[Dreadful and tumultuous fight takes place between Lakshmana and Indrajith with an exchange of a volley of arrows.]

ततश्शरान् दाशरथिस्सन्धायामित्रकर्शणः ।

ससर्जराक्षसेन्द्रायकृद्धस्सर्पइवश्वसन् ।।6.89.1।।


ततः then, अमित्रकर्शणः tamer of enemies, दाशरथिः Dasharatha's son, शरान् arrows, सन्धाय fixing, क्रुद्धः angry, सर्पःइव like serpent, श्वसन् sighing, राक्षसेन्द्राय on Rakshasa king, ससर्ज discharged

Then Lakshmana, the tamer of enemies, sighs in anger like a serpent, fixing his arrows discharged on Rakshasa king.
तस्यज्यातलनिर्घोषं स श्रुत्वाराक्षसाधिपः ।

विवर्णवदनोभूत्वालक्ष्मणंसमुदैक्षत ।।6.89.2।।


सः he, राक्षसाधिपः Lord of Rakshasas, तस्य his, ज्यातलनिर्घोषम् the sound of bow string, श्रुत्वा hearing, विवर्णवदनः pale faced, भूत्वा, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, समुदैक्षत looked at

On hearing the sound of the bow string of Laksmana the Lord of Rakshasa became pale in face and looked at Lakshmana.
विषण्णवदनंदृष्टवाराक्षसंरावणात्मजे ।

सौमित्रिंयुद्धसंयुक्तंप्रत्युवाचविभीषणः ।।6.89.3।।


विभीषणः Vibheeshana, विषण्णवदनम् pale faced, रावणात्मजे Ravana's son, राक्षसम् Rakshasa, दृष्टवा seeing, युद्धसंयुक्तम् ready for combat, सौमित्रिम् to Saumithri, प्रत्युवाच replied

Seeing Ravana's son, pale faced, Vibheeshana replied as follows to Saumithri who was ready for combat.
निमित्तान्युपपश्यामियान्यस्मिन् रावणात्मजे ।

त्वरतेनमहाबाहोभग्नएष न संशयः ।।6.89.4।।


महाबाहो broadshouldered, अस्मिन् him, रावणात्मने Ravana's son, यानि on the basis of, निमित्तानि indications, उपपश्यामि having seen, तेन his, एषः in that way, भग्नः broken, संशयः no doubt, न not, त्वर is clear

"On the basis of the indications of the pale face of Ravana's son, it is clear that he is broken at heart. No doubt about it."
ततस्सन्धायसौमित्रिश्शरानग्निशिखोपमान् ।

मुमोचनिशितांस्तस्मिन् सर्पानिवमहाविषान् ।।6.89.5।।


ततः then, सौमित्रिः Saumithri, अग्निशिखोपमान् like tongues of fire, निशितान् shining, शरान् arrows, सन्धाय fitted, महाविषान् venomous, सर्पानिव like snakes, तस्मिन् his, मुमोच discharged

Then Saumithri fitted his bow with shining arrows that were like tongues of fire, which resembled venomous serpents and discharged.
शक्राशनिसमस्पर्शैर्लक्ष्मणेनाहतश्शरैः ।

मुहूर्तमभवन्मूक्षःसर्वसंक्षुभितेन्द्रियः ।।6.89.6।।


लक्ष्मणेन Lakshmana, शक्राशनिसमस्पर्शैः struck by Indra's thunderbolt like, शरैः arrows, आहतः attacked, सर्वसंक्षुभितेन्द्रियः all sense organs, मुहूर्तम् for a short while, मूढः excited, अभवत् remained

Struck by Indra's thunderbolt like arrows of Lakshmana, all sense organs of Indrajith remained excited for a short while.
उपलभ्यमुहूर्तेनसंज्ञांप्रत्यागतेन्द्रियः ।

ददर्शावस्थितंवीरंवीरोदशरथात्मजम् ।।6.89.7।।


मुहूर्तेन in a short while, संज्ञाम् gaining consciousness, उपलभ्य getting up, प्रत्यागतेन्द्रियः returned to normalcy, वीरो heroic, अवस्थितम् stood, वीरम् heroic, दशरथात्मजम् Dasharatha's son, ददर्श saw

