Sloka & Translation

[Hanuman and others guard Rama and Lakshmana. Ravana commands Rakshasa woman to take Sita in the Pushpaka and show her the state of Rama and Lakshmana. Sita bursts on seeing the fate of Rama and Lakshmana.]

प्रतिप्रविष्टेलङ्कायांकृतार्थेरावणात्मजे ।

राघवंपरिवार्यार्तुरक्षुर्वानरर्षभाः ।।6.47.1।।


पति king, रावणात्मजे Ravana's son, कृतार्थे accomplished the task, लङ्कायाम् into Lanka, प्रविष्टे entered, अथ and then, वानरर्षभाः bull among monkeys, राघवम् at Raghava, परिवार्यार्तुः around, ररक्षुः guarded.

After accomplishing the task Ravana's son entered Lanka while the bull among monkeys guarded Raghava staying around.
हनुमानङ्गदोनीलःसुषेणःकुमुदोनलः ।

गजोगवाक्षोगवयश्शरभोगन्धमादनः ।।6.47.2।।

जाम्बवानृषभःसुन्दोरम्भःशतवलिःपृथुः ।

व्यूढानीकाश्चयत्ताश्चद्रुमानादायसर्वतः ।।6.47.3।।

वीक्षमाणादिशस्सर्वास्तिर्यगूर्ध्वंचवानराः ।

तृणेष्वपिचचेष्टत्सुराक्षसाइतिमेनिरे ।।6.47.4।।


हनुमान् Hanuman, अङ्गदः Angada, नीलः Nila, सुषेणः Sushena, कुमुदः Kumuda, नलः Nala, गवयः Gava, शरभः Sarabha, गन्धमादनः Gandhamadana, सानुप्रस्थः Sanuprastha, जाम्बवान् Jambavan, ऋषभः Rshaba, सुन्दः Sandhu, रम्भः Rambha, शतवलिः Satavali, पृथुः Pruthu, वानराः Vanara, सर्वतः always, व्यूढानीका having arranged, यत्ताश्च in place, द्रुमान् trees, आदाय getting, सर्वाः all, दिशः directions, तिर्यक् above, ऊर्ध्वंच either side, वीक्षमाणाः looking, तृणेष्वपि even a blade of grass, चेष्टत्सु moved, राक्षसाःइति thinking to be Rakshasas, मेनिरे watched.

Having arranged the army in place, Hanuman, Angada, Nila, Kumuda, Nala, Gava, Sarabha, Gandhamadana, Sanuprastha, Jambavan, Rshaba, Rambha, Satavali, Pruthu, who are always alert were holding trees and looking above, on either side and in all directions and guarded Rama. Whenever there was movement of even a blade of grass, they thought that it might be Rakshasa.
रावणश्चापिसम्हृष्टोविसृज्येन्द्रजितंसुतम् ।

अजुहावततस्सीताक्षिणीराक्षसीस्तदा ।।6.47.5।।


रावणश्चापि Ravana also, सम्हृष्टः contended, सुतम् son, इन्द्रजितम् Indrajith, विसृज्य sending away, ततः then, सीताक्षिणीः caretaker of Sita, राक्षसीः rakshasi, तदा then, आजुहाव called for.

Ravana was also content to send away his son Indrajith and calls for the Rakshasa woman, caretaker of Sita.
राक्षस्यस्त्रिजटाचैवशासनात्समुपस्थिताः ।

ताउवाचततोहृष्टोराक्षसीराक्षसाधमः ।।6.47.6।।


राक्षस्यः rakshasi, त्रिजटाचैव Trijata also, शासनात् by the order, तम् his, उपस्थिताः waited, ततः there, हृष्टः joyful, राक्षसाधमः lowly Rakshasa, ताःराक्षसीः that rakshasi, उवाच addressed.

The rakshasi and also Trijata came and waited there by the order. Lowly Rakshasa, Ravana, full of joy addressed rakshasi.
हताविन्द्रजिताख्यातवैदेह्यारामलक्ष्मणौ ।

पुष्पकंतत्समारोप्यदर्शयध्वंहतौरणे ।।6.47.7।।


रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, इन्द्रता by Indrajith, हतौ killed, वैदेह्याः to Vaidehi, तत् that, पुष्पकम् aerial car, समारोप्य ascended, रणे war, हतौ killed, दर्शयध्वम् you may show.

"Rama and Lakshmana are killed by Indrajith in war. Take Vaidehi in the aerial car and show her."
यदाश्रयादवष्टब्धामामुपतिष्ठति ।

सोऽस्याभर्तासहभ्रात्रानिहतोरणमूर्धनि ।।6.47.8।।


इयम् that husband, यताश्रयात् with whose support, अवष्टब्धा being proud, माम् to me, नउपतिष्ठते not yielding, सः he, अस्याः, भर्ता husband, रणमूर्धनि unconscious in the war, भ्रात्रासह along with brother, निहतः has been killed.

