[Commanded by Ravana, Maka raksha goes to fight with Rama and gets killed.]

निर्गतंमकराक्षंतेदृष्टवावानरपुङ्गवाः ।

आप्लुत्यसहसासर्वेयोद्धुकामाव्यवस्थिताः ।।6.79.1।।


सर्वे all, ते those, वानरपुङ्गवाःVanara chiefs, निर्गतम् returning, मकराक्षम् Maka raksha, दृष्टवा seeing, आप्लुत्य jumped, योद्धुकामाः enthusiastic to fight, अवस्थिताःstood ready

On seeing Maka raksha all the Vanara chiefs returned, jumped, and stood ready enthusiastically to fight.
ततःप्रवृत्तंसुमहत्तद्युद्धंरोमहर्षणम् ।

निशाचरैःप्लवङ्गानांदेवानांदानवैरिव ।।6.79.2।।


ततः then, प्लवङ्गानाम् Vanaras, निशाचरैः Rakshasas, देवेनाम् Devas, दानवैरिवDanavas, तत् there, सुहत् together, रोहर्षणम् one's hair stand to raise, युद्धम् battle, प्रवृत्तम् ensued

Then ensued a battle between Rakshasas and Vanaras whichcaused horripilation, just like the battle between Devas and Danavas.
वृक्षशूलनिपातैश्चशिलापरिघपातनैः ।

अन्योन्यंमर्दयन्तिस्मतदाकपिनिशाचराः ।।6.79.3।।


तदा then, कपिनिशाचराः monkeys and Rakshasas, वृक्षशूलनिपातैः च trees and pikes, शिलापरिघपातनैःbringing down rocks and clubs, अन्योन्यम् one another, मर्दयन्तिस्म physically hurting each other.

Then monkeys as well as Rakshasas fought hurling trees and pikes and bringing down rocks and clubs physically hurting each other.
शक्तिखडगगदाकुन्तैस्तोमरैश्चनिशाचराः ।

पट्टसैर्भिण्ढिपालैश्चबाणपातैःसमन्ततः ।।6.79.4।।

पाशमुद्गरदण्डैश्चनिखातैश्चापरेस्तथा ।

कदनंकपिसिंहानांचक्रुस्तेरजनीचराः ।।6.79.5।।


रजनीचराःnight rangers, तेनिशाचराःthose prowlers, शक्तिखडगगदाकुन्तैjavelins, swords, maces, spears, तोमरैश्च lances, पट्टसै: small swords, भिण्डिपालैश्चbhindi Palas (slings for throwing stones), बाणपातैःshafts, पाशमुद्गरदण्डैः च nooses, mallets, and staffs, निखातैःcollection, तथा like that, अन्यैश्च and other weapons, समन्ततः discharging, कपिसिंहानाम् lions among monkeys, कदनम् destruction, चक्रुःcaused

Those prowlers, then ight rangers discharging javelins, swords, maces, spears, lances, small swords, bhindi Palas, shafts, nooses, mallets and staff and other weapons on the lions among the monkeys, caused destruction.
बाणौघैरर्दिताश्चापिखरपुत्रेणवानराः ।

सम्भ्रान्तमनसस्सर्वेदुद्रुवुर्भयपीडिताः ।।6.79.6।।


खरपुत्रेण by Khara's son, बाणौघैः by volley of arrows, अर्धिताः stricken, सर्वे all, वानराः Vanaras, सम्भ्रान्तमनसः perturbed terribly, भयपीडिताः stricken with fear, दुद्रुवुःran

Vanaras perturbed terribly by the volley of arrows of Khara's son were stricken with fear and ran.
तान्दृष्टवाराक्षसास्सर्वेद्रवमाणान्वलीमुखान् ।

नेदुस्तेसिम्हवद्दृष्टाराक्षसाजितकाशिनः ।।6.79.7।।


सर्वे all, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, तान् their, द्रवमाणान् running, वलीमुखान् monkeys, दृष्टवा seeing, नेदुः arrogant, ते they, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, सिम्हवत् like lion roar, दृष्टा seeing, जितकाशिनःas if triumphed

The monkeys saw all the arrogant Rakshasas roaring like lions and running as though triumphed.
विद्रवत्सुतदातेषुवानरेषुसमन्ततः ।

रामस्तान्वारमायासशरवर्षेणराक्षसान् ।।6.79.8।।


तदा then, तेषु them, वानरेषु Vanaras, समन्ततःall over, विद्रवत्सु running, रामःRama, शरवर्षेण by rain of arrows, तान् them, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, वारयामास stopped.