Heroic son of Ravana gained consciousness in a short while and returning to normalcy saw the heroic son of Dasharatha.
सोऽभिचक्रामसौमित्रिंरोषात्संरक्तलोचनः ।

अब्रवीच्चैनमासाद्यपुनस्सपरुषंवचः ।।6.89.8।।


सः he, रोषात् enraged, संरक्तलोचनः eyes turned red, सौमित्रिम् at Saumithri, अभिचक्राम advanced towards, सः he, एनम् in this way, आसाद्य approaching, परुषम् harsh, वचःwords, पुनःagain, अब्रवीत् च spoke

He (Indrajith), enraged and eyes turned red, advancing towards Lakshmana, and approaching him again spoke in this way harshly.
किं न स्मरसितद्युद्धेप्रथमेमत्पराक्रमम् ।

निबद्धस्त्वंसहभ्रात्रायदाभुविविचेष्टसे ।।6.89.9।।


त्वम् your, भ्रात्रास brother, निबद्धः bound, यदा that time, भुवि ground, विचेष्टसे fallen, प्रथमे first, युद्धे combat, तत् that, मत्पराक्रमम् my valour, न स्मरसि not rememberकिम् why

"Do you not remember that in the first combat your brother bound by me had fallen on the ground. Why do you not remember my valour?"
युवांखलुमहायुद्धेशक्रानिसमैश्शरैः ।

शायितौप्रथमंभूमौविसंज्ञौसपुरस्सरौ ।।6.89.10।।


सपुरःसरौ formerly in the course of battle, युवाम् you two, प्रथमम् first, महायुद्धे great combat, शक्राशनिसमैः like Indra's thunderbolt and Asani, शरैः arrows, विसंज्ञौ lost senses, भूमौ, ground शायितौ lay down

"Formerly in the course of the first battle, the great combat, you two were laid down on ground having lost senses struck by my thunderbolt like arrows and Asani of Indra."
स्मृतिर्वानास्तितेमन्येव्यक्तंवायमसादनम् ।

गन्तुमिच्छसियस्मात्त्वमंधर्षयितुमिच्छसि ।।6.89.11।।


त्त्वमं you both, माम् my, अधर्षयितुम् knowing my valour, यस्मात् this way, इच्छसि desire, ते you, स्मृतिः memory, नास्तिवा has lost is it, व्यक्तम् tell me, यमसादनम् Yama's abode, गन्तुम् will send, इच्छसिवा you like to go, मन्ये think

"Knowing my valour, you have come. Have you lost memory or do you desire to go to Yama's abode? Tell me."
यदितेप्रथमेयुद्धे न दृष्टोमत्पराक्रमः ।

अद्यतेदर्शयिष्यामितिष्ठेदानींव्यवस्थितः ।।6.89.12।।


प्रथमे first, युद्धे combat, ते to you, मत्पराक्रमः my courage, न दृष्टःयदि if not seen, अद्य now, ते to you, दर्शयिष्यामि will exhibit, इदानीम् this time, व्यवस्थितः stand, तिष्ठ fight

"If you have not seen my courage in the first combat, now I will exhibit. Stand and fight now."
इत्युक्त्वासप्तभिर्भाणैरभिविव्याथलक्ष्मणम् ।

दशभिस्तुहनूमन्तंतीक्ष्णधाश्शरोत्तमैः ।।6.89.13।।


इति thus, उक्त्वा spoken, सप्तभिःseven, बाणैःshafts, लक्ष्मणम् at Lakshmana, विव्याथ pierced, तीक्ष्णधारैः pointed shafts, दशभिः ten, शरोत्तमैः best of shafts, हनूमन्तम् at Hanuman

Having spoken that way, Indrajith pierced Lakshmana with seven pointed shafts and Hanuman with ten best of shafts.
ततःशरशतेनैवसुप्रयुक्तेनवीर्यवान् ।

क्रोथाव्दिगुणसम्रब्धोनिर्बिभेदविभीषणम् ।।6.89.14।।


ततः then, वीर्यवान् valiant, क्रोधात् in anger, द्विगुणसम्रब्धःdoubly angry, सुप्रयुक्तेन well targeted, शरशतेनैव a hundred arrows, विभीषणम् Vibheeshana, निर्भिभेद pierced

