[Sugriva kills Ravana's minister, Virupaksha in the combat. Destruction of Ravana's army.]

तथातैःकृत्तगात्रैस्तुदशग्रीवेणमार्गणैः ।

बभूववसुधातत्रप्रकीर्णाहरिभिस्तदा ।।6.97.1।।


दशग्रीवेण by Ravana, तथा that way, मार्गणैः on the way, तदा then, कृत्तगात्रैः limbs severed, तैः those, हरिभिः Vanaras, तत्र there, वसुधा on the ground, प्रकीर्णा strewn बभूव witnessed

That time the battlefield was strewn with bodies of Vanaras whose limbs had been severed by the arrows of Ravana.
रावणस्याप्रसह्यंतंशरसम्पातमेकतः ।

न शेकुस्सहितुंदीप्तंपतङ्गाज्वलनंयथा ।।6.97.2।।


एकतः for an instant, रावणस्य Ravana's, अप्रसह्यम्, तम् them, शरसम्पातम् hail of arrows, दीप्तम् glowing, ज्वलनम् blazing, पतङ्गाःयथा like the moths, सहितुम् to bear, न शेकुः not possible

Just as moths cannot bear the blazing fire, the Vanaras could not bear the glowing hail of Ravana's arrows even for an instant.
तेऽर्दितानिशितैर्बाणैःक्रोशन्तोविप्रदुद्रुवुः ।

पावकार्चिस्समाविष्टादह्यमानायथागजाः ।।6.97.3।।


निशितैsharp, बाणैः arrows, अर्दिताः tormented, ते they, पावकार्चिःसमाविष्टाः enveloped in flames, दह्यमानाः burning, गजाःयथा like the elephants, क्रोशन्तः scorched, विप्रदुद्रुवु fled screaming,

Tormented by sharp arrows, the scorched Vanaras fled screaming like elephants enveloped in flames.
प्लवङ्गनामनीकानिमहाभ्राणीवमारुतः ।

सययौसमरेतस्मिन्विधमन्रावणश्शरैः ।।6.97.4।।


तस्मिन् in that time, समरे in the battle, रावणः Ravana's, शरैः arrows, महाभ्राणि huge clouds, मारुतःइव like wind, प्लवङ्गमानाम् leaping, अनीकानि many, विधमन् dissipate, संययौ went in the battlefield

At that time, driven by Ravana's arrows, the Vanaras fled from the battlefield just like huge clouds are dissipated by wind.
कदनंतरसाकृत्वाराक्षसेन्ध्रोवनौकसाम् ।

आससादततोत्वरितंयुद्धेराघवंस्तदा ।।6.97.5।।


राक्षसेन्द्रः Rakshasa king, युद्धे in war, वनौकसाम् forest rangers, कदनम् in the battlefield, तरसा hurriedly, कृत्वा went, ततः thereafter, तदा then, त्वरितम् swiftly, राघवम् Raghava, आससाद approached

The Rakshasa king, having destroyed the forest rangers, thereafter, went to Raghava hurriedly.
सुग्रीवस्तान्कपीन्दृष्टवाभग्नान्विद्रावितान्रणे ।

गुल्मेसुषेणंनिक्षिप्यचक्रेयुद्धेऽद्भुतंमनः ।।6.97.6।।


सुग्रीवः, Sugriva रणे in war, भग्नान् broken, विद्रवतान् defeated, तान् कपीन् those monkeys, दृष्टवा seeing, सुषेणम् Sushena, गुल्मे for protection, निक्षिप्य having assigned, अद्भुतम् wonderful, मनः mind, युद्धे to the battle, चक्रे went

Seeing the defeated and broken monkeys, Sugriva assigned Sushena for their protection and went to the battle making others wonder at his wonderful action.
आत्मनस्सदृशंवीरस्सतंनिक्षिप्यवानरम् ।

सुग्रीवोऽऽभिमुखश्शत्रुंप्रतस्थेपादपायुधः ।।6.97.7।।


सःसुग्रीवः that Sugriva, आत्मनः himself, सदृशम् for the protection, वीरम् hero, तंवानरम् of the Vanaras, निक्षिप्य uprooting, पादपायुधः tree as weapon, शत्रुम् at the enemy, प्रतस्थेwent, अभिमुख towards

