[Major conflict between Sugriva and Mahodara, minister of Ravana. Death of Mahodara in the hands of Sugriva.]

हन्यमानेबलेतूर्णमन्योन्यंतेमहामृथे ।

सरसीवमहाघर्मेसोपक्षीणेबभूवतुः ।।6.98.1।।


महामृथे in the major conflict, अन्योन्यम् one another, हन्यमाने destroying, बले army, महाघर्मे midsummer, सरसीव lakes, तूर्णम् totally, सोपक्षीणे water goes down, बभूवतुः seemed

In the major conflict, each one destroying the other army, it seemed like the midsummer lakes totally lost its water.
स्वबलस्यविघातेनविरूपाक्ष्वधेन च ।

बभूवद्विगुणंक्रुद्धोरावणोराक्षसाधिपः ।।6.98.2।।


राक्षसाधिपः Lord of Rakshasas, रावणः Ravana, स्वबलस्य his army, घातेन destruction, विरूपाक्ष्वधेन च fall of Virupaksha, द्विगुणम् doubly, क्रुद्धः angry, बभूव became

The Lord of Rakshasas, Ravana, became doubly angry by the destruction of his army and fall of Virupaksha.
प्रक्षीणंतुबलंदृष्टवावध्यमानंवलीमुखैः ।

बभूवास्यव्यथायुद्धेप्रेक्ष्यदैवविपर्ययम् ।।6.98.3।।


युद्धे in war, वलीमुखैः by the Vanaras, वध्यमानम् killed, प्रक्षीणम् highly reduced, तुबलम् army, प्रेक्ष्य seeing, दैवविपर्ययम् adversary of god's grace, दृष्टवा witnessing, अस्य his, व्यथा agony, बभूव experienced

Rakshasa's army was killed by Vanaras and drastically reduced. Seeing the adversary of God's grace, Ravana was agonized on witnessing it.
उवाच च समीपस्थंमहोदरमरिन्दमम् ।

अस्मिन्कालेमहाबाहोजयाशात्वयिमेस्थिता ।।6.98.4।।


समीपस्थम् close by, अरिन्दमम् difficult to encounter, महोदरम् Mahodara, उवाच spoke, महाबाहो mighty armed, अस्मिन् his, काले at this time, मे for me, जयाशा hope of victory, त्वयि you are, स्थिता in you

And then Ravana spoke to Mahodara who was close by, one who is difficult to encounter, saying " At this time the hope for my victory is centered in you."
जहिशत्रुचमूंवीरदर्शयाद्यपराक्रमम् ।

भर्तृपिण्डस्यकालोऽऽयंनिर्देष्टुंसाधुयुध्यताम् ।।6.98.5।।


वीर heroic, शत्रुचमूच् enemy army, जहि total destruction, अद्य today, पराक्रमम् valour, दर्शय exhibit, अयम् this, भर्तृषिण्डस्य for having received subsistence, निर्देष्टुम् to repay, कालः time, साधु this is, युध्यताम् fight well in war

"O heroic Mahodara! Today, exhibit your valour by destroying the enemy army. Having received my subsistence, this is the time to repay. Fight well in war."
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वाराक्षसेन्द्रोमहोदरः ।

प्रविवेशारिसेनांतांपतङ्गइवपावकम् ।।6.98.6।।


एवम् in that way, उक्तः having spoken, राक्षसेन्द्रः Rakshasa king, महोदरः Mahodara, तथाbe it so इति thus, उक्त्वा spoken, पतङ्गःmoth, पावकम् इव enters the fire, ताम् अरिसेनाम् that army of enemy, प्रविवेश entered

Having spoken like that by the king of Rakshasas, Mahodara entered the army of the enemy like a moth enters fire.
ततस्सकदनंचक्रेवानराणांमहाबलः ।

भर्तृवाक्येनतेजस्वीस्वेनवीर्येणचोदितः ।।6.98.7।।


ततः thereafter, महाबलः mighty, तेजस्वी brilliant, सःhe, भर्तृवाक्येन by the word of king, स्वेन himself in obedience, वीर्येण valiance, चोदितः inspired, वानराणाम् with Vanaras, कदनम् war, चक्रे went

Thereafter, the mighty and brilliant Mahodara, in obedience to the word of the king, inspired by his own valour, went to fight with Vanaras.
वानराश्चमहासत्त्वाःप्रगृह्वःविपुलाशशिलाः ।

प्रविश्यारिबलंभीमंजघ्नुस्तेरजनीचरान् ।।6.98.8।।


महासत्त्वाः mighty, ते they, वानराश्च Vanaras also, विपुलाः huge, शिलाः rocks, परिगृह्य seizing hold, भीमम् frightening, अरिबलम् enemy army, प्रविश्य entered, रजनीचरान् night ranger, जघ्नुः went