Thereafter, seeing the Vanaras running all over, Rama stopped the Rakshasas by rain of arrows.
रितान्राक्षसान्दृष्टवामकराक्षोनिशाचरः ।

क्रोधानलसमाविष्टोवचनंचेदमब्रवीत् ।।6.79.9।।


वारितान् intercepted, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, दृष्टवाseeing, निशाचरःnight ranger, मकराक्षःMaka raksha, क्रोधानलसमाविष्टःovertaken by fire of anger, इदम् this, वचनं च words, अब्रवीत्spoke

Seeing the intercepted Rakshasas, the night ranger Maka raksha was overtaken by fire of anger spoke these words.
तिष्ठराम मयासार्धंद्वन्द्वयुद्धंददामिते ।

त्याजयिष्यामितेप्राणान् धनुर्मुक्सैशशितैश्शरैः ।।6.79.10।।


राम Rama, तिष्ठ stop, मयासार्धम् with me will take place, शितैः sharpened, शरैः arrows, द्वन्ध्वयुद्धम् duel fight, भविष्यति will give you, धनुर्मुक्स्सैः arrows release from my bow, तेyou, ददामि will give you, प्राणान् life, त्याजयिष्यामि relieve you

"Rama Stop. Duel will take place with me. I will give you sharpened arrows from my bow and relieve you of your life."
यत्तदादण्डकारण्येपितरंहतवान्मम ।

तदग्रतःस्वकर्मस्थंदृष्टवारोषोऽभिवर्धते ।।6.79.11।।


तदा then, दण्डकारण्ये in D and akaranya, मम my, पितरम् father, यत् there, हतवान् was killed, तत् that, स्वकर्मस्थम् for the same cause, अग्रतःin front, दृष्टवा seeing, रोषःanger, अभिवर्धते is increasing

"Then in Dandakaranya my father was killed. Now for the samereason you are in front of me. Seeing you my anger is increasing."
दह्यन्तेधृशमङ्गानिदुरात्मन्ममराघव ।

यन्मयासि न दृष्टस्त्वंतस्मिन् कालेमहावने ।।6.79.12।।


दुरात्मन् evil minded, राघव Raghava, तस्मिन् काले at that mean time, त्वम् your, मया by me, महावने in the great forest (D and aka), यत् there, न दृष्टः no seen असि by, मम me, अङ्गानि limbs, भृशम् in anger, दह्यन्ते burning

"O Evil minded Raghava! at that time, I did not see you in D and aka forest. My limbs are burning in anger."
दिष्ट्यासिदर्शनंराम ममत्वंप्राप्तवानिह ।

काङ्क्षितोऽसिक्षुधार्तस्यसिंहस्येवेतरोमृगः ।।6.79.13।।


राम Rama, दिष्ट्या good fortune, त्वम् you, इह here, मम my, दर्शनम् seen, प्राप्तवान् became possible, क्षधार्तस्य hungry, सिंहस्य lion's, इह here, मृगःइव like animal, काङ्क्षितःwaiting for you, असि I am

"Rama! To my good fortune it became possible for me to see you here. Just as a hungry lion waits for an animal, I am waiting for you."
अद्यमद्बाणवेगेनप्रेतराडिवषयंगतः ।

येत्वयानिहताःशूराःसहतैश्चसमेष्यसि ।।6.79.14।।


अद्य now, मद्भाणवेगेन by the speed of my arrow, प्रेतराडिवषयम् the realm of Yama, गतःgone, त्वया you, ये there, शूराःdemons, निहताः killed, तैःसह with them, समेष्यसि च will send you

"Now by the speed of my arrow I will send you totherealm of Yama and there you will be along with the demons killed by you."
बहुनात्रकिमुक्तेनशृणुराम वचोमम ।