Sugriva, being a hero himself, uprooting a tree as a weapon, went towards the enemy after having assigned Sushena the responsibility of protection of Vanaras.
पार्श्वतःपृष्ठतश्चास्यसर्वेयूथाधिपास्स्वयम् ।

अनुजह्रुर्महाशैलान् विविधांश्चमहाद्रुमान् ।।6.97.8।।


सर्वे all, यूथाधिपाःleaders of army, स्वयम् themselves, अस्य their, पार्श्वतः side, पृष्ठतश्च seizing, महाशैलान् huge mountains, विविधान् many, वनस्पतींश्च also trees, अनुजह्रुfollowed

All the leaders of the army themselves seizing hold of huge mountains and trees of several kinds followed his side.
सनदन्युधिसुग्रीवस्स्वरेणमहतामहान् ।

पातयन्विविधांश्चान्यान्ञ्जगामोत्तमराक्षसान् ।।6.97.9।।


महान् great, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, युधि in war, महता huge, स्वरेणtone, सनदन् roared, विविधान् several, अन्यान् others, पोथयन् destroying, उत्तमराक्षसान् best of Rakshasas, ममन्थ towards

Great Sugriva roaring at high pitch in war destroyed several other Rakshasas and went towards the best of Rakshasas.
ममन्थ च महाकायान्राक्षसान्वानरेश्वरः ।

युगान्तसमयेवायुःप्रवृद्धानगमानिव ।।6.97.10।।


महाकायः of gigantic body, वानरेश्वरःVanara Lord, युगास्तसमये at the end of the universe, वायुःwind, प्रवृद्धान् huge, अगमानिव like the wind moving tortuously, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, ममन्थच destroyed

The Vanara Lord of gigantic body, moving like the wind, tortuously destroyed the Rakshasas like a huge wind destroying the universe.
राक्षसानामनीकेषुशैलवर्षंववर्ष ह ।

अश्मवर्षंयथामेघःपक्षिसङ्घेषुकानने ।।6.97.11।।


मेघः clouds, कानने in the forest, पक्षिसङ्घेषु flocks of birds, अश्मवर्षंयथा hail stones, राक्षसानाम् on Rakshasas, अनीकेषुon Rakshasas, शैलवर्षम् shower of rocks, ववर्ष rained

Just as clouds shower hail stones on flocks of birds in the forest, Sugriva rained showers of rocks on the Rakshasas.
कपिराजविमुक्तैस्तैश्शैलवर्षैस्तुराक्षसाः ।

विकीर्णशिरसःपेतुर्निकृत्ताइवपर्वताः ।।6.97.12।।


राक्षसाः Rakshasas, कपिराजविमुक्तै: hit by Vanara king's rocks, तैः they, विकीर्णशिरसः broken heads, विकृत्ताःmutilated, पर्वताः mountains, पेतुःfallen

Hit by the rocks rained by the Vanara king, the Rakshasas with heads broken and body mutilated had fallen like mountains.
अथसंक्षीयमाणेषुराक्षसेषुसमन्ततः ।

सुग्रीवेणप्रभग्नेषुपतत्सुनिनदत्सु च ।।6.97.13।।

विरूपाक्षस्स्वकंनामधन्वीविश्राव्यराक्षसः ।

रथादाप्लुत्यदुर्धर्षोगजस्कन्धमुपारुहत् ।।6.97.14।।


अथ and thereafter, सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, प्रभग्नेषु shattered, राक्षसेषु all the Rakshasas, समन्ततःall over, संक्षीयमाणेषु tormented, पतत्सुfallen, निनदत्सु च shouting, धन्वी holding bow, दुर्धर्षःdifficult to overcome, राक्षसः Rakshasa, विरूपाक्षःVirupaksha, स्वम् himself, नाम name, विश्राव्य announcing, रथात् from chariot, आप्लुत्य jumped, गजस्कन्धम् on to an elephant in rut, उपारुहत् seated

And thereafter, all the Rakshasas shattered by Sugriva, tormented, fallen on the ground were shouting. Seeing that Virupaksha, himself, who is difficult to encounter, holding his bow, announcing his name, jumped from the chariot onto an elephant in a rut.
स तंद्विरदमारुह्यविरूपाक्षोमहारथः ।

