Sloka & Translation

[Ravana beholds evil portents over Lanka and his chariot indicating his fall. Rama alerts Matali to be on guard. Rama and Ravana fight facing each other releasing powerful arrows. Celestial bodies and sages watch the fight eager to see the end of Ravana.]

स रथंसारथिःहृष्टंपरसैन्यप्रधर्षणम् ।

गन्धर्वनगराकारंसमुच्छ्रितपाताकिनम् ।।6.108.1।।

युक्तंपरमसम्पन्नैर्वजिभिर्हेममालिभिः ।

युद्धोपकरणैःपूर्णंपताकाध्वजमालिनीम् ।।6.108.2।।

ग्रसन्तमिवचाकाशंनादयन्तंवसुन्धराम् ।

प्रणाशंपरनैन्यानांस्वनैन्यस्यप्रहर्षणम् ।।6.108.3।।

रावणस्यरथंक्षिप्रंचोदयामाससारथिः ।


सारथिः charioteer, हृष्टः delighted, परसैन्यध्रर्षणम् which can destroy enemy's army, गन्धर्वनगराकारम् like the shape of the abode of Gandharvas, समुच्छ्रितपताकिनम् with rows of excellent flags, परमसम्पन्नैः richly endowed, हेममालिभिः gold chains, वाजिभिः horses, युक्तम् best at work, युद्धोपकरणैः well equipped with implements for war, पूर्णम् round, पताकाध्वजमालिनम् flag posts as if touching आकाशम् the sky, ग्रसन्तमिव as if filling space, वसुन्धराम् earth, नादयन्तम् resounding, परसैन्यानाम् enemy army, प्रणाशम् crushing, स्वसैन्यस्य own army, प्रहर्षणम् happy, रावणस्यरथम् Ravana's chariot, क्षिप्रम् with speed, चोदयामास drove

Delighted charioteer drove the chariot of Ravana with speed. It was of the shape of the abode of Gandharvas, capable of destroying enemy's army. It had rows of excellent flags, richly endowed, like the best piece of artwork. It was fixed with flag posts in rows touching the sky and filling space. It was yoked to excellent horses adorned with gold chains and equipped with implements for war. The earth was resounding as it was driven as if to crush the enemy's army and its own army was happy.
समापतन्तंसहसास्वनवन्तंमहाध्वजम् ।।6.108.4।।

रथंराक्षसराजस्यनरराजोददर्श ह ।

कृष्णवाजिसमायुक्तंयुक्तंरौद्रेणवर्चसा ।।6.108.5।।

दीप्यमानमिवाकाशेविमानंसूर्यवर्चसं ।

तडित्पताकागहनंदर्शितेन्द्रायुधप्रभम् ।।6.108.6।।


स्वनवन्तम् bells making sounds, महाध्वजम् huge flag post, कृष्णवाजिसमायुक्तम् yoked to dark horses, रौद्रेण enraged, वर्चसा splendor, युक्तम् fixed, आकाशे sky, दीप्यमानम् glowing, विमानमिव like the aerial chariot, सूर्यवर्चसम् bright like sun, तडित्पताकागहनम् shining in the sky, दर्शितेन्द्रायुथप्रभम् displaying its splendor, सहसा with force, आपतन्तम् cloud with water, तम् from, राक्षसराजस्य Rakshasa king's, रथम् chariot, नरराजः king of humans, ददर्श ह saw

The chariot bells fixed to the huge flag post were making sounds, yoked to dark horses, and was shining with splendor with rage. It was glowing like a bright sun in the sky displaying its splendor, like the aerial chariot. It looked like a cloud holding water, releasing water of arrows from Rakshasa king's bow. The king of humans saw this chariot.
शराधाराविमुञ्चन्तंधारासारमिवाम्बुदम् ।