Then valiant Rakshasa, doubly angry pierced well targeted hundred arrows at Vibheeshana.
तद्दष्टवेन्द्रजिताकर्मकृतंरामानुजस्तदा ।

अचिन्तयित्वाप्रहसन्नैतत्किञ्चिदितिब्रुवन् ।।6.89.15।।

मुमोच च शरान् घोरान् सम्गृह्यनरपुङ्गवः ।

अभीतवदनःक्रुद्धोरावणिंलक्ष्मणोयुधि ।।6.89.16।।


तदा then, रामानुजः Rama's brother, नरपुङ्गवः best of men, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, युधि in war, इन्द्रजिता Indrajith, कृतम् sake, तत् that, कर्म action, दृष्टवा seeing, अचिन्तयित्वा not minding, प्रहसन् laughing, किञ्चित् a little, न not, इति this, ब्रुवन् said, अभीतवदनः fearless face, क्रुद्धः angry, रावणिम् Indrajith, घोरान् dreadful, शरान् arrow, सम्गृह्य taking, मुमोच discharged

Then Lakshmana, the foremost among men, seeing Indrajith not minding his action even a little, laughing said," these arrows are not causing even a little pain." Then fearless Lakshmana discharged a dreadful arrow at Indrajith.
नैवंरणगताःशूराःप्रहरन्तिनिशाचर ।

लघवश्चाल्पवीर्याश्चशरासुखास्तवहीमे ।।6.89.17।।


निशाचर night ranger, रणगताः coming for war, शूराः heroes, एवम् this way, प्रहरन्ति strike, तव your, इमेशराः these arrows, लघवश्च weak, अल्पवीर्याश्च less painful, सुखाःहि conducive

"O Night ranger! Heroes coming for war do not strike this way. These arrows are weak, so not painful but conducive."
नैवंशूरास्तुयुध्यन्तेसमरेजयकाङ्क्षिणः ।

इत्येवंतंब्रुवाणस्तुधन्वीशरैरभिववर्ष ह ।।6.89.18।।


समरे in war, जयकाङ्क्षिणः seeking victory, शूराः heroes, एवम् in that way, न युध्यन्ते not fight, इत्येवम् this way, ब्रुवाणस्तु speaking, धन्वी bow, शरैः arrows, अभिववर्ष ह rained arrows

"Heroes seeking victory in that way do not fight". Thus speaking, Lakshmana rained arrows.
स्यबाणैस्सुविध्वस्तंकवचंकाञ्चनंमहत् ।

व्यशीर्यतरथोपस्थेताराजालमिव्बारात् ।।6.89.19।।


तस्य his, बाणैः arrows, सुविधस्तम् shattered by, काञ्चनम् with gold, महत्, कवचम् shield, अम्बरात् from the sky, ताराजालमिव like a cluster of stars, रथोपस्थे on the chariot, व्यशीर्यत dropped

Shattered by the arrows, the shield of Indrajith covered with gold dropped in the chariot like a mass of stars from the sky.
विधूतवर्मानाराचैर्भभूव स कृतव्रणः ।

इन्द्रजित्समरेवीरःप्रत्यूषेभानुमानिव ।।6.89.20।।


नाराचैः iron arrows, विधूतवर्मा shattered shield, कृतव्रणः injured, वीरः hero, इन्द्रजित् Indrajith, समरे in combat, प्रत्यूषे, भानुमानिव like the morning sun, बभूव appeared

Indrajith's shield shattered by the iron arrows, (of Lakshmana) in the combat, he seemed (bathed in blood) like the morning Sun.
ततःशरसहस्रेणसङ्क्रुद्धोरावणात्मजः ।

बिभेदसमरेवीरोलक्ष्मणंभीमविक्रमः ।।6.89.21।।


ततः then, वीरः hero, भीमविक्रमः of terrific valour, रावणात्मजः Ravana's son, सङ्क्रुद्धः enraged, समरे in war, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, शरसहस्रेण with thousand arrows, बिभे pierced

Then enraged Ravana's son endowed with terrific valour pierced Lakshmana with a thousand arrows.
व्यशीर्यतमहद्धिव्यंकवचंलक्ष्मणस्य च ।

