[Rama uses Brahmastra and kills Ravana. The terror of all worlds killed. Charanas and Devas were filled with joy.]

अथसंस्मारयामासमातलिराघवंतदा ।

अजानन्निवकिंवीरत्वमेनमनुवर्तसे ।।6.111.1।।


अथ and तदा then, मातलिः Matali, राघवम् to Raghava, संस्मारयामास reminded, वीर hero, अजानन्निव as if you don't know, त्वम् you, एनम् in that way, किम् why, अनुवर्तसे are you doing

Matali reminded Rama in this way," O heroic Rama, why are you doing this way, as if you do not know?"
विसृजास्मैवधायत्वमस्त्रंपैतामहंप्रभो ।

विनाशकालःकथितोःयःसुरैःसोऽद्यवर्तते ।।6.111.2।।


प्रभो king, त्वम् you, वधाय destruction, अस्मै you, पैतामहम् creator Brahma, अस्त्रम् missile, विसृज use, सुरैः Suras, यः they, विनाशकालः for the destruction, कथितः spoken, सः he, अद्य now, वर्तते use

"O king! As spoken by Suras, the destruction of Ravana has come now. Use the missile of the creator Brahma."
ततःसंस्मारितोरामस्तेनवाक्येनमातलेः ।

जग्राह स शरंदीप्तंनिःश्वसन्तमिवोरगम् ।।6.111.3।।

यंतस्मैप्रथमंप्रादादगस्त्योभगवानृषिः ।

ब्रह्मदत्तंमहाबाणममोघंयुधिवीर्यवान् ।।6.111.4।।

Suggested and reminded by Matali, valiant Sri Rama seized hold of the wonderful glowing arrow, bestowed by Brahma, and given by the divine to sage Agastya first. Breathing heavily, like a serpent, Rama seized the arrow.
ब्रह्मणानिर्मितंपूर्वमिन्द्रार्थममितौजसा ।

दत्तंसुरपतेःपूर्वंत्रिलोकजयकाङ्क्षिणः ।।6.111.5।।


पूर्वम् earlier, इन्द्रार्थम् for Indra's sake, अमितेजसा very powerful, ब्रह्मणा by Brahma, निर्मितम् for the sake, पूर्वम् earlier, त्रिलोकजयकाङ्क्षिणः desirous to gain the three worlds, सुरपतेः king of gods, दत्तम् bestowed

यस्यवाजेषुपवनःफलेपावकभास्करौ ।

शरीरमाकाशमयंगौरवेमेरुमन्दरौ ।।6.111.6।।


यस्य its, वाजेषु feathers, पवनः presided by wind god, फले head, पावकभास्करौ presided by fire and Sun god, गौरवे energy, मेरुमन्दरौ Meru and Mandara presided over, शरीरम् body, आकाशमयम् like sky

The wind god presided over its feathers, the fire god and the Sun god presided over its head, its energy was presided over by Meru and Mandara mountains and its weight by the sky.
जाज्वल्यमानंवपुषासुपुङ्खंहेमभूषितम् ।

तेजसासर्वभूतानांकृतंभास्करवर्चसम् ।।6.111.7।।


वपुषा form, जाज्वल्यमानम् shining, सुपुङ्खम् the feathers, हेमभूषितम्decked with gold, सर्वभूतानाम् all beings, तेजसा splendid, कृतम् crafted, भास्करवर्चसम् like the Sun in brilliance

सधूममिवकालानगिंदीप्तमाशीविषोपमम् ।

नरनागाश्ववृद्धानांभेदनंक्षिप्रकारिणम् ।।6.111.8।।


सधूमम् its fire, कालानगिम् इव like the universal dissolution, दीप्तम् burning, अशीविषोपमम् like the venomous serpent, नरनागरश्ववृद्धानाम् hosts of men, elephants, horses of enemies, भेदनम् splitting, क्षिप्रकारिणम् quick in action

द्वाराणांपरिघाणां च गिरीणांचापिभेदनम् ।

नानारुधिरदिग्धाङ्गंमेदोदिग्धंसुदारुणम् ।।6.111.9।।

वज्रसारंमहानादंनानासमितिदारणम् ।

सर्ववित्रासनंभीमंश्वसन्तमिवपन्नगम् ।।6.111.10।।

कङ्कगृध्रबकानां च गोमायुगणरक्षसाम् ।

नित्यंभक्षप्रदंयुद्धेयमरूपंभयापहम् ।।6.111.11।।


युद्धे in war, कङ्कगृध्राबकानां च buzzards, vultures, herons कोमायुगणरक्षसाम् jackals and Rakshasas, नित्यम् always, भक्षप्रदम् provider of food, यमरूपम् form of Yama, भयावहम् causing terror