तंदृष्टवामेघसङ्काशमापतन्तंरथंरिपोः ।।6.108.7।।

गिरेर्वज्राभिमृष्टस्यदीर्यतस्सदृशस्वनम् ।

विस्पारयन्वैवेगेनबालचन्द्रानतंधनुः ।।6.108.8।।

उवाचसारथिंरामंसहस्राक्षस्यमातलिम् ।


शरधाराः flow of arrows, विमुञ्चन्तम् released from, धारासारमिवा like the flow of water, अम्बुदमिव like rain water cloud, मेघसङ्काशम् from the clouds, वज्राभिमृष्टस्य struck by thunderbolt, दीर्यतः broken, गिरेः mountain, सदृशस्वनम् like sound of mountain, आपतन्तम् cloud, तम् him, रथम् chariot, दृष्टवा seeing, रामः Rama, बालचन्द्रानतम् crescent shaped like the young moon, धनुः bow, वेगेन with speed, विस्फारयन् stretching, सहस्राक्षस्यसारथिम् Indra's charioteer, मातलिम् Matali, उवाच spoke

The flow of arrows (from Ravana) released from the chariot were seen by Rama like the flow of water from rain clouds. Seeing that, Sri Rama made terrific sounds by stretching his bow to crescent shape, and it was as if a mountain struck by thunderbolt had broken and resounding and seeing Matali, charioteer of Indra, Sri Rama spoke as follows.
मातलेपश्यसम्रद्धमापतन्तंरथंरिपोः ।।6.108.9।।

यथापसव्यंपततावेगेनमहतापुनः ।

समरेहन्तुमात्मानंतथानेनकृतामतिः ।।6.108.10।।


मातले Matali, सम्रद्धम् hurrying, आपतन्तम् darting forward, रिपोः enemy, रथम् chariot, पश्य seeing, अपसव्यम् in reverse direction, महता great, वेगेन with speed, पुनः once again, पतता causing a fall, समरे in war, आत्मानम् himself, हन्तुम् to kill, यथा that way, तथानेन like that, मतिः mind, कृता strikes me

"Matali! the enemy's chariot is darting forward hurriedly. See him coming in the reverse direction with great speed once again. It strikes my mind that he is surely causing his fall."
तदप्रमादमातिष्ठन्प्रत्युद्गच्छरथंरिपोः ।

विध्वंसयितुमिच्छामिवायुर्मेघमिवोत्थितम् ।।6.108.11।।


तत् then, अप्रमादम् being alert, अतिष्ठ staying, रिपोः enemy, रथम् chariot, प्रत्युद्गच्छ towards him, वायुः wind, उत्थितम् excessively rising, मेघमिव like cloud, विध्वंसयितुम् destroy him, इ च्छामि wish to

"Being alert, you drive the chariot towards Ravana, just as wind drives the cloud in the sky, as I wish to destroy him."
अविक्लबमसम्भ्रान्तमव्यग्रहृदयेक्षणम् ।

रमशिसञ्चारनियंप्रचोदयरथंद्रुतम् ।।6.108.12।।


अविक्लबम् without confusion, असम्भ्रान्तम् without agitation, अव्यग्रहृदयेक्षणम् with steady heart and vision, रमशिसञ्चारनियतम् movement of reins controlled, रथम् chariot, द्रुतम् determined, प्रचोदय drive swiftly

"Drive the chariot swiftly without confusion, without any agitation, with steady heart and vision, controlling the movement of reins and determination.
कामं न त्वंसमाधेयःपुरन्दररथोचितः ।

युयुत्सुरहमेकाग्रःस्मारयेत्वां न शिक्ष्ये ।।6.108.13।।


पुरन्दररथोचितः driver of the chariot of one like Indra, त्वम् you, कामम् desire, न समाधेयः not required to be told, अहम् by me, एकाग्रः single pointed, युयुत्सुः wishing to fight, त्वाम् you, स्मारये remind you, न शिक्ष्ये not instruct

"You are a driver of great Indra's chariot. You are not required to be told. Wishing to fight with rapt attention, I will remind you now and then not instruct you", said Rama to Matali."
परितुष्टः स रामस्यतेनवाक्येनमातलिः ।

प्रचोदयामासरथंसुरसारथिरुत्तमः ।।6.108.14।।


उत्तमः best, सुरसारथिः charioteer of Devatas, सः he, मातलिः Matali, रामस्य Rama's, तेनवाक्येन by his words, परितुष्टः highly delighted, रथम् chariot, प्रचोदयामास started driving.

