[Rakshasa women lament over the death of Rakshasas in war.]

तानितानिसहस्राणिसारोहाणां च वाजिनाम् ।

रथानांत्वग्निवर्णानांसध्वजानांसहस्रशः ।।6.95.1।।

राक्षसानांसहस्राणिगदापरिघयोधिनाम् ।

काञ्चनध्वजचित्राणांशूराणांकामरूपिणाम् ।।6.95.2।।

निहतानिशरैर्दीस्तीक्ष्णैस्तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणैः ।

रावणेनप्रयुक्तानिरामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।।6.95.3।।


रावणेन by Ravana, प्रयुक्तानि yoked, सारोहाणि mounted, तानि them, तानिसहस्राणि thousands of them, वाजिनाम् horses, अग्निवर्णानम् of the colour of fire, सध्वजानाम् warriors, सहस्रशः thousands, रथानाम् chariots, गतापरिघयोधिनाम् who wage war with iron bars, काञ्चनध्वजचित्राणाम् wonderful with gold colour pictures on chariot tops, शूराणाम् arrows, कामरूपिणाम् who can change form at their will, शूराणाम् warriors, कामरूपिणाम् who can change their form at will, राक्षसानाम् Rakshasas, सहस्राणि thousands, अक्लिष्टकर्मणाम्one who will not get tired of work, रामेण of Rama, दीप्तै: glowing, तीक्ष्णै sharp:, काञ्चनभूषणैः decked with gold, शरैः arrows, हतानि put an end

"Rama who can work without getting tired put an end to thousands of Rakshasa warriors with his sharp glowing arrows decked with gold. Thousands of warriors sent by king Ravana, mounted on chariots, yoked to horses, of the colour of fire, thousands of warriors who could wage with iron bars, decked in gold, mounted on colourful chariots of golden colour pictures and Rakshasas who can change their form at will, were destroyed by Sri Rama."
दृष्टवाश्रुत्वा च सम्भ्रान्ताहतशेषानिशाचराः ।

राक्षसीश्चसमागम्यदीनाश्चिन्तापरिप्लुताः ।।6.95.4।।

विधवाहतपुत्राश्चक्रोशन्त्योहतबान्दवाः ।

राक्षस्यःसहसङ्गम्यदुःखार्ताःपर्यदेवयन् ।।6.95.5।।


हतशेषाः left over, निशाचराः night rangers, दृष्टवा seeing, श्रुत्वा hearing, सम्भ्रानातः bewildered, दीनाः piteous, चिन्तापरिप्लुताः filled with agony, राक्षसीः Rakshasas, समागम्य coming together, पर्यदेवयन् moving in groups, विधवाः widowed, हतपुत्राश्च son killed, हतबान्धवाः च kin killed, राक्षस्यः protectors, सहसङ्गम्य all associates, दुःखार्ताः stricken in grief

"On seeing and hearing of the others left over, the night rangers felt bewildered and piteous with agony coming together, moving in groups, those who lost husband, son, kin and protectors along with associates crying, stricken with grief."
कथंशूर्पणखावृद्धाकरालानिर्णतोदरी ।

आससादवनेरामंकन्दर्पमिवरूपिणम् ।।6.95.6।।


वृद्धा aged, कराला dreadful, निर्णतोदरी hideous, शूर्पणखा Surpanakha, कन्दर्पमिवरूपिणम् of like god of love, रामम् Rama, वने in the forest, कथम् how, आससाद approach

"How did that old, dreadful and hideous Surpanakha approach Rama, whose form is charming like the god of love, in the forest?"
सुकुमारंमहासत्त्वंसर्वभूतहितेरतम् ।

तंदृष्टवालोकनिन्द्यासाहीनरूपाप्रकामिता ।।6.95.7।।


लोकनिन्द्या deserves to be killed, हीनरूपा of ugly appearance, सा she, सुकुमारम् delicate, महासत्त्वम् extraordinary goodness, सर्वभूतहिते wellwisher of all beings, रतम् always, तम् him, दृष्टवा seeing, प्रकामिता stung with love