The mighty Vanaras also seizing huge rocks entered into the frightening enemy army of the Rakshasas.
महोदरस्तुसङ्कृद्धश्शरैःकाञ्चनभूषणैः ।

चिच्छेदपाणिपादोरुन्वानराणांमहाहवे ।।6.98.9।।


महाहवे great war, सुसङ्कृद्धः highly enraged, महोदरः Mahodara, काञ्चनभूषणैःdecked with gold शरैः arrows, वानराणाम् Vanaras, पाणिपादोरु hands legs and thighs, चिच्छेद shattered

In that great war, enraged Mahodara with arrows decked in gold shattered the Vanaras by attacking on hands, legs, and thighs.
ततस्तेवानरास्सर्वेराक्षसैरर्दिताभृशम् ।

दिशोदशद्रुताःकेचित्केचित्सुग्रीवमाश्रिताः ।।6.98.10।।


ततः thereafter, सर्वे all, तेवानराः those Vanaras, राक्षसैः Rakshasas, भृशम् pain, अर्दिताःunable to bear, केचित् some, दश ten, दिशः directions, द्रुताःfled, केचित् some, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, आश्रिताःfor refuge,

Thereafter, unable to bear the pain, those Vanaras hit by Rakshasas, went in ten directions and some went to Sugriva for refuge.
प्रभग्नांसमरेदृष्टवावानराणांमहाचमूम् ।

अभिदुद्रावसुग्रीवोमहोदरमनन्तरम् ।।6.98.11।।


समरे in conflict, प्रभग्नम् defeated, वानराणाम् Vanaras, महाचमूम् great army, दृष्टवा seeing, सुग्रीवःSugriva, अनन्तरम् thereafter, महोदरम् Mahodara, अभिदुद्राव rushed towards

Seeing the great army of Vanaras defeated in the conflict, Sugriva rushed towards Mahodara.
प्रगृह्यविपुलांघोरांमहीधरसमांशिलाम् ।

चिक्षेप स महातेजास्तद्वधायहरीश्वरः ।।6.98.12।।


महातेजाः endowed with high energy, हरीश्वरः monkey Lord, महीधरसमाम् closely resembling mountain, घोराम् dreadful, विपुलाम् huge, शिलाम् rock, प्रगृह्य seizing, तद्वधाय to kill, चिक्षेप hurled

Endowed with great energy, Sugriva, the monkey Lord, seizing a huge mountain like dreadful rock, hurled to kill Mahodara.
तामापततनींसहसाशिलांदृष्टवामहोदरः ।

असम्भ्रान्तस्ततोबाणैर्निर्बिभेददुरासदाम् ।।6.98.13।।


ततः then, महोदरःMahodara, सहसा immediately, आपतन्तीम् coming towards him, दुरासदाम् difficult to break, तांशिलाम् that rock, दृष्टवा seeing, असम्भ्रान्तः not bewildered, बाणैः arrows, निर्बिभेद struck and broke

Then seeing the formidable rock coming towards him, he was not bewildered and immediately struck and broke it with his arrows.
रक्षसातेनबाणौघैर्निकृत्तासासहस्रधा ।

निपपातशिलाभूमौगृध्रचक्रमिवाकुलम् ।।6.98.14।।


शइला that rock, तेनरक्षसा by that Rakshasa, सहस्रधा thousands of pieces, निकृत्ता broken, सा that, आकुलम् shattered, गृध्रचक्रमिव like a flock of vultures, भूमौ on the ground, निपपात fell

That rock, struck by Mahodara fell on the ground shattered and broken into a thousand pieces.
तांतुभिन्नांशिलांदृष्टवासुग्रीवःक्रोधमूर्छितः ।

सालमुत्पाट्यचिक्षेपराक्षसेरणमूर्थनि ।।6.98.15।।


सुग्रीवः Sugriva, भिन्नाम् fragmented, तांशिलाम् that rock, दृष्टवा seeing, क्रोधमूर्छितः deluded with anger, सालम् sala trees, उत्पाट्य tearing up, चिक्षेप shattered, सः that, नैकधा one, राक्षसे on the Rakshasa, रणमूर्दनि in the battlefield

Seeing the fragmented rock, Sugriva was deluded with anger, and tearing up a sala tree, he shattered on the Rakshasa (Mahodara) in the battlefield.
शरैश्चविददारैनंशूरःपरपुरञ्जयः ।