Matali, the best charioteer of the Devatas, was highly delighted at Rama's words and started driving.
अपसव्यंततःकुर्वन् रावणस्यमहारथम् ।

चक्रसम्भूतरसारावणंव्यवदूनयन् ।।6.108.15।।


ततः then, रावणस्य Ravana's, रथम् chariot, अपसव्यम् turned, कुर्वन् done, चक्रसम्भूतरजसा dust arising out of rolling wheels, रावणम् Ravana, व्यवधूनयन् shaken

Then Matali made the chariot turn round and by the dust rising from the rolling wheels of the chariot, Ravana was shaken.
ततःक्रुद्धोदशग्रीवस्ताम्रविस्फारितेक्षणः ।

रथप्रतिमुखंरामंसायकैरवधूनयत् ।।6.108.16।।


ततः then, क्रुद्धःfurious, दशग्रीवः ten headed, ताम्रविस्फारितेक्षणः coppery eyes open widely, रामम् Rama, सायकैः arrows, अवधूनयत् struck

Then furious Ravana, the ten headed Rakshasa, whose eyes turned coppery in anger, struck Rama with arrows.
धर्षणामर्षितोरामोधैर्यंरोषेणलम्भयन् ।

जग्राहसुमहावेगमैन्द्रंयुधिशरासनम् ।।6.108.17।।


धर्षणामर्षितः provoked by the assault, रामः Rama, सैन्यम् army, रोषेण perturbed, लम्भयन् of extraordinary impulse, युधि bow, सुमहावेगम् at high speed, ऐन्द्रम् Indra's, शरासनम् like sunbeams, जग्राह took up

Rama who was provoked by the assault and army was perturbed. He took up Indra's bow of extraordinary impulse and of high speed like sunbeams.
शरांश्चसुमहावेगान्सूर्यरश्मिसमप्रभान् ।

तदुपोढुंमहद्युद्धमन्योन्यवधकाङ्क्षिणोः ।।6.108.18।।

परस्पराभिमुखयोर्दृप्तयोरिवसिंहयोः ।


सुमहावेगान् of very high speed, सूर्यरश्मिसमप्रभान् glowing in radiance like the sun's rays, शरान् च arrows, अन्योन्यवधकाङ्क्षिणोः each one desirous killing the other, तत् then, महत् great, युद्धम् war, परस्पराभिमुखयोः who stood facing each other, दृप्तयोः ensued, सिंहयोरिव like lions, उपोढम् come near

The arrows endowed with very high speed, glowing in radiance like the sun's radiance, holding the arrows, each one desirous of killing the other stood facing each other, came near, and started fighting like lions in the great war.
ततोदेवास्सगन्धर्वास्सिद्धाश्चपरमर्षयः ।।6.108.19।।

समीयुर्द्वैरथंद्रष्टुंरावणक्षयकाङ्क्षिणः ।


ततः thereafter, सगन्धर्वाः the Gandharvas, देवाः Devas, सिद्धाश्च Siddhas, परमर्षयः sages, रावणक्षय काङ्क्षिणः longing for destruction of Ravana, ध्वैरथम् duel, द्रष्टुम् witness, समीयुःcame

Thereafter, the Gandharvas, Devas, Siddhas and sages longing for the end of Ravana came there to witness the duel.
वर्षरुधिरंदेवोरावणस्यरधोपरि ।।6.108.20।।

वातामण्डलिनस्त्रीव्राह्यपसव्यंप्रचक्रमुः ।


रावणस्य Ravana's, रथोपरि on the chariot, देवः Devas, रुधिरम् blood, ववर्ष rained, मण्डलिनः in circles, तीव्राः intense, वाताः wind, अपसव्यम् left to right, प्रचक्रमुः blew

Devas rained blood on Ravana's chariot, wind blew in circles intensely from left to right.
महत् गृध्रकुलंचास्यभ्रममाणंनभस्तले ।।6.108.21।।

येनयेनरथोयातितेनतेनप्रधावति

सभस्तले in the sky, भ्रममाणम् hovering, महत् huge, गृध्रकुलम् flock of eagles, अस्य on his, रथः chariot, येनयेन whatever path, याति went, तेनतेन there and there, प्रधावति followed

