Sloka & Translation

[Lanka is set on fire by the Vanaras on Jambavan's instructions. Terrible fight takes place between Rakshasas and Vanaras.]

ततोऽब्रवीन्महातेजास्सुग्रीवोवानराधिपः ।

अर्थ्यंविज्ञापयंश्चापिहनूमन्तमिदंवचः ।।6.75.1।।


ततः then, वानराधिपः Vanara king, महातेजाः intelligent, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, विज्ञापयन् च अपि the task ahead, हनूमन्तम् Hanumantha, अर्थ्यम् make known, इदम् these, वचः words, अब्रवीत् said.

Sugriva, the king of Vanaras called Hanuman to make him know the task ahead and said these words.
यतोहतःकुम्भकर्णःकुमाराश्चनिषूदिताः ।

नेदानीमुपनिर्हारंरावणोदातुमर्हति ।।6.75.2।।


यतः since, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, हतः killed, कुमाराश्च son, निषूदिताः destroyed, रावणः Ravana, इदानीम् no longer, उपनिर्हारम् put up defence, दातुम् again, न अर्हति I think.

" As Kumbhakarna is killed and his sons are destroyed, Ravana may not putup defence again. I think."
येयेमहाबलास्सन्तिलघवश्चप्लवङ्गमाः ।

लङ्कामभ्युतन्त्याशुगृह्योल्काःप्लवगर्षभाः ।।6.75.3।।

हरयोहरिसङ्काशाःप्रदग्धुंरावणालयम् ।


महाबलाः endowed with prowess, लघवश्च and quick, प्लवगर्षभाः bulls among Vanaras, येये whoever, प्लवङ्गमाः Vanaras, सन्ति able, हरिसङ्काशाः foremost, हरयः monkeys, उल्काः torch, गृह्य taking, रावणालयम् Ravana's abode, प्रदग्धुम् invade, अशु go, लङ्काम् Lanka, अभिपतन्तु let them.

"Of the bulls among vanaras, endowed with prowess, whoever is quick, able and foremost, let them go to Lanka, the abode of Ravana."
तोस्तंगतआदित्येरौद्रेतस्मिन्निशामुखे ।।6.75.4।।

लङ्कामभिमुखास्सोल्काजग्मुस्तेप्लवगर्षभाः ।


ततः thereafter, आदित्ये Sun, अस्तंगते having set, रौद्रे frightening, तस्मिन् their, निशामुखे faces turned, ते they, प्लवगर्षभाः Vanara bulls, सोल्काः holding torches, लङ्काम् अभिमुखाः facing Lanka, जग्मुः went.

Thereafter the bulls among Vanaras turned their faces towards Lanka and went holding torches in hand, after the Sun set as the frightening night started.
उल्काहस्सैर्हरिगणैस्सर्वतस्समभिद्रुताः ।।6.75.5।।

आरक्षस्थाविरूपाक्षास्सहसाविप्रदद्रुवुः ।


उल्काहस्सैः torches in hand, हरिगणैः Vanara troops, सर्वतः all over, समभिद्रुताः chased, आरक्षस्थाः at the gates, विरूपाक्षाः Rakshasas, सहसा instantly, विप्रदुद्रुवुः ran.

Vanara troops went all over with torches and chased by them, the Rakshasas at the gates ran instantly.
गोपुराट्टप्रतोलीषुचर्यासुविविधासु च ।।6.75.6।।

प्रासादेषु च सम्हृष्टास्ससृजुस्तेहुताशनम् ।


सम्हृष्टाः rejoiced, ते they, गोपुराट्टप्रतोलीषु towering gates and attics, विविधासु different, चर्यासु streets, प्रासादेषु च mansions, हुताशनम् set fire, ससृजुः to send away.

Rejoiced Vanaras set fire to the towering gates, attics, different streets as well as mansions to send away Rakshasas.
तेषांगृहसहस्राणिददाहहुतभुक्तदा ।।6.75.7।।

प्रासादाःपर्वताकाराःपतन्तिधरणीतले ।


तदा then, हुतभुक् fire, तेषाम् their, गृहसहस्राणि thousands of houses, ददाह burnt, पर्वताकाराः of mountain like form, प्रासादाः mansions, धरणीतले on the ground, पतन्ति collapsed.

Then thousands of their houses were burnt by fire (consumer of offerings), and mountain like mansions collapsed to the ground.
अगुरुर्दह्यतेतत्रवरं च हरिचन्दनम् ।।6.75.8।।

मौक्तिकामणयस्स्निग्धावज्रंचापिप्रवालकम् ।


तत्र there, अगुरुः incense, दह्यते burnt, परम् best, हरिचन्दनम् sandalwood, स्निग्धाः glossy, मौक्तिकाः pearls, मणयः gems, वज्र् चापि and diamonds also, प्रवालकम् corals.

There, in Lanka, incense and the best of sandalwood was burnt. Nay even glossy pearls, gems and diamonds were also burnt.
क्षौमं च दह्यतेतत्रकौशेयंचापिशोभनं ।।6.75.9।।

आविकंविविधंचौर्णंकाञ्चनंभाण्डमायुधम् ।


तत्र there, क्षौमम् white silk, दह्यते was burnt, शोभनम् beautiful, कौशेयं च silks, आविकम् blankets, विविधम् several, और्णं च woollen, काञ्चनम् gold, भाण्डम् chests, आयुधम् weapons.

