[Sita gets immersed in grief. Trijata reassures her and takes her back to Ashoka grove.]

भर्तारंनिहतंदृष्टवालक्ष्मणंचमहाबलम् ।

विललापभृशंसीताकरुणंशोककर्शिता ।।6.48.1।।


सीता Sita, निहतम् killed, भर्तारम् husband, महाबलम् mighty, लक्ष्मणंच Lakshmana also, दृष्टवा seeing, भृशम् intense, शोककर्शिता emotional in sorrow, करुणम् piteously, विललाप cried.

On seeing her husband killed and also mighty Lakshmana, Sita became emotional in intense sorrow and cried piteously.
ऊचुर्लक्षणिकायेमांपुत्रिण्यविधवेतिच ।

तेऽद्यसर्वेहतेरामेज्ञानिनोऽनृतवादिनः ।।6.48.2।।


ये whoever, लक्षणिकाः capable of predicting, माम् my, पुत्रिणी mother of sons, अविधवेतिच not become a widow, ऊचुः told, ते they, ज्ञानिनः knowledgeable, capable of reading future, अद्य their, रामे Rama, हते killed, अनृतवादिनः liars.

"Whoever was capable of predicting the future have said that I will be the mother of sons and not become a widow. Now if Rama is dead, they become liars."
यज्वनोमहिषींयेमामूचुःपत्नींचसत्त्रिणः ।

तेऽद्यसर्वेहतेरामेज्ञानिनोऽनृतवादिनः ।।6.48.3।।


ये whoever, माम् me, यज्वनः men who conduct sacrificial ceremonies, महिषीम् consort, सत्त्रिणः knowledgeable of sastras, पन्तीम् with wife, ऊचुः told, सर्वे all, तेज्ञानिनः those wise, अद्य told, रामे Rama, हते is dead, अनृतवादिनः liars.

"Whoever conducted sacrificial ceremonies and are knowledgeable of sastras have told me that I would be consort. They are all liars now as Rama is killed."
ऊचुस्संश्रवणेयेमांद्विजाःकार्तान्तिकाश्शुभाम् ।

तेऽद्यसर्वेहतेरामेज्ञानिनोऽनृतवादिनः ।।6.48.4।।


कार्तान्तिकाः those astrologers, ये whoever, द्विजाः brahmins, संश्रवणे promised, माम् my शुभाम् auspicious, ऊचुः spoken, ते they, सर्वे all, ज्ञानिनः wise, अद्य, रामे Rama, हते killed, अनृतवादिनः liars.

"The astrologers, brahmins who have promised me to be auspicious and all the wise who have spoken are liars if Rama is killed."
वीरपार्थिवपत्नीत्वांयेविदुर्भर्तृपूजिताम् ।

तेऽद्यसर्वेहतेरामेज्ञानिनोऽनृतवादिनः ।।6.48.5।।


वीरपार्थिवपत्नी wife of man of great prowess, त्वाम् you, भर्तृपूजिताम् worshipped by husband, ये whoever, विदुः know, ते they, सर्वे all, ज्ञानिनः wise men, अद्य predicted, रामे Rama, हते killed, अनृतवादिनः liars.

"Whoever has told me that I will be the wife of a man of great prowess, worshipped by husband, and all wise men are liars if Rama is killed."
इमानिखलुपद्मानिपादयोर्यैःकुलस्त्रियः ।

अधिराज्येऽभिषिच्यन्तेनरेन्द्रैःपतिभिःसह ।।6.48.6।।


पादयोः on the sole of my feet, इमानि such, पद्मानिखलु lotus marks, यैः whose, कुलस्त्रियः virtuous women, नरेन्द्रैः king, पतिभिःसह husband also, अधिराज्ये kingdom, अभिषिच्यन्ते will be crowned.

"Those virtuous lotus marks that a woman has on their feet to become crowned queen of a kingdom are seen in my feet."
वैधव्यंयान्तियैर्नार्योऽलक्षणैर्भाग्यदुर्लभाः ।

नात्मनन्तानिपश्यामिपश्यन्तीहतलक्षणा ।।6.48.7।।


हतलक्षणा auspicious signs gone, पश्यन्ती to see, भागदुर्लभाः very difficult, नार्यः noble, यैः whoever, अलक्षणैःवैधव्यम् inauspicious widowed, यान्ति indeed, तानि not in me, आत्मनः myself, नपश्यामि do not see.