"That woman of ugly appearance deserves to be killed. How is it that she was stung with love with that delicate Rama, a well wisher of all beings?"
कथंसर्वगुणैर्हीनागुणवन्तंमहौजसम् ।

सुमुखंदुर्मुखीरामंकामयामासराक्षसी ।।6.95.8।।


सर्वगुणैः virtuous, हीना ugly, दुर्मुखी terrific appearance, राक्षसी rakshasi, गुणवन्तम् virtuous, सुमुखम् in favour, रामम् Rama, कथम् how, कामयामास dare to love

"How did that rakshasi of terrible appearance dare to love that virtuous Rama?"
जनस्यास्याल्पभाग्यत्वाद्वलिनीश्वेतमूर्धजा ।

अकार्यमपहास्यं च सर्वलोकविगर्हितम् ।।6.95.9।।

राक्षसानांविनाशायदूषणस्यखरस्य च ।

चकाराप्रतिरूपासाराघवस्यप्रधर्षणम् ।।6.95.10।।


वलिनी old and wrinkled, श्वेतमूर्धजा grey haired, अप्रतिरूपा uncouth appearance, अस्यजनस्य her own people, अल्पभाग्यत्वात् because of bad luck, राक्षसानाम् Rakshasas, दूषणस्य Dooshana's, खरस्य च Khara's, विनाशाय destruction, अकार्यम् misdeed, अपहास्यम् ridiculing, सर्वलोकविगर्हितम् condemned by the whole world, राघवस्य Raghava's, प्रधर्षणम् attacking, चकार tried

"Because of our bad luck and to the destruction of her own people, Khara and Dooshana, that old lady, with wrinkled face, grey haired (Surpanakha) Rakshasa woman tried to go and attack Raghava, a misdeed which was ridiculed and condemned by the whole world?"
तन्निमित्तमिदंवैरंरावणेनकृतंमहत् ।

वधायसीतासासीतादशग्रीवेणरक्षसा ।।6.95.11।।


तन्निमित्तम् for that reason, रावणेन by Ravana, महत् great, इदंवैरम् this enmity, कृतम् conceived, रक्षसा Rakshasa, दशग्रीवे ten headed, सासीता that Sita, वधाय borne away

"For that reason of Surpanakha, this enmity has been conceived by Ravana and Sita was borne away by the ten headed Rakshasa."
न च सीतांदशग्रीवःप्राप्नोतिजनकात्मजाम् ।

बद्धंबलवतावैरमक्षयंराघवेण च ।।6.95.12।।


दशग्रीवः tenheaded, जनकात्मजाम् janaka'sdaughter, सीताम् Sita, न च प्राप्नोति leading to, बलवता forcibly, राघवेण by Raghava, अक्षयम् undying, वैरम् enmity, बद्धम् contracted

"Hope the ten headed Ravana will not touch Sita forcibly, by which undying enmity has been contracted already."
वैदेहींप्रार्थयानंतंविराधंप्रेक्षयराक्षसम् ।

हतमेकेनरामेणपर्याप्तंतन्निदर्शनम् ।।6.95.13।।


वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, प्रार्धयानम् solicitous, एकेन one, रामेण by Rama, हतम् killed, राक्षसम् Rakshasa, विराधम् Viradha, प्रेक्षय perceiving, तत् that, निदर्शनम् proof, पर्याप्तम् sufficient

"On perceiving that Viradha solicitous of Vaidehi, the Rakshasa was killed by Rama with one arrow. That is sufficient proof (of Rama's valour)."
चतुर्धशसहस्राणिरक्षसांभीमकर्मणाम् ।

निहतानिजनस्थानेशरैरग्निशिखोपमैः ।।6.95.14।।


जनस्थाने at Janasthana, भीमकर्मणाम् of dreadful deeds, रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, चतुर्दश fourteen, सहस्राणि thousand, अग्निशिखोपमैः like peaks of fire, शरैः arrow, निहतानि destroyed