नन्दनंवानरेन्द्राणांरक्षसामवसादनम् ।

वाजितंविविधैर्वाजैश्चारुचित्रैर्गरुत्मतः ।।6.111.12।।


वानरेन्द्राणाम् for Vanara chiefs, नन्दनम् delight, रक्षसाम् for Rakshasas, अवसादनम् causes destruction, गरुत्मतः for eagles, चित्रैः picturesque, विविधैः several, वाजैः for arrows, वाजितम् plumes

तमुत्तमेषुंलोकानामिक्ष्वाकुभयनाशनम् ।

द्विषतांकीर्तिहरणंप्रहर्षकरमात्मनः ।।6.111.13।।

अभिम्नत्यततोरामस्तंमहेषुंमहाबलः ।

वेदप्रोक्तेनविधिनासन्दधेकार्मुकेबली ।।6.111.14।।


महाबलः mighty, बली strong, रामः Rama, लोकानाम् of the world, उत्तमेषुम् great arrow, इक्ष्वाकुभयनाशनम् dispellar of fear for Ikshvaku, द्विषताम् of enemies, कीर्तिहरणम् takes away the glory, आत्मनः own, प्रहर्षणम् delighting, तम् that, महेषुम् great arrow, वेदप्रोक्तेन chanting vedas, विधिना as tradition, अभिम्नत्यर charging with mystic power, कार्मुके bow, सन्दधे fitted

The great arrow, was a dispeller of fear of enemies to Ikshvaku kings, which takes away the glory of enemies, delighting to oneself, chanting vedas as per tradition, charging with mystic power, mighty strong Rama fitted to the bow.
तस्मिन् सधनीयमानेतुराघवेणशरोत्तमे ।

सर्वभूतानिसन्त्रेसुश्चचाल च वसुन्धरा ।।6.111.15।।


राघवेण by Raghava, तस्मिन् his own, शरोत्तमे excellent arrow, सधनीयमाने started fixing, सर्वभूतानि all beings, सन्त्रेषु terrified, वसुन्धरा earth, चचाल shook

As Raghava started fixing his excellent arrow, all beings got terrified and the earth shook.
स रावणायसङ्रुद्धोभृशमायम्यकार्मुकम् ।

चिक्षेपपरमायत्तःशरंमर्मविदारणम् ।।6.111.16।।


सङ्क्रुद्धः very furious, सः he, कार्मुकम् bow, भृशम् fully, आयम्य stretched, परमायत्तः very well prepared, मर्मविदारणम् capable of tearing into vital parts, शरम् arrow, रावणाय on Ravana, चिक्षेप released

Rama, provoked by anger, stretched the bow to full length, very well prepared, released the arrow on Ravana, which was capable of tearing into the vital parts.
स वज्रइवदुर्धर्षोवज्रिबाहुविसर्जितः ।

कृतान्तइवचावार्योन्यपतद्रावणोरसि ।।6.111.17।।


वज्रिबाहुविसर्जितः released from thunderbolt hurled by the arm of Indra, वज्रःइव like thunderbolt, दुर्धर्षः difficult, कृतान्तःइव capable of bringing to an end, अवार्यः prevent, सः that, रावणोरसि into Ravana's chest, न्यपतत् penetrated

Like the thunderbolt hurled by the arm of Indra, difficult to obstruct, capable of bringing life to an end, that arrow released by Rama penetrated into Ravana's chest.
स विसृष्टोमहावेगश्शरीरान्तकरश्शरः ।

चिच्छेदहृदयंतस्यरावणस्यदुरात्मनः ।।6.111.18।।


विसृष्टः loosed, महावेगः high velocity शरीरान्तकरः putting an end to the body, सःशरः that arrow, दुरात्मनः evil minded, तस्य his, रावणस्य Ravana's, हृदयम् heart, बिभेद split as under

Loosed at high velocity, that arrow capable of putting an end to the body, split as under the heart of evilminded Ravana
रुधिराक्तस्सवेगेनशरीरान्तकरःशरः ।

रावणस्यहरन्प्राणान्विवेशधरणीतलम् ।।6.111.19।।


शरीरान्तकरः capable of putting an end to the body, सःशरः that arrow, वेगेन speedily, रावणस्य Ravana's, प्राणान् life, हरन् took out, रुधिराक्तः smeared with blood, धरणीतलम् into the ground, विवेश entered

That arrow which was capable of putting an end to the body took out Ravana's life and smeared with blood, it entered the earth.
स शरोरावणंहत्वारुधिरार्द्रीकृतच्छविः ।