पश्यन्तुसकलालोकास्त्वा, मांचैवरणाजिरे ।।6.79.15।।


राम Rama, अत्र there, बहुना many, उक्तेन talk, किम् why, मम my, वचः words, शृणु listen, सकलाः all, लोकाःworlds, रणाजिरे in the field of battle, त्वाम् your, मांचैव me too, पश्यन्तु will see

"Rama, why talk so much? Listen to my words. Let people in all worldssee you and me in the battlefield."
अस्त्रैर्वागदयावापिबाहुभ्यांवामहाहवे ।

अभ्यस्तंयेनवाराम तेनैवयुधिवर्तताम् ।।6.79.16।।


राम Rama, अस्त्रैर्वा by weapons, गदयावापि or by mace, येन or else, अभ्यस्तम् with hands, तेनैव any one, महाहवे military practice, युधि fight, वर्तताम् said

"By weapons, or by mace or else with hand s or any other weapon or with your military practice, you fight, he said to Rama."
मकराक्ष्वचश्श्रुत्वारामोदशरथात्मजः ।

अब्रवीत्प्रहसन्वाक्यमुत्तरोत्तरवादिनम् ।।6.79.17।।


दशरथात्मजःDasharatha's son, रामःRama, मकराक्ष्वचःMaka raksha's, श्रुत्वा on hearing, प्रहसन् laughing, उत्तरोत्तरवादिनम् speaking again and again, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् said

Laughing at the words of Maka raksha who was speaking again and again Rama said.
कत्थसेकिंवृथारक्षो बहून्यसदृशानिते ।

न रणेशक्यतेजेतुंविनायुद्धेनवाग्भलात् ।।6.79.18।।


रक्षः Rakshasa, असदृशानि in What can't be accomplished, बहूनि many, वृथा wasteful, किंकत्थसे why indulge, युद्धेनविना without war, वाग्भलात् force of speech, रणे in war, जेतुम् victory, ते by you, न शक्यम् not possible

"Rakshasa! Why so much of wasteful talk about What you can't accomplish? Victory is not possible on the battlefield with your force of speech"
चतुर्दशसहस्राणिरक्षसांत्वत्पिता च यः ।

त्रिशिरादूषणश्चापिदण्डकेनिहतामया ।।6.79.19।।


दण्डके in Dandaka, मया by me alone, रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, चतुर्दश fourteen, सहस्राणि thousands, यः there, त्वत्पिता your father, त्रिशिराःTrisira, दूषणश्चापि and Dooshana also, निहताः were killed

"In Dandaka, fourteen thousand Rakshasas, your father, Trisira, and also Dooshana were killed by me alone."
स्वाशितास्तवमांसेनगृध्रगोमायुवायसाः ।

भविष्यन्त्यद्यवैपाप तीक्ष्णतुण्डनखाङ्कुराः ।।6.79.20।।


पाप sinner, अद्य today, तीक्ष्णतुण्डनखाङ्कुराःsharpbeaks, goad like claws, गृध्रगोमायुवायसाः vultures, jackals, and crows, तवमांसेन for your flesh, स्वाशिताः satiated, भविष्यन्ति will be also

"O Sinner! Today vultures, jackals and crows with sharp beaks and goads like claws will also be satiated with your flesh."
राघवेणैवमुक्तस्तुमकराक्षोमहाबलः ।

बाणौघानमुचत्तस्मैराघवायरणाजिरे ।।6.79.21।।


राघवेण by Raghava, एवम् in that manner, उक्तःspoken, महाबलः endowed with extraordinary strength, मकराक्षः Maka raksha, रणाजिरे in the battlefield, राघवाय on Rama, बाणौघम् war of arrows, अमुचत् released

Spoken in that manner by Raghava in the battlefield, Maka raksha, endowed with extraordinary strength, released a volley of arrows on Rama.
तान्शरान् शरवर्षेणरामश्चिच्छेदनैकधा ।