" At Janasthana fourteen thousand Rakshasas have been destroyed with his arrows like peaks of fire."
खरश्चनिहतःसङ्ख्येदूषणस्त्रिशिरास्तथा ।

शरैरादितसङ्काशैःपर्याप्तंतन्निदर्शनम् ।।6.95.15।।


सङ्ख्ये in combat, आदित्यसङ्काशैःsun like, शरैः arrows, खरश्च Khara, निहतः killed, दूषणः Dooshana, तथा so also, त्रिशिराः Trisira, तत् that, पर्याप्तम् example, निदर्शनम् sufficient proof

"Khara was killed in that combat with sunlike arrows, so also Dooshana and Trisira. That example is sufficient proof."
हतोयोजनबाहुश्चकबन्दोरुदिराशनः ।

क्रोधान्नादंनदन् सोऽथपर्याप्तंतन्निदर्शनम् ।।6.95.16।।


अथ and now, क्रोधात् enraged, नादंनदन् came roaring, योजनबाहुः with eight meters long arms, रुधिराशनः who lived on blood, सः he, कबन्धः Kabhanda, हतः killed, तत् that, पर्याप्तम् sufficient, निदर्शनम् example

"Kabhanda who lived on blood came roaring, enraged, whose arms were eight meters long was also killed and that is a sufficient example."
जघानबलिनंरामस्सहस्रनयनात्मजम् ।

वालिनंमेरुसङ्काशंपर्याप्तंतन्निदर्शनम् ।।6.95.17।।


रामः Rama, बलिनम्mighty, सहस्रनयनात्मजम् son of thousand eyed Indra, मेरुसङ्काशम् resembled mountain Meru, वालिनम् Vali, जघान killed, तत् that, पर्याप्तम् sufficient, निदर्शनम् example

"Mighty Rama killed the son of thousand eyed Indra, Vali, who resembled mountain Meru. That example is sufficient proof."
ऋष्यमूकेवसंश्चैवदीनोभग्नमनोरथः ।

सुग्रीवःप्रापितोराज्यंपर्याप्तंतन्निदर्शनम् ।।6.95.18।।


ऋष्यमूके Rishyamukha, वसन् living, दीनःdejected, भग्नमनोरथः disconsolate, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, राज्यम् kingdom, प्रापितः restored, तत् his, पर्याप्तम् sufficient, निदर्शनम् example

"Sugriva, who was living on Rishyamukha, dejected and disconsolate was restored with his kingdom. That is sufficient."
धर्मार्थसहितंवाक्यंसर्वेषांरक्षसांहितम् ।

युक्तंविभीषणेनोक्तंमोहत्तस्य न रोचते ।।6.95.19।।


धर्मार्थसहितम् in accordance with righteousness, सर्वेषाम् all, रक्षसाम् Rakshasa, हितम् good, युक्तम् appropriate, विभीषणेन by Vibheeshana, उक्तम् spoken, वाक्यम् words, मोहात् in delusion, तस्य his, न रोचते not like d

"Good advice given by Vibheeshana in accordance with righteousness was not liked by him in delusion."
विभीषणवचःकुर्याद्यदिस्मधनदानुजः ।

श्मशानभूतादुःखार्तानेयंलङ्काभविष्यति ।।6.95.20।।


धनदानुजः younger brother of Kubera, विभीषणवचः Vibheeshana's words, कुर्यात् स्मयदि had followed, इयम् this, लङ्का Lanka, श्मशानभूता crematorium, दुःखार्ता stricken with grief, न भविष्यति would not have become

"Had Ravana, the younger brother of Kubera followed the advice of Vibheeshana, this Lanka would not have been stricken with grief and turned into a crematorium."
कुम्भकर्णंहतंश्रुत्वाराघवेणमहाबलम् ।

अतिकायं च दुर्मर्षंलक्ष्मणेनहतंतदा ।।6.95.21।।

प्रियंचेन्द्रजितंपुत्रंरावणोनावबुध्यते ।


तदा then, महाबलम् endowed with extraordinary strength, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, राघवेण by Raghava, हतम् killed, श्रुत्वा hearing, दुर्मर्षम् difficult to disregard, अतिकायम् Atikaya, प्रियंपुत्रम् dear son, इन्द्रजितम् Indrajith also, लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, हतम् killed, रावणः Ravana, नावबुध्यते not realised.

