Sloka & Translation

[Lanka is laid siege by the Vanara army. Ravana beholds the army of vanaras from the top of his palace. Rama and Lakshman take position of the Northern gate of Lanka. Ravana mobilizes his army and severe conflict takes place between Rakshasas and Vanara army.]

ततस्तेराक्षसास्तत्रगत्वारावणमन्दिरम् ।

न्यवेदयन्पुरींरुद्धांरामेणसहवानरैः ।।6.42.1।।


तत then, राक्षसा Rakshasas, स्तत्र there, रावणमन्दिरम् Ravana's abode, गत्वा proceeding to, रामेण Rama's, वानरैः Vanaras, सह along with, रुद्धां occupied, न्यवेदय informed, न्पुरीं total city.

Then the Rakshasas proceeding to Ravana's abode informed that Rama along with the vanaras have occupied the whole of Lanka.
रुद्धांतुनगरींश्रुत्वाजातक्रोधोनिशाचरः ।

विधानंद्विगुणंश्रुत्वाप्रासादंसोऽध्यरोहत ।।6.42.2।।


रुद्धां occupied, तु also, नगरीं city, श्रुत्वा hearing, जातक्रोधो very furious, निशाचरः night ranger, विधानं knowing, द्विगुणं twice, श्रुत्वा hearing, प्रासादं top of the mansion, अध्यरोहत planning for the protection of Lanka.

On knowing that Lanka is occupied, the night ranger Ravana, became very furious and doubled the forces of Lanka for the protection and went to the top of Lanka palace.
सददर्शावृतांलङ्कांसशैलवनकाननाम् ।

असङ्ख्येयैर्हरिगणैःसर्वतोयुद्धकाङ्क्षिभिः ।।6.42.3।।


स: he, युद्धकाङ्क्षिभिः desirous of combat, असङ्ख्येयै countless numbers, हर्रिगणैः troops of Vanaras, सशैलवनकाननाम् mountains and forests, सर्वतो all over, अवृतां occupied, लङ्कां Lanka, ददर्शा observed.

He observed a countless number of Vanara troops spread all over Lanka, mountains, and forests.
सदृष्ट्वावानरैःसर्वांवसुधांकवलीकृताम् ।

कथंक्षपयितव्याःस्युरितिचिन्तापरोऽभवत् ।।6.42.4।।


स: he, वानरैः Vanaras, सर्वां all, वसुधां earth, कवलीकृताम् occupied, दृष्ट्वा seeing, कथं how, स्युरिति thought, क्षपयितव्याः to destroy, चिन्तापरो thinking, अभवत् started.

Seeing the Vanaras occupying the entire earth, Ravana thought of destroying and started thinking.
सचिन्तयित्वासुचिरंधैर्यमालम्ब्यरावणः ।

राघवंहरियूथांश्चददर्शायतलोचनः ।।6.42.5।।


स: he, रावणः Ravana, सुचिरं for long, चिन्तयित्वा thinking over, धैर्यमालम्ब्य picking up courage, अयतलोचनः with thoughtful eyes, राघवं Raghava, हरियूथांश्च at the Vanaras, ददर्शा saw.

राघवःसहसैन्येनमुदितोनामपुप्लुवे ।

लङ्कांददर्शगुप्तांवैसर्वतोराक्षसैर्वृताम् ।।6.42.6।।


राघवः Raghava, मुदितो happily, सहसैन्येन with army, पुप्लुवे near, लङ्कां Lanka, सर्वतो all over, राक्षसैर्वृताम् fully filled with Rakshasas, गुप्तांवै protected, लङ्कां Lanka, ददर्श witnessed.

Raghava accompanied by the army happily went near and witnessed Lanka filled with Rakshasas all over.
दृष्ट्वादाशरथिर्लङ्कांचित्रध्वजपताकिनीम् ।

जगामसहसासीतांदूयमानेनचेतसा ।।6.42.7।।


दाशरथि son of Dasaratha, चित्रध्वजपताकिनीम् decorated with flags and posts, लङ्कां Lanka, चेतसा thinking, सीतां of Sita, दूयमानेन worried, सहसा very much, जगाम remained.

The son of Dasaratha saw Lanka decorated with flags and posts and thinking of Sita he became very worried.
अत्रसामृगशावाक्षीमत्कृतेजनकात्मजा ।

पीड्यतेशोकसन्तप्ताकृशास्थण्डिलशायिनी ।।6.42.8।।


अत्र here, सा she, मृगशावाक्षी dove eyed, जनकात्मजा Janaka's daughter, पीड्यते tormented, मत्कृते because of me, शोकसन्तप्ता immersed in sorrow, कृशा emaciated, स्थण्डिलशायिनी without food struggling.