कृतप्रतिकृतान्योन्यंबभूवतुरभिद्रुतौ ।।6.89.22।।


लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, महत् mighty, दिव्यम् wonderful, च कवचम् that shield, व्यशीर्यत shattered, कृतप्रतिकृतान्योन्यम् took offensive as well as retaliated each other, अभिद्रुतौ swiftly, बभूवतुः moving

Lakshmana's mighty and wonderful shield also got shattered. Both took offense as well as retaliated each other moving swiftly.
अभीक्ष्णंनिश्श्वसन्तौतौयुध्येतांतुमुलंयुधि ।

शरसङ्कृत्तसर्वाङ्गौसर्वतोरुधिरोक्षितौ ।।6.89.23।।


युधि in war, शरसङ्कृत्तसर्वाङ्गौ limbs wounded by arrows, सर्वतः allover, रुधिरोक्षितौ bathed in blood, तौ both, अभीक्ष्णम् again and again, निश्श्वसन्तौ breathing heavily, तुमुलम् vehemently, युध्येताम् fought

Wounded all over the body in war and bathed in blood, breathing heavily again and again both of them fought vehemently.
सुदीर्घकालंतौवीरावन्योन्यनिशितैःशरैः ।

ततक्षतुर्महात्मानौरणकर्मविहारदौ ।।6.89.24।।


महात्मानौ great souls, रणकर्मविशारदौ experts in fighting, तौ both, वीरौ heroes, सुदीर्घकालम् for long, अन्योन्यम् one another, निशितैः sharp, शरैः arrows, ततक्षतुःtore

Both heroes, being experts in fighting, tore each other with sharp arrows for long.
बभूवतुश्चात्मजयेयत्तौभीमपराक्रमौ ।

तौशरौघैस्तदाकीर्णौनिकृत्तकवचध्वजौ ।।6.89.25।।

सृजन्तौरुधिरंचोष्णंजलंप्रस्रवणाविव ।


भीमपराक्रमौ of terrible valour, आत्मजये each of them to win, यत्तौ they both, बभूवतुः moving, शरौघैः arrows of both, तदा then, सङ्कीर्णौ mixed together, निकृत्तकवचध्वजौ armour and standards torn, तौ both, उष्णम् hot, रुधिरम् blood, सृजन्तौ waterfalls, जलम् water, प्रस्रवणाविव gushing

Both of them of terrible valour, each of them wanting to win, moving together their armour and standards torn, started emitting hot blood from their body like waterfalls gushing out.
शरवर्षंततोघोरंमुञ्चतोर्भीमनिःस्वनम् ।।6.89.26।।

सासारयोरिवाकाशेनीलयोःकालमेघयोः ।

तयोरथमहान्कालोव्यत्ययाद्युध्यमानयोः ।।6.89.27।।

न च तौयुद्धवैमुख्यंश्रमंवाप्युपजग्मतुः ।


ततः then, भीमनिःस्वनम् terrific sound, घोरम् dreadful, शरवर्षम् rain of arrows, मुञ्चतोः set free, आकाशे from the sky, सासारयोः having bow, नीलयोः dark, कालमेघयोरिव clouds like at the time dissolution, युध्यमानयोः started fighting, तयोः both of them, अथ now, महान् great, कालःlong, व्यत्ययात् from battlefield, तौ both, युद्धवैमुख्यम् not turned back, श्रमंवापि no fatigue, न उपजग्मुतुः not experienced

Just as dark clouds rain from the sky at the time of dissolution, the dreadful rain of arrows set free from the bows of both Lakshmana and Indrajith caused terrific sound. Both of them fought for long and did not turn back from the battlefield or experienced any fatigue
अस्त्राण्यस्त्रविदांश्रेष्ठौदर्शयन्तौपुनःपुनः ।।6.89.28।।

शरानुच्छावचाकारानन्तरिक्षेबबन्धतुः ।


अस्त्रविदाम् displaying their weapons, श्रेष्ठौ best warriors, पुनःपुनः again and again, अस्त्राणि weapons, दर्शयन्तौ looking at, अन्तरिक्षौ in to the sky, उच्छावचान् covering, शरान् arrows, बबन्धतुः network of arrows