"Kumbhakarna of extraordinary strength having been killed by Raghava, and even on hearing that Atikaya who is difficult to disregard, and Indrajith, dear son killed by Lakshmana also, Ravana has not realised."
ममपुत्रोममभ्राताममभर्तारणेहतः ।।6.95.22।।

इत्येषश्रूयतेशब्दोराक्षसीनांकुलेकुले ।


मम my, पुत्रः son, रणे in combat, हतः killed, मम my, भ्राता brother, मम my, भर्ता husband, इति thus, एषः those, राक्षसीनाम् Rakshasa women, शब्धः sound, कुलेकुले in every family, श्रूयते was heard

"My son is killed, my brother is killed, my husband is killed," was the sound heard from every family.
रथश्चाश्वाश्चनागाश्चहताःशतसहस्रशः ।।6.95.23।।

रणेरामेणशूरेणहताश्चापिपदातयः ।


शूरेणwarriors, रामेण by Rama, रणे in war, रथाश्च chariots also, अश्वाश्च horses also, नागाश्च elephants, शतसहस्रशः hundreds and thousands, हताः killed, पदातयाश्चापि even foot soldiers, हताःkilled

"Horses, elephants, warriors, even foot soldiers were killed, chariots were destroyed, and hundreds and thousands struck down in war by Rama."
रुद्रोवायदिवाविष्णुर्महेन्द्रोवाशतक्रतुः ।।6.95.24।।

हन्तिनोरामरूपेणयदिवास्वयमन्तकः ।


रुद्रोवा by Rudra, यदिवा is it, विष्णुः Lord Vishnu, शतक्रतुः who has done a hundred sacrifices, महेन्द्रोवा by Mahendra, यदिवा is it, स्वयम् himself, अन्तकः god of death, रामरूपेण in the form of Rama, नः is it, हन्ति killing

"Is it Rudra, or Lord Vishnu, or Indra, who has done hundred sacrifices in the past or is it that the god of death itself has taken the form of Rama and killed him?"
हतप्रवीरारामेणनिराशाजीवितेवयम् ।।6.95.25।।

अपश्य्नत्योभयस्यान्तमनाथाविलपामहे ।


रामेण by Rama, हतप्रवीराः eminent heroes, वयम् we, जीविते life, निराशाः lost, भयस्य with fear, अन्तम् end, अपश्यन्तः not able to see, अनाथाः orphans, विलपामहे weeping

"Eminent heroes killed by Rama, hopes of life lost, not able to see the end of fear, we are like orphans weeping."
रामहस्ताद्धशग्रीवश्शूरोदत्तमहावरः ।।6.95.26।।

इदंभयंमहाघोरंसमुत्पन्नं न बुध्यते ।


शूरः arrows, दत्तमहावरः graced with boon, दशग्रीवः tenheaded, रामहस्तात् from the hand s of Rama, समुत्पन्नम् that appalling danger, इदम् this way, महाघोरम् most dreadful, भयम् fear, न बुध्यते not realised

"Graced with the boon of arrows the tenheaded Ravana has not realised the appalling danger to him from Rama."
तं न देवा न गन्धर्वा न पिशाचा न राक्षसाः ।।6.95.27।।

उपसृष्टंपरित्रातुंशक्तारामेणसम्युगे ।


रामेण by Rama, सम्युगे in war, उपसृष्टम् attacked तम् him, त्रातुम् to protect, देवाः gods, न शक्ताः not possible, गन्धर्वाः Gandharvas, न not, पिशाचाः fiends, न not, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, न not

"Neither gods nor Gandharvas, not even fiends will be able to protect, struck by Rama in war."
त्पताश्चापिदृश्यन्तेरावणस्यरणेरणे ।।6.95.28।।