निपेतुर्भुवितेछिन्नारुक्मपुङ्खास्सहस्रशः ।।6.79.22।।


रामः Rama, तान् those, शरान् arrows, शरवर्षेण rain of arrows, नैकधा Rakshasa, चिच्छेद shattered, रुक्मपुङ्खाः golden feathers, ते those, छिन्नाः pieces, सहस्रशः thousand, भुवि ground, निपेतुः fallen

Rama rained volley of arrows on the Rakshasa and shattered those golden feathered arrows which fell on the ground into thousands of pieces.
तद्युद्धमभवत्तत्रसमेत्यान्योन्यमोजसा ।

खरराक्षसपुत्रस्यसूनोर्धशरथस्य च ।।6.79.23।।


तत्र there, अन्योन्यम् one another, समेत्य meeting, खरराक्षसपुत्रस्यKhara's son's, दशरथस्यDasharatha's, सूनोः च son's, ओजसाfierce, तत् that, युद्धम् combat, अभवत् happened

On meeting one another between Khara's son and Dasharatha's son a fierce comb at happened.
जीमूतयोरिवाकाशेशब्दोज्यातलयोस्तदा ।

धनुर्मुक्तःस्वनोत्कृष्टश्श्रूयते च रणाजिरे ।।6.79.24।।


तदा then, रणाजिरे in the battlefield, धनुर्मुक्तः released from bow, ज्यातलयोः by the hand, स्वनोत्कृष्टः by the friction of bowstring, शब्दः sound, आकाशे sky, जीमूतयोरिव like thunder of cloud, श्रूयते च filled

Then the sound released by the friction of the bowstring and the hand (of the two heroes) filled the sky like thunder of clouds.
देवदानवगन्धर्वाःकिन्नराश्चमहोरगाः ।

अन्तरिक्षगतास्सर्वेद्रष्टुकामास्तदद्भुतम् ।।6.79.25।।


अद्भुतम् wonderful, तत् that, द्रष्टुकामाः evil deed, सर्वे all, देवदानवगन्धर्वाः Devas, Danavas and Ghand harvas, किन्नराश्च Kinnaras also, महोरगाः huge serpents, अन्तरिक्षगताःstood in the space

Devas, Danavas, Ghand arvas, Kinnaras and huge serpents all of them stood in space to look at the wonderful evil deed.
विद्धमन्योन्यगात्रेषुद्विगुणंवर्धतेपरम् ।

कृतप्रतिकृतान्योन्यंकुरुतांतौरणाजिरे ।।6.79.26।।


अन्योन्यगात्रेषु with each other's limbs, विद्धम् piercing, परम् very, द्विगुणम् redoubled, वर्धते remained, तौ those, रणाजिरे in the battlefield, कृतप्रतिकृतान्योन्यम् countering one another and inflicting, कुरुताम् hitting each other

Even though they were piercing one another with limbs, their strength remained doubled in the battlefield. Each of them was countering the other and inflicting and hitting each other.
राममुक्तांस्तुबाणौघान् राक्षसस्त्वच्छिनद्रणे ।

रक्षोमुक्तांस्तुरामोवैनैकथाप्राच्छिनच्छरैः ।।6.79.27।।


रणे in combat, राममुक्तान् released by Rama, बाणौघान् arrows, राक्षसः Rakshasa, अच्छिनत् split, रामःRama, रक्षोमुक्तान् released by Rakshasa, शरैः arrows, नैकथा alone, प्राच्छिनत् shattered

In the comb at Rakshasa split the arrows released by Rama and Rakshasa shattered the arrows released by Rama.
बाणौघैर्विततास्सर्वादिशश्चप्रदिशस्तथा ।

सञ्छन्नावसुधाचैवसमन्तान्नप्रकाशते ।।6.79.28।।


सर्वाः all, दिशश्च quarters, तथा that way, प्रदिशः च intermediate point, बाणौघैः by arrows, वितताःcollected, समन्तात् all over, वसुधाचैव even the earth, सञ्छन्ना covered, न प्रकाशते not seen

All quarters were covered by the arrows in that manner all over and even the intermediate point, the earth could not be seen.
तःक्रुद्धोमहाबाहुर्धनुच्शिच्छेदरक्षसः ।