Both of them, the best warriors, displaying their weapons again and again looking at the sky covered it with a network of arrows.
न्यपेतदोषमस्यन्तौलघुचित्रं च सुष्ठु च ।।6.89.29।।

उभौतुतुमुलंघोरंचक्रतुर्नरराक्षसौ ।


नरराक्षसौ human and Rakshasa, उभौ both, न्यपेतदोषम् without wasting single arrow, लघु with agility, चित्रं च wonderful, सुष्ठु च exceedingly, अस्यन्तौ one over the other, तमुलम् frightening, घोरम् dreadful, चक्रतुः

Both human and Rakshasa warriors fought an exceedingly frightening and dreadful fight over one another with agility without wasting a single arrow.
तयोःपृथक् पृथभगीमश्शुश्रुवेतलनिस्स्वनः ।।6.89.30।।

प्रकम्पयन्जनंघोरोनिर्घातइवदारुणः ।


तयोः those two, भीमः fierce, तुमुलः tumultuous, तलनिस्स्वनः sound of palms clapping, पृथक् पृथक्separately, separately, श्शुश्रुवे impact, दारुणः threatening, निर्घातःइव like violent wind, जनम् risen, प्रकम्पयन् shaken

The fierce and tumultuous impact of the sound produced by their palms (clappings) could be heard separately. It was like a violent wind that had shaken.
सतयोःभ्राजतेशब्दस्तदासमरयत्तयोः ।।6.89.31।।

सुघोरयोर्निष्टनतोर्गगनेमेघयोरिव ।


तथा that way, समरयत्तयोः both of them fighting, तयोः both, सःशब्दः that sound, सगगने sky, निष्टनतोः murmur, सुघोरयोः exceedingly frightening, मेघयोरिव like the clouds, भ्राजते was heard

When both of them were thus fighting, the exceedingly frightening sound that was heard was like the murmur of clouds.
सुवर्णपुङ्खैर्नाराचैर्बलवन्तौकृतव्रणौ ।।6.89.32।।

प्रसुस्रुवातेरुधिरंकीर्तिमन्तौजयेधृतौ ।


जये to win, धृतौ determined, कीर्तिमन्तौ glorious heroes, सुवर्णपुङ्खैः gold covered, नाराचैः iron arrows, कृतव्रणौ by the wounds, बलवन्तौ powerful, रुधिरम् blood, प्रसुस्रुवाते profusely bleeding

Glorious and powerful heroes, determined to win over each other, wounded by the gold covered iron arrows were bleeding profusely.
तेगात्रयोर्निपतितारुक्मपुङ्खाःशरायुधि ।।6.89.33।।

असृदगिग्धाविनिष्पेतुर्विविशुर्धरणीतलम् ।


युधि in battle, गात्रयोः limbs, पतिताः fallen, रुक्मपुङ्खाः gold covered arrows, तेशराः those arrows, अस्निदगिग्धाः fallen on their body, विनिष्पेतुः dropped out, धरणीतलम् into the ground, विविशुः penetrated

In the battle the gold covered arrows fell on their body, dropped out and penetrated into the earth.
अन्येसुनिशितैश्शस्त्रैराकाशेसञ्जघट्टिरे ।।6.89.34।।

बभञ्जुश्चिच्छिदुश्चैवतयोर्बाणाःसहस्रशः ।


तयोः both, अन्येबाणाः other arrows, सुनिशितैः pointed, शस्त्रै: weapons, आकाशे sky, सञ्जघट्टिरे clashed, सहस्रशः thousands, बभञ्जुः shattered, चिच्छिदुश्च tore

The other pointed arrows of both clashed with weapons in the sky in thousands, shattered and tore them.
सबभूवरणेघोरस्तयोर्बाणमयश्चयः ।।6.89.35।।

अग्निभ्यामिवदीप्ताभ्यांसत्रेकुशमयश्चयः ।


रणे in battle, तयोः both, घोरः terrific, बाणमयः with arrows, यः they सत्रे eyes, दीप्ताभ्याम् glowing, अग्निभ्याम् like fire, कुशमयः kusa grass, यः those, बभूव appeared

In the battle the terrific arrows appeared to the eyes like kusa grass spread by the sacred fire.
तयोःकृतव्रणौदेहौशुशुभातेमहात्मनोः ।।6.89.36।।