"That husband with whose support she was proud and not yielding to me is unconscious along with his brother who have been killed," said Ravana.
निर्विशङ्कानिरुद्विग्नानिरपेक्षाचमैथिली ।

मामुपस्थास्यतेसीतासर्वाभरणभूषिता ।।6.47.9।।


मैथिली Mythili, सीता Sita, निर्विशङ्का rid of sorrow, निरुद्विग्ना free from perturbation, निरपेक्षा giving up hope, सर्वाभरणभूषिता adorned with all kinds of jewels, माम् me, उपस्थास्यते wait on me.

"Mythili, rid of sorrow and free from perturbation, giving up hope (of Rama) can wait upon me adorned with all kinds of jewels."
अद्यकालवशंप्राप्तंरणेरामंसलक्ष्मणम् ।

अवेक्ष्यविनिवृत्तासाचान्यांगतिमपश्यती ।।6.47.10।।

निरपेक्षाविशालाक्षीमामुपस्थास्यतेस्वयम् ।


विशालाक्षी broad eyed, सा that, अद्य coming to conclusion, रणे war, सलक्ष्मणम् along with Lakshmana, रामम् Rama, कालवशम् in course of time, गतम् gone, अवेक्ष्य seek, विनिवृत्ता, अन्याम् no other, गतिम् haven, अपश्यती will seek, निरपेक्षा getting rid of hope, स्वयम् Ravana, माम् me, उपस्थास्यते will on her own accord.

Ravana thought that the broad eyed Sita coming to conclusion in course of time that Rama has gone along with Lakshmana, rid of hope, with no other haven, will seek him on her own accord.
तस्यतद्वचनंश्रुत्वारावणस्यदुरात्मनः ।।6.47.11।।

राक्षस्यस्तास्तथेत्युक्त्वाजग्मुर्वैयत्रपुष्पकम् ।


ताःराक्षस्यः those Rakshasas, दुरात्मनः evil minded, तस्यरावणस्य that Ravana's, तत् वचनम् those words, श्रुत्वा hearing, तथाइति thus, उक्त्वा said, पुष्पकम् aerial car, यत्र there, जग्मुःवै went.

The evil minded Rakshasas listening to Ravana's words went to the aerial car.
ततःपुष्पकमादायराक्षस्योरावणाज्ञया ।।6.47.12।।

अशोकवनिकास्थांतांमैथिलींसमुपानयन् ।


ततः thereafter, राक्षस्यः Rakshasas, रावणाज्ञया by Ravana's order, पुष्पकम् aerial car, आदाय went, अशोकवनिकासंस्थाम् in the Ashoka garden, ताम् they, मैथिलीम् Mythili, समुपानयन् went near.

Thereafter, by Ravana's order the Rakshasas went with the aerial car to Mythili in the Ashoka Garden.
तामादायतुराक्षस्योभर्तृशोकपराजिताम् ।।6.47.13।।

सीतामारोपयामासुर्विमानंपुष्पकंतदा ।


तदा then, राक्षस्यः Rakshasas, भर्तृशोकपराजिताम् overcome by husband 's grief, तांसीताम् that Sita, आदाय went near, पुष्पकंविमानम् Pushpaka aerial car, आरोपयामासुः to ascend.

Then the Rakshasas took the aerial car near Sita who was overcome by her husband's grief.
ततःपुष्पकमारोप्यसीतांत्रिजटयासह ।।6.47.14।।

जग्मुर्दर्शयितुंतस्यैराक्षस्योरामलक्ष्मणौ ।


ततः thereafter, राक्षस्यः Rakshasas, त्रिजटयासह along with Trijata, सीताम् to Sita, पुष्पकम् Pushpaka आरोप्य making to ascend, तस्यै that, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, दर्शयितुम् to see, जग्मुः went.

Thereafter the Rakshasas along with Trijata went to Sita and made her ascend Pushpaka to see Rama and Lakshmana.
रावणोऽकारयल्लङ्कांपताकाध्वजमालिनीम् ।।6.47.15।।

प्राघोषयतहृष्टश्चलङ्कायांराक्षसेश्वरः ।

राघवोलक्ष्मणश्चैवहताविन्द्रजितारणे ।।6.47.16।।


राक्षसेश्वरः Lord of Rakshasas, रावणः Ravana, हृष्टः rejoiced, लङ्काम् Lanka, पताकाध्वजमालिनीम् with rows of flags and posts, कारयामास made decorations, राघवः Raghava, लक्ष्मणश्चैव and Lakshmana, इन्द्रजिता by Indrajith, रणे in war, हतौ killed, प्राघोषयत proclaimed.