Their white linen and beautiful silks were burnt. Nay, even several blankets of wool, chests and weapons were also burnt.
नानाविकृतसंस्थानंवाजिभाण्डपरिच्छदौ ।।6.75.10।।

गजग्रैवेयकक्ष्याश्चरथभाण्डाश्चसम्स्कृताः ।


नानाविकृतसंस्थानम् different kinds of peculiar ornaments, वाजिभाण्डपरिच्छदम् ornaments used for decoration of horses, गजग्रैवेयकक्ष्याश्च ornaments worn round the neck and girths of elephants, सम्स्कृताः polished, रथभाण्डाश्च chariot decorations.

Different kinds of peculiar kinds of ornaments used to decorate horses, ornaments worn round the neck and girths of elephants, and polished chariot decorations.
नुत्राणि च योधानांहस्त्यश्वानां व चर्म च ।।6.75.11।।

खडगाधनूंषिज्वाबाणास्तोमराङ्कुशशक्तयः ।


योधानाम् of the warriors, हस्त्यश्वानां च shields of horses, तनुत्राणि armour, चर्मच leather, खडगाः swords, धनूंषि bow strings, ज्याः excellent, बाणाः arrows, तोमराङ्कुशशक्तयः goads, lances and javelins.

Leather armour of the warriors, shields of horses, excellent bow strings, swords, arrows, goads, lances, and javelins.
रोमजंवालजंचर्मव्याघ्रजंचण्डजंबहु ।।6.75.12।।

मुक्तामणिविचित्रांश्चप्रासादांश्चसमन्ततः ।

विविधानस्त्रसंयोगानग्निर्दहतितत्रवै ।।6.75.13।।


अग्निः fire, समन्ततः all over, रोमजम् rugs made of hair of animals, वालजम् whisks made of fur of animals, व्याघ्रजम् tiger, चर्म skins, बहु many, चण्डजम् musk, मुक्तामणिविचित्रान् wonderful pearls and gems, प्रासादान् च dwellings, विविधान् many kinds, संयोगान् clusters of war weapons, तत्र there, दहतिवै were burnt.

With fire all over, rugs made of hair of animals, whisks made of fur of animals, tiger skins, musk, wonderful pearls, and gems in laid dwellings of many kinds, and clusters of war weapons were burnt.
नानाविधान्गृहच्छन्दान्धदाहहुतभुक्तदा ।

आवासान्राक्षसानां च सर्वेषांगृहगर्थिनाम् ।।6.75.14।।

हेमचित्रतनुत्राणस्रग्दामाम्भरधारिणाम् ।

शीधुपानचलाक्षाणांमद्विह्वलगामिनाम् ।।6.75.15।।

कान्तालम्बितवस्त्राणांशत्रुसञ्जातमन्युनाम् ।

गदाशूलासिहस्तानांखादतांपिबतामपि ।।6.75.16।।

शयनेषुमहार्हेषुप्रसुप्तानांप्रियैस्सह ।

त्रस्तानांगच्छतांतूर्णंपुत्रानादायसर्वतः ।।6.75.17।।

तेषांशतसहस्राणितदालङ्कानिवासिनाम् ।

अदहत्पावकस्तत्रजज्वाल च पुनःपुनः ।।6.75.18।।


तदा then, हुतभुक् consumed by fire, चित्रान् wonderful, नानाविधान् of many kinds, गृहान् homes, गृहगर्थिनाम् well known Rakshasas, सर्वेषाम् all of them, राक्षसानाम् Rakshasas, आवासान् homes, ददाह burnt, तत्र there, पावकः by fire, हेमचित्रतनुत्राणाम् armour made of gold, स्रग्धामांम्बरधारिणाम् decked with garland s and best of attire, शीधुपानचलाक्षाणाम् their eyes wild with inebriation, मद्विह्वलगामिनाम् walked slowly being intoxicated, कान्तालम्बितवस्त्राणां holding the robes of loved ones, शत्रुसञ्जातमन्यूनाम् seized with anger against enemies, गदाशूलसिहस्तानाम् holding maces and tridents in hand, खादताम् eating, पिबतामपि drinking, प्रियैस्सह with loved ones, महार्हेषु fast asleep, शयनेषु on the best beds, प्रसुप्तानाम् sleeping, त्रस्तानाम् out of fear, पुत्रान् sons, आदाय taking, सर्वतः all sides, तूर्णम् quickly, गच्छताम् going, तेषाम् all of them, निवासिनाम् dwelling there, शतसहस्राणि hundreds and thousands, अदहत् burnt, पुनःपुनः again and again, जज्वाल च burning.