"Those inauspicious signs found in unlucky and widowed women are difficult to find in me. I do not see any such signs in me."
सत्यनामानिपद्मानिस्त्रीणामुक्तानिलक्षणैः ।

तान्यद्यनिहतेरामेवितथानिभवन्तिमे ।।6.48.8।।


लक्षणैः characteristic marks, पद्मानि lotuses, स्त्रीणाम् in sastras, सत्यनानामानि truthful lines, उक्तानि told, मे my, तानि such, अद्य, रामे Rama, निहते killed, वितथानि false, भवन्ति will be.

"Characteristic marks of lotuses, unfailing in their effect (truthful) predicted are all false if Rama is killed."
केशास्सूक्ष्मास्समानीलाभ्रुवौचासंहतेमम ।

वृत्तेचारोमकेजङ्घेदन्ताश्चाविरळामम ।।6.48.9।।


मम my, केशाः hair, सूक्ष्माः fine, नीलाः dark, समाः uniform, भ्रुवौच my eyebrows, असंहते not joined, मम my, जङ्घे shanks, वृत्ते round, अरोमके devoid of hair, दन्ताश्च teeth, अविरलाः closely set.

"My hair is fine and dark, my eyebrows are uniform and not joined, my shanks are round devoid of hair, and my teeth are closely set."
शङ्खेनेत्रेकरौपादौगुल्फावूरूचमेचितौ ।

अनुवृत्तनखास्स्निग्धास्समाश्चाङ्गुलयोमम ।।6.48.10।।


मम my, शङ्खे temporal bones, नेत्रे eyes, करौ hand s, पादौ feet, गुल्फौ ankles, ऊरू thighs, समौ even, चितौ fleshy, अङ्गुलयः fingers, अनुवृत्तनखाः nails are round, स्निग्धाः well proportioned, समाश्च and bright.

"My temporal bones, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, thighs are even, and my fingers are fleshy and round with nails proportioned and bright."
स्तनौचाविरळौमामकौमग्नचूचुकौ ।

मग्नाचोत्सङ्गिनीनाभःपार्श्वोरस्कंचमेचितम् ।।6.48.11।।


मामकौ my, स्तनौ breast, अविरळौ well formed, पीनौ developed, मग्नचूचुकौ depressed nipples, उत्सङ्गिनी joined, नाभिः navel, मग्ना deep, मे my, पार्श्वोरस्कंच and the surrounding area, चितम् fleshy.

"My breasts are well formed and developed, the nipples are depressed and joined, the navel is deep, and the surrounding part is fleshy."
ममवर्णोमणिनिभोमृदून्यङ्गरुहाणिच ।

प्रतिष्ठितांद्वादशभिर्मामूचुश्शुभलक्षणाम् ।।6.48.12।।


मम my, वर्णः colour, मणिनिभः shine of gem, अङ्गरुहाणि hair on my skin, मृदूनि soft, द्वादशभिः ten fingers and toes, प्रतिष्ठिताम् when placed on the ground, माम् me, शुभलक्षणाम् auspicious marks, ऊचुः said to be.

"My complexion is like the shine of a gem. My hair on the skin is soft. When I touch the ground with my ten fingers and toes, it is said to leave auspicious marks."
समग्रयवमच्छ्रिद्रपाणिपादंचवर्णवत् ।

मन्दस्मितेत्येवचमांकन्यालाक्षणिनोद्विजाः ।।6.48.13।।


पाणिपादंच palms and feet, समग्रयवम् with no space in between, अच्छ्रिद्रम् collected, वर्णवत् described, मन्दस्मिता gentle smile, इति thus, माम् myself, कन्यालाक्षणिनः marks of auspiciousness, द्विजाः brahmins.

"My palms and feet placed together have no space which are auspicious marks and brahmins have said that my gentle smile is also a mark of auspiciousness."
आधिराज्येऽभिषेकोमेब्राह्मणैःपतिनासह ।

कृतान्तकुशलैरुक्तंतत्सर्वंवितथीकृतम् ।।6.48.14।।


पतिनासह with husband, मे I, आधिराज्याभिषेकः consecrated, कृतान्तकुशलैः astrologers prediction, ब्राह्मणैः by brahmins, उक्तम् said, तत् सर्वम् all that, वितथीकृतम् falsified.