अष्टाभिरथनाराचैस्सूतंविव्याधराघवः ।।6.79.29।।


ततः then, संयुगे in the combat, क्रुद्धःenraged, महाबाहुः endowed with broad shoulders, राघवःRaghava, धनुः bow, चिच्छेद split, अथ and then, अष्टाभिः eight also, नाराचैःsteel arrows, सूतम् charioteer, विव्याध struck

Then broad shouldered Raghava was enraged and split the bow with eight steel arrows and the charioteer also.
भित्त्वारथंशरैरामोहत्वाआश्वानपातयत् ।

विरथोवसुधास्थश्चमकराक्षोनिशाचरः ।।6.79.30।।


रामः Rama, शरैः arrows, रथम् chariot, भित्त्वा broken, अश्वान् horses, हत्वा killed, अपातयत् laid them, निशाचरः night ranger, सःमकराक्षः that Maka raksha, विरथःdeprived of chariot, वसुधास्थःstood on the ground

Rama broke the chariot, killed the horses, and laid down the night ranger Maka raksha. Deprived of the chariot he stood on the ground.
तत्तिष्ठद्वसुधांरक्षश्शूलंजग्राहपाणिना ।

त्रासनंसर्वभूतानांयुगान्ताग्निसमप्रभम् ।।6.79.31।।


वसुधाम् on the ground, तिष्ठत्standing, तत् that, रक्षः Rakshasa, सर्वभूतानाम् all beings, त्रासनम् feared, युगान्ताग्निसमप्रभम् fire at the time of dissolution, शूलम् pike, पाणिना by the hand, जग्राह seized

Standing on the ground that Rakshasa who created fear among all beings shone like fire at the time of dissolution of the universe, seized his pike in hand.
दुरवापम् महच्छूलंरुद्रदत्तंभयङ्करम् ।

जाज्वल्यमानमाकाशेसंहारास्त्रमिवापरम् ।।6.79.32।।

यंदृष्टवादेवताःसर्वाभयार्ताविद्रुतादिशः ।


यं which, दृष्टवा seeing, सर्वाः all, देवताः gods, भयार्ताः were panic, दिशः directions, विद्रुताः glowing brightly, दुरवापम् cruel, रुद्रदत्तम् given by Rudra, भयङ्करम् frightening, आकाशे sky, जाज्वल्यमानम् glowing like flame, अपरम् moreover, संहारास्त्रम् इव like weapon of universal destruction, महत् great, शूलम् pike.

Seeing that pike, which was glowing like flame, by which the quarters were glowing brightly in the sky like the flame, which had been given by Rudra, which caused fear like another weapon of destruction, all gods fled in panic in all directions.
विभ्राम्यतुमहच्छूलंप्रज्वलन्तन्निशाचरः ।।6.79.33।।

स क्रोधाप्राहिणोत्तस्मैराघवायमहात्मने ।


सःनिशाचरः that night ranger, प्रज्वलन्तम् glowing, महत् great, शूलम् pike, विभ्राम्य च whirling round and round, क्रोधात् furiously, महात्मने great self, तस्मैin that conflict, राघवाय at Raghava, प्राहिणोत् hurled.

The night ranger whirling round and round the glowing pike furiously hurled at Raghava in that conflict.
तमापतन्तंज्वलितंखरपुत्रकराच्च्युतम् ।।6.79.34।।

बाणैत्रिभिराकाशेशूलंचिच्छेदराघवः ।


राघवः Raghava, ज्वलितम् burning, खरपुत्रकरात् Khara's son's hand, च्युतम् released, आपतन्तम् as it was flying, तंशूलम् that pike, त्रिभिः three, बाणास्तु arrows, आकाशे in the sky, चिच्छेद split.

Raghava split with his three arrows the burning pike released from the hand of Khara's son while it was still flying in the sky.
सच्छन्नोनैकथाशूलोदिव्यहाटकमण्डितः ।।6.79.35।।

व्यशीर्यतमहोल्केवरामबाणार्दितोभुवि ।


रामबाणार्दितः struck by the arrows of Rama, नैकधा many, छिन्नः broken into pieces, दिव्यहाटकमण्डितः decorated with gold, सःशूलः that pike, महोल्केव like huge fire sticks, भुवि ground, व्यशीर्यत fell down.