कथयन्तिहिरामेणरावणस्यनिबर्हणम् ।


रावणस्य Ravana's, रणेरणे in every war, उत्पाताश्चापि are rising up, दृश्यन्ते seen, रामेण by Rama, रावणस्य Ravana's, निबर्हणम् destroying, कथयन्ति हि how much more to say

"In every war evil portents are noticed rising up, of Rama destroying Ravana. How much more to say?"
पितामहेनप्रीतेनदेवदानवराक्षसैः ।।6.95.29।।

रावणस्याभयंदत्तंमनुष्येभ्यो न याचितम् ।


प्रीतेन lovingly, पितामहेन by Brahma, रावणस्य Ravana's, देवदानवराक्षसैः Devas Danavas and Rakshasas, अभयम् protection, दत्तम् provided, मनुष्येभ्यःfrom humans, न याचितम् not sought

"Brahma has lovingly provided protection to Ravana from Devas, Danavas and Rakshasas. He did not seek protection from humans."
तदिदंमानुषंमन्येप्राप्तंनिःसंशयंभयम् ।।6.95.30।।

जीवितान्तकंघोरंरक्षसांरावणस्य च ।


रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, रावणस्य च Ravana's, जीवितान्तकरम् fearlessness of death, घोरम् terrific, मानुषम् human beings, तत् that, इदम् this way, भयम् fear, प्राप्तम् attained, मन्ये think, निःसंशयम् no doubt

"Fearlessness of death from human beings attained by Ravana in this way was no doubt terrific to Rakshasas and Ravana."
पीड्यमानास्तुबलिनावरदानेनरक्षसा ।।6.95.31।।

दीप्स्सैस्तपोभिर्विबुधाःपितामहमपूजयन् ।


वरदानेन by the boon, बलिना mighty, रक्षसा Rakshasa, पीड्यमानाः tormented, विबुधाः learned, दीप्स्सैः intense, तपोभिः austerities also, पितामहम् Brahma, अपूजयन् worshipped

"Tormented by the oppression of Ravana, on account of the boon (given to him by the creator) and intensity of his austerities, the learned worshipped Brahma."
देवतानांहितार्थायमहात्मावैपितामहः ।।6.95.32।।

उवाचदेवताःसर्वाइदंतुष्टोमहद्वचः ।


तुष्टः gratified, महात्मा great self, पितामहः Brahma, देवतानाम् to Devatas, हितार्थाय wishing good, सर्वाःall, देवताः Devatas, इदम् thus, महत् great, वचःwords, उवाच spoke

"Gratified by the worship of Devatas, wishing them good, Brahma spoke these words."
अद्यप्रभृतिलोकांस्त्रीन् सर्वेदानवराक्षसाः ।।6.95.33।।

भयेनप्रावृतानित्यंविचरिष्यन्तिशाश्वतम् ।


अद्यप्रभृति from now, सर्वे all, दानवराक्षसाःDanavas and Rakshasas, नित्यम् every day, भयेन in fear, प्रावृताः range, शाश्वतम् permanently, त्रीन् three, लोकान् worlds, विचरिष्यन्ति will wander

"From now ,all Danavas and Rakshasas will range the three worlds every day permanently in fear."
दैवतैस्तुसमागम्यसर्वैश्चेन्द्रपुरोगमैः ।।6.95.34।।

वृषध्वजस्त्रिपुरहामहादेवःप्रसादितः ।


इन्द्रपुरोगमैः marching towards Indra, सर्वैः all, दैवतैः Devatas, समागम्य getting together, वृषध्वजः device of bull, त्रिपुरहा Tripura, महादेवः Lord MahaDeva, प्रसादितःpropitiated

"Getting together all the Devatas marched towards Indra and propitiated Lord MahaDeva, destroyer of Tripura, who Bears the sign of bull on his abode."
प्रसन्नस्तुमहादेवोदेवानेतद्वचोऽब्रवीत् ।।6.95.35।।