"The prediction of astrologers that I will be consecrated with my husband and all that is falsified."
शोधयित्वाजनस्थानंप्रवृततिमुपलभ्यच ।

तीर्त्वासागरमक्षोभ्यंभ्रातरौगोष्पदेहतौ ।।6.48.15।।


जनस्थानम् Janasthana, शोधयित्वा in search of me, प्रवृततिम् knowing my where about, उपलभ्यच to get me, अक्षोभ्यम् impossible, सागरम् ocean, तीर्त्वा crossing, भ्रातरौ brothers, गोष्पदे maya of Indrajith which is like foot print of cow's hoof, हतौ killed.

"Having gained Janasthana and crossing the ocean which is impossible knowing about my whereabouts and getting me is impossible since the brothers have been killed by the maya of Indrajith whose footprints are like a cow's hoof."
ननुवारुणमाग्नेयमैन्द्रंवायव्यमेवच ।

अस्त्रंब्रह्मशिरश्चैवप्रत्यपद्यताम् ।।6.48.16।।


राघवौ Raghavas, वारुणम् Varuna weapons, आग्नेयम् fire weapons, ऐन्द्रम् Indra's, वायव्यमेवच and even wind god's, ब्रह्मशिरःअस्त्रंच even Brahma's, प्रत्यपद्यतांननु why have they not used

"Raghavas knew to use Varuna's weapons, fire god's weapons, Indra's also, even wind god's and Brahma's weapons. Why have they not used?"
अदृश्यमानेनरणेमाययावासवोपमौ ।

ममनाथावनाथायानिहतौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।।6.48.17।।


अनाथायाः orphaned, मम I am, नाथौ dear husband, वासनोपमौ equal to Indra in valour, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, रणे in war, मायया by conjuring trick, अदृश्यमानेन by being invisible, निहतौ killed

"Indrajith remaining invisible in war by conjuring could kill my husband who is equal to Indra in valour. Rama and Lakshmana! I am orphaned now."
नहिदृष्टिपथंप्राप्यराघवस्यरणेरिपुः ।

जीवन्प्रन्तिवर्तेतयद्यपिस्यान्मनोजवः ।।6.48.18।।


रिपुः enemy, मनोजवः who is endowed with speed in thought, स्याद्यद्यपि if seen, रणे in war, राघवस्य by Rama, दृष्टिपथम् range of sight, प्राप्य happens, जीवन् life, नप्रन्तिवर्ततेहि not go alive.

"Even if the enemy is endowed with speed of thought, if he comes in the range of Rama's sight, he will not go alive."
नकलस्यातिभारोऽस्तिकृतान्तश्चसुदुर्जयः ।

यत्ररामःसहभ्रात्राशेतेयुधिनिपातितः ।।6.48.19।।


यत्र since, रामः Rama, भ्रात्रासह with his brother, युधि in the battle, निपातितः fallen, शेते lies, कालस्य time spirit, अतिभारः too heavy, नास्ति not, कृतान्तश्च capable of doing anything, सुदुर्जयः difficult to conquer.

"Rama along with Lakshmana has fallen in the battlefield. Time spirit is too heavy and capable of doing anything, so difficult to conquer."
नशोचामितथारामंलक्ष्मणंचमहारथम् ।

वात्मानंजननींचापियथाश्वश्रूंतपस्विनीम् ।।6.48.20।।


तपस्विनीम् one who observes austerities, श्वश्रूम् motherinlaw, यथा like that, तथा so also, रामम् Rama, नशोचामि not grieve, महारथम् great warrior, लक्ष्मणंच even Lakshmana, आत्मानम् my own self, नजननींचापि even my mother, न not.

"When I think of Rama or even great warrior Lakshmana, or my mother or myself I am not so sad as when I think of my motherinlaw who is an observer of austerity."
सातुचिन्तयतेनित्यंसमाप्तव्रतमागतम् ।

कदाद्रक्ष्यामिसीतांचलक्ष्मणंचसराघवम् ।।6.48.21।।


सातु she also, समाप्तव्रतम् vow completed, आगतम् will come, सराघवम् Raghava, लक्ष्मणंच and Lakshmana, सीताम् च Sita also, कदा then, द्रक्ष्यामि will see, नित्यम् always, चिन्तयते worried

"She will also be worried and wait for Rama who has completed his vow (for fourteen years) and Lakshmana and Sita to come."
परिदेवयमानांतांराक्षसीत्रिजटाब्रवीत् ।

माविषादंकृथादेवी भर्ताऽयंतवजीवति ।।6.48.22।।


परिदेवयमानाम् god like woman, ताम् her, राक्षसी rakshasi, त्रिजटा Trijata, अब्रवीत् said, देवी Devi, विषादम् sorrow, माकृथाः not despair, तव your, भर्ता husband, अयम् this, जीवति is alive.

