and filaments drawn on them.
kṛtāni vēśmāni ca pāṇḍurāṇi

tathā supuṣpāṇyapi puṣkarāṇi.

punaśca padmāni sakēsarāṇi

dhanyāni citrāṇi tathā vanāni৷৷5.7.10৷৷


pāṇḍurāṇi white in colour, vēśmāni ca houses, kṛtāni drawn, tathā so also, supuṣpāṇi with beautiful flowers, puṣkarāṇi ca ponds also, punaśca again, sa kēsarāṇi having filaments, padmāni lotuses, tathā so also, dhanyāni complete, citrāṇi paintings, vanāni gardens.

There were pictures of mansions white in colour and pools of crystal-clear water filled with lovely flowers. There were pictures of beautiful lotuses drawn on it.
puṣpāhvayaṅ nāmavirājamānaṅ

ratnaprabhābhiśca vivardhamānam.

vēśmōttamānāmapi cōcyamānaṅ

mahākapistatra mahāvimānam৷৷5.7.11৷৷


tatra there, mahākapiḥ great vanara, puṣpāhvayam Pushpaka chariot by name, nāmavirājamānam splendid indeed, ratnaprabhābhiḥ glitter of gems, vivardhamānam glowing, vēśmōttamānāmapi of magnificent mansions, ucyamānam tall, mahāvimānam great chariot.

There, the great Hanuman indeed saw a splendid chariot called Pushpaka. It was glowing with glittering gems. Taller than the biggest mansion, it was a great chariot.
kṛtāśca vaiḍūryamayā vihaṅgāḥ

rūpyapravālaiśca tathā vihaṅgāḥ.

citrāśca nānāvasubhirbhujaṅgāḥ

jātyānurūpāsturagāḥ śubhāṅgāḥ৷৷5.7.12৷৷


vaiḍūryamayāḥ made of vaidurya, vihaṅgāḥ birds, tathā similarly, rūpyapravālaiśca made of silver and corals, vihaṅgāḥ birds, nānāvasubhiḥ with various gems, citrāḥ colourful, bhujaṅgāḥ serpents, jātyāḥ due to there good breeding, anurūpāḥ similar, śubhāṅgāḥ with auspicious limbs, turagāḥ horses, kṛtāḥ drawn.

Inside were birds made of vaidurya, silver and corals. There were colourful serpents made of various gems, and high-class horses of exquisite limbs drawn.
pravālajāmbūnadapuṣpapakṣāḥ

salīlamāvarjitajihmapakṣāḥ.

kāmasya sākṣādiva bhānti pakṣāḥ

kṛtā vihaṅgāḥ sumukhāḥ supakṣāḥ৷৷5.7.13৷৷


pravālajāmbūnadapuṣpapakṣāḥ wings engraved with corals and gold, supakṣāḥ having beautiful wings, salīlam in a sportive way, āvarjitajihmapakṣāḥ with their artificial wings bent down (tossed),
vihaṅgāḥ birds, kṛtāḥ were drawn, sākṣāt truly, kāmasya cupid's, pakṣāḥ iva like wings, bhānti seemed.

It had curved figures of birds with beautiful wings carved out of corals and gold The wings were shining as if they were really the wings of allies of Cupid, the god of love.
niyujyamānāstu gajāḥ suhastāḥ

sakēsarāścōtpalapatrahastāḥ.

babhūvadēvī ca kṛtā suhastā

lakṣmī stathā padmini padmahastā৷৷5.7.14৷৷


padmini in a lotus-pond, suhastā having beautiful hands, sakēsarāśca with filaments, utpalapatrahastāḥ blue lotuses by their trunk carried, lakṣmīḥ goddess of wealth, niyujyamānāstu stationed in place, gajāḥ elephants, tathā similarly, padmahastā holding a lotus in hand, suhastā of beautiful hand, dēvī ca goddess, kṛtā drawn, babhūva appeared.

He saw on it lotus ponds, artificial elephants with shapely trunks, offering to Laxmi who herself was a lotus, holding in her beautiful hands blue lotuses shining with filaments.
itīva tadgṛhamabhigamya śōbhanam

savismayō nagamiva cāruśōbhanam.

punaśca tatparamasugandhi sundaram

himātyayē nagamiva cārukandaram৷৷5.7.15৷৷


itīva in that way, śōbhanam auspicious, cāruśōbhanam beautifully fashioned, nagamiva like a mountain, tadgṛham that palace, abhigamya having reached, savismayaḥ wonder-struck, paramasugandhi highly fragrant, sundaram beautiful, himātyayē at the end of winter, cārukandaram having beautiful caves, nagamiva like mountain, tat that, punaśca once again.

Thus he reached the auspicious palace appearing like a beautiful mountain and stood wonder-struck. Once again he looked at that beautiful palace which appeared like a mountain with lovely caverns in spring time filled with wonderful fragrance
tataḥ sa tāṅ kapirabhipatya pūjitāṅ

caran purīṅ daśamukhabāhupālitām.

adṛśya tāṅ janakasutāṅ supūjitāṅ

suduḥkhitaḥ patiguṇavēgavarjitām৷৷5.7.16৷৷


tataḥ then, saḥ kapiḥ monkey, pūjitām worshipped, daśamukhabāhupālitām ruled by the arms of the ten-headed king, tāṅ purīm that city, abhipatya having reached, caran while moving about, supūjitām venerable, patiguṇavēgavarjitām who was deprived of the benefit of her husband's virtuous conduct, tāṅ janakasutām that Janaka's daughter Sita, adṛśya unable to find, suduḥkhitaḥ was deeply sorrowful.

Then Hanuman moved about that cherished city ruled by the strength of arms of the ten-headed king. Unable to find venerable Sita, who was deprived of the benefit of her husband's virtuous proximity, he became deeply sad.
tatastadā bahuvidhabhāvitātmanaḥ

kṛtātmanō janakasutāṅ suvartmanaḥ.

apaśyatō.bhavadatiduḥkhitaṅ manaḥ

sucakṣuṣaḥ pravicaratō mahātmanaḥ৷৷5.7.17৷৷


tataḥ from there, tadā then, bahuvidhabhāvitātmanaḥ thinking of many things in his mind, kṛtātmanaḥ of a great soul, suvartmanaḥ of the followers of righteous path, sucakṣuṣaḥ foresighted, pravicarataḥ while he moved, janakasutām daughter of Janaka, apaśyata: unable to find, mahātmanaḥ of the great self, manaḥ mind, atiduḥkhitam very distressed, abhavat became.

Unable to find Sita, the disciplined and foresighted Hanuman, who always kept the righteous path, felt distressed while moving about, his mind oppressed by all kinds of thought.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē sundarakāṇḍē saptamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the seventh sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
