[Makara starts his encounter under Ravana's instructions.]

निकुम्भंनिहतंश्रुत्वाकुम्भं च विनिपातितम् ।

रावणःपरमामर्षीप्रजज्वालानलोयथा ।।6.78.1।।


निकुम्भम् Nikumbha, निहतम् killed, कुम्भं च Kumbha and, विनिपातितम् had been killed, श्रुत्वा on hearing, रावणः Ravana, परमामर्षी very furious, अनलोयथा like fire, प्रजज्वाल burning in anger

On hearing that Nikumbha and Kumbha had been killed, Ravana was very furious and burning in anger.
नैरृतःक्रोधशोकाभ्यांद्वाभ्यांतुपरिमूर्छितः ।

खरपुत्रंविशालाक्षंमकराक्षमचोदयत् ।।6.78.2।।


नैरृतः Rakshasa king, क्रोधशोकाभ्याम् overtaken by anger and sorrow, द्वाभ्याम् both, परिमूर्छितःbewildered excessively, विशालाक्षम् broadeyed, खरपुत्रम् Khara's son, मकराक्षम् Makara Rakshasa, अचोदयत् sent for

The Rakshasa king was overtaken by both anger and sorrow, bewildered excessively sent for broadeyed Makara, the son of Khara.
गच्छपुत्रऽमयाऽजाज्ञप्तोबलेनाभिसमवनितः ।

राघवंलक्ष्मणंचैवजहितांश्चवनौकसः ।।6.78.3।।


पुत्र son, मया by me, आज्ञप्तःcommand, अभिसमवनितः accompanied by army, गच्छ going, वनौकसः Vanaras, तां them, राघवम् Raghava, लक्ष्मणंचैव and Lakshman also, जहि kill

"Son! commanded by me, you go accompanied by arm and kill the Vanaras, Raghava and Lakshmana aslo,
रावणस्यवचश्श्रुत्वाशूरमानीखरात्मजः ।

बाढमित्यब्रवीद्धृष्टोमकराक्षोनिशाचरम् ।।6.78.4।।


शूरमानी proclaiming as hero, खरात्मजःson of Khara, मकराक्षःMaka raksha, वचःwords, श्रुत्वा hearing, हृष्टः rejoiced, निशाचरम् Rakshasa, बाढम् इति good, अब्रवीत् said

Rejoicing to hear the words of Ravana, proclaiming himself to be a hero, Maka raksha, the son of Khara said 'good'.
सोऽभिवाद्यदशग्रीवंकृत्वाचापिप्रदक्षिणम् ।

निर्जगामगृहाच्छुभ्राद्रावणस्याज्ञयाबली ।।6.78.5।।


बली mighty, सःhe, दशग्रीवम् tenheaded, अभिवाद्य greeting, प्रदक्षिणंकृत्वाचापि also going round him as tradition, रावणस्य Ravana's, आज्ञया by order, शुभ्रात् early morning, गृहात् from the abode, निर्जगाम went out.

Greeting the tenheaded Rakshasa and going round him according to tradition, the mighty warrior went out from the abode early morning by the command of Ravana.
समीपस्थंबलाध्यक्षंखरपुत्रोऽब्रवीदिदम् ।

रथश्चानीयतांशीघ्रंसैन्यंत्वानीयतांत्वरात् ।।6.78.6।।


खरपुत्रःKhara's son, समीपस्थम् nearby, बलाधक्षम् commanderinchief of the army, इदम् this, अब्रवीत् spoke, शीघ्रम् quickly, रथम् chariot, आनीयताम् brought, सैन्यम् army, त्वरात् quickly, आनीयताम् proceed

Khara's son spoke to the commanderinchief of the army standing nearby 'Let the chariot be brought quickly and the army proceed'.
तस्यतद्वचनंश्रुत्वाबलाध्यक्षोनिशाचरः ।

स्यन्दनं च बलंचैवसमीपंप्रत्यपादयत् ।6.78.7।।


तस्य his, तत् वचनम् those words, श्रुत्वा hearing, बलाध्यक्षः commanderinchief, निशाचरः Rakshasas, स्यन्दनं च responded, बलंचैव army too, समीपम् near, प्रत्यपादयत् placed near