The fire consumed many kinds of wonderful homes of Rakshasas, with loved ones on the best beds, their armour made of gold Rakshasas decked with garland s and best of attire their eyes inebriated with intoxication, shaking while walking slowly, holding their loved ones, seized with anger against enemies, holding mace and tridents in hand, eating, drinking and sleeping on the best beds, fast asleep some out of fear taking their sons going quickly and all of them dwelling there in hundreds and thousands were burning again and again.
सारवन्तिमहार्हाणिगम्भीरगुणवन्ति च ।

हेमचन्द्रार्धचन्द्राणिचन्द्रशालोनतानि च ।।6.75.19।।

तत्रचित्रगवाक्षाणिसाधिष्ठानानिसर्वशः ।

मणिविद्रुमचित्राणिस्पृशन्तीवदिवाकरम् ।।6.75.20।।

क्रौञ्चबर्हिबवीणानांभूषणानां च निस्स्वनैः ।

नादितान्यचलाभानिवेश्मान्यग्निर्ददाह स ।।6.75.21।।


तत्र there, अग्निः fire, सारवन्ति strong and impenetrable, महार्हाणि many enclosures, गम्बीरगुणवन्ति च magnificent, हेमचन्ध्रार्धचन्द्राणि constructed in gold in the shape of the crescent moon, चन्द्रशालोत्तमानि च in the shape of moon, चित्रगवाक्षाणि windows endowed with wonderful pictures, सर्वशः all over, साधिष्ठानानि were high with rooms on top, मणिविद्रुमचित्राणि decorated with gems, दिवाकरम् Sun, स्पृशन्तीव as if touching the Sun, क्रौञ्चबर्हिणवीणानाम् rendered noisy with notes of herons and peacocks and veena, भूषणानां च of ornaments, निस्वनैः sounds, नादितानि vibrating sounds, अचलाभानि looked like mountain in shape, वेश्मानि dwellings, ददाह ह burnt.

The fire consumed the houses which were strong and impenetrable, with many enclosures, magnificent ones, constructed in gold in the shape of a half moon and full moon, windows endowed with wonderful pictures. All over the rooms were high on top, decorated with gems, and as if touching the Sun. It was rendered noisy with notes of herons and peacocks, playing of Veena, and jingling of ornaments like the vibration of sounds. The dwellings which looked like mountains were consumed by fire.
ज्वलनेनपरीतानितोरणानिचकाशिरे ।

विद्युद्भिरिवनद्धानिमेघजालानिघर्मगे ।।6.75.22।।


ज्वलनेन by the touch of fire, परीतानि covered, तोरणानि archways, घर्मगे in summer, विद्युद्भिः lightning, नद्धानि girt round, मेघजालानीव like clusters of clouds, चकाशिरे shone.

The archways covered with a touch of fire shone like lightning in summer, girt round like clusters of clouds.
ज्वलनेनपरीतानिनिपेतुर्भवनान्वथ ।

वज्रिवज्रहतानीवशिखराणिमहागिरेः ।।6.75.23।।


ज्वलनेन burnt, परीतानि by fire, निपेतुः fell down, भवनानि mansions, महागिरेः large mountain, वज्रिवज्रहतानीव burnt by thunderbolt, शिखराणि peaks, यथा that way, महागिरेः like huge mountains.

The mansions burnt by fire fell down like a huge mountain struck by a thunderbolt.
विमानेषुप्रसुस्ताश्चदह्यमानावराङ्गनाः ।

त्यक्ताभरणसर्वाङ्गाहाहेत्युच्चैर्विचुक्रुशुः ।।6.75.24।।


विमानेषु in the mansion tops, प्रसुप्ताः sleeping, दह्वमानाः burnt, वराङ्गनाः lovely women, त्यक्ताभरणसर्वाङ्गाः removing the ornaments, हाहाइति alas! Oh Oh!! like this, उच्चैः screamed, विचुक्रुशुः loudly in despair.

The lovely women sleeping in burnt mansion tops screamed loudly in desperation saying 'Alas! Oh Oh!' and removing their ornaments.
तत्रचाग्निपरीतानिनिपेतुर्भवनान्यपि ।

वज्रिवज्रहतानीवशिखराणिमहागिरेः ।।6.75.25।।


तत्र there, अग्निपरीतानि peaks of mountains burnt, भवनान्यपि mansions, वज्रिवज्रहतानि like struck by thunderbolt, महागिरेः huge mountain, शिखराणीव like peaks, निपेतुः fell.

Like peaks of mountains struck by thunderbolt the mansions also fell, caught in fire.
तानिनिर्दह्यमानानिदूरतःप्रचकाशिरे ।

हिमवच्छिखराणीवदीप्तौषदिवनानिच ।।6.75.26।।


निर्दह्यमानानि as they were burning, तानि those, दिवशः on all sides, दीप्तौषनानि while glowing, हिमवच्छिखराणीव Himalaya peaks, दूरतः in distance, प्रचकाशिरे as. if shining,

As the mansions were burning, they shone like the peaks of Himalayas glowing at a distance.
हर्म्याग्रैर्दह्यमानैश्चज्वालाप्रज्वलितैरपि ।

रात्रौसादृश्यतेलङ्कापुष्पितैरिवकिंशुकैः ।।6.75.27।।


दह्यमानैः while burning, ज्वालाप्रज्वलितैः flames were blazing, हर्म्याग्रैः tops of dwellings, सा they, लङ्का Lanka, रात्रौ night, पुष्पितैः blossoms, किंशुकैःइव Kimsuka, दृश्यते appeared.