उत्पत्स्यतिहितार्थंवोनारीरक्षःक्षयावहा ।


प्रसन्नः pleased, महादेवः MahaDeva, देवान् Devatas, एतत् this, वचः words, अब्रवीत् spoke, वःfor, हितार्थम् their benefit, रक्षःक्षयावहा for destruction of Rakshasas, नारी woman, उत्पत्स्यति will be born

MahaDeva was pleased by the Devatas and spoke these words for their benefit," a woman will be born for the destruction of Rakshasas."
एषादेवैःप्रयुक्तातुक्षुद्यथादानवान् पुरा ।।6.95.36।।

भक्षयिष्यतिनःसीताराक्षसघ्नीसरावणान् ।


पुरा earlier, क्षुत् hunger, दानवान् यथा Danavas also, देवैः Devatas, प्रयुक्ताः instigated, राक्षसघ्नी Rakshasas, एषासीता Sita, सरावणान् that Ravana, नः also, भक्षयिष्यति will consume

"Just as hunger consumed Danavas earlier, this woman, instigated (by Devatas) will consume all Rakshasas and Ravana."
रावणस्यापनीतेनदुर्विनीतस्यदुर्मतेः ।।6.95.37।।

अयंनिष्टानकोघोरंशोकेनसमभिप्लुतः ।


दुर्विनीतस्य misconduct, दुर्मतेः evil minded, रावणस्य Ravana's, अपनीतेन immoral action, शोकेन in grief, समभिप्लुतः attended by, घोरः terrific, अयम् us, निष्टानकः stares at us

"Because of the misconduct of the evilminded Ravana's immoral action, terrific destruction attended by grief stares at us."
तंन पश्यामहेलोकेयोनःशरणदोभवेत् ।।6.95.38।।

राघवेणोपसृष्टानां कालेनेव युगक्षये ।


युगक्षये at the time of destruction of the world, कालेनtime spirit, उपसृष्टानाम् इव threatened like this, राघवेण by Raghava, नः not, लोके in this world, यःwho, शरणदः can protect, भवेत् us, तम् him, न पश्यामहे not able to perceive

"Threatened like this by Raghava, we cannot perceive anyone in this world who can protect us now. Just as beings are threatened by the time spirit at the end of the destruction of this world, we are threatened."
नास्तिनःशरणंकश्चिद्भयेमहतितिष्ठताम् ।।6.95.39।।

दावाग्निवेष्टितानांहिकरेणूनांयथावने ।


वने in the forest, दावाग्निवेष्टितानाम् like wild fire, करेणूनांयथा like female elephants, महति huge, भये fear, तिष्ठताम् stays, नः none, शरणम् to protect, कश्चित् indeed, नास्ति not there

"Indeed, there is no protection for us here to stay, as we are like the female elephants in the forest covered by huge wildfire."
प्राप्तकालंकृतंतेनपौलस्त्येनमहात्मना ।।6.95.40।।

यतएवंभयंदृष्टंतमेवशरणंगतः ।


महात्मना great self, तेनपौलस्त्येन by that Paulastya, प्राप्तकालम् opportune time having come, कृतम् did, यतः that which, एवम् in that way, भयम् fear, दृष्टम् perceiving, तमेव he also, शरणंगतः sought refuge

"Great Vibheeshana of the Paulastya race, perceiving opportune time, has sought refuge out of fear."
इतीवसर्वारजनीचरस्त्रियःपरस्परंसम्परिरभ्यबाहुभिः ।

विषेदुरार्तातिभयाभिपीडिताविनेदुरुच्चैश्चतदासुदारुणम् ।।6.95.41।।


तदा then, सर्वाः all, रजनीचरस्त्रियः night rangers, परस्परम् one another, बाहुभिः many, सम्परिरभ्य holding, आर्ताःcried, अतिभयाभिपीडिताः tormented by great fear, इतीव this way, विषेदुः despondent, सुदारुणम् frightfully, उच्चैः with loud noise, विनेदुश्च sound

All the night rangers tormented by fear, holding one another, many of them cried aloud making loud noises, in a frightful manner out of despondency.
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेपञ्चनवतितमस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the ninety fifth sarga of the Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