Looking at Sita, worried, Trijata said 'Devi, do not despair. Your husband is alive'.
कारणानिचवक्ष्यामिमहान्तिसदृशानिच ।

यथेमौजीवतोदेवीभ्रातरौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।।6.48.23।।


देवी Devi, भ्रातरौ brothers, इमौ like this, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, यथा in this way, जीवतः alive, महान्ति great, सदृशानि living, कारणानिच and the reasons, वक्ष्यामि I see.

"O Devi! Rama and Lakshmana are alive. I see great reasons for this."
नहिकोपपरीतानिहर्षपर्युत्सुकानिच ।

भवन्तियुधियोधानांमुखानिनिहतेपतौ ।।6.48.24।।


पतौ husband, युधि in war, निहते ceased of life, योधानाम् in the war, मुखानि face, कोपपरीतानि angry look, हर्षपर्युत्सुकानिच happy looks, नभवन्तिहि not be there.

"If a husband ceases life in war, their face will not have an angry look or happy appearance."
इदंविमानंवैदेही पुष्पकंनामनामतः ।

दिव्यंत्वांदारयन्नैवंयद्येतौगतजीवितौ ।।6.48.25।।


वैदेही Vaidehi, नामतः indeed, पुष्पकंनाम Pushpaka by name, दिव्यम् auspicious, इदंविमानम् this aerial car, एतौ if they, गतजीवितौयदि are ceased of life, त्वाम् your, नधारयेत् would not have borne.

"Vaidehi! Indeed, this aerial car called Pushpaka which is an auspicious one would not have brought you if they are ceased of life."
हतवीरप्रधानाहिगतोत्साहानिरुद्यमा ।

सेनाभ्रमतिसङ् ख्येषुहतकर्णेवनौर्जले ।।6.48.26।।


सङ् ख्येषु the troop, हतवीरप्रधाना chief leader dead, सेना army, गतोत्साहा lost interest, निरुद्यमा without making effort, जले in water, हतकर्णा lost helmsman, नौःइव like ship, भ्रमति moves about.

"The army chief killed, the interest of the troop lost, Pushpaka will move about without making an effort like the ship which lost the helmsman."
इयंपुनरसम्भ्रान्तानिरुद्विग्नातरस्विनी ।

सेनारक्षतिकाकुत्स्थौमयाप्रीत्यानिवेदितौ ।।6.48.27।।


तरस्विनी O lady given to austerities, इयम् this, सेवापुनः guarding, असम्भ्रान्ता confused, निरुद्विग्ना proclaimed, मया by me, प्रीत्या lovingly, निवेदितौ telling, काकुत्स्थौ Kakuthsa, रक्षति are safe.

"O Lady, given to austerities! These monkeys are guarding Kakuthsa as proclaimed by me lovingly. Do not be confused. They are safe."
सात्वंभवसुविस्रब्धाअनुमानैस्सुखोदयैः ।

अहतौपश्यकाकुत्स्थौस्नेहादेतद्ब्र्रवीमिते ।।6.48.28।।


सा he, त्वम् you, सुखोदयैः the army, अनुमानैः not doubtful, सविस्रब्धाः not perturbed, भव you, अहतौ not killed, काकुत्स्थौ Kakutsthas, पश्य seeing, स्नेहात् lovingly, एतद् all this, ते to you, ब्रवीमि telling.

"This army is not doubting, not perturbed also, that they are killed. They are guarding the Kakutsthas lovingly. I am telling you."
अनृतंनोक्तपूर्वंमेनचवक्ष्येकदाचन ।

चारित्रसुखशीलत्वात् प्रविष्टाअसिमनःमम ।।6.48.29।।


नउक्तपूर्वम् not uttered earlier, नचवक्ष्ये nor tell a lie, कदाचन indeed, चारित्रसुखशीलत्वात् woman of good disposition, मम I am, मनः heartily, प्रविष्टाअसि found entry into my mind.

"I have not uttered untruth earlier nor shall I do now. Indeed, you have found entry into my mind being a woman of good disposition."
नेमौशक्यारणेजेतुंसेन्द्रैरपिसुरासुरैः ।

तादृशंदर्शनंदृष्टवामयाचावेदितंतव ।।6.48.30।।


इमौ these, सेन्द्रैः Indra, सुरासुरैरपि even Suras or Asuras also, रणे in war, जेतुम् to win, नशक्यौ not capable, तादृशम् indications of life, दर्शनम् observation, दृष्टवा seeing, मया by me, तव your, आवेदितुम् making you to know.