In the sky, a huge flock of eagles hovering on the chariot of Ravana went following the chariot wherever it went.
सन्ध्ययाचावृतालङ्काजपापुष्पनिकाशया ।।6.108.22।।

दृश्यतेसम्प्रदीप्तेवदिवसेऽपिवसुन्धरा ।


लङ्का Lanka, जपापुष्पनिकाशया as though filled with japa flowers, सन्ध्यया like dusk, आवृता enshrouded, वसुन्धरा earth surface, दिवसेऽपि even though day time, सम्प्रदीप्तेव, glowing, दृश्यते seemed

Lanka seemed glowing in red colour like at dusk, and as though the earth was burning, shrouded with Japa flowers, even though it was daytime.
सनिर्घातामहोल्काश्चसम्प्रपेतुर्महास्वनाः ।।6.108.23।।

विषादयंस्तेरक्षांसिरावणस्यतदाहिताः ।


सनिर्घाताः meteors, महास्वनाः with great sound, महोल्काश्च huge fire, सम्प्रपेतुः dropped, रावणस्य Ravana's, अहिताः end, ते they, रक्षांसि Rakshasas, विषादयन् were sad

Meteors and huge fire dropped there indicating Ravana's end. Seeing them, Rakshasas were sad.
रावणश्चयतस्तत्रप्रचचालवसुन्धरा ।।6.108.25।।

रक्षसां च प्रहरतांगृहीताइवबाहवः ।


रावणः Ravana यतः where, तत्र he was, वसुन्धरा earth, प्रचचाल shook, प्रहरताम् moving, रक्षसां च Rakshasas, बाहवः many, गृहीताइव as if clasped

Wherever Ravana went, the earth shook. Many Rakshasas felt their hands clasped.
ताम्राःपीतास्सिताश्वेताःपतितास्सूर्यरश्मयः ।।6.108.26।।

दृश्यन्तेरावणस्याग्रेपर्वतस्येवधातवः ।


रावणस्य Ravana's, अग्रे front, ताम्राः red, पीताः yellow, सिताश्वेताः white and dark, सूर्यरश्मयः sun rays, पतिताः fallen, पर्वतस्य mountain's, धातवःइव minerals, दृश्यन्ते appeared

The rays of the Sun fell in front of Ravana, in red, yellow, white, and dark like minerals on the mountain.
गृध्रैरनुगताश्चास्यवमन्त्योज्वलनंमुखैः ।।6.108.27।।

प्रणेदुर्मुखमीक्षन्त्यःसम्रद्धमशिवंशिवाः ।


गृध्रैः vultures, अनुगताः followed, शिवाः shejackals, मुखैः mouth, ज्वलनम् burning fire, वमन्त्यः vomitted, अस्य from there, मुखम् mouth, ईक्षन्त्यःindicating, सम्रद्धम् agitated, अशिवम् inauspicious, प्रणेदुः screamed

The vultures followed by shejackals vomited, burning fire from their mouths indicating inauspiciousness and screamed.
प्रतिकूलंववेवायूरणेपांसून् समुकतिरन् ।।6.108.28।।

तस्यराक्षसराजस्यकुर्वन्दृष्टिविलोपनम् ।


वायुः wind, तस्यराक्षसराजस्य that Rakshasa king's, दृष्टिविलोपनम् clouding the sight, कुर्वन made, रणे in war, पांसून् close by, समुकतिरन् to, प्रतिकूलम् unfavourable, ववौ blew

The unfavourable wind that blew in war, clouded the sight of Rakshasa king.
निपेतुरिन्द्राशनयस्सैन्येचाप्यसमन्ततः ।।6.108.29।।

दुर्विषह्यस्वनाघोरंविनाजलधरोदयम् ।


जलधरोदयंविना without clouds, घोरम् terrific, दुर्विषह्यस्वनाः unbearable sound, इन्द्राशनयः thunderbolts of Indra, अस्य on his, सैन्ये army, समन्ततःall over, निपेतुःdropped

Without clouds, terrific thunderbolts of Indra (rain) dropped on his (Ravana's) army all over causing unbearable sound.
दिशश्चप्रदिशस्सर्वाबभूवुस्तिमिरावृताः ।।6.108.30।।