वनर्दभनीमनिर्ह्रादंवानरानभ्यधावत ।।6.97.15।।


महारथः great charioteer, सःविरूपाक्षः that Virupaksha, तंद्विरदमा elephant, आरुह्य ascending, अथ then, भीमनिर्ह्रादम् frightening like lion, ननर्द roared, वानरान् Vanaras, अभ्यधावत rushed towards

That great charioteer Virupaksha ascended the elephant, frightening like a lion, and rushed towards Vanaras roaring.
सुग्रीवे स शरान्घोरान्विससर्जचमूमुखे ।

स्थापयामासचोद्विग्नान्राक्षसान् सम्प्रहर्षयन् ।।6.97.16।।


चमूमुखे at the army, सुग्रीवे at Sugriva, घोरान् dreadful, शरान् arrows, विससर्ज released, उद्विग्नान् pierced, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, सम्प्रहर्षयन् made them happy, स्थापयामास relieving from fear

Releasing arrows at the army of Vanaras and Sugriva, he (Virupaksha) pierced arrows and relieved the Rakshasas of fear and made them happy.
सतुविद्धश्शितैर्बाणैःकपीन्द्रस्तेनरक्षसा ।

चुक्रोध स महाक्रोधोवधेचास्यमनोदधे ।।6.97.17।।


तेन by that, रक्षसा Rakshasas, शितैः sharp, बाणैः shafts, अतिविद्धःpained, सःकपीन्द्रः that king of Vanaras, चुक्रोश roared, महाक्रोधः very furious, अस्य his, वधे killing, मनः mind, दधे set in mind

The king of Vanaras, pained by the shafts of Rakshasa, roared, and became very furious. He set in his mind to kill the Rakshasa.
ततःपादपमुद्धृत्यशूरस्सम्प्रधनोहरिः ।

अभिपत्यजघानास्यप्रमुखेतुमहागजम् ।।6.97.18।।


ततः then, सम्प्रधनः springing up, शूरः valiant, हरिःVanara, पादपम् trees, उद्धृत्य uprooting, अस्य his, तु also, महागजम् on the great elephant, अभिपत्य struck, प्रमुखे at face, जघान struck

Then springing up, the valiant Vanara uprooting a tree struck the face of the Rakshasa seated on the great elephant.
स तुप्रहाराभिहतस्सुग्रीवेणमहागजः ।

अपासर्पद्धनुर्मात्रंनिषसादननाद च ।।6.97.19।।


सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, प्रहाराभिहतः overwhelmed with blow, सः that, महागजः great elephant, धनुर्मात्रम् distance of four cubits, पासर्पत् retreated, निषसाद distressed, ननाद च and roared

Overwhelmed by the blow of Sugriva, that great elephant retreated four cubits, distressed, and roared.
गजात्तुमथितात्तूर्णमपक्रम्य स वीर्यवान् ।

राक्षसोऽऽभिमुखश्शत्रुंप्रत्युद्गम्यततःकपिम् ।।6.97.20।।

आर्षभंचर्मखडगं च प्रगृह्यलघुविक्रमः ।

भर्त्सयन्निवसुग्रीवमाससादव्यवस्थितम् ।।6.97.21।।


ततः then, सः that, वीर्यवान् valiant hero, राक्षसः Rakshasa, मथितात् wounded, गजात् elephant, तूर्णम् quickly, अपक्रम्य getting down, अभिमुखःfacing, शत्रुम् the enemy, कपिम् monkey, प्रत्युद्गम्यin return, आर्षभम् made of bull's, चर्म hide, खडगं च and sword, प्रगृह्य seizing, लघुविक्रमःpowerful, व्यवस्थितम् firmly seated, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, भर्त्सयन्निव as if threatening, आससाद went towards

That valiant Rakshasa hero jumped down quickly from the wounded elephant, seizing hold of a shield made of bull's hide and a sword, advancing towards the enemy who stood firmly, and facing him, as if threatening him.
स हितस्याभिसङ्कृद्धःप्रगृह्यविपुलांशिलाम् ।

विरूपाक्षायचिक्षेपसुग्रीवोजलदोपमाम् ।।6.97.22।।


सःसुग्रीवः that Sugriva, तस्य his, अभिसङ्कृद्धः very angry, विपुलाम् huge, जलदोपमाम् like a cloud, शिलाम् rock, प्रगृह्य holding, विरूपाक्षाय at Virupaksha, चिक्षेप hurled