Upon hearing those words, the commanderinchief of the Rakshasas responded and placed the army near him.
प्रदक्षिणंरथंकृत्वाआरुरोहनिशाचरः ।

सूतंसञ्चोदयामासशीघ्रंमेरथमावह ।।6.78.8।।


निशाचरः night ranger, रथम् chariot, प्रदक्षिणंकृत्वा after having gone round, सूतम् charioteer, आरुरोह ascended मेmy, रथम्chariot, शीघ्रम् quickly, आवह get, सञ्चोदयामास drive the chariot

After having gone round the chariot he (Makara) ascended and said to the charioteer, 'let the chariot be driven quickly'.
अथतान्राक्षसान्सर्वान्मकराक्षोऽब्रवीदिदम् ।

यूयंसर्वेप्रयुध्यध्वंपुरस्तान्ममराक्षसाः ।।6.78.9।।


अथ and then, मकराक्षःMaka raksha, तान् his, सर्वान् all, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, इदम् thus, अब्रवीत् spoke, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, यूयम् all of you, सर्वे all, ममmy, पुरस्तात् ahead, प्रयुध्यध्वम् fight violently

Thereafter, Maka raksha spoke to all Rakshasas, 'All of you be ahead of me and fight violently'.
अहंराक्षसराजेनरावणेनमहात्मना ।

आज्ञप्तःसमरेहन्तुंतावुभौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।।6.78.10।।


अहम् I, राक्षसराजेन by Rakshasa king's, महात्मना great self, रावणेन to Ravana, समरे in battle, तौ those, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, उभौ both, हन्तुम् will kill, आज्ञप्तः by his order

"I will kill both Rama and Lakshmana in the battle, by the order of Ravana, the king of Rakshasas."
अद्यरामंवधिष्यामिलक्ष्मणं च निशाचराः ।

शाखामृगं च सुग्रीवंवानरांश्चशरोत्तमैः ।।6.78.11।।


निशाचराः night ranger, अद्य now, रामम् Rama, लक्ष्मणं च and Lakshmana, शाखामृगम् Vanara, सुग्रीवं च Sugriva also, वानरान् च Vanaras also, शरोत्तमैः best of arrows, वधिष्यामि will put an end

"Now I shall put an end to Rama and Lakshmana, Sugriva and the Vanaras with the best of arrows."
अद्यशूलनिपातैश्चवानराणांमहाचमूम् ।

प्रदहिष्यामिसम्प्राप्तांशुष्केन्धनमिवानलः ।।6.78.12।।


अद्य now, सम्प्राप्ताम् going there, वानराणाम् Vanaras, महाचमूम् great army, अनलः fire, शुष्केन्धनमिव burns dry wood, शूलनिपातैः with these pikes, प्रदहिष्यामि will burn

"Going there now, I will terminate the great Vanara army with these pikes just as drywood is burnt by fire."
मकराक्षस्यतच्छ्रुत्वावचनंतेनिशाचराः ।

सर्वेनानायुधोपेताबलवन्तःसमाहिताः ।।6.78.13।।


मकराक्षस्यMaka raksha, तत् then, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, बलवन्तः mighty, ते they, निशाचराः Rakshasas, सर्वे all, नानायुधोपेताःarmed with different weapons, समाहिताःcame

On hearing Maka raksha's words all the mighty Rakshasas came with different kinds of weapons.
तेकामरूपिणस्सरेदंष्ट्रिणःपिङ्गलेक्षणा ।

मातङ्गाइवनर्दन्तोध्वस्तकेशाभयावहाः ।।6.78.14।।

परिवार्यमहाकायामहाकायंखरात्मजम् ।

अभिजघ्नुस्ततोहृष्टाश्चालयन्तोवसुन्धराम् ।।6.78.15।।


कामरूपिणः who could change their form at will, क्रूराः cruel, दंष्ट्रिणः protruding teeth, पिङ्गलेक्षणाः yellow eyes, ध्वस्तकेशाःdishevelled hair, भयावहाःfrightful appearance, महाकायाः huge body size, ते they, ततः then, मातङ्गाःइव like elephants, महाकायम् of huge size, खरात्मजम् son of Khara, परिवार्य surrounding, हृष्टाःjoyously, वसुन्धराम् earth, चालयन्तःshaking, अभिजघ्नुःwent forward