"These two are not capable of being won in war even by gods or demons. On observation of the indications by me I am making you realize."
इदंचसुमहचचित्रंशरैःपश्यस्वमैथिलि ।

निस्संज्ञावप्युभावेतौनैवलक्ष्मीर्विमुञ्चति ।।6.48.31।।


मैथिलि Mythili, शरैः arrows, निस्संज्ञावपि unconscious also, उभौ both, अपि indeed, एतौ these, लक्ष्मीः prosperous, नैवमुञ्चति body splendour not diminished, इदम् this, सुमहत् great, चित्रम् wonder, पश्यस्व you may see

"O Mythili! Even though both of them have fallen and unconscious under arrows their body splendour has not diminished. You may see."
प्रायेणगतसत्त्वानांपुरुषाणांगतायुषाम् ।

दृश्यमानेषुवक्त्रेषुपरंभवतिवैकृतम् ।।6.48.32।।


प्रायेण normally, गतायुषाम् ceased of life, गतसत्त्वानाम् whose breathing has stopped, पुरुषाणाम् among men, दृश्यमानेषु when we see, वक्त्रेषु in features, परम् very, वैकृतम् unappealing, भवति will be

"Normally when we see men who have ceased life and stopped breathing their features are unappealing."
त्यजशोकंचमोहंचदुःखंचजनकात्मजे ।

रामलक्ष्मणयोरर्थेनाद्यशक्यमजीवितुम् ।।6.48.33।।


जनकात्मजे Janaki, रामलक्ष्मणयोः Rama and Lakshmana अर्थे both, शोकम् sorrow, दुःखंच and grief, मोहंच and delusion, त्यज giving up, अद्य get up, अजीवितुम् are alive, नशक्यम् not possible.

"O Janaka's daughter! You give up grief and delusion about Rama and Lakshmana. They are alive, no doubt."
शुत्वातुवचनंतस्याःसीतासुरसुतोपमा ।

कृताञ्जलिरुवाचेमामेवमस्त्वितिमैथिलि ।।6.48.34।।


सुरसुतोपमा equal to deities, मैथिली Mythili, सीता Sita, तस्याः her, वचनम् words of consolation, श्रुत्वा hearing, कृताज्ञलिः greeted with both palms together, एवम् in that way, अस्, इति thus, उवाच spoke.

Sita who was like deity, on hearing the words of consolation, spoken by Trijata, greeted Trijata with palms together.
विमानंपुष्पकंतत्तुसन्निवर्त्यमनोजवम् ।

दीनात्रिजटयासीतालङ्कामेवप्रवेशिता ।।6.48.35।।


दीना desperate, सीता Sita, त्रिजटया Trijata, मनोजवम् speed of mind, तत् there, पुष्पकंविमानम् Pushpaka chariot, सन्निवर्त्य turning, लङ्कामेव into Lanka, प्रवेशिता entered.

Then Trijata took Sita in the Pushpaka chariot endowed with the speed of mind and entered Lanka.
ततस्त्रिजटयासार्थंपुष्पकादवरुह्यसा ।

अशोकवनिकामेवराक्षसीभिःप्रवेशिता ।।6.48.36।।


ततः thereafter, सा she, त्रिजटयासार्थम् along with Trijata, पुष्पकात् in Pushpaka, अनरुह्य making to get down, राक्षसीभिः rakshasi also, अशोकवनिकामेव to Ashoka grove, प्रवेशिता entered.

Thereafter Sita along with Trijata went to Pushpaka. Making Sita to get down, rakshasi also entered Ashoka grove.
प्रविश्यसीताबहुवृक्षषण्डांतांराक्षसेन्द्रस्यविहारभूमिम् ।

सम्प्रेक्ष्यसञ्चिन्त्यचराजपुत्रौपरंविषादंसमुपाजगाम ।।6.48.37।।


सीता Sita, बहुवृक्षषण्डाम् with many trees, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य Rakshasa Lord's, विहारभूमिम् pleasure garden, ताम् they, प्रविश्य on entering, राजपुत्रौ king's sons, सम्प्रेक्ष्य having keenly observed, सञ्चिन्त्यच with intense agony, परम् very, विषादम् sad, उपाजगाम gave way.

Having entered the Rakshasa's pleasure garden which had many trees, Sita gave way to intense sorrow having keenly observed the king's sons.
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेअष्टचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the forty eighth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
