[Hanuman kills Nikumbha.]

निकुम्भोभ्रातरंदृष्टवासुग्रीवेणनिपातितम् ।

प्रदहन्निवकोपेनवानरेन्द्रमवैक्षत ।।6.77.1।।


निकुम्भः Nikumbha, भ्रातरम् brother, सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, निपातितम् struck down, दृष्टवा seeing, कोपेन in wrath, प्रदहन्निव as if burning, वानरेन्द्रम् Vanara king, अवैक्षत gazed

Seeing his brother struck down by Sugriva, Nikumbha gazed at him as if to burn him in wrath.
ततस्स्रग्दामसन्नद्धंदत्तपञ्चाङ्गुलंशुभम् ।

आददेपरिघंवीरोमहेन्द्रशिखरोपमम् ।।6.77.2।।


ततः then, वीरः hero, स्रग्दामसन्नद्धम्collected together, girded with flowers, दत्तपञ्चाङ्गुलम् measuring five digits in breadth, शुभम् auspicious, महेन्द्रशिखरोपमम् like the peak of Mahendra mountain, परिघम् club, आददे took

Then the hero Nikumbha, girded with flowers measuring five digits in breadth, took an auspicious club like the peak of Mahendra mountain.
हेमपट्टपरिक्षिप्तंवज्रविद्रुमभूषितम् ।

यमदण्डोपमंभीमंरक्षसांभयनाशनम् ।।6.77.3।।


हेमपट्टपरिक्षिप्तम् decked with golden band, वज्रविद्रुमभूषितम् encrusted with diamonds and corals, यमदण्डोपमम्, like the rod of Yama, भीमम् fierce रक्षसाम् Rakshasa, भयनाशनम् dispelled fear

It was decked with a gold band, encrusted with diamonds and corals, in the form of Yama's rod, a fierce one which dispelled fear.
तमाविध्यमहातेजाश्शक्रध्वजसमंतदा ।

निननादविवृत्तास्योनिकुम्भोभीमविक्रमः ।।6.77.4।।


महातेजाः very splendrous, भीमविक्रमः of terrific strength, निकुम्भःNikumbha, शक्रध्वजसमंतदा with the banner of Indra, तम् to him, आविध्य pierced with force, विवृत्तास्यःopened mouth wide, निननाद roared

The club was highly splendorous and of terrific strength with the banner of Indra and Nikumbha took that club roared opening his mouth wide and pierced it with force.
उरोगतेननिष्केणभुजस्थैरङ्गदैरपि ।

कुण्डलाभ्यां च चित्राभ्यांमालया च विचित्रया ।।6.77.5।।

निकुम्भोभूषणैर्भातितेनस्मपरिघेण च ।

यथेन्द्रधनुषामेघस्सविद्युत्स्तनयित्नुमान् ।।6.77.6।।


सःनिकुम्भः that Nikumbha, उरोगतेन on the chest, निष्केण by the golden, भुजस्थैः arms, अङ्गदैःअपि armlets, चित्राभ्याम्wonderful, कुण्डलाभ्याम् earrings, चित्रयाcolourful, मालया च garland s also, भूषणैःornaments, तेन, परिघेण च and with clubs, सविद्युत्स्तनयित्नुमान् lightnings and thunder, इन्द्रधनुषा Indra's bow, मेघःयथा like clouds, भातिस्म shone

Nikumbha was shining with ornaments on his chest, golden armlets on arms, wonderful earrings and wonderful garland s holding clubs in hand, with bow like Indra's and roaring like lightning and thunder in the clouds.
परिघाग्रेणपुष्पोटवातग्रथनिर्महात्मनः ।

प्रजज्वालसघोषश्चविधूमइवपावकः ।।6.77.7।।


महात्मनः great self, परिघाग्रेण circling club, वातग्रथनिः seven winds, पुस्फोट burst, सघोषः by the crash, विधूमःsmokeless, पावकःइव like fire, प्रजज्वाल glowed

By Nikumbha whirling around the club and the conjunction of the seven winds coming in contact with the club in his hand crashed in space and glowed like a smokeless fire burst forth.
नगर्याविटपावत्यागन्धर्वभवनोत्तमैः ।

सतारग्रहनक्षत्रंसचन्द्रंसमहाग्रहम् ।।6.77.8।।

निकुम्भपरिघाघूर्णंभ्रमतीवनभस्थ्सलम् ।


विटपावत्या Vitapavati (Alaka), नगर्या city, गन्धर्वभवनोत्तमैः excellent abodes of Gandharvas, सताराग्रहनक्षत्रम् hosts of stars and mansions, सचन्द्रम् lunar abodes, समहाग्रहम् along with other planet abodes, नभःस्थलम् the heaven, निकुम्भपरिघाघूर्णम् by the spinning of Nikumbha's club, भ्रमतीव revolved round