कृतकर्मानिभृतवत्स्वतूणींपुनराविशत् ।।6.111.20।।


सःशरः that arrow, रावणम् Ravana, हत्वा on killing, रुधिरार्द्रीकृतच्छविः soaked in blood, कृतकर्मा having accomplished the task, निभृतवत् quietly, स्वतूणीम् its quiver, पुनः again, अविशत् reentered

That arrow of Rama, on killing Ravana, soaked in blood, having accomplished the task quietly reentered its quiver.
तस्यहस्ताद्धतस्याशुकार्मुकं च ससायकम् ।

निपपातसहप्राणैर्भ्रश्यमानस्यजीवितात् ।।6.111.21।।


हतस्य killed, जीवितात् life, भ्रश्यमानस्य fallen from, तस्य his, हस्तात् hand, ससायकम् arrow, कार्मुकम् bow, आशु with, प्राणैःसह with life breath, निपपात fell

Thus, when Ravana was killed and lost his life, the bow and arrow in his hand also fell along with his life breath.
गतासुर्भीमवेगस्तुनैरृतेन्द्रोमहाद्युतिः ।

पपातस्यन्दनाद्भूमौवृत्रोवज्रहतोयथा ।।6.111.22।।


भीमवेगः terrific speed, महाद्युतिः courageous, नैरृतेन्द्रः king of Rakshasas, गतासुः having gone, वज्रहतः killed by thunderbolt, वृत्रःयथा Vrttra, स्यन्दनात् when struck down, भूमौ on earth, पपात fell

The king of Rakshasas, who possessed terrific speed and courage, having lost life, fell on earth like Vrttra struck down by thunderbolt.
तंदृष्टवापतितंभूमौहतशेषानिशाचराः ।

हतनाधाभयत्रस्तास्सर्वतस्सम्प्रदुद्रुवुः ।।6.111.23।।


भूमौ on earth surface, पतितम् fallen, तम् that, दृष्टवा seeing, हतशेषाः left after killing, निशाचराः night rangers, हतनाथाः Lord killed, भयत्रस्ताः fearing, सर्वतः all over, सम्प्रदुद्रुवुः ran

Seeing their Lord killed and fallen on the ground, the leftover night rangers fled all over in fear.
सर्वतश्चाभिपेतुस्तान्वानराद्रुमयोधिनः ।

दशग्रीववधंदृष्टवावानराजितकाशिनः ।।6.111.24।।


द्रुमयोधिनः holding trees, वानराः Vanaras, तान् they, सर्वतःall sides, अभिपेतुः roaming, दशग्रीववधम् killed ten headed Ravana, दृष्टवा seeing, वानराः Vanaras, जितकाशिनः triumphant

Seeing Ravana killed, the Vanaras holding trees went roaming on all sides, feeling triumphant.
अर्दितावानरैर्भ्रष्टालङ्कामभ्यपतन् भयात् ।

हताश्रयात्वात्करुणैर्भाष्पप्रस्रवणैर्मुखैः ।।6.111.25।।


वानरैः by Vanaras, अर्दिताः hurt, भ्रष्टाः lost battle, भयात् out of fear, हताश्रयत्वात् their king being killed, करुणैः piteous, बाष्पप्रस्रवणैः eyes filled with tears, मुखैः face, लङ्काम् Lanka, अभ्यपतन् went towards

The Rakshasas hurt by the Vanaras, lost battle and their king killed, were piteous and went towards Lanka in fear, eyes filled with tears.
ततोविनेदुःसम्हृष्टावानराःजितकाशिनः ।

वदन्तोराघवजयंरावणस्य ज तद्वधम् ।।6.111.26।।


ततः then, जितकाशिनः feeling triumphant, वानराः Vanaras, सम्हृष्टाः highly delighted, राघवजयम् Rama's victory, रावणस्य Ravana's, तद्वधं च death of Ravana, वदन्तः shouted, विनेदुः in joy

Then the Vanaras, feeling triumphant, got highly excited over Rama's victory and the death of Ravana, and shouted aloud in joy.
अथान्तरिक्षेव्यनदत्सौम्यस्त्रिदशदुन्धुभिः ।

दिव्यगन्धशहस्तत्रमारुतस्सुसुकोववौ ।।6.111.27।।


अथ and now, अन्तरिक्षे in the sky, सौम्याः gods, त्रिदशदुन्धुभिः thirty drums, व्यनदत् sounded, तत्र there, दिव्यगन्धवहः divine fragrance, सुसुखः pleasant, मारुतः breeze, ववौ blew

And then thirty drums of gods sounded in the sky. Divine fragrant pleasant breeze blew.
निपपातान्तरिक्षाच्चपुष्पवृष्टिस्तदाभुवि ।