While the tops of dwellings were burning, flames were blazing, and Lanka seemed adorned with Kimsuka blossoms.
हस्त्यध्यक्षैर्गजैर्मुक्तेर्मुक्सैश्चैवतुरङ्गमैः ।

बभूवलङ्कालोकान्तेभ्रान्तग्राहइवार्णवः ।।6.75.28।।


लङ्का Lanka, हस्त्यध्यक्षैः guards of horses, मुक्सैः let loose, गजैः elephants, मुक्सैः let loose, तुरङ्गमैः horses, लोकान्ते at the end of world cycle, भ्रान्तग्राहः agitated, अर्णवःइव ocean like, बभूव seemed.

In Lanka with the elephants set free, horses set free by the guards, it was like an agitated ocean at the end of the world cycle.
अश्वंमुक्तंगजोदृष्टवाक्वचिद्भीतोऽपसर्पति ।

भीतोभीतंगजंदृष्टवाक्वचिदश्वोनिवर्तते ।।6.75.29।।


क्वचित् some, मुक्तम् released, अश्वम् horses, दृष्टवा seeing, गजः elephants, भीतः feared, अपसर्पति went in different direction, क्वचित् some, भीतम् in fear, गजम् elephants, दृष्टवा seeing, अश्वः horses, भीतः fearing, निवर्तते ran away.

Some horses that were released, went in different directions afraid of elephants. Some elephants seeing horses ran away in fear.
लङ्कायांदह्यमानायांशुशुभे स महार्णवः ।

छायासंसक्तसलिलोलोहितोदइवार्णवः ।।6.75.30।।


लङ्कायाम् in Lanka, दह्यमानायाम् while burning, छायासंसक्तसलिलः the image of reflected in water, महार्णवः of the ocean, लोहितोदः red coloured, महार्णवःइव like ocean, शुशुभे appeared.

While Lanka was burning its image reflected in the ocean made the ocean look like an ocean of red waters.
साबभूवमुहूर्तेनहरिभिर्दीपितापुरी ।

लोकस्यास्यक्ष्येघोरेप्रदीप्तेववसुन्दरा ।।6.75.31।।


मुहूर्तेन in a short while, हरिभिः monkeys also, दीपिता set fire, सापुरी that city, अस्य its, लोकस्य in the world, घोरे dreadful, क्ष्ये destruction, प्रदीप्ता flaming, वसुन्धराइव like land, बभूव was.

Set fire by the monkeys, in a short while, the city was like a land flaming out of dreadful destruction in the world.
नारीजनस्यधूमेनव्याप्तस्योच्चैर्विनेदुषः ।

स्वनोज्वलनतप्तस्यशुश्रुवेशतयोजनम् ।।6.75.32।।


धूमेन smoke, व्याप्तस्य spread, ज्वलनतप्तस्य scorched by fire, उच्चैः at the top of, विनेदुषः clamour, नारीजनस्य of the women folk, स्वनः sound, शतयोजनम् a hundred yojanas, शुश्रुवे heard.

By the smoke that spread, scorched by the fire, the clamour of the women folk at the top of their voice was heard at a hundred yojanas.
प्रदग्धकायानपरान् राक्षसान्निर्गतान् बहिः ।

सहसाभ्युत्पतन्तिस्महरयोऽथयुयुत्सवः ।।6.75.33।।


अथ and then, प्रदग्धकायान् burnt bodies, बहिः outside, निर्गतान् unable to bear, अपरान् continued, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, हरयः monkeys, युयुत्सवः eager to fight, सहसा suddenly, उत्पतन्तिस्म assailed.

And thereafter the monkeys who were eager to fight assailed the Rakshasas who came out suddenly unable to bear the burning of the bodies.
उद्घुष्टंवानराणां च राक्षसानां च निस्स्वनः ।

दिशोदशसमुद्रं च पृथिवींचान्वनादयत् ।।6.75.34।।


वानराणाम् monkeys, उद्घुष्टं च clamour, राक्षसानाम् of the Rakshasas, निस्स्वसः च sighing, दश ten, दिशः directions, समुद्रं च ocean, पृथिवीं च earth, व्यनादयत् resound.

The clamour of the monkeys and the sighing of the Rakshasas resounded in all the ten directions including the ocean as well as the earth.
विशल्यौतुमहात्मानौतावुभौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।

असम्भ्रान्तौजगृहतुस्तदोभौधनुषीवरे ।।6.75.35।।


महात्मानौ great souls, तौ the two, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, उभौ both, विशल्यौ excellent, असम्भ्रान्तौ relieved of the pain, वरे well known, ता those, उभौ two, धनुषी bows, जगृहतुः seized hold.

The two great souls, Rama, and Lakshmana, both relieved of pain seized hold of excellent and wellknown bows.
ततोविस्फारयानस्यरामस्यधनुरुत्तमम् ।

बभूवतुमुलश्शब्दोराक्षसानांभयावहः ।।6.75.36।।


ततः then, रामः च Rama, उत्तमम् best, धनुः bow, विस्फारयामानस्य drew, राक्षसानाम् Rakshasas, भयावहः out of fear, तुमुलः tumultuous, शब्दः sound, भभूव created.

