Sloka & Translation

[Rama describes to Sita his efforts to succeed with a valiant friend and tells her in a discomforting manner to go wherever.]

तांतुपाश्वस्थितांप्रह्वांरामस्सम्प्रेक्ष्यमैथिलीम् ।

हृदयान्तर्गतंक्रोधव्याहर्तुमुपचक्रमे ।।6.118.1।।


रामः Rama, पार्श्वे near, स्थिताम् stood, प्रह्वाम् shy, तांमैथिलीम् she, Mythili, सम्प्रेक्ष्य observing, हृदयान्तर्गतम् in his heart, क्रोधम् anger, व्याहर्तुम् expression, उपचक्रमे started

Observing Mythili who stood near him, Rama started to give expression to what was in his heart.
एषासिनिर्जिताभद्रेशत्रुंजित्वारणाजिरे ।

पौरुषाद्यदनुष्ठेयंमयैतदुपपादितम् ।।6.118.2।।


भद्रे auspicious, एषा this, रणाजिरे battlefield, शत्रुम् enemy, जित्वा won, निर्जिता destruction, असि I, पौरुषात् with effort, यत् that which, अनुष्ठेयम् worth doing, तत् that, मया by me, उपपादितम् has been done

"O Auspicious Sita! You are won by destruction of the enemy in the battlefield. What was worth doing has been done with all my effort."
गतोऽस्म्यन्तममर्षस्यधर्षणासम्प्रमार्जिता ।

अवमानश्चशत्रुश्चयुगपन्निहतौमया ।।6.118.3।।


अमर्षस्य by indignation, अन्तम् put an end, गतःअस्मि I lost, धर्षणा insult, सम्प्रमार्जिता gained reward, मया by me, अवमानश्च indignity, शत्रुश्च enemy, युगपत् all at once, निहतौ by killing

"I have put an end to the indignity that I lost. I gained reward for the insult. The indignity offered by the enemy has been wiped out all at once."
अद्यमेपौरुषंदृष्टमद्यमेसफल्श्रमः ।

अद्यतीर्णप्रतिज्ञोऽत्वाप्रभवाम्यद्यचात्मनः ।।6.118.4।।


अद्य now, मे my, पौरुषम् effort, दृष्टम् see, अद्य today, मे my, श्रमः effort, सफलः successful, अद्य now, अहम् I, तीर्णप्रतिज्ञः vow fulfilled, अद्य today, आत्मनः I am, प्रभवामि independent

"Now you see the result of my effort. I am successful and fulfilled my vow. Today I am independent."
यात्वंविरहितानीताचलचित्तेनरक्षसा ।

दैवसम्पादितोदोषोमानुषेणमयाजितः ।।6.118.5।।


यात्वम् when you, विरहिता were alone, चलचित्तेन fickle minded, रक्षसा Rakshasa, नीता abducted, दैवसम्पादितः by the will of god, दोषः fault, मानुषेण by a mortal, मया by me, जितः won

"When you were alone you were abducted by the fickle minded Rakshasa. The fault of destiny has been won by me, a mortal by the will of god।।"
सम्प्राप्तमवमानंयस्तेजसा न प्रमार्जति ।

कस्तस्यपुरुषार्थोमहताप्यल्पचेतसः ।।6.118.6।।


यः he who, सम्प्राप्तम् gets, अवमानम् insult, तेजसा might, न प्रमार्जति not, अल्पचेतसः petty minded, तस्य his, महतापि however great, पौरुषेण by the, कःअर्थः What is the purpose

"What is the purpose of might however great he might be, if he is petty minded and does not wipe off the insult?"
लङ्घनं च समुद्रस्यलङ्कायाश्चापिमर्धनम् ।

सफलंतस्य च श्लाघ्यमद्यकर्महनूमतः ।।6.118.7।।


तस्य his, हनूमतः Hanuman, समुद्रस्य ocean's, लङ्घनम् leaping across, लङ्कायाः of Lanka, मर्धनंच Devastation, श्लाघ्यम् laudable, कर्म action, अद्य now, सफलम् result

"Hanuman's leaping across the ocean and devastating action of Lanka has yielded results now."
युद्धेविक्रमतश्चैवहितंमन्त्रयतस्तथा ।

सुग्रीवस्यससैन्यस्यसफलोऽद्यपरिश्रमः ।।6.118.8।।


युद्धे in the combat, विक्रमतः prowess, तथा so also, हितम् good advice, मन्त्रयतः tendered, ससैन्यस्य and his army, सुग्रीवस्य Sugriva's, परिश्रमः effort, अद्य now, सफलः successful

"The prowess of Sugriva and also his army, his good advice and efforts in combat have become successful."
विभीषणस्य च तथासफलोऽद्यपरिश्रमः ।

विगुणंभ्रातरंत्यक्त्वायोमांस्वयमुपस्थितः ।।6.118.9।।


तथा similarly, विभीषणस्य Vibheeshana's, परिश्रमश्च hard work, अद्य now, सफलः success, यः he who, विगुणम् devoid of good qualities, भ्रातरम् brother, त्यक्त्वा leaving, स्वयम् on his own, माम् to me, उपस्थितः stood