किरन्तीराघवरथंदुरवापामनोहरा ।।6.111.28।।


तदा then, अन्तरिक्षात् from the heaven, राघवरथम् on Raghava's chariot, किरन्ती covering, दुरवापा difficult to find out, मनोहरा very pleasing, पुष्पवृष्टिः shower of flowers, भुवि on earth, निपपात fell

Then from heaven, a very pleasing shower of flowers, difficult to know from where, fell on Raghava's chariot covering it and dropped on the ground.
राघवस्तवसंयुक्तागगने च विशुश्रुवे ।

साधुसाध्वितिवागग्य्रादेवतानांमहात्मनाम् ।।6.111.29।।


महात्मनाम् great soul, देवतानाम् gods too, साधुसाधुइति well done well done, राघवस्तवसंयुक्ता praised Rama, अग्य्रा the foremost, वाक् words, गगने in the heaven, विशुश्रुवे च heard

The gods too praised Sri Rama, the great soul saying, 'Well done, Well done', from the heaven, which was distinctly heard.
अविवेशमहान् हर्षोदेवानांचारणैःसह ।

रावणेनिहतेरौद्रेसर्वलोकभयङ्करे ।।6.111.30।।


रौद्रे terror, सर्वलोकभयङ्करे of all worlds, रावणे Ravana, निहते killed, चारणैः Charanas, देवानाम् Devas, महान् great, हर्षः joy, अविवेश filled

When Ravana, a terror of all worlds was killed, the Charanas and Devas were filled with great joy.
ततःसकामंसुग्रीवमङ्गदं च विभीषणम् ।

चकारराघवःप्रीतोहत्वाराक्षसपुङ्गवम् ।।6.111.31।।


राघवः Raghava, राक्षसपुङ्गवम् foremost of the Rakshasas, हत्वा killed, प्रीतः pleased, राघवः Raghava, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, अङ्गदं च and Angada, विभीषणं च Vibheeshana also, सकामम् their desire fulfilled, चकार made them happy

The foremost of the Rakshasas killed, Raghava was pleased and having fulfilled the desire of Sugriva, Angada, Vibheeshana, he made them happy.
ततःप्रजग्मुःप्रशमंमरुद्गणादिशःप्रसेदुर्विमलंनभोऽभवत् ।

महीचकम्पे न च मारुतोववौस्थिरप्रभश्चाप्यभवद्दिवाकरः ।।6.111.32।।


ततः then, मरुद्गणाः hosts of gods, प्रशमम् tranquil, प्रजग्मुः attained, दिशः quarters, प्रसेदुः brightened, नभः sky, विमलम् clear, अभवत् became, मही earth, न चकम्पे no longer shook, मारुतः wind, ववौ blew, दिवाकरःचापि even the Sun, स्थिरप्रभः steady radiance, अभवत् became

Then the host of gods attained tranquil, quarters brightened, sky became clear, earth no longer shook, wind blew and even the Sun became steady and radiant.
ततस्तुसुग्रीवविभीषणाङ्गदाःसुहृद्विशिष्टास्सहलक्ष्मणास्तदा ।

समेत्यहृष्टाविजयेनराघवंरणेऽभिरामंविधिनाभ्यपूजयन् ।।6.111.33।।


ततः then, सुहृद्विशिष्टाः coming together, सहलक्ष्मणाः accompanied by Lakshmana, सुग्रीवविभीषणाङ्गदाः Sugriva, Vibheeshana, and Angada, रणे in the battle, विजयेन by the victory, हृष्टाः happy, अभिरामम् charming, रामम् Rama, समेत्य friends together, तदा then, विधिना as tradition goes, अभ्यपूजयन् offered prayers

Then all of them (hosts of gods) coming together, accompanied by Lakshmana, Sugriva, Vibheeshana, and Angada along with other friends, happy about the victory in the battle offered prayers to charming Sri Rama in accordance with tradition.
स तुनिहतरिपुस्स्थिरप्रतिज्ञःस्वजनबलाभिवृतोरणेरराज ।

रघुकुलनृपनन्दनोमहौजास्त्रिदशगणैरभिसंवृतोयथेन्द्रः ।।6.111.34।।


निहतरिपुः enemy dead, स्थिरप्रतिज्ञः steadfast in his vow, महौजाः endowed with great prowess, रघुकुलनृपनन्दनः enhancer of the joy of Raghu race, सः he, रणे battlefield, स्वजनबलाभिवृतः surrounded by his people and army, महेन्द्रःइव like Indra, रराज shone

Sri Rama, who was steadfast in his vow and endowed with great prowess, having killed his enemy, in the battle, stood, surrounded by his people and the army. Sri Rama the enhancer of joy of Raghus shone like Indra surrounded by host of gods.

This is the end of one hundred and eleventh sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by Sage Valmiki.