Then Rama drew the best of bow, that created fear among the Rakshasas by its tumultuous sound.
अशोभततदारामोधनुर्विष्फारयन् महत् ।

भगवानिवसङ्कृद्धोभवोवेदमयंधनुः ।।6.75.37।।


तदा then, महत् great, धनुः bow, विष्फारयन् bending, रामः Rama, वेदमयम् signs of Vedas, धनुः bow, सङ्कृद्धः in great fury, भगवान् divine, भवःइव Lord Siva, अशोभत shone.

Then, great Rama stretching his bow in great fury shone as though the divine Lord Siva was stretching his bow with imprints of Vedas.
उद्घुष्टंवानराणां च राक्षसानां च निस्स्वनम् ।

ज्याशब्दस्तावुभौशब्दावतिरामस्यशुश्रुवे ।।6.75.38।।


रामस्य Rama's, ज्याशब्दः that sound, वानराणाम् for the Vanaras, उद्घुष्टम् above, राक्षसानाम् Rakshasas, निस्स्वनं च sounds, तौ those, उभौ two, अतिशुश्रुवे very high.

That sound of the twang of Rama's bow could be heard very high over and above the sounds of the Vanaras and Rakshasas.
वानरोद्घुष्टघोषश्चराक्षसानां च निस्स्वनः ।

ज्याशब्दश्चापिरामस्यत्रयंव्याप्यदिशोदश ।।6.75.39।।


वानरोद्घुष्टघोषः च shouts of the vanaras, राक्षसानाम् Rakshasas, निस्स्वनः च wailing also, रामस्य Rama's, ज्याशब्दश्चापि by that sound, त्रयम् three, दश ten, दिशः directions, व्याप्य spread.

The sound of Rama's bow twang, the clamour of the Vanaras as well as the wailing of Rakshasas, all the three could be heard in all ten directions.
तस्यकार्मुकमुक्सैश्चशरैस्तत्पुरगोपुरम् ।

कैलासशृङ्गप्रतिमंविशीर्णमपतद्भुवि ।।6.75.40।।


कैलासशृङ्गप्रतिमम् the entrance gate of the city that was like Kailasa, तत्पुरगोपुरम् which resembled, तस्य its, कार्मुकमुक्सैश्च shaft released from bow, शरैः arrows, विशीर्णम् crumbled, भुवि on the ground, अपतत् fallen.

The entrance gate of Lanka, which was like Kailasa, crumbled and fell by the shaft released from the bow of Rama.
ततोरामशरान् दृष्टवाविमानेषुगृहेषु च ।

सन्नाहोराक्षसेन्द्राणांतुमुलस्समपद्यत ।।6.75.41।।


ततः then, विमानेषु on the high rise mansions, गृहेषु च and houses, रामशरान् Rama's arrows, दृष्टवा seeing, राक्षसेन्द्राणाम् Rakshasa leaders, सन्नाहः preparing, तुमुलः feared, समपद्यत started.

Seeing Rama's arrows on the highrise mansions and houses, the Rakshasa leaders started preparing for comb at out of fear.
तेषांसन्नह्यमानानांसिंहनादं च कुर्वताम् ।

शर्वरीराक्षसेन्द्राणांरौद्रीवसमपद्यत ।।6.75.42।।


सन्नह्यमानानाम् as they were preparing, सिंहनादम् leonine, कुर्वताम् doing, तेषाम् by them, राक्षसेन्द्राणाम् Rakshasa leaders, शर्वरी night, रौद्रीव Rudra's, समपद्यत came upon.

As the Rakshasa leaders were preparing (for attack) and emitting leonine roar, night came upon like the night of Rudra (night of final dissolution).
आदिष्टावानरेन्द्रास्तेसुग्रीवेणमहात्मना ।

आसन्नद्वारमासाद्ययुध्यध्वंप्लवगर्षभाः ।।6.75.43।।

यश्चवोवितथंकुर्वात्तत्रतत्रव्यवस्थितः ।

स हन्तव्योहिसंफ्लुत्यराजशासनदूषकः ।।6.75.44।।


ते they, वानरेन्द्राः Vanara king, महात्मना great soul, सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, आदिष्टाः commanded, प्लवगर्षभाः bulls among monkeys, आसन्नम् reaching, द्वारम् gate, आसाद्य reached, युध्यध्वम् encounter, वः or, यः he who, तत्रतत्र here and there, व्यवस्थितःअपि staying there, वितथम् false, कुर्वात् do, राजशासनदूषकः one who does not obey this king's order, सः he, अहिसंफ्लुत्य guilty of flouting, हन्तव्यः be destroyed, तेषु for them.

Sugriva the great king of Vanaras commanded all the bulls among Vanaras, to encounter after reaching the gate of Lanka. "He who is staying wherever they are does not obey the king's command will be killed for being guilty of flouting the command", ordered Sugriva to the Vanaras.
तेषुवानरमुखेषुदीप्तोल्कोज्ज्वलपाणिषु ।

स्थितेषुद्वारमासाद्यरावणंमन्युराविशत् ।।6.75.45।।


दीप्तोल्कोज्ज्वलपाणिषु holding burning torches in hand, तेषु they, वानरमुख्येषु Vanara chiefs, द्वारम् gate, आसाद्य reaching, स्थितेषु standing, रावणम् Ravana, मन्युराविशत् overtaken by anger.