"In the same way even Vibheeshana's hard work leaving his brother devoid of good qualities and coming to me on his own has given success."
इत्येवंवदत्श्रुत्वासीतारामस्यतद्वचः ।

मृगीवोत्फुल्लनयनाबभूवाश्रुपरिप्लुता ।।6.118.10।।


सीता Sita, इत्येवम् in this way, वदतः speaking, रामस्य Rama's, तत् those, वचः words, श्रुत्वा hearing, मृगीव eyes like that of female deer, उत्फुल्लनयना wide open eyes, अश्रुपरिप्लुता filled with tears, बभूव became

Sita's broad eyes which were like that of female deer were filled with tears on hearing the words of Rama.
पश्यतस्तांतुरामस्यसमीपेहृदयप्रियाम् ।

जनवादभयाद्राज्ञोबभूवहृदयंद्विधा ।।6.118.11।।


समीपे Nearby, हृदयप्रियाम् dear to heart, ताम्, पश्यतः seeing, राज्ञः king, रामस्य Rama's, हृदयम् heart, जनवादभयात् with the fear of public, द्विधा burning, बभूव became

Rama was already hurt and on seeing Sita who was dear to his heart nearby, he was burning with the fear of public opinion.
सीतामुत्पलपत्राक्षींनीलकुञ्चितमूर्थजाम् ।

अवदद्वैवरारोहंमध्येवानररक्षसाम् ।।6.118.12।।


उत्पलपत्राक्षीम् whose eyes were like lotus petals, नीलकुञ्चितमूर्थजाम् who had dark beautiful curly hair, वरारोहाम् beautiful limbs, सीताम् Sita, वानररक्षसाम् Vanaras and Rakshasas, मध्ये midst, अवदत् वै spoke with great discomfort

In the midst of Vanaras and Rakshasas, Rama spoke with great discomfort to Sita whose eyes were like lotus petals and hair was dark and curly and whose limbs were beautiful.
यत्कर्तव्यंमनुष्येणधर्षणांप्रतिमार्जता ।

तत्कृतंरावणंहत्वामयेदंमानकाङ्क्षिणा ।।6.118.13।।


मानकाङ्क्षिणा that which my mind desired to do, मया by me, रावणम् Ravana, हत्वा killing, धर्षणाम् insult, प्रतिमार्जता to get rid of, मनुष्येण by a human, यत् all that, कर्तव्यम् duty, तत् that, इदम् thus, कृतम् done

"That which my mind desired as a duty of a human being, to get rid of the insult has been done by killing Ravana."
निर्जिताजीवलोकस्यतपसाभावितात्मना ।

अगस्त्येनदुराधर्षामुनिनादक्षिणेवधिक् ।।6.118.14।।


तपसा by austerity, भावितात्मना realized master, अगस्त्येन by Agastya, जीवलोकस्य world of mortals, दुराधर्षा difficult to assail, दक्षिणाधिक् इव southern quarter, निर्जिता killing

"Though the southern quarter is difficult to assail for the world of mortals, Agastya, a realized sage, has won by the power of his austerity. In the same way I have won you."
विदितश्चास्तुभत्रंतेयोऽयंरणपरिश्रमः ।

सुतीर्णःसुहृदांवीर्यान्नत्वदर्थंमयाकृतः ।।6.118.15।।

रक्षतातुमयावृत्तपमवादं च सर्वतः ।

प्रख्यातस्यात्मवंशस्यव्यङ्ग्यं च परिमार्जता ।।6.118.16।।


यः this, रणपरिश्रमः effort in war, सुहृदाम् friends, वीर्यात् valour, सुतीर्णः assistance, अयम् this, मया by me, त्वदर्थम् meaning, न कृतः not done, विदितः let you know, अस्तु this, ते to you, भद्रम् auspicious, अस्तु you be, वृत्तम् from all sides, सर्वतः all over, अपवादं च scandal, रक्षतां to protect, प्रख्यातस्य illustrious, आत्मवंशस्य my race, व्यङ्गम् obloquy, परिमार्जता to get rid of, मया I have done

"Sita! This effort in carrying out with the assistance of valiant friends is not done for your sake. Let it be known to you. I have done this to protect good conduct and my illustrious race from scandal and rid of obloquy from all sides."
प्राप्तचारित्रसन्देहाममप्रतिमुखेस्थिता ।

दीपोनेत्रातुरस्येवप्रतिकूलासिमेदृढम् ।।6.118.17।।


प्राप्तचारित्रसन्देहा in the event of doubtful conduct, मम my, प्रतिमुखे in front, स्थिता standing, नेत्रातुरस्य sore eyes, दीपःइव like glowing, मे to me, दृढम् firmly, प्रतिकूलाअसि disagreeable you are

"In the event of doubtful conduct also you are standing firmly like a glowing lamp for me suffering from sore eyes and disagreeable to me."
तद्गच्छत्वानुजानेऽद्ययथेष्टंजनकात्मजे ।