That pike, which was decorated with gold, broke into pieces, and fell down like fire sticks by the many supreme arrows of Rama.
च्छूलंनिहतंदृष्टवारामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।।6.79.36।।

साधुसावधितिभूतानिव्याहरन्तिनभोगताः ।


अक्लिष्टकर्मणा of unwearied action, रामेण by Rama, निहतम् destroyed, तत् that, शूलम् pike, दृष्टवा seeing, भूतानि beings, नभोगताःstanding, साधुसाधुइति well done well done, व्याहरन्तितं praised

Seeing the unwearied action of Raghava in destroying the pike, the beings in the sky praised him saying," well done, well done."
तंदृष्टवानिहतंशूलंमकराक्षोनिशाचरः ।।6.79.37।।

मुष्टिमुद्यम्यकाकुत्स्थंतिष्ठतिष्ठेतिचाब्रवीत् ।


निशाचरः night ranger, मकराक्षःMakaraksha, तम् his, शूलम् pike, निहतम् destroyed, दृष्टवा seeing, मुष्टिम् fist, उद्यम्य lifting up, तिष्ठतिष्ठ wait wait, इति this, काकुत्स्थम् to Kakuthsa, अब्रवीत् spoke

The night ranger Makaraksha seeing his pike destroyed lifting up his fist said this to Kakuthsa, "Wait, wait."
सःतंदृष्टवाऽपतन्तंवैप्रहस्यरघुनन्दनः ।।6.79.38।।

पावकास्त्रंततोरामस्सन्दधेतुशरासने ।


ततः then, रघुनन्दनः beloved of Raghus, सःरामः that Rama, आपतन्तम् advancing, तम् that, दृष्टवा seeing, प्रहस्य laughing, पावकास्त्रम् missile presided over by fire god, शरासने arrow, सन्दधेवै fixed

Then Rama the beloved of Raghus, laughing at Maka raksha, fixed missile presided by fire god.
तेनास्त्रणहतंरक्षःकाकुत्थ्सेनतदारणे ।।6.79.39।।

सञ्चिन्नहृदयंतत्रपपात च ममार च ।


तदा then, काकुत्थ्सेन by Kakuthsa, तेन by that, अस्त्रण missile, हतम् killed, रक्षः raksha, सञ्चिन्नहृदयं heart split open, तत्र there, रणए in the battlefield, पपात fell down, ममार च dead

Then struck in the battlefield by that missile of Kakuthsa, the Rakshasa fell down with his heart split open and died.
दृष्टवातेराक्षसास्सर्वेमकराक्षस्यपातनम् ।।6.79.40।।

लङ्कामेवप्रधावन्तरामबाणभयार्दिताः ।


सर्वे all, तेराक्षसाः those Rakshasas, मकराक्षस्य Maka raksha's, पातनम् fallen, दृष्टवा seeing, रामबाणभयार्धिताः scared of Rama's arrow, लङ्कामेव straight to Lanka, प्रधावन्त ran

Seeing Maka raksha fall, those Rakshasas became scared of Rama's arrow and ran straight to Lanka.
दशरथनृपसूनुबाणवेगैःरजनिचरंनिहतंखरात्मजंतम् ।

ददृशुरथदेवताःप्रहृष्टागिरिमववज्रहतंक्षितौकीर्णम् ।।6.79.41।।


अथ and then, दशरथनृपसूनुबाणवेगैः by the force of Dasharatha's son's arrow, क्षितौनिहतम् fallen dead, खरात्मजम् Khara's son, तम् him, रजनिचरम् night ranger, देवाताःDevatas, प्रहृष्टाः rejoiced, वज्रहतम् diamond bolt like, विकीर्णम् shattered, गिरिमिव like mountain, ददृशुःseemed

Khara's son fell dead by the force of Rama's like arrow and the Devatas rejoiced seeing the night ranger shattered like a mountain struck by diamond bolt.
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेएकोनाशीतितमस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the seventy ninth sarga of the Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