The heaven with the city of Vitapavati, including the excellent abodes of Gandharvas, the hosts of stars and mansions, the lunar abodes along with other planet abodes revolved round as though it was caused by the spinning of Nikumbha's club.
दुरासदश्चसञ्जज्ञेपरिघाभरणप्रभः ।।6.77.9।।

कपीनांसनिकुम्भाग्निर्युगान्ताग्निरिवोत्थितः ।


परिघाभरणप्रभः glowing by the cluband ornaments, कपीनांस for the Vanaras, निकुम्भाग्निः fire of Nikumbha, उत्थितः burst, युगान्ताग्निःइव as though it is fire at the time of dissolution of the universe, दुरासदःformidable, सञ्जज्ञे to reflect

The glow of the club, the ornaments, and the fire of Nikumbha that burst forth was like the fire at the time of dissolution of the universe. It was formidable for the Vanaras to reflect on.
राक्षसावानराश्चापि न शेकुस्स्पन्दितुंभयात् ।।6.77.10।।

हनूमांस्तुविवृत्योरस्तस्थौतस्याग्रतोबली ।


राक्षसाः Rakshasas, वानराश्चापि even Vanaras, भयात् out of fear, स्पन्दितुम् to move, न शेकुःnot able, बली mighty, हनूमान् तु Hanuman only, उरःchest, विवृत्य showing, तस्थौ stood

The Rakshasas and even Vanaras were not able to move out of fear. Only mighty Hanuman stood there showing his chest.
परिघोपमबाहुस्तुपरिघंभास्करप्रभम् ।।6.77.11।।

बलीबलवतस्तस्यपातयामासवक्षसि ।


परिघोपमबाहः arms like iron bars, बली mighty, भास्करप्रभाम् shining like Sun, परिघम् iron club, बलवतः mighty, तस्य his, वक्षसि on the breast, पातयामासthrew

The Rakshasa, whose arms were like iron bars and shining like the Sun brought it down on the breast of mighty Hanuman.
स्थिरेतस्योरसिव्यूढेपरिघश्शतधाकृतः ।।6.77.12।।

विकीर्यमाणस्सहसाउल्काशतमिवाम्बरे ।


स्थिरे touched, व्यूढेbroad, तस्यउरसि on his chest, परिघःiron club, शतधा hundred splinters, कृतः split, सहसा as soon as, अम्बरे in the sky, उल्काशतमिव like hundred meteors, विकीर्यमाणःcrumbled

As soon as the iron club touched the broad chest (of Hanuman), it split into a hundred splinters, in the sky and crumbled.
स तुतेनप्रहारेणविचचालमहाकपिः ।।6.77.13।।

परिघेणसमाधूतोयथाभूमिचलेऽचलः ।


परिघेण by the iron club, समाधूतः with, सःमहाकपिः that great Vanara, तेन by that, प्रहारेण blow, भूमिचले mountain in earthquake, अचलःयथा not shake, विचचाल steady

The great Vanara did not move and remained steady like a mountain in an earthquake with the iron club touching him.
तथाभिहतस्तेनहनुमान् प्लवगोत्तमः ।।6.77.14।।

मुष्टिंसम्वर्तयामासबलेनातिमहाबलः ।


तेन by that, तथा like that, अभिहतः struck, सःhe, प्लवगोत्तमः foremost of monkeys, अतिमहाबलःextraordinary mighty, हनुमान् Hanuman, बलेन by his strength, मुष्टिम् fist, सम्वर्तयामास clenched violently

Struck by the Rakshasa, Hanuman, the foremost of the monkeys of extraordinary strength clenched his fist violently.
तमुद्यम्यमहातेजानिकुम्भोरसिवीर्यवान् ।।6.77.15।।

अभिचिक्षेपवेगेनवेगवान् वायुविक्रमः ।


महातेजाः highly energetic, वीर्यवान् champion, वेगवान् endowed with speed, वायुविक्रमः close to wind god in valour, तम् those, उद्यम्य raising, वेगेन speedily, निकुम्भोरसि chest of Nikumbha, अभिचिक्षेप crushed

Highly energetic champion endowed with speed, close to wind god in valour raising his fist instantly crushed Nikumbha on the chest.
ततःपुस्फोटचर्मास्यप्रसुस्राव च शोणितम् ।।6.77.16।।

मुष्टिनातेनसञ्जज्ञेमेघेविद्युदिवोत्थिता ।


तेन, मुष्टिना by the fist, तत: then, अस्य his, चर्मपुस्फोट skin split, शोणितं च even blood, प्रसुस्राव started flowing, मेघे cloud, विद्युत् lightning, उत्थिताइव risen like, सञ्जज्ञे appeared

Then Nikumbha's skin split, and blood started flowing, which appeared as though lightning had risen in the cloud.
सःतुतेनप्रहारेणनिकुम्भोविचचाल ह ।।6.77.17।।

स्वस्थश्चापिनिजग्राहहनूमन्तंमहाबलम् ।


तेन by that, प्रहारेण blow, सः he, निकुम्भःNikumbha, विचचाल ह not moved, स्वस्थश्चापि recovering, महाबलम् extraordinary strength, हनुमन्तम् Hanuman, निजग्राह caught hold of