Holding burning torches in hand the Vanara chiefs reached and standing at the gate, saw that Ravana was overtaken by anger.
तस्यजृम्भितविक्षेपाद्व्यामिश्रावैदिशोदश ।

रूपवानिवरुद्रस्यमन्युर्गात्रेष्वदृश्यत ।।6.75.46।।


तस्य his, जृम्भितविक्षेपात् violent disturbance, दश ten, दिशः directions, व्यामिश्राःवै yawning, गात्रेषु limbs, रुद्रस्य Rudra's, रूपवान् form, मन्युः wrath, अदृश्यतइव perceptible like.

The ten directions were disturbed violently by his yawning and his wrath was perceptible like Rudra' s form in his limbs by his wrath.
स निकुम्भं च कुम्भं च कुम्भकर्णात्मजावुभौ ।

प्रेषयामाससङ्कृद्धोराक्षससैर्बहुभिस्सह ।।6.75.47।।


सङ्कृद्धः becoming very angry, सः he, कुम्भं च Kumbha and, निकुम्भं च Nikumbha, कुम्भकर्णात्मजौ Kumbhakarna's sons, उभौ both, बहुभिः many, राक्षसैस्सह Rakshasas, प्रेषयामास sent for.

Seized with anger, he sent for Kumbha and Nikumbha, both the sons of Kumbhakarna and many Rakshasas.
यूपाक्षश्शोणिताक्षश्चप्रजङ्घःकम्पनस्तथा ।

निर्ययुःकौम्भकर्णिभ्यांसहरावणशासनात् ।।6.75.48।।


यूपाक्षः Yupaksha, शोणिताक्षश्च Sonithasksha, प्रजङ्घः Prajangha, तथा similarly, कम्पनः Kampana, रावणशासनात् by Ravana's command, कौम्भकर्णिभ्यांसह Kumbhakarna's sons, निर्ययुः set out.

Yupaksha, Sonithaksha, Prajangha, Kampana set out with both the sons of Kumbhakarna.
शशासचैवतान् सर्वान्राक्षसान् सुमहाबलान् ।

राक्षसागच्छताद्यैवसिंहनादं च नादयन् ।।6.75.49।।


सः he, महाबलान् extraordinary strength, तान् them, सर्वान् all, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, शशास च ordered, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, सिंहनादम् lion roar, नादयन् roaring, अद्यैव now, गच्छत go.

Roaring like a lion, he ordered all the Rakshasas of extraordinary strength to proceed instantly.
ततस्तुचोदितास्तेनराक्षसाज्वलितायुधाः ।

लङ्कायानिर्ययुर्वीराःप्रणदन्तःपुनःपुनः ।।6.75.50।।


ततः then, तेन by him, चोताः , ज्वलितायुधाः glowing weapons, वीराः warriors, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, पुनःपुनः again and again, प्रणदन्तः offering salutations, लङ्कायाः from Lanka, निर्ययुः departed.

Ordered by him again and again, the Rakshasa warriors went from Lanka with glowing weapons offering salutations to him.
रक्षसांभूषणस्थाभिर्भाभिस्स्वाभिश्चसर्वशः ।

चक्रुस्तेसप्रभंव्योमहरयश्चाग्निभिस्सह ।।6.75.51।।


रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, भूषणस्थाभिः by the ornaments, सर्वशः all over, र्भाभि splendour, स्वाभिश्च their own, ते they, अग्निभिस्स्ह torches also, हरयः च monkeys, व्योम sky, सप्रभम् by that glow, चक्रुः went.

The Rakshasas by the effulgence of ornaments and by themselves illumined all over the sky like monkeys did with torches.
तत्रताराधिपस्याभाताराणां च तथैव च ।

तयोराभरणासा च बलयोर्द्यामभासयन् ।।6.75.52।।


तत्र there, ताराधिपस्या Lord of stars, आभा light, तथैव च like that, ताराणाम् stars, भा light, तयोः both, अभराणाभा च splendour of ornaments, बलयो two armies, र्द्याम sky, अभासयन् brightened.

There the radiance of the moon and stars and the splendour of their ornaments brightened the sky.
चन्द्राभाभूषणाभा च गृहाणांसागरःपुनः ।

हरिराक्षससैन्यानिभ्राजयामाससर्वतः ।।6.75.53।।


चन्द्राभा moon light, भूषणाभा च splendour of ornaments, सागरः ocean, गृहाणाम् dwellings, पुनः again, सर्वतः everywhere, हरिराक्षससैन्यानि monkey and Rakshasa army, भ्राजयामास shone brilliantly.

The moon light and the splendour of the ornaments, also the light of shining ocean and dwellings lit up the Vanara and Rakshasa armies.
तत्रचोर्ध्वंप्रदीप्तानांगृहाणांसागरःपुनः ।

भाभिस्संसक्तसलिलश्चलोर्मिश्शुशुभेऽधिकम् ।।6.75.54।।


तत्र there, चलोर्मिः waves, सागरः of the ocean, पुनः again, अर्धप्रदीप्तानाम् half burnt, गृहाणाम् houses, भाभिः shone, संसक्तसलिलः united with water, अधिकम् very, शुशुभे bright.