स ददर्शततःक्रुद्धःपरिघंपतितंभुवि ।।6.98.16।।


शूरः shafts, परपुरञ्जयःscourge of enemy forces, एनम् in that way, शरैःshafts, विददार lacerated, ततः them, सः that, क्रुद्धःangry, भुवि ground, पतितम् fallen, परिघम् tree, ददर्श beheld

Mahodara, a scourge of enemy forces, who lacerated Sugriva in that manner, angry, made the tree fall on the ground.
आविध्यतु स तंदीप्तंपरिघंतस्यदर्शयन् ।

परिघाग्रेणवेगेनजघानास्यहयोत्तमान् ।6.98.17।।


सः he, दीप्तम् glowing, तंपरिघम् that iron bar, आविध्य failing, तस्य his, दर्शयन् exhibiting, उग्रवेगेन with terrible speed, परिघाग्रेण top of bar, अस्य its, हयोत्तमान् best of horses, जघान struck

Sugriva, picking up that glowing iron bar, exhibiting its top, whirling it around, struck the best of horses of Mahodara.
तस्माद्धतहयावदीरःसोऽऽवप्लुत्यमहारथात् ।

गदांजग्राहसंक्रुद्धोराक्षसोऽऽथमहोदरः ।।6.98.18।।


अथ and then, वीरः hero, राक्षसः Rakshasa, सः that, महोदरःMahodara, हतहयात् destroyed horses, तस्मात् from there, महारथात् great chariot, अवप्लुत्य jumping down, क्रुद्धः angry, गदाम् mace, जग्राह took hold

Then the hero, Mahodara, his horses destroyed, jumped from the great chariot, and took hold of a mace.
गदापरिघहस्तौतौयुधिवीरौसमीयतुः ।

नर्दन्तौगोवृषप्रख्यौघनाविवसविद्युतौ ।।6.98.19।।


गदापरिघहस्तौ carrying a mace and an iron bar in their hands, वीरौ heroes, गोवृषप्रख्यौ like two bulls, तौ both, सविद्युतौ charged with lightning, घनाविव like clouds, नर्दन्तौ roaring, युधि in the battlefield, समीयतुः came together

Both the heroes, Mahodara and Sugriva like two bulls holding mace and iron bar respectively, like clouds charged with lightning came roaring in the battlefield.
ततःक्रुद्धोगदांतस्यैचिक्षेपरजनीचरः ।

ज्वलतनींभास्कराभासांसुग्रीवायमहोदरः ।।6.98.20।।


ततः then, तस्यै by their, क्रुद्धःanger, रजनीचरः night ranger, महोदरःMahodara, ज्वलन्तीम् glowing, भास्कराभासाम् like the sun, गदाम्mace, सुग्रीवाय at Sugriva, चिक्षेप flung

Then provoked by anger, the night ranger, Mahodara flung his mace at Sugriva which shone like the Sun.
गदांतांसुमहाघोरामापततनींमहाबलः ।

सुग्रीवोरोषताम्राक्षस्समुद्यम्यमहाहवे ।।6.98.21।।

आजघानगदांतस्यपरिघेणहरीश्वर ।

पपात स गदोद्भिन्नःपरिघस्तस्यभूतले ।।6.98.22।।


महाहवे terrible conflict, आपतन्तीम् falling, सुमहाघोराम् very dreadful, तांगदाम् that mace, महाबलः mighty, रोषताम्राक्षः eyes turned red in anger, हरीश्वरः Lord of monkeys, सुग्रीवःSugriva, समुद्यम्य struck, तस्य his, गदाम् mace, आजघान hit, गदोद्भिन्नः mace broken into pieces, तस्य his, परिघःiron bar, भूतले on the ground, पपात fell.

In that terrible conflict, seeing the mace broken and falling, mighty Sugriva, whose eyes turned red in anger, lifted up his iron bar, struck at the mace of the Rakshasa. The mace fell on the ground and broke into pieces.
ततोजग्राहतेजस्वीसुग्रीवोवसुधातलात् ।

आयसंमुसलंघोरंसर्वतोहेमभूषितम् ।।6.98.23।।


ततः then, तेजस्वी energetic, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, वसुधातलात् from the ground, सर्वतः all over, हेमभूषितम् encrusted with gold, घोरम् frightening, आयसम् on all sides, मुसलम् steel club, जग्राहpicked up

Then, energetic Sugriva picked from the ground a frightening steel club encrusted with gold on all sides.
स तमुद्यम्यचिक्षेपसोऽऽप्यन्यांव्याक्षिपद्गदाम् ।