"Here (Lanka) is the daughter of Janaka, immersed in sorrow because of me, tormented and emaciated without food and struggling."
पीड्यमानांसधर्मात्मावैदेहीमनुचिन्तयन् ।

क्षिप्रमाज्ञापयामासवानरान्द्विषतांवधे ।।6.42.9।।


धर्मात्मा righteous, स: he (Rama), पीड्यमानां pained, वैदेहीम Vaidehi, अचिन्तयन् thinking of very much, क्षिप्रमाज्ञापयामास immediately ordered, वानरान् Vanaras, द्विषतां enemies, वधे to kill.

Thinking of Vaidehi again and again, who is pained, Rama ordered the Vanaras to kill the enemies immediately.
एवमुक्तेतुवचनेरामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।

संघर्षमाणाःप्लवगाःसिम्हनादैरनादयन् ।।6.42.10।।


क्लिष्टकर्मणा one who does not cause sorrow, एवमुक्ते having ordered that way तु, वचने his words, प्लवगाः monkeys, संघर्षमाणाः getting ready for war, सिम्हनादैरनादयन् roared like a lion

Ordered in that way by Rama, who does not cause sorrow, the monkeys roared like lions getting ready for war on hearing Rama's words.
शिखरैर्विकिरामैनांलङ्कांमुष्टिभिरेववा ।

इतिस्मदधिरेसर्वेमनांसिहरियूथपाः ।।6.42.11।।


हरियूथपाः Vanara troops, लङ्कां Lanka, शिखरैर्विकिरामैनां with mountain peaks, मुष्टिभिरेववा or with fists, इति this, स्मदधिरे will crush, सर्वे all, मनांसि thought.

The monkey troops thought of crushing Lanka with their fists and mountain peaks.
उद्यम्यगिरिशृङ्गाणिशिखराणिमहान्तिच ।

तरूंश्चोत्पाट्यविविधांस्तिष्ठन्तिहरियूथपाः ।।6.42.12।।


हरियूथपाः Vanara leaders, गिरिशृङ्गाणि mountains, शिखराणि peaks, तरूंश्चोत्पाट्य holding trees, महान्तिच huge, विविधां many kinds, स्तिष्ठन्ति ready to fight.

Holding the mountain peaks, huge trees of many kinds, the Vanara leaders stood ready to fight.
प्रेक्षतोराक्षसेन्द्रस्यतान्यनीकानिभागशः ।

राघवप्रियकामार्थंलङ्कामारुरुहुस्तदा ।।6.42.13।।


राक्षसेन्द्रस्य king of Rakshasas, प्रेक्षतो as he was looking, तान्यनीकानि all the Vanara army, राघवप्रियकामार्थं to make Rama happy, भागशः in divisions, लङ्काम Lanka, आरुरुहुस्तदा ascended the boundary.

To make Rama happy, all the Vanara army divided into groups and started ascending the boundary (of Lanka) walls the king of Rakshasas was witnessing.
तेताम्रवक्त्राहेमाभारामार्थेत्यक्तजीविताः ।

लङ्कामेवाभ्यवर्तन्तसालतालशिलायुधाः ।।6.42.14।।


ताम्रवक्त्रा having copper colour faces, हेमाभा golden coloured, रामार्थे for the sake of Rama, त्यक्तजीविताः giving up life, सालतालशिलायुधाः Sala, Tala trees and rocks as weapons, लङ्कामेवाभ्यवर्तन्त went to Lanka.

Vanaras of copper colour faces and golden coloured ones, dedicating their lives for the sake of Rama holding Sala trees and rocks went towards Lanka.
तेद्रुमैःपर्वताग्रैश्चमुष्टिभिश्चप्लवङ्गमाः ।

प्राकाराग्राण्यरण्यानिममन्थुस्तोरणानिच ।।6.42.15।।


ते they (Vanaras ), द्रुमैः trees, पर्वताग्रैश्च peaks of mountains, मुष्टिभिश्च even with fists, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, प्राकाराग्रा top of boundary, अरण्यानि forests, ममन्थुस्तोरणानिच gateways of the city

With the means of mountain peaks, as well as their fists, the Vanaras scaled the boundary walls and gateways of the city.
पारिखाःपूरयन्तिस्मप्रसन्नसलिलायुताः ।

पांसुभिःपर्वताग्रैश्चतृणैःकाष्ठैश्चवानराः ।।6.42.16 ।।

वानराः Vanaras, पारिखाः with soil, पर्वताग्रैश्च with mountain peaks, तृणैः with grass, काष्ठैश्च wooden pieces, पांसुभिः moats also, प्रसन्नसलिलायुताः with pure water, पूरयन्ति filled.