There the waves of the ocean shone brightly getting united with the fire of half burnt houses.
पताकाध्वजसंसक्तमुत्तमासिपरश्वधम् ।

भीमाश्वरथमातङ्गंनानापततिसमाकुलम् ।।6.75.55।।

दीप्तशूलगदाखडगप्रासतोमरकार्मुकम् ।

तद्राक्षसबलंघोरभीमंविक्रमपौरुषम् ।।6.75.56।।

ददृशेज्वलितप्रासंकिङ्किणीशतनादितम् ।

हेमजालाचितभुजंव्यावेष्टितपरश्वथम् ।।6.75.57।।

व्याघूर्णितमहाशस्त्रंबाणसंसक्तकार्मुकम् ।

गन्धमाल्यमधूत्सेकसम्मोदितमहानिलम् ।।6.75.58।।


पताकध्वजसंसक्तम् fixed with flags and poles, उत्तमासिपरश्वधम् equipped with the best of axes, भीमाश्वरथमातङ्गम् formidable chariots, horses and elephants, नानापततिसमाकुलम् different kinds of foot soldiers, दीप्तशूलगदाखडगप्रासतोमरकार्मुकम् distinguished by shining tridents, maces, swords, spears and lances, bows, घोरविक्रमपौरुषम् warriors of frightening valour and prowess, ज्वलितप्रासम् shining barbed missiles, किङ्किणीशतनादितम् hundreds of bells tied round the chariots, elephants, हेमजालाचितभुजम् endowed with arms of warriors decorated with gold, व्यावेष्टितपरश्वधम् axes to kill, व्याघूर्णितमहाशस्त्रम् weapons to pierce through, बाणसंसक्तकार्मुकम् arrows fixed to the bows, गन्धमाल्यमधूत्सेकसम्मोदितमहानिलम् fragrant with abundance of sandal, तत् that, राक्षसबलम् Rakshasa army, भीमम् terrific, ददृशे appeared.

Then the Rakshasa army appeared terrific, fixed with flags and poles, equipped with best of axes, horses yoked to formidable chariots and elephants different kinds of foot soldiers, distinguished by wielding shining tridents, maces, swords spears and lances warriors of frightening valour and prowess holding shining barbed missiles hundreds of tiny bells tied to the chariots and elephants making noise warriors endowed with arms decorated with gold, with axes and weapons to pierce arrows fixed to the bows, with an abundance of fragrance.
घोरंशूरजनाकीर्णंमहाम्बुदरनिस्स्वनम् ।

तद्दृष्टवाबलमायातंराक्षसानांसुदारुणं ।।6.75.59।।

सञ्चचालप्लवङ्गानांबलमुच्चैर्ननाद च ।


घोरम् fierce, शूरजनाकीर्णम् crowded with warriors, महाम्बुधरनिस्स्वनम् like rainy. cloud thundering, सुदारणम् dreadful, आयातम् coming, तत् that, राक्षसानांबलम्, Rakshasa army, दृष्टवा seeing, प्लवङ्गानाम् monkeys, बलम् troops, सञ्चचाल coming forward, उच्चैः elevated, ननाद च making loud noise.

Crowded with fierce warriors coming like thundering rainy clouds, the Rakshasas, and the monkey troops coming forward made loud noises with an elevated tone.
जवेनाफ्लुत्य च पुनस्तद्बलंरक्षसांमहत् ।।6.75.60।।

अभ्ययात्प्रत्यरिबलंपतङ्गाइवपावकम् ।


रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, महत् great, तत् बलंपुनः again that army, जवेन speed, आफ्लुत्य moths, पतङ्गापावकम् fly towards flame, प्रत्यरिबलम् hostile army, प्रत्ययात् rushed.

The great army of Rakshasas rushed towards the hostile army just as moths flew up towards flame.
तेषांभुजपरामर्शव्यामृष्टपरिघाशनि ।।6.75.61।।

राक्षसानांबलंश्रेष्ठंभूयस्तरमशोभत ।


तेषांराक्षसानाम् by the Rakshasas, भुजपरामर्शव्यामृष्टपरिघाशनि Clubs and Asanis brandished by rubbing with the arms, श्रेष्ठम् great, बलम् army, भूयः appeared, परम् very, अशोभत brightly.

Their Clubs and Asanis brandished by rubbing with their arms, the great army of Rakshasas appeared very bright.
तत्रोन्मत्ताइवोत्पेतुर्हरयोऽथयुयुत्सवः ।।6.75.62।।

तरुशैलैरभिघ्नन्तोमुष्टिभिश्चनिशाचरान् ।


अथ and now, तत्र there, युयुत्सवः eager, हरयः monkeys, निशाचरान् night rangers, तरुशैलैः with trees and rocks, मुष्टिभिः च and fists, अभिघ्नन्तः striking, उन्मत्ताःइव as if gone mad, उत्पेतुः rose up.