सुपुष्पाविवनिष्पत्रौवनेशाल्मलिकिंशुकौ ।


तयोः those महात्मनोः great heroes, कृतव्रणौ wounded, देहौ bodies, वने forest, सुपुष्पा blossoms, निष्पत्रौ sworn off their leaves, शाल्मलिकिंशुकौइव like Kimsuka and cotton, शुशुभाते shone

The wounded bodies of the great heroes, shone like the Kimsuka and Cotton blossoms in the forest, swore off their leaves.
चक्रतुस्तुमुलंघोरंसन्निपातंमुहुर्मुहुः ।।6.89.37।।

इन्द्रजिल्लक्ष्मणश्चैवपरस्परवधैषिणौ ।


इन्द्रजित् Indrajith, लक्ष्मणश्चैव and also Lakshmana, परस्परवधैषिणौ, मुहुर्मुहुः again and again, तुमुलम् tumultous, घोरम् dreadful, सन्निपातम् struggle, चक्रतुः carried out

Indrajith and Lakshmana again and again carried out tumultuous and dreadful struggle.
लक्ष्मणोरावणिंयुद्धेरावणिश्चापिलक्ष्मणम् ।।6.89.38।।

अन्योन्यंतावभिघ्नन्तौ न श्रमंप्रतिपद्यताम् ।


युद्धे in the battle, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, रावणिम् Indrajith, रावणिश्चापि Indrajith, लक्ष्मणंचापि Lakshmana also, तौ both, अन्योन्यम् one another, अभिघ्नन्तौ striking, श्रमम् fatigue, न प्रतिपद्यताम् not experienced

In the battle Lakshmana and Indrajith striking each other had not experienced fatigue.
बाणजालैश्शरीरस्थैरवगाढैस्तरस्विनौ ।।6.89.39।।

शुशुभातेमहावीर्यौप्ररूढाविवपर्वतौ ।


महावीर्यौ great heroes, तरस्विनौ endowed with great speed, अवगाढैः pierced, शरीरस्थैः in the body, बाणजालैः network of arrows, प्ररूढौ overgrown with trees, पर्वतौइव like mountains, शुशुभाते shone

Great heroes, endowed with speed with a network of arrows pierced on the bodies shone like mountains overgrown with trees.
तयोरुधिरसिक्तानिसम्वृतान्तिशरैर्भृशम् ।।6.89.40।।

बभ्राजुःसर्वगात्राणिज्वलन्तइवपावकाः ।


तयो Both, रुधरिसिक्तानि wetted with blood, शरैः arrows, सम्वृतानि covered, सर्वगात्राणि all over the body, ज्वलन्तः glowing, पावकाःइव fire like, भृशम् exceedingly, बभ्राजुः appeared bright

Both of them, bodies wet with blood and covered with arrows were glowing like fire and appeared bright.
तयोरथमहान् कालोव्यतीयाद्युध्यमानयोः ।।6.89.41।।

न च तौयुद्धवैमुख्यंश्रमंवाप्युपजग्मतुः ।


तयो both, रथ Ravana's son and Lakshmana, महान् long, कालो time, व्यतीयाद्युध्य fighting, अन्योः for them, तौ both, युद्धवैमुख्यं neither turned away from battle, श्रमं fatigue, वाप्युपजग्मतुः experienced

Even though both, Ravana's son, and Lakshmana, fought for a long time they neither turned away from battle or experienced fatigue.
अथसमरपरिश्रमंनिहन्तुंसमरमुखेष्वजितस्यलक्ष्मणस्य ।

प्रियहितमुपपादयन्महौत्मास्समरमुपेत्यविभीषणोऽवतस्थे ।।6.89.42।।


अथ and then, महात्मा great self, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, समरमुखेषु army chief, अजितस्य, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, समरपरिश्रमम् fatigue of battle, निहन्तुम् one who is invincible in battle, प्रियहितम् wishing welfare, उपपादयन् to relieve, समरम् battle, उपेत्य intending, अवतस्थे stood

Thereafter, Vibheeshana the great self and army chief, intending welfare of Lakshmana who was invincible in battle reached there to relieve him of his fatigue and stood.
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेएकोननवतितमस्सर्गः ।।