The Vanaras started filling the moats with soil, pure water, logs of wood, grass, and mountain peaks.
ततःसहस्रयूथाश्चकोटीयूथाश्चवानराः ।

कोटीशतयुताश्चान्येलङ्कामारुरुहुस्तदा ।।6.42.17।।


ततः then, वानराः Vanaras, सहस्रयूथाश्च thousand, कोटीयूथाश्च one crore, कोटीशतयुताश्चान्ये hundred crores, लङ्काम into Lanka, आरुरुहुस्तदा ascended then.

Then the Vanaras in thousands and crores ascended Lanka.
काञ्चनानिप्रमृद्नन्तस्तोरणानिप्लवङ्गमाः ।

कैलासशिखराभानिगोपुराणिप्रमथ्यच ।।6.42.18।।


काञ्चनानि golden, प्रमृद्नन्तस्तोरणानि breaking the gateways, कैलासशिखराभानि like the peaks of Kailasa mountain, गोपुराणि towers, प्रमथ्यच crushing, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys went.

The Vanaras started breaking the golden gateways and crushing them which were like peaks of Kailasa mountain.
आप्लवन्तःप्लवन्तश्चगर्जन्तश्चप्लवङ्गमाः ।

लङ्कांतामभिधावन्तिमहावारणसंनिभाः ।।6.42.19।।


आप्लवन्तः jumping here and there, महावारणसंनिभाः like huge elephants, प्लवन्तश्च Vanaras, गर्जन्तश्च roaring like lion, लङ्कांतामभिधावन्ति went up to Lanka.

Jumping here and there like huge elephants, the Vanaras roaring like lions went into Lanka.
जयत्यतिबलोरामोलक्ष्मणश्चमहाबलः ।

राजाजयतिसुग्रीवोराघवेणाभिपालितः ।।6.42.20।।


जयत्य victorious, अतिबलो exceedingly strong, रामो Rama, महाबलः endowed with supreme, strength, लक्ष्मणश्च Lakshmana also, राजा king, जयति victorious, सुग्रीवो Sugriva, राघवेण by Raghava, अभिपालितः protected by on all sides.

"Victorious is Sri Rama, who is exceedingly strong and Lakshmana who is endowed with supreme strength. Victorious is Sugriva the king of Vanaras who is protected by Raghava on all sides."
इत्येवंघोषयन्तश्चगर्जन्तश्चप्लवङ्गमाः ।

अभ्यधावन्तलङ्कायाःप्राकारंकामरूपिणः ।।6.42.21।।


कामरूपिणः who could change their form at will, इत्येवं in this manner, घोषयन्तश्च shouting, गर्जन्तश्च roaring, लङ्कायाः into Lanka, प्राकारं defensive walls, अभ्यधावन्त rushed over.

Shouting in that manner, the monkeys who could change their form at their will started roaring and rushed towards the defensive walls.
वीरबाहुःसुबाहुश्चनलश्चवनगोचरः ।

निपीड्योपनिविष्टास्तेप्राकारंहरियूथपाः ।

एतस्मिन्नन्तरेचक्रुःस्कन्धावारनिवेशनम् ।।6.42.22 ।।

वीरबाहुः Veerabahu, सुबाहुश्च and Subahu, नल Nala, वनगोचरः foremost of monkeys, निपीड्योप storming, निविष्टास्ते defensive, प्राकारं boundary walls, हरियूथपाः Vanara leaders, एतस्मिन्नन्तरे in the meantime inside, चक्रुः went, स्कन्धावारनिवेशनम् remained stationed at northeast.

Veerabahu, Subahu, Nala and the foremost of the Vanara leaders storming the boundary walls in the meantime went inside and stationed at the northeast gate.
पूर्वद्वारंतुकुमुदःकोटीभिर्दशभिर्वृतः ।

आवृत्यबलवांस्तस्थौहरिभिर्जितकाशिभिः ।।6.42.23।।

प्रघसो Praghasa, हरिः monkey, महाबाहु broad shouldered, पनसश्च Panasa also, वानर Vanaras, साहाय्यार्थं for assisting, तस्यैव himself, निविष्टः encamped, बहुभि many, आर्वृतः surrounded.