पांसुवर्षेणमहतादुर्दर्शं च नभोऽभवत् ।


सर्वाः all, दिशः च directions, प्रदिशश्च intermediate points, तिमिरावृताः enveloped by darkness, बभूवुः remained, नभः sky, महता huge, पांसुवर्षेण shower of dust, दुर्दर्शम् to see, अभवत् obscure

All directions and intermediate points were enveloped by darkness by the shower of dust and the huge sky was obscure.
कुर्वन्त: कलहंघोरंशारिकास्तद्रथंप्रति ।।6.108.31।।

निपेतुश्शतशस्तत्रदारुणादारुणारुताः ।


दारुणारुताः fighting in terrific way, दारुणाः frightening, शतशः in hundreds, शारिकाः minas, घोरम् dreadful, कलहम् cries, कुर्वन्त: emitting, तत्र there, तद्रथंप्रति on the chariot, निपेतुः fallen

Hundreds of minas making frightening sounds, fighting in terrific manner emitting dreadful cries had fallen on the chariot there.
जघनेभ्यःस्फुलिङ्गांश्चनेत्रेभ्योऽश्रूणिसन्ततम् ।।6.108.32।।

मुमुचुस्तस्यतुरगास्तुल्यमग्नि च वारि च ।


तस्य his, तुरगाः horses, जघनेभ्यः from hips, स्फुलिङ्गान् fire sparks, नेत्रेभ्यः from eyes, अश्रूणिच tears, अग्निं च fire, वारि च water, तुल्यम् equally, सन्ततम् at a time, मुमुचुःlet out

His (Ravana's) horses were letting out fire sparks from their hips, tears, water, and fire from their eyes at a time, continuously.
एवंप्रकाराबहवस्समुत्पाताभयापहाः ।।6.108.33।।

रावणस्यविनाशायदारुणाःसम्प्रजज्ञिरे ।


एवंप्रकाराः in that manner, बहवः many, भयावहाः frightful, दारुणाः dreadful, समुत्पाताः falling, रावणस्य Ravana's, विनाशाय destruction, सम्प्रजज्ञिरे indicated

In that manner, many frightful and dreadful objects falling indicated destruction of Ravana.
रामस्यापिनिमित्तानिसौम्यानि च शिवानि च ।।6.108.34।।

बभूवुर्जयशंसीनिप्रादुर्भूतानिसर्वशः ।


सर्वशःon all sides, प्रादुर्भूतानि displaying beings, सौम्यानि delightful, शिवानि auspicious, रामस्य Rama's, जयशंसीनि signs of victory, निमित्तानि indications, बभूवुः appeared

On all sides appeared indications of signs of victory for Rama, displaying beings delightful and auspicious.
निमित्तानि च सौम्यानिराघवःस्वजयायवै ।।6.108.35।।

दृष्टवापरमसम्हृष्टोहतंमेने च रावणम् ।


राघवःRaghava, स्वजयाय his own victory, सौम्यानि good, निमित्तानि indications, दृष्टवा seeing, परमसम्हृष्टः very delighted रावणम् Ravana, हतम् destroyed, मेने by me

Sri Rama was very delighted over the appearance of good signs of his own victory and thought 'Ravana is destroyed by me'.
ततोनिरीक्ष्यात्मगतानिराघवोरणेनिमित्तानिनिमित्तकोविदः ।

जगामहर्षं च परां च निर्वृतिंचकारयुद्धेह्यधिक च विक्रमम् ।।6.108.36।।


ततः there upon, निमित्तकोविदः knowledgeable of the indications, राघवःRaghava, रणे in war, आत्मगतानि his own past experience, निमित्तानि portents, निरीक्ष्य observing, हर्षं च felt joyful, पराम् enemy, निर्वृतिं च end, जगाम proceeded, युद्धे for war, अधिकम् greater, विक्रमं च prowess, चकार exhibit

Thereafter, Raghava, knower of the signs of victory in war and his own self experience felt joyful and proceeded to put an end to the enemy, exhibiting greater prowess.

This is the end of one hundred and eighth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