Those who could change their form at will, cruel, with protruding teeth, yellow eyes, dishevelled hair, of frightful appearance, huge like elephants surrounding the son of Khara went joyously forward shaking the earth.
शङ्खभेरीसहस्राणामाहतानांसमन्ततः ।

क्ष्येळितास्फोटितानां च तत्रशब्दोमहानभूत् ।।6.78.16।।


तत्र there, आहतानाम् beating of drums, शङ्खभेरीसहस्राणाम्blowing of thousands of conches, क्षेवळितास्फोटितानां च clappings of arms, महान् great, शब्धः sound, समन्ततःe very where, अभूत् heard

There was a beating of drums, blowing of thousands of conchs, clapping of arms and great sound was heard.
प्रभ्रष्टोऽथकरात्तस्यप्रतोदस्सारथेस्तदा ।

पपातसहसादैवाद्ध्वजस्तस्यतुरक्षसः ।।6.78.17।।


अथ and there, तदा then, तस्य his, सारथेःcharioteer, करात् hand, प्रतोदःlong whip, प्रभ्रष्टःdropped down, तस्यरक्षसः that Rakshasa, ध्वजः standard, सहसाsuddenly, दैवात् by divine will, पपात fallen

There, the long whip dropped from the charioteer's hand and the Rakshasa's standard had fallen suddenly by divine will.
तस्यतेरथसंयुक्ताहयाविक्रमवर्जिताः ।

चरणैराकुलैर्गत्वादीनाःसास्रमुखाययुः ।।6.78.18।।


तस्य his, रथसंयुक्ताः yoke binding the chariot, ते they, हयाःhorses, विक्रमवर्जिताःgiven up their valour, आकुलैःfaltering, चरणैः feet, गत्वा going, दीनाःdesperate, सास्रमुखाः shedding tears, ययुःwent

His horses yoked to the chariot went giving up their valour, faltering feet, desperate and shedding tears.
प्रवातिपवनस्तस्मिन् सपांसुःखरदारुणः ।

निर्याणेतस्यरौद्रस्यमकराक्षस्यदुर्मतेः ।।6.78.19।।


रौद्रस्य angry, दुर्मतेः evil minded, तस्यमकराक्षस्य that Maka raksha, तस्मिन् निर्याणे at his departure, सपांसुः crumbling dust, खरदारुणः dreadful and violent, पवनः wind, प्रवाति blowed.

At the departure of evil minded and angry Maka raksha, dreadful and violent wind blew carrying with crumbling dust.
तानिदृष्टवानिमित्तानिराक्षसावीर्यवत्तमाः ।

अचिन्त्यनिर्गतास्सर्वेयत्रतौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।।6.78.20।।


वीर्यवत्तमाः exceedingly valiant, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, सर्वे all, तानि them, निमित्तानि incidentally, दृष्टवा seeing, अचिन्त्य not taking into account, तौ those, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, यत्र there, निर्गताःwent

Seeing those portents incidentally and not taking into account those Rakshasas went where Rama and Lakshmana were.
घनगजमहिषाङ्गतुल्यवर्णास्समरमखेष्वसकृद्गदासिभिन्नाः ।

अहमहमितियुद्धकौशलास्तेरजनीचराःपरिबभ्रमुर्नदन्तः ।।6.78.21।।


घनगजमहिषाङ्गतुल्यवर्णाः who resembled elephants, clouds and buffaloes in colour, समरमुखेषु to the forefront of war, असकृत् who were wounded, गदासिभिन्नाः with maces and swords, युद्धकौशलाः skilled in warfare, तेरजनीचराः those night rangers, नदन्तःroaring, अहम् अहम् इति I shall fight, परिबभ्रमुःmoved to and from.

Those night rangers who resembled elephants, clouds, and buffaloes in colour, who were skilled in warfare, wounded by maces and swords, moved to and from saying" I shall fight",