Holding a huge rock which was like a mass of clouds, Sugriva, who was very angry, hurled at Virupaksha.
स तांशिलामापतन्तींदृष्टवाराक्षसपुङ्गवः ।

अपक्रम्यसुविक्रान्तःखडगेनप्राहरत्तदा ।।6.97.23।।


तदा then, सुविक्रान्तः exceedingly powerful, सःराक्षसपुङ्गवः that Rakshasa leader, आपतन्तीम् falling, तांशिलाम् that rock, दृष्टवा seeing, अपक्रम्य jumping, खडगेन with sword, प्राहरत् struck

Then that exceedingly powerful Rakshasa leader, seeing the rock falling, struck it with a sword, jumping.
तेनखडगप्रहारेणरक्षसाबलिनाहतः ।

मुहूर्तमभवद्वीरोविसंज्ञइववानरः ।।6.97.24।।


बलिना mighty, तेन by that, रक्षसा Rakshasa, खडगप्रहारेण struck with a sword, हतः wounded, वानरःVanara, मुहूर्तम् in a short while, वीरः heroic, विसंज्ञःइवunconscious, अभवत् became

Struck by the mighty Rakshasa with a sword, the Vanara leader, a heroic one, got wounded, and became unconscious for a while.
स तदा स हसोत्पत्यराक्षसस्यमहाहवे ।

मुष्टिंसन्वर्त्यवेगेनपातयामासवक्षसि ।।6.97.25।।


सः he, तदा then, महाहवे great war, सहसा at once, उत्पत्य getting up, मुष्टिम् with fist, सन्वर्त्य whirling, वेगेन violently, राक्षसस्य Rakshasa's, वक्षसि on the chest, पातमायास hit

Then in that great war, Sugriva getting up at once whirling his fist, hit (Virupaksha) him on the chest.
मुष्टिप्रहाराभिहतोविरूपाक्षोनिशाचरः ।

तेनखडगेनसङ्कृद्दस्सुग्रीवस्यचमूमुखे ।।6.97.26।।

कवचंपातयामासपद्भ्यामभिहतोऽऽपतत् ।


मुष्टिप्रहाराभिहतः hit by the fist, निशाचरःnight ranger, विरूपाक्षःVirupaksha, सङ्कृद्धः very angry, तेनखडगेन by the sword, चमूमुखे forefront, सुग्रीवस्यSugriva's, कवचम् shield, पातयामास fell down, अभिहतः wounded severely, पद्भ्याम् both feet, अपतत् fallen

Hit by the fist, Virupaksha became very angry and tore the armor of Sugriva by his sword in the forefront of the army. Wounded severely, Sugriva fell on his feet.
स समुत्थायपतितःकपिस्तस्यव्यसर्जयत् ।

तलप्रहारमशनेस्समानंभीमनिस्स्वनम् ।।6.97.27।।


पतितः dropped, सःकपिः that monkey, समुत्थायgetting up, अशनेःthunderbolt, समानम् equal to, तलप्रहारम् slapped with palm, भीमनिःस्वनम् terrific sound, तस्य his, व्यसर्जयत् crash

Dropped down by him (Virupaksha), Sugriva, got up, and gave the Rakshasa a slap with his palm which was equal to thunderbolt that produced a terrific sound like crash.
तलप्रहारंतद्रक्षस्सुग्रीवेणसमुद्यतम् ।

नैपुण्यान्मोचयित्वैनंमुष्टिनोरस्यताडयत् ।।6.97.28।।


तत् then, रक्षः Rakshasa, सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, समुद्यतम्great effort, तलप्रहारम् slap by the palm, नैपुण्यात् with skill, मोचयित्वा hit, एनम् in that way, मुष्टिना fist, उरसि chest, अताडयत् hit

Virupaksha, escaping the slap of Sugriva with great skill, hit him (Sugriva) on the chest with his fist.
तस्सुसङ्कृद्धतरःसुग्रीवोवानरेश्वरः ।।6.97.29।।

मोक्षितंचात्मनोदृष्टवाप्रहारंतेनरक्षसा ।


ततः then, वानरेश्वरः king of forest, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, आत्मनः himself, प्रहारम् hit him, तेनरक्षसा by that Rakshasa, मोक्षितम् forehead, दृष्टवा seeing, सङ्कृद्धतरः in anger to strike