एतादशदिशोभद्रेकार्यमस्ति न मेत्वया ।।6.118.18।।


जनकात्मजे Janaka's daughter, तत् therefore, अद्य now, त्वाy our, अनुजाने permission, यथेष्टम् freedom, एताः any, दश direction, दिशः quarter, गच्छ go, भद्रे be auspicious, मे to me, त्वया by you, कार्यम् work, नास्ति nothing

"O Janaka's daughter! therefore now you are permitted to go wherever to any quarter. Let you be auspicious. I have no work with you."
कःपुमांस्तुकुलेजातस्स्त्रयंपरगृहाषिताम् ।

तेजस्वीपुनरादद्यात्सुहृल्लेख्येनचेतसा ।।6.118.19।।


कुले good race, जातः born, तेजस्वी eminent, कःपुमान्? which man, परगृहोषिताम् in other's home, स्त्रियम् lived, सुहृल्लेख्येन kind, चेतसा consciously, पुनः again, अदत्यात् accept

"Which eminent man born in a good race will again consciously accept a wife who lived in another's home?"
रावणाङ्कपरिक्लिष्टांदृष्टांदुष्टेनचक्षुषा ।

कथंत्वापुनरादद्यांकुलंव्यपदिशन् महत् ।।6.118.20।।


महत् great, कुलम् race, व्यपदिशन् thrown out, रावणाङ्कपरिक्लिष्टाम् squeezed from the arms of Ravana, दुष्टेन seeing, चक्षुषा with eyes, दृष्टाम् have been seen (with evil eyes by all), त्वाम् you, पुनः again, कथम् how, आदद्याम् accept

"You are thrown out of the arms of Ravana. You have been seen by him with lustful eyes, have been seen by all with evil eyes. How can one born in a great race accept you again?"
तदर्थंनिर्जितामेत्वंयशःप्रत्याहृतंमया ।

नास्तिमेत्यय्यभिष्वङ्गोयथेष्टंगम्यतामितः ।।6.118.21।।


त्वम् your, तदर्थम् the purpose, मे my, निर्जिता to rid of, मया by me, यशः fame, प्रत्याहृतम् won back, मे by me, त्वयि in you, अभिष्वङ्गः no interest, नास्ति not,

"The reason for winning you back is to get rid of the insult. Now I have no interest in you. You may go to the place of your choice."
तदद्यव्याहृतंभद्रेमयैतत् कृतबुधदिना ।

लक्ष्मणेनाथभरतेकुरुबुधदिंयथासुखम् ।।6.118.22।।


भद्रे auspicious, तत् therefore, अद्य today, कृतबुधदिना thought over well, मया by me, एतत् this, व्याहृतम् utterance, यथासुखम् where there is happiness, लक्ष्मणेवा with Lakshmana, अथ or else, भरते with Bharata, बुधदिम् think well, कुरु do

" Auspicious one! This utterance has been thought over well today. You may go wherever you find happiness, either to Lakshmana or else to Bharata. Think well and do."
शत्रुघ्नेवाथसुग्रीवेराक्षसेवाविभीषणे ।

निवेशयमनस्सीतेयथावासुखमात्मनः ।।6.118.23।।


सीते Sita, शत्रुघ्नेवा or Shatrughna, अथ or else, सुग्रीवे Sugriva, राक्षसे Rakshasa, विभीषणेवा Vibheeshana, आत्मनः your own, यथा like that, सुखम् happiness, मनः mind, निवेशय live

"Sita! You can go to Shatrughna or else Sugriva or even Rakshasa Vibheeshana, wherever you feel like to live."
न हित्वांरावणोदृष्टवादिव्यरूपांमनोरमाम् ।

मर्षयेतचिरंसीतेस्वगृहेपर्यवस्थिताम् ।।6.118.24।।


सीते Sita, दिव्यरूपाम् wonderful appearance, मनोरमाम् beautiful, स्वगृहे his own house, चिरम् long, पर्यवस्थिताम् resisted, त्वाम् you, दृष्टवा seeing, रावणः Ravana, नमर्षयेतहि not have detained

"Sita! You are endowed with beauty and having you in his own house for so long and seeing you, how Ravana could have resisted or detained you."
ततःप्रियार्हश्रवणातदप्रियंप्रियादुपश्रुत्यचिरस्यमैथिली ।

मुमोचबाष्पंसुभृशंप्रवेपितागजेन्द्रहस्ताभिहतेवसल्लकी ।।6.118.25।।


तः then, प्रियार्हश्रवणाः having heard what was unpalatable to hear, मैथिली Mythili, प्रियात् beloved, अप्रियम् unpalatable, तत् those, उपश्रुत्य heard, गजेन्द्रहस्ताभिहता hurt by the hand s of Lordly elephant, सल्लकीव like creeper, चिरस्य long, सुभृशम् excessively, प्रवेपिता quivering, बाष्पम् tears, मुमोच shed

Then having heard unpalatable words from her beloved, Mythili wept, quivering excessively shedding tears for long and was like a creeper struck by a Lordly elephant.

This is the end of one hundred eighteenth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