Praghasa the broad shouldered Vanara, was surrounded by Panasa for assisting him who encamped surrounded by many.
दक्षिणंद्वारमागम्यवीरःशतबलिःकपिः ।

आवृत्यबलवांस्तस्थौविंशत्याकोटिभिर्वृतः ।।6.42.25।।

सन्नद्धस्तुमहावीर्योगदापाणिर्विभीषणः ।

Then shone the white discs like the moon beaten by the Rakshasas with gold sticks making terrific sound.
विनेदुश्चमहाघोषाःशङ्खाःशतसहस्रशः ।

राक्षसानांसुघोराणांमुखमारुतपूरिताः ।।6.42.35।।


राक्षसानां Rakshasas, सुघोराणां terrific sounds, शतसहस्रशः hundred thousand, महाघोषाः loud noise, शङ्खाः with conchs, विनेदुश्च sonorous, मुखमारुत with wind from their mouth, पूरिताः blown.

तेबभुःशुभनीलाङ्गाःसशङ्खारजनीचराः ।

विद्युन्मण्डलसन्नद्धाःसबलाकाइवाम्बुदाः ।।6.42.36।।

शङ्खदुन्दुभिसंघुष्टः blast of conchs and roll of drums, सिम्हनाद roar of lions, स्तरस्विनाम् and of Vanara and Rakshasa heroes, पृथिवीं earth, चान्तरिक्षंच to sky, सागरंचैव up to ocean, नादयन् resounded.

By the blast of conchs and roll of drums, and roar of lions of Vanara and Rakshasa forces it resounded all over the earth, sky and up to the ocean.
गजानांबृंहितैःसार्धंहयानांहेषितैरपि ।

रथानांनेमिघोषैश्चरक्षसाम्वदनस्वनः ।।6.42.40 ।।

गजानां of elephants, बृंहितैः trumpeting, सार्धंहयानां neighing of horses, हेषितैरपि clatter of wheels, रथानां of chariots, नेमिघोषैश्च shout of, रक्षसाम्, Rakshasas, वदनस्वनः resounded in the air.

The trumpeting of the elephants, the neighing of horses, the clatter of the wheels of the chariots and the shout of Rakshasas resounded in the air.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरेघोरःसङ्ग्रामःसमवर्तत ।

रक्षसांवानराणांचयथादेवासुरेपुरा ।।6.42.41।।

राजा king, जयति victory, सुग्रीव Sugriva, इति thus, शब्दो sound, महानभूत् be triumphant, राजन् king, जय victorious, जयेत्युक्त्वा saying victory to you, स्वस्वनामकथान्ततः arose war cry from the Vanaras.

"May the vanara king,triumphant Sugriva be victorious", thus sounded the cry of vanaras in the battlefield.
तथावृक्षैर्महाकायाःपर्वताग्रैश्चवानराः ।

निजघ्नुस्तानिरक्षांसिनखैर्दन्तैश्चवेगिताः ।।6.42.44।।


तथा in the same manner, वृक्षैर्महाकायाः with trees, पर्वताग्रैश्च with mountain peaks, वानराः Vanaras, रक्षांसि at Rakshasas, नखैर्दन्तैश्च with nails and teeth, निजघ्नुस्तानि attacked, वेगिताः swiftly.

Vanaras in the same manner attacked the Rakshasas, with trees and mountains, swiftly and with their nails and teeth.
राक्षसास्त्वपरेभीमाःप्राकारस्थामहीगतान् ।

भिन्दिपालैश्चखड्गैश्चशूलैश्चैवव्यदारयन् ।।6.42.45।।


राक्षसास्त्वपरे redoubtable Rakshasas, प्राकारस्था standing on the walls, भीमाः dreadful, भिन्दिपालैश्च Bhindipalas (javelin like weapons), खड्गैश्च and swords, शूलैश्चैव with tridents, व्यदारयन् pierced.

Standing on the walls, the redoubtable Rakshasas, pierced the Vanaras with swords, dreadful Bhindipalas.
वानराश्चापिसङ्क्रुद्धाःप्राकारस्थान्महीगताः ।

राक्षसान्पातयामासुःसमाप्लुत्यप्लवङ्गमाः ।।6.42.46।।


प्राकारस्थान्महीगताः stationed on the boundary walls, वानराश्चापि Vanaras also, राक्षसान्पातयामासुः dragged down the Rakshasas, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, समाप्लुत्य jumping up.

The vanaras jumping up dragged the Rakshasas stationed on the boundary wall down to the ground.
ससम्प्रहारस्तुमुलोमांसशोणितकर्दमः ।

रक्षसांवानराणांचसम्बभूवाद्भुतोपमाः।।6.42.47।।


स that, सम्प्रहार conflict, रक्षसां of Rakshasas, वानराणांच and Vanaras, तमुलो intense, मांस flesh, शोणित blood, कर्दमः like mire, सम्बभूवा that happened, अद्भुतोपमाः was amazing.

The conflict that happened between the Rakshasas and Vanaras was amazing and intense and left a mire of flesh and blood.