Then Sugriva, the king of the forest, grew angry and hit the Rakshasa on the forehead.
ददर्शान्तरंतस्यविरूपाक्षस्यवानरः ।।6.97.30।।

ततोन्यपातयत्क्रोधाच्छङ्खदेशेमहात्तलम् ।


सःवानरः that Vanara, तस्यविरूपाक्षस्य that Virupaksha's, अन्तरम् blow, ददर्श seeing, ततः thereafter, क्रोधात् angered, अन्यत् other, महात्तलम् big palm, शङ्खदेशे on the temporal bone, पातयत् fell

The Vanara, seeing the blow given by Virupaksha, enraged Sugriva hit him with another palm on the temporal bone by which he fell.
महेन्द्राशनिकल्पेनतलेनाभिहतःक्षितौ ।।6.97.31।।

पपातरुधिरक्लिन्नश्शोणितंसमुद्यमन् ।

स्रोतोभ्यस्तुविरूपाक्षोजलंप्रस्रवणादिव ।।6.97.32।।


महेन्द्राशनिकल्पेन resembling Indra's weapon, तलेन by that palm, अभिहतः hurt, विरूपाक्षःVirupaksha, प्रस्रवणात् flowing from water falls, जलमिव like water, स्रोतोभ्यः from the body, बहु much, शोणितम् blood, समुगदिरन् vomiting, रुधिरक्लिन्नःbathed in blood, क्षितौ on the ground, पपात fell

Hurt by the palm which resembled Indra's weapon, blood started flowing from Virupaksha's body just like water flowed from waterfalls. Bathed in blood, vomiting blood, Virupaksha fell on the ground.
विवृत्तनयनंक्रोधात्सफेनंरुधिराप्लुतम् ।

ददृशुस्तेविरूपाक्षंविरूपाक्षतरंकृतम् ।।6.97.33।।


ते thus, क्रोधात् in anger, विवृत्तनयनम् turning the eyeballs, सफेनम् two nostrils, रुधिराप्लुतम् foaming blood, विरूपाक्षतरम् Virupaksha who had misshapen eyes, कृतम् done, विरूपाक्षम् Virupaksha, ददृशुः witnessed

The Vanaras witnessed Virupaksha who had misshapen eyes, turning his eyeballs in anger, foaming blood flowing from nostrils.
स्फुरन्तंपरिवर्तन्तंपार्श्वेनरुधिरोक्षितम् ।

करुणं च विनर्दन्तंददृशुःकपयोरिपुम् ।।6.97.34।।


कपयः monkeys, स्फुरन्तम् rolling by, पार्श्वेन sides, परिवर्तनम् changing sides, रुधिरोक्षितम् bathed in blood, करुणम् compassion, विनर्दन्तम् causing sorrow, रिपुम् enemy, ददृशुः witnessed,

Virupaksha rolled, by changing sides bathed in blood, causing sorrow and compassion to Vanaras who witnessed.
तथातुतौसंम्यतिसम्प्रयुक्तौ ।

तरस्विनौवानरराक्षसानाम् ।।6.97.35।।


तथा thus, सम्यति close to each other, सम्प्रयुक्तौ both redoubtable, तरस्विनौ both powerful, भीमौ terrific, वानरराक्षसानाम् Vanaras and Rakshasas, बलार्णवौ mighty, भिन्नसेतू, द्वौ both, महार्णवौ इव like great ocean, सस्वनतुश्च roared as if busted

Thus, both close to each other, both redoubtable armies, of Vanaras and Rakshasas, both powerful and terrific, both mighty, roared as if the great ocean had burst.
विनाशितंप्रेक्ष्यविरूपनेत्रंमहाबलंतंहरिपार्थिवेन ।

बलंसमस्तंकपिराक्षसानामुन्मत्तगङ्गाप्रतिमंबभूव ।।6.97.36।।


हरिपार्थिवेन Vanaras looking at Virupaksha, विनाशितम् destroyed, तम् him, महाबलम् most powerful, विरूपनेत्रम् Virupaksha, प्रेक्ष्य looking at, समस्तम् everything, कपिराक्षसानाम् monkeys and Rakshasas, बलम् army, उन्मत्तगङ्गाप्रतिमम् mad like Ganga in space, बभूव seemed

Looking at the most powerful Virupaksha destroyed by Sugriva, the Vanaras were happy and the Rakshasa army in sorrow seemed mad like Ganga in space.