Thereafter the monkeys eager to fight with night rangers rose as if gone mad striking the night rangers with trees and rocks.
तथैवापततांतेषांकपीनामसिभिशशितैः ।।6.75.63।।

शिरांसिसहसाजह्रूराक्षसाभीमदर्शना ।


तथैव in that manner, दर्शना showed up, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, आपतताम् approaching, तेषांकपीनाम् those monkeys, शिरांसि head, सहसा instantly, शितैः sharp swords, जह्रुः cut off.

When the Rakshasas showed up in that manner, the monkeys approaching them cut off their heads instantly with sharp swords.
दशनैर्हतकर्णाश्चमुष्टिनिष्कीर्णमस्तकाः ।।6.75.64।।

शिलाप्रहारभग्नाङ्गाविचेरुस्तत्रराक्षसाः ।


तत्र there, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, दशनैः teeth, हतकर्णाः , ears bitten off मुष्टिः with fist, निष्कीर्णमस्तकाः skulls smashed, शिलाप्रहारभग्नाङ्गाः limbs broken with blows of rocks, विचेरुः moved about.

The Rakshasas with ears bitten off by the teeth of the monkeys, skulls smashed with fists, and limbs broken with blows of rocks they moved about.
तथैवाप्यपरेतेषांकपीनामभिलक्षिता ।।6.75.65।।

प्रवीरानभितोजघ्नुर्घोररूपानिशाचराः ।


तथैव in the same way, घोररूपाः of terrific appearance, अपरे more, निशाचराः night rangers, शितैः sharp, असिभिः with swords, तेषाम् those, कपिनाम् Vanaras, प्रवीरान् great heroes, अभितः in front, जघ्नुः struck.

In the aforesaid manner the Vanaras struck more night rangers of terrific appearance, great heroes in front of them with sharp swords.
घ्नन्तमन्यंजघानान्यःपातयन्तमपातयत् ।।6.75.66।।

गर्हमाणंजगर्हेऽन्योदशन्तमपरोऽदशत् ।


घ्नन्तम् struck, अन्यम् other, अन्यः other, जघान striking, पातयन्तम् throwing down, अपातयत् thrown, गर्हमाणम् reproach contemptuously, अन्यः other, जगर्हः abused, दशन्तम् one who is biting, अपरः other, अदशत् bitten.

One struck another, who was striking the other. One threw down another who was throwing the other. One abused another reproaching contemptuously, and one bit his rival biting the other.
देहीत्यन्योददात्यन्योददामीत्यपरःपुनः ।।6.75.67।।

किंक्लेशयसितिष्ठेतितत्रान्योन्यंबभाषिरे ।


तत्र there, अन्यः others, देहीति hit me, अन्यः other, ददाति I am hitting, अपरःपुनः again other, ददामीति intervened, किंक्लेशयसि who are you crying, तष्ठइति suffer like this, अन्योन्यम् one another, बभाषिरे conversed with each other.

There they conversed this way with one another 'One said hit me and another one offered to hit,', again another intervened and said, 'Why are you crying?' meaning I offer resistance, one said 'Why are you suffering like this?'.
विप्रलम्भितवस्त्रं च विमुक्तकवचायुधम् ।।6.75.68।।

समुद्यतमहाप्रासंयष्टिशूलासिसङ्कुलम् ।

प्रावर्ततमहारौद्रंयुद्धंवानररक्षसाम् ।।6.75.69।।


वानररक्षसाम् Vanaras and Rakshasas, महारौद्रम् highly enraged, युद्धम् fight, विप्रलम्भितशस्त्रम् raiment slipped, विमुक्तकवचायुधम् shields and weapons dodged, समुद्यतमहाप्रासम् huge lances were lifted up, यष्टिशूलासिसङ्कुलम् fists, tridents swords and spears, प्रावर्तत were used.

Highly enraged Vanaras and Rakshasas fought with them, raiment slipping, shields and weapons dodged, huge lances lifted to fight. They used fists, tridents, spears, and swords.
वानरान्दशसप्तेतिराक्षसाजघ्नुराहवे ।

राक्षसान्दशसप्तेतिवानराश्चाभ्यपातयन् ।।6.75.70।।


आहवे in that fight, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, दश ten, सप्त seven, इति like this, वानरान् Vanaras, जघ्नुः struck, वानराश्च Vanaras, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, दश ten, सप्त seven, इति like this, अभ्यपातयन् kept killing.

In that fight the Rakshasas killed the Vanaras at the rate of ten to seven and the Vanaras struck down Rakshasas at the rate of ten to seven.
विस्रस्तकेशवसनंविध्वस्तकवचध्वजम् ।

बलंराक्षसमालम्ब्यवानराःपर्यवारयन् ।।6.75.71।।


वानराः Vanaras, विस्रस्तकेशवसनम् hair fallen raiment slipped, विमुक्तकवचध्वजम् shields and staff posts thrown, राक्षसम् Rakshasas, बलम् army, आलम्ब्य disturbed, पर्यवारयन् surrounded.

The Vanaras surrounded the disturbed Rakshasas, whose hair was ripped off, raiment slipped off, shields and staff posts thrown.