भिन्नावन्योन्यमासाद्यपेततुद्दरणीतले ।।6.98.24।।


सः he, तम् that, उद्यम्य taking up, चिक्षेप shattered, सोऽऽपि on Mahodara, अन्याम् other, गदाम् mace, व्याक्षिपत्colliding with each other, तौ both, अन्योन्यम् one another, आसाद्य taking up, भिन्नौ broken, धरणीतले on the surface of the earth, पेततुः fell,

Sugriva took up the steel club and hurled at Mahodara who took another mace and hit back. Both collided with each other and shattered they fell down on the surface of the earth.
ततोग्नप्रहरणौमुष्टिभ्यांतौसमीयतुः ।

तेजोबलसमाविष्टौदीप्ताविवहुताशनौ ।।6.98.25।।


ततः thereafter, तेजोबलसमाविष्टौ fully endowed with strength, तौ both, भिन्नप्रहरणौ weapons broken, दीप्तौ glowing, हुताशनौइव like fire, मुष्टिभ्याम् with their fists, समीयतुः fought

Thereafter, both of them fully endowed with strength, with their weapons broken, who resembled glowing fires, fought with their fists.
जघ्नतुस्तौतदान्योन्यंवेदतुश्चपुनःपुनः ।

तलैश्चान्योन्यमहत्यपेततुश्चमहीतले ।।6.98.26।।


तदा then, तौ both, पुनःपुनःagain and again, नदन्तौ roaring, अन्योन्यम् one another, जघ्नतुःstriking, अन्योन्यम् one another, तलैः palms, आहत्य slapped, महीतले on the ground, पेततुः च fallen, rolled

Then both of them again and again striking each other slapping with palms fell down and rolled on the ground.
उत्पेततुस्ततस्तूर्णंजघ्नतुश्चपरस्परम् ।

भुजैश्चिक्षिपतुर्वीरावन्योन्यमपराजितौ ।।6.98.27।।


तदा then, तूर्णम् quickly, उत्पेततुः getting up, परस्परम् one another, जघ्नतुः च striking, वीरौ heroes, अपराजितौ never been defeated, अन्योन्यम् one another, भुजैःarms, चिक्षिपतुः pushed

Then quickly getting up striking one another, both the heroes who have never been defeated, pushed each other by their arms.
जग्मतुस्तौश्रमंवीरौबाहुयुधेपरंतपौ ।

अजहारतदाखडगमदूरपरिवर्तिनम् ।।6.98.28।।

राक्षसश्चर्मणासार्धंमहावेगोमहोदरः ।


परंतपौ scourge of their enemies, तौ both, वीरौ heroes, बाहुयुद्धे wrestling, श्रमम् exhausted, जग्मतुः in fighting, तदा then, महावेगः at great speed, राक्षसः Rakshasa, महोदरः Mahodara, अदूरपरिवर्तिनम् not far from there, खडगम् sword, चर्मणासार्धम् along with shield, जहार picked up

Both being scourge of their enemies, both heroes wrestling were exhausted with fighting. Then the Rakshasa picked up a sword lying not far from there along with a shield.
थैव च महाखडगंचर्मणापतितंसह ।।6.98.29।।

जग्राहवानरश्रेष्ठस्सुग्रीवोवेगवत्तरः।।

तथैव likewise, वेगवत्तरः endowed with speed, वानरश्रेष्ठः champion of Vanaras, सुग्रीवःSugriva, पतितम् fallen down, महाखडगम् huge sword, चर्मणासह along with shield, जग्राह took up.

Likewise, Sugriva endowed with speed, a champion of Vanaras, took up a huge sword fallen down with a shield.
तौतुरोषपरीताङ्गौनर्दन्तावभ्यधावताम् ।।6.98.30।।

उद्यतासीरणेहृष्टावुभौशस्त्रविशारदौ ।


ततः then, रोषपरीताङ्गौ whose limbs were ceased overcome by anger, उद्यतासीsprang forward, शस्त्रविशारदौ knowledgeable in the use of weapons, रणे in battle, हृदि at heart, अष्टावुभौ both with joy, नर्दन्ते roaring, अभ्यधावताम् to destroy one another

Then the two, whose limbs ceased, who were knowledgeable in the use of weapons, furious, sprang forward in the battle, both with joy, roaring to destroy one another.
दक्षिणंमण्डलंचोभौसुतूर्णंसम्परीयतुः ।।6.98.31।।

अन्योन्यमभिसङ्कृद्धौ जये प्रणिहितावुभौ ।


अन्योन्यम् one another, अभिसङ्कृद्धौ enraged at the other, जये victory, प्रणिहितौ stretching forth, उभौ both, सुतूर्णम् at great speed, प्रदक्षिणम् left to right, मण्डलम् in circles, सम्परीयतुः encountered