By that blow, Nikumbha was not moved. Recovering from that he caught hold of Hanuman of extraordinary strength.
चुक्रुशुस्तदासङ्ख्येभीमंलङ्कानिवासिनः ।।6.77.18।।

निकुम्भेनोद्यतंदृष्टवाहनूमन्तंमहाबलम् ।


तदा then, सङ्ख्ये in combat, निकुम्भेनNikumbha's, उद्यतम् lifting up, महाबलम् endowed with might, हनूमन्तम् Hanumantha, दृष्टवा seeing, लङ्कानिवासिनः residents of Lanka, भीमम् terribly, विचुक्रुशुः roared

Then seeing Hanuman endowed with might, lifted by Nikumbha in the battlefield the residents of Lanka roared terribly.
तदाह्रियमाणोऽपिकुम्भकर्णात्मजेन ह ।।6.77.19।।

आजघानानिलसुतोवज्रकल्पेनमुष्टिना ।


तेन by that, तदा then, ह्रियमाणःअपि being carried also, अनिलसुतः son of windgod, कुम्भकर्णात्मजेन son of Kumbhakarna, वज्रकल्पेन with his hard adamant, मुष्टिना fist, आजघान hit him.

Even while being carried by Rakshasa also, the son of the wind god hit Kumbhakarna's son with his hard adamant fist.
आत्मानंमोक्षयित्वाथक्षितावभ्यवपद्यत ।।6.77.20।।

हनूमानुन्ममाथाशुनिकुम्भंमारुतात्मजः ।


मारुतात्मजः son of windgod, हनूमान् Hanuman, आत्मानम् himself, मोक्षयित्वा getting released, अथ now, क्षितौ on ground, अभ्यपद्यत springing up, आशु standing, निकुम्भम् Nikumbha, उन्ममाथ tormented

Hanuman, the son of wind god getting himself released from Nikumbha, springing up standing on the ground tormented Nikumbha.
निक्षिप्यपरमायत्तोनिकुम्भंनिष्पिपेष ह ।।6.77.21।।

उत्पत्यचास्यवेगेनपपातोरसिवीर्यवान् ।


परमायत्तः with great effort, निकुम्भम् Nikumbha, निक्षिप्य crushed down, निष्पिपेष ह throwing down, वीरेन hero, उत्पत्य springing up, वेगवान् endowed with speed, अस्य his, उरसि chest, पपात fell

Throwing down Nikumbha with great effort, Hanuman endowed with speed sprang up and fell on his chest.
परिगृह्य च बाहुभ्यांपरिवृत्यशिरोधराम् ।।6.77.22।।

उत्पाटयामानशिरोभैरवंनदतोमहत् ।


बाहुभ्याम् both arms, शिरोधराम् holding his neck, परिगृह्य taking, परिवृत्य twisting round, भैरवम् terribly, नदतः crying, महत् great, शिरःhead, उत्पाटयामानbroke off,

Taking hold of the neck with both arms and twisting it round Hanuman broke off the neck of Nikumbha while he was crying terribly.
अथनिनदतिसादितेनिकुम्भेपवनसुतेनरणेबभूवयुद्धम् ।

दशरथसुतराक्षसेन्द्रसून्वोर्भृशतरमागतरोषयोस्सुभीमम् ।।6.77.23।।


अथ and then, निनदति crying aloud, निकुम्भेNikumbha, रणे in the battlefield, पवनसुतेन by wind god's son, सादिते destroyed, भृशतम् violent, आगतरोषयोःhighly perturbed, दशरथसुतराक्षसेन्द्रसून्वोःDasharatha's son and Makara raksha (son of Khara), सुभीमम् fierce, युद्धम् war, बभूव happened

And thereafter as Nikumbha killed by windgod's son was crying aloud in the battlefield, a violent and fierce war took place between the highly disturbed son of Dasharatha and Rakshasa Makara.
व्यपेतेतुजीवेनिकुम्भस्यहृष्टाविनेदुःप्लवङ्गादिशस्सस्वनुश्च ।

चचालेवचोर्वीपफालेवचद्यौर्भयंराक्षसानांबलंचाविवेश ।।6.77.24।।


निकुम्भस्य Nikumbha's, जीवे life, व्यपेते ceased, प्लवङ्गाः monkeys, हृष्टाः happy, विनेदुःjoy, दिशः quarters, सस्वनुः च resounded, उर्वी earth, चचालेवshaken, च and, द्यौः heaven, पफालेवappeared to crumble, राक्षसानाम् Rakshasas, बलम् army, भयम् fear, आविवेश च overtaken

When Nikumbha's life ceased, monkeys were happy, and their joy resounded in all quarters. Earth was shaken, the Rakshasa army was overtaken by fear and heaven appeared to crumble.
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेसप्तसप्ततितमस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the seventy seventh sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