The Lord of Rakshasas rejoiced and went to Lanka decorated with flags and posts proclaiming that Rama and Lakshmana were killed by Indrajith in war.
विमानेनापिगत्वातुसीतात्रिजटयासह ।

ददर्शवानराणांतुसर्वंसैन्यंनिपातितम् ।।6.47.17।।


सीता Sita, त्रिजटयासह with Trijata, विमानेन on the Pushpaka, गत्वा going, निपातितम् fallen, सर्वम् all, वानराणांसैन्यम् Vanara army, ददर्श saw.

Sita and Trijata flying on the Pushpaka saw all the fallen Vanara army.
प्रहृष्टमनसश्चापिददर्शपिशिताशनान् ।

वानरांश्चातिदुःखार्तान्रामलक्ष्मणपार्श्वतः ।।6.47.18।।


प्रहृष्टमनसः extremely happy, पिशिताशनान् grief stricken, रामलक्ष्मणपार्श्वतः near Rama and Lakshmana, अतिदुःखार्तान् very much agonised, वानरांश्च Vanaras also, ददर्श beheld.

Sita beheld extremely happy Rakshasas, and grief stricken Vanaras, in great agony near Rama and Lakshmana.
ततस्सीताददर्शोभौशयानौशरतल्पगौ ।

लक्ष्मणंचापिरामंचविसंज्ञौशरपीडितौ ।।6.47.19।।

विध्वस्तकवचौवीरौविप्रविद्धशरासनौ ।

सायकैचशिन्नसर्वाङ्गौशरस्तम्बमयौक्षितौ ।।6.47.20।।


ततः thereafter, सीता Sita, शयानौ lying, शरतल्पगौ on the bed of arrows, विसंज्ञौ unconscious, शरपीडितौ struck by arrows, विध्वस्तकवचौ with shield of darts, वीरौ heroes, विप्रविद्धशरासनौ lying on bed of arrows, सायकैः arrows with feathers, भिन्नसर्वाङ्गौ all limbs wounded with shattered armour and bows, क्षितौ broken, शरस्तम्बमयौ reeds of arrows, उभौ both, लक्ष्मणंचापि Lakshmana with, रामंच Rama, ददर्श beheld.

Thereafter Sita beheld both Rama and Lakshmana lying on the bed of arrows, unconscious, struck by arrows, with shields of darts, arrows with feathers, all limbs wounded with shattered armour, bows and reeds.
तौदृष्टवाभ्रातरौतत्रप्रवीरौपुरुषर्षभौ ।

शयानौपुण्डरीकाक्षौकुमाराविवपावकी ।।6.47.21।।

शरतल्पगतौवीरौतथाभूतानरर्षभौ ।

दुःखार्ताकरुणंसीतासुभृशंविललापह ।।6.47.22।।


प्रवीरौ gallant, पुरुर्षभौ bulls among men, पुण्डरीकाक्षौ with big eyes like that of Indra, पावकी fire, वीरौ heroes, कुमाराविव sons like, शरतल्पगतौ lying on the bed of arrows, तत्र there, शयानौ lying, तथाभूतौ in such a state, नरर्षभौ best among men, तौभ्रातरौ those two brothers, दृष्टवा beholding, सीता Sita, दुःखार्ता filled with sorrow, करुणम् piteously, सुभृशम् exceedingly affected, विललापह burst into tears.

Seeing the gallant bulls among men, the two brothers with big eyes, the two heroes like sons of fire god lying on the bed of arrows in such a state, Sita was filled with intense sorrow and pity burst into tears being affected extremely.
भर्तारमनवद्याङ्गीलक्ष्मणंचासितेक्षणा ।

प्रेक्ष्यपांसुषुचेष्टन्तौरुरोदजनकात्मजा ।।6.47.23।।


अनवद्याङ्गी of defect less limbs, असितेक्षणा darkeyed, जनकात्मजा J anaka's daughter, पांसुषु rolling, चेष्टन्तौ both powerful, भर्तारम् at the husband, लक्ष्मणंच and Lakshmana, प्रेक्ष्य seeing, रुरोद roared aloud.

Janaka's daughter of beautiful limbs and dark eyes, seeing her husband and Lakshmana, both powerful ones rolling, roared aloud.
सबाष्पशोकाभिहतासमीक्ष्यतौभ्रातरौदेवसमप्रभावौ ।

वितर्कयन्तीनिधनंतयोस्सादुःखान्वितावाक्यमिदंजगाद ।।6.47.24।।


सबाष्पशोकाभिहता as tears were rolling, सा she, देवसमप्रभाव equal to gods in glory, तौभ्रातरौ brothers, समीक्ष्य beholding, तयोः both of them, निधनम् died, वितर्कयन्ती suspecting, दुःखान्विता immersed in grief, इदम् these, वाक्यम् words, जगाद said.

As tears were rolling down her eyes, beholding the brothers who were equal to gods in their glory, suspecting them to be dead Sita spoke these words
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेसप्तचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the forty seventh sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