Enraged at one another, intent to win, both stretched forth at great speed, going from left to right in circles and encountered each other.
तुशूरोमहावेगोवीर्यश्लाघीमहोदरः ।।6.98.32।।

महाचर्मणितंखडगंपातयामासदुर्मतिः ।


शूरःwarrior, वीर्यश्लाघी proud of valour, दुर्मतिःevil minded, सःमहोदरः that Mahodara, महावेगः endowed with great speed, तम् them, खडगम् swords, महाचर्मणि on the huge shield, पातयामास hurled

Mahodara, a warrior, evil minded one, endowed with great speed, hurled the sword on the shield of Sugriva.
लग्नमुत्कर्षतःखडगंखडगेनकपिकुञ्जरः ।।6.98.33।।

जहारसशिरस्त्राणंकुण्डलोपहितंशिरः ।


कपिकुञ्जरः elephant of the monkeys, लग्नम् struck to, खडगम् sword, उत्कर्षतःextracting, सशिरस्त्राणम् head with helmet, कुण्डलोपगतम् decked with earrings, शिरःhead, खडगेन sword, जहारsevered

While Mahodara was extracting the sword stuck to the head, Sugriva, the elephant of the monkeys, severed the head of Mahodara which was decked with earrings and helmet.
निकृत्तशिरसस्तस्यपतितस्यमहीतले ।।6.98.34।।

तद्बलंराक्षसेन्द्रस्यदृष्टवातत्र न तिष्टते ।


निकृत्तशिरसः head severed and fallen, तस्य his, महीतले on the ground, पतितस्य fallen, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य Rakshasa king's, बलम् army, तत् there, दृष्टवा seeing, तत्र there, स तिष्टते those seated there ran

Mahodara's head severed and fell on the ground. Seeing that Rakshasa king's army ran from there.
हत्वांतंवानरैस्सार्धंननादमुदितोहरिः ।।6.98.35।।

चुक्रोध च दशग्रीवोबभौहृष्टश्चराघवः ।


हरिः Sugriva the monkey, तम् their, हत्वा killed, वानरैः Vanaras, सार्धम् all, मुदितः happy, ननाद shouted, दशग्रीवःten headed, चुक्रोध च angry, राघवश्च Raghava also, हृष्टः glad, बभौ became

Sugriva, the monkey leader having killed Mahodara, the Vanaras shouted in joy. The ten headed Ravana became enraged. Raghava was glad.
विषण्णवदनास्सर्वेराक्षसादीनचेतसः ।।6.98.36।।

विद्रवन्तिततस्सर्वेभयवित्रस्तचेतसः ।


सर्वे all, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, विषण्णवदनाः sad face, दीनचेतसः dull and piteous, सर्वे all, भयवित्रस्तचेतसः out of fear, ततः there, विद्रवन्ति ran

All the Rakshasas became dull and piteous with sad faces. Out of fear they ran.
महोदरंतंन्वििपात्यभूमौमहागिरेःकीर्णमिवैकदेशम् ।

सूर्यात्मजस्तत्ररराजलक्ष्म्यसूर्यस्स्वतेजोभिरिवाप्रधृष्यः ।।6.98.37।।


सूर्यात्मजः son of sun god, महागिरेः great mountain, कीर्णम् thrown, एकदेशम् इव one part, तंमहोदरम् Mahodara, भूमौ on the ground, न्वििपात्य broken, अप्रधृष्यःunassailable, सूर्यः Sun, स्वतेजोभिरिव by his radiance, तत्र there, लक्ष्म Lakshmi, रराज shone

Just as a part of a huge mountain thrown down, an unassailable Mahodara, fallen on the ground, shone there like Lakshmi, just as the Sun shines by his own radiance.
अथविजयमवाप्यवानरेन्द्रस्समरमुखेसुरसिद्धयक्षसङ्घै ।

अन्वितलगतैश्चभूतसङ्घैर्हर्षरुषसमाकुलितैस्तुतोमहात्मा ।।6.98.38।।


अथ and then, वानरेन्द्रःVanara king, समरमुखे in the forefront of battle, विजयम् victory, अवाप्य attained, सुरसिद्धयक्षसङ्घै Suras, Siddhas, Yakshas, हरुषसमाकुलितैः very delighted, अन्वितलगैःon the land, भूतसङ्घै च all beings, माहात्मानाः great selves

Thereafter, Suras, Siddhas, Yakshas of heaven and all beings on the land, great selves who were gazing at the battle felt highly delighted seeing the victory of the Vanara king in the forefront of the battlefield.
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाडेअष्टानवतितमःसर्गः ।।
This is the end of the ninety eighth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
